21 Drivable Vacations From NJ (2023 Updated Guide)

driveable vacation from nj

While our signature shores offer plenty of getaways in the form of beachfront Airbnbs , there are some incredibly scenic drivable vacations from NJ just across state lines. With the Garden State in your rearview, there are so many places to explore, many of which are only a short car ride away. Every hotspot on this list is within four hours (driving distance) from New Jersey, leaving no excuse to put off your long-awaited vacation any further.

The Lodge at Woodloch – The Poconos, PA

Rejuvenation and stress relief are the pillars that keep this tranquil estate hosting thousands of people year after year. Fresh therapy pools that overlook the densely covered Poconos forests help alleviate anxiety. Tense shoulders are said to be no match for this quaint lodge deep in the mountains.

Reclaim the idea of isolation and find serenity in the distant Poconos Mountains.

The River House at Odette’s – New Hope, PA

Eastern Pennsylvania, specifically the city of New Hope, has an incredibly storied past. The town has developed over the centuries from being a quaint stopover to a tourism hotspot. Luring in artists and artisans along the Delaware River for decades is The River House at Odette’s . Originally built in 1794 as New Hope’s first hotel, former screen star Odette Myrtil Logan bought the property in 1961 and reinvigorated it with a French makeover.

Interweaving her taste for fine dining and culture led to stellar renovations all along the property, including the addition of a vintage piano bar and aptly named Odette’s Restaurant. Flairs of old Hollywood glamour come through the ornately decorated halls and vibrant wall art. A calm refuge in a newly bustling area, guests should expect this getaway to be a scenic excursion.

The Scandanavian stylings fit perfectly with the ski and sled atmosphere of the area, making the hotel a great getaway in the wintertime.

Sagamore Pendry – Baltimore, MD

Boasting a flawless experience, beginning with complimentary welcome cocktails, guests should expect an extravagant journey throughout their stay at the Sagamore Pendry. A repurposed warehouse and historical pier that has undergone $60 million in upscale renovations, this hotel is an aesthetic marvel inside and out. The polished venue sits on the waterfront of the thriving Fell’s Point community, which makes enjoying sunset views on the water all but inevitable.

Sagamore Pendry Hotel-Fells Point-Baltimore Maryland 06469

Grandiose chandeliers, shining leather couches, and exclusive views of the harbor make this spacious property one of the best in Baltimore. The rich coziness of the dark wood walls creates a classic and sophisticated space to unwind. Additionally, the accent walls beautifully reflect the light coming off the water, lighting up rooms with a nautical ambiance. Because the property stabs right into the bustling harbor, guests can appreciate a panoramic view from the enormous pool situated on the pier’s edge.

If the building looks familiar to you, the exterior was used as the set of the fictional Maryland School for the Arts for the films “Step Up” and “Step Up 2: The Streets.”

Blantyre – Lenox, MA

This five-star resort deep in the Berkshire mountains offers rolling hills and a dense forest of trees for anyone looking to retreat into nature. Two massive castle-like buildings are distanced across the grounds and make up the magic of Blantyre. Each offers a unique experience for patrons: the opulent Manor House is covered in stained glass and classical portraits while the Carriage House offers a unique charm. Finally, the secluded Cottages serve as an ideal alternative to the castles and offer a more private vacation.

The spa on the property offers a slew of deep tissue massages and customizable treatments. Wellness is a major priority to Blantyre, which is why they offer daily therapeutic sessions of yoga and meditation. Michelin-star Chef Daniel Boulud helms the Café Boulud, serving tasty twists on French classics. It’s also said to be the perfect destination to experience the fall foliage around Massachusetts.

Inn at Perry Cabin – St. Michaels, MD

Ranging in style from colonial to contemporary, the New England aesthetic is loud and proud all across this property. Largely nautical in theme and activities, sailing is offered for group excursions and romantic getaways — you can even get certified. Similarly, the plethora of wellness programs the facility offers rejuvenates and relaxes guests to the fullest extent.

With features like tennis courts, golfing, and croquet, Inn’s country club vibe gives a sense of extravagance not often felt while vacationing. From their greenhouses to their golf course, Inn at Perry Cabins is a paradisal retreat from the monotony of daily living.

Lokal Hotel – Philadelphia, PA

In terms of driveable vacations from NJ, it doesn’t get any more “local” than Lokal Hotel . This company prides itself on being a unique lodging experience in that its renovated buildings aren’t your typical metropolitan towers. Smack dab in the middle of up-and-coming Philly neighborhoods like Fishtown and Old City, Lokal Hotel was born from historic buildings that were upgraded with modern apartment furnishings. Specifically, the beautifully renovated Fishtown location dubs itself an apartment hotel because it bears more resemblance to a homey loft than a visitor’s sojourn.

Lokal Hotel’s innovative policies mean that guests won’t encounter a front desk upon arrival. Nor will they find an on-site staff. Rather, through a series of smartphone apps and codes, the hotel is able to streamline communication with visitors. More futuristic and efficient than impersonal, the iPads each room comes with help connect guests with local eateries and hotspots.

If you’re looking to stay within NJ borders, Lokal also hosts two South Jersey locations.

Wheatleigh Hotel – Lenox, MA

A design wonder, this stunning mega-mansion is modeled after the founder’s ancestral Italian home. The estate has a collection of antiques and museum-quality art, curating each room to be especially unique. Concrete columns transport visitors back to ancient times. Finally, their famous outdoor heated pool is sure to keep guests satisfied for hours on end.

Further, Wheatleigh Hotel’s signature restaurant holds just eight tables, offering an intimate setting for a farm-to-table meal. Other places to note on the property are the extensive wine cellar and newly added ax-throwing recreational area. Prioritizing privacy is a staple of the hotel, making it the perfect escape for any New Jerseyan.

Twin Farms – Barnard, VT

Perhaps the furthest excursion on this list can be found in Vermont, but Twin Farms is very much worth the journey. Famed novelist Sinclair Lewis founded the estate as a hub for the great thinkers of the mid-20th century after his fiancé encouraged him to buy the land for its crisp air and sweeping lawns. Since then, the 300-acre property encompassing lovely cottages, ski hills, and lakes has grown in popularity and available amenities. The drive is long, but Twin Farms is perhaps one of the best weekend getaways from NJ.

Camouflaged in a sea of green trees are more than 20 distinct cottages with methodically designed interiors. Rustic barns, sprawling orchards, and bending hiking trails lure city folk to the location year after year. Dine on farm-to-table cuisine that changes seasonally, like fresh squash grown in the fall.

Mayflower Inn and Spa – Washington, CT

A boutique option for the weary journeyer, the Mayflower Inn and Spa offers that wholesome New England elegance with a unique style similar to that of director Wes Anderson . Eclectic wallpapers seemingly plucked from storybooks transform the interior of the inn into a distinct and colorful world. Handcrafted vases, hanging plants, and columns of classic books only add to the whimsical aesthetic the inn has to offer.

Join acclaimed potter Charlie Dumais, co-founder of Dumais Made, in personalized ceramic sessions that are dually educational and fun. Explore the charming gardens spread throughout the estate. Brimming with an ever-changing rotation of seasonal vegetables, the on-site chefs at the Mayflower Inn and Spa work their wonders to create new menus monthly with locally sourced ingredients.

Shou Sugi Ban House – Water Mill, NY

Shou Sugi Ban House in The Hamptons embodies holistic and wellness practices from Japan. Owned and operated by an all-female team, the house pledges to be a safe place for self-care and recovery. Taking a step away from the pressures of everyday life, helping guests to slow down and find their inner peace is the goal of Shou Sugi Ban House. Its intentional balance of private and public spaces, along with its minimalist design, adds to the culturally rich venue that ends up feeling like an appendage of Japan.

A wellness menu containing shamanic healing, crystal realignment sessions, vibroacoustic therapy, and 20 other immersive classes are available. Be as active and engaged as you’re comfortable with, but don’t take off without trying something new.

Gurney’s Resort – Montauk, NY

Residents of New Jersey may already be well acquainted with the beach, but Montauk’s premier resort reinvigorates a person’s passion for the ocean. A beachfront property that bleeds into a beautiful seashore, the resort’s 2,000-foot private beach makes it unbeatable.

Their exclusive Beach Club offers several memorable perks. Drift off to sleep amidst the sound of crashing ocean waves in a rentable bungalow. Guests can request flowing bubbly and a king-size daybed just a few feet from the water’s edge. Additionally, you can also step away from this slice of paradise and drive through Montauk’s giant mansions.

 Ocean House – Westerly, RI

Ocean House offers up New England’s one-of-a-kind luxury in spades. Another oceanfront property, access to the beach is just a few hundred feet from the massive estate. The 150,000-square-foot building (built right after the Civil War) was torn down in 2003. A sturdier replica of the original building, built with more modern furnishings, became the Ocean House we know today.

