Roger Waters Sets Rescheduled Tour Dates, Teases His ‘First Farewell Tour’

By Kory Grow

Roger Waters will embark on what he’s cheekily teasing as his “first farewell tour,” officially dubbed This Is Not a Drill, next summer. He was supposed to launch the trek last year, but pandemic lockdowns sidelined his plans. The new run of dates will kick off in Pittsburgh on July 6th, 2022.

Tickets are on sale now via RogerWaters.com . Those who held onto tickets for the 2020 dates will get an email with further information about the new dates. Those tickets will be valid for the new dates.

“This Is Not A Drill is a groundbreaking new rock & roll/cinematic extravaganza, performed in the round,” Waters wrote in a statement. “It is a stunning indictment of the corporate dystopia in which we all struggle to survive, and a call to action to love, protect, and share our precious and precarious planet home. The show includes a dozen great songs from Pink Floyd ‘s Golden Era alongside several new ones — words and music, same writer, same heart, same soul, same man. Could be his last hurrah. Wow! My first farewell tour! Don’t miss it. Love, R.”

When Waters announced the tour last year , he promised an all-new production, following his Us + Them and the Wall tours, that would be presented in the round.

When he was originally planning it, he had timed it to run up to the 2020 election. “[The new tour] will be even more political than Us + Them was — political and humane,” Waters told Rolling Stone in 2019. “We were listening to songs and looking at setlists today. We were talking about, what should we call it? I shouldn’t be giving this away, but I don’t give a shit because it will probably all change, but imagine the iconic helicopter that normally comes before ‘Happiest Days’ and ‘Brick 2’ — that noise that we all know and love — and imagine a megaphone, somebody abused this device before, I know — but, ‘This is not a drill.’ I thought that could be a good title for the show: This Is Not a Drill. The ruling class is killing us.”

Roger Waters Kicks Off 2022 Tour: Set List, Photos and Videos

Roger Waters began the first night of his 2022 This Is Not a Drill tour with a cheerful message projected onto the screens above the stage: “If you don’t agree with Roger’s politics, you might do well to fuck off to the bar right now.”

For the most part, the crowd at the PPG Glass Arena in Pittsburgh Wednesday night laughed, roared and whooped their tacit acknowledgment of the Pink Floyd co-founder’s advice.

While decidedly political, Waters’ first tour in five years is more than just a strident pulpit for his progressive (some prefer the word “radical”) views. Yes, This Is Not a Drill takes to task everyone from the past six U.S. presidents to rich oligarchies to foreign fascists. However, it also acts as a signal boost for both compassionate altruism and revealing aspects of Waters’ mythology.

You can see photos, the full set list and fan-shot videos of the show below.

Waters and his band performed in the middle of the PPG floor, surrounded by catwalks, stage extensions and an elongated hi-tech screen system above the musicians. The screen was used repeatedly for excellent dramatic (and political) effect, displaying short films, disturbing animation and archival footage of his first band. The proceedings began with a widescreen panorama of a skyline of dilapidated, semi-destroyed skyscrapers, best described as somewhere between such dystopian sci-fi classics as Blade Runner and I Am Legend . It was the perfect visual for Waters’ opening salvo, a lugubrious droning arrangement of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” performed by him and backing vocalists Shanay Johnson and Amanda Belair channeling some version of a celestial choir.

Watch Roger Waters' This Is Not a Drill Introduction Video

Watch Roger Waters Perform 'Comfortably Numb'

And that was only the beginning of an arresting evening filled with dynamic playing, personal history, political invective and one new, as-yet-unrecorded Waters composition. He accompanied himself on piano during “The Bar,” describing the song not as the place where naysayers who didn’t like his beliefs could go, but rather as a place where people with shared beliefs “can be better people for all our fellow human beings.”

That poignancy gave way to Pink Floyd’s cynical “Have a Cigar,” one of the best songs to ever smack down music industry egos. Then Waters (via typed narrative text on the screen) discussed the roots of his friendship with tragic genius and Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett . That then led to him describing a breakdown that led to the creation of the song “Wish You Were Here” and excerpts from the Barrett paean “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.” These personal moments would give way to the footage of Reuters journalists being killed via drone strikes, material that was leaked to the internet by Chelsea Manning and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. Waters was running both sonic and psychic roller coasters to his listeners in the hopes of consciousness- and/or hell-raising before breaking for a 20-minute intermission.

