Precision Racing Shock & Vibe Handlebar Clamp

Precision Racing Shock & Vibe Handlebar Clamp

The Shock & Vibe acts as suspension for your handlebars. The Quad's frame moves up and down and pitches left to right while the bars are suspended by the Shock & Vibe Clamp. This gives the feel, from the rider’s perspective, that the bars are not moving, but are staying parallel to the course. Without the bars being jerked, the quad's movement is felt in the foot-pegs as the quad kicks left to right. This allows the rider to keep balance and position over the quad by just lifting a leg as the peg rises.

  • If purchased for LSR stem it will come with anti-vibe hardware to make it work.

Long travel front setup for XC-400ex

  • Add to quote

Hi,guys.I'm looking into a cheap long travel suspension setup for my 400 ex.By the looks of if the best cheap long travel shocks are from a yfz 450R,I know that people have put the X version numerous times on a 400ex.My plan is to get some +2 alba A-arms and use the yfz450R shocks.I found some that are already revalved for XC and their lenght is 18 3/4 which I guess is what you'd wanna use on a long travel A-arm.Any better options out there?I'm looking for something around the 800 $ range, but I might spend a little more if it's really worth it.I know that for that kind of money I should probably look into a regular travel shock's and A-arms,but I love the feel of the long stroke.I Ride mainly woods and fast field sections and pretty much everything that I can find ...So I need a good general setup. Thanks guys

TRX2fiveO

Welcome to the forums. . . . Gibsons are pretty inexpensive, American Star sells a complete set-up less shocks for roughly 485 but. . . . . but cheap and long travel do not belong in the same sentence. . . lol I would suggest doing some homework on durability. Nothing like ripping through the woods on your new "cheap" a-arms and you hit a root and snap one? Guess you can picture the next few frames of this story. . . lol good luck keep us posted on your decision

I'm not going cheap on the A-arms,although ALBA are one of the cheapest ones out there, people seem happy with their products. The gullwing design and the ability to run long travel shocks is what got me sold on them. Not to mention that they're a far better build than american star, fullflights and so on.Only concern is,can I run them with the yfz 450R shocks. If it's possible I think this will be a damn good match for under 800 bucks.Keep in mind that the YFZ shocks are already revalved for XC,so that's a few hundred bucks saved.

Any more thoughts ? :icon_ cry:

love2ride

Hasn't anyone successfully installed yfz450r's on a 400ex??

That would be pointless... with the fabrication you'd have to do.... it would be like trying to put 450r arms on. JD Performance makes a real nice set of arms for about 6 Benjamins

Why would that be pointless? There is a reason why they are on the 450R so if someone has them (like myself) and wants them on a 400 why not do it? Apparently it has been done: http://www.suzukicentral.com/forums...one.html#/forumsite/20784/topics/91142?page=1

Coletrain

Get some 450r shocks and send them to Jet Suspension. They will valve and spring them for the 400 and can convert them to long travel. Call alba or JD and ask what length shocks thier arms take. Before you get them.

Look up Rocket ron racing Ronald D. Elmore he's a premier XC/MX shock builder too

SlammedRanger

The reason its pointless is for the money and time put in you can get way better and nicer set up. Yamaha's are well known for having the worst suspension on the market. There shocks blow out consistantly. Everytime i ride with a raptor or yfz if they have stock suspension im prepared for the ride to be cut short by shock blowouts.

PROJECT HONDA 400EX: New I-Shock suspension package and Rox Anti-Vibe Rizer bars

long travel shocks for 400ex

After last installing a set of new FullBore plastic, a ripping graphics kit, and a new seat, Our aging Honda 400EX was then put to an extended, long term test session. We thrashed on it for days on end. Then suddenly, it ended up all alone, sitting in the back corner of the mighty Dirt Wheels garage. The problem? Sure, we loved the Honda’s rugged and easy-riding motor; heck, we even liked its stable handling manners. But, there were now so many hot new mid-sized sport machines (YFZs, KFXs, LTZs, and even Polaris Predators) that the EX soon found its way into the least often used part of our stable. After much neglect, we thought it time to dust it off, pull it out of storage, and made our Honda 400EX a Project Quad.

