The Empire State Building is a huge Art Deco skyscraper in the centre of Manhattan. It has 102 floors, and when it opened it was the tallest skyscraper in the world.

The building is primarily used as office space by a wide variety of companies, as well as serving as a popular tourist attraction. There are shops and eateries on the ground floors, as well as observation decks you can visit on the 80th, 86th and 102nd floors.

What is the Empire State Building Made From?

The Empire State Building is constructed from a steel frame with a limestone facade. The use of steel frames combined with the invention of elevators is what made it possible to build skyscrapers to such dizzying heights, and the technique is still used in skyscraper construction to this day.

Why is it Called the Empire State Building?

The Empire State Building derives its name from the nickname given to the State of New York, which is the Empire State.

How Tall is the Empire State Building?

The Empire State Building is 1,454 feet (443.2 meters) high, measured to the very tip of the building. The roof is 1,250 ft (381 m) high.

When it was built it was the tallest building in the world, a title it held until the World Trade Centre buildings were finished in 1970.

Today it is only the seventh tallest building in the city, and only in the top 50 worldwide. However, it is still the most well known of New York’s impressive skyscraper collection, even if it is no longer the tallest.

Driving to the Empire State Building

We would definitely recommend against driving to the Empire State Building. Traffic in Manhattan is always busy and parking, if you can find any, is likely to be expensive.

Of course, if you do have a car and wish to park, there are options. You can see nearby parking structures and parking lots with this link .

If you drive, we recommend booking a parking spot in advance to be sure of a spot. We’d also suggest parking for the day as this will work out more cost effective, and then using public transport to get around to visit any other sights.

Do you Have to Pay to Visit the Empire State Building?

If you wish to visit any of the exhibits or observation decks at the Empire State Building, then you will need a ticket. See the next section for details of ticket pricing.

Of course, you can visit the outside of the building, as well as the ground floor dining options and shops for free.

Pricing for the Empire State Building varies depending on the experience you want, with ticket prices ranging from $44 all the way up to $500 for an adult. Prices are correct as of April 2023.

  • Main Deck access includes access to the observation deck on the 86th floor, as well as all the exhibits on the 2nd and 80th floors.
  • Top Deck access includes the above, as well as access to the 102nd floor observation deck.

As well as the two different areas, you can also pay for more premium experiences and add-ons. These include

  • Express tickets which allow you to skip the security lines and elevator lines.
  • Guided tours, which are either small group or private
  • Tickets for access to the tower at sunrise
  • Lunch or Dinner at one of the sit-down restaurants on site
  • A ticket that lets you visit twice on the same day, once in the daytime and once at night, to see the city at different times of day.

Here are the prices for the main ticket types. These prices are taken directly from the official website and are accurate as of April 2023. Children under 6 are free for all ticket types.

Note that the prices on the official site do not include any service fees or taxes, which are added at checkout. There is currently a $2 convenience fee per ticket, plus around 9% tax per ticket to add to the below prices when buying from the official site.

  • A Main Deck ticket costs $44 for an adult, $38 for a child (6-12) and $42 for a senior (62+).
  • An Express Ticket to the Main Deck costs $84 for all visitors. This includes priority skip the line access through the security line and elevators

In addition to the main tickets above, there are some additional tours and experiences, which are priced as follows:

  • AM/PM Experience – $64 for an adult, $54 for a child (6-12). This ticket is the same as the Main Deck ticket but allows you to return after 8pm and visit the observatory deck after dark.

Where to Buy Empire State Building Tickets?

There are a number of options for purchasing Empire State Building tickets.

First, you can buy entry tickets in person on-site. You’ll find the ticket machines after the security line on the second floor. We’d generally advise against buying entry tickets on site as it’s an unnecessary line that you can skip by purchasing online instead. In addition, current rules state that tickets must be purchased in advance.

We recommend instead that you buy your tickets from GetYourGuide here . They are an authorised ticket seller, and tickets are normally the same price or sometimes slightly cheaper than the official site once the taxes and convenience fees are taken into account.

Tickets booked via GetYourGuide also usually have the advantage of being refundable up to 24 hours in advance of your visit, unlike the tickets on the official website which are nonrefundable. However, always check the ticket description before purchase to check the policy.

Tickets are sent to your e-mail and you can either display them on your phone for scanning, or print them out.

They have a number of ticket options:

  • This ticket is the most popular option for visitors, and includes access to the 2nd floor exhibition, 80th floor, and 86th floor observation deck. Also known as the standard Main deck ticket. It does not include 102nd floor access, but you can upgrade the ticket on site if you wish at either the 2nd floor or 86th floor. You can also pay a little bit more for the express version. Click here to buy this ticket.
  • This AM/PM experience ticket gives you the same entry as the main deck ticket in the day, and also allows you to return after dark so you can see the city at night. Click here to buy this ticket.
  • This sunrise experience ticket gives you early access to the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building for sunrise. Tickets are limited to 50 per sunrise, meaning this is the best way to get the Empire State Building observation deck almost to yourself. After sunrise, you’ll get to visit the 2nd floor exhibits.
  • This VIP Guided Tour Experience . You can book either a small-group guided tour or the red-carpet VIP private tour experience with celebrity green room access, drinks and snacks.

If you want to visit the 102nd floor, you will either need to upgrade your ticket on site, or buy the 102nd ticket from the official site here .

When comparing prices against the official site, be aware that a convenience fee of $2 is added to every ticket, and the prices shown do not include tax.

Attraction Passes that Include the Empire State Building

As with many cities around the world, there are a number of attraction passes for New York City which include free or discounted admission to some of the top attractions in the city. I’ve put together a comprehensive guide to New York Attraction passes , but here’s a quick list of the ones which include free entry to the Empire State Building.

