There’s no TV show or rapping host. But with Trek you get the chance to pimp a different type of ride. For a hefty price, Trek’s Project One program gives riders the chance to fully customize a road bike — down to the cable housing and grip tape.

To start, you pick from one of 13 Trek bikes to pimp, including Madone and Equinox TTX models. You can spend as little as $3,400 or as much as $8,600 for the base bike. From there, you tweak color and graphics, add your own text to the frame, customize wheels and components, change the color of the grip tape, and more.

You can make your bike as plain or elaborate as you want. All customization happens onscreen and in a Web browser. Hit “buy” and your custom steed will be in the works in short order.

You could modify basic options like color for free or upgrade the drivetrain for more than $1,900. You could even change the wheels and subtract more than $2,000.

Once you order your ride, it’ll take about a week to build — not bad for a custom bike. https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/projectone

Trek Bikes History

Trek Bicycle Corporation Logo

Over the last 42 years, this company has continually worked to refine and improve its products and persuaded the world to join in and take the journey towards better health and fitness.

The Early Years

  • Trek’s story began in December 1975 in a barn when Dick Burke invested a sum of $25,000 to manufacture steel touring frames to battle those produced in Japan and Italy.
  • Initially, the idea was to make the world’s best bikes but it was not until 1982 that they managed to actually manufacture their first complete bike as a company after acquiring more space and building a factory. In 1983 , they made their first mountain bike.
  • Later in 1984 , they launched aftermarket parts and accessories line, Trek Components Group (TCG) .
  • The period between 1985 and 1991 could be described as the technology frontier for Trek. In 1985, they borrowed from aircraft and other bike companies’ technology and introduced their first bonded aluminum bike frame in 2000.
  • Later in 1986 Trek followed up the success of 2000 with a 3-tube carbon composite model, The Trek 2500.

This was Trek’s entry into the world of carbon fiber. That same year, to keep up with rapidly growing sales, they added another 75,000 sq ft (7,000 m 2 ) of manufacturing space to its Waterloo headquarters.

  • In 1988 , Trek bikes introduced “ Trek Wear ,” which strongly indicated the company’s entry into the cycling apparel business. A year later, Trek ventured into foreign markets, opening subsidiary offices in the UK  and in Germany.

That same year Trek introduced its Jazz brand of bicycles, a collection of entry-level and kids’ bikes designed by Trek but manufactured in Taiwan. Jazz bicycles were discontinued in 1993.

Trek 2500

The famous Trek 2500

  • In 1992 , They launched their first bikes built with a full-carbon frame, the 5500 and 5200 which featured Optimum Compaction Low Void ( OCLV ) frames. These went on to become the world’s lightest production bikes with a frame weighing around 1.11kg.

The company further expanded its space to accommodate the new OCLV manufacturing facility.

  • In 1992 , Trek also introduced their first full-suspension mountain bike, the 900 series which featured the T3C suspension system. In 1993, Trek also acquired Gary Fisher Mountain Bikes, named after Gary Fisher , one of the inventors of the mountain bike and one of the most popular names in off-road cycling.

Fisher had founded Gary Fisher Mountain Bikes in 1983 and sold his company in 1991 to Taiwan’s Anlen company, remaining on as President.

The Later Years

  • From there it has been all systems go for Trek bikes with a various event marking their success such as introducing a full suspension Y bike in 1995 and signing three-time Tour de France champion Greg LeMond to get LeMond Racing Cycles on its feet (1995), although the relationship with LeMond soured in 2008 as both sides alleged breach of contract.
In 2006 Trek launched the “ 1 World 2 Wheels ” campaign. The idea was to encourage Americans to swap their cars for bikes on trips of two miles or less.

Today their mission is to “Help the world use the bicycle as a simple solution to complex problems” such as easing traffic congestion, improving health, seeing the world, and combating climate change.

They’ve cut their coal emissions to nil and parking spaces at their headquarters are allocated for carpoolers only.

Trek Bikes Model Range

Today, Trek produces everything from high-end road, mountain, and triathlon bikes to hybrid, comfort, cruiser, and kids’ bikes. These products are available at a range of prices; the high-performance bikes will require you to dig deeper into your pocket while other bikes are more affordable.

They have also designed bikes and accessories to fit female riders since 2000 and they have a custom bike program called Project One, where customers can choose their own paint scheme and component mix.

Trek Mountain Bikes

Trek Powerfly LT 9 Plus

Trek’s mountain bikes are made for off-road adventure, fun, and competition. Among their extensive range of 13 models, you can find something to take on any off-road conditions and fit every budget and rider preference.

They categorize the bikes into four groups: six cross-country models, four trail models, two downhill models, and one fat bike model. Additionally, there are electric mountain bikes which we discuss below.

Among the styles, you can find hardtails, full-suspension gravity bikes; 29″, 27.5″, mulleted wheels; aluminum, steel, and carbon frames; and a range of options from a beginner hardtail to a World Championship-winning beast.

The Trek Slash 9.9 XX1 enduro is the most expensive in the range, with an RRP of over $12,500; at the other end of their range, you have the sub-$500 steel-framed Trek 820 cross-country bike.

Interesting design technologies include Trek’s  advanced OCLV Mountain Carbon frame and progressive sizing geometry. Other innovative MTB technologies from the company include Active Braking Pivot, IsoStrut shock—structural suspension, IsoSpeed frame-integrated suspension, and Mono Link adjustable geometry.

Trek Road Bikes

Trek Émonda SLR 7

Trek is most widely recognized for its exceptional road bicycles, used by the World Tour team Trek Segafredo. Their road bikes are made for speed and efficiency on paved surfaces and gravel.

The company makes four distinct styles of road bikes in a range of builds:

  • Aero (Madone) – Most popular racing bike for its aerodynamic tubing
  • Lightweight all-rounder (Emonda) – The all-rounder lightweight climbing choice
  • Endurance (Domane) – Built for comfort over long distances, with more relaxed, stable geometry and 38mm tire clearance
  • Gravel – A fast off-roader with mounts for accessories and more tire clearance

You can find Trek road bikes with OCLV Carbon or Alpha Aluminum frames and SRAM or Shimano groupsets, depending on the price, which ranges from just over $1,000 for the cheapest Domane AL 2 to over $12,500 for the highest spec version of each.

Some exciting technologies used on Trek’s road bikes include invisible cabling design, IsoCore vibration dampening, and adjustable IsoSpeed micro-suspension.

Trek also mentions its aim to make each bike as effective as possible for both sexes, eliminating the need to find a women-specific model.

Trek Hybrid Bikes

FX Sport 6 black

Urban & Commuter / Fitness / Dual-sport / Recreation / Women’s / Kids’

Aluminum / Carbon

Trek hybrids are another hugely popular range of bikes among casual cyclists. These urban bikes are designed for versatility and benefit from the trickle-down of technology from the brand’s most innovative models. These hybrids include:

  • FX 1-6 – This is a speedy fitness bike with a rigid fork
  • Dual Sport 1-4 – A suspension fork hybrid built to tackle off-road terrain or function as a fully-equipped commuter
  • Verve 1-3 – This is the ultimate comfortable hybrid bike with upright geometry and a low-step option available

These bikes come in various builds, including OCLV Carbon or Alpha Aluminum for the frames; step-over, step-thru, or low-step designs; IsoZone handlebar-integrated suspension, IsoSpeed Decoupler for endurance comfort, and mounts for a rack and fenders.

