Blackpool pleasure beach reviews: insider insights and visitor experiences.

Trip.com

Loved it. I went on opening weekend and I was highly impressed. Managed to get on quite a few rides despite the long queues and even though the weather was awful, we had plenty of fun.Now the not so good points…I had to knock off one star as was quite let down at least two of the rides were closed and were not advertised closed on the website in advance, I get the reason for the flying machines as it’s old and probably doesn’t fare too well in windy conditions but was gutted my favourite ride the steeplechase was closed for unknown reasons. I was really looking forward to it. It stayed shut all day, was really quite disappointed by this.

user-icon

It is worth a visit, there are 145 kinds of amusement facilities, attracting 7 million tourists every year, the amusement facilities here are divided into several categories, you can buy different categories of tickets, if you book online in advance will be more cost-effective!

Things to do in blackpool.

Blackpool knows how to have fun. Its Pleasure Beach is a massive, sprawling theme park by the sea. The famous Blackpool Illuminations light up the seafront rain or shine, while Blackpool Tower is a glittering beacon for miles around.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach

Blackpool’s theme park exists on a large scale: 145 rides are spread across a 40-acres site, attracting 7 million visitors per year.

There are a variety of passes that let you cut the queues too. Thrillseekers should check whiteknuckle rollercoasters like The Big One, Revolution and Infusion – the UK’s first looping coaster suspended over water.

Those preferring a smoother ride might want to head to the classic Thompson Carousel or the Pleasure Beach Express train ride, while cartoon fans can join Spongebob and friends in Nickolodeon Land.

Blackpool Tower

While it may be roughly half the size of the Eiffel Tower, a trip to the top of Blackpool’s famous landmark is still a must. There’s a lot to do at many different levels of the tower, too. Start with a visit to the ghoulish Blackpool Tower Dungeon, where you can get lost in a mirror maze, take part in a court case or try Drop Dead, a suitably gory ride on the hangman’s noose.

Next, head to the magnificent Blackpool Tower Ballroom, a grand rococo venue that could have come straight out of Beauty and the Beast. Then head up to the Tower Eye to catch a 4D film about Blackpool’s history, before taking the elevator up to the observation deck with its heart-stopping glass floor.

SEA LIFE Blackpool

Because it would be strange to go all the way to the coast without seeing some marine animals, SEA LIFE is a must-visit. This aquarium has 2,000 marine creatures including sharks, rays, octopuses and sea horses. SEA LIFE also covers a variety of different habitats, including Blackpool’s own ecosystem to the mysterious depths of the ocean. When you’ve seen enough fins and flippers, enter the leafy Amazon rainforest area for turtles, chameleons and Poison Dart Frogs. Intrepid visitors can even don a snorkel and flippers and go diving with the sharks.

Sandcastle Waterpark

With a year-round temperature of 84-degree, Sandcastle Waterpark brings some much needed tropical heat to Blackpool all year round.

As the UK’s largest indoor waterpark, Sandcastle has 18 slides – including 4 especially created for thrillseekers. Montazooma is an Aztec-themed mat slide with 360° loops and back-to-back turns, while Aztec Falls plunges you in pitch darkness. Sandcastle Waterpark also set world records with Masterblaster, the world’s longest indoor rollercoaster waterslide, and Sidewinder, the world’s first indoor vertical waterslide.

Fancy a gentler ride? Check out the Ushi Gushi River Creek or the Dueling Dragons. For younger visitors, there’s an interactive adventure game and water cannons aboard the HMS Thundersplash.

Comedy Carpet

A permanent, free exhibit under Blackpool Tower, the Comedy Carpet is a huge mosaic of over 800 funny quotes, one-liners and classic catchphrases from comedy legends – many of whom have performed in Blackpool.

Comedy connoisseurs should look out for Morecambe and Wise, Alexei Sayle and quotes from television classics such as Blackadder, Fawlty Towers and Dad’s Army. Hollywood may have its Walk of Fame, but Blackpool unites visitors with a laugh and a joke. Take your time and see if you can find a favourite.

Madame Tussauds Blackpool

Get a selfie with a celebrity without infuriating their bodyguards at Madame Tussauds. Because they’re waxworks, you can discuss space with Brian Cox, pose with Freddie Mercury or put two fingers up behind Ed Sheeran’s head until your heart’s content.

Hardcore Coronation Street fans will be delighted to visit The Rover’s Return and hang out with stationary cast members old and new. Those looking to move up in the world might want to head for HRHs William and Kate.

Grand Prix Ride Blackpool Pleasure Beach: iconic attraction has closed

It was at the resort for over 60 years

Amy Houghton

Blackpool Pleasure Beach has officially reopened its gates after taking a short break over the winter months and getting some much-needed maintenance work. But it looks a little different.

