Carnival Theme Nights 2024: Schedule for Every Ship!

Carnival cruise theme nights

Carnival offers some of the most entertaining themed nights and parties at sea .

Since most theme nights require specific attire , many passengers like to know the schedule in advance.

Therefore, I’ve made this article with a description of them and the complete schedule for all ships for 2024 .

Table of Contents

’70s ’80s or ’90s Night

On almost every Carnival Cruise there’s a decade-themed night that celebrates the music, culture, and fashion of the ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s .

You can expect to hear hit songs from each era and have fun while dancing to them.

What to wear? It depends on the decade but generally:

For the ’70s : bell-bottom jeans, psychedelic or floral shirts and dresses, platform shoes. Think disco glam with lots of sparkles.

For the ’80s : bright neon shirts or skirts, off-the-shoulder tops, parachute pants, bandanas, leg warmers, and headbands.

On many ships the the ’80s night is called ’80s Rock n Glow Night, remember to bring with you some neon pieces of clothing.

For the ’90s : grunge or hip-hop-inspired looks with baggy jeans, plaid mini skirts, band T-shirts, flannel shirts, and snapback caps.

  • White Night

White Night is one of the most famous on Carnival ships, it can be found on almost every ship and it is very easy to dress up in theme.

My advice is: open your closet and pick every white piece of clothing that you have , it’s as simple as that.

For its total white look, a man can wear white dress shirts, pants, and shoes. For a more chic version, a white blazer over a light-colored shirt can also work well.

Women can opt for white dresses, ranging from elegant gowns to casual summer dresses. For the accessories pearl jewelry and white clutches are just perfect.

Elegant Night

One of the cruise’s highlights, Elegant Night invites guests to dress in their most formal attire. I have to say that, as time goes by, formal nights become less and less popular.

I personally still like to dress up for a few evenings on a cruise. There is no need to overdo it!

Men can wear tuxedos or dark suits , with ties or bow ties if they like it.

Women can wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses , paired with shiny jewels and evening clutches.

  • Island Night

On some cruises, there can be an Island Night . The idea is to capture the spirit of tropical heavens with Caribbean music, island-inspired cocktails, and activities that celebrate beach life.

The dress code for all includes bright floral shirts or dresses featuring palm leaf, floral, or other bright prints .

It’s basically the Carnival version of the Caribbean Night that you can find among the Royal Caribbean Theme Nights 2024 .

  • Motown Party

The Motown Party it’s a night dedicated to the sounds of Motown, with soulful music, classic hits, and an atmosphere that will bring you back to the golden age of rhythm and blues.

As far as I know, there’s no actual dress code for this party. To stay on topic you can opt for a ’50s or ’60s outfit .

Vintage suits, fedoras, and polished dress shoes for men. A-line dresses, sequined tops, and flared skirts for women.

Will all the party’s listed happen on every cruise? Do I need to bring outfits for all then find out when I board which ones they will have or is there a way to find out beforehand so I don’t overpack?

Hello Selena, unfortunately the parties can change very often during the year so there is never 100% certainty about which ones there will be. My advice is to bring clothes that can adapt well to the different parties, but that you can also wear normally during your cruise.

What is serenity night on the magic?

as far as I know it should be a deck party at serenity, which is an adults-only area for guests ages 21 and over.

Best of all, Carnival’s friendly and attentive staff ensures that guests’ needs are met throughout their journey. Exceptional service is a hallmark of the Carnival experience, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for every traveler.

So, whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor, Carnival Cruises offers an incredible vacation that will leave you with lasting memories.

Understanding Formal Nights

Formal Nights are one of the most anticipated events on a Carnival cruise. They provide guests with the opportunity to dress up in their finest attire and partake in an evening of elegance and grandeur.

During Formal Nights, the ambiance onboard the ship is transformed into a glamorous affair. The main dining rooms, bars, lounges, and theater are adorned with beautiful decorations, and the ship’s crew members are dressed in their formal uniforms, adding to the air of sophistication.

Attending Formal Nights is optional, but it’s a wonderful chance to go all out and indulge in a glamorous experience. For those who choose to participate, it’s a chance to don their elegant evening gowns, tuxedos, suits, or cocktail dresses and make a statement.

Formal Nights typically feature a special menu in the main dining rooms, offering gourmet dishes and exquisite culinary creations. Guests can enjoy a delectable multi-course meal while being serenaded by live music or even enjoy a dancing performance.

After dinner, the evening’s entertainment often includes Broadway-style shows, live bands, or themed parties. It’s the perfect time to socialize, dance the night away, or capture beautiful photos with loved ones in their stunning outfits.

It’s important to note that while Formal Nights are elegant affairs, Carnival also provides options for those who prefer a more relaxed dress code. The Lido Deck and other casual dining areas provide a more laid-back atmosphere during these evenings, allowing guests to still enjoy a delicious meal without the formal dress requirements.