Rated one of the top 10 resorts in the American Northeast by Travel + Leisure, Ocean House continues to expand its prowess on the shores of Rhode Island. With a variety of fun activities, like a wine tasting seminar taught by a certified sommelier and daily yacht rentals, guests can create an unforgettable experience all across the resort. Ocean House just recently announced the opening of a charming outdoor restaurant on the property’s North Lawn. They’ve set up intimate greenhouses for small groups to dine in, surrounded by a garden of lemon and lime trees. Guests can expect to enjoy the delicious selection of tea and whiskey the property prides itself in serving.

Castle Hill Inn – Newport, RI

Newport, Rhode Island is a seaside city that offers plenty of history, culture, and megamansions to gawk over. It was even the chosen place of recluse for past presidents, the “Summer White House,” for Eisenhower and Kennedy.

Castle Hill Inn is among the many Gilded Age-born mansions the state prizes. Its storied past has hosted Hollywood royalty like Grace Kelly and famous novelist Thornton Wilder. The inn pays homage to both by naming a cove and guest suite after them, respectively. Towering over the beautiful Narragansett Bay, a popular marina that hosts many of the community’s coveted yacht races is Castle Hill Lighthouse. Standing at 34 feet tall, the tourable structure has been guiding visitors to Newport since 1890.

Mohonk Mountain House – New Paltz, NY

What looks like a fairytale in the real world, Mohonk Mountain House is a castle that gives Sleeping Beauty’s a run for its money. Looming over the noiseless and spacious Hudson Valley, this hidden gem in New Paltz is a sight to behold. Glowing bonfires and starry skies light up nights, as the large forest is a refreshing respite from the populated suburbs.

Mohonk Mountain House is a place overflowing with enticing entertainment, including an illusionist that performs nightly and plenty of live music. Ice skating in the wintertime makes for snowy fun in their open-air pavilion. Lake Mohonk is prime for fishing, jet ski rentals, sailing, or lounging around. Finally, meals from the resort’s farm-to-table kitchen are bound to make you want another bite even after you’re full.

Glenmere Mansion – Chester, NY

A luxurious estate with quaint courtyards and sunkissed walls, it isn’t hard to see why Glenmere Mansion made this list of drivable vacations from NJ. Voted the “Most Romantic Hideaway in the World in 2011” by Travel + Leisure, this is the ideal couple’s retreat. Duos can expect a vast selection of spa treatments, some of which utilize techniques from traditions around the world. It even has a private helipad for those who wish to travel by air, a testament to the typical crowd Glenmere Mansion caters to.

The property’s architecture and exquisite styling, reminiscent of a Tuscan villa, are truly breathtaking. An idyllic getaway for a couple, guests have several winning suites to choose from. The lavish estate is complemented by its extensive gardens, originally designed by the nation’s first female landscape architect, Beatrix Farrand.

Whiteface Lodge – Lake Placid, NY

Lake Placid,  a two-time former host of the Winter Olympic Games, is a bustling area that thrives in the snow season. The most classic cabin trip on this list, Whiteface Lodge is centered on a mountainous area near the edge of Adirondack Park. A great spot for wintertime skiing, sledding, snowboarding, and so much more, the hills of Lake Placid are yours to traverse at Whiteface Lodge.

Antler chandeliers and authentic wooden walls only add to the rustic charm offered by the selection of lodges. Timber cabins with fully renovated interiors and complete kitchens are available for entire families or just couples looking to take a trip. Children are sure to find plenty to do too, as the resort comes with a movie theater and bowling alley.

Mirbeau Inn & Spa – Skaneateles, NY

This Skaneateles hideaway is the refreshing spa trip your sore muscles have been aching for. Interestingly, the French architecture and aesthetics were inspired by the work of artist Claude Monet. The estate’s warm tones, stunning ponds, and gardens were meant to mirror Monet’s own home in Giverny, just outside of Paris.

Bliss and tranquility thrive at this chateau, with well-separated cottages available for those looking for a more secluded vacation. At the heart of this 14,000-square-foot facility is the famous Mirbeau Spa. 18 treatment rooms, heated floors, saunas galore, and even a nail care center will keep guests preoccupied all visit long. The Finger Lakes region of Skaneateles is home to down-to-earth towns that are liberating to explore. Antique shops, mom-and-pop stores, and so many other small-town charms can be found just a short walking distance away from the property. You can find horseback riding, hot air balloon rides, and archery classes at or around Mirbeau Inn.

Hotel Hive – Washington, DC

Having gone to college in Washington D.C., I know firsthand how expensive tourism in the capital can be. While many Smithsonian museums are free, some of the best experiences across the capital tend to drain bank accounts. Fortunately, micro hotels like the Hotel Hive exist for affordability and convenience. While the rooms might be half the size of typical accommodations, they don’t feel like a tight squeeze. Bunk beds are even offered in some rooms, maximizing the use of space.

With a lively rooftop bar, Hotel Hive offers a great view overlooking the D.C. skyline. It’s connected to a trendy D.C. pizza shop called &pizza. Nothing is better after a night out than a freshly baked garlic pizza covered in tater tots.

Final Tips on Visiting Places In and Near New Jersey

  • Let the attendant fuel up if you’re traveling in New Jersey and need to gas up. It’s actually illegal to pump your own gas in The Garden State.
  • As of December 11, 2022, New Jersey is moving to cashless tolls. The New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway are two of the busiest toll roads in the United States, so expect to pay if you’re traveling those routes.
  • Although many of the attractions listed in our chosen locations are free to the public, we suggest budgeting for museum and park entry fees and any other specific events you’d like to attend while visiting your destination.
  • The beaches at popular tourist destinations in New Jersey and surrounding states can often get crowded during the summer. Plan on arriving early if you’re headed to a beach with a boardwalk.
  • Pack the proper footwear for the weather. Bring a warm and sturdy pair of snow boots if you’re traveling during winter. Comfortable sneakers are also a must during summer, especially if you plan on hiking or walking most of the day.
  • Never forget a road trip essential again with our downloadable family road trip checklist.

Gettysburg is a historic town in Pennsylvania known for a pivotal Civil War battle in 1863, where the Union victory halted Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s invasion of the North.

From New Jersey, Gettysburg is just a 2-3 hour drive away, making it an ideal destination for a day trip or a weekend getaway.

To make the most of your visit, consider going during the spring or fall months when the weather is generally pleasant, and the foliage is breathtaking.

One of the primary attractions in Gettysburg is the Gettysburg National Military Park, which preserves the battle site and includes various monuments, memorials, and exhibits.

Take a ranger-guided or self-guided auto tour to learn more about the significant events that occurred there.

Beyond the park, you’ll find other interesting sites, such as the Eisenhower National Historic Site (the former home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower), the Gettysburg Museum of History, and the Jennie Wade House.

  • 3. The Hamptons, New York

White house in The Hamptons, Long Island New York.

The Hamptons is a popular vacation destination for those in search of upscale beach vibes and a relaxed atmosphere.

Nestled on the eastern end of Long Island, it’s only about 200 miles from New Jersey, making it a quick getaway any time of year. That said, traffic can be heavy during peak season, so be prepared for some delays.

Consider visiting in the late spring, summer, or early fall to soak in the sun and take full advantage of the beautiful beaches.

The Hamptons are known for stunning beaches, with favorites like East Hampton, Amagansett, and Montauk. Each beach boasts its unique charm, whether it’s a laid-back, surfer vibe or a quiet, pristine paradise.

The Hamptons are also home to picturesque vineyards and wineries. Plan to sample local flavors and enjoy a leisurely afternoon among the beautiful rolling landscapes.

If beaches and wine aren’t your thing, spend an afternoon (or two) wandering through the luxury shops that dot the area, whether you’re just window shopping or looking to splurge.

  • 4. Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

Martha’s Vineyard is a picturesque island off the coast of Massachusetts, about 350 miles (560 km) from New Jersey.

It takes about 5.5 hours to reach one of the Vineyard ferry terminals, which depart from multiple locations along Cape Cod as well as from New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Kingston, Rhode Island.

The ferry only takes about 40 mins, but depending on traffic conditions or season, planning your route to Martha’s Vineyard may take just as much time as getting there.

Don’t worry, though – it’s worth it once you arrive.

Ideal times to visit Martha’s Vineyard are late spring, summer, and early fall. The summer months are the most popular, but if you prefer a quieter time of year, consider visiting in May or September.

The island is famous for its stunning beaches, seaside walks, and swimming spots along the Atlantic Ocean. However, be sure to explore the charming towns, historical monuments, cozy cafes, art galleries, and boutique shops that showcase the area’s particular character.

The Mystic Aquarium, home to thousands of marine animals, including beluga whales, sea lions, and penguins, is always worth a visit – just make sure you buy your tickets in advance as they tend to sell out quickly.

Once you’ve arrived in Rehoboth, take a walk along the bustling beach boardwalk filled with several shops, restaurants, and entertainment options, including the famous Funland amusement park.