These bikes range from around $500 for the cheapest FX 1 to over $2,000 for the most expensive FX 6 Carbon and can be paired with various accessories to customize the bikes for your diverse urban or commuter needs.

Trek Electric Bikes

Trek Verve+ 3 electric bike

Each of Trek’s traditional bike ranges has a selection of e-bikes to complement it. This includes eHybrid, eMTB, and eRoad.

  • Allant+ and Verve+ – Two fully equipped urban hybrid electric bikes, the Allant being the more sporty of the two
  • E-Caliber, Rail, and Powerfly – Three full-suspension e-mountain bike options. The Rail is a long-travel MTB, and the E-caliber is a super lightweight XC bike
  • Domane+ – Trek’s endurance road model goes electric with a lightweight and comfortable design that makes all-day riding a breeze

All of their bicycles use Bosch e-bike systems. Bosch produces some of the most innovative systems on the market with stylish integration, powerful mid-drive motors, and large-capacity batteries.

Trek uses the design technology found on their traditional bikes on many of their electric ranges, such as the IsoZone, IsoSpeed suspension, and premium frame engineering.

In addition, Trek’s subsidiary brand Electra has two comfort-focused “Recreation” electric models, the Townie Path Go and Attitude Go, and one hybrid, the Vale Go.

These e-bikes cover a wide price range, comparable to the standard bikes, beginning at around $1,600 for the entry-level Electra Townie up to $12,500 and $13,500 for the top-end road and MTB models.

Got a 1989 Trek 1400 road bike, I love that thing, it was converted to STI brifters, and the bike itself even for today’s standards is so light!

I haven’t had the privilege to ride it, but the bike looks great! I’m sure it rides like the wind 🙂

Please doble check when you buy a Trek bike! For self experience, I bought one 10 month ago (all stock) and the chainring start touching the frame. I thought it was normal because I think they put correct components. But that was not the case they put a 36t and 26t xt crankset. My frame is completely damaged and I was worry because I do not want to get a accident. I went to the shop and they tell me was my fault they don’t give me any guaranty so that what I think this bike it’s worst do not buy repeat.

Oh man, sad to hear. What model was it?

Trek 1.1 review

The Trek 1.1 is Trek's bottom rung road bike, but that doesn't mean budget ride quality

  • Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter

Trek 1.1 cheap road bikes

The Trek 1.1 has got plenty of great features to like. It's a comfortable alloy frame with a carbon fork and it's versatile thanks to the pannier mounts. If you can look past the weight and the iffy brakes this would be a great bike for new riders or those wanting to start commuting to the office.

Comfortable ride

Carbon fork

Tubeless ready wheels

Pannier rack/mudguard compatible

Brakes could be better

You can trust Cycling Weekly. Our team of experts put in hard miles testing cycling tech and will always share honest, unbiased advice to help you choose. Find out more about how we test.

At £625, the Trek 1.1, alongside the Trek Lexa 2, occupies the lowest level of Trek’s bike roster. But, for its diminutive status, it delivers a tidy ride that’d definitely be befitting a beginner rider.

Buy now: Trek 1.1 at Evans Cycles for £625

Despite occupying the lower rungs of Trek’s hierarchy, the 1.1 is still given that distinctively Trek sloping top tube boasting Trek’s H2 fit system, a feature that the brand believes to be the optimum on bike position.

>>> Best cheap bikes under £1000: bikes from £260 ridden and rated

According to the company, it’s a feature that travels right to the top, with Trek-Segafredo riders also using the same fit system to get their race machines right.

In real life, it’s certainly not uncomfortable, and the soft bend in the arms is comfortable enough for extended rides at least, and the size 56cm fit my 5,11 frame comfortably.

The frame itself is made from 100 series Alpha Aluminium, which happily brings a balance between comfort and weight. Meanwhile, the carbon fork helps eliminate road buzz and keep the weight down as much as possible.

Other neat touches include the mounts for pannier racks as well as mudguard compatibility, which definitely helps make this a truly versatile machine, whether you want to go far or just commute to the office.

Specification

As an entry-level bike, you’re naturally looking at some entry level components, and the Trek 1.1 doesn’t come flashing the sportiest of gear, but happily, it all functions well.

The 1.1’s drivechain is a bit of a mish mash of parts. Shimano Claris takes care of shifting, with its Claris range making up the shifters as well as both front and rear derailleurs. The crankset and cassette meanwhile are outsourced to Vuelta Corsa and Sunrace respectively. No doubt to keep costs down.

The Claris shifting performed well, as you’d expect from a low-end groupset from Shimano – a company that traditionally does budget very well.

>>> Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo groupsets explained

However, the performance of the brakes was less inspiring. They will stop you eventually, but they’re not the most effective. Mix in a grabby, stiff action and they're not the most confident inspiring.

Elsewhere, the Bontrager AT-750 wheels felt bombproof, and they're tubeless ready. The 25mm rubber they’re shod with are also a welcome touch, adding comfort to the ride, although these aren't tubeless ready so you'll have to upgrade if you want to go down that route.

The rest of the finishing kit is made up of Bontrager’s in house parts, all of which did the job well. Up front the Bontrage Race handlebar brings some serious width to the front end, which won't be to everyones preferences, but new riders will enjoy the added comfort.

The ride quality of the Trek 1.1 is on point for its price. The aluminium frame irons out the bumps in the road, while the carbon fork evens out any jarring hand buzz, making for a very comfortable ride.

The upright position definitely helps here, and the wide bars help keep your arms in a comfortable position while holding your shoulders in a sustainable position. Its large looking frame is also  dead stable at speed. it's comforting to ride, at no point feeling jittery or nervous.

Watch: Handlebar height and reach – how to get them right

Of course, such levels of stability can often mean a diminishment in mobility, and the Trek 1.1 is not an agile bike likely to make fast turns or whip around road furniture. At this level though, it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make for the level of comfort on offer from the bike.

This size and stability does mean that the Trek 1.1 comes with a weight penalty, and at 9.33kg it is a bit of a beast to haul up and over those hills. Helpfully, the compact chainset (50/34 configuration) coupled with the 11-28, 8 speed cassette on the back makes getting up those inclines just that little bit easier.

>>> How to ride faster up short, steep hills (video)

Matching the Trek 1.1 against other major cycling retailers reveals that it’s not too far off the money in terms of its spec.

Giant’s entry level machine, the Contend 2, costs £50 less but comes with the same, Shimano Claris drivechain, and configuration of own brand finishing kit. Although on the Trek you are getting a carbon fork.

Both companies are put in the shade by B’Twin though, which offers its Triban 540 road bike for £650, equipped with a carbon fork and Shimano 105 , a higher end groupset.

Trek Madone 3.1 review

Versatile carbon framed road bike

Russell Burton / Future Publishing

trek one cykel

Trek's 3 Series is the third up in its seven-model road bike range – and the first to offer carbon frames. It may be Trek 's lowest price carbon offering, but the company is keen to stress how much technology has gone into this frame.

Certainly the lines look familiar, and there is a good combination of features aimed at performance and practicality, which makes a lot of sense at this price.