Now that we understand the essence of Formal Nights, let’s explore when they typically occur during a 5-day Carnival cruise.

Schedule of Formal Nights on a 5-Day Carnival Cruise

Formal Nights on a 5-day Carnival cruise are usually scheduled on one or two evenings, allowing guests ample opportunity to dress up and enjoy the festivities. The specific nights for Formal Night can vary depending on the itinerary and cruise ship, so it’s always best to check your cruise itinerary or consult with the onboard staff for the exact schedule. However, as a general guideline, here is an example of a typical schedule for a 5-day Carnival cruise:

  • First Night: The first night of the cruise is often a more casual affair. After embarking and settling into your stateroom, guests can enjoy a relaxed dinner and explore the ship’s amenities. This is a great chance to familiarize yourself with the ship and plan your activities for the next few days.
  • Second Night: The second night is usually designated as the first Formal Night. It’s a chance for guests to dress up and make a stylish entrance into the main dining room. The crew takes great care to ensure the ambiance is elegant and the atmosphere is filled with excitement and anticipation. After dinner, guests can immerse themselves in the evening’s entertainment or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beautiful decks.
  • Third Night: On a 5-day Carnival cruise, the third night is often considered a more casual evening. While not a designated Formal Night, guests can still opt to dress up or choose a more relaxed attire. This night offers flexibility for guests to enjoy the various onboard activities, from live shows to comedy performances and late-night parties.
  • Fourth Night: The fourth night is typically the second and final Formal Night of the cruise. This evening allows guests a second opportunity to showcase their glamorous outfits and indulge in an exquisite dining experience. After dinner, guests can join in on the festive celebrations happening across the ship, including themed parties and live music performances.
  • Last Night: The final night of the cruise is a chance to reflect on the incredible experiences and make lasting memories. While not a designated Formal Night, guests can still choose to dress up or opt for a more casual attire. It’s a time to savor the remaining moments onboard and bid farewell to newfound friends and unforgettable adventures.

Remember, exact scheduling and Formal Night designations may vary, so it’s always best to consult your itinerary once onboard to ensure you don’t miss these special occasions.

Now that we’re familiar with the schedule of Formal Nights, let’s explore some tips to make the most of these glamorous evenings on your Carnival cruise.

Tips for Formal Nights on a Carnival Cruise

Formal Nights on a Carnival cruise are a chance to immerse yourself in elegance and create unforgettable memories. Here are some tips to help you make the most of these special evenings:

  • Plan your outfits in advance: Before your cruise, take some time to plan your Formal Night attire. Ladies can opt for elegant evening gowns or cocktail dresses, while men can choose between tuxedos, suits, or dress shirts with ties. Selecting your outfits in advance will ensure you have everything you need and avoid any last-minute wardrobe stress.
  • Utilize the ship’s resources: If you need assistance with formal wear or accessories, Carnival cruise ships often have onboard shops that offer rentals or sales of formal attire. Additionally, many ships have professional photographers available to capture stunning photos of you and your loved ones all dressed up.
  • Take advantage of pre-cruise offers: On Carnival’s website, you may find information about any pre-cruise offers for formal attire rentals or professional photo packages. Taking advantage of these offers can save you time and money when it comes to preparing for Formal Night.
  • Pack appropriately: Make sure to pack your formal attire carefully to avoid any wrinkles. Consider bringing a garment bag or using the ship’s laundry and pressing services to ensure your clothes look their best for Formal Night.
  • Accessorize for the occasion: Complete your formal look with the right accessories. Ladies can add statement jewelry, a clutch or evening bag, and elegant shoes. Gentlemen can choose a matching tie and pocket square, cufflinks, and polished shoes to complement their attire.
  • Don’t forget about grooming: Take the time to style your hair, apply your makeup, and groom yourself in a way that enhances your overall appearance. This attention to detail will elevate your formal look and make you feel even more confident and ready to shine.
  • Capture the moment: Formal Nights provide a fantastic opportunity to capture beautiful photos. Take advantage of the ship’s designated photo areas or arrange for a professional photoshoot on board. These photos will be a cherished keepsake from your cruise.
  • Enjoy the dining experience: On Formal Nights, the main dining rooms offer special menus with gourmet selections. Take your time to savor each course and enjoy the exquisite cuisine. Remember to make reservations in advance to secure your preferred dining time.
  • Participate in the festivities: After dinner, immerse yourself in the onboard entertainment. Attend a Broadway-style show, enjoy live music or dancing, or join in on the themed parties happening around the ship. These activities are designed to ensure a night filled with excitement and celebration.

38 Must-Do Things on a Carnival Cruise Ship

Wondering what all you can do on your Carnival cruise?