For the second set, Waters and his band tempered their headline-news warnings with fan favorites and more unlikely twists and turns. Donning a full-length leather duster and aviator sunglasses (and flanked by a faux security detail), Waters delivered a scathing take on Pink Floyd’s “In the Flesh,” ramming home the rock-star-as-fascist-despot role with great aplomb. A spirited version of “Run Like Hell” followed, with that crucial line (“ They’re gonna send you back to mother in a cardboard box, you better run! ”) still capable of turning your blood to Freon, decades after its release. Waters continued his activist awareness with passionate performances of “Deja Vu” and the pointed “Is This the Life We Really Want?”

Watch Roger Waters Perform 'Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2 + Part 3'

But fans who came to This Is Not a Drill with a great sense of the apolitical were still rewarded. The band delivered stellar versions of all the tracks on Side Two of both 1973's The Dark Side of the Moon and 1975's Wish You Were Here . Some people would think Waters would be eye-rolling his way through these fan-service gestures, playing songs older than everyone currently in the SoundScan Top 100. But Waters did not need to deny his past or come off cloying.

He commandeered guitarist Jonathan Wilson to sing the classic “Money” so he could put his bass on and get in the trenches with the rest of his backing band. Contemporary versions of “Us And Them,” the wondrously psychedelic instrumental “Any Colour You Like” and the FM-playlist staples “Brain Damage” and “Eclipse” were delivered with enough contemporary energy and wondrous musicianship that it didn’t come off like a cover band phoning it in quickly for free drinks and middle-aged divorcees at the bar, post-show.

Watch Roger Waters Perform 'The Bar'

After wrapping up the concert with “Two Suns in the Sunset” (Waters’ ode to the Doomsday Clock from Pink Floyd’s The Final Cut LP) and a reprise of “The Bar” segueing into “Outside the Wall,” Waters and band said farewell and played themselves offstage as a video crew followed them into their dressing room, projecting the exit onscreen in real time. Waters showed gratitude to both his touring crew’s professionalism and wherewithal in building the elaborate in-the-round set and to his audience for their continued dedication.

But it’s those fans who understand without question Waters’ passion and dedication to his craft. At 78, Roger Waters can stay at his home in the Hamptons with his wife and collect mechanical royalties from a career that’s been both lucrative and alluring for well over half a century. With the U.S. looking irredeemably polarized, Waters is either ambitious or audacious in his desire to wake the populace in the best way he sees fit. He doesn’t need to be traversing our highways spreading a message. After all, it's right there in the name of the tour.

Roger Waters Debuts “This Is Not a Drill Tour” with Stunning Visuals, Scathing Commentary: Review, Photos, and Setlist

Former Pink Floyd member also premiered a new song called "The Bar"

Roger Waters Debuts “This Is Not a Drill Tour” with Stunning Visuals, Scathing Commentary: Review, Photos, and Setlist

As the lights dimmed in Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena for the first show of Roger Waters ’ “This Is Not A Drill Tour” (get tickets here ), the former Pink Floyd member and his team made two requests:

1. “Please turn off your cell phone as a courtesy to the people around you. 2. “If you’re here because you like Pink Floyd but you can’t stand Roger Waters’ politics, fuck off to the bar.

That’s the tone that powered the night. Yes, Waters and his band played some of Pink Floyd’s greatest hits alongside some of Waters’ most breathtaking originals, and, yes, they played them all beautifully. And, yes, the visuals, which we’ll discuss in a moment, were stunning.

But after two years of tour delays stemming from a global pandemic and an endless string of controversial political headlines from around the world, “This Is Not a Drill” is a direct response to everything that’s gone wrong in recent years. And if you ask Roger Waters — the creative who wrote through the pained anguish within Wish You Were Here , penned the Orwellian tribute of Animals , and developed the landmark introspective concept album The Wall — there’s plenty to be upset about.

Throughout the course of his “This Is Not a Drill Tour” opener, Waters addressed everything from abortion rights to transphobia to America’s rampant and storied war crimes. If awareness sparks emotion, Waters is pissed.

The live show format is perfect for Waters and his band. Just as Pink Floyd built a reputation for elaborate and immersive live performances, Waters and his crew have developed a uniquely memorable experience. Relying heavily on an enormous cross-shaped divider capable of splitting the multi-directional stage into four different panels, the crew leveraged 12 different surfaces for projected images.

Roger Waters, photo by Brian Lima

It’s those projections that take the “This Is Not A Drill” show from good to great , allowing viewers to step deeper than ever into the psyche of the primary songwriting force from Pink Floyd’s golden age. The opener, Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb,” was reimagined as a dark funeral dirge backed by a city wasteland that’s long been lost and forgotten. During “Another Brick in the Wall,” the second song, violent demands for conformity flashed in enormous red and white letters.