Note that generally these passes just include standard entry to the Main Deck, so whilst they let you skip the ticket line, they are not express passes and they do not allow access to the 102nd floor observatory.

You can however pay for an upgrade on site for access to the the 102nd floor observatory if you wish.

  • New York CityPASS – this includes access to the Empire State Building, with the added benefit that you can return and get same night admission after 10pm. It also includes access to five other major attractions in the city
  • The New York Pass – includes standard skip the ticket line entry to the Empire State Building as well as over 100 other attractions in the city
  • New York Sightseeing Pass – includes standard skip the ticket line entry to the Empire State Building as well as over 100 other attractions in the city

On a recent trip to New York City we used the New York Pass to visit the Empire State Building and had no issues.

Note that you do not need to reserve a timeslot with these passes, however at busier times it can be a good idea to do so. Information on how to do so is provided with each pass.

Can You Skip The Lines at the Empire State Building?

Yes, it is possible to purchase a ticket to skip the lines at the Empire State Building.

There are three types of line you will encounter when visiting the Empire State Building.

First there is a security line, then there’s a line for tickets, and then if it is particularly busy, there will be lines for the various elevators.

If you purchase your entry ticket in advance, then you can skip the lines for the ticket machines, which are found on the 2nd floor. We highly recommend purchasing your ticket in advance so you don’t waste time in the ticket line.

It’s also possible to purchase an express ticket like this (make sure you select the express option). This will let you take advantage of VIP entry, and go to the front of the security and elevator lines by using the express lanes.

Of course, if lots of people have these tickets there is the potential to be a bit of a wait, but for the most part these tickets will offer a faster experience than the standard ticket that most visitors buy.

What are the Opening Times for the Empire State Building?

The Empire State Building is normally open 365 days of the year from 8am until 2am. The last elevators typically ascend at 1:15 am.

In exceptional circumstances these opening times may change – check the official website in advance of your visit to be sure it is open when you visit.

Note: currently the opening times are changed. Check the official website for the latest information.

You can also visit the Empire State Building for sunrise, with the exclusive sunrise access ticket . Times will vary depending on the time of the sunrise.

Tours of the Empire State Building

There are a number ways to experience the Empire State Building. As well as the official tours mentioned earlier in this guide, there are a number of other options you have, both for visiting, and for getting a unique view of the building.

These include:

  • This guided walking tour which includes tickets to the Empire State Building as well as tour of a number of other sights in the city
  • How about experiencing the Empire State Building from the air? You can get a truly once in a lifetime view by taking a private or shared helicopter ride over the city.

What is there to See and Do at the Empire State Building?

The majority of visitors who come to the Empire State Building are primarily interested in visiting the world famous outdoor observation deck and taking in the views of the city.

However, there is more to do on site than enjoying the view, and the entire experience has been significantly improved in recent years. As a result, a visit to the Empire State Building is definitely no longer just about standing in line for an elevator and taking in that view.

If you haven’t visited before, or perhaps haven’t visited for a while, you may be surprised as to how much there is to see and do here following major upgrades in 2019.

Here are some of the things you can do on site.

Observation Decks at the Empire State Building

Obviously the main reason for your visit is to go up towards the top of the tower and experience the views. There are three floors with observatories in the Empire State Building as follows:

  • 80th floor indoor observatory . Opened in late 2019, this is the newest observatory. It’s an entirely indoor observatory, so the views are through glass windows
  • 86th floor indoor/outdoor observatory . The original and most famous of the observatories, this features both an indoor and outdoor viewing area which wraps around the whole building. This is the highest floor within the actual tower, all the height above this is the spire. It’s also the highest open-air viewpoint in the city.
  • 102nd floor observatory . Found on the highest floor of the building, and fully refurbished in 2019, this floor now features floor to ceiling glass windows offering spectacular views over the city.

Exhibits and Route through the Empire State Building

The Empire State Building has a number of exhibits where you can learn about all sorts of things related to the building. This includes information about the construction of the Empire State Buildings, its architecture, its history, and its appearances in popular culture.

Here are all the exhibits you will see when you visit, as well as where they are located so you know what to expect at which part of your visit.

The first nine exhibits are located on the 2nd floor after the ticket check. These flow one after another in progressive order, and are as follows:

  • The Site in the 1920s : The exhibits start with an overview of the site before the building was even here, when the Waldorf Astoria Hotel stood on this location.
  • Construction : Models, images, and statues depict the construction process of the building, which took just over a year to complete
  • Opening Day : Newspaper prints and images share the excitement of the day the Empire State Building opened to the world
  • Modern Marvel : This interactive exhibit tells the story of how the present day Empire State Building is both energy efficient and sustainable
  • Otis Elevators : A skyscraper could not exist without elevators, and this exhibit tells the story of the elevators that make a visit to the upper floor possible in minutes
  • Urban Campus : The Empire State Building is more than just a tourist attraction—thousands of people come to work here every day. This exhibit shows some of the workspaces and views that visitors don’t normally get to see
  • World’s Most Famous Building : The Empire State Building is regularly featured in the media, including in movies, TV shows, games, commercials, This 72 screen exhibit offers an immersive snapshot of over 600 clips that feature the building.
  • Kong : Arguably the most well known film to have featured the Empire State Building, the 1933 Kong movie was where the Empire State Building made its silver screen debut. This fun exhibit gives you an idea of what it might have been like to be inside the building as Kong scaled it!
  • Celebrity : A lot of people visit the Empire State Building, including some of the world’s most well known faces. This exhibit shares a history of some of these more famous visitors, including signed memorabilia.

