The revised 2021 British and Irish Lions tour schedule has been finalised, with two Tests in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town confirmed.
The Lions will no longer be facing an Invitational South Africa side, however, with a game instead against club side the Lions added to the fixture list.
Warren Gatland's Lions will also be unable to travel to play in Port Elizabeth, Durban and Nelspruit on the tour, with all eight tour games rearranged to be between Cape Town, Johannesburg, and one in Pretoria (vs the Bulls).
Games against the Lions (July 3) and then the Sharks (July 7), both in Johannesburg, will begin the tour, before the tourists will face the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria (July 10).
The final two tour games before the Tests will see the Lions face a South Africa 'A' side on July 14 and then the Stormers on July 17, both in Cape Town.

George North: Why Welsh rugby may never see his like again
- Welsh rugby
- George North
- Thursday 14 March 2024 at 12:55pm
Matt Southcombe
Sports reporter, ITV Wales
It feels like George North has been around forever, and so it feels almost unfathomable that Saturday will be his last game for Wales.
Having made his debut aged 18, he’s lived his life in the brightest of spotlights.
In 2010, he burst onto the scene as a bulldozing winger from Anglesey, rattling off two tries against South Africa on his debut standing opposite none-other than Bryan Habana.
Welsh rugby had never seen such raw athleticism. The size, speed and nimbleness made for an explosive package.
It didn’t take long for the hysteria to surround him. Hasty comparisons were drawn to All Black great Jonah Lomu. North’s modesty would never allow him to entertain such things.
The spectacular start to his career - by the time the 2011 Rugby World Cup was over, he’d scored nine tries in his first 15 matches - made him a global superstar.
In many ways, it is impressive that he simply kept his career on the straight and narrow, with countless commercial deals filling his inbox. Doors were being opened away from the rugby field, but his focus on what really mattered never wavered.
In 2013 he took his game to another level. His carrying of Israel Folau during the Lions tour of Australia is now one of the sport’s most iconic images. For a month, he tormented Australian rugby, leaving as the tour’s joint-top try-scorer with Alex Cuthbert. His 60-metre solo try in the first Test, where he left yellow jerseys clutching at thin air, will go down as one of the greatest Lions scores in history.
But it wouldn’t all be plain sailing.
A series of concussions would present challenges. North appeared low on confidence and his form suffered as a result.
HIs profile and the nature of the head injuries he suffered led to seemingly everyone having an opinion on whether he should continue playing.
North has always maintained that he sought regular independent medical advice before deciding to continue his career.
Heading through to the 2019 World Cup, critics seemed ever-present.
He became a victim of his early success. Test rugby wasn’t ready for a player like North and the Welsh rugby public came to expect blockbusting runs on an all too regular basis.
But the sport evolved. In many ways, it caught up.
Professional rugby is now a land of giants. North is no longer an outlier.
In recent years, if he’d made 10 yards with a carry, some would ponder why he did make 20. If he scored one try, why didn’t he score two.
Criticism was unfair. Statistically, he was roughly as prolific in the second half of his career as he was in the first.
In the latter years, he made the switch that Gatland always thought he could - from wing to centre.
The transition was not always smooth. He had a tough outing against Ireland - a team who are masters at exposing the opposition’s outside centre - at the Aviva Stadium during the Covid pandemic.
But he adapted and began showing some of the form of his career in 2021, helping Wales to another Six Nations title. It would be North’s fourth European success with his country, a haul that included the Grand Slams of 2012 and 2019.
By the end of that Six Nations, he seemed a shoo-in to start at outside centre for the Lions on the impending tour of South Africa.
But a heartbreaking ACL injury in a Rainbow Cup match at an empty Swansea.com Stadium ruined his hopes of making a third tour.
To his credit, he fought back to earn a place at his fourth Rugby World Cup last year and was an ever-present in the starting XV until the very end.
At one point in his career, you feared Welsh rugby would never know what they truly had in North until he was gone.
Happily, in more recent years, there seems to have been a greater appreciation of his talents.
He is undoubtedly a modern great. Third on Wales’ all-time caps list behind Alun Wyn Jones and Gethin Jenkins.
He is the youngest ever player to reach 100 caps and second on the all-time try-scoring list behind Shane Williams.
It is not hyperbole to ponder whether Welsh rugby will ever see another talent like his.

