Ultra-luxury RV maker Bowlus is marketing its cheapest and smallest trailer to younger travelers — see inside the $165,000 Rivet

  • Ultra-luxury RV maker Bowlus's new Rivet is its smallest and cheapest travel trailer.
  • The $165,000 trailer can go off-grid, off-road, and be remote-controlled, the company says.
  • Bowlus is targeting younger buyers with its new premium RV model .

Insider Today

Bowlus is known for its ultra-sleek, ultra-luxury RVs with price tags that can rival a house.

To some roadtrippers, a recreational vehicle that costs more than $300,000 might be a little out of the price range.

But if you fall into this camp, Bowlus has a counteroffer: the new Rivet, its smallest and cheapest travel trailer.

In early March, the California-based RV maker unveiled the new "rugged" model with all-terrain tires, remote-control capabilities, and a more manageable starting price of $165,000.

Compared to Bowlus’s two other models, this new tiny home on wheels is being sold at a steep discount.

premium travel transalpino

The company's most expensive RV, the Volterra , starts at $310,000.

That's almost double the cost of the newer and smaller Rivet. The lower price is intended to open Bowlus to more customers, Geneva Long, the company's CEO, told Business Insider.

And yet, compared to other travel trailers, the Rivet's isn't cheap either.

premium travel transalpino

New 2024 travel trailers currently start at about $13,000 with RV dealership Camping World, although these models aren't nearly as shiny as Bowlus' aluminum trailers.

Like Bowlus, legacy RV maker Airstream loves cladding its trailers with aluminum. And depending on the model, the latter could be a more economical option: Its Trade Wind, which is three inches shorter than the Rivet, starts at $129,400.

However, Long says Bowlus' manufacturing methods — like the in-house production of its RVs' steel frames and more than 70% of its parts — justify its price. Plus, she says Bowlus' products are durable: No need to "flip" one every few years "as a standard in the industry."

Bowlus' customers can range from young families to retirees, Long said.

premium travel transalpino

Long hopes Bowlus can appeal to younger buyers with the rollout of the less expensive Rivet.

It's a strategic decision: There's been an influx of Gen Z and millennial RVers . And they're pining for an upgrade: 84% of 18-to-34-year-olds who own an RV said they intend to buy another one in the next few years, according to a 2021 survey from trade group RV Industry Association.

Long said many of these younger buyers crave RVs that offer what the Rivet has: off-grid and off-road capabilities.

premium travel transalpino

But it's not the first to explore this off-road route.

Over the last few years, several legacy RV makers have launched products with similar capabilities, some more rugged than the Rivet.

This includes Airstream's Interstate 19X camper van was built for boondocking. The Mercedes Ben Sprinter-based RV starts at $199,940.

But for travelers who'd rather prioritize affordability, Winnebago says its $64,421 Micro Minnie FLX travel trailer can go off-grid for five days with the help of power systems like 400-watt solar panels and a 320-amp-hour lithium-ion battery.

And if they're desperate to relive their childhood memories of playing with remote-controlled Hot Wheels could scratch that itch with the Rivet.

premium travel transalpino

Who needs toy cars when you have an RV? The new travel trailer can be driven into campsites or parking spots using a handheld remote — although it'll add another $10,000 onto the base cost.

With amenities like a remote control, Rivet was designed to fit in the “premium” RV segment.

premium travel transalpino

This isn't Bowlus' first attempt at a more affordable build.

In early 2023, it unveiled another travel trailer, Heritage , at the same price point as the Rivet. However, the model was discounted "because Bowlus only likes to offer three models at a time," Long told Business Insider in an email.

The Rivet would’ve had some similarities to the Heritage, like its 25.25-foot length and 3,500-pound weight.

premium travel transalpino

But unlike its predecessor, the new build is ready to go off-grid and onto dirt roads: The RV comes with a three-inch lift kit and all-terrain tires.

Traditional home luxuries have all been condensed into the new 6.7-foot-wide trailer.

premium travel transalpino

The RV has four distinct spaces: a bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen.