JK Rowling at Empire State Building

Following these 2nd floor exhibits, you will ride the elevator to the 80th floor. This elevator ride is also an experience, with the whole ceiling of the elevator displaying a fun video that shows the building being built around the elevator shaft as you ascend. Thankfully it’s all done by the time you get to the top!

Following the elevator ride you’ll come out on the 80th floor. This is also an observatory deck with windows offering views over the city, so you will likely want to pause at a window and enjoy the view.

However, as well as the views from the windows you’ll find the following exhibits on the 80th floor:

  • NYC: Above and Beyond : This interactive exhibit asks you questions about your interests and will then suggest an itinerary of sights you might want to visit throughout the city
  • Artistry in Light : This short film with accompanying images tells the story of how the music and light shows at the Empire State Building are put together.
  • Stephen Wiltshire’s Drawing : In 2017 British artist Stephen Wiltshire took a 45 minute long helicopter flight over New York City. He then drew, from memory, a detailed landscape image of the city. This is now on display on the 80th floor
  • Scenes of NYC : The last major exhibit features some of the classic viewfinders that the 86th floor is known for. If you look through the viewfinders, you’ll see panoramic views of nine well-known New York locations and landmarks.

From the 80th floor there is another elevator to the 86th floor which is just a standard elevator.

The 86th floor is all about the view, with both an indoor and outdoor viewing experience. There are some plaques and signs, but no major exhibits on this floor.

outdoor observation deck empire state building

From the 86th floor you can also ride up to the 102nd floor observation deck via another elevator if you have the correct ticket. This glass elevator has a light show and offers view of the inside of the tower as you ascend.

The top floor also has no exhibits, but the stunning views through the floor to ceiling windows more than make up for that.

One thing to bear in mind when visiting is that the exhibits, particularly on the second floor, are designed with a one-way flow in mind. Basically a visit to the Empire State Building used to involve a lot of lines, and the idea was to replace this rather boring line experience with something a lot more fun and interactive.

What this means is that you shouldn’t feel the urge to rush through and head to the top, as it’s a one-way flow and after you leave the 2nd floor exhibits for the 80th floor, you cannot return to them. So make sure you take your time and see everything on your way – the view will be waiting for you at the top when you are done!

The exception to this rule is for the sunrise ticket , where you visit the exhibits after the sunrise.

Restaurants at the Empire State Building

You can dine at the Empire State Building, and there are a number of options for doing so, including both table service options and fast-casual self-service dining options. All the dining options are on the ground floor, and can be visited without a ticket.

For a sit down meal, you have two main options. First there is the STATE Grill & Bar which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options, as well as bar and lounge snacks. They also have a full drinks menu of soft and alcoholic beverages.

The other main sit-down dining option is Tacombi . This offers Mexican food including Tacos made from scratch. There’s also a full drinks range, with their margaritas being a popular option.

If you’d prefer something a bit quicker, there are a number of casual dining options on the ground floor as well, which include Chopt, Chipotle, and Sushi-Terra. There’s also a Juice Press and a Starbucks on site if you are just looking for a drink.

Shopping at the Empire State Building

Naturally, you can go souvenir shopping at the Empire State Building. There’s a gift store on the 80th floor as well as on the 2nd floor just after you exit the elevators and before you leave the building.

There’s also a Walgreens, AT&T store, and a FedEx Express store on site.

Thanks for the great article! I want to be on the deck half an hour prior to sunset on Wednesday 27 September, which is 6.45 pm. What entrance time do you think i should book my ticket for? Coming from Australia!

Hey Shelley!

My pleasure! So I would probably aim for around 4pm to 5pm. That should give you plenty of time to see all the exhibits as you go through from the entrance (there’s quite a lot to see before you actually go up the elevator). That said, if you don’t think you’ll be as interested in the galleries and exhibits and just want to get to the top, then I’d say 5pm should give you plenty of time. Normally even at busier times the queues aren’t more than 45 minutes to an hour, and you’re visiting on a weekday so it should be fine.

Have a great time in NYC!

Everything You Need to Know About Visiting the Empire State Building

King Kong scaled it. An affair was remembered atop it. Buddy the Elf gallivanted through its Art Deco lobby. The Empire State Building is one of the most recognizable and visited structures in the world, welcoming millions of sightseers each year. And if you haven’t visited since 2019, it’s time to head back. That year the destination unveiled a massive $165 million reimagination of its Observatory Experience, which was just named the top attraction in the United States by Tripadvisor for the second year running.

You can visit exhibits on the second floor and the newly built 80th floor interactive multigallery museum, as well as the iconic 86th Floor Observatory and the entirely redesigned 102nd Floor Observatory. With floor-to-ceiling windows that frame sprawling views, you can see six states on a clear day—New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Delaware. To help you make the most of your visit, we spoke to an insider, Siobhan McShane. The longtime Empire State Building host gives guided tours of the attraction’s observation decks and historical artifacts. She shared a few of the more exciting and unexpected things you’ll find when you enter what's touted as the "World’s Most Famous Building.” Here are her tips about what you’ll see and how to maximize your visit:

1. You can (and should!) preplan your trip

Reservations are required, so save time and money by purchasing your tickets online . Aside from the main observatory options, there are multiple special offerings, such as an All Access tour and Sunrise Experience. All ticket types include the open-air, 360-degree 86th Floor Observatory—the famous site of countless film and television scenes.

“The north and south views are definitely the most popular,” says MacShane, who’s been an observatory host for 19 years. “Guests love to look south to the Financial District and the harbor, and north at Central Park.”

2. Do head up to the 102nd floor

“If you’re here, you should go to the very top!” MacShane continues. “The views are truly remarkable. You immediately see the stunning views as the elevator doors open, and it delivers a true sense of awe on guests’ faces as they see the entire city before they even step out of the elevator car.”