In the third song, the full force of Waters’ political vitriol roared to the surface. While the scathing lyrics of “The Powers That Be” rang through the arena, the projections showed clips of police brutality while listing off many of the most internationally reported minority deaths in recent few years, including Pittsburgh’s Antwon Rose, Jr., the 17-year-old fatally shot by police in 2018.

During the next song, “The Bravery of Being Out of Range,” the projections moved systematically through each US presidential administration since Ronald Reagan, carefully outlining each individual’s own heinous war crimes. Waters may be a little older, and he might need a little more time to catch his breath between songs, but he’s still fighting against the same institutions and deep-rooted issues he’s railed against since the 1970s.

Roger Waters Performs Pink Floyd's 'Two Suns in the Sunset': Watch

“This Is Not a Drill is a groundbreaking new rock and roll/cinematic extravaganza, performed in the round, it is a stunning indictment of the corporate dystopia in which we all struggle to survive, and a call to action to LOVE, PROTECT and SHARE our precious and precarious planet home,” said Waters in a release. “The show includes a dozen great songs from PINK FLOYD’S GOLDEN ERA alongside several new ones, words and music, same writer, same heart, same soul, same man. Could be his last hurrah. Wow! My first farewell tour! Don’t miss it. Love R.”

Roger Waters Debuts “The Bar” at This Is Not A Drill Tour Kick-Off in Pittsburgh

Roger Waters Debuts “The Bar” at This Is Not A Drill Tour Kick-Off in Pittsburgh

Last night, Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters kicked off his This Is Not A Drill Tour at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. Rogers and his backing band tossed out a stockpile of Pink Floyd favorites, cuts from his solo work and debuted a new track titled “The Bar.”

Rogers and his crew–comprised of Waters, Robert Walter (keyboards), Jonathan Wilson (guitar),  Seamus Blake (saxophone), Joey Waronker (drums), Gus Seyffert (bass), and Dave Kilminster (guitar), Amanda Belair (backing vocals) and Shanay Johnson (backing vocals)– shared 23-songs for the much-anticipated tour kick-off which was originally scheduled for 2020 but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Waters production team addressed the current and controversial views towards Waters by sharing a written message on screens ahead of the performance that read, “If you’re one of those ‘I love Pink Floyd, but I can’t stand Roger’s politics’ people, you might do well to fuck off to the bar right now.”

Waters opened the show with an acoustic rendition of “Comfortably Numb” and continued with Pink Floyd covers “The Happiest Days Of Our Lives,” “Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2” and “Another Brick In The Wall, Part 3.” He followed with some of his solo work, playing “The Powers That Be” and “The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range.” After the electricity was clearly bouncing off the walls, Waters took a seat at the piano to formally welcome guests to the show, before sharing the debut of his song “The Bar.” He closed the first set of the evening with some of Pink Floyd’s most beloved songs, including “Have A Cigar,” “Wish You Were Here,” “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX)” and “Sheep.”

Rogers and company started the second set with a coupling off The Wall “In The Flesh” and “Run Like Hell.” He followed with his only songs of the evening from his 2017 LP Is This The Life We Really Want? “Déjà Vu,” followed with the project’s title track. Next came the bells of The Dark Side Of The Moon ‘s “Money,” on which Wilson handled lead vocals. They continued to play Side B of the 1973 album with “Us And Them,” “Any Colour You Like,” “Brain Damage,” and “Eclipse.” They followed the standout arrangement with “Two Suns In The Sunset,” which was followed by a reprise of “The Bar” before closing the show with “Outside The Wall.”

Rogers and company will continue the This Is Not A Drill Tour with a two-night run at the complete performance of  The Dark Side Of The Moon’s  second side was followed by  The Final Cut  standout “Two Suns In The Sunset.” Roger Waters capped the tour opener with a reprise of “The Bar” and “Outside The Wall.” The This Is Not A Drill Tour continues on Friday and Saturday at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Friday, July 8 and Saturday, July 9.