BACK IN ACTION One area where the Honda 400EX could definitely use some help, especially on our older 2003 model, was in the suspension department. The stock shocks had seen their best days long ago and the overly narrow front end didn’t exactly fit well with our favored high speed riding antics. Our goal? To make the EX suspension and ride much more comfortable and able to handle an occasional race.

long travel shocks for 400ex

To do that, we picked a new player in the suspension and A-arm market. HydroDynamics USA has come out with a line of ATV front suspension kits called I-Shocks. They sell these as a complete kit, including upper and lower A-arms, bushings, tie rods, steel brake lines and clamps, and even the shocks themselves. They are so confident of the quality that they offer a full lifetime warranty on the final product.

long travel shocks for 400ex

KIT CARSON  We picked up one of I-Shocks’ new suspension kits for our 400EX’s front end. The suggested retail price for the Honda 400EX kit is $1850. While that might sound like a lot of money, you do get the complete kit with shocks and everything needed to install it. You will not have to piece together all the parts you would need to build a similar kit, such as shocks ($1000-$1500), wider A-arms ($400-$700), and new brake lines ($100-$200). Once you figure in prices for separate shocks, separate A-arms, replacement brake lines and clamps, then all of sudden you appreciate the I-Shock kit’s value.

SHOCK TECH EXPLAINED To get a better idea of what the I-Shock technicians are looking to do with their new suspension kits, we spoke with company president Darren McGarvie. “We have taken a very logical and scientific approach to suspension which is why some of the components you see may look different than some models produced by other manufacturers,” said Darren. “Suspension should not be a ‘black art’ or difficult for the average enthusiast to grasp. I think our customers will come to appreciate our ‘suspension made simple’ concept. A common question we get with most aftermarket A-arms and shocks is… ‘Will these shocks work with that arm?’ or ‘Where do I find brake lines for my new front end?’ ” “With our new complete front end package kits, we have assembled what we consider to be the very best suspension products in the world, all in one easy to install kit. It includes everything from shocks and A-arms to specialty tools and an instructional DVD.”

long travel shocks for 400ex

SHOCK & AWE “Let me explain some of our design characteristics and at the same time perhaps dispel a few myths,” added McGarvie. “First, the term ‘long travel arms.’ This popular design incorporates the use of a ‘long shock.’ However, this does not mean that the front suspension will necessarily have more travel. If your ATV frame hits the ground when bottoming, you are probably at max travel already. What good is 14 inches of travel when four inches of it is underground? “The motion ratio or leverage ratio can be, and often is, manipulated to offer better performance. The leverage ratio is the relationship of the wheel movement versus shock shaft movement, a critical factor in suspension design. Also, the long shock design usually incorporates a larger shock which contains more oil. More oil means less oil contamination issues and better heat dissipation. “However, can technology offer us solutions to these problems without the use of heavy and expensive ‘long shock’ front ends? Absolutely. What I believe is most important here is not the motion ratio or leverage ratio, but rather the leverage ratio curve. The leverage ratio curve, commonly referred to as the wheel force curve, indicates the progression of force that is required to move the tire through the entire span of travel. Basically, you want your front end to get stiffer before it bottoms right? The problem is, a linear leverage ratio curve, as found stock on most ATVs, will offer little bottoming resistance unless the shock is valved and/or sprung abnormally stiff. Unfortunately, this stiff shock will be harsh on smaller bumps. “So, how do you get the suspension plush on top, firm on bottom? Run a larger percentage leverage ratio curve. This has everything to do with the geometry of the suspension components and can be accomplished without a ‘long shock’ as we have proven through data acquisition. This process takes care of the progression in both valving and spring.

BENT GULLWING STYLE A-ARMS “If that’s not enough for you, what about A-arms with the bent or ‘gull wing’ look? Some claim a plusher ride! Unless my schooling has failed me, the tubes on A-arms could do loops from one end to the other and as long as the pivot tubes, shock mount location, and the ball joint boss are all in the exact same position, you will have the exact same geometry—period!” claims McGarvie. “What about strength issues? I personally believe a straight tube is stronger than a pre-bent one. And ground clearance? I think the closer to the ground the arms are, the less ground clearance you have.”

PLUS ONE FORWARD A-ARMS “Okay, let’s talk about +1 forward A-arms. Listen people, bigger is not always better! A-arm manufacturing 101 says to first find the CG (center of gravity) of the machine. Check the squat and dive characteristics of the machine, which include chain forces, calculate weight transfer, and then, only then, make a logical, calculated decision based on sound engineering principles confirmed by rider input. “We have found only one model of ATV that actually had improved performance with the tires moved forward. This is the Yamaha Banshee. Guess what, our Banshee arms are +1 forward. Try this little maneuver with the Honda TRX 450 and you would find yourself looped out right off the gate! If you see a manufacture with a complete line of +1 forward arms—ask them why? “My goal is to help you the consumer understand that suspension is not a ‘black art’ but a science of common sense. Most suspension guys don’t want you to know how simple suspension really is; we do. We make suspension simple.”