3. Don’t rush through the indoor portions

While the views are exciting, make time to learn about the building’s storied history. “A lot of people rush through the new museum, which is actually one of the primary highlights of the visit,” says MacShane. “Before the reimagination, the only major part of the attraction was the incredible views, which are still unmatched to this day. The thing that sets us apart from other attractions and observatories, however, is our museum and our history. There isn’t a time limit, so take your time and enjoy it all!”

Contruction at Empire State Building

4. Appreciate how the Empire State Building was ahead of its time

MacShane says people are usually most surprised by the details surrounding the Empire State Building’s construction. “The fact that the entire building was completed in under a year and a month ahead of schedule amazes people,” she says. “Construction started March 17, 1930, and ended March 1, 1931. The building opened May 1, 1931, just 13 months after construction began.” The building was so high-tech when it first opened that it required changes to local laws. “The law at the time of opening stated that elevators could only go max 600 feet per minute, but ESB’s elevators went 800 feet per minute, so the law was updated,” she says. Also, “Wind tunnels under the building act as cooling for the lower floors. This is still the case today.”

5. You might catch a meaningful moment…

It’s no surprise that people choose the stunning backdrop of the Empire State Building’s views for their most important occasions. “There’s no way I can count how many engagements I’ve seen—it has to be in the thousands,” says MacShane.

6. …or even a celebrity!

On your way to the 86th floor, you’ll walk through an exhibit filled with photographs of famous visitors who’ve graced the observatory over the last 92 years. In 2022 alone, about 150 people of note walked the Empire State Building’s halls. Click here to book your tickets to visit the Empire State Building today.

Kristen is a  New York state native  and  we lived in NYC for a few months in 2021 . We chose to move to the city so we could create the best possible content because you can’t just visit New York City for a weekend and claim to be an expert. Read more  about us .

While we no longer live here, we still travel to the city every year because it’s one of the  best places to visit in the USA .  We’ve visited the Empire State Building multiple times over the years . It’s one of the most iconic things to do in New York and it shouldn’t be missed.

What Is The Empire State Building?

Manhattan skyscraper street view with Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is a world famous 102-story skyscraper located in Midtown Manhattan. It was constructed in the early 1930’s within a recording breaking 410 days .

When this building was completed in 1931, it was the tallest in the world and the first to be built over 100 stories high. Today, it’s the 8th tallest building in New York City, but it still holds the reputation as one of the best observation decks in the city .

The top floor reaches a height of 1,250 ft (381m) while the spire and antenna continue to 1,454 feet (443m). This is such a large complex, it even has its own zip code (10118). There are no apartments or residences in the building, but there are numerous office spaces, shops and restaurants.

You’ll need a ticket to visit the Empire State Building. There are two main ticket options , but if you choose to visit during a sunset time slot, tickets will be an additional $10 for the 86th floor and an additional $13 for the 102nd floor.

Both tickets include entry to all exhibits located on the 2nd and 80th floors. So the main decision you’ll have to consider is what floor you want to visit, the 86th or the 86th and 102nd floor observatory.

We recommend the NY Sightseeing Pass because it’s extremely easy to use while offering both flexibility and big savings. The Empire State Building is included with this pass and we have an exclusive 5-10% discount just for our readers.

Empire State Building Walkthrough

At the Empire State Building, you’ll walk through multiple exhibits and learn about the history of this building and New York City. It’s a one-way system  so once you leave a room, you won’t be allowed to go back.

If you have a sunset ticket, keep an eye on your timing . There are numerous things to see and you might want to give yourself extra time to see the exhibits since they are included in your ticket price.

In this next section, we’re going to give you a detailed walkthrough including the  best things to do at the Empire State Building  and exactly what you can expect.

1. Ticket Entrance And Security

Woman waiting in line to have her photo taken at a NYC observation deck

As you enter through the street level entrance, you’ll have to pass through security and an automated ticketing area . If you’ve already purchased tickets online, you can bypass most of this line.

Before getting to the observatory at the top, you’ll be directed to informational exhibits on both the 2nd and 80th floors . On your way up to the second floor exhibits, you’ll pass by a large image of the Empire State Building. Ask the group behind you to take a photo and do the same for them.

2. 2nd Floor Exhibits

Woman posing for a photo with King Kong

We can tell you from experience, the exhibits here are the best out of all New York City’s observation decks . Take your time as you wander through both of these floors.

There are a total of 9 exhibits on the second floor . You can also opt to download the free self-guided audio tour with the free Wifi onsite. Below you’ll find the exact order of the exhibits on the 2nd floor:

  • The Site In The 1920s : Black and white photographs show the original building site where the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel originally stood.
  • Construction : Various bronzed statues of the iron workers are placed throughout this space as you walk around to learn about the construction of the building.
  • Opening Day : This showcases various newspaper prints and images from the opening day.
  • Modern Marvel : Lean how this building strives to lead the way in sustainability and energy efficiency.
  • Otis Elevators : A model of the original mast car along with stories about present day technology.
  • Urban Campus : Explore the workplaces, amenities and the hidden views inside the building.
  • World’s Most Famous Building : A surround-sound theater features numerous media highlights of the Empire State Building over the years.
  • Kong : Take the opportunity to step inside King Kong’s hands and you may even feel the building shake.
  • Celebrity : Pictures of A-list celebrities and famous visitors who have climbed to the top of the observation deck.

3. Elevator Experience

Man smiling and riding the elevator at the Empire State Building

After the exhibits on the 2nd floor, it’s now time to ride the main elevator. A large classy lift will transport you to the 80th floor in less than one minute .