  • HIGHS: Fine riding, versatile frame and do-anything gearing
  • LOWS: The wheels lack go and the brakes are slow to slow
  • BUY IF... You want a fine day-long ride with scope to upgrade

The 3.1's tapered head tube and steerer come in Trek's slightly taller H2 fit, which will suit most riders and does away with ugly-looking stacks of spacers. We easily found a good position that was low enough on our 56cm model, even with the compact bar, which sensibly makes the drops more accessible.

Bontrager supplies everything on the Madone except for the groupset, and it's all reliable kit, the Affinity 1 saddle being the item most likely to split opinions – we found it to be a good shape but a little over-padded.

The OCLV (optimum compaction low volume) frame uses Trek's favoured construction method to minimise the quantity of resin and carbon needed and produce a light, strong frame. A giant BB86.5 bottom bracket allows the down tube to fill almost all of the width between the cranks, necessitating protective shields on the chainstay and down tube to guard against an unshipped chain.

The right fork leg incorporates an ANT+ compatible Speed Trap speed sensor, while Trek's neat hidden dropout mounts allow full-length mudguards to be fitted.

The Trek is available with an all- Shimano drivetrain or SRAM; our model came with Shimano 105 plus a Tiagra front mech and SRAM GXP compact chainset.

Braking is courtesy of some unbranded, mudguard-friendly long-reach dual-pivot callipers. The drivetrain works well together, and benefits from the chainset's 30mm axle that makes good use of that super-sized bottom bracket shell, but it does have a bit of a parts bin feel to it.

The Madone's ride quality is firm but composed over rougher road surfaces and unerringly stable, but with an excellent feel and a rapidity that shows its long racing lineage. The handling while cornering and descending is surefooted, but could be improved by more positive brakes.

With a 30t sprocket, the lowest gear should conquer the steepest climbs, but the Bontrager Approved wheels aren't the most willing climbers and seem to dull efforts, putting them at odds with the frame. Overall, the Trek's slightly docile character lends itself to lengthy rides, but there's a racer lurking within that some faster hoops could release.

Ellen Nobles "ultimative" cykelgave

Robbie McEwens Ultimate Madone

Amity Rockwells cool Checkpoint

United in Gravel med Shimano

Does Mads Pedersen have the blingest bike at the Tour De France?

The Dane will be racing on a rather special, custom-painted Trek Madone SLR

Mads Pedersen's rainbow-coloured Trek Madone

Trek has followed the trend of manufacturers unveiling new bikes and custom equipment at the Tour de France . The American brand and co-sponsor of Trek- Segafredo which has become Lidl-Trek , unveiled a seriously eye-catching custom-painted iridescent Trek Madone SLR for Danish star Mads Pederson ahead of the race's first stage in Bilbao .

The Tour de France usually sees teams and individual riders issued with special equipment and one-off bikes. Due to its position at the tip of the WorldTour pyramid, the biggest bike race in the world presents an excellent shop window for teams, brands and manufacturers to release designs and equipment that stand out from the rest.

Pederson will surely arrive at the Tour with hopes after taking a stage win at the Giro d'Italia in May, becoming the 105th rider to win a stage at all three Grand Tours . A few days later, the ex-world champion then had to abandon the race ahead of Stage 13, it's probably safe to say Pederson will arrive at the Tour looking to add to his stage win last year

Tech Editor Josh Croxton is on the ground for Cyclingnews in Spain ahead of the races Grand Départ and managed to get some close-up snaps of the custom Trek Madone.

Lectric ONE shockingly unveiled as low-cost premium e-bike with auto-shifting gearbox

Avatar for Micah Toll

In what is likely to the biggest shock unveiling in the e-bike industry so far this year, leading electric bike maker Lectric Ebikes has just rolled out the new Lectric ONE . Positioned as a premium commuter e-bike in the budget space, the new model marks equally new territory for the low-cost e-bike company turned premium space competitor.

To understand how industry-shaking this e-bike launch is, you have to understand the company behind it. Lectric Ebikes’ entire MO has been to find highly-demanded niches in the US e-bike market and then roll out new models at a fraction of the cost of competitors. That’s how we got crowd favorites like the $799 Lectric XP Lite and the $999 Lectric XP 3.0 , known as the best-selling e-bike in the country.

Now the company is doing it again, but targeting a much… much fancier type of e-bike segment. That means that the traditional budget-level derailleurs and chains are now being replaced by top-tier European transmissions and carbon fiber-reinforced drive belts.

lectric one e-bike

Look no further than the Lectric ONE’s auto-shifting electric gearbox from Pinion, a German manufacturer whose same gearboxes routinely land on $10,000+ e-bikes such as those from Swiss manufacturer Stromer. Pinion’s highly acclaimed bike gearboxes are modeled after automotive transmissions and are widely seen as the holy grail of bicycle transmissions.

But Lectric didn’t just opt for a fancy gearbox, they chose the even higher-end version of Pinion’s 6-speed lineup with automatic electric shifting. That feature allows complete customization of the shifting parameters, letting riders dial in their performance marks such as ideal cadence, shift points, preferred gear to downshift into at stops automatically, and more, all from the bike’s dashboard display.

The weather-sealed gearbox is maintenance-free, just like the industry-leading Gates Carbon Belt drive found on the bike. As a replacement for bicycle chains, Gates’ carbon fiber-reinforced belts are quieter, smoother, longer-lasting, and more efficient than chains over their entire lifespan. And to top it all off, they don’t require maintenance such as oiling or washing.

And similarly to the move with Pinion’s gearbox, Lectric again climbed up to nearly the top shelf of the component hierarchy, opting for Gate’s premium CDC belt and CDX sprocket.

The inclusion of largely maintenance-free hydraulic disc brakes on 180 mm rotors adds one more component to the list of parts that riders won’t have to worry about keeping in tune.

lectric one e-bike

And despite the 55-lb (25 kg) Lectric ONE ‘s positioning as a lightweight commuter e-bike, it still packs in the extra power we’ve come to know and love from Lectric. A true 750W-rated Stealth M24 motor can be found in the rear wheel, offering speeds of up to 28 mph (45 km/h). The company explained, “As the lightest e-bike with a 750-watt motor, the Lectric ONE boasts the highest power-to-weight ratio of any e-bike ever, offering lightning-fast starts and quick acceleration.”

Two 48V battery options are available, either 10.4Ah or 14Ah. The 500Wh and 672Wh batteries offer maximum ranges of 50 miles and 75 miles, respectively. Both are UL-compliant for added safety and peace of mind.

The Lectric ONE includes a new color LCD display, a 24-amp potted motor controller helping that 750W motor put out over 1,300W of peak power, a left-side thumb throttle, a side-sweeping kickstand, 20″x2.5″ city tires, a thru-axle front hub, integrated front and rear LED lighting, a telescoping seat post and handlebars for wider range of size adjustments, and hidden cable routing.

trek one cykel

The one area that struck me as an odd choice was the inclusion of a cadence sensor over a torque sensor. Generally, torque sensors are incorporated on nicer bikes like these to reduce sensor lag, which is often associated with cadence sensors. But Lectric Ebikes’ Co-founder and CEO Levi Conlow reassured me, explaining how “while most cadence sensors have 12 magnets, our has 96 of them, so we’ve got 8x the resolution and much snappier feedback.”