INSTALL After our suspension primer from Darren, we were eager to tackle the 400EX’s front end. The I-Shock kit comes with a check list of the parts included inside it. The A-arms are built of chromoly tubing and consist of upper and lower units with pivot bushings, sleeves, zerk fittings, and ball joints pre-installed in all four arms. It also comes with two tie rods, and four brake line clamps with steel braided brake lines. They include a ball joint press tool to get your stock ball joints loose and a shock spring pre-load tool for adjusting the piggyback reservoir shocks. The shocks themselves come with adjustable compression, rebound and preload settings. While the shocks are built in Italy, I-Shock imports the bodies and springs and sets them up to their own internal specs. They also offer a rear shock rebuild service, which costs around $50-$60 and includes new oil, nitrogen and seals. The toughest part was removing the stock ball joints (with the supplied tool) and replacing them with the new units included in the kit. From start to finish it took us a reasonable two hours to replace the entire front end on our 400EX and bleed out the brake lines (the most time-consuming operation of the installation.) Once we had dialed in the ride height and aligned the front end of the machine and set the toe-in/toe-out, (explained clearly in the printed instructions and on the included DVD video), we bolted on the new I-Shocks and were ready to try the machine out.

ROX PIVOTING ANTI-VIBE RISERS To complete our Project, we opted to install a set of Rox Pivoting Anti-vibe Risers so that we would have a much wider choice of bends and heights than the EX’s stock handlebars. The Rox Anti-vibe Risers allow you to put on the much less tiring “Fatty” handlebars that help take out some of the vibration you get through the stockers. They offer a similar effect to what you might get by installing an aftermarket steering stem on your machine. It was a simple matter to bolt the new Risers on and then clamp on the new, fatter handlebars. Rox makes a complete line of Risers for almost any type sport or even utility quad application. They sell for $149.95 for the Anti-vibe Risers, with the “Fatty” bars going for an additional $69.95.

TRACK TEST When we took our newly widened Honda 400EX out for a test spin, we immediately noticed the much more stable ride, especially through rough, whooped-out terrain. Where we had our hands full on the stock width front end, and stock, worn out suspension, the new I-Shock equipped EX had a much superior ride through this type of terrain. It sucked up the bumps and meanest pot holes that had previously jarred our test riders hands off the bars. Speaking of bars, the new Rox Pivoting Anti-Vibe Risers and Fatty handlebars were a great addition as well, especially when the going gets rough. They significantly cut down on vibration and offer a much more comfortable and ergonomic position when riding aggressively.

Overall, we liked the ease of installation, much improved handling and plusher riding front end we got with the I-Shock front suspension kit and Rox Pivoting Anti-Vibe Risers and Fatty handlebars. They raised the comfort level of the 400EX up quite a bit, and now it’s getting much more track and trail time, instead of gathering dust in our garage. For more information, contact I-Shock at (866) GO Shock or e-mail them at ishock.com. For more on the Rox Anti-Vibe Pivoting Risers contact them at (218) 326-1794 or roxspeedfx.com.

Best way to go for 400EX suspension upgrades

Tagels

  • Add to quote

What do you guys think is the best way to go for upgrading my 400EX's suspension? i was thinking ether 450R front shocks plus re valving the rear and getting a GT thunder XC link, or getting a set of fox float R fronts and re valving the rear with the GTT XC link. i will be mostly just trail riding and i will probably go to the track a few times a year. and i am also open to other suggestions. Thanks

Adam4fiddy

i would suggest picking up 450 front shocks and send all three off to get revalved, resprung for your weight. I think this is the most affordable option to really upgrade the 400's suspension. I had the 450 fronts on mine and it was a huge improvement and they didnt have any work done to them.

Alright i will take that idea into consideration. i also have another question, do you think a 400EX with 450R re valved fronts and a stock re valved rear would handle better then a stock 450R?