The beach itself is an obvious highlight, with soft sand, beautiful blue waters, and plenty of space to relax in the sun.

Saratoga Springs is a charming city in Upstate New York known for horse racing and relaxing spas.

Just 250 miles (400 km) north of New Jersey, the drive to Saratoga Springs usually takes around 4 hours, but prepare for potential traffic as you pass New York City, especially during rush hour.

(Also, consider making a pitstop in Albany for a quick tour of New York’s state capital – a beautifully preserved historic town worth checking out.)

The best times to visit Saratoga Springs are during the summer when the thoroughbred racing season takes place, and the city is full of activities.

One of the main attractions in the city is the Saratoga Race Course, attracting thousands of visitors during its summer meet.

Another popular draw is the historic mineral springs throughout the city of Saratoga.

There are currently 21 public springs, each with differing mineral compositions, tastes, and supposed therapeutic properties. Many of the spas in the area offer rejuvenating treatments, pools, and skincare products that utilize the mineral-rich water.

Lastly, don’t forget to explore the vibrant downtown area, where you can stroll along Broadway and visit charming boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries.

Six Secret Getaways in New Jersey Login or Register to save this to your Favorites.

Plan a weekend getaway at these hidden gems..

Sure, New Jersey has some incredible vacation destinations, from  Atlantic City  to  Cape May —but what about off-the-beaten-path gems, those small towns with charming Main Streets, quiet parks and independent restaurants and theaters? Take a weekend trip to discover our lesser-known destinations with this roundup of “secret” getaways throughout the state.

Weekend Trip Idea #1 – Natural Beauty and Local Fare in Sussex County Escape to the breathtaking natural beauty of northern New Jersey, where rolling hillsides and sweeping views of the Kittatinny Mountains await. The stylish Fox and Bear Lodge in Glenwood makes the perfect home base. Be sure to check out one of the many restaurants and farm stands nearby—like Mohawk House (Sparta), Cow Patty’s (Wantage) and Pochuck Valley Farm Market (Glenwood). Looking to sip some local wines? Head to nearby Ventimiglia Vineyard (Wantage). Explore New Jersey’s great outdoors on the Appalachian Trail Boardwalk (just a half-mile from the lodge!), or venture to nearby High Point State Park (Sussex), the Stairway to Heaven Trail (Vernon Township) and Wawayanda State Park (Hewitt).

Weekend Trip Idea #2 – Outdoor Activities and Theatre in Newton Surrounded by 14 acres of serene woodlands,  The Wooden Duck Bed & Breakfast  offers a much-needed reprieve from daily stresses. Enjoy the quiet country life as you spot birds and herds of grazing deer or as you unwind by the on-site pool or gardens. During the day, enjoy a variety of outdoor activities—from horseback riding or mountain biking to fishing or hunting—at nearby  Kittatinny Valley State Park . At night, head into the town of Newton for a movie, live concert, or theatrical production at  The Newton Theatre .

Weekend Trip Idea #3 – Pick Your Passion in Somerset County Gardens and arboretums, eclectic dining and culinary activities, horseback riding, museums—find it all (and more!) in Somerset County . For a place to lay your head, stay at Bernards Inn (Bernardsville), a boutique hotel in the Somerset Hills. Dine on-site, or venture to a nearby restaurant like Osteria Morini , The Claremont Tavern , Bistro Seven Three , Tsuki Japanese Restaurant , The Station or Ninety Acres . Foodies can sharpen their culinary skills with a class at The Cooking School at Natirar or take a food tour of nearby Somerville with Beyond The Plate Food Tours . And there’s no shortage of other things to do in the area…

Check out one of the many gardens and arboretums, like Cross Estate Gardens (Bernardsville), Leonard J. Buck Garden (Far Hills) and Duke Farms (Hillsborough). Those looking for more active pursuits will feel right at home at Natirar , a 400-plus-acre property with paths for walking, jogging, biking and horseback riding (like the 1.3-mile Great Meadow Trail and 1-mile Upper Field Nature Trail). Museum lovers can head to the USGA Museum (Liberty Corner) and nearby Hunterdon County’s Northlandz (Flemington).

Weekend Trip Idea #4 – Bright Ideas in Ocean County Toms River may elicit thoughts of summer and the Shore, but it’s a fantastic year-round destination. Stay at Mathis House , a charming B&B in the heart of downtown —and host to a renowned Victorian tea service. Learn something new at the Township of Ocean Historical Museum , Toms River Seaport Society & Maritime Museum and Insectropolis (the “bugseum” of New Jersey). Or head to Ocean County College, where you can see the stars at Robert J. Novins Planetarium or take in a show at the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts . Or exercise your mind at one of two escape rooms in Toms River: East Coast Escape Room and Solve the Room .

Weekend Trip #5 – History and Wine in Mays Landing The historic waterfront town of Mays Landing dates back to the 1700s, and its prime river location allowed it to become a bustling port during the Revolutionary War. Enjoy the local history when you stay in  The Inn at Sugar Hill , an 1840s mansion with six antique-filled rooms and an on-site restaurant serving up traditional American cuisine. Just a few miles south, explore the beautiful wetlands and local wildlife by walking along the 1.8-mile Swamp Trail Boardwalk at  Estell Manor Park , which was once home to Native Americans, followed by an 1800s glassworks factory and then a munitions plant during World War I. Now it is home to 1,700 acres of natural landscapes and the  Warren E. Fox Nature Center . Also nearby, sip award-winning wine at  Balić Winery , which dates back to the early 1900s, when descendants of early settlers planted the vineyards.

Weekend Trip #6 – Arts, Culture and Cruising in Millville In Millville, stay at  Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott  for cozy accommodations and free breakfast, and get ready for a weekend of arts, culture and more. At The Museum of American Glass at  WheatonArts and Cultural Center , marvel at impressive works of glass displayed in eye-catching exhibits, or walk through the craft studios to watch artisans in action as they create colorful glass pieces. In the afternoon, spend a leisurely two hours with  Maurice River Cruises —and spot wildlife-filled meadows and waterways along the route. Once the sun goes down, catch a live concert, comedy or musical production at the  Levoy Theatre , where a packed schedule offers an array of entertainment.

Cape May Point Lighthouse

Located on the southern tip of New Jersey's Cape May, at the mouth of Delaware Bay , Cape May Point has long been an important place for both its strategic position and its beaches. It has been a popular resort destination since the 19th century, and still has a reputation for being a tranquil retreat with plenty of things to do. A convenient and popular way to get around here is via bicycle, and there are several hotels and shops that offer rentals.

The Cape May Historic District , a registered landmark, is home to over 600 beautifully preserved Victorian houses, several of which can be toured. The area covers about 30 blocks, and walking tours are available that highlight the most historically and architecturally significant homes along main routes like Washington Street. In addition to the museums and tea rooms that are scattered throughout the historic homes, the Washington Street Mall in the center of the Historic District has a variety of small shops and eateries.

Cape May Point State Park provides both natural and historic attractions. The most popular of these is the Cape May Lighthouse , a beacon that has been in use since it was built in 1859. Tourists can climb the 199 steps to get panoramic views, and there is a good visitor center as well. The park is also home to the World War II Lookout Tower , as well as a bunker from that era. Nature lovers will find numerous walking and hiking trails where you can spot a range of wildlife, especially migrating and shore birds.

Cape May Point has a long public beach that runs along its southern shore, and this is where you will find the larger hotels and resorts, as well as some good ocean-view restaurants. A smaller beach, located on the western shore, is Sunset Beach . As the name suggests, this is a popular place for couples to take an evening stroll to watch the sun go down over the water. All beaches in Cape May do have an entry fee during the summer season.

Atlantic City at night

Atlantic City has enough things to do to keep you busy for weeks, but it's also a great place for a fun-filled weekend getaway. It is known as the "Las Vegas of the East" because of its 'round-the-clock entertainment and lively atmosphere, but it has even more to offer thanks to the miles of sandy beaches and family-fun atmosphere of oceanside amusement parks.

The Boardwalk is a classic wooden promenade dating back to 1870, and today it spans 5.5 miles of coastline. Tourists short on time or who simply want to have the full Boardwalk experience can ride in the unique electric tram or in the people-powered rolling chairs, similar to a rickshaw. Most of Atlantic City's most popular attractions are positioned along the Boardwalk, and you will find no shortage of food vendors, beach supplies, and arcades.

Among the most iconic landmarks is The Steel Pier , a huge seaside amusement park that was first opened in 1898. Today, it is fully updated and includes a full range of rides, from kiddie trains to thrill rides like the Slingshot. Here, you can also find the most classic of all rides, The Wheel, a 227-foot Ferris wheel with gondola-style passenger cars. Weather permitting, this is in operation year-round, and each car is temperature controlled for comfort. All rides and games are ticketed, with no high-priced admission fee for those who just want to enjoy the carnival atmosphere.