Think of a cruise and you likely envision exotic ports, hitting the beach, or splashing in the clear blue water of the Caribbean.

The truth is, however, the vast majority of your time on a cruise is actually spent on the ship . Consider that on a 7-day cruise, you might have three ports of call. Each of those port days consists of about eight hours docked. In other words, of the 160+ hours spent on a week-long cruise, only about 24 hours would be spent on shore .

That means cruise lines need to ensure there is plenty for passengers to do on their trip. Carnival is among the leading cruise lines when it comes to what you can do while you sail on your vacation.

Below we’ve rounded up nearly 40 ideas of things you can do on a Carnival cruise ship , and it’s just a start. What’s available may vary depending on which ship you sail, but overall, this is a great primer to what you can do on your vacation.

Grab a Bite From Guy’s Burger Joint

Guy's Burger Joint on Carnival

If you’re sailing on Carnival, you might have heard about Guy’s Burger Joint . It’s a venture with Guy Fieri, the famous chef and TV host. On Carnival ships there is a Guy’s (usually poolside) serving fresh burgers and fries… and it’s completely free.

Why are they such a big deal? Instead of some dried out burger sitting under a heat lamp, Guy’s offers up fresh food that’s tasty… and the price can’t be beat. Grab one, and you’re likely to get hooked immediately.

One thing to know is that the spot serves up burgers with limited hours — usually noon to 6 p.m. Also know that lines can be pretty long when it first opens up.

Start Your Morning With a Breakfast Burrito at BlueIguana

Typically on the other side of the ship’s pool deck from Guy’s Burger Joint is the BlueIguana Cantina, which serves up Mexican food. You can stop for lunch and grab tacos or a burrito that’s fresh, fast, and easy.

But many people don’t realize that the quick-eatery also serves up breakfast tacos and burritos. Stop by and get some eggs and bacon wrapped in a warm tortilla instead of munching on pancakes and cereal in the buffet.

Play in the Waterpark and Waterslides

Carnival waterslide

If relaxing isn’t your thing (or more likely you have kids!), then you can spend some time checking out the waterslides and waterpark on the ship’s pool deck. What’s offered will vary depending on the ship, but the newest ships feature winding slides and water features to help cool off and have a thrill. They are designed for the kiddos, but trust us, it’s fun for adults too.

Get that Golden Tan on the Pool Deck

There’s likely no activity more popular on a cruise than working on your tan. On days at sea you’ll see seemingly everyone on the ship getting some sun. If you want to be in the middle of the action, then head to the pool area where you’ll find the most people.

Those wanting somewhere a little less busy can try the Serenity area (adults only) or try sunny spots usually found at the back of the ship. One thing — the sun is a whole lot stronger at lower latitudes. Don’t stay out without sunscreen for too long or you can quickly burn.

Watch a Movie Poolside, Under the Stars

Movie screen overlooking pool

If you’re looking for a unique way to spend an evening at sea, what about hanging out by (or in) the pool, watching a movie on the big screen? In the evenings new release movies are shown on the large video board that towers over the pool. You can hang out and relax under stars, taking in a flick in one of the most perfect settings imaginable. Hang in the pool, hot tub, or lounger and enjoy the show.

Hit the Arcade (No Quarters Required)

Each ship will have an arcade filled with all sorts of games from air hockey to racing to shoot ’em ups. Head down with the kids and play some games. You don’t need to worry about quarters. You simply slide your key card at the machine you want to play and the charge is put on your onboard account. For the best deal, wait until they offer half-priced games during the “Power Hour.”

If you have kids, they will likely spend more time here than you can imagine!

Visit the Shops for Jewelry or Souvenirs

Shopping is big business on a cruise, and Carnival is no different. There are a number of stores on ships, including places where you can get everything from a fancy watch to a beautiful bracelet to a designer handbag. Not looking for anything too expensive? There are also souvenir shops on the ship where you can find practically anything you want adorned with the ship’s picture or name.

Have a Drink and a Sing-a-Long at the Piano Bar

You may not be the karaoke type to stand in front of a big crowd and belt out a hit, but who doesn’t like singing along with a group to the classics? On many Carnival ships there is a bar/nightclub called Piano Bar 88. Have a drink of two and enjoy having some of the best music hits ever made played — and sang along to — in the company of dozens of your closest friends.

Watch the Game at SkyBox While Enjoying a Brew

Skybox sports bar on Carnival

The cabin television sets don’t have a lot of options when it comes to watching sports. So if you want to watch the game, then you’re going to need to visit the casino, or the SkyBox Sports Bar. SkyBox offers a sports-themed atmosphere, complete with several TV sets showing the action. You can sit, watch the game and enjoy a beer (or other libation) with other sports fans. Another popular spot to watch sports is in the ship’s casino.