I agree with adam4fiddy! Thats going to be the cheapest and best improvement

hes right i done it to my 08 much needed umprovement and i know this aint my post but do you think the a arms and swing arm of a 450r will fit a 400ex

im not sure if it would handle better, i had both at one time and they felt different. Mine were not revalved tho either. And for the a arms and swinger, i know the a arms wont fit and not sure about the swinger.

gwhunter350

The 450 shocks on a ex are great! I've been thinking about going long travel and have a set of gt thunder rebuild fronts that are brand new... shoot me a PM if interested

Alright thanks guys. still one more question though, do you think fox float X evols would be better then 450r rebuilds on the 400ex? i know there is a big price difference but i still just want to know because i might be able to find some foxs for a deal. and also do the float x evols even work on the 400ex? because they only have them listed for the 450r and other 450 quads on their website.

you'd need to get LT a arms... Unless they make standard travel shocks. I think they do but you probably wont see many of those

Alright well i will probably just get some 450r shocks and have them re valved. Thanks for your help!

PROJECT TEST: Teixeira Tech Honda TRX400EX Project Quad

Ed Teixeira is the owner, fabricator, mastermind behind Teixeira Tech. Teixeira Technologies is a relatively small ATV component company that specializes in building quality suspension components that work! Ed personally combined over 20 years of experience as an ATV racer with a passion for and great understanding of suspension fabrication. Teixeira has developed a reputation for racing what he sells/ builds, and even winning a BiTD championship with it.

The current GNCC and other XC series, as well as many other organizations that adopt its rulebook, will not let a youth racer ride a 450- class machine until they are 16 years of age. Many youth racers are growing out of their Raptor 250 race bikes and left with slim pickings for a properly sized, “legal” ride. This age rule has actually caused a resurgence of quality 400EX and LTZ400 builds on the East Coast. Ed’s daughter had recently found herself in a similar situation while trying to race the SORRA XC series in Northern California. She turned to Dad for help, and Ed decided to purchase a low-priced 400EX and build it for her. The 400EX turned out to be a “real prize.” With a purchase price of $600, it was pretty well-hammered and burned through about a 1/2 quart of oil every ride. After his initial purchase, Ed’s first thought was to send the complete worn-out motor to his long-time sponsor and friend at CT Racing for a complete rebuild. The next thoughts were spent pondering which leftover 450R parts might work on this build and possibly save him some money. Ed had built and raced a handful of TRX450Rs over the past years and had boxes of stock and aftermarket parts still lying around. These same stock take-off parts can be acquired from the many used parts sources in the “Showcase” section of every issue of ATV UTV Action.

Teixeira-400EX-026

THE BUILD STARTS IN BACK With the current shape of the 400EX, it was clearly going to require a complete tear-down to bare frame and some gusset work before building. After a good, deep pressure-washing, he tore it apart, shipping the motor to CT as soon as it was removed from the chassis. With the engine on its way to potential greatness and the chassis sitting bare bones on the floor, Ed inspected it thoroughly for cracks and then welded in his entire 20-piece gusset kit. Teixeira Tech gusset kits are engineered to strengthen the frame with small enough gussets that will still allow the frame to flex. The kits are actually cut on a water jet and sell for a reasonable $75. While he was cutting and welding, Ed cut off the grab bar section of the steel subframe and added mounts to utilize a bolt-on aluminum one from a TRX450R. After the chassis was gusseted and modified, it was sent out to W2G Powder Coating for a cool candy-colored finish. As a rule, Ed aims for three things when building a suspension package: proper linkage ratios, ground clearance and minimal stiction. To start the chassis, Ed wanted to give the 400EX a little more wheelbase. Much to his delight, he found that the 1-inch-longer ’06–’13 stock TRX450R swingarm fit the 400EX with nothing more than swapping out the spacers. Not only did the machine gain the necessary inch of wheelbase, it also just swapped out a near-new-condition swingarm for a 14-year-old blown-out one with seizing bearings. Score one for the good guys!

Even more important was that with the ’06–’13 swingarm, Ed could install his late-model Teixeira Tech long-travel shock linkage. This link gives the Honda more travel, accepting a longer-bodied shock and providing Ed’s tested and developed ideal leverage ratio. The 400EX actually accepted more than just a longer swingarm; the ’06–’13 swingarm installed complete with a 450R bearing carrier, axle, brake disc, caliper and locknut setup. The 400EX sprocket hub was swapped onto the 450 axle to keep everything lined up correctly, and the 400EX rear hubs were used to gain the ideal +1-inch rear width. According to Ed, the 450R rear end provides an additional 1/2 inch of ground clearance and better braking performance with the dual-piston caliper. The 450R rear end was finished up with a Teixiera Tech linkage and swingarm skids for protection.

