Kanha National Park Travel Guide

kanha jungle safari charges

Kanha National Park has the honor of providing the setting for Rudyard Kipling’s classic novel, The Jungle Book . It’s rich in lush saal and bamboo forests, lakes, streams and open grasslands. The park is one of the largest national parks in India , with a core area of 940 square kilometers (584 square miles) and surrounding area of 1,005 square kilometers (625 square miles).

Kanha is well regarded for its research and conservation programs, and many endangered species have been saved there. As well as tigers, the park abounds with barasingha (swamp deer) and an extensive variety of other animals and birds. Rather than offering one particular kind of animal, it provides an all-round nature experience.

Location and Entry Gates

In the state of Madhya Pradesh , southeast of Jabalpur. The park has three entrances. The main gate, Khatia Gate, is 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Jabalpur via Mandla. Mukki is nearly 200 kilometers from Jablpur via Mandla-Mocha-Baihar. It's possible to drive through the park's buffer zone between Khatia and Mukki. The Sarhi Gate is nearly 8 kilometers from Bichhiya, on National Highway 12, about 150 kilometers from Jabalpur via Mandla.

Khatia Gate leads into the park's buffer zone. Kisli Gate lies a few kilometers ahead of it, and leads into the Kanha and Kisli core zones. The park has four core zones -- Kanha, Kisli, Mukki, and Sarhi. Kahna is the oldest zone, and it was the park's premium zone until the concept was abolished in 2016. Mukki, at the opposite end of the park, was the second zone to be opened. In more recent years, the Sarhi and Kisli zones were added. The Kisli zone was carved out of the Kanha zone.

While most of the tiger sightings used to take place in the Kanha zone, these days sightings are becoming more common all over the park. This is one of the reasons why the premium zone concept has been abolished.

Kanha National Park also has the following buffer zones: Khatia, Motinala, Khapa, Sijhora, Samnapur, and Garhi.

How to Get There

The nearest airports are in Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh and Raipur in Chhattisgarh. Travel time to the park is about four hours from both, although Raipur is closer to the Mukki zone and Jabalpur is closer to the Kanha zone.

When to Visit

The best times to visit are from November to December, and March and April when it starts getting hot and the animals come out in search of water. Try to avoid the peak months during December and January, as it's very busy. It can also get extremely cold during the winter, particularly in January.

Opening Hours and Safari Times

There are two safaris a day, starting from dawn until late morning, and mid afternoon until sunset. The best time to visit the park is early in the morning or after 4 p.m. to spot the animals. The park is closed from June 16 to September 30 each year, due to the monsoon season. It's also closed every Wednesday afternoon, and on Holi and Diwali.

Fees and Charges for Jeep Safaris

The fee structure for all national parks in Madhya Pradesh, including Kanha National Park, was substantially overhauled and simplified in 2016. The new fee structure became effective from October 1, when the parks reopened for the season.

Under the new fee structure, foreigners and Indians pay the same rate for everything. The rate is also the same for each of the park's zones. It's no longer necessary to pay a higher fee to visit the Kanha zone, which used to be the park's premium zone.

In addition, it's now possible to book single seats in jeeps for safaris.

The safari cost at Kanha National Park consists of:

  • Safari permit fee -- 1,500 rupees for a whole jeep (seating up to six people), or 250 rupees for a single seat in a jeep. Children under five years of age are free.
  • Guide fee -- 360 rupees per safari.
  • Vehicle hire fee -- 2,200 rupees per jeep. Jeeps can be hired from the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation at the Khatia entrance, or the Kanha Safari Lodge at the Mukki entrance.

Making a Safari Booking

Safari permit bookings for all zones can be made online on the MP Forest Department website. Single seat bookings are only offered online for core zones though. Book early (up to 90 days in advance) because the number of safaris in each zone is restricted and they sell out fast!

When booking online, you will only be charged the permit fee. This fee is valid for one zone, which is selected when making the booking. The guide fee and vehicle hire fee are to be paid separately at the park before undertaking the safari and will be distributed equally between the tourists in the vehicle.

At the time of booking, you will see the number of seats remaining in each zone. You may also see that some options are displayed with a "W". This means that you'll be placed on a waiting list and will only get a confirmed permit if it clears. If this doesn't happen at least five days before the start of your safari, your booking will be automatically canceled and you'll be given a refund.