For a classic Atlantic City experience, tourists can stay at Caesars Atlantic City , a four-star resort hotel located in the heart of the action, just a block from the Boardwalk. The resort offers a full range of amenities, including a pool, fitness center, full-service spa, game room, free shuttle service, beach access, and on-site dining and entertainment.

Another centrally located hotel that's a bit more budget-friendly is the Courtyard Marriott Atlantic City Beach Block , which is just two blocks from the Boardwalk and Steel Pier. The hotel offers several conveniences, including bicycle rentals, a free shuttle bus, self-serve laundry, and a 24-hour snack bar, as well as an on-site restaurant.

Parents will appreciate the numerous kids' activities available to keep the little ones active and give mom and dad some R&R. The top activity for kids ages 4-12 is Circus Ninja Warrior , an exciting program where they can learn a range of challenging circus-themed activities.

Long Branch Beach

One of the more upscale beach towns along the Jersey Shore, Long Branch is a great place for sunbathing, swimming, and shopping. Amenities include showers, changing rooms, restrooms, and a sheltered picnic area, and there is a playground for little ones.

The beach snack shack is fine for a small bite, but when you are ready for a great meal head over to Pier Village , home to several excellent restaurants. Here, you can also find live entertainment and special events, including regular music and theater performances in the summer and free film screenings. Pier Village is also home to several chic boutiques.

A good place to stay in Long Branch is the Bungalow Hotel . It sits just next to Pier Village and has a private beach, which is helpful on those extra-hot days when the main beach is crowded. This suburban city was once the home of baseball legend Yogi Berra, and today his life and career are immortalized at the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center , located on the Montcliar State University campus next to Yogi Berra Stadium . In addition to exhibits dedicated to his life as an athlete, visitors can learn about his service during World War II, his family, and much more. The center also hosts many events, as well as baseball camps for youngsters.

The Wellmont Theater , first opened in 1922, is a local landmark that was once frequented by Thomas Edison. Today it is a center for performing arts, as well as a host for the Montclair Film Festival , and also home to a restaurant. Another cultural attraction is the Montclair Art Museum (MAM) , home to a wide range of visual arts from North America. It is unique for its gallery devoted to George Inness, a painter who lived in Montclair in the late 19th century.

Those who enjoy gardens will want to visit the Van Vleck House & Gardens , an Italianate villa with beautifully curated landscaping, as well as the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens . The largest non-commercial iris garden in the world, it covers 6.5 acres with more than 3,000 varieties. Those looking for more nature will enjoy Edgemont Memorial Park , home to walking trails, a safe playground for youngsters, and a lovely pond that hosts ice-skating in the winter.

The MC, Autograph Collection Montclair is an excellent place to stay, centrally located within a five-minute walk of several local restaurants, as well as the Montclair Art Museum. This chic, modern hotel boasts a large rooftop dining area with stunning views of Manhattan and spacious well-appointed rooms.

Couples looking for an extra-special getaway will love The George , an elegant B&B housed in a sizable historic mansion. Rooms are spacious and well-appointed, featuring décor that blends contemporary and historic elements.

Amusement park rides in Wildwood, NJ

The resort city of Wildwood is located on a barrier island adjacent to Cape May and is a popular family destination. Five Mile Beach is its centerpiece, along which runs a classic wooden Boardwalk, home to numerous waterside amusements, including arcades and food vendors.

Despite the plentiful waves, Wildwood is home to several water parks in addition to its beachfront amusement parks. One of the most popular is Splash Zone , which has a lazy river and plenty of slides, as well as covered seating areas. This is just one of the water parks at Morey's Piers amusement park, which covers a six-block stretch and includes over 100 rides. Adjacent to this is a smaller but nostalgic old-fashioned amusement park, Mariner's Pier .

Another great spot is Surfside Pier and Ocean Oasis Water Park , which features a combination of traditional and splash-based rides for all ages. Right next to this is Wildwood Dog Park and Beach , the only place your four-footed friend can enjoy the ocean between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Other family-friendly activities include the Doo Wop Experience , home to a museum and some rides, as well as the Seaport Aquarium , a small but interesting exhibit of ocean life.

On-site, the Salt Spa offers an astounding array of services, from traditional massages to state-of-the-art beauty treatments. The resort also provides transportation and special packages to the nearby Stone Harbor Golf Club .

Stone Harbor is located on a barrier island, just off the coast of Cape May, and is home to the top-rated beach in New Jersey . Although the narrow town is dominated by the beach and hotels, it is also home to several points of interest.

To learn more about the area's history, visit the Stone Harbor Museum . Both the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary and Stone Harbor Point are excellent places to spot local and migratory birds, and The Wetlands Institute offers guided educational walks about the local ecology. Those traveling with children will want to go inland to the Cape May County Park & Zoo , a small but free zoo that is home to well over 500 animals.

Asbury Park is a bustling seaside town that was put on the map in the 1980s by the legendary music venue The Stone Pony . The town sits along the shore of Ocean Grove Beach , an expansive sandy stretch that attracts swimmers and sunbathers all summer long. The Asbury Park Boardwalk runs parallel, and this is where you will find the majority of the city's most popular tourist attractions.

Families with younger children will appreciate Splash Park , a centrally located spray park that features over-sized watering cans and garden hoses in a safe, enclosed area. Another great family attraction, perfect for a rainy day activity, is the Silverball Museum . Enjoy the nostalgia of playing on the classic and vintage pinball machines and video games in this unique museum. Here, you will also find other arcade favorites, including air hockey, Skee-Ball, and other games. Just next door is an 18-hole mini-golf course.

The Asbury Ocean Club Hotel is a centrally located accommodation located steps from the Boardwalk and the most popular attractions and restaurants. Amenities include a rooftop pool, fitness center with personal trainers, in-room breakfasts, and electric vehicle charging.

Bicycles on the boardwalk in Ocean City

Just a few miles away from the hustle and bustle of Atlantic City, Ocean City is a little calmer than its sibling, perfect for families and couples looking for a more intimate weekend getaway. That's not to say there aren't plenty of things to do in Ocean City ; it's a vibrant seaside community filled with attractions, history, and outdoor activities.

Top family attractions include multiple water parks and miniature golf options, arcades, and amusement parks including the Steel Pier Theme Park . There is also a 2.5-mile Boardwalk along the sandy beach, which is filled with shops, restaurants, and goodies. Several local vendors offer water sports equipment rentals, and there are boat tour operators for sightseeing, wildlife watching, and fishing.

Families with younger kids will love the Francis Scott Key Family Resort , which features a spray park and a nine-hole mini-golf course, an outdoor pirate-themed pool, as well as a heated indoor pool. The resort also features a movie theater, arcade, basketball and sand volleyball courts, and a shuttle service to the Boardwalk.

Getaway Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

When comparing destinations, plenty of factors must be considered.

Not only should you look for their best features but also their drawbacks.

For example, the Bungalow Hotel is chic, fabulous, and family-friendly.

However, its thin walls and ceilings allow a lot of noise from upstairs and next door.

The Madison Hotel is a warm and traditional lodging filled with vintage touches.

It’s located at the historic Convent Station, but that means train noises are to be expected.

Lastly, The Castle at Skylands Manor houses the famous New Jersey Botanical Garden.

It has plenty of beautiful sights to see outdoors, but its indoor plumbing needs work.

If you’re looking for an alternative, check out the Woolverton Inn.

It’s a gorgeous bed and breakfast surrounded by farmland and greenery.

How I Picked The Destinations

As a travel writer, my work has led me to visit these incredible destinations.

But for a more in-depth comparison, I gathered other tourists’ insights as well.

I scoured established review sites, researched articles, and conversed with previous travelers.

Our Property Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Room Variety: I use this to rate the room options offered by every property. What room types are available? Can it accommodate different budgets, group sizes, and preferences? I ask myself these questions when evaluating the property’s room variety.
  • Comfort and Cleanliness: This measures the overall cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Does it have comfortable beds? Are the rooms spotless and dust-free? These are important factors I consider when rating comfort and cleanliness.
  • Location: This is used to evaluate how convenient and accessible the property is. How close is it to the attractions? Are there good public transportation options near the location? Is it easily accessible for families? These questions are important when I rate the location of every accommodation.
  • Affordability: I use this to evaluate the property’s affordability. Are the room rates reasonable? Does the property have any additional fees? Does the property offer discounts or packages? I ask myself this in order to rate affordability.
  • Family-Friendliness: This evaluates the family-friendliness of each property. Does it offer babysitting services and children’s activities? Does it have connecting rooms for families? I use these questions to rate the family-friendliness of the property.

best weekend getaways in new jersey travel photo

These wonderful destinations are all worth a visit when you’re in New Jersey.

They bring something unique to the table, such as elegance, tradition, beauty, and comfort.

My family and I enjoyed the Madison Hotel’s warm and classic ambiance.

We had a comfortable stay and loved the restaurant’s famous, perfectly cooked steaks.