Teixeira-400EX-030

UPGRADING THE FRONT END As the A-arms are not interchangeable, Ed based the front end around his long-travel XC 400EX arm kit. The XC arms increase wheel travel and shock length, add to the wheelbase, and widen the quad slightly. The A-arm kit uses mono bearings to reduce stiction where the A-arms pivot at the frame; this reduced stiction enhances the quality of the suspension travel. Ed also installed a Teixeira Tech +1 steering stem with a relocated steering flag to reduce bump steer, and an adjustable bar clamp to provide up to an inch of bar-placement adjustability.

After finalizing all his suspension specs, Ed turned to Elka Suspension to custom-build him a set of Stage 5 shocks. This was definitely not the cheapest available option for shocks, but some things are just worth bucking up for. The Stage 5s were valved for his daughter’s weight, but feature such a wide range of external adjustability that full-sized adult men can still enjoy it. With the suspension dialed in, Ed wanted to improve the front brakes as well. Unfortunately, the 450R front brakes do not just bolt in. After doing some research, he found that the dualpiston calipers from a YFZ450 were a direct bolt-on. Used calipers were just $50, and they bolted on just like the single-piston stockers.

Teixeira-400EX-028

RESTORING THE ENGINE The Honda 400EX has a very durable motor with good performance capabilities. Its power curve is very well suited to use as an off-road trail/ race quad, and for many it may be the best quad they could be riding. Enhancing the OEM-style power as CT Racing does with its 440 kit just makes it better. If you’re looking to build a fire-breathing dragon, you’re starting with the wrong quad, but if you want a fun, agile trail quad with a very torquey power curve with good top-end pull, this is a great way to go.

Allen from CT Racing and Ed discussed which motor package would suit the build best, and the 440 kit seemed to be a no-brainer. CT Racing has been modifying the 400EX since it was introduced back in 1999. They have done over 500 of their 440 kits throughout the years, winning the White Brothers 4-Stroke TT National, along with many Best in the Desert endurance races and countless MX races and titles using the 400EX as a platform. The CT 440 kit is built to be fast and dependable with a very wide power curve. The CT 440 package includes you shipping in your top end. CT dissects it, cleaning and prepping for the top-service work. CT ports the head, performs their high-flow, fiveangle- radius valve job, re-sleeves the cylinder, installs a high-compression piston using JE Pistons with compression ratios available from 11:1 to 13:1, a Web camshaft is installed, and a Cometic top-end gasket set. For additional reliability, one can opt for a GT Thunder head-stud kit to be installed as well. The compression ratio is dictated by what the customer wants to burn for fuel. Since this would be his daughter’s practice/play/race bike, Ed liked the convenience of a healthy pump-gas motor. For this reason, they went with an 11:1 setup. At 11:1, the 400EX will appreciate premium pump gas; you can even cut it with a little race gas for extra cooling, but it will run with just about any quality fuel that you dump in it.

Teixeira-400EX-027

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER CT delivered the complete motor, ready to go, and it was up to Ed to decide what carburetor he was going to use. The FCR carb kit for a 400EX works really well but costs over $600. After discussing it with CT Racing, he realized that once again the 450R could save him some serious dough. The ’04–’05 TRX came with a vacuum slide carb that nearly every racer ditched for the more expensive FCR. This same unwanted carb actually performs really well on both big-bore 400EXs and LTZ400s. Even luckier for Ed’s build was that he had two of them on the shelf. These carbs can be found used for $50–$90, should you ever need one. Once the engine and carb were installed, Ed realized that the airbox would need to be relocated for swingarm clearance and to reach the new carburetor. This was done with a Teixeira Tech airbox lift kit. The airbox is finished off with a 400EX Uni foam filter to keep the engine safe from contaminants. Teixeira Tech also supplied the build with beefy relocated footpegs and netted heel guards. The XC 400EX rolls on Maxxis XC tires that are fitted with the Tire Blocks run-flat system. Tire Blocks are specially cut and lubed wedges of foam that replace the air inside the tires for the ultimate in flat protection should the rider run into trees, rocks or anything else. Speaking of running into anything, a Precision stabilizer is also utilized to keep things controlled and ridable for longer periods of time. This really cool build was finished up with a handful of other cool trinkets and a Maier Plastic kit with a custom Chaos graphics kit.