Hotels who have their own naturalists and jeeps also organize and operate safaris into the park. Private vehicles aren't allowed into the park.

Other Activities

The park's management has introduced a number of new tourism facilities. Night jungle patrols take place through the park from 7.30 p.m. until 10.30 p.m., and cost 1,750 rupees per person. Elephant bathing takes place in the park's Khapa buffer zone between 3 p.m. and 5.p.m. daily. The cost is 750 rupees entry fee, plus 250 rupees guide fee.

There are nature trails in the buffer zones that can be explored on foot or bicycle. One of the most popular ones is the Bamhni Nature Trail near the park's Mukki zone. Both short walks (two to three hours) and long walks (four to five hours) are possible. Don’t miss experiencing in a sunset at Bamhni Dadar (a plateau that’s also known as sunset point). It provides a mesmerizing view of the park’s grazing animals as the sun disappears down the horizon.

Elephant rides are no longer generally available to the public. It is possible to apply in advance to the forest department but approval isn't guaranteed and won't be provided until the day before.

Where to Stay

The Forest Department provides basic accommodations at forest rest houses at Kisli and Mukki (1,600-2,000 rupees per room), and at Khatia Jungle Camp (800-1000 rupees per room). Some have air-conditioning. To book, phone +91 7642 250760, fax +91 7642 251266, or email [email protected] or [email protected]

There's also a wide range of other accommodations, from budget to luxury, in the vicinity of Mukki and Khatia gates.

Kipling Camp , near Khatia Gate, has its own pet elephant that guests can ethically interact with .

Not far from Khatia Gate, boutique Courtyard House is delightfully private and serene. For a relaxing escape, Wild Chalet Resort has reasonably priced budget cottages by the Banjar River, a short drive from Khatia. The cottages at family-operated Pug Mark Resort are recommended as an inexpensive option, near Khatia Gate. If you want to splurge, you'll love Pugdundee Safaris Kanha Earth Lodge. Alternatively, mid-range Kanha Village Eco Resort is an award-winning responsible tourism project.

Near Mukki, Kanha Jungle Lodge and Taj Safaris Banjaar Tola are pricey but worth it. If the thought of a secluded and rejuvenating and stay with organic farming interests you, try the very popular Chitvan Jungle Lodge.

Also near Mukki, award-winning Singinawa Jungle Lodge showcases the region's tribal and arts culture, and has its own museum.

Singinawa Jungle Lodge: A Unique Tribal Experience

Named Most Inspirational Eco Lodge of the Year in the 2016 TOFTigers Wildlife Tourism Awards, stunning Singinawa Jungle Lodge has its own Museum of Life and Art, dedicated to tribal Gond and Baiga artisans, on the property.

The lodge is located on 110 acres of jungle bordering the Banjar River. While many lodges focus on safaris into the national park, Singinawa Jungle Lodge provides its guests with their own naturalist and offers many experiences that enable guests to immerse themselves in the wild.

Accommodations

The accommodations at the lodge are secluded and spread out through the forest. They consist of 12 very spacious rustic stone and slate cottages with their own porches, a two-bedroom jungle bungalow (The Wildernest), and a four-bedroom jungle bungalow (The Perch) with its own kitchen and chef. Inside, they're individually decorated with a fusion of wildlife paintings, colorful tribal art and artifacts, antiques, and items handpicked by the owner. Massive soothing rain showers in the bathrooms, plates of delicious handmade tiger pugmark cookies, and Indian jungle tales to read before sleeping, are a highlight. The king size beds are super comfortable and the cottages even have fire places!

Expect to pay 19,999 rupees per night for two people in a cottage with all meals, services of a resident naturalist, and nature walks included. The two-bedroom bungalow costs 33,999 per night, and the four bedroom bungalow costs 67,999 rupees per night. Rooms in the bungalows can be booked separately. See rate details here .

Safaris into the national park are extra and cost 6,000 rupees for a group of up to four.