Lectric’s signature PWR pedal assist is also included, offering current-based pedal assist levels instead of speed based. While it’s not the same as a true torque sensor, it does significantly bridge the gap by removing the lurching feeling often found in speed-based pedal-assist e-bikes. And with 8x the number of cadence sensor magnets, the pedal assist lag should be significantly reduced as well.

Perhaps the most impressive feature of all on the Lectric ONE isn’t a component, but rather the price. The bike is launching at $1,999 with a standard range battery, though a longer range battery is available as a $200 upgrade. To put that into perspective, it would be difficult to walk into a bike shop today and order that Pinion automatic shifting gearbox for less than $1,999, let alone receive an entire well-designed bike for that price.

Pre-orders for the new e-bike are now open, with shipping expected to begin in May. Color choices are limited to black or… well, just black. Fortunately, the company has a wide range of accessories to choose from, helping riders make the bike unique and customized to various types of riding. Just don’t worry about a rear rack or fender set, those are included free for anyone who puts down a pre-order now.

Electrek’s Take

This is kind of crazy, folks.

At this point, it seems like Lectric is just playing God with the entire e-bike market. I’m not exaggerating when I say this gearbox is extremely expensive. You literally couldn’t buy just gearbox for the price of this bike. It’s only through Lectric’s massive size and extreme purchasing power that they could even put it on a bike in this price class. The next cheapest e-bike I can find that has this same Pinion C1.6i auto-shifting gearbox is the Stromer ST7 , which is a $13,000 electric bike.

Why they even went this direction, that’s a whole other question. Belt drive e-bikes can’t use a derailleur like a chain drive can, so if you don’t want to be stuck with a single speed on a belt drive, you need to either use an internally geared rear hub, which forces you to use a mid-drive motor (the standard solution) or use a gearbox at the pedals. And if you want to include a throttle, then your mid-drive options are limited and problematic (mid-drive motors with throttles love to chew up transmissions), giving more weight to the idea of replacing a mid-drive motor with a central gearbox. I never thought I’d actually see Lectric do it though, as it’s truly several classes above anything the company has produced before.

When trying to think about which bikes the Lectric ONE will compete against, I’m largely coming up empty. Instead, I think it’s creating a new class of bikes – premium value commuters. It sounds like an oxymoron, a premium-value bike. But that’s what they’ve built here. It almost fills the void left by bikes like the VanMoof A5 , creating a fairly lightweight and small-wheeled, automatic shifting commuter e-bike with a sleek design. Except that it does so at half the price, and without the same level of in-house proprietary technology that doomed VanMoof into bankruptcy .

I feel like I’m still processing all that went into this bike, and the craziness of launching it at this price. Sure, it’s not for everyone. If you want fat tires or suspension, they’ve got a great $999 e-bike for you . But for folks who want a lighter, more efficient commuter e-bike, and suddenly want an insanely fancy automatic shifting gearbox paired with a Gates carbon belt drive, this is a weirdly affordable way to make it happen at just $1,999 .

It’s a brave new world.

Trek bicycle Copenhagen Hellerup Skulle i dag køber noget i butikken.

Værste cykelbutik i Danmark

Havde kørt 2x14 km for at prøve cyklen.

0 Stjerner her fra.

Trek mtb, elendig lak..

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Review – Episodes 1-4

In the future when all’s well….

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Review – Episodes 1-4 - IGN Image

Since its debut in 2017, Star Trek: Discovery has undergone many more onscreen changes than the average Trek show, featuring a different captain in each of its first four seasons, transporting its crew 900 years into the future for a full reset after Season 2, basically destroying the United Federation of Planets (don’t worry, it got better), and perhaps most notably, introducing its main character, Michael Burnham, at one of the lowest points possible for a Starfleet character – as a hated mutineer in Season 1 – only to eventually have her become the inspiring captain of the USS Discovery.

Indeed, as Discovery enters its fifth and final season, that is where we find Burnham, played by the always great Sonequa Martin-Green: She’s in charge of the Disco, has saved the galaxy a couple of times over, and is a pretty different person than she was when we first met her. Some might even say, with apologies to Will Riker, that she’s more seasoned now … But if the thrust of Burnham’s arc has always been to push out of the box she had placed herself in in the pilot – even last season, when she was captain, she was continuously at odds with the president of the Federation! – how can showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise keep things interesting now that the character, essentially, has it all?

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Images

Paramount Plus

For one thing, after the events of the Season 4 finale, she doesn’t really have it all anymore. Her partner, Cleveland “Book” Booker (David Ajala) – one of the best things about the show since the time-jump at the start of Season 3 – has been disgraced after falling in with the wrong crowd last season (long story). He’s doing his penance, working for Starfleet now – “I go where the Federation tells me,” he says – but Burnham and Book’s romantic relationship has seemingly come to an end… even as he rejoins the ship to help in the search for this season’s McGuffin (more on that in a bit).

Interestingly, Book’s fall from grace parallels Burnham’s own from back in Season 1, but the damage last season’s incident did to their connection isn’t the only personal challenge facing the captain now. Whereas she has so often punched up in the past – at her captains, her superiors, even, as noted, the president – at the start of Season 5 Michael is introduced to a new frenemy who she must contend with: Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). As a Starfleet skipper who came into his own during the rough and tumble years after The Burn, Rayner takes a more raw approach to his missions, as in their first meeting when he’s willing to put his ship and crew at risk while attempting to capture some baddies.

What's the best Star Trek series of the past 10 years?

Without delving into spoilers, I will note that in the first four episodes of the season that Paramount+ has provided for review, Burnham and Rayner’s relationship goes in a different direction than I was expecting, and it’s a refreshing one that seems to affirm that Michael really has grown as a character over the course of her time on Discovery. Things reach a peak in Episode 4 (again, the last one I’ve seen at the time of this writing), as the pair find themselves on something of a standalone adventure that is fun, intriguing, and the perfect forum for a connection to begin between the two characters. Rennie, forever immortalized as Leoben on Battlestar Galactica , harnesses his edgy persona to great effect as a new regular castmember.

But about those baddies: They’re the human Moll (Eve Harlow) and alien L'ak (Elias Toufexis), a pair of couriers not unlike the pair of couriers that Burnham and Book once were (when Michael was separated from her ship between Seasons 2 and 3). Moll and L’ak are looking for an ancient piece of technology which, no joke, can be connected to an episode of 1990s Trek in the most tenuous of ways. An overreliance on treasure hunt-style stories has been a weakness of Discovery since Season 2, taking entire seasons to resolve as the characters go from clue to clue week by week. Unfortunately, it looks like Season 5 is continuing in that vein. But Harlow and Toufexis bring a certain likability to their characters that is intriguing, and as noted above, the show seems to be figuring out how to do breakout episodes if the fourth hour is any indication.

As always, the production design and visual effects on Discovery are outstanding and feature-quality, even if some of the events being depicted occasionally stretch credulity even by sci-fi standards. Burnham riding the outside of a starship while at warp speed is a tough one for an old nerd like me to take, but there’s no denying that it looks as realistic as Burnham riding the outside of a starship at warp speed could look!

Star Trek Face-Off: Who Is the Best Crew Member?