As the elevator gains elevation, an animated movie is constructed around you . The familiar iron workers from the 2nd floor exhibit swing on metal beams while tossing hot rivets into the air surround you on the way up.

4. 80th Floor Exhibits

View once outside the elevator on the 80th floor

Once you come out of this elevator, you are now on the 80th floor . You’ll walk past a small observatory area with windows, but don’t worry because the best views are yet to come . This is a great place to take a small rest if you need a minute before continuing on.

As you continue along the 80th floor, you walk through many more exhibits. Here is the exact order of exhibits on this floor:

  • NYC Above And Beyond : In partnership with NYC & Company, this interactive exhibit helps you plan a New York City itinerary .
  • Artistry In Light : A short film about the famous light shows and how they are created.
  • Stephen Wiltshire’s Drawing : British artist, Stephen Wiltshire took a 45-minute helicopter ride over NYC in 2017 and then drew the entire skyline from memory.
  • Scenes of NYC : Peak through the famous viewfinders to see panoramic views of the city.

After you finished the last exhibit on the 80th floor, a standard elevator will take you 6 floors up to the open air viewing platform on the 86th floor.

5. 86th Floor Observatory

Man taking a photo through metal fencing at a NY observation deck

After two floors of exhibits and two elevators, you’ll arrive to the crescendo of the Empire State Building , the main observation deck. This floor provides visitors with both an outdoor and indoor viewing platform with 360° views.

The 86th floor is square shaped with a fairly narrow observation deck and it can be quite crowded if it’s busy. We visited New York City in winter so there were heaters on the ceiling emanating a bright red glow you can see in most of our photos.

A metal mesh fence surrounds the entire observation platform . But the spaces are large enough, you can take unobstructed photographs. Several viewfinders are located in the outside viewing area and they point directly at many of NYC’s famous landmarks.

Here is what you can expect to see on the 86th floor from each direction:

  • Northeast : Chrysler Building, Times Square and Top of the Rock
  • Southeast : East River and Brooklyn
  • Southwest : One World Observatory, Flatiron Building and Lower Manhattan
  • Northwest : Hudson River, Hudson Yards and Edge

If you purchased the 86th observation deck ticket, this is where your tour terminates . But if you purchased tickets to the 102nd floor, you have more to go.

6. 102nd Floor

Manhattan skyline from the Empire State Building

A glass elevator will bring you up the last 16 floors to the top deck . This indoor observation deck is completely enclosed with floor to ceiling windows on all sides and sits 1,224 ft over Manhattan .

When the weather is clear, you should be able to see up to 80 miles in the distance . This includes six states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. While this floor is higher, there is no outdoor viewing platform which makes it difficult to take photos without glare.

Restaurant Options

After taking in the incredible views, you might have worked up an appetite. There are many dining options located on the ground floor including both fast and sit down service food options. You don’t need a ticket to enter this dining area.

If you’re looking for table service:

  • STATE Grill & Bar – Breakfast, lunch and dinner options along with observatory lunch or dinner which can be purchased in advance.
  • Tacombi – A Mexican style restaurant featuring homemade tacos made from sustainably wholesome and simple ingredients.

But if you need something faster, you can also find Chipotle, Chopt, Sushi-Terra and a Juice Press nearby.

Best Time To Visit

View of Lower Manhattan with from a NYC observation deck

The best time to visit the Empire State building is one to two hours before sunset . This is the perfect time of day because you’ll be able to see the skyline in the daytime, while the sun sets and at night. Golden hour  offers the softest light  which is the best time of day to take photos.

However, this is also the  most expensive and busiest time to visit . If you want to avoid the crowds, we recommend you visit early in the morning or after the sun has set. There is no limit to how long you can stay at top so you can really use this to your advantage.

We’ve visited multiple times of day including sunset, night and early morning around 10:00am. The crowds were much smaller in the early morning and later at night after the sun had gone down.

But sunset is a special time. You’ll see the sun set behind the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan with stunning colors over Chelsea and New Jersey as well. However, a night visit offers a chance to see the New York Skyline shinning bright with lights from every angle.

Travel Tip : Due to the numerous exhibits, you need to add extra time if visiting during sunset. So if we were to visit again, we’d book about 2 hours before sunset to give us time to see all the exhibits. If you don’t really want to see the exhibits, you can ignore this tip.

Tips For Visiting

Photos of celebrities taken at the Empire State Building

We’ve covered everything you need to know in this guide, but here are a few important tips for your visit:

  • Purchase your tickets in advance  – If you want to visit at sunset, you’ll need to purchase tickets online well in advance to secure your time slot.
  • Take your time – This observation deck offers the best exhibits so don’t rush and keep in mind it’s a one-way system.
  • Tower Lights – The Empire State Building is lit up throughout the year to recognize holidays and special events. To see information about the lights, click here .
  • Bring a jacket or coat – The outdoor viewing platform on the 86th floor can be extremely cold and windy. Make sure you bring something warm so you can properly enjoy the views.
  • Visit out of season – If you want to avoid the crowds, don’t plan your trip in summer. Instead, consider visiting New York in April or a similar shoulder month.

Pros And Cons

We personally enjoyed our visit to this observation deck, but there were a few negatives to visiting too. Here are a few pros and cons to help sway your decision:

  • The oldest and original NYC observation deck
  • Exhibits on 2nd and 80th floor are the best out of all 5 observation decks in NYC
  • Both indoor and outdoor viewing spaces
  • Stunning 360° Manhattan street views
  • Ability to take photos with unobstructed views on the 86th floor (have to put phone or camera through metal mesh fencing)
  • Crowds at any given time can be large
  • Glass windows on 102nd floor are not great for photos due to reflections
  • No view of the Empire State Building because you’re at the top of it
  • Underwhelming elevator experience
  • Most expensive NYC observation deck and extra fee for 102nd floor

In Conclusion

World's famous building exhibits at the Empire State Building

We like this observation deck because it’s an iconic New York City experience and features some of the best exhibits in the city. You can’t mention New York without the Empire State Building so it’s certainly something any first timer to the city should add to their bucket list.