Travelers can enjoy home-cooked meals at the living room's dining table or sofa.

premium travel transalpino

The space also doubles as a second bedroom: Both sides can convert into extra beds.

No more "going outside": The trailer also has a shower and cassette toilet.

premium travel transalpino

Water in the bathroom and kitchen is sourced and dumped into the trailer's 19-gallon freshwater, 21-gallon gray water, and 4.5-gallon black water tanks.

All of these amenities are powered by the RV's eight-kilowatt-hour lithium battery, 3,000-watt inverter, and up to 660 watts of solar.

premium travel transalpino

To achieve full solar capabilities, travelers must purchase the $875 130-watt "solar suitcase" upgrade.

With it, the trailer's power system could sustain most of its amenities — like the refrigerator and laptop chargers — off-grid indefinitely, Long said.

However, it can only support about 16 hours of air conditioning, she said, noting that it's common for travelers to use it for about four hours a day. (If needed, the RV can be charged with a separate generator.)

For companies like Bowlus, now is potentially a good time to grow a travel trailer business.

premium travel transalpino

Shipments of motorhomes — which include the previously ultra-popular camper vans — dipped 26.5% in January compared to the same time in 2023, according to data from the RV Industry Association.

In the same period, shipments of travel trailers ballooned by 27.3%.

RV sales have since slumped — or “normalized” — following their massive spike during the COVID-19 pandemic.

premium travel transalpino

But Long says Bowlus was unaffected by this otherwise industry-wide dip.

At the end of 2023, the RV maker added five dealerships to its network, which now spans across the US.

Travelpro Platinum Elite 29" Review

Our Verdict

Compare to similar products, our analysis and test results.

The Platinum Elite fits the bill as a full-size piece of checked luggage. Measuring from the floor, it stands 32 inches in height, making it the tallest bag in our flight crew. Its main compartment also boasts the most volume of any bag on our list.

Performance Comparison

In terms of capacity, the Platinum Elite rolls into town big and beautifully.

Its 117-liter main compartment offers the most packing volume of any bag in our lineup, and it also provides one of the most comprehensive packing systems available in the luggage industry.

Our favorite feature is the bag's fold-out suiter, a folding compartment for hanging clothes like dresses, suits, formal wear, or any other clothing that needs special care. It minimizes wrinkling and tucks away on the backside of the main flap.

Two mesh garment panels let you compress some or all of what you pack in the main compartment. They double as mesh bags for toiletries or small items like socks or gloves. A zip-out, plastic pocket on the right-hand side of the main compartment provides a safe place to store any liquid toiletries. Another pocket on the left helps subdivide your smaller items further.

All told, the Platinum Elite provides a nice amount of storage, and that's just on the inside. Two large external pockets complete the package. They're nice for stashing a few extra layers, a magazine, and maybe your wallet. But they are also large, running the full length of the suitcase, so they won't keep smaller items very organized or within easy reach.

Being the biggest also has its drawbacks. Weighing in at 12.2 pounds, the Platinum Elite ranks among the heavier bags on our list.

This added weight could potentially impact your travel plans, as most domestic and international airlines enforce a standard 50-pound weight limit for checked luggage, with fees assigned to bags that weigh more. In short, despite having an enormous amount of capacity, you may not be able to use it all depending on what you pack and how much it weighs.

Ease of Transport

Despite its massive size, the Platinum Elite maneuvers quite well, earning it top marks in this metric. Our testers specifically felt it rolled smoothly, hopped stairs and curbs well, and stayed balanced when being lifted by its grab handles.

When it comes to terrain, most luggage wheels do most of their cruising on smooth airport floors, with occasional rides on concrete or metal escalators. However, for this metric, we wanted to push our Platinum Elite to its limits on dirt, gravel, and grass. During our off-road adventures, we feel its wheels performed as well as could be expected, with just enough clearance to plow through nearly any terrain. Loaded with a max weight of 50 pounds, it certainly didn't tackle the great outdoors like a high-end SUV, but we were pleased nonetheless — although we do feel the wheels should be just a little taller.