Have a Fancy Cocktail from a “Mixologist” at Alchemy Bar

Any bar on the ship can get you a beer or a margarita. But what about a “spicy chipotle pineapple martini” or a “curative peach cosmopolitan”? If drinks that are a little out of the ordinary appeal to you, then the Alchemy Bar might be right up your alley. The bar is staffed by “mixologists” who put new spins on beverages. The bar is available on many ships, but be prepared to spend a little more than usual for the unique mixtures.

Try Your Luck in the Casino

Carnival casino

We’ll be the first to say that the payouts in a cruise casino aren’t that great . If you really want the best place to play, stick to land-based casinos where you can (sometimes) find better payouts. But gambling on a cruise is still a lot of fun and offers low limits for smaller players. In addition, there are also a number of unique games in cruise casinos that you won’t find on land like “coin-pusher” machines. The casino isn’t open when in port, but once in international waters you can play.

Stock Up on Duty-Free Items

Duty-free shopping is big business on cruise ship (and in ports). The laws allow them to sell goods without taxes or duty, which means they can be cheaper than you’ll find back home. The popular items include things like alcohol, cigarettes, and jewelry/watches. Just know that there are limits on what you can bring home before you have to pay fees to the government when you disembark at the end of the trip. As well, the items you buy will be held for you until the end of the cruise.

Get a Pizza… 24 Hours a Day

Carnival’s pizza parlor is the Pizzeria Del Capitano (known as Pizza Pirate on some ships). It serves up handmade pies that are made fresh around the clock. There are only a few types of pie served (pepperoni, margherita, cheese, and a couple more), but they are absolutely delicious. Best of all, the pizza is free. In fact, you can even have it delivered to you on some ships, although a small charge applies if you do that.

Dance Salsa at the Havana Bar

Havana Bar is one of the favorite hangouts on Carnival ships. The Cuban-themed bar has one part that is a cozy spot to share a drink while the other part features a large dance floor. In the evenings there are bands that play lively music that you can use to practice your salsa moves. It you want to have a fun Caribbean night… while sailing in the Caribbean, then it can’t be beat.

Play a Round of Putt-Putt or Ping-Pong

If you have kids… or you are just a kid at heart… one of the fun things to do on any large cruise ship is to play the games. Ships have a putt-putt mini-golf course that adults and kids will find entertaining (the wind on a ship makes it challenging). As well, ping-pong is also a favorite with the cruise lines even holding tournaments so you can challenge your fellow passengers. Other games like foosball and more are also available.

Tackle Your Fear of Heights on the Ropes Course

Are you scared of heights? Or maybe you just like the thrill of them? Either way, ropes courses on Carnival ships will give you some excitement. Strap in and tackle the challenging walkways that soar above the deck below, with fantastic views of the water. Don’t worry, you’re well secured so there’s no risk of falling. Even so, it’s still a challenge to complete.

Get a Workout With a Great View

Not many people want to go on a cruise to exercise, but it’s a great way to feel better about eating that entire steak and lobster the night before. As an added bonus, the gym is usually in an enviable location, with floor-to-ceiling windows that give gorgeous ocean views while you jog on the treadmill.

Most gyms are stocked rather well, with plenty of machines and space for anyone interested in getting a workout done. These aren’t your small, dark gyms like you might find in a hotel.

Play a Card Game or Dominos

Ships sometimes have game rooms that are perfect for spending some time playing a game with your friends or family. Or you can just find a table somewhere around the ship to play. We’d suggest bringing your favorite games from home (a pack of cards or some dice will do just fine in a pinch) as sometimes the ship doesn’t have any games in stock. Still, if you want a break from the heat and humidity, it’s a great option to spend some time with your travel partners and even make some new friends on the ship.

Let the Kids Have Their Own Time and Independence

We’re in no way advocating that you let your children run wild across the ship. If your kids aren’t responsible or mature enough to be on their own, then keep an eye on them. That said, cruise ships are good places to let them gain some independence and freedom. In addition to kids clubs (where older kids can check themselves in and out), they can also go eat at the buffet on their own or hit the arcade.

Let the Kids Play at Camp Ocean

carnival cruise ship at night

Carnival offers up a spot for kids to hang out and play in a supervised setting, known as Camp Ocean. Here, you can drop off kids aged 2-11 (there are also teen hangouts onboard as well that kids can come and go as they please) to play while parents enjoy themselves around the ship. In fact, your kids will likely beg you to let them play here.

Camp Ocean has everything from group activities to arts and crafts to movie time to video games. It’s a fantastic way to go enjoy the ship yourself while your kids also have a blast.

Try Your Hand at Trivia

Looking for a fun way to get some friendly competition during your trip? Trivia contests go on several times a day, covering all sorts of themes from The Simpsons to flags of the world. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a Jeopardy! winner to be able to compete. You’ll find all skill levels having a good time playing along. And if you win? A Carnival winner’s medal might be yours.