So is the Empire State Building worth it ?

Yes, the Empire State Building is worth it because it’s one of the original observation decks in the city along with Top of the Rock .  According to TripAdvisor , this experience is consistently rated a 4.5/5.0 with thousands of positive reviews. We completely agree with these ratings, but we don’t like how much this experience costs.

On of the best parts about visiting the Empire State Building is the unique street view you get looking down from the 86th floor observation deck. But compared to newer and modern decks in the city, it can feel quite dated and old.

Price & Hours

  • Facilities 3.5
  • Atmosphere 4.0

U.S. News Insider Tip: Watch out for "sunset peak" pricing, which adds an extra $10 per ticket for two hours around sunset each evening. But on a clear day, it just might be worth it. – Elizabeth Von Tersch, Senior Editor

New York City Tourist 101 dictates that you must swing by this landmark structure in midtown Manhattan. And despite the hefty admission fees, the crowds and the long lines, recent visitors insist that you won't be sorry. In fact, taking a trip to the top of the Empire State Building is either the perfect way to begin or end your Big Apple excursion – on a clear day you'll be able to the see the city's major highlights some 1,250 feet beneath you.

Looking up at the art deco skyscraper from the ground is also pretty spectacular, especially in the evenings when there's a little mood lighting. The Empire State Building's tower lights have maintained a tradition of changing color to recognize various occasions and organizations throughout the year since 1976. In 2012, its iconic tower lighting system was modernized by replacing its flood lights with a dynamic lighting system unique to the Empire State Building. It's now equipped with more than 16 million colors in limitless combinations and effects.

If you'd like to admire the view from the top, you'll have two observatories to choose from: the 86th floor or the 102nd floor. No matter which observatory you choose, you'll have access to the various exhibits on the second and 80th floors. Exhibits detail everything from the building's construction in the 1930s to its role in present-day pop culture. If you're hoping to avoid the perennial crowds, it's recommended that you visit in the morning or at night after 9 p.m.

You really can't miss seeing the Empire State (it's the fourth-tallest building in New York City), but in case you do, look toward midtown Manhattan at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street (take the B, D, F, M, N, Q or R train to 34th Street). You'll also likely enjoy an eyeful of it if you sign up for one of the best New York City helicopter tours . The 86th- and 102nd-floor observatories are generally open every day from 10 a.m. until 10 or 11 p.m.; hours may vary depending on the day and month. Note that restroom facilities are not available on the 102nd floor. Tickets to the 86th floor cost $44 for adults, $42 for seniors and $38 for children ages 6 to 12; children 5 and younger visit for free. Tickets for the Express Pass, which allows you to bypass any lines, start at $80 per person. Consult the Empire State Building's official website for further details on pricing and to find the lighting schedule.

#1 Central Park

This part-park, part-museum, part-concert hall swallows central Manhattan, and many of the city's most notable attractions are situated next to it or within its limits ( the Guggenheim , the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History , to name a few). But travelers insist that you shouldn't just pass through Central Park on your way to another place. This 843-acre green space is a favorite of New Yorkers and tourists; you can come here to exercise, dine, go to the zoo and more.

Almost everyone has a positive impression of the park, but no one has quite the same experience or recommends that you do quite the same thing. There's an almost impossible amount of sights to see here (hidden treasures, indeed), including more than 20 playgrounds, 48 fountains, monuments or sculptures, and 30 bridges. Here's a shortlist:

Although all of the observation decks in the building have great views, the view on the very top floor (102) is known to be the best.

On your way up to the 80th floor, there are many exhibits that you can check out to make the most of your visit! Many of these exhibits outline the making of the Empire State Building in the 1920s and the actions that have been taken since to keep this building one of the tallest in the world.

Many other exhibits outline the A-list celebrities that have been to the building, what the workers experience during their time in the building, and hidden views that most visitors don’t get to see.

The stairs above the 2nd floor of the Empire State Building are often entirely closed to the public. However, rest assured that the elevator ride up to the 102nd floor takes less than one minute! In fact, the entire Empire State Building has 73 Otis elevators so that you can be sure you won’t have to sweat or wait in line to get to the top.

Empire State Building 80th Floor Observatory

If you’re visiting the observation deck of the Empire State Building, the 80th floor will most likely be your first stop! The recently redesigned 80th floor of the Empire State Building is the new landing spot for anyone on their way up to the 86th or 102nd floor. You can take a realistic tour of the High Line, Grand Central Terminal, and many other spots in Midtown Manhattan at this exhibit!

Some highlights from here are views of the Statue of Liberty , Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, and the surrounding skyscrapers!

The 80th floor also has an exhibit that lets visitors create a custom itinerary for all five boroughs of the city. At the end, visitors can email this to themselves and rest assured that the rest of their time in the city is planned out.

Lastly, this floor has a large gift shop that’s great for getting souvenirs, paintings, books, and more.

Empire State Building 86th Floor Observatory

The 86th floor of the Empire State Building is often referred to as the main observation deck of the Empire State Building. Unlike the other floors in the building, the 86th floor is reserved for those who have reservations during a selected time window.

This floor is known for being the site of many famous television shows and movies, including Zoolander, Oblivion, and An Affair to Remember!