As well as being rebranded Pleasure Beach Resort, visitors have noticed that a certain ride missing. After six decades, the park’s beloved Grand Prix Ride is no more. The race car ride saw visitors hop into a model car and speed off down a huge spiral track. It began life in 1960 as the Turnpike, with petrol powered cars, before switching to electric powered vehicles in 2002.

On the bright side, the park will be getting a new ride in its place. We’re yet to find out any details on what it will look like, though.

Why has the Grand Prix Ride at Blackpool Pleasure Beach closed down?

In short, the ride has closed because it’s being replaced – but that’s all we know at the moment.

Amanda Thompson, owner of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, tweeted: ‘To all Pleasure Beach fans, the Grand Prix will not operate this year as we are planning a new attraction. Don’t ask me any more questions about this, I will tell you when I have made the decision.’ You heard her.

Lost Blackpool Pleasure Beach rides and attractions that were loved by everyone

A s Blackpool Pleasure Beach kicks off for a new season, it was reported one of its iconic and longstanding rides is to close for good.

Once a park favourite, the Grand Prix ride is to close to make way for a new attraction . In a Facebook post, Everything Blackpool wrote: " Blackpool Pleasure Beach owner Amanda Thompson has confirmed the closure of Grand Prix to make way for a brand new attraction in the future.

"The ride has operated on the park since 1960 and was originally called the Turnpike. The cars were petrol powered till the end of the 2002 season before being modified to electric powered ones we see today."

The Blackpool Pleasure Beach ride that disgusted its inventor

Over the years, many of the rides and attractions we remember so vividly from our childhood will have been lost due to shake-ups, or having been there for decades, come to the end of their life.

So, to celebrate the Pleasure Beach rides we've loved and lost, Lancs Live has listed some of our favourites lost over time. This isn't meant to be a complete list of all the lost rides, so any you loved and feel should have been mentioned let us know in the comments below.

1. The Pleasure Beach funhouse

A slide, a spinning wheel, moving stairs, and more. Sadly, the five-storey funhouse burned down in 1991 after being built in the 1930s.

One of the longest indoor dark rides in the world, Valhalla replaced it in 2000.

2. The entrance to the Pleasure Beach - the Noah's Ark

Built between 1919 and 1936, the ark was a brightly-coloured decoration at the entrance to the park, until it was removed in 2008.

3. The Gold Mine

The Gold Mine opened in 1971, and was a fixture of the Pleasure Beach for 40 years, closing forever in September 2011 to be turned into the Wallace and Gromit Thrill-o-Matic attraction. The ride took guests through a maze of underground tunnels, where they could see miners hard at work.

Cyclone was a steel roller coaster that originally opened at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in 1974. It was relocated to Frontierland in Morecambe , changing its name to Stampede in 1987, and operated until 1998.

The coaster has since operated at Canvey Island Amusement Park and Killarney Springs Family Park. It's not known where Stampede is now.

5. Space Invader

Space Invader first opened in 1984 as the fourth steel coaster at the theme park. It was closed in 2003 and reopened in 2004 as Space Invader 2.

The ride closed in 2008 and was sold to Brean Leisure Park, where it has been known as Astro Storm since 2010.

6. Pepsi monorail

The nearly 1,600 metre long monorail opened at the park in 1966. The ride had four trains and two stations.

Following its closure in 2012, its cars were stored and have since been offered for sale by the park.

7. Drench Falls log flume

Drench Falls was the first log flume to operate in Europe, opening in 1967. Billed as the theme park's first great thrill ride since the installation of the coasters, it was the longest flume ride in the world at that time, measuring 2,349ft long.

After decades of service, the ride closed in 2006 and was replaced by steel rollercoaster, Infusion.

8. The Whip

The Whip is believed to have first operated at the Pleasure Beach in 1921. When it was removed in 2008 it was the oldest fairground-style ride at the park.

9. Turtle Chase

Originally called Tumble Bug when it opened in 1935, the rollercoaster opened in 1935. It closed in 2005 and the plot sat vacant until the construction of Icon.

10. Trauma Towers

Originally The Haunted Hotel, Trauma Towers was a themed funhouse and haunted attraction. It opened in 1980 as a walk-through, themed as a derelict hotel taking visitors through several haunted rooms.

In 2009, the attraction was closed and left standing but not operating. In January 2018, the entire building was demolished.

11. Wild Mouse

The Wild Mouse was a wooden roller coaster which opened in 1958. It was one of only four remaining wooden Wild Mouse coasters left in the world as of the end of the 2017 season, and was held in very high regard as one of the finest and most extreme examples of Wild Mouse coasters.

Sadly the ride was closed and dismantled in 2018.

The "Star Shape" ride was built by German company Zierer in 2004, and closed in 2011. The ride featured six ‘gondolas’ which would reach a height of 100 ft and spin in three different directions at speeds of up to 60 mph.