Watch a Comedian at the Punchliner Comedy Club

Cruise lines are known for their shows and entertainment on board. If you want to laugh, then check out the Punchliner Comedy Club or the Limelight Lounge. There are usually two types of shows — a more family-friendly routine that takes place earlier in the evening and a late-night show that’s definitely adults-only. And trust us when we say that the adults-only shows are exactly that. Even some grown-ups might be shocked by some of the jokes!

Dance the Night Away at the Nightclub Parties

If you like to go out to the club or love a dance party, then you’re going to love cruising. Not only are there nightclubs to enjoy, but there are often themed dance parties. For instance, Carnival has an “Electric White Night” where you put on your favorite white outfit to bust a groove. The parties usually start around 10 p.m. and go to around midnight (or later in some cases). So it’s not exactly South Beach, but is still a great time.

Attend the Hilarious Love & Marriage Game Show

A staple of many cruises is a take on The Newlywed Game, which on Carnival is known as the “Love & Marriage” game show. Here, three couples are selected from the audience as contestants. Then, they separated and asked private questions about each other and their marriage, where they must match the answers given by their spouse.

The answers are sometimes funny, sometimes surprising, but always interesting. For anyone that’s married or ever been married, it’s a can’t miss show.

Ride the Only Roller Coaster at Sea

carnival cruise ship at night

Every new class of cruise ship aims to offer that’s a signature feature — something not seen anywhere else. In the case of Carnival, that’s the BOLT! roller coaster. This is a literal roller coaster that circles the aft portion of the ship. You’ll find it on Excel-class ships like Mardi Gras, Celebration, and Jubilee.

The ride doesn’t last long — only about a minute — and there is a charge. Still, it’s a fun experience, and it’s not every day that you get to ride a roller coaster atop a cruise ship.

Get a Massage in the Spa

Cruise ships are floating resort hotels. That means they come with all sorts of services, including a full spa. You can get pampered in style, with everything from a massage to acupuncture. And what’s more relaxing than getting a rub down while on your vacation? It will set you back some cash (massages aren’t free), but you’ll come out of it feeling worth a million bucks.

Watch the Stage Shows on the Ship

The dance production crew on a Carnival ship are supremely talented and put on several shows throughout the cruise. If you’re on the fence about these, let us say that you don’t want to miss them. There are productions many nights of the cruise, usually at 7:30 and 9:30 so that you don’t miss a thing if you have a dinner during that time. In the evening these are the main highlights of things to do and a fun way to spend your time before or after dinner.

Take an Excursion in a Port of Call

This article is purposely focused on the things you can do on a Carnival ship, but there is a lot of fun off of it too. We suggest taking at least one excursion to get out and explore wherever you are in port. They can offer a way to do things that you’d never be able to experience back home.

If you aren’t sure which one is right for you, go talk with the staff at the shore excursions desk on the ship. Here you can get all the ins and outs of each experience and pick the perfect one for you.

Watch (or Compete in) the Poolside Contests

One of the most fun things the Carnival has cooked up during sea days are the “contests” by the pool on days at sea, such as the hairy chest contest. Imagine eight of the biggest, burliest, hairiest passengers all stripping their shirts and dancing to win the crown for the contest. The contest takes place poolside during the early afternoon. Be sure to grab a spot to watch early as the entire ship will be there.

Pour The Least Expensive Beer We’ve Seen on a Cruise

Carnival Beer Station

It’s no secret that cruise lines make money on selling drinks on the ship. It’s common to pay $7-8 for a beer and upwards of $10-12 for a cocktail on Carnival. So when there is a deal to be found, you should pay attention.

Carnival offers a self-serve beer tap, usually found in the ship’s buffet. You simply tap your key card and are charged by the ounce you pour. The price comes out to about $4-5 for a beer — making it the cheapest we’ve seen on a cruise ship.

Have a Relaxing Soak in One of the Hot Tubs

There’s a lot of talk about the pool on a cruise, and it is one of the main focal points on board. But don’t forget about the hot tubs. There are several on the ship, including ones in the Serenity adults-only area and near each pool. Have a dip and let the heat and bubbles massage away the soreness. Just make sure you are comfortable sharing a hot tub with others as they can get crowded.

Enjoy the Biggest Drink on the Cruise Ship

Fish bowl drink

Part of the fun of a cruise is letting loose a little bit… or a lot. So what about grabbing the biggest drink on the ship?

In the RedFrog Pub, Carnival serves up tropical drinks that you can get in a “fish bowl.” This drink is huge — about 2-3 times the size of a normal beverage. It will run you about $35-40, but that’s for the drink and the souvenir glass that can be refilled later for a discount.