This Is Not a Drill is a concert tour by English songwriter Roger Waters . The tour, originally scheduled to take place between July and October 2020, was suspended after the COVID-19 pandemic advance, and rescheduled to take place in 2022. Waters first talked about a new live spectacle following his Us + Them Tour on a Rolling Stone interview in September 2019. [1] In 2021, he called the show his "first farewell tour". [2]

Background [ edit ]

In 2017, Waters released his fourth solo album Is This the Life We Really Want? , conceived as a radio play about a man and his granddaughter investigating why children are being killed in other parts of the world. [3] Waters described the play as "part magic carpet ride, part political rant, part anguish". [4]

To promote the album, Waters embarked on the Us + Them Tour , visiting the Americas, Europe and Oceania between May 2017 and December 2018. A portion of the show featured extensive anti-Donald Trump imagery set to songs released by Pink Floyd , [5] which led some attendees to boo or even walk out of the show. [6] Waters responded to the anti- Trump critics by saying, "I find it slightly surprising that anybody could have been listening to my songs for 50 years without understanding", and said to those critics if they didn't like what he was doing, "Go see Katy Perry or watch the Kardashians . I don't care." [7]

After finishing the tour, a film about it, called Roger Waters: Us + Them , was released. In September 2019, in an interview promoting the film, Waters talked to Rolling Stone about his plans for the future, where he first mentioned the main concept for a following tour:

It will be even more political than Us + Them was — political and humane. We were listening to songs and looking at set lists today. We were talking about, what should we call it? I shouldn't be giving this away, but I don't give a shit because it will probably all change, but imagine the iconic helicopter that normally comes before “ Happiest Days ” and “ Brick 2 ” — that noise that we all know and love — and imagine a megaphone, somebody abused this device before, I know — but, “This is not a drill.” I thought that could be a good title for the show: This Is Not a Drill. The ruling class is killing us. [1]

In the same interview, Waters stated the tour would only visit arenas, with no concerts held in outdoor venues, and it would visit cities in United States, Canada, "and maybe three gigs in Mexico City. And that’s all. I can’t go off around the world, and I don’t really want to either".

Development [ edit ]

In January 2020, Waters officially announced the tour, named This Is Not a Drill. "This tour will be part of a global movement by people who are concerned by others to affect the change that is necessary", said Waters in a video announcing the tour. "That’s why we’re going on the road. That’s why speak to each other in pubs. That’s why this conversation should be on everybody’s lips, constantly, the whole time, because it’s super important. So I hope you’ll all come to the shows." [5] The show will see him performing in a 360° stage for the first time. Originally, the final show on the United States was due to take place on October 3, 2020, exactly one month before the 2020 presidential election . [5]

On March 27, 2020, Waters posted a statement on his website and social media, announcing the postponement of the tour to the following year due to the coronavirus pandemic outbreak , declaring that the situation was a "Bummer, but if it saves one life, it’s worth it". [8] [9] [10] [11] In April 2021, tour dates in Canada and United States were announced to take place in 2022, [2] while the concerts in Mexico were announced later in June. [12] In a statement, it was specified that the show "includes a dozen great songs from Pink Floyd’s Golden Era alongside several new ones — words and music, same writer, same heart, same soul, same man". Waters has called This Is Not a Drill his "first farewell tour". [2] In November 2021, a new show in Monterrey, Mexico, was announced. In March 2022, 3 new shows were announced in the United States.

Controversies [ edit ]

In February 2020, following the showing of advertisements for the tour on some Major League Baseball platforms, Jewish organization B'nai B'rith ciriticized its decision of showing the ads and sponsoring the tour. The organization wrote a letter to commissioner Rob Manfred where they stated Waters’ views on Israel "far exceed the boundaries of civil discourse". [13] The controversy led the league to the decision to stop the running of tour ads in all its platforms and cutting ties to Waters. [14] Waters has supported the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in solidarity with Palestinians against Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories since 2011. [15]

This is not the first time Waters faces this kind of situation. In October 2016, Waters lost $4 million in sponsorship after American Express refused to fund his Us + Them Tour due to his anti-Israel rhetoric at a previous festival sponsored by the financial company. [16] In November 2016, Citibank joined American Express in cutting ties to Waters. [17]

Roger Waters is performing at the Amway Center in downtown Orlando, Florida on Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 8:00 PM.

George Roger Waters is an English musician, singer-songwriter and composer. In 1965, he co-founded the progressive rock band Pink Floyd. Waters initially served almost entirely as the bassist, but following the departure of singer-songwriter Syd Barrett in 1968, he also became their lyricist, co-lead vocalist, conceptual leader and occasional rhythm guitarist until 1983.

In 1990, Waters staged one of the largest rock concerts in history, The Wall – Live in Berlin, with an attendance of 450,000. As a member of Pink Floyd, he was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Later that year, he reunited with Pink Floyd bandmates Nick Mason, Richard Wright, and David Gilmour for the Live 8 global awareness event, the group’s only appearance with Waters since 1981. He has toured extensively as a solo act since 1999; he performed The Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety for his world tour of 2006–2008, and the Wall Live tour of 2010–2013 was the highest-grossing tour by a solo artist at the time.