Museum of Life and Art

For the lodge's owner and managing director, Mrs. Tulika Kedia, establishing the Museum of Life and Art was a natural progression of her love for and interest in indigenous art forms. Having founded the world's first dedicated Gond art gallery, Must Art Gallery in Delhi, she has devoted significant time to acquiring artworks from different tribal communities over the years. The museum houses many of these important works, and documents the culture of the indigenous Baiga and Gond tribes, in a space that's accessible to tourists. Its collection includes paintings, sculptures, jewelry, everyday items, and books. The accompanying narratives explain the meanings of the tribal art, significance of tribal tattoos, origin of the tribes, and the intimate relationship that the tribes have with nature.

Village and Tribal Experiences

In addition to exploring the museum, guests can connect with the local tribes and learn about their lifestyles first hand by visiting their villages. The Baiga tribe is one of the oldest in India and they live simply, in villages with mud huts and no electricity, untouched by modern development. They cook with primitive implements, cultivate and store their own rice, and brew potent toddy from the flowers of the mahua tree. At night, members of the tribe dress themselves in traditional attire and come to the lodge to perform their tribal dance around the fire for guests, as an additional source of income. Their transformation and dance is captivating.

Gond tribal art lessons are available at the lodge. Attending the local weekly tribal market and cattle fair is also recommended.

Other Experiences

If you're keen to become further acquainted with the tribes, you can bring children from the tribal village that the lodge supports with you on safari into the national park. It's an exciting experience for them. Anyone who's feeling energetic can also go cycling into the interior of the reserved forest to a tribal Baiga village with beautifully painted mud huts and panoramic views.

Singinawa Jungle Lodge undertakes conservation work through its dedicated foundation and you can join in the daily activities, visit a school that its adopted, or volunteer work on projects.

Children will love their time at the lodge, with activities specially tailored to different age groups.

Other experiences include day trips to Phen Wildlife Sanctuary and Tannaur river beach, meeting a community of tribal potters, visiting an organic farm, birding around the property (115 species of birds have been recorded), nature trails, and walks to learn about the forest restoration works on the property.

Other Facilities

When you're not having adventures, get a relaxing reflexology treatment at The Meadow spa overlooking the forest, or laze by The Wallow swimming pool spectacularly surrounded by nature.

It's also worth spending time in the atmospheric lodge itself. Spread over two levels, it has two large outdoor terraces with lounge chairs and tables, a couple of dining rooms, and a indoor bar area. The chef serves up a delicious variety of Indian, pan Asian and Continental food, with Tandoori dishes being the specialty. He's even putting together a cookbook featuring local ingredients.

Before you leave, don't miss stopping by the lodge's shop where you can pick up some souvenirs!

Kanha National Park: A safari guide’s tips on the best time to visit, permits, hotels

By Sharanya Kumar

Kanha National Park A safari guides tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

The warning call of a sambar deer rents the air. Something’s approaching, and there’s a palpable shift in the energy of the forest around you. A low growl rumbles somewhere between the trees and moments later, you see her—a tiger emerging from the mist before you—her movements slow and measured, her coat bright orange against the green of the jungle. Paralysed with fear and awe, you watch. Welcome to Kanha.

A misty sunset in Kanha National Park

A misty sunset in Kanha National Park

A spectacular sal and bamboo forest with rolling grasslands and meandering streams, this is the original Kipling country so fondly written about in  The   Jungle Book . It was in this forest in the Ramayana that King Dasharata shot his arrow at Shravan Kumar, mistaking him for a deer. With its sprawling meadows and varied forests, home to a number of endangered species, this tiger reserve is known for its scenic beauty and historical significance.

However, planning a trip to Kanha requires some amount of research on hotels, permits, zones, jeeps and guides . To save you the trouble, we talked to  Harpreet Singh,  the head naturalist and lodge manager at Kanha Earth Lodge, who has worked at several national parks in India before becoming a naturalist in Kanha in 2014. Here, he shares insider tips to plan your safari right before your trip to Kanha.

What makes Kanha National Park special?

“It’s difficult to explain the beauty of Kanha; you need to see it to believe it. You could spot a male swamp deer putting grass on his antlers in an effort to look more handsome for his lady love. You could catch rare migratory birds that make a stop at Kanha just for a few days before continuing their journey onwards. A stunning coat of frost envelopes the forest in winters, and as spring approaches, the sal trees grow a fresh, verdant cover of leaves. Every month, every season in the park is an entirely different experience.”