Next, we marveled at The Castle at Skylands Manor’s beautiful grounds.

We checked off a bucket list item by visiting the New Jersey Botanical Garden inside.

Lastly, the Woolverton Inn was a peaceful experience in and of itself.

My kids loved the breakfast variety, while we, as parents, appreciated the fresh air.

But what made the Bungalow Hotel our favorite accommodation was its modern rooms.

They’re spacious with contemporary touches and functional equipment.

My little ones also had a blast playing foosball in the lobby and cooling off at the pool.

Aside from charming cities, these are, for us, the best weekend getaways in New Jersey.

8 Surprising New Jersey Weekend Getaways

As a life-long “Jersey Girl,” I’ve spent years trying to explain that my state is more than the stereotypes you see on television – of mafia hits and alcoholic beach bashes and disturbed housewives flipping over tables.

From a travel perspective, New Jersey is a hidden gem of the eastern seaboard; we have 130 miles of golden beaches , a winter ski resort in our mountainous north, and history all around, from George Washington’s stomping grounds to the oldest resort in the country – not to mention the rolling farms and verdant forests that earned us the nickname “The Garden State.”

To discover all the hidden vacation secrets of New Jersey, choose one of these delightful weekend getaways and get ready to be amazed by the “real” Jersey.

Painted Ladies and golden sand at Exit Zero

Head all the way south until you hit the state’s final curve and all you’ll see is blue signaling that you’ve arrived at Exit Zero, Cape May (in fact, to keep going, you need to take the Cape May Ferry across the Delaware Bay). Cape May is the country’s oldest seaside resort, dating back to the early 1800s. However, it’s much more than just a beach destination, although the soft sand here is some of the most impressive on the coast.

The 19 th  century Victorian architecture lends the town – all of which is protected as a US National Historical Site – an air of genteel sophistication. You’ll want to make sure you tour the cobblestone and gaslit streets to see the peacock feather-toned homes called Painted Ladies, with their swirling gingerbread trim and wide rocking-chair strew porches.  Cape May MAC  (Museums + Arts + Culture) conducts both walking and trolley tours of the area.

Where to stay.

Immerse yourself in history at the 200-year-old  Congress Hall , the stylish yellow hued resort that’s an iconic landmark in Cape May. When the property opened, it hosted United States Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, and Benjamin Harrison who walked the same original halls you’ll traverse now to get to your much modernized rooms. There’s an outdoor swimming pool, chair side beach service, and tasty dining options, including the outdoor Blue Pig Restaurant. The resort hotel is also a destination in the non-summer months with roaring fireplaces and cozy nooks to curl up in, plus festive holiday celebrations and decorations.

Congress Hall

The hippest mile of beach on the east coast.

California has Venice Beach, and New York City has the Rockaways, but New Jersey’s hipster beach town, Asbury Park, out-cools them all with a boardwalk filled with alt-shops, indie dining spots, and colorful creative murals that line the vintage boardwalk.

It’s hard to beat the musical bona fides here: this is where Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band got their start a the legendary  Stone Pony , which is still going strong. You can also catch live acts (and a bite to eat) at  Asbury Lanes  or outdoors as part of the Summer Stage series. Grab a drink at the  Wonder Bar , another Asbury Park classic hangout, or play pinball on the vintage machines at the  Silverball Museum .

The Asbury  Hotel not only puts you  near  the action when you stay in one of the sleek, contemporary rooms, but makes you  part  of the action, since the many nightlife options here attract both locals and visitors. Check out the vibrant bars and hangout spots like the rooftop lounge, outdoor movie theater, and lively lobby bar Soundbooth, where live music and open mic nights are on the schedule almost every night. During the day, the rooftop offers a pool with views plus live fitness and yoga classes to get your day started right.

Country charm along the delaware river.

Nestled on the banks of the Delaware River, Lambertville is a historic town dotted with romantic inns and filled with antique and vintage shops. This is prime leaf-peeping country, so expect crowds if you visit in the autumn when the magenta, gold, and copper leaves are at their peak. However, nearby is the glorious  Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve , filled with flowers that bloom throughout the spring and summer.

Across the river is New Hope, Lambertville’s sister city in Pennsylvania, chock full of swanky art galleries and boutiques nestled next to shops geared toward mystics and motorcycle riders – basically something for everyone. Grab a bite with a river view at  The Deck Restaurant & Bar  located behind the famous  Bucks County Playhouse ,  on the patio at  The Landing Restaurant , or at celebrity chef Jose Garces’  Stella .

The  Woolverton Inn   is   a romantic bed and breakfast perfect for couples looking for a cozy spot to reconnect. The property is set on 10-acres of rolling grass and surrounded by nearly 300 acres of forest and farmlands, so quiet is virtually guaranteed. An ivy league experience without the college tuition.

Princeton is often synonymous with its historic ivy-draped university, but there’s more to the charming town than just the storied school – although the former stomping grounds of Albert Einstein are definitely worth a visit as well, especially the collections at the  Princeton University Art Museum .

You can spend full days strolling and dining, especially around leafy  Palmer Square  adjacent to the university. Follow the red brick sidewalks to the Bent Spoon for some of the best ice cream in the state or tuck into modern Mediterranean cuisine at Mediterra before picking up one-of-a-kind jewelry, kitchen wares, books, and clothing at the shops that line the lively square.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Princeton

Wrap up the day with a cozy stay just off of Palmer Square at the quaint  Nassau Inn .  T he only hotel property in downtown Princeton offers up Colonial charm in a shingled history-filled building that’s been hosting visitors for centuries. Regular rooms are modern and spacious; suites are named after famous guests, including Christopher Reeves and Albert Einstein. The latter even carved his name in a restaurant booth at the hotel’s Yankee Doodle Tap Room. You shouldn’t do the same, but do visit the gastropub to try its bacon Wagyu burger or barbecue pork ribs, plus a wide selection of microbrews.

History, theater, and dining on the green

A magnet for history buffs, Morristown is where George Washington established both his Revolutionary War headquarters and  Fort Nonsense , both of which can be visited today.

Even if you’re not a history lover, there’s plenty to do in bustling downtown Morristown. Around the central green are a number of destination dining options, including the award-winning  Jockey Hollow Bar and Kitchen . Live theater productions and star-powered concerts are held at the  MAYO theater .

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Morristown

Although it has a small-town feel, Morristown boasts a big-name hotel in the  Westin Governor Morris Inn . It  hosts  an array of amenities, including the Depasquale Spa for luxurious face and body treatments. An outdoor pool, fitness center, and a Westin’s kids program make this a perfect vacation choice for the whole family.

A four season mountain resort vernon.

New Jersey’s ski mountain resort town, Vernon, offers 1,000 vertical feet of winter slopes at  Mountain Creek  across four different peaks traversed by trails and gondolas – plus a snow tubing park, so even the littlest snow lovers can join in on the winter fun.

The slopes aren’t just popular in the winter, though. In sunnier seasons, the mountain transforms into green getaway with downhill mountain biking trails and a waterpark that utilizes the hills for particularly zippy waterslides. Speaking of zippy, there’s a treetop zipline as well.

Outside the mountain resort, there’s plenty of other greenery, including several golf courses and hiking trails that include large swaths of the famed Appalachian Trail.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Vernon

You can stay right on the slopes in a  1 bedroom condo at the Appalachian Lodge . The unit offers a king size bed as well as a fold out couch, plus a well-stocked kitchenette for cooking meals at home. The modern building is packed with amenities, including a heated outdoor pool and hot tub with views of all the mountain action.

Stunning city views from the west side of the hudson.

Here’s an insider tip that New Jerseyans love to share: The best views of New York City are actually from across the Hudson River in Jersey. In fact, from the arts and entertainment hub of Hoboken, you’ll have stellar views from the Statue of Liberty straight up to the lights of Times Square. Outdoor dining at upscale spots like  Blue Eyes  (named for Hoboken’s favorite son, Frank Sinatra) or super trendy  The Ainsworth  allow you to enjoy dinner with a view.

Hoboken in also a magnet for creative arts, with many musicians, artists, and actors calling the city home. You can catch performances year round at local clubs and galleries, or at outdoor venues like Pier A Park, or plan a visit for the twice annual Hoboken Arts and Music Festival held in the spring and fall.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Hoboken

Since Hoboken is only a single square mile in size, you’ll find more lodging options just to the south in Jersey City. You’ll have the same great views, plus biking and walking access to Liberty State Park where you can catch a crowd-free ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Stay at this  Historic Brownstone Apartment  in the Paula’s Hook neighborhood, right in the hub of public transportation that can whisk you to Hoboken in just a few minutes by light rail or into Manhattan in less than 15 minutes by ferry or PATH train. The stylish one bedroom apartment features period detailing, like exposed brick and an ornamental fireplace, plus a private balcony and modern kitchen.

Enjoy the natural wonders of the delaware water gap.