RIDING IT We tested the CT/Teixeira creation for three days, riding it in the desert near Ocotillo Wells and into mountains of the Sierras. It performed flawlessly throughout and was just a fun quad to ride. Putting out well over 45 rear-wheel horsepower, it has more power than a typical 450 with exhaust, but it has a significantly wider power curve and more bottom-end pull than stock 450s. We enjoyed thrashing the Teixeira quad. Even set up for a lighter rider, this quad performed flawlessly through the abuse we served up.

The suspension is forgiving and soaks up G-outs and braking bumps. Cornering is also still precise and predictable, even with a heavier rider than it was set up for. The lengthened wheelbase improved highspeed characteristics and was truly appreciated when ripping down the faster sand washes. All in all, together Teixeira and CT Racing have come up with a really good overall 400EX setup with reasonably priced components and plenty of power and suspension. Not really what you’d expect from a 2000 400EX, but confidence-inspiring none the less. It’s exactly what a rider is going to want when he or she hits that age range.

long travel shocks for 400ex

By: Rob Richeson (RICO)

02/06/04 - I'd like to start this review with my thoughts on how this setup works compared to a standard travel Elka rear shock. I’ve ran a standard Elka shock for a little over one year and have been very pleased with it. My rear shock was setup for 100% Cross Country style riding/racing. I've used it on MX tracks and just turned the compression and preload way up to compensate the large jumps. It soaked up everything on the track that I could give it. The small breaking bumps were a little rough but you can't expect a XC shock to work well on the MX track when that's not what it was built for. The rear shock worked well in just about all areas but no matter what adjustments I made it still wanted to swap around and buck in long rough sections. It wasn't bad enough that it beat you to death but it made for a rough ride and would wear you out faster in a race or long ride

Before the Texas GNCC race this past weekend I was able to install the Elka Long Travel Kit on my 400ex rear end. I set the sag to Elka’s specs and figured I would adjust the rest and fine tune it when I got to Texas.

After arriving in Texas, I jumped on the quad and took off for the practice track. Within maybe 2 minutes on the quad, in some VERY rough terrain, I was absolutely AMAZED in the performance the new shock. I ran one full lap and figured it could be a little softer and that the rebound was just a tad to fast. I turned the rebound down 2 clicks and compression down 3 clicks. I went back out for 1 more lap, and I was even more amazed at how well linkage really worked. I purposely hit large humps, ruts, washed out areas, and rocks running across the trail faster than I would have before this setup, just to see if it would kick up or swap back and forth. Well, I couldn't get it to do anything, but work like it was designed. You riders know the feeling when you’re going down a trail and there's a washed out spot, you carry the front wheels over, let the back drop down in the rut and WHAMO. The rear end hits like a ton of bricks, and up comes the rear end like you’re on a bucking bull. Those days are over people because it will soak it up and all the other obstacles in the trail that you've slowed down for in the past. It was actually kind of hard to get the confidence to push the quad to the its limits "Well I might go over the bars and wreck if I do hit this spot with this much speed." I truly can't say enough good things about this setup, and I could go on for hours, but I won't. There’s no doubt in my mind that this kit WILL make you a faster and smoother rider, but it's up to you to have the confidence to push it to the limit.

Installation: The Elka linkage moves the shock into a more vertical position which is were the extra travel comes into place. The ONLY downfall to this new linkage is that it sits ¼ of an inch lower than the stock linkage which in turn will rub against some manufacturers skid plates. I placed washers in between the swingarm and skid plate on the front mounts to fix the problem. Another solution would be to cut a section out of the skid plate where the linkage rubs. The good thing is that the clearance issue is only at the front of the skid plate next to the frame and under the pivot bolt, and not at the back were ground clearance is an issue. In the pic below you can see the difference in the stock linkage (top) compared to the Long Travel Linkage from Elka (bottom).

Elka Linkage vs. Stock

The difference in the springs and crossover rings are significant. It’s hard to notice but the top spring on the left has a much lighter coil to it than the spring on the right. You might be thinking well the one on the right is not an SSD spring. You’re correct it’s not an SSD spring but the shock still has the Self Sagging option and will NOT sit higher than the front if you run SSD springs on your front shocks. The crossover ring is also larger to transfer the weight more evenly and at the appropriate time during the shock’s travel.

