‘I Don’t Do White Walls,’ Says the Owner of This Colorful French Apartment
Just wait until you see the vegetable-print backsplash.
The two-bedroom apartment he shares with his wife, Sabrina Medaghri Alaoui, in the 11th arrondissement, serves as a testament to his family firm’s 183-year history, with carefully placed pieces ranging from the reeditioned 1973 sofa to the contemporary cocktail table and a 1990s mirror. The unit, in a 19th-century Haussmannian building, needed an extensive renovation before Goux moved in, and it now serves as the perfect canvas to tell the story of the couple’s shared past.
Sentimental objects and design flourishes—such as the custom-tile backsplash in the kitchen and a dramatic painted ceiling in the office—make for a meaningful medley. “We have our own way of living,” Goux says, “which is to always be celebrating with our friends and family.”

A Collector’s 592-Square-Foot Attic Apartment Sits Steps from Paris’s Place des Vosges

“I’ve been looking for a place like this for a long time, and then I came across this rare little gem that’s anything but conventional. It is very Parisian—a top floor attic apartment with generous ceilings and many skylights. That was essential for me because I knew I would have my studio there,” collector, decorator, and set designer Marie-Anne Derville says. “This place helps enormously when it comes to my work. It inspires me because I have the feeling of being outside, surrounded by light and sky.”
Once Marie-Anne had found this 592-square-foot apartment, she had to completely redesign it with the help of interiors architect Régis Larroque , restructuring it to create simple volumes despite the quirks of this imperfect space. Today, it remains “convoluted, and the walls are askew,” she says with amusement, but the lines are cleaner and the layout has been optimized with the creation of a combined living room, open kitchen, and studio, and a half-antechamber, half-dressing room—a passageway “that serves little purpose” other than to create a slightly luxurious breathing space between the apartment’s workspace and the bedroom.
Around a 1963 table Carlo De Carli, Chiavari chairs from 1830 (all Galerie Le Studio).
The apartment is finished in a warm milky white though the bedroom and dressing room have a more mauve tone, with the carpet in the same reassuring, comfortable hues, creating a neutral backdrop for the furniture designs that are at the heart of Marie-Anne’s work as a set designer and collector. The slightly pink shade of the walls, thanks to paint studio Mériguet-Carrère , changes with the light, and its velvety texture creates a calm aesthetic that also contrasts with the patinated metal fireplace by Ateliers Bataillard and the very narrow dressing room doors that provide a sensation of height to the anteroom. As for the kitchen, it is finished with stone from Italy. “There’s a little ivory-tower feeling to this top-floor apartment, on a small scale,” she says. “It’s very cozy, like a little palace or a princess’s home atop a tower, reminiscent of the castles in childhood games that also permeate my work. It’s a place where I have the feeling that I can play.”
On the bronze mantelpiece by Marie-Anne, a photograph by Dominique Nabokov of Yvon Lambert’s living room (which appeared in the book Paris Living Rooms , Assouline, 2002). In front, a coffee table by Jean-Michel Frank . On the left, a faux marble pedestal.
Here, Art Deco furniture sits next to pieces from the 1980s, and Swedish Grace furniture is paired with pieces from the Louis XIV period. Marie-Anne also brings together works by her favorite living artists, painter Hadrien Jacquelet, photographers Dominique Nabokov and Bob Colacello, and multimedia artist Laure Prouvost (who is also her cousin). She surrounds herself with those who inspire her in the form of posters by Cy Twombly, Walter De Maria, and drawings by Bernard Boutet de Monvel. A mountain of books she has collected looms over her office. And the special relationship she developed with the Dina Vierny Gallery during the “Chez Dina Vierny” exhibition, which she staged and curated last October, gives her access to major works by Matisse and Serge Poliakoff, and she occasionally incorporates borrowed pieces into her decor.
Marie-Anne explains that she loves this charming little apartment, which is a little rickety and full of skylights (one of which looks out directly at the angel atop the July Column in the nearby Place de la Bastille). “It’s the first home I have created in my own image, so it’s important to me,” she says. “It’s also a place of passage and transition. I can’t wait to create another home, bigger of course, that will then be the start of something new. Because there always are new chapters, that’s the nature of the business.”