On a clear, sunny day, the deck on the 86th floor offers a view of six states: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Delaware. On top of these views, you can also see 360-degree views of the five boroughs!

Empire State Building 102nd Floor Observatory

The 102nd floor in the Empire State Building is the highest that visitors can go. Standing at just over 1,200 feet, this Empire State Building Observatory is accessed through a unique glass elevator. This elevator boasts floor-to-ceiling windows and 360-degree views of the entire city.

Although the 86th floor offers a heated outdoor experience during the winter, the 102nd floor is indoors all year round. Although it isn’t much higher than the 86th floor, it is known to have the best views and is worth the extra cost.

Although the building recommends at least one hour for your visit on their website, most visitors end up staying closer to 2 hours. That way, you can see the immersive galleries, observation decks, and gift shop.

We recommend planning for the full time as when it’s busy you can’t just go straight to the top, you will have to go through all the exhibits along the way to get to the elevators taking you up to the observatories.

Empire State Building hours:

The views are incredible and there are typically fewer crowds during the later hours!

Empire State Building Peak seasons:

While touring the Empire State Building, it’s essential to remember that the most popular time to go on the observation decks is during sunset. Although the view at this time is excellent, keep in mind that it will be crowded.

Throughout the year, summer vacation through Christmas is the busiest time for this building. If you want to visit one of the observation decks during the spring or winter, you can expect to see fewer crowds!

Empire State Building Dining options:

Inside the Empire State Building is STATE Grill and Bar. This is one of the most popular restaurants in Midtown Manhattan! This American restaurant offers street-level views and art deco design inside.

Another excellent dining option on the ground floor is Tacombi. Voted to have the best fish taco in the entire state of New York, this Mexican restaurant offers great margaritas and fresh tacos! Although, I’d say go for the pastor tacos or the avocado tostada.

If you’re searching for a quick bite to eat on the ground floor of the building, you can also stop by the Chipotle, Starbucks, Chopt, Sushi-Teria, or Juice Press!

If you have a little more flexibility with your dining and schedule, head to Koreatown for some of my personal favorite areas for cuisine! Visual Story : 15 must-know tips before visiting Empire State Building

Empire State Building’s 102nd floor

Situated at 381 meters (1,250 feet), the 102nd-floor observatory is the highest visitors can go in the Empire State Building.

This enclosed viewing platform is sixteen stories above the 86th-floor observation deck and accessed through a one-of-a-kind glass elevator.

In 2020, the top observatory at Empire State got a facelift.

Large floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides give visitors a 360-degree view of the city.

From the Empire State Building’s highest observation deck, you can see up to 130 km (80 miles) into the distance.

Guests can purchase Standard Entry tickets or Express Entry tickets for the 86th-floor of the Empire State Building deck and upgrade it once at the venue to include access to the 102nd-floor deck.

This upgrade will cost you some extra money for every visitor, irrespective of age.

Recommended Reading: Visiting Empire State Building after dark

Frankly, it is not a question of the 86th floor or the 102nd floor.

Empire State's Main Deck vs Top Deck

Visitors usually wonder if the observation deck on the 102nd floor is worth the extra effort and money.

It may be 16 floors higher, but is the view from the 102nd floor better?

If you have time on your hands, and money isn’t an issue, our quick answer is, “Yes, the Empire State Building’s 102nd-floor observatory is totally worth it!”

If you can’t manage cold, the upper observatory makes sense yet again.

Even though the 86th-floor platform has radiant heaters, it can get freezing since it is an outdoor area.

Visitors who would instead prefer a warm experience upgrade to the 102nd floor and take in the views.

However, visitors who thought the upper floor views would be even more fascinating than what they saw from the 86th floor were disappointed.

While the 102nd floor is the ‘official top floor’ of the Empire State Building, just above it is the 103rd floor, open to a select few.

It is an open-air area, protected only by a small ledge and low railing.

This floor is located in the metal mast on top of the tower, originally supposed to be a mooring point for Zeppelins.

Many believe that the 60-meter (200-foot) long metal mast was added to the building so that the Empire State Building could be significantly taller than the Chrysler Building.

Numerous celebrities have made it to this 103rd floor, which is more of a balcony with no safety measures.

The view from this small space is vertigo-inducing.

To get to this building floor, you can contact the officials with a marketing idea, a PR pitch, or a news story angle.

Believe it or not, the Empire State Building does have the 104th floor.

Both the public and celebrities can’t go up here, which is less of a floor and more space to step out of the building.

To get to the 104th floor of the Empire State Building, one must climb a few steps from the 103rd floor, open a hatch, and step out.

Only engineers or maintenance workers get to this floor, and that too when they are harnessed to the building.

104th floor of Empire State

It is fair to say that this is literally the Empire State Building’s top floor.

With the New York CityPASS , enjoy prepaid admission to five of NYC’s top attractions and save 40%. Visit two New York icons – The Empire State Building and the American Museum of Natural History- alongside options like the Statute of Liberty and more.

Empire State Building’s tickets don’t have any time limits.

Once you are inside, you can stay for however long you want.

Visits to the Empire State Building’s observation deck on the 86th floor usually take an hour. If you plan to visit the deck on the 102nd floor, you will need another half hour.

There are long waiting lines during the peak tourist season (May to September) to buy tickets and enter the elevators.

Buying the Regular Tickets helps you skip the lines at the ticket counter, and purchasing the Express Tickets online allows you to cut both the ticket counter lines and the queue at the elevators.

Tip: Check out the best time to visit Empire State Building

There are no guided tours at the Empire State Building’s observation decks.

However, you can download the free multimedia tour app, which is included in every admission to the attraction.

You can download the app for free for your Android phone or iPhone before the visit or download it on-site via their free wifi.