One tip — watch the daily planner for happy hour in the pub, when drinks are sold for half-off.

Get All Fancy for Elegant Night

Elegant nights take you back to the early days of cruising. These days things are a bit more casual, but elegant nights are still fun for many people. On a seven-day cruise there will normally be two elegant nights. Shorter cruises will have one. You can dress up as much or as little as you want, but if you are planning to dine in the main dining room, then it’s best to get dolled up. If you’re not sure what to wear, you can read our guide here .

Try a Drink from Every Bar on the Ship

Keep your wits about you, but you can do a bar crawl across the ship if you’re so inclined. There are normally a ton of places to get a drink — more than a dozen in many cases — so be sure to pace yourself over a couple of days. But if you’re looking for a way to spend your days at sea, try a sample from each bar on the ship. Each bar will have many of the same drinks, but some have special menus not found elsewhere.

Win a Contest on the Ship

We’ve talked about trivia and the hairy chest contest. There are a lot more contests for everything from free-throw shooting to ping-pong. Try your hand at whatever you’re good at and do your best to win first place. Carnival often gives away a famous “ship on a stick” (a golden cruise ship trophy) that you can always keep to remember your vacation.

Really Relax in the Serenity Adults-Only Area

There’s no shortage of topside places to relax on the newest Carnival ships, including multiple pools and hot tubs. But the Serenity Adults-Only area is among the most relaxing areas. First no kids are allowed (it is 21+). But even better is that we think many people either don’t know about the area or simply want to be where the action is at the main pool.

In our experience there are drastically fewer people here than poolside. That gives you some nice peace and quiet. There are also private clamshell loungers and hot tubs to relax even more.

Don’t Miss the Towel Animal Invasion

Towel animal invasion

Carnival is famous for their towel animals. Head back to the cabin after dinner and you’ll be greeted by one created by the room steward. But head to the pool deck early in the morning toward the end of your cruise, and you’ll find a full invasion.

Something special that Carnival likes to do is to put together hundreds of towel animals across all the pool loungers. You’ll find elephants, dinosaurs, alligators, dogs, turtles, and more. If you’re an adult, it’s a fun little quirk. But if you have kids, it’s something they will definitely want to see.

Do a Search for the Ship’s Coin

If you want to explore the ship and have a fun scavenger hunt at the same time, then set out to hunt down the ship’s coin.

Carnival ships have a coin minted as a memento of the vessel being built. The coin is then displayed and passengers can go view it. There often isn’t much fanfare around the coin, so don’t expect a big neon sign pointing to it. Instead, it’s been enclosed in a small glass box with a picture of the ship and labeled with the year it was built.

We’ve found them often near pool decks in the open air toward the middle of the ship, but locations may vary.

Take Your Picture in Front of the Ship

One thing that you can’t miss is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to remember your cruise — getting a photo with the ship. When you board on embarkation day, there will be a photographer and a backdrop with an image of the ship. And when you get off at ports of call you’ll see a photographer setup as well.

These photos are great, but you will have to pay for them if you decide to buy (taking the photo itself is no charge). You can also just find a spot on the pier with the ship in the background to where you can take a selfie that won’t cost you anything at all.

How cold does it get on deck at night?

Cool Cruiser

Hey all - relatively newbie cruiser here. This will be my 2nd cruise, but first since I moved to California 6 years ago.

Do the decks get cold at night? Sounds like a dumb question but I have a lot to pack for a bachelorette party and my suitcase space is limited! Do you bring a jacket? I'm definitely a warm-blooded southern Californian now, it's about the same temperature here as our destinations! (Aruba, Curacao, and Grand Turk sailing from Orlando!)

You should be fine...You are heading to warm ports. I did the exact itinerary in November and the weather was perfect each day. Doesn't hurt to bring a sweater....but that would be it. The only issue you may run into is embarkation day if a unique cold front dips down into Florida... (like this past week lol). You didn't mention which month your cruise is...so this could be irrelevant

90,000+ Club

Where you're going, it will be summer all the time. The wind can cause you to feel cool...but the temps will be in the mid-70's to 80's.

I'm in Chicago and I get cold easily (remind me again why I live here!? LOL!). But, yes, I feel that it does get chilly on the deck at night. And it's windy, so that doesn't help either. I always have a sweatshirt, or two, plus cardigans for over my sundresses in the dining room.

We always bring along something with long sleeves. My wife will have a shawl, sweater or light jacket. I pack a sweatshirt. Even though outdoor temps could be fine, we often found indoor venues can be especially cool. It's good to be prepared! Happy sailing!

Very warm ports of call for you.

Inside the ship in public area can get chilly because of the a/c so do take some sort of wrap. ;)

JMAE

Depending on the weather it may get cool but you also have to take into account that the ship may be sailing between 15 to 22 knots. The temperature may be okay, but the "wind chill" from sailing may cause you to feel cool. We take lightweight jackets.