Singh has had some incredible sightings in the park which inspired him to become a wildlife photographer. “I was inspired to pick up a camera after I saw a tiger hunting and dragging her kill across the road in front of me—and I’ve kept at it ever since. My best photograph is of a tiger sitting high on a tree. It was a young female named Mohini who had climbed up six or seven feet. Her paws gripping the tree and her tail swinging below, she looked right into my camera.”

“Perhaps the most special part of the park was the legendary tiger, Munna,” says Singh. He was the longest-living tiger in Kanha until he passed away at the age of 19 last year. Munna was known for the unique black markings on his forehead that spelt out C-A-T, with the letters P and M underneath. “We used to call him the Prime Minister of Kanha. He ruled every corner of the park, and was loved and respected by everyone who knew him.” Singh once caught a glimpse of Munna just outside his lodge, a moment he will never forget. “We spent many years with him, but never once felt afraid of him. He was like a member of our family. Ask anyone at Kanha about Munna, and they will spend all day regaling you with his stories. He was that kind of a tiger.” Munna’s bloodline remains in Kanha today.

What to spot at Kanha National Park?

Kanha is famous mainly for two species, both of which are endangered. The first is the Royal Bengal tiger; there are 120 tigers in Kanha at the moment. The other is the barasingha, also known as the hard-ground swamp deer. This swamp deer is the state animal of Madhya Pradesh, and is endemic to Kanha. The species has since been shifted to other parks, like Satpura and Van Vihar in Bhopal, but it's best spotted in Kanha National Park. Apart from these two, the wildlife at the park includes the chital, sambhar, sloth bear, barking deer, wild dog, wild boar and leopard. You can also spot the gaur, or the Indian bison, four-horned antelope, blue bulls (nilgai) and blackbucks.

There is also an abundance of birds at Kanha, such as shama, barbet, minivet and the Indian paradise flycatcher—the state bird of Madhya Pradesh. A variety of eagles can be spotted—the crested-hawk eagle, the crested-serpent eagle and the grey-headed fish eagle. There are many different types of vultures, including the king vulture and the long-billed or Indian vulture. If you’re lucky, you may spot a passage migratory vulture called the cinereous vulture. There are water birds and grassland birds alike, as well as the lovely scaly-breasted and tri-colour munias.

What are the guide’s telltale spotting rituals?

“There are many little clues that indicate that a tiger sighting is on the horizon. First is the warning call. When herbivores sense predators nearby, they make frenzied warning calls. But here’s the fascinating part: each animal has a different warning call for different predators. Langurs make one warning call to warn against leopards and another call for tigers. This is because leopards can climb trees, while tigers cannot, so the langurs need to alert each other to escape accordingly. It is on the basis of these warning calls that guides get an understanding of which predator lurks in the shadows of the forest.”

Pug marks are another great indication. “When pug marks are freshly made, they have sharp edges, which become fuzzier over time. Male tiger pug marks are square with oval-shaped front toes, while female pug marks are more rectangular with egg-shaped front toes.” Depending on the territory in which the pug marks are discovered, the guides can also identify which tiger made them. “Every tiger has its own pattern of walking in the forest. That’s how we track them.”

However, Singh gently reminds us that it is open wildlife and not a zoo. After all, you can never fully predict the movements of a wild animal like a tiger. “But have faith—your guides are extremely knowledgeable about the forest and the animals, and will do their best to ensure you have excellent sightings. If tigers are the only thing on your mind, you may miss the other sights the forest has to offer.”

Barasingha

What’s the best time to go to Kanha National Park?

The park is open from October to June, but if you really want to enjoy the forest, then winters—from November to March—are the best. “When you’re driving through the grasslands of the park in the winter, seeing an animal moving in the mist is simply mesmerising. It also makes for excellent photos. Seeing the forest in the winter is a totally different experience.”

However, the chances of spotting a tiger are higher in the summer. The visibility is slightly better in summer because the jungle is dry. Due to water scarcity in the forest, the animals are likely to come out to the watering holes. “Having said that, I love seeing tigers in winters because their coat is bright orange, and it looks amazing against the green background of the forest. Their coats fade in the summer and turn yellow-ish, which helps them camouflage in the jungle,” says Singh.