Embedded magnets allow the Platinum Elite's 2-inch tall, double-wheeled spinners to simultaneously align in any direction you're traveling and from whatever side of the bag is leading. This simple but very effective technology is like an autopilot for your luggage, keeping the bag right next to your side as you run, stroll, or pull it on two wheels over a cobblestone path. This auto-alignment feature really shone during our rolling tests.

When it came to using brute force, this bag was not the easiest to lift into vehicles or schlep up a flight of stairs (or three). This is mostly due to the Platinum Elite's massive size. We admit, when fully loaded, it's one bulky sack of potatoes. That said, it does have two strong grab handles that are made to endure repeated lifting, tugging, and yanking. We often opted to lift and carry our bag by its top handle because it was easier than spinning it onto its side and carrying it horizontally. Although very sturdy and balanced, our only complaint about both handles is their size. Each is a little small and constrictive, so lifting this bail of hay for long periods can be a little uncomfortable.

Construction Quality

Above-average fabrics, plastics, zippers, handles, and buckles earned the Platinum Elite impressive scores for its overall quality of construction. We feel this bag is built for extensive travel and is ready to serve you for the long haul.

Indestructible is certainly an adjective we hope to give any bag we test, but in reality, the airline checked luggage life can often be a bumpy road, so unbreakable is not always true to life. However, do expect a certain level of brawn from our best overall bag, and the Platinum Elite did not disappoint. Its tough nylon exterior withstood our tumble and drop tests with only minor scuffs and scratches.

After being pushed down stairwells and dropped from ledges, we doused our Platinum Elite with several minutes of hose water to see how resistant it was to H20. After being drenched from all sides, we were pleased with this bag's performance. The exterior pockets were slightly damp on the inside, but the main compartment of the bag was basically dry.

Design and Functionality

It certainly isn't the trendiest bag on the block, but what the Platinum Elite lacks in trendy style, it makes up for in function. Simply put, this bag has some of the best packing features of almost any bag on the market, all at a price that is hundreds less than luxury suitcases that offer the same features.

We gave the Platinum Elite high scores in this metric for several reasons. It has unbeatable storage capacity, thoughtfully placed pouches, pockets, and compartments throughout, and top-notch auxiliary features (i.e., zippers, wheels, and trolley handle). Lastly, we feel its capstone feature is its exceptional packing system that can accommodate a wide variety of clothing and accessories.

Should You Buy the Travelpro Platinum Elite 29"?

Frequent flyers who require the ability to pack uniforms, formal wear, or other important clothing will enjoy the many storage and organizational features of the Platinum Elite . Although somewhat expensive, its price point is more appealing than luxury luggage brands that offer many of the same features. So if you take to the air often for work or pleasure and desire a bag that will accommodate your particular packing needs, this suitcase is certainly worth considering.

What Other Suitcases Should You Consider?

If you want a softshell bag that offers a lot of room but doesn't dent your bank account, we suggest the SwissGear Sion Softside Expandable Roller 29" , although the Sion is not as sturdy as the Platinum Elite , and isn't built for routine extensive international travel. For an upgrade in durability and a top-tier design, consider the premium Briggs & Riley Baseline Large Expandable Spinner . Lastly, if you like the features of the Platinum Elite but don't need its full capacity, we suggest looking into the Travelpro Platinum Elite 25" or the carry on-sized 21-inch version .

  • THE BIG IDEA

Hundreds of tiny arachnids are likely on your face right now

Scientists aren’t sure what microscopic face mites do, but they know where to find them: in the pores and hair follicles of most adult humans’ faces.

intricate living quarters of weird creatures with all modern conveniences.

At this moment, hundreds or thousands of tiny eight-legged animals are nestled deep in the pores of our faces—my face, your face, your best friend’s face, and pretty much every other face you know or love. In some sense, they’re our closest companions.