As stated, your destinations are in perpetual summer. Orlando however, can be cool in winter. Today, for instance, you would have needed at least a sweater. You can always check the week before for long range weather forecasts, and plan from there.

I agree. My adult daughter found inside the ship chilly and needed a sweater.

Saint Greg

I always bring a light jacket. It can get windy. It can rain. Some get cold in the theater or comedy club.

riclop

Bringing a sweater or light jacket does not hurt.

elchichicuilote

I don't think the ocean temperature off of Los Angeles is nearly as warm as the Southern Caribbean. When you're at sea, the ocean temperature is important.

When I cruised from Los Angeles to Mexico (Mazatlan and nearby) a few years ago in April, it got a bit chilly late at night. They had nice thick comforters out on the lounge chairs to snuggle under for the nighttime movies, and they were much used.

But the southern Caribbean is warmer than that area of the Pacific. Check out the ocean temperature in Aruba here: https://www.seatemperature.org/central-america/aruba/oranjestad.htm

It doesn't get very far away from 80 degrees, and the air temperature on deck won't be too far from the sea temperature.

You might want a light windbreaker to keep the breeze away, especially when you're on the northern part of your cruise. But as for me, I might risk going without a jacket. How much of a disaster would it be if you decided to retreat to the indoor portions of the ship to warm up?

I always bring something to throw over my outfit (light sweater or wrap) at night but not just for the deck as the dining room and many inside venues on the ship are chilly.

TNcruising02

I always bring one very light jacket. The rest of my tops are either short sleeve or sleeveless.

It can widely vary, so it’s best to come prepared with a sweater or hoodie and pants for evenings outside just in case. It may be perfectly warm, or there may be a chill.

In winter it actually could be cool on the deck. While it is normally warm I have been there certain times when it has been cold.

Clarea

The weather varies so that it can be cool at times.

I just caught your second post with the date of the cruise.

Yes you just never know that time of year.

Likely at night it will be a little chilly so good to have a cover up.

As to the ports I have seen it range from very cool in the early morning to rainy to warm and even hot by the afternoon.

As you get close to the cruise I would check the weather forecast to finalize what clothing you will bring especially for your time in port.

With this said, it's a great time to be sailing the Caribbean.

Keys2Heaven

If you can, roll your clothes, as this will save you space. We very rarely see anyone (female) wearing anything but perhaps a light cover of some sort on Lido. It is windier if you go up to the jogging track area or Serenity. These are very warm ports and as someone else mentioned will probably be chillier inside.

I'm sure you know that "cold" is subjective. :D (We live in New England. We often cruise the last week of February because it's school vacation. I dress for my destination when we fly to our home port city - shorts, t-shirt, and flip flops. You should see the looks I get from fellow flyers. Some are jealous that we're headed to warmer temps while some look at me like I'm bat-s**t crazy! )

That said, I always pack two light cotton sweaters. I find that the interior areas of the ship, like the Main Dining Room and show lounges, can be chilly. I usually just carry my sweater as we stroll the outside decks at night.

The only time I could see the outside decks being chilly is when you are in Orlando.

Have a great cruise!

The above post is a good yardstick. I also bring a light windbreaker type jacket and only one sweater/wrap. Happy Cruising! :D

I always like to bring a light jacket or sweater, just something to cover my arms when I'm out at night.

Weird.. John Head has my question posted to his page, however someone by the name of Mia submitted it and added some pretty rude commentary, ***??!

Carnival Freedom's next two sailings canceled after funnel fire, second within 2 years

carnival cruise ship at night

A fire in the exhaust funnel of the Carnival Freedom this weekend has disrupted a cruise for the second time in less than two years — and will mean that the Florida-based ship's next two sailings are canceled.

Damage to the funnel will require the cancellation of Carnival's next two cruises out of Port Canaveral, which were scheduled to depart Monday and Friday.

There were about 3,700 passengers onboard the ship when the fire occured. And the two upcoming sailings, which were canceled, likely would have had a similar passenger count amid the busy Spring Break season.

Carnival initially had said it expected no changes in its upcoming cruises, but on Sunday afternoon said the cancellations would be required.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," according to a statement issued by Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

Carnival said it made the decision after "our technical team completed a thorough assessment" during the ship’s visit Sunday to Freeport in the Bahamas.

In the statement, Carnival said: "We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both canceled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit, so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support."

In a Facebook post, Carnival's widely followed brand ambassador, John Heald, conceded that many people who booked one of the canceled cruises are "feeling very disappointed," and he apologized for the turn of events.

But, Heald added that he wanted to assure affected passengers that, "when you rebook, using your full refund and your 100% future cruise credit, that the crew will be standing by to give you all the fun you deserve."