Leopard

Bird-watching enthusiasts, remember that sightings depend on which month you visit the forest. There are migratory birds, which fly down to central India due to snowfall in the Himalayas during the winter months (around November to February). On the other hand, some birds, like the white-browed bulbul, fly up from the south of India. Some are passage migratory birds, which you can only spot in Kanha for a few days in the year before they move on.

How many safaris should you do during a 3-night stay?

At least three to four, but you can do up to five or six safaris if you truly wish to enjoy the park. “Sometimes one safari is enough, and sometimes even three or four safaris are not enough.” Singh believes that it’s all about the right time, right place and good tracking on the part of your guide.

Flying fox

What are the safari slots at Kanha?

There are two safaris a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. The timings for these change from month to month. Kanha National Park is typically open from sunrise to sunset. The chances of sightings are about the same in morning and afternoon slots. However, you get to spend more time in the forest in the mornings. Evening safaris are shorter than morning safaris.

October: Morning - 6am to 11.30am; evening - 3pm to 6pm November: Morning - 6.15am to 11.30am; evening - 3pm to 5.45pm December: Morning - 6.30am to 11.30am; evening - 3pm to 5.30pm January: Morning - 6.45am to 11.30am; evening - 3pm to 5.45pm February: Morning - 6.30am to 11.30am; evening - 3pm to 6.15pm March: Morning - 5.45am to 11.30am; evening - 4pm to 6.45pm April: Morning - 5.45am to 11.30am; evening - 4pm to 6.45pm May: Morning - 5.30am to 11.30am; evening - 4pm to 6.50pm June: Morning - 5.30am to 11.30am; evening - 4pm to 7pm

Besides the morning and evening safaris, there is also a full-day safari, which costs around 9-10 times the normal safaris. Tourists on the full-day safari can enter the park 15 minutes before it opens, and come out 15 minutes after it closes. They can go to any of the zones at will, and are not restricted to any one zone. This is the preferred safari option for photographers.

How to book a safari permit at Kanha and how much does it cost?

You can book permits and safaris on the official  website . You can make up to six safari bookings in one month. For Indians, on weekdays, the permit fee is Rs2,450 for one ticket, and on weekends, it is Rs3,050. For foreigners, it is nearly double that amount. The fees go up during holidays such as New Year, Christmas and Diwali.

How to book a jeep and guide at Kanha?

Each zone has a particular number of jeep safaris available. You can choose a zone when booking online, depending on availability. There are also a limited number of tatkal safaris available a day before.

Jeeps need to be booked on arrival at the Gypsy Union counter outside the park, which costs Rs3,000. While verifying your ticket at the forest ticket counter, you will be assigned a guide. Alternatively, you can be accompanied by naturalists from your hotel at an additional charge.

Which zones are the best at Kanha National Park?

There are four tourism zones in the park—Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi. Kanha and Mukki are all meadows and flatlands. Sarhi has mixed forests and is rather rocky. Kisli’s terrain is a combination of the other zones, with sal forest patches and grasslands. Birds can be easily spotted in all the zones.

While herbivore sightings generally stay static across zones, Singh notes that tiger sightings tend to change annually. “The last two years were very good for tiger sightings in the Kanha zone. A female with four cubs had settled in that zone, and she was sighted almost every single day. This year, though, the Mukki zone is doing better for tigers. But this could change, and your guide will be aware of the best zones.”

What are the best hotels in Kanha?

Kanha Earth Lodge ( doubles from Rs24,000* ) is run by Singh and sits right at the border of the park’s buffer zone. Besides safaris, visit the local markets close by, and hike up to the sunset point for an excellent view of the national park. At walking distance from the park is the Banjaar Tola by Taj ( doubles from Rs30,000* ), where you can go glamping in tented suites, soak in stunning views of the Banjaar river, and relish the local cuisine. Shergarh ( doubles from Rs15,000* ) is only a five-minute drive from the park, offering rustic comforts and an authentic forest experience. Boutique lodge Flame of the Forest ( doubles from Rs24,000* ) promises to be the wildlife fairytale of your dreams, with its charming cottages and perfect proximity (a 20-minute drive) to Kanha National Park. Situated in Khatia village, a two-minute drive from the park, is Soulacia ( Doubles from Rs10,000* ), which offers a great mix of deluxe rooms, independent cottages and luxury tents.