These animals are mites—tiny arachnids, related to spiders and ticks . They’re too small to see with the naked eye, and too small to feel as they move about. Not that they move much: Face mites are the ultimate hermits, likely living most of their lives head down inside a single pore. In fact, their bodies are shaped like the inside of a pore, evolution having long ago reduced them to narrow plugs topped with eight absurdly tiny legs.

mites eggs nesting by the rote of hair.

Face mites were first discovered in the human ear canal in 1841; soon thereafter they were found in the eyebrows and eyelashes. Since then, we’ve learned that they live not only among towering forests of brows and lashes but also in the savannas of short, fine hairs all over our bodies, save the palms and the bottoms of feet. The oil-producing pores in which those hairs sit are particularly dense on the face—as are the mites that live in them.

Perhaps more surprising, our pores are home to at least two different species of mites, both of the genus Demodex. The shorter and stubbier of the two is D. brevis; it’s shaped roughly like the kind of club a cartoon caveman might carry, and it prefers to nestle deeply into sebaceous glands. The other is D. folliculorum, which is longer and skinnier and hangs out in hair follicles, closer to the skin’s surface.

Both mite species are such homebodies that scientists have a hard time observing them, either in captivity or in the wilds of the human face. As a result, we know little about their lives. One of the few things that seems certain is that face mites spend their entire lives on the human body, which implies they conduct all their day-to-day business there.

This means that mites are, by necessity, having sex on our faces, most likely emerging in the dark of night to find a mate since they’re averse to bright light. They’re also eating whatever is on hand inside a pore, presumably dead skin cells and oily sebum.

It also suggests that face mites are pooping in our faces. For a long time, scientists thought that face mites lacked an anus—wishful thinking, perhaps—and that waste just built up inside their bodies until they died. But in 2022, researchers released photographs taken with a microscope that revealed a face mite’s teeny, tiny anus. Apart from the giggles the discovery inspired, it dispelled the idea that a sudden, large release of waste upon a mite’s death might be responsible for causing skin inflammation.

Mites have been unfairly blamed for a variety of skin conditions, the researchers reported in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution . Instead of being harmful parasites, the scientists say, Demodex genetics suggest that the mites are evolving toward a symbiotic relationship with humans. In fact, this could be their ultimate undoing. As the mites become more dependent on their human hosts, they’re losing the genetic diversity their species needs to survive. At some point, the researchers write, “the survival of the species over evolutionary time might be in question.”

Both mite species are such homebodies that scientists have a hard time observing them, either in captivity or in the wilds of the human face. As a result, we know little about their lives.

Because these mites   are so cryptic, most of us will never see one. But biologist Rob Dunn and colleagues have made breakthroughs in understanding them—so I made it a mission to visit Dunn’s laboratory at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. I hoped not only to see my own face mites but also to learn more about these strange beasts. Dunn got interested in studying face mites, he tells me, precisely because they’re so mysterious. How could something actually live on our bodies without being noticed?

Megan Thoemmes wraps her long red hair into a bun and pulls on gloves. Like me, she’s steeling herself for what’s next: squeezing mites out of my pores. Thoemmes is just finishing her Ph.D. in Dunn’s lab, so she’s a pro at extracting face mites. But she warns me there’s a good chance we won’t find any.

A better way to collect Demodex, Thoemmes tells me, is to put a drop of cyanoacrylate glue (aka superglue) on a person’s face and stick a glass microscope slide to it. When the glue dries, you peel it off (it’s not as painful as it sounds, she claims) and the glue pulls everything out of the pores, including the mites, all stuck together in a pore-shaped clump. The lab’s record is finding 14 mites in a single pore.

face mites under microscope.

On this morning, Thoemmes couldn’t find any superglue, so we’re using the old-fashioned method: scraping out sebum with a stainless steel laboratory spatula. I’m nervous that I’ve driven five hours to see nothing more than a close-up of the gunk in my pores. Thoemmes leans in and scrapes, firmly and steadily. A minute later, she shows me that the spatula holds a healthy smear of translucent face oil; she scrapes it onto a slide, and under the scope it goes.