Pick a winner.

trek one cykel

Meanwhile, the rest of the core cast are mostly given compelling things to do in these first four: Saru (Doug Jones) continues his relationship with the Vulcan T'Rina (Tara Rosling); Tilly (Mary Wiseman) returns after taking part of last season off, and she’s back to her humorous Tilly ways after encountering some Andorian champagne in Episode 1; and Wilson Cruz gets to put a unique spin on Dr. Culber in Episode 3 (sorry, no spoilers!). Stamets (Anthony Rapp), meanwhile, is confronted with the shuttering of his entire livelihood – the spore drive program – after the events of last season, though the scripts haven’t quite given the actor a chance to fully dig in on that prospect yet.

Questions and Notes from the Q Continuum:

  • I still don’t understand why David Cronenberg is a recurring player on Star Trek. I just wish he showed up more often.
  • I had almost forgotten how fast Saru can run!
  • Yes, Tig Notaro’s Jett Reno pops back in to crack wise here or there.
  • Hey, the Saurian Linus is very present on the bridge this season – with dialogue and everything! Get ready to hear about his people’s mating habits.
  • The big question about Star Trek: Discovery’s final season, of course, is… how final will it be? We know Paramount+ has a Starfleet Academy series in the works. Will that be set in the 32nd century as well, as Tilly is already an instructor there? And who’s to say that Captain Burnham or the others can’t show up again in some future Trek?

Star Trek: Discovery starts its fifth and final season in fine fashion, setting up another season-long mystery but doing so with enough interesting character developments to avoid the pitfalls of that approach that have sometimes plagued the show in the past. Sonequa Martin-Green is as strong as ever as Captain Burnham, and these first four episodes deal directly with the evolution of her character over the years, an evolution that at one point might’ve been seen as a bug of inconsistent writing but is now framed as a feature of the character. Callum Keith Rennie’s Captain Rayner makes for an intriguing addition to the cast, and the show looks as amazing as it ever has. Through four episodes, the last voyage of the USS Discovery is on course to stick the landing.

Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 - Blue

Checkpoint fås i 3 modeller

Checkpoint SLR

Domane fås i 3 modeller

Star Trek Enterprise Reviews Are Too Harsh, According To One Fan

  • Star Trek: Enterprise was unique in going back in time, exploring humanity's early space exploits, and adding to the franchise's canon.
  • Despite mixed reviews, fans are defending the show and praising its writing, plus the newly fleshed-out portrayal of the Vulcans.
  • Broad criticism of the show stems from how it ended, including franchise fatigue, canon issues, and the overexposure of Star Trek content.

Star Trek: Enterprise has always had an unsteady place in the Star Trek franchise, and one new viewer called the harsh judgment the show receives into question with a querying post on social media addressing other fans.

Star Trek : Enterprise broke the franchise's mold by going back in time instead of ahead and telling the story of humanity’s earliest exploits in space after attaining the technology required for effective space travel. While Enterprise was unique and added many things to the franchise’s canon, including the story behind the name of Star Trek 's Enterprise , which served as the primary location for Star Trek: The Original Series , opinions on the show have been mixed despite starting strong.

Star Trek Fans Notice An Interesting Detail About Strange New Worlds Season 2's Phasers

Part of Star Trek: Enterprise 's mixed reception consists of fans defending the show and maintaining that several underrated Star Trek: Enterprise episodes don’t get a fair shake from other enjoyers of the franchise. One new defender of the show is Reddit user Vague-emu, who took to r/startrek to pose the question, “Why does ENT get such a bad rap?” Expressing their surprise at how much they enjoyed the show despite apprehension going into it due to the mixed reviews, the user clarified that they’re aware that the last few episodes are controversial. However, they feel that the writing is solid and the newly fleshed-out portrayal of the Vulcans was enjoyable, making them question the show’s poor reputation.

Several other denizens of the subreddit would proceed to weigh in on the issue, with many of the commenters agreeing on the same points of note, including the OP’s already-stated problems with how the series ended. Some of these widely held gripes include the sudden change in story focus brought on by the Temporal Cold War arc, the effort put into setting up the Original Series retroactively, and a host of issues with how the show treated established canon. However, most longtime fans in the replies echo the same conclusion: franchise fatigue. While modern Star Trek fans are worried about too many projects being released as Star Wars does, Star Trek committed this sin first around the '90s and early 2000s with multiple long-running series running into one another and movies of varying quality. This seems to be the broad consensus on why the show got such a poor reception despite its initial critical success.

These weren’t the only problems, as the writing also had issues, and even Star Trek: Enterprise star Jolene Blalock has slammed how her character T'Pol was written. Other commenters also mentioned some individual pet peeves like distaste for the original showrunner’s philosophy on the franchise, the Star Trek epitaph missing from the show’s original title for the first two seasons, the opening theme, and much more–but the core issues do seem to be the ones everyone agrees on. Coming in after years of night endless Star Trek content to capitalize on its previously unexpected success, Enterprise was quick to wear its welcome due to overexposure suffered by fans, making all the legitimate faults the show had all the more glaring and turning minor mishaps and inconsistencies into capital sins. With time to cleanse the pallet, many fans admit to enjoying the show more on rewatching.

While a fan-requested Star Trek: Picard spinoff project might’ve been canceled by Paramount , there’s still tons of Star Trek content to come, as the IP is one of Paramount's strongest and still quite rife with opportunities to expand and draw in new fans with more shows and movies in a similar vein to Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks . Hopefully, the creatives learn from past mistakes and pace the new content accordingly.

Star Trek Enterprise Reviews Are Too Harsh, According To One Fan

Screen Rant

Jonathan frakes is in star trek: discovery even if you don’t see riker.

No, Will Riker won't appear in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but Jonathan Frakes has been behind the camera as a director since Discovery season 1.

  • Jonathan Frakes has been a vital part of Star Trek: Discovery since season 1's finale.
  • Frakes transitioned to directing after playing Commander Will Riker, contributing to multiple Star Trek series and films, showcasing his talents behind the camera.
  • Riker won't appear in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but Frakes is directing Discovery's penultimate episode, which is the first half of the series' two-part finale.

Jonathan Frakes still plays a significant part in Star Trek: Discovery even though Captain William Riker does not make an appearance in Discovery season 5. Frakes first joined the Star Trek family as Commander Riker in 1987 when Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered. As the First Officer on the USS Enterprise-D under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Riker went on to become, in Picard's words: "the finest officer with whom I have ever served." Despite numerous offers of promotion to his own command, Riker chose to serve as Picard's First Officer for fifteen years.

After playing Cmmander Riker for two and a half years on TNG , Jonathan Frakes decided to give directing a try. Frakes directed the excellent season 3 episode "The Offspring," which focused on Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) and his attempt to create an android daughter. Frakes really took to directing, and went on to helm seven more episodes of TNG , as well as the feature films Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection . Frakes has also directed episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Star Trek: Voyager , Star Trek: Discovery , and Star Trek: Picard, as well as the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds crossover episode.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, which will be the show's final season, premieres on Thursday, April 4, 2024, on Paramount+.

10 Best Star Trek Episodes Directed By Jonathan Frakes

Star trek: discovery breaks a jonathan frakes riker record, jonathan frakes' riker has appeared in every concluded star trek series so far..