Besides jeep drives, what else can you do in Kanha?

Besides jeep safaris, one can do guided nature walks, cycling tours and village visits. The forest department also conducts walks into the buffer area. (The buffer area is in the periphery of the core forest area, and typically has villages and other human activity.) You can book tickets for this at the forest entry point, where they will assign a guide.

There is also a night safari from 7.30pm to 10.30pm, which takes place only in the buffer area, not in the core area. No flashlight is allowed because it can disturb the animals. “It’s less a night safari, more night patrolling,” says Singh. Highly nocturnal animals can be sighted, especially porcupines and sloth bears. While these are also seen during the day, the chances are higher in the evening and nighttime. Singh adds that the sloth bear is the only species that never hibernates. They can be seen any time of the year. They may be slow, but they are able to survive the winter. As for birds, you may spot some species of owls and nightjars.

About 35km from the Mukki zone is the Shravan Chita, where it is believed that Shravan Kumar’s pyre was lit. Visitors claim that to this day, no grass grows over that particular spot. There is also the Kanha Museum maintained by the forest department, which is a great way to engage with the history of the park. Those who have an entry permit for the morning safari in the Kanha zone can visit the museum. However, it is closed for the evening safari.

Kanha and Bandhavgarh Tiger Safari Tour

Popular tigers at kanha national park.

As of today, the  tiger population in India  has risen above the 3000 marks. Kanha National Park alone houses 83 adult tigers and 42 cubs. Among the many tigers, the chief attraction is the Royal Bengal Tiger – the largest of tiger subspecies. These majestic wild cats can weigh up to 500lbs and measure close to 3 meters.

This has only increased Kanha’s popularity rankings and encouraged similar practices across the many neighboring national parks in Madhya Pradesh. Three tigers you must look out for are Umarpaani, Dhawajhandi, Umarjhola, MV3 and cubs, Dhawajhandi Cubs, Jamun Tola and more. They are the most popular of the tigers and are very often seen due to them being rather comfortable with humans. Read more about the lives of the famous tigers of Kanha .

Zones in kanha national park.

National Parks are typically divided into multiple zones to make safari tours across it more convenient and easier for tourists. You can access Kanha National Park through one of three gates – Khatia, Mukhi or Sarhi.

The four core zones of the park is usually from where your expedition will begin. Jeep Safaris and Canter Safaris will lead you to the inner reaches of the park called – Buffer Zones, which are typically connecting points between the Core Zones.

For a while, the Kanha Zone was the most popular to visit due to its wildlife density. But this has changed over time, as conservation efforts improved the numbers across the park.

Apart from Core and Buffer, another prime zone is the Reserved Zone – This area of the park is closed off to tourists, as it focuses mainly on wildlife conservation.

Kanha Jungle Lodge is located in the vicinity of its namesake national park in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Two independent villas and 18 cottages at the lodge are on offer as accommodation here. All accommodation units feature private balconies, where you may relax and gaze endlessly at lush forests. The units come with the option of single, twin or king-size double beds, depending on your requirement. The rooms and cottages have big windows by the beds for you to lie down and observe what goes on around the area. Attached bathrooms with hot and cold water, and showers are provided in each cottage and room. The bathrooms too have large windows for you to look at the beautiful scenery of the lodge and the jungle. Environment conservation is among the foremost aims of the management of the property, and it claims that no trees were cut during its construction process. The premises have a variety of plants and trees, which become natural nesting paradises for hordes of butterflies and birds. Kanha Jungle Lodge has been constructed in such a way that one room has a tree growing through it, making it look more like a tree house. A large circular gazebo with thatched roof serves as the common dining hall. Savour hot and delicious Continental and Indian dishes with other guests in the gazebo. You may also relish your meals on tables kept in the open in the middle of thick Sal forests. The chirping and twittering sounds of birds will be the natural music for you to listen to, while you eat and drink. In the centre of the lodge campus there is a spacious courtyard to relax during the day and to enjoy a bright bonfire in the evening. Get a book and read it, while laying and resting on the hammock in the courtyard. As the sky begins to don the dark veil of night, gaze at the uncountable stars that light it up. An experienced astronomer will educate you about what stars and constellations are visible from here. Following this wonderful and informative session, get a chance to get a closer look at celestial bodies through a quality telescope and just admire mother nature. You can make your stay here better by taking cooking classes on regional cuisine, and in the art of draping the sari as the locals do it. Solar panels provide all the electricity here and much of the cooking is done on solar cookers. The campus also has a garden of medicinal plants and its own farms, where natural fertilisers are used to grow food. A wildlife safari at Kanha is the best activity to engage in while you are staying at this property. Kanha National Park, which the establishment is located near to, is inhabited by a number of animals and birds.