Thoemmes adjusts the microscope with the deftness of someone who has done it thousands of times. After a few seconds, she mutters, “I think I found one.” She looks again. “Yes, I did!” We both squeal with joy. Even better, my mite is alive. I watch its tiny legs wiggle in the bright light.

After we take photos of my prized former face resident, Thoemmes scans the slide looking for more. Slowly, she starts counting. “Two, three … oh, I think I may have found a brevis !” She’s quiet for a long moment. “Eight mites,” she announces—six D. folliculorum and two D. brevis. That’s a lot, Thoemmes tells me diplomatically. She usually finds one or two in a face scraping, if any. I decide to consider myself above average, in a good way.

Thoemmes has one other way to find face mites: using their DNA. When Dunn’s group analyzed the DNA in sebum samples, they found face mite DNA in every single person tested over the age of 18 (versus just 14 percent of people via face scraping). In 2014 they published evidence that face mites are ubiquitous in humans. Further DNA research has revealed that face mites have evolved so closely with their human hosts that at least four distinct lineages of mites mirror our own—those with European, Asian, Latin American, and African ancestry.

One of Dunn’s colleagues, Michelle Trautwein of the California Academy of Sciences , is continuing to study this diversity. Having sampled mites on people from more than 90 countries, she hopes to sequence the entire face mite genome, opening new avenues of research. We might learn how the mites have evolved alongside us, she says, and a look at their genes could help us understand their physiology despite the difficulty of growing them in the lab.

The scientists who discovered Demodex living on humans in the 1800s saw them as potential pests or medical problems, and that attitude continued for more than a century. (Because Demodex numbers were found to be greater in people with rosacea—a skin condition that produces redness on the face—some dermatologists have assumed that face mites cause the condition.)

Now, though, our view of face mites is shifting. If virtually everyone has them, either we’re all infested or that’s not the right word to describe their presence. Even their link to rosacea might not be what it first appeared to be, Thoemmes suggests: What if it’s the other way around? Maybe the inflammation and increased blood flow related to rosacea create conditions favorable to face mites. In other words, larger face mite populations could be a symptom of rosacea, not a cause.

The scientists who discovered Demodex living on humans in the 1800s saw them as potential pests or medical problems. Now, though, our view of face mites is shifting.

What’s more, as science has come to view the human body as an ecosystem—home to diverse microscopic flora and fauna—it’s not clear that Demodex mites should be considered harmful parasites. Mites might even help us, as do the “good” microbes that live in our guts ; they could be eating harmful bacteria in our pores, along with dead skin and sebum, or secreting antimicrobial compounds. We and our mites might be in a symbiotic relationship: We feed them pore gunk, they help with the housekeeping.

As for finding my own face inhabited by Demodex mites, I feel lucky to have seen them. I hope they’re up to something good. And as I wait for science to reveal more about these microscopic squatters, I’m proud to proclaim that I’m mighty mitey.

book cover with green pictures of human skull, body parts, and animals.

How I learned to love the weird

To me, nothing is more fun than going for a hike and turning over a fallen log to see what slithers out. After all, you never know what you’ll see. That’s why I love writing about science—it’s like turning over an infinite series of logs. While reporting for my new book, Gory Details , not only did I get to encounter my own face mites, but I also peeked behind the scenes of a maggot-growing operation and ingested a number of surprisingly delicious insects. I’m drawn to the gross, the creepy, the taboo. (If it’s not polite to talk about over dinner, I’m definitely in.) Why? Well, I’ve found that when I look more closely at whatever rattles me—death, disease, the mites on my face—science makes it a little less scary. It’s the reason I’ve written a whole book of these stories, and why I’m always on the hunt for more. —EE

Biden visits Michigan county emerging as the swing state's top bellwether

SAGINAW, Mich. — Hurley Coleman Jr.’s parents were drawn to Michigan from the South by the promise of middle-class jobs in the booming automotive industry, an origin story shared by many African American families in Saginaw.