Moments that made them: George North
George North will forever have a place in The British & Irish Lions history. [more]
George North will forever have a place in The British & Irish Lions history.
Any discussion of the 2013 Tour to Australia is not complete without a mention of North’s try in the first Test or his iconic tackle on Israel Folau a week later.
Following the wing’s announcement that he will be retiring from Test rugby, let’s take a look back at the moments that made him.
Record-breaking start
What better way to announce your arrival on the international stage than a double against the reigning world champions.
When selected to play against South Africa in 2010, North became the joint-third youngest player to play for Wales while his pair of tries made him the youngest debutant scorer in his country’s history.
North had produced some blistering form for Scarlets earlier that season and carried that with him to a cacophonous atmosphere in Cardiff.
South Africa narrowly came out on top but North had announced himself as a star-in-the-making, outshining opposite man and former World Rugby Player of the Year Bryan Habana.
A star for club and country
North established himself as a starter during the 2011 Rugby World Cup and was an ever-present as Wales won back-to-back Six Nations crowns for the first time in 34 years.
He scored a late try as Wales beat Ireland 23–21 for a crucial win en route to a Grand Slam in 2012 and then played every minute of the 2013 Six Nations.
There, he was again integral to Wales’ success, scoring the only try of the game in a nerve-shredding 16-6 victory in France.
He moved to Northampton Saints ahead of the 2013/14 season and finished his first season in England as a Premiership champion, playing every minute as Saints scored a thrilling extra time win over Saracens at Twickenham.
Instant Lions hit
North’s contribution to a first Lions series win for 16 years cannot be overstated.
He scored a stunning try in the first Test, finished off another in the third and was involved in one of the most watched moments from any British & Irish Lions Tour in the second.
With the Lions in need of some inspiration when trailing early in the first Test, 21-year-old North provided an almighty spark.
The wing fielded a clearance kick before stepping and fending his way past several gold jerseys to slide into the corner for a glorious solo score, setting the Lions on their way to a series lead.
He provided another memorable moment in the Melbourne-staged second Test with his fireman’s lift on opposite number Folau in a remarkable demonstration of strength and courage.
North then rounded off a fairytale start to his Lions career with a try in the series-deciding third Test win in Sydney.
The second slam
Wales started their 2019 Six Nations campaign with a Friday night encounter in Paris, and it looked bleak for the visitors when they trailed 16-0 at half-time.
As only he could do, North single-handedly swung the momentum of the tie.
He pounced on a defensive error by France wing Yoann Huget to touch down and put Wales back in contention before intercepting lock Sebastien Vahaamahina’s pass to speed away for the match-winning try which completed Wales’ greatest ever comeback.
North’s exploits gave Warren Gatland’s side a huge shot in the arm and they went on to win the Six Nations title and Grand Slam.
One for the history books
Due to a couple of untimely injuries, North was never seen again in the Lions Test arena.
He did, however, play three fixtures on the 2017 Tour to New Zealand and scored in the tense 31-all draw against the Hurricanes but was subsequently forced to return home after tearing his hamstring.
He was then ruled out of the 2021 Tour to South Africa after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Ospreys.
Yet he remained a destructive force for Wales and won a fourth Six Nations title in 2021, this time featuring largely as a centre.
During the Round 3 victory against England, he became the youngest player to earn 100 caps for Wales.
Then on Super Saturday in 2023 he etched his name further into Welsh rugby’s history books, taking his tally of Championship tries to 23 – the most by any Welshman in the competition.
He calls time on a decorated international career as his country’s third most capped player and will always be remembered as a great try-scorer capable of the sublime whether in Wales or Lions red.

Two captive South African lions safely back home from Ukraine
The Eastern Cape in South Africa has welcomed back two lion brothers from captivity in Ukraine.
Tsar and Jamil, the three-year-old lion brothers, arrived at the Shamwari Private Game Reserve over the weekend. This marked the successful culmination of an effort led by the international wildlife charity Born Free.
RESCUED FROM UKRAINE CONFLICT
The goal was to rescue the lions from a life of mistreatment, starvation and conflict.
Maggie Balaskas, Born Free’s head of rescue and care, recounted the meticulous planning around rehoming the lions.
“After a traumatic start in life, and having already lived in five different homes, it’s a huge relief to know that Tsar and Jamil have arrived safely at their forever home,” Balaskas told HeraldLive .
BORN INTO CAPTIVITY
Tsar and Jamil were originally born into captivity in a Ukrainian zoo and separated from their mother as cubs. The pair had been subjected to exploitation as a tourist attraction on a farm.
Their fortunes changed when they were relocated to a rescue centre in Kyiv. Proper care at the rescue centre helped the lions recover from calcium deficiencies.
A collaborative effort in 2022, involving a team at the Ukrainian rescue centre, a Polish zoo, and Natuurhulpcentrum (NHC) facilitated the evacuation of the lions.
The pair were then moved to NHC’s wildlife rescue centre in Belgium after a brief stopover in Poland.
From there, they embarked on a journey to Johannesburg aboard a specialised flight in custom-made travel crates.
From Johannesburg the lions travelled more than 1 000 kilometres before arriving at the Shamwari Big Cat Sanctuary.
Upon their arrival, Tsar and Jamil wasted no time in exploring the natural bush of their 2.5 acre enclosure.
“In our 40th year of fighting for wild animals, I’m delighted Born Free has been able to provide the last piece of the puzzle by giving Tsar and Jamil safety and sanctuary at our Big Cat Sanctuary at Shamwari,” Balaskas added.