More than 500 people responded to the post, with many saying they thought Carnival was generous with the compensation offer. But some people who said they were on the cruise that experienced the fire said they thought Carnival should have done more for the people who were on the ship.

Carnival said the fire was confined to the funnel area. The cruise line said there are no reports of injuries to passengers. Two firefighting crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Carnival said that, at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to the Carnival private island of Princess Cays due to adverse weather.

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. "Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated, but cannot yet be confirmed."

By 5:20 p.m. Saturday, the fire was extinguished.

How safe are cruise stops? Travel advisories are only one marker for destinations

Carnival said the ship's captain made multiple announcements to passengers and crew, and advised all but essential safety personnel to stay away from balconies and all open decks.

The port-side portion of the funnel had fallen onto Deck 10, and the firefighting response put out any flames.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been notified of the fire, and Carnival activated its incident response team to support the ship’s crew.

Carnival said there were no other operational issues with the ship’s systems, and the ship, which was on a four-night cruise, was visiting Freeport on Sunday.

A cruise ship funnel generally serves as a smokestack to lift emissions above the deck, thus away from passengers and crew.

On Saturday evening, "Carnival Freedom guests enjoyed the Elegant Night dinner as planned, and, with the exception of the open decks, all areas of the ship are fully functioning," Carnival said in its statement.

The Carnival Freedom's next voyage was scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday afternoon on a five-night Eastern Caribbean cruise. That cruise had port-of-call stops scheduled at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic and at Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

But that sailing and a Friday sailing both have been canceled. Friday's five-night sailing also was scheduled to stop at those two ports of call, but in reverse order.

In May 2022 , a fire broke out in the funnel area of the Carnival Freedom while it was docked in Grand Turk. Carnival then canceled three scheduled sailings of the Carnival Freedom out of Port Canaveral because of the need to repair the ship's fire damage at a shipyard in Grand Bahama.

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

“They are responding with all of the assets at their disposal,” he said in a statement. “Our prayers right now are for the missing individuals and victims of this tragedy. We thank God for the effective service of our first responders.”

Here’s what we know.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas has a roundtrip itinerary scheduled to depart Baltimore on April 12, according to the cruise line’s website. “We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” a spokesperson for the line said in an email. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .

Was your cruise itinerary changed?: What to do next

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

Could ships be rerouted to New Jersey ports following Baltimore Key Bridge collapse?

In the wake of a devastating bridge collapse in Baltimore, shipping routes for cargo and cruise ships may undergo significant alterations, potentially rerouting vessels to ports in New Jersey.

Port Director of Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Beth Rooney said her organization offered assistance and resources.

“The Port Authority is in touch with our counterparts in Baltimore, and we stand ready to assist with emergency resources and any other assistance that may be needed,” she said. “The Port of New York and New Jersey is proactively working with our industry partners to respond as needed and ensure supply chain continuity along the East Coast.”

At about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a vessel leaving the Port of Baltimore struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge. A video shows the ship hitting one of the bridge's columns before part of the bridge fell onto the ship and then fully collapsed into the Patapsco River.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a massive search was underway as multiple vehicles along with contractors repairing potholes were on the bridge at the time of its collapse, as reported by USA TODAY .

Data from ship tracking and maritime analytics provider MarineTraffic shows that on the day of the crash, 29 ships were expected to arrive at the port within 24 hours and 14 more were expected in the coming days.

Two people were rescued during the initial hours of the search.

The mayor of Baltimore, Brandon M. Scott, issued an executive order Tuesday morning declaring a state of emergency for the city. It is set to remain in place for 30 days.

"The Executive Order mobilizes the City of Baltimore's Emergency Operations Plan to deploy emergency resources to protect the persons affected by the incident and expands the resources available to tackle the emergency situation," the press release stated.

The Port of Baltimore announced that vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore will be suspended until further notice.

Between cargo ships and cruise ships, numerous vessels sail in and out of the port each day. In the wake of this tragedy, where will they all go?

Major ports nearby

The Port of New Jersey and New York is the largest port on the East Coast and a relatively short trip from the Port of Baltimore, making it a viable option for rerouting.

Other major ports along the East Coast that could see rerouted ships include:

  • Port of Savannah
  • Port of Charleston
  • Port of Virginia
  • Port of Miami
  • Port of Boston

Cruise ships

Three major cruise lines run voyages in and out of the Port of Baltimore: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian, all using the port for Caribbean, Canadian and other Atlantic destinations.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said the company is working on alternatives for its ships.

"Our Port Logistics team is currently working on alternatives for our ongoing and upcoming sailings. We will message our guests and travel partners directly once our plans are finalized."

Royal Caribbean's, Vision of the Seas is on a 12-night Southern Caribbean sailing that is not due back into port until April 4.