Since the end of Star Trek: The Next Generation , Will Riker has made an appearance in every concluded Star Trek series, but that streak will end with Star Trek: Discovery . In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 3, episode 9, "Defiant," Commander Riker pays a visit to space station Deep Space Nine. It's not long before Riker reveals himself to be Thomas Riker, a transporter clone created in TNG's "Second Chances," rather than William Riker. Thomas has joined the rebel group known as the Maquis and has been tasked with stealing the USS Defiant.

Jonathan Frakes appears briefly as Riker in Star Trek: Voyager season 2, episode 18, "Death Wish," when Q (John de Lancie) makes him appear as a witness at a trial for another member of the Q Continuum. In the controversial series finale of Star Trek: Enterprise , Commander Riker and Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) revisit the last mission of the Enterprise NX-01 on the holodeck. Captain Riker pops up in two episodes of Star Trek: Picard season 1, before making a more substantial return in Picard season 3, which sees the main TNG crew members reunite on the rebuilt USS Enterprise-D.

Jonathan Frakes also provides the voice for Captain Riker in three episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks, as well as three episodes of Star Trek: Very Short Treks .

Jonathan Frakes Is Part Of Star Trek: Discovery - But Not As Riker

Frakes has directed at least one episode in every season of discovery..

Although Star Trek: Discovery initially takes place long before Will Riker was even born, Jonathan Frakes has been a part of Discovery since the show's first season. He directed Discovery's shocking season 1 finale , "Despite Yourself," which concluded Discovery season 1's brutal Klingon War storyline. According to Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green, not only is Frakes one of the cast's favorite directors, but he also "took [them] under his wing" when Discovery began receiving early hate from Trek fans. After directing one episode in Discovery season 1, Frakes returned for more episodes in later seasons.

Even with his roles in front of and behind the camera in Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks , and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Jonathan Frakes considered Star Trek: Discovery his "home" show.

With the introduction of Anson's Mount's Captain Christopher Pike and Ethan Peck's Spock, Star Trek: Discovery season 2 took the show in a new (and more well-received) direction. Frakes directed two of the season's best episodes in Discovery season 2, episode 2, "New Eden," and episode 9, "Project Daedalus." At the end of Discovery season 2, the titular ship flew over 900 years into the future, removing any constraints the show had to existing Star Trek canon. Jonathan Frakes remained very much a part of Discovery , directing three episodes in season 3 and one in season 4.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Review - Thrilling Star Trek Season Is Stretched To Its Breaking Point

Jonathan frakes is directing part 1 of star trek: discovery’s series finale, frakes remains one of discovery's biggest supporters..

The upcoming Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will be the show's last, and Jonathan Frakes returned one last time to helm the show's penultimate episode. When Frakes was directing Discovery season 5, episode 9, “Lagrange Point," which is part one of a two-part finale, he didn't know that season 5 would be Discovery's final season . Not much has been revealed about the storyline of Discovery season 5, but the trailers that have been released so far highlight the fun and fast-paced action sequences, as well as the camaraderie of the characters.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will find Captain Michael Burnham and her crew searching for a mysterious and powerful artifact in a plot that Frakes likens to Indiana Jones . Discovery has faced its fair share of ups and downs throughout its four seasons so far, but modern Star Trek would not be where it is without Captain Burnham and her crew. When Star Trek: Discovery premiered in 2017, it ushered in a new era for the franchise, providing the setup for Strange New Worlds and proving that Star Trek still has many stories left to tell.

Star Trek: Discovery's Michael Burnham: 5 Times The Starfleet Captain Was Inspiring

She's one of the best to ever do it.

Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery is headed into the final season, but the legacy of its characters will live on. Much of that is because of its strong lead protagonist played by Sonequa Martin-Green, the unflappable Michael Burnham. From her unfortunate beginnings in the series to her evolution into Starfleet Captain of the future, Burnham has found ways to inspire her crew and viewers in many different ways.

Michael Burnham is an inspiration, and if you don't believe that, you clearly haven't been watching. As we prepare to stream Discovery 's final season with our Paramount+ subscriptions , Womens' History Month feels like the ideal time to explore the character and some of her best moments as a member of Starfleet. Of course, nothing will be featured from Season 5 just yet, though anyone curious can check out my spoiler-free review on the first four episodes .

Surviving Her Escape From The Brig

Michael Burnham has had some close calls in her Starfleet career, but I don't think any of them measure up to how she narrowly escaped dying when the USS Shenzhou was split due to a Klingon attack. For those who don't remember, Michael was in the brig during the attack, having been put there for mutiny after overriding Starfleet orders and attacking the Klingon ship.

With only a force field separating her from the cold vacuum of space, Burnham is in a tight spot. After a brief pep talk with Sarek (via mind meld and use of katra), Burnham was able to convince an officer to open a hole in the force field, which propelled her to an adjacent compartment and got her to safety. It was a bold gambit, but the kind of inspirational move that makes you love her and her drive.

Traveling Alone To The Future As The Red Angel

Traveling deep into the future was a perilous journey with plenty of unknowns, and I'd like to think if the literal fate of the universe wasn't at stake, no one on Discovery would've signed on for it. Doing it in a ship was wild enough, but what about traveling to the future in nothing but a time-travel suit? That just sounds bonkers, but Michael didn't think twice about it.

To take it further, how horrifying must it have been to arrive on the other side and not have the rest of the crew right behind in the ship? A year doesn't sound like a long time, but that's quite a lot to go in a new time period, not knowing exactly when everyone you knew before will emerge on the other side. The upside is that it gave her some quality time with Cleveland Booker, whom we will see reunite with Michael in the final season .

Turning Emperor Georgiou Into One Of The Heroes

Terran Emperor Georgiou was trapped in the prime timeline and, with little ability to return, was forced to assume the identity of her dead counterpart, Starfleet Captain Phillipa Georgiou. Initially, she seemed to be more or less committed to being the person she was in the Mirror Universe, yet slowly, but surely, Michael Burnham changed her.

She did have an advantage in that Georgiou also had a soft spot for the Terran Michael. Even so, the two Michaels were incredibly different, and it's safe to say that the more time Georgiou watched Michael be better, she also worked to be a better person. Or at least, as good as a Terran raised in violence and responsible for an untold number of deaths can be. We'll see how well her will to do good sticks in the upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 movie .

Convincing The Federation Not To Attack The DMA

Always count on a Starfleet captain when it comes to inspiring speeches, but it's truly impressive what Michael pulled off in Discovery Season 4. Imagine finding the source of a threat that's indiscriminately destroying entire planets, and better yet, there's a scientist capable of developing the exact weapon that could severely harm that species, if not eradicate them.

In our real life, modern times, you'd have to think our world leaders would've unanimously voted to attack without question. The new Federation, which was still getting its legs, definitely had the temptation to do the same. It took an impassioned speech from Michael Burnham to swing the majority of votes to attempt to contact the species and get an explanation behind why this was happening, though her efforts were thwarted when Book and Ruon Tarka tried to use the weapon anyway.

Gaining Saru's Respect And Friendship

The friendship Saru and Michael have toward the end of Star Trek: Discovery is not even close to that at the beginning of the series. Saru has absolute disdain for Michael due to her actions on the Shenzhou , and it didn't seem like anything she could do would ever be able to win his trust back. In his defense, Michael was the first person in Starfleet history to be charged with mutiny, so it's not like he didn't have valid reasons to distrust her.