Mass layoffs beginning in the late 20th century precipitated a dramatic decline in Saginaw’s population and economy, accompanied by a sharp rise in political turmoil within the city and throughout the region around it. This unrest peaked in 2016, mirroring the trend set off by economic stress in many Rust Belt cities , when the area voted Republican for the first time in decades and helped Donald Trump win the state.

“There was unrest in so many corners, in so many ways and it just happened that you had a candidate who was irascible enough to be able to tap into that unrest,” said Coleman. “There are a lot of people who still have that unrest, but they’re paying attention now.”

Turning Saginaw County blue again in 2020 — by a margin of 303 votes — contributed to Joe Biden’s success in securing the critical “blue wall” states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, all pivotal in Trump’s previous victory as well. Leaders in both parties have said that it will be next to impossible for either presidential candidate to win the White House this year without winning Michigan.

Biden, who traveled to Saginaw on Thursday to meet with supporters and volunteers, understands its importance.

“Our democracy’s at stake” Biden told the group that packed the front porch of a Saginaw city council member’s home to meet with him. “I really mean it.”

Later, Biden sat down with a Michigan family at a local public golf course. The original plan had been for him to go golfing with a father and son duo who had themselves bonded over the game, but heavy rain washed out that idea.

With the campaign season heating up, the president has made intimate conversations with families and small groups to discuss policy matters most impacting their lives a set part of his travels around the country.

The visit was part of a two-day swing through Wisconsin and Michigan that started Wednesday as the president looks to create momentum for his reelection campaign after clinching the Democratic nomination on Tuesday night.

“President Joe Biden knows that if there is a place in America that he can tell his story to a people that need to hear it, Saginaw is that typical place,” said Coleman, a pastor who is planning to help Biden in his reelection bid.

Saginaw, a Democratic stronghold, is encircled by predominantly Republican areas within the larger county. Described as a microcosm of the entire state, Saginaw County is the only Michigan county to have voted for the winning presidential candidate in the last four elections. In that respect it has largely replaced Macomb County north of Detroit as the go-to destination for political consultants and media looking to take the temperature of what might well be the ultimate swing state, with Macomb sliding steadily further into the Republican camp.

The Saginaw area boasts a large number of union-affiliated voters, a demographic that Biden has targeted in his reelection campaign. He has received multiple key union endorsements even as Trump lays claim to being the candidate of choice for working people despite many union leaders saying his first term showed otherwise.

The 44,000-person city at the heart of the county is also home to a significant Black community, comprising 46% of Saginaw’s residents. Energizing this demographic could be pivotal in November as Biden’s campaign navigates challenges in other regions of the state.

“I think that the president recognizes the importance of getting into a community as diverse as Saginaw and having the conversation and having the face-to-face time with folks,” said Michigan Democratic Party chair Lavora Barnes.

Over 100,000 Democratic voters in Michigan opted to vote “uncommitted” in the state’s Feb. 27 primary in what had been pushed by activists as a protest vote against Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza . Top Biden advisors, both from the campaign and the White House , have traveled frequently over the past several months to places like Dearborn, a Detroit suburb with the nation’s highest concentration of Arab Americans, in their efforts to win back what had been a reliably Democratic constituency.

But some Michigan Democrats in recent weeks have cautioned the party about overlooking restlessness within a significantly larger and politically influential demographic: Black voters.

Biden’s support among Black voters has waned considerably since he assembled his winning coalition four years ago, when he was backed by 91% of Black voters nationwide, according to AP VoteCast.

His approval rating among Black adults is 42% in the latest Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, a substantial drop from the first year of his presidency. Biden also is working to energize Black voters in the key swing states of Georgia, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

Wayne County Executive Warren Evans was among the 13% of Democratic voters who voted “uncommitted” in Michigan’s primary, but for a different reason than the one pushed by activists. He said he withheld his support to make a point to the Michigan Democratic Party that they are “not doing the things that they need to do to engage significant portions of the African American community.”

“We don’t see these programs and things that are talked about trickling down to us,” said Evans. “We don’t feel invested in. The philosophical stuff that you might hear in a speech, we’re not feeling that.”