Please DO NOT be confused, this rear shock is an SSD shock and will work perfectly with any Elka front shocks with SSD springs. Actually, it would work great with any front shock setup with SSD.

Elka Springs

You do not have to be a shock technician nor do you need special tools to install this kit. Place the shock in a vice, back the preload off completely and remove the bottom spring retainer. (Pic 1) The retainer can be removed by pulling down on the springs and you slide the retainer off the shaft via the gap.

Elka Bottom Spring Retainer

With the retainer removed both springs and crossover ring should slide off the shaft. (Pic 2) Spray the threads down on the shaft with WD-40 and wipe away any grit or dirt that are on the threads. Reinstall the new springs and crossover ring and tighten down the preload slightly. (If you are not comfortable or confident in taking your shock apart send it to a trained technician) You’ll need to set the sag on the shocks once the shock is installed on the quad so don’t spend much time adjusting the preload.

Elka Shock Spring Removal

After the shock has been reinstalled, the sag should be set at 8.5 to 9 inches with the rider on the quad. The front should also have the same amount of sag. The green lines in the pic below show were to measure sag at both front and back of the frame. Wheel travel with only the Elka rear shock is 10.1 inch (increased by 1 inch over stock) and with the linkage you get 10.9inch (0.8 more than just the Elka rear shock). In the past people were cutting and rewelding the frame to move the upper shock mount. The idea of cutting and rewelding a frame is not the best thing. Another advantage of the Elka rear 400EX linkage is to give a different curve in the rising rate in the motion ratio. Instead of having a very small soft part at the beginning of the travel you will have a very long plush part, at the end it will rise to give you a good bottoming out resistance.

With the rear wheels slightly touching the ground, I had 13 inches between the ground and rear part of the frame. That is very impressive ground clearance that really shows while hammering down the trail.

Long travel A-Arm options?

  • Add to quote

I am currently building my 86 R from the ground up and I need to pick what a-arms to get. I am pretty convinced that I want to do long travel and a +3/+1 as far as geometry goes. question I have is what option for brand do I have? roll design ($1600) Lonestar DC-4 ($1000) Any others? I want to do the Roll arms but is it worth the extra $500-600 over the DC-4 LSR arms that have the same geometry?

I got laegers pro Trax long travel front arms with Elka long travel shocks on my 06 trx450r. On my 86 TRX250r I got American star +2/+1 arms with tcs zero preload stock travel shocks. I personally would try to find the laegers long travel set up for the 250. It's absolutely amazing on the 450. It's a true long travel and the steering is precise. I do not like the ball joint set up on long travel arms. Just my opinion but I do have both setup's to compare with.

Im not sure rolls are worth $1500. Check into fireball they arent listed but he makes a arms for the R for $800.

kellmx147 said: I just went through all this and I wound up going with Leagers LT +3 +1 arms. I asked on here and did research for months and while some people had issues dealing with them, I found Scott Taylor of Leagers to be really helpful and he contacted me every step of the way and got the arms to me in about 5 week and the shocks dropped from Elka about a week later. Really wanted Roll, spoke with Jed, but I would need to change too many parts to get them set up properly. Needed some 450r parts, and for the price, I ultimately couldn’t justify them I couldn’t ever get a call back from HRE, JD and LSR put out the time frame around 12 weeks. I haven’t installed my arms yet but I’m happy with the info and support I got along the way. Scott was a pleasure dealing with. View attachment 65374 Click to expand...

I spoke with Scott and he said those are the new design, they stopped making the ones with the bowed support.

Thats conserning that you couldn't get ahold of hre through phone. Did you try emailing? I always had good luck through email. But if they are not contacting I'll have to try someone else for a new set of a arms.

Personally I love the look of the roll arms. How the lower arms have the bend in them. Only other ones I have seen that are similar are the motocross dc-4 Lonestar arms. Looks like I’ll just bite the bullet and get roll design arms.

I agree, I love the looks. Nothing like it IMO However, you’re going to need either 400ex or 450r spindles and possibly calipers if I remember correctly what Jed told me. The Roll arms are 2 inches wider and the spindles account for the other 1/2 inch. In the end, for me personally, it became a hassle tracking down the proper parts to make the Roll arms work, which is why I went Leager as they bolt right up.

I saw that build series, I didn’t think those were stock knuckles and spindles though. Could be wrong. Hope you get it figured out.