Another New Jersey surprise for nature lovers is the scenic beauty of the  Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area,  the body of water separating New Jersey and Pennsylvania (interestingly, despite its name, it’s nowhere near Delaware).

Base your explorations in Blairstown, a charming small town with a historic mill at its center. From here you can reach waterfalls, tubing, canoeing, fishing, and swimming locations.

Plan a hike in  Worthington State Forest . The trail leads uphill to a fantastic overlook of the “Gap,” the break in the Kittatinny Mountains that was carved by the Delaware River with great views surrounding area and Mount Minsi.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Blairstown

“Take in breathtaking scenery” at  this two bedroom, two bathroom apartment  located in Shawnee Village Resort, just across the river in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. The Reeves Brook Loop Trail is roughly four miles and typically takes around 2+ hours to complete.

long weekend trips from nj

Parking and public restrooms are available at the Reeves Meadow Visitor Center, which is where the hike begins. When doing this loop trail in the counterclockwise direction (starting on white trail markers), hikers must climb a moderately challenging and steep rock scramble to get to the main vista. Visitors who begin the hike clockwise can follow the red trail markers to the blue trail markers and enjoy stunning vistas from the top of the mountain. Hikers who follow this route can then turn around to get back to the parking lot the same way they came, avoiding the steep rock scramble. As a somewhat experienced hiker, I personally loved the rock scramble here and found it to be a fun trek, but please use your own discretion to decide which route is best suited for you! Read more about the other trails at Harriman State Park here.

Maine is chock full of things to do and places to explore. It makes sense that the farther North you travel, the more beautiful sweeping landscapes there are to discover.

Portland | 5-hour drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

portland maine

Portland is Maine’s biggest city by population and offers plenty of art, history, and food to experience. We recommend kicking off a Portland tour in Old Port, full of beautiful historic buildings and cobblestone streets, perfect for a stroll and a meal at one of its many restaurants. And speaking of restaurants, you simply cannot cross the state lines of Maine without ordering a lobster roll to devour on the coast. Andy’s Old Port Pub, located at 94 Commercial Street, is arguably the best one in town.

If you’re looking for something to wash that lobster roll down with, head over to Allagash Brewery, a great local spot with plenty of outdoor space to enjoy a flight. If you’re worried about Fido, don’t be — it’s dog-friendly ! Wrap up your time in Portland with a little art and history at the Portland Museum of Art, located at 7 Congress Street. This museum is the largest and oldest public art institution in the entire state so whether you’re into art or just plan on wandering aimlessly around, it’s a can’t-miss destination.

The old carriage roads you’ll encounter are beyond charming and *pro tip* — the popovers at Jordan Pond House Restaurant, located at 2928 Park Loop Road, are out of this world. It is definitely worth the stop for these crispy on the outside, soft and airy on the inside, pastries with a side of tea and jam.

maine lobster restaurant

Maine is known for killer lobster rolls and, you guessed it, beer. Stop at another Maine brewery, Atlantic Brewing Co., located at 15 Knox Road, for a pint. There you can take a tour of the brewery and then taste the classic beers. For those who prefer vino over beer, Bar Harbor Cellars Winery, located at 854 ME-3 is the place to go. This spot offers wine tasting experiences and be sure to pick up a bottle of your favorite on the way out.

Kennebunkport | 4-hour, 45-minute drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

New York (Upstate)

Yes, we’re a hop, skip, and a jump away from NYC but New York is a massive state and when you enter upstate NY, it’s like a whole new world from the concrete jungle we know and love. Full of quaint small towns with boutiques and beautiful scenery, Upstate NY is not a destination to be missed.

New Paltz | 1-hour, 30-minute drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

new paltz new york weekend getaway

New Paltz is a HG  favorite, all starting with the quaint Watergrasshill Bed and Breakfast at 105 Phillies Bridge Road. This B&B, named after an old Irish town, is the perfect place to stay for either a romantic getaway or a fun weekend with pals. While in town, you might consider buying a day pass to hike the Mohonk Preserve trails, all leading up to one breathtaking peak. After a fun-filled day of hiking, visit the famous Angry Orchard Cider House, located at 2241 Albany Post Road in Walden, NY for crisp ciders, tons of outdoor seating space, and food trucks galore. Also, the cider donuts made on-site are unreal.

A trip to New Paltz is not complete without walking the famous Huguenot Street. You can stop for cocktails at Huckleberry, located at 21 Church Street, dine outside, do a little antique shopping, and grab a scoop at Huguenot Creamery at 78 Main Street to end the night.

Saratoga Springs | 3-hour drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by The Saratoga Winery (@thesaratogawinery)

Saratoga is most notably known for the Saratoga Race Course, located at 267 Union Avenue. Even if a race isn’t happening during a visit, it’s worth making the trip to walk around the massive grounds. During the summer, the Saratoga Farmer’s Market is in full swing, making for the perfect summer activity. And of course, the sweeping hills of New York contain many well-known wineries and Saratoga is no exception. If you’re feeling in the mood for a glass of vino, wrap your trip up at The Saratoga Winery located at 462 Route 29.

Connecticut

Connecticut is a popular destination as part of the tri-state area because it’s a quick trip from Hudson County and offers a variety of landscapes, things to do, and towns to visit.

New Haven | 1-hour, 45-minute drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Yale University Art Gallery (@yaleartgallery)

This Connecticut city plays host to the prestigious Yale University, a gorgeous campus to stroll around on. And with the campus comes the Yale University Art Gallery at 1111 Chapel Street to add a touch of culture to your trip. New Haven is bursting with parks and greens to take advantage of in the summer (or fall for the best photo opportunities) and nestled amongst them is the breathtaking Five Mile Point Lighthouse, located at 2 Lighthouse Road, a must-see in town. End the day with a meal at one of New Haven’s finest restaurants. For farm-to-table fare, try ZINC at 964 Chapel Street, for an Italian meal at a wine bar, Skappo at 59 Crown Street; or for an upscale French dinner, Union League Cafe is the way to go at 1032 Chapel Street.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is known for its popular cities of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh , which contain a ton of historical value and things to do. However, PA is quite a large state so where you end up visiting may depend on how far you’re willing to travel.

Philadelphia | 1-hour, 30-minute drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Eastern State Penitentiary (@easternstate)

Philadelphia is one of the first spots to come to mind when we think of Pennsylvania, and the list of things to do in this city does not disappoint. Philadelphia certainly has no shortage of sports teams to route on from football to hockey to baseball and more. If you enjoy living on the edge, Eastern State Penitentiary at 2124 Fairmount Avenue is a popular tourist attraction, standing hauntingly empty where there once used to be a prison.

And for the Rocky fans out there, the Philadelphia Museum of Art at 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway plays host to yes, art, but more importantly, the famous steps that debuted in the Rocky films. Whether you’re going for a run-up and down them or actually using them to spend the day in the museum, they are an iconic Philly sight. For lunch or dinner plans, pay a visit to the Reading Terminal Market at 1136 Arch Street, which features over 80 food vendors.

Pittsburgh | 5-hour, 45-minute drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium (@pghzoo)

Pittsburgh simply doesn’t get enough credit for living in the limelight of Philadelphia as “the other major city in PA” but this city has a lot to offer. From sports like football and hockey to the famous Pittsburgh Zoo at 7370 Baker Street, there is truly something for everyone. Pittsburgh is also known for its second-to-none food scene. Enjoy dining outdoors at fantastic spots like Noodlehead at 242 South Highland Avenue, Point Brugge Cafe at 401 Hastings Street, and so many more.

Delaware is a tiny state but again, one that is full of culture. Enter Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach — two of Delaware’s most-known cities that are both just a few hours away from Hudson County.

Rehoboth Beach | 3-hour, 30-minute drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

rehoboth

Situated on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Delmarva Peninsula, Rehoboth Beach provides both fun in the sun (including a boardwalk) as well as city amenities, such as a movie theatre, restaurants, and shopping. Surrounding towns like Lewes and Dewey Beach are also fun to check out. If you’re looking to do some hiking, walking, or biking, head to Cape Henlopen State Park located at 15099 Cape Henlopen Drive in Lewes. For the shopping enthusiasts, there are three Tanger outlet locations located on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth with every store you can imagine. For coffee and breakfast fare, stop by Rise Up Coffee at 502 Rehoboth Avenue or The Point Coffee Shop + Bakery at 37140 Rehoboth Avenue Ext. When it’s time for dinner, head to Crabby Dick’s at 18831 Coastal Highway (we recommend the crab cakes and corn balls), Stop N Go Taco at 37229 Rehoboth Avenue, or Saketumi at 18814 Coastal Highway.