Doug Jones shared his honest thoughts about Discovery 's final scene.

As the seasons went on, Saru's relationship with Michael grew, and they became friends. He trusted her enough by Season 3 to make her his Number One, and by the end of the season, he trusted his friend to take over the captaincy of Discovery . He was, to use the word of the feature again, "inspired" by Michael's journey and all he'd been through with her over the years. Saru is one of Star Trek 's best characters , so I'm inclined to believe that if you can inspire him to have faith in you after all that, you're an inspiring leader overall.

Is Star Trek: Discovery 's Michael Burnham the only inspiring woman of the franchise? Absolutely not. Star Trek, as a whole, is loaded with strong women, and you'll find far more of them by watching any of the shows. With that said, there have only been two female characters who've led a Trek series, and I'd say Michael Burnham is just as inspiring as Janeway, if not a little more.

Star Trek: Discovery 's final season begins on Paramount+ on Thursday, April 4th. Be prepared for an epic adventure and ten more episodes with the inspiring Michael Burnham, and hopefully, an ending that will set the stage for more adventures for the crew I hope we see in upcoming Star Trek shows .

'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 5 Review: One Hell of a Final Ride

Michael Burnham takes her crew on one last spectacular adventure in 'Star Trek: Discovery's fifth and final season.

The Big Picture

  • Star Trek: Discovery 's mystery in Season 5 is more lighthearted than Season 4 while still maintaining the series' high stakes.
  • Sonequa Martin-Green shines in her role as Michael Burnham, one of Starfleet's best captains.
  • Season 5 is well-paced and structured, with each episode offering a satisfying piece of the full puzzle.

Let's fly, one last time. The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery is right around the corner , with Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) gearing up to take us on the adventure of a lifetime. Discovery premiered back in 2017 and kicked off the current Star Trek renaissance that has seen six new shows brought to life along with a spin-off movie starring Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh . While it's bittersweet to see Discovery come to an end, showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise have crafted one hell of a ride for the show's final run.

Where Season 4 saw Michael and the crew of the Discovery stitching the federation back together in the wake of a devastating disaster, Season 5 sets up a more light-hearted adventure in the style of an Indiana Jones movie . Despite not knowing Season 5 would be the show's last, the cast and crew behind the series have set up a story worthy of the legacy of Discovery that stays true to the very best of Star Trek. The mystery laid out in the first four episodes of Season 5 stitches the franchise together in a creation myth that tangles Burnham and her crew with destiny itself.

What Is 'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 5 About?

One of Discovery 's biggest strengths is telling a captivating season-long, self-contained story, and it looks like the same stands true for Season 5. The premiere episode sends Michael and her crew on a mission that will bring them face-to-face with some of the most powerful forces in the galaxy. In a race against time, the crew of the Discovery enters a veritable treasure hunt for one of the franchise's greatest mysteries. Legendary filmmaker David Cronenberg returns as Doctor Kovich and acts as the architect for the mission that will likely span the entirety of the show's final episodes. Kovich is as enigmatic as always and Cronenberg's chemistry with Martin-Green is filled with the type of starry-eyed wonder that makes Star Trek so compelling.

In addition to the return of Cronenberg, Season 5 also introduces a few enemies and reluctant allies in the form of Eve Harlow ( The 100 ), Elias Toufexis , and Callum Keith Rennie ( Battlestar Galactica ). Harlow and Toufexis play Moll and L'ak, respectively, with the former both hardened and bold, shaped by a hard life in a challenging universe but knowing exactly how to get what she wants. L'ak is almost blindly devoted to her and that devotion makes him extremely dangerous. Not only are they formidable antagonists, but the duo is also set up as an interesting narrative foil to the relationship between Book ( David Ajala ) and Burnham, which is going through a rough patch following their fallout in Season 4.

While Burnham leads her crew on a planet-hopping scavenger hunt that will have audiences eagerly attempting to crack the riddles within each episode, she also has to deal with another rough-around-the-edges Starfleet captain. Rennie plays Captain Rayner, a war-weary leader with a single-minded focus that has Burnham calling upon 900 years' worth of patience. While they share the same goal, their command styles (and their personalities) couldn't be more different. But part of Star Trek's ethos is learning to look beyond those differences and make connections. Connecting with Rayner certainly won't be easy, but if the early episodes are any indication, it will be worth it in the end.

With Episodes 1-4 written by Michelle Paradise , Alan McElroy , Kyle Jarrow & Lauren Wilkinson , and Sean Cochran Season 5 is remarkably structured. Each episode adds another piece of the overarching puzzle while also providing some stellar character work and thematic connections worthy of a final season. While there are a lot of characters to catch up with, and several narrative threads to keep track of, Discovery Season 5 is well-paced. Each storyline gets the breathing room it needs without making the show feel unbalanced or creating any lulls in the less action-packed sequences.

'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 5 Keeps the Crew at the Heart of the Story

The driving force behind Discovery — and honestly, every Star Trek series — always comes back to the characters. Season 5 keeps Burnham and her crew at the heart of the story , allowing their complex relationships to move the narrative forward in an easy give-and-take. Martin-Green is phenomenal as always, imbuing Burnham with a level of empathy and grace that makes her one of the franchise's very best captains. Not only does Burnham show that it's possible to lead from the heart, but that's exactly what makes her so good . In the new episodes, we'll find out exactly how far Burnham has come since the show's inception as she comes face to face with some of the skeletons in her closet.

Though Season 4 saw Book and Burnham split up after the events with the DMA and Species 10-C, the spark between them is still there. Ajala and Martin-Green's chemistry is electric , and their characters have the kind of connection reminiscent of TNG 's Will Riker ( Jonathan Frakes ) and Deanna Troi ( Marina Sirtis ). Book and Burnham actually working through their issues and digging into the complexities of loving someone who's hurt you feels like a real treat, especially for TNG fans who longed for more depth in that show's episodic narrative.

Book and Burnham aren't the only relationship getting the spotlight in Season 5, either . The romance that sparked between Saru ( Doug Jones ) and T'Rina ( Tara Rosling ) in Season 4 is one of the show's sweet spots and the unconventional alien couple takes some big steps forward in the first four episodes. Meanwhile, love certainly plays a role in the intensity between Moll and L'ak, and Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ) also dabbles slightly in a little rom-com moment with a fellow teacher from Starfleet Academy. If the upcoming Academy-set series is confirmed as a Discovery spin-off, it would be lovely to see this little connection carry over.

The little family unit established between Stamets ( Anthony Rapp ) and Culber ( Wilson Cruz ) and their baby gays, Adira ( Blu del Barrio ) and Grey ( Ian Alexander ), is still present, but time apart has shifted things for the younger couple. While the steps they take make total sense within the narrative of Discovery , it does play into the apparent sanitization of queer relationships within the Star Trek franchise . The latest seasons of Picard and Lower Decks saw previously established queer relationships end, and to see Discovery follow suit (to a degree) is disheartening, as a queer viewer — especially when Star Trek's most comparable counterpart, Doctor Who, is openly embracing the community . We'll have to wait for the full season to play out to know the endgame of these relationships, so hopefully, not all is lost for LGBTQ+ romance in the 32nd century. Tig Notaro 's Jett Reno also makes a return, and Cruz, in particular, gets to flex his acting skills with a very sci-fi twist.