How to reach?

By Train: You may come by train till Gondia, which is 123 km from the reserve, but a better choice would be to book train to Jabalpur. The latter city is located at an approximate distance of 129 km from the national park, and trains to here are available from across India. From Gondia, a drive of about 2 hours will get you here, while from Jabalpur, you will need to drive for around 2 hours 15 minutes, approximately. By Air: You may come by flights from many Indian destinations to Jabalpur. For an even better air connectivity, book flights to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport or Swami Vivekananda Airport. The former is in Nagpur, about 250 km away while the latter is in Raipur, located roughly 273 km from the park. Both the above-mentioned air transit points can be reached from Mumbai and New Delhi, easily. Season: Kanha National Park opens its gates for tourists on October 15th and closes them on June 30th, every year. The peak season for tourism here, which is governed by the climate of Central India, is between October and March. Most wildlife enthusiasts choose to come here to take a wildlife safari at Kanha between the months of November and March as the passing monsoons make the forests lush and the reservoirs overflowing with water.

kanha jungle safari charges

Is it advisable to take the safari from the hotel?

If not, then please tell me what is the cost of booking an exclusive jeep safari at Kanha, core zone, from the MP government online portal.

Also please let me know of any factors that I should be aware of before booking a safari at Kanha.

' class=

Please note that from Oct 1, 2021, the safari rates have increased. The current rates are as follows:

(i) Core zone : ( Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi)

full vehicle permit fee per gypsy is Rs. 2450 on weekdays and Rs. 3050 on weekends and 5 days in and around New year 2022.

single seat sharing safari permit fee per person is Rs. 410 on weekdays and Rs. 510 on weekends and 5 days in and around New year 2022.

(ii) Buffer zones: ( Khapa, Sijhora, Khatia)

On all days Rs. 1250 per vehicle.

The proposed gypsy fee for core zone safari is Rs 3000 per ride and the Guide fee is Rs. 480 or Rs. 600 (depending on the guide category which is allocated at the time of safari entry).

So, on weekdays the core zone safari for a full vehicle permit becomes Rs. (2450+ 3000+600) = Rs. 6050 per ride and on weekends it becomes Rs. 6650.

' class=

Are these fees (permit+gypsy+guide) for the entire day or only for one of morning/evening safaris?

Only for single safari

Thanks Utkarsh.

Are the rates same (gypsy+permit+guide fee) same for Bhandhavgarh too?

There are basically three categories of jungle safari in Kanha –

Normal Safari – There are 6-seater Jeeps available in Kanha for jungle safari and only 2 canters (an open bus with 20 seats). The canter and jeep safaris are available in two shifts only. Kanha morning safari is usually longer and lasts till 11 AM, while Kanha evening safari is shorter and fewer jeeps are permitted.

Note – Jeeps are mainly booked on an exclusive basis in Kanha National Park. You can also book jeep safari on an individual seat basis. You have to go to the entry gate because jeeps won’t pick you up at the hotel. Tatkal Safaris – These safaris can be booked in premium zones. There is no specific number of jeeps available in this category. In this quota, you can book only those jeeps which were cancelled. The tatkal quota opens at 5 PM for the next morning and afternoon. Keep in mind that the cost is a bit higher than advance booking or normal quota jeeps.

Premium Safaris – There is no concept of half-day safari in Kanha. The national park offers only full-day safaris in the premium category. You can explore all zones in this category but it is a bit costly. You also need to contact the Field Director for special permission.

Jeep safari in Kanha is available from October 16 to June 30. The park remains closed for tourists during monsoons.