Wilmington | 2-hour drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Nemours Estate (@nemoursestate)

Wilmington is a city that has never-ending sites to see. For starters, the Nemours Estate at 1600 Rockland Road will transport you to France and make you feel as if you’re standing in the Chateau de Versailles garden. Exercise the cultural part of your brain by visiting the Hagley Museum and Library at 200 Hagley Creek Road, the Delaware Children’s Museum at 550 Justison Street, or the Delaware Art Museum at 2301 Kentmere Parkway. For those who are more active and looking to be outside, explore the Wilmington Riverwalk at 0 North Market Street, Bellevue State Park at 800 Carr Road, or the Brandywine Park and Zoo at 1001 North Park Drive.

Maryland is a very well-known destination for us New Jerseyans. Known not only for its city of Baltimore, home of the Orioles for all you baseball fans or the Ravens for the football fans out there, but Maryland is also full of beaches, which you may not have known before reading this article.

Baltimore | 3-hour drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by National Aquarium (@nationalaquarium)

Baltimore is another city that is full of history and the fact that it’s located right on a harbor is even better. Fort McHenry and Fell’s Point are two locales that offer up historical tidbits around every corner. Baltimore is also known for the National Aquarium at 501 East Pratt Street, which is considered to be one of the best in the world. Conclude your trip to this Maryland town with an outdoor dining reservation at one of the harbor’s favorite restaurants such as McCormick + Schmick’s Seafood + Steaks at 711 Eastern Avenue or Phillips Seafood at 601 East Pratt Street.

Ocean City | 4-hour drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Thrasher’s® Fries 🍟 (@thrashersfries)

The Ocean City beach and boardwalk are by far the biggest draw of this Maryland town. Enjoy a beautiful day on the beach riding the waves and end it on the boardwalk where you can eat, play, and stroll. Don’t even think about leaving this beach town without hitting up Thrasher’s Fries on the boardwalk, finished off with an ice cream cone at one of the many creamery destinations. Later on, hit up the Seacrets Distilling Company at 111 49th Street for hand-crafted spirits that will certainly lift yours.

Washington D.C. | 3-hour, 40-minute drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Smithsonian (@smithsonian)

Of course, D.C. is not a state of its own but it is a territory that is quite well-known because, well, it’s the capital of our country . With that comes endless opportunities to brush up on history and politics.

Pretty self-explanatory, this destination is technically not a state but contains just as much to do as anywhere else on this list. Obviously, if you’re in our nation’s capital and have yet to see these sights, stopping by the White House, The Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and National WWII Memorial are a must. D.C. also plays host to museums of all types. The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History at 10th Street and Constitution Avenue holds the world’s most extensive collection of natural history specimens, the United States Holocaust Museum at 100 Raoul Wallenberg Plaza SW is a living memorial to the Holocaust. While these are just our recommendations, you could walk around this city all day and never run out of things to do or see.

Virginia is the most southern state we’ll be taking you to in this guide and there are plenty of destinations to make the trek worth it. VA is home to a variety of city types but we feel that Williamsburg has it all — history, culture, family fun, and more.

Williamsburg | 5-hour, 50-minute drive from Hoboken + Jersey City

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Colonial Williamsburg (@colonialwmsburg)

The last stop on the East Coast destination tour, but certainly not the least. While Williamsburg is great for all ages if you have younger kids you really can’t go wrong here. This town is an extremely interactive way to engage your little ones in the rich history of our country. If you don’t already know, Williamsburg served as the capital of the Colony and Commonwealth of Virginia from 1699 to 1780 and acted as the center of political events leading to the American Revolution. That being said, Colonial Williamsburg is a must-see during your trip. You will be transported back in time through “townspeople” willing to tell their stories and include you in interactive experiences that tell a tale of Williamsburg long ago. If you want to stay away from a day full of history, Busch Gardens makes for a great, fun-filled day of amusement for the whole family.

Weekend Getaways in New Jersey That’ll Make You Feel Like the Boss

Published on 10/23/2019 at 12:04 AM

Hoboken, New Jersey

We’ve got news for any New Yorkers still harboring outdated, noxious notions about New Jersey. The city’s unfairly maligned neighbor is a great escape for apartment dwellers craving a little space, not to mention a respite from NYC’s aggressive pace. There’s enough fun to be had, in fact, that you’ll need a full weekend to enjoy every bit of it.   These eight getaway itineraries offer a respite for nature lovers, history buffs, and culture vultures who are looking to leave the weekend subway schedule behind. Springsteen soundtrack optional.

asbury lanes

Best Pop-Cultural Getaway: Asbury Park

The town that the Boss built sure isn’t what it used to be -- it’s even better. Beloved old haunts like The Stone Pony and Asbury Lanes have been spruced up just enough to turn them into hipster havens, but they haven’t lost their old charm. Sure, Asbury’s got the beach , but it’s become a year-round destination for anyone seeking that perfect mix of high and lowbrow. Play classic pinball games at the Silverball Museum before checking out an indie film at The ShowRoom . Head to Frank’s Deli for a bacon, egg, and cheese with enough bacon to give you a heart attack, or grab and go at MOGO , a Korean taco joint in a shipping container on the boardwalk. Get the bulgogi, and don’t forget the Asian pear hot sauce.   For a bit of a bougie brunch or dinner, chow down on gastropub bites at Cross & Orange . Then, sip a pint of Born To Run at Dark City Brewery and slake your sweet tooth with a scoop of honey lavender at Cookman Creamery . Whether you have a pet or just wish you did, The Wonder Bar ’s legendary yappy hour lets you grab a beer with a bunch of dogs and their humans. Once you’re nice and overstimulated, Soundbooth, the lobby bar at The Asbury Hotel , is a good place to chill after a long day. There are plenty of terrific accommodations neatby, but the pool at the Asbury Ocean Club is a unique treat -- it looks straight out to the horizon.

By public transit: Take the bus from Port Authority, two hours By car: One hour, 25 minutes

New Jersey State House

Most Historic Getaway: Trenton

History buffs will have a grand old time in New Jersey’s capital, which was briefly the US capital at the end of 1784. Learn the history of the Garden State at the New Jersey State Museum , where you can spend a whole day checking out fossils, fine art, and Native American artifacts. You can also get lost in space at the planetarium before you stroll over to the golden-domed New Jersey State House , the state’s most historic public building, or the Old Barracks Museum , a French and Indian War military barracks that celebrates colonial and revolutionary history. The 300-year-old William Trenton House , now a museum, also offers a look at life during the revolution. Or, for something off the beaten path, head to The Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie , a mansion in Cadwalader Park filled with rotating art exhibits focused on the city’s local history.

For some additional art history, head to the Grounds For Sculpture gardens where art and nature collide for one of a kind selfies. There are more than 270 sculptures from contemporary artists on display across 42 acres filled with exotic flora and fauna that make this a magical art experience. Grab a bite at the French-inspired Van Gogh Café where the ceiling is fashioned after The Starry Night, or order a picnic basket for two (must be placed 24 hours ahead) from the Peacock Café , a soup, salad, and sandwich joint.   For something even simpler, try a slice at Papa’s Tomato Pies , established in Trenton in 1912. Now located in nearby Robbinsville Township, the best way to get to the self-described oldest continuously-run pizza restaurant in the USA is by car.

Trenton’s most historic and only downtown hotel (the first hotel in the capital’s center in 16 years) is now permanently closed, so for a good night’s stay, take the 15-minute drive to the very modern Element Ewing in Princeton. Drive five minutes further, and you’ll reach Princeton’s more stately Peacock Inn . Originally built in the 1700s, the inn briefly housed Albert Einstein and, according to lore, its basement, known as “Peacock Alley,” was a Prohibition-era speakeasy.

By public transit: Take the NJ Transit from Penn Station to Trenton Transit Center, a 90-minute ride.  By car: One hour, 15 minutes

pier 13 hoboken

Best Getaway Close to NYC: Hoboken

When you’re tethered to the city but still need to catch your breath across state lines, Hoboken’s just a stone’s throw away. For $5.50 round trip on the PATH, this diverse neighborhood full of cheap international eats and watering holes is a major steal for anyone who’s over NYC nightlife . Start by bar hopping along Washington Street. The dog-friendly Louise & Jerry ’s serves up classic cocktails, while the divey 8th Street Tavern has a wide selection of beers and bar games. Splurge a little at The Madison and try a N.Y. State Of Mind, a rye-based cocktail with a Malbec float, before you grab a classic Italian sandwich at Fiore’s Deli , which has been serving up fresh mozzarella since 1903. Still hungry? Grab Greek Town ’s $10 signature yeero stuffed with beef and lamb and a helping of french fries.   From May through October, Hoboken’s Pier 13 is the place to be. During the day, the cash-only pier along the Hudson offers one-hour of paddleboarding or kayaking for $40 per person. Later, a DJ spins tunes while you fill up on food truck goodies and sip homemade punch, all while taking in the New York City skyline.   With your food and transportation costs under control, put yourself in the middle of the action, and book a room at the swanky W Hoboken . Located on River Street, it’s close to all the action, and rooms on the Spectacular level or higher have stunning city views. Go ahead and grab a pre-game drink at Lulu’s Outdoor Patio before you hit the town. And once you check out, sneak another peak of Manhattan from Castle Point Lookout , the highest point in Hoboken. Free of charge.   By public transit: The PATH train from 33rd Street, 20 minutes. Take the 15-minute ferry ride from Wall Street to Hoboken for $16 round trip.  By car: 30 minutes

Cape May, New Jersey houses

Most Romantic Getaway: Cape May

Spend some quality time with someone you love or just really like in the “ nation’s oldest seaside resort .” You should definitely check out the beaches, specifically the Cove where you’re likely to spot a dolphin. But the “crown jewel” of the Jersey Shore offers so much more for couples looking for a little R&R in a town that is a total blast from the past. Spend a day walking around the Cape May County Park & Zoo (it’s free!) or hike the trails of Cape May Point State Park . For the best view of this cozy Victorian town head to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse , built back in 1859.