Saginaw resident Jeffery Bulls shares Evans’ sentiment, opting not to vote at all in the state’s primary rather than vote “uncommitted.” Once a Democratic voter, Bulls said that both Biden and Trump have proven to be “more of the same.” He said he “probably will be skipping that top spot on the ballot” in November.

“We look around our community and 10, 20, 30 years go by and the same blight is here, the same joblessness is here, the same issues are here,” said Bulls. “Nothing has changed. That starts to click after a while and then you get cynical.”

The city of Saginaw’s poverty rate of nearly 35% is more than double Michigan’s average of 13%, as per the latest U.S. Census data. Average income in the city is also half that of the state’s average, though unemployment in the county has declined steadily since Biden first took office.

While Black voters are unlikely to support Trump in significant numbers in November, a lack of turnout could prove just as fatal for Biden’s reelection campaign. In 2016, Trump won Michigan by fewer than 11,000 votes, a thin margin attributed in part to reduced turnout in predominantly Black areas like Detroit’s Wayne County, where Hillary Clinton received far fewer votes than Barack Obama did in previous elections.

Biden reclaimed much of that support four years ago, when he defeated Trump in Michigan by a 154,000-vote margin, but he has work to do. Detroit, which holds a population that is nearly 78% Black, saw a 12% turnout in the Feb. 27 primary, almost half that of the 23% total turnout in the state.

Biden’s team is keenly aware of the pushback his reelection has encountered in certain minority communities in Michigan. Thursday’s visit is Biden’s second in six weeks, and his team is establishing over 15 field offices across Michigan, including Saginaw.

The campaign has been “working to ensure that Black Michiganders are aware of all the promises made and kept by” Biden, said Eddie McDonald, senior adviser for Biden-Harris in Michigan, in a statement. He added that the campaign is “not taking a single voter for granted — especially when the stakes are this high.”

“The fundamental choice in this election is between Joe Biden, who is fighting to make life better for Black voters, and Donald Trump, who drove up Black unemployment, tried to rip away health care access, and attempted to slash funding for HBCUs,” said McDonald. “That difference is stark and we’re going to make sure Michiganders know it.”

What Benefits Do Premium Economy Cabins Offer?

T he premium economy sector has become increasingly popular recently and certainly bounced back following the pandemic. There have been some notable entrants to the premium economy game in recent years, as well as some highly-anticipated newcomers in 2024.

Business-like perks at affordable prices

The premium economy concept aims to offer many of the luxuries of business class without being too prohibitive in costs. While the experience differs vastly between carriers and even between aircraft in the same fleet, overall, customers in the cabin can expect several of the following:

  • More legroom and wider seats
  • Superior seat quality
  • Additional baggage allowances
  • Extras like blankets, pillows, and amenity kits
  • Better quality service
  • Priority boarding and check-in
  • Improved meals

Notable premium economy products

While cabin preference is a matter of personal choice, some airlines have attracted more praise than others for their premium economy cabins..

Finnair's highly-rated cabin

The flag carrier of Finland is one of the more recent to debut new seats, having introduced its new cabin in the spring of 2022. Its premium economy cabin seats 26 passengers, with a seat featuring memory foam cushions, a deep 8-inch recline, what the airline describes as a 'waterfall leg rest,' and a 6-way headrest. Each seat provides around 50% more space than one of Finnair's economy seats.

The area also features dedicated storage for laptops and small personal items and a large metal meal tray for work and dining. Premium economy customers enjoy a wide selection of beverages throughout the flight, a three-course in-flight meal served on chinaware from Finish designers, and a light meal will be served before landing.

Both business and leisure travelers will be able to benefit from the universal power ports and in-flight entertainment. Each seat features USB A, USB C, AC power, and wireless device charging. The redesigned in-flight entertainment system features 13" wide screens, comparable to a full-size laptop.