Another drawback of the final season is that it's unlikely we'll ever get the full backstories of the Discovery's bridge crew , like Owo ( Oyin Oladejo ), Rhys ( Patrick Kwok-Choon ), and Detmer ( Emily Coutts ). These characters have been part of the show since it began, but we know little about their lives outside their roles as Starfleet officers. That said, Burnham does connect with these crew members in an episode that is both incredibly Star Trek and one of the series' best.

How Does 'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 5 Hold Up as the End of a Series?

Despite not being planned as the show's final installment when production began on Season 5, it seems to take up the mantle remarkably well. Discovery took a bold turn within the franchise by introducing a serialized narrative when it first premiered, despite all previous series being episodic. That's worked beautifully in Discovery 's favor, as each season has delivered a satisfying story that keeps audiences consistently engaged across all 10 episodes.

On top of a compelling treasure hunt-style story and its complex characters, Discovery Season 5 also delivers some incredible action sequences and truly breathtaking visuals. The scale of the series feels massive in its final episodes, and viewers will no doubt want to rewatch each episode just to take in the beauty of it all. Without giving anything away, the season's plot is tied to a mystery that bridges multiple parts of the franchise together in a way that will have even the most niche Star Trek fan excited. Season 5 appears to be heading towards a very natural full-circle moment for the series — and if Starfleet Academy is confirmed as a spin-off for Discovery , saying goodbye to this chapter might just get a little bit easier.

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 sets up a thrilling adventure while keeping the characters at the heart of the story.

  • The show's mystery, while full of high stakes, is more light-hearted than Season 4.
  • Sonequa Martin-Green proves once again why Michael Burnham is one of the best captains in Starfleet.
  • Season 5 is well-paced and well-structured, with each episode offering a satisfying piece of the puzzle.
  • Season 5 delivers breathtaking visuals and heart-pounding action sequences.
  • The characters and their relationships drive the plot forward naturally.
  • With only 10 episodes remaining, some characters won't get their time in the spotlight.
  • Star Trek as a whole appears to be pulling back on LGBTQ+ relationships.

Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery premieres on April 4, and you can catch up with the first four seasons on Paramount+ right now.

One Star Trek Episode Almost Featured An Unthinkable Kirk & McCoy Romance

Kirk and McCoy composite image

One of the franchise's campiest offerings, the Season 3 "Star Trek: The Original Series" episode "The Way to Eden" has aged pretty terribly — at least aesthetically speaking. The story finds the Enterprise crew with their hands full after rescuing a group of space hippies that includes one of Chekov's old flames from his Starfleet days. But before Chekov got his girl, the originally Bones-centric story was drastically changed to omit a questionable romance between Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and the daughter of his friend and ship's doctor, Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley).

Like all good iconic franchises, the Star Trek universe is loaded with romances of varying quality from Imzadis William Riker and Deanna Troi  to the cringe-inducing Keslex (Kes and Neelix). There are epic canon romances like the heartbreaking unrequited love Chapel feels for Spock in "Star Trek: The Original Series." There are those romances that might have been but never were — at least in the Prime universe — like Worf and Troi and the many love pretzels that emerge in the unquenchably thirsty mirror universe. And that's to say nothing of the fanfic ships Trekkies have dreamed up over the decades like Garashir (Bashir and Garak) or the ship to end all ships: Spirk (Spock and Kirk).

Because the creativity of Trekkies seems to know no bounds, even the briny Enterprise doctor Bones (DeForest Kelley) has his share of fanfiction pairings — most notably, Spones (Spock and McCoy), Sybones (Sybok and McCoy), and McKirk (Bones and Kirk). While the good doctor never had the chance to play doctor with his good buddy and boss Jim in the franchise, an alternate version of McKirk very nearly came to fruition between Captain Kirk and McCoy's daughter, Joanna, in the episode "The Way to Eden."

Joanna was McCoy's estranged space hippie daughter

According to D.C. Fontana's account in Paula M. Block's "Star Trek: The Original Series 365," "The Way to Eden" underwent a handful of changes during development. Instead of Chekov's girlfriend, the young lady was meant to be Bones' 21-year-old daughter, Joanna, whom the writer envisioned as played by Nancy Sinatra or Bobbie Gentry. In the original plot, Dr. McCoy would have learned the hard way that instead of studying at nursing school, she's bumming around with the space Mansons. Far from a happy reunion, Joanna would harbor serious resentment over the fact that her father had abandoned her and her mother, only seeing his daughter thrice in her lifetime.

As if that wasn't enough to overload her dad's tricorder, Joanna would have been pretty taken with Kirk, who everyone knows rarely turns down an intergalactic booty call. Things get even more toxic when Bones tells Kirk his daughter is a witch, just like her old lady. Despite their problems, father and daughter would have eventually come to an understanding by the end of the episode.

Joanna came from Bones' canonical back story

D.C. Fontana didn't pull the story out of nowhere. Originally conceived as part of a conversation between the writer and DeForest Kelley after the show's first season, the character was soon added to the first official Star Trek book, written by Stephen E. Whitfield and published in 1968 — a year before "The Way to Eden" aired. Incorporated throughout the book are quotations from Gene Roddenberry, denoted with all caps. As the show's first fan guide, it includes many additional details that Roddenberry considered canon but had not yet made it into episodes.

Included in the chapter titled "Chief Medical Officer" is a lengthy discussion of Dr. "Bones" McCoy. Describing Bones as a 45-year-old Georgia native and a Southern gentleman, Whitfield explains that Bones' single status is partly because he never completely got over a bad breakup.

In a Roddenberry-penned paragraph, the Star Trek creator clearly states that he plans to include a future episode dedicated to McCoy's daughter, Joanna. The passage reads, "She will be a lovely girl, and Captain Kirk, of course, is going to be involved with her." The original plans imagined Bones discovering he is a father during the series, and that revelation was meant to profoundly change the nature of his relationship with Kirk, leading to a more paternal — and occasionally angry — dynamic.

How McKirk got canceled

Despite D.C. Fontana's faithful adherence to Gene Roddenberry's plan and much to the writer's chagrin, poor Joanna would get retconned — at least partially — because a producer knew less about Star Trek than she did. When the writer turned in her script, the producer nixed the Joanna story, arguing that as Kirk's contemporary, Bones would not be old enough to have a 21-year-old daughter (even though DeForest Kelley was in his late 40s at the time). Although incensed that the producer didn't even know the canon, Fontana complied with the suggested changes, replacing Joanna with Chekov's old Starfleet girlfriend, Irina.

Fortunately, this wouldn't be the end of Joanna, who was eventually recognized throughout the franchise. In the 1983 Pocket TOS novel "Star Trek II: Biographies," the character's full name is listed as Joanna Lee McCoy, with her story further developed throughout other novelizations. The junior McCoy finishes her education, ultimately working as a nurse on the Verillian homeworld and in Centaurus' capital city. She has a son named Conner, later becoming a grandmother and great-grandmother. Unlike Fontana's original story, Joanna has a healthier relationship with her father, with "The Star Trek Concordance" confirming that they maintain regular correspondence despite their busy work schedules.

Since this version of Joanna McCoy never joins a troupe of space Burning Man rejects, we can only hope this means she stays away from the 23rd century's most notorious, and lovable, gigolo, Captain James T. Kirk.