A horse-drawn ride with the Cape May Carriage Company is practically required, as is a drink at The Brown Room , Cape May's first legal, post-Prohibition cocktail bar. For beachside vibes, get a room at the Sandpiper Beach Club . Looking to be pampered? Stay at The Queen Victoria . Voted the best B&B in Cape May since 2007, its afternoon tea served in the British style offers up some Downton Abbey realness.

Connect with nature and spend quality time with some very soft Jersey Shore Alpacas on a cozy farm, or go whale watching with your boo on the Yankee , an 80-foot-tall schooner. A glass or two of wine at The Willow Creek Winery will imbue you with the courage to brave a haunted trolley ride . Take a stroll through the pedestrian-only Washington Street Mall and peruse the shops before you share a float at the ’50s-style soda shop Stewart’s Root Beer . Enjoy a seven-course tasting menu for $65 per person at The Red Store , named one of the 30 best NJ restaurants in 2019 . And while hot dogs aren’t necessarily synonymous with romance, you wouldn’t want to miss local favorite Hot Dog Tommy’s , where they top their franks with mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, or crunchy Asian noodles.

By public transit: Take a bus from Port Authority to Atlantic City where you’ll take another bus to Cape May, five hours By car: Two hours, 35 minutes

Steel Pier

Most Iconic Getaway: Atlantic City

Once a glitzy destination for New Yorkers of yore, modern day Atlantic City still rings a lot of bells. Go ahead and snap a selfie in a windowless casino for posterity, but get out before you lose any money at the blackjack table. Instead, lounge on the beach with a sandwich, don’t forget the hot peppers, from local institution Dino’s Subs and Pizza Spot , which delivers right to the shore. Buy salt water taffy at James’ or Fralinger’s along the four mile long boardwalk, where they’ve both been since 1880 and 1885, respectively. For one of the best views of Atlantic City head to Steel Pier , A.C.’s oldest theme park, for a ride on the 227-foot-tall Wheel, then treat yourself to the ice cream-topped waffles at Two Cents Plain , celebrating its 46th anniversary this year.

The waterfront views at the historic Gardner’s Basin are as lovely today as they were in its heyday, and if you climb the 228 steps to the top of the Absecon Lighthouse , the tallest lighthouse in the state, you’ll be rewarded with an aerial view of A.C.   A boardwalk staple since 1897, the upscale still family-owned Dock’s Oyster House is where you go for oysters (duh), and the steak and potatoes at the the over hundred-year-old Knife & Fork Inn comes with a side of history. Enoch Johnson, the inspiration for Steve Buscemi’s Boardwalk Empire character, Nucky Thompson, was a regular.   Visit the Borgata ’s 54,000-square-foot immersion spa that sits 32 stories high and offers a 360-degree view of the ocean. But don’t stay at the casino, opt for the historic Chelsea Pub & Inn , instead. It’s an 1880s Victorian-style home with crooked stairs located just a block away from the boardwalk and the Tropicana. And make sure to visit Lucy, the Elephant , a six-story elephant built in 1881 that is now a National Historic Landmark. Looking is free, but to go inside this icon, you’ll have to pay $8.50.

By public transit: Take the Greyhound from Port Authority to Atlantic City; two hours, 30 minutes. By car: Two hours

twin lights lighthouse

Best Outdoor Getaway: Atlantic Highlands

This Victorian borough, which was once a popular resort town for wealthy New Yorkers, is now a serene hideaway for nature lovers. Head to Mount Mitchill , the highest natural elevation on the Atlantic seaboard south of Maine, for a panoramic view of the New York City skyline. Or, pop 1.8 miles over to nearby Highlands and explore nearly 20 miles of trails by foot or by bike (be warned, it’s hilly) at Hartshorne Woods Park . Overlooking the Navesink River, the 794-acre forest offers fishing, horseback riding, and group cabin camping by reservation. Highlands also boasts Mobys Lobster Deck , a waterfront eatery offering ocean views, and the Twin Lights Lighthouse , which has been guiding sailors since 1828 with what was once the brightest light in North America.   Back in Atlantic Highlands, treat yourself to a pecan sticky bun at the French bakery The Flaky Tart . Looking for a hearty sit-down breakfast? The charming ‘60s-style Zoe’s Vintage Kitchen is where the locals go for omelets and pancakes.

After your snack, take a guided tour of the Strauss Mansion , built by New York merchant Adolph Strauss in 1893. The Queen Anne-style cottage has 21 rooms, including one dedicated to the history of the local Lenni Lenape people. Later, grab a beer at Carton Brewing Company . When you’re ready to hit the hay, the Blue Bay Inn is an affordable boutique hotel a hop, skip, and a jump from the shore, the ferry, and The Copper Canyon , a Southwestern-style eatery with 150 tequila choices.   By public transit: Take NJ Transit from Penn Station to Red Bank Station where you’ll switch trains. Get off at Rt-36 at Grand Avenue and walk five minutes into town for a trip that totals two hours. The ferry from East 35th Street will get you there in an hour -- 40 minutes if you catch it from Wall Street. By car: One hour, 30 minutes

Red Bank, NJ

Best Quiet Getaway: Red Bank

This hip little town along the Jersey Shore is a low-key Jersey excursion if you think Asbury Park is too crowded. The arts are a main draw here, so catch a show at the Two River Theater , which is known for developing and supporting up and coming artists. For live music, head to The Count Basie Center For The Arts . And for Jay and Silent Bob fans, Red Bank is the home of the comic shop owned by Kevin Smith and named in honor of his characters.   Should you feel so inspired to make a little art of your own, head to Toad Hollow , a whimsical craft store owned by two sisters who really love knitting. Further scratch that crafting itch at A Time To Kiln where you can paint your own ceramic dishes or do a little glass fusing. A fitting souvenir to remember your trip by.

Stay at The Molly Pitcher Inn , an elegant waterfront hotel built back in 1928 that looks like its right out of a storybook. Or, book a room at its sister hotel, The Oyster Point , where you can dine on their riverside dock watching the sailboats float on by. Lean into those good vibes over breakfast, lunch or dinner at Toast City Diner , where the motto is “peace, love, and pancakes.” Teak ’s rooftop is also the perfect spot to zen out and grab some out of the ordinary sushi rolls like the Black Mamba, filled with shrimp tempura, spicy lobster salad, and banana.

By public transit: Take NJ Transit from Port Authority to Red Bank, an hour and 20 minutes.  By car: One hour

Beach Plum Farm

Best Food Getaway: West Cape May

The cool cousin to neighboring Cape May, this funky and offbeat Jersey town is a smorgasbord of deliciousness that is easiest to tackle by car. Start your food tour early at The Bread Lady , a popular roadside stand (read: long lines that are well worth it) run by Elizabeth Degener at the foot of her family’s Enfin Farms . While you may not have a choice of flavors if you don’t go early -- the stand opens at 10am, people start lining up at 9 -- try for a loaf of raisin spice or beet and dill. Next, stop by Beach Plum Farm for homemade lavender doughnuts before you sit down for a real farm-to-table breakfast or lunch in the Amish barn. Your meal’s ingredients come right from the 60-acre farm, which was named a 2019 Local Hero by Edible Jersey . Take home some of those fresh herbs and produce at the on-site market, or take a self-guided tour of the land to make room for your next meal.   The beachside joint Key West Tacos serves Caribbean spiced tacos filled with fresh seafood, and Gecko’s next door offers up Sante Fe-inspired dishes like stewed pork in green chile sauce. For all day breakfast, head to Bella Vida Cafe for vegetarian and vegan options with Costa Rican flair. (Think tons of fruit, veggies, and fresh seafood.) End your day at Sapore Italiano , a farm-fresh BYOB Italian restaurant in a restored Victorian-style home. Spend the night at the West Cape Motel near the Cape May bird sanctuary and nab a few more loaves from the Bread Lady for the ride home.

By public transit: Take a bus from Port Authority to Atlantic City where you’ll switch to another bus headed for Broadway and Mechanic Street, five hours. By car: Two hours, 40 minutes