Emirates A380 and B777 retrofits

Middle Eastern carrier Emirates announced its premium economy product in December 2020 as part of a massive retrofit program and rolled out its first equipped planes in late 2022. The seats offer a pitch of up to 40 inches, a width of 19.5 inches, and the seats recline eight inches. They feature a six-way adjustable headrest and extending leg rest to form a cozy recliner. The seats are constructed of stitched cream leather, accented by motorized window blinds and the wood-style paneling on the sidewalls to give the cabin a private jet-type appearance.

There is ample overhead storage and additional under-seat storage in all but the bulkhead row. The middle armrest holds both a small area large enough for a drink or book and a larger tray table that folds out for working and eating. However, getting the tray table out of the armrest is impossible when the seats are reclined and passengers are required to share a power outlet.

Star Alliance premium economy options

SWISS International Air Lines , the flag carrier of Switzerland, revealed it would be installing a premium economy product on all 12 of its Boeing 777-300ER long-haul aircraft. The seats feature a hardshell design that enables them to be fully reclined at no inconvenience to the passenger seated behind and without affecting the 15.6-inch at-seat screen.

Flyers will also enjoy noise-reducing headphones and a new amenity kit, which uses kraft paper and paper pulp to cut down the use of plastics. Premium economy guests also receive a refreshing elderberry welcome drink, a choice of three hot in-flight meals served on china tableware, and discounted access to the SWISS Business Lounges at Zurich and Geneva airports.

Star Alliance carrier Lufthansa's premium economy is found only on international flights and laid out in a 2-3-2 configuration, with 18-32 seats in the fleet. These seats offer up to 50% extra legroom compared to economy. Fellow Lufthansa Group Austrian Airlines features a spacious 2-2-2 layout of premium economy seats, giving each passenger direct aisle access. The seats are two inches broader than their regular economy counterparts and have a pitch of 38 inches.

Notably, the armrest between each pair of seats is six inches wide, giving passengers significantly more elbow room than could be expected in the economy class. Passengers also receive a complimentary amenity kit with travel accessories, three or four-course meals, and two pieces of check-in luggage.

Virgin Atlantic luxury perks

Virgin Atlantic's Boeing 787 Dreamliner includes a designated snack bar for premium customers that offers a constantly refreshed selection of organic olives, pretzels, chocolates, and various snacks.

Onboard the carrier's Airbus A350, the premium economy seats measure 18.5" in width, 2.5" smaller than the Boeing 787-9s. The pitch and recline on the seats are the same, but slimmer leather seats were chosen for this cabin, resulting in less padding and the standard footrest in front.

Soft products such as the amenity kits and meal service appeared comparable across both aircraft. Virgin also rolled out premium economy on its growing A330neo fleet, which Simple Flying got a good look at in the summer of 2022.

5 Of The Best Premium Economy Products In The World In 2023

Us premium economy cabins.

Delta Air Lines' Premium Select cabin has undergone a retrofit with seats similar to the first class seats on the Airbus A220. The product will remain available on Delta's future fleet additions, including the A330neo and A350-900. Premium Select's recent enhancements include improved meal options, the aforementioned new seat, and fresh amenity kits.

Fellow US carrier United Airlines joined in by updating its remaining Boeing 767-300ERs with a dedicated international premium economy, branded as United Premium Plus, retrofitted across its long-haul fleet. The airline also plans to offer the product onboard its upcoming Airbus A321XLR aircraft. Perks include superior charging options, complimentary alcoholic beverages, discounted United Club entry, and more.

American Airlines first introduced premium economy in 2016 and is clearly impressed with its performance. The carrier will increase premium economy capacity by 45% within the next few years, with its 787-9 and A321XLR fleet set to arrive in force during this time.

Qatar Airways is a holdout

One major global airline is refusing to join the premium economy revolution. Qatar Airways has repeatedly reiterated that it is not interested in launching premium economy on its flights. The airline's former Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr Akbar Al Baker, spoke exclusively to Simple Flying about the airline's reasoning, citing the quality of the economy product already offered to customers:

“I’m not going for premium economy. Qatar Airways provides passage at reasonable prices to my passengers, giving them equal, or even higher comfort than the premium economy.