The Eiffel Tower district, home to the most visited monuments in Paris
Constructed in 1889 by Gustave Eiffel for the World's Fair, the Iron Lady is more than just a monument, it is a symbol. It houses a weather station and a TV and radio broadcasting site and offers unbeatable views of Paris. If you are really lucky, you can have lunch in the Jules Verne restaurant perched 410 feet above the ground. Otherwise, you can eat on the lawns of the Jardin du Trocadéro. The park stands on a 23-acre site, next to the Palais de Chaillot, also dating back to 1937. After crossing over the Pont d'Iéna, the visit continues through the Champs de Mars, a huge public garden.
The Eiffel Tower district and its many museums
Erected in 1748, the École Militaire, with its very rich architecture, is still home to the Army elite. It is open to visitors, and you can discover a facade dating from the time of Louis XIV, the Château, the Cour d'Honneur, and the Chapelle Saint Louis. A few yards further, you will reach Les Invalides and its esplanade, where you can stand and admire the Pont Alexandre III and the Grand Palais. Particularly well worth a visit is the Musée du Quai Branly and its collections of works of art from Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Also worth a look is the Palais de Tokyo, dedicated to contemporary art.
Transportation fit for a famous area.
Served by several metro stations, the RER, Vélib' bicycle rental stations, Paris taxis, and buses, this district has to be extremely easy to get to, given the number of visitors it receives. Nearby, the many stores on Rue Cler are the place to do your shopping. You really must visit the Eiffel Tower district during your stay in Paris. Take a look at our selection of rentals in the area.
An Iconic Location
The Eiffel Tower, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Paris and around the world, is centrally located in the west side of the city's 7th arrondissement. The area is also home to two of the capital's best museums, the Musée D’Orsay and Quai Branly, along with Le Bon Marché, the oldest shopping center in the city. A picturesque part of Paris that's also one of the city's most desirable residential neighborhoods, the 7th is chock-full of charm and attraction. Enjoy a stroll through the area's sprawling, tree-lined avenues or along the Seine's pedestrianized quays, and pack a picnic for the stunning Champs de Mars gardens near the Eiffel Tower. You'll also be in the political heart of Paris, home to the French Parliament, the headquarters of UNESCO and many other ministries and embassies.
The Heart and Soul of Paris
Come experience the 7th arrondissement and the countless museums, cultural touchstones and monuments the district has to offer. Wonderfully walkable, the area is known for its local tours, cafés, gardens, art galleries and museums. But of course, the 7th's crowning glory is the Eiffel Tower, that awe-inspiring symbol of French culture beloved the world over. Though criticized as an eyesore on its initial opening, the tower is now one of the most popular and instantly recognizable monuments on Earth. What's more, the Notre Dame is only a mile and a half away along the Seine. Experience the perfect beauty of the Eiffel Tower and enjoy a view of the many iconic tourist spots surrounding it from the privacy of your new home. How guest reviews work.
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score, we add up all the review scores and divide that total by the number of review scores we received. Guests can also give separate subscores in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free WiFi. Guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently – there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Quick stats about vacation rentals in Paris
Your guide to paris, all about paris.
The thumping heart of France, Paris is one the world’s great cities, beloved as much for its historical boulevards and world-class museums as its iconic bakeries and boutiques. Join the locals in line for freshly baked baguettes at the ivy-covered boulangeries of Le Marais, then wind down with a chocolat chaud at one of the city’s famous corner cafes. Visitors are drawn to Paris’ literary heritage, where antique bookstores and poetry performances abound, while food lovers are well served by a mix of traditional brasseries, chef-driven restaurants, and innovative under-the-radar hotspots.
Running through the heart of Paris, the river Seine provides a scenic backdrop for quayside picnics and a sought-after spot to cool off during the summer Paris Plages event. The city is world-renowned for its shopping, from the homey kitchenware stores on Rue Montorgueil to the historic fashion houses of Rue Cambon. Shoppers should be on the lookout for bargains during the twice-yearly sales (les soldes) in January-February and June-July. And for a tranquil start to an action-packed day, join in with a tai chi session among the famous topiary hedges of the Jardin des Tuileries.
The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Paris
An ideal time to book a vacation rental in Paris is in spring, when the city’s gardens are in full bloom and the cafés are bustling. From June through August, temperatures spike and there are long days of sunshine, drawing locals out onto the banks of the Seine. Paris boasts a packed program of summer events, including Bastille Day, Fête de la Musique, and the exciting final stage of an iconic bicycle race.
Occasionally uncomfortably high temperatures and busier streets are countered with beaches built along the river as part of the popular Paris Plages event, live music performances, and open-air movies. Fall is also a popular time to visit, with crisp days and eye-popping foliage in the city’s green spaces. Winter can be cold and gray, but the moody weather adds an element of mystery to the city, which tends to be quieter from November to February. It rarely snows in Paris.
Top things to do in Paris
Musée d'orsay.
Paris has more than 100 museums, but arguably the most beautiful is the Musée d'Orsay, which is housed in a stunning old Beaux-Arts railway. The art on display is by renowned French artists — including famous works by the Impressionists as well as changing special exhibitions. Enjoy a stroll along the Left Bank of the Seine to take in the city views before or after visiting.
Jardin des Tuileries
Once the garden of the Tuileries Palace, the Jardin des Tuileries opened to the public after the French Revolution. Explore these manicured gardens after visiting the nearby Louvre and taking a stroll around Place de la Concorde, the largest square in Paris. Pick up a delicate crêpe from one of the carts and settle down on a bench to do some people-watching.
Palais Garnier
Take in a classic opera, avant-garde ballet, or one of the many other performances staged at this historic venue. Built in 1875 at the request of the emperor, Palais Garnier is viewed by many as one of the most opulent opera houses in the world, with a breathtaking grand staircase, swathes of ruby velvet, and glittering chandeliers aplenty.