Both the ESB observation decks have powerful binoculars for visitors to take in the unobstructed views in all directions.

Restrooms are available only on the 86th floor.

There are no restaurant or food and drink stalls at the 86th and 102nd-floor observatories.

However, if you want, there are plenty of food options to choose from on the main concourse at the lobby level.

Here are a some questions visitors usually ask before booking tickets for the Empire State Building.

Officially, the Empire State Building has 102 floors, including the 13th floor, which many buildings skip to avoid the anxiety associated with the number 13. However, they also have two other floors – the 103rd floor, with a balcony open only to celebrities, and the 104th floor, which is more like the building’s terrace.

The timing varies with the seasons. The elevator’s last trip up is 45 minutes before the closer for the day, after which it is shut down for that day. Usually, entry begins at around 10 am and stays open till 10 pm, with some exceptions when it stays open for longer.

The 86th floor of the Empire State Building has an open-air but heated viewing platform from where, on clear days, visitors can see up to six states. Almost every visitor to the Empire State Building steps onto the 86th floor.

The 102nd floor of the Empire State Building has an enclosed observation deck with large floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides, giving visitors a 360-degree view of the city. This is the highest observatory in the building, and visitors access it through a one-of-a-kind glass elevator.

For regular visitors, the Empire State Building’s topmost floor is the 102nd floor, which has the highest observatory. However, above that is the 103rd floor, which is open only to celebrities.

Visiting the Empire State Building: 13 Things to Know Before You Go

Empire State Building at Sunset

Ever wondered what it's like to stand atop one of the world's most iconic buildings? From hidden Art Deco gems in the lobby to maximizing your time at the observation decks, these tips go beyond the tourist brochure to ensure you have an unforgettable New York City experience.

Standing 1,250 feet over Midtown Manhattan, the Empire State Building was constructed during a race to erect the world’s tallest building. As the roaring twenties drew to a close, two automobile giants shifted their competition from the streets to the skies while  stealing the record-holding title  from Paris’s Eiffel Tower. Ultimately, Walter Chrysler’s “monument to me” overtook the Eiffel Tower as the world’s tallest building. But the Empire State Building, financed by General Motors executive John J. Raskob, surpassed the Chrysler Building less than a year later and proudly held the title of world’s tallest building for nearly 40 years.

While the Empire State Building is no longer the world’s tallest, the steel and stone US landmark remains one of the globe’s most iconic skyscrapers. Over the years, we watched an animated King Kong scale the Art Deco Building with ease and held our breath as Christopher Reeve’s Superman swooped down to keep the 200-foot-tall radio tower from tumbling into the street below. We laughed when Elf pressed all of the buttons in the elevator and announced, “It looks like a Christmas tree.” And we swooned when widower Sam (played by Tom Hanks) got a second chance at love with Annie (Meg Ryan’s character) in  Sleepless in Seattle .

But what is it really like to visit the Empire State Building and glide up to the 80th floor in a glass elevator? Here are 13 important things to know before you go.

1. The Lobby Is Also A Work Of Art

Embracing the glamorous modern-meets-fashion Art Deco style that was popular in the roaring twenties, the lobby of the Empire State Building is a sight to behold. When you step into the soaring lobby, look up to see a gilded mural of celestial beings that seems to hint at the stunning views that await you many stories up.

2. There Are Actually Two Observatories

Immortalized in movies like  An Affair to Remember  and  Sleepless in Seattle , as well as more than one episode of The Mindy Project , the open-air viewing deck that wraps around the 86th floor of the Empire State Building is one of the most iconic spots in the Big Apple. But did you know that there is a second observatory? For an additional fee, ascend an additional 16 floors to the 102nd-floor observatory. While this higher deck is fully enclosed, the floor-to-ceiling windows offer unfettered panoramic views of the horizon.

3. Buy Tickets In Advance

With so much to do and see in America’s most visited city, you don’t want to stand in line for long. Speed things up by purchasing your tickets to the Empire State Building observation deck in advance. Tickets are available for purchase on the  Empire State Building website . Or, see the Empire State Building along with five other major attractions by purchasing a  New York CityPASS .

4. Speaking Of Lines

You’ll stand in several lines when you visit the Empire State Building. First, there is security. Then, you’ll need to get your tickets. (Even if you’ve purchased them in advance per the recommendation above, you’ll still need to retrieve your on-site paper ticket from one of the kiosks.) Then, there is the line to start your visit — first winding through the 2nd-floor exhibits and then on to the elevator ride to the top.

Sage Advice:  If your time is more precious than your money, see the Empire State Building with a  Premium Experience ticket . Not only will you get to skip the line on your way to the 86th-floor observatory, but you’ll also enjoy a customized 90-minute guided tour that includes additional sights and experiences.

5. A Sense Of Security

When visiting the Empire State Building, you’ll need to go through a security check. The experience is similar to airport security, with a walk-through metal detector and bag check. There is no coat check or baggage holding area at the Empire State Building, and only carry-on size luggage is allowed. So if your first stop in New York is its most beloved skyscraper, it’s best to drop these items off at your hotel or vacation rental  first. Naturally, weapons aren’t allowed to join you on the observatory deck, and neither are glass bottles or tripods.

Interactive Exhibits at the Empire State Building

6. Don’t Rush Through The Interactive Exhibits

Unveiled in July 2019, be sure to take your time exploring the new 10,000-square-foot  interactive exhibit space on the Empire State Building’s 2nd floor. Immersive experiences show you what this stretch of Fifth Avenue looked like before the skyscraper was built and the original Waldorf Astoria Hotel stood on this spot. You can also put yourself in the work boots of one of the “ sky boys ” — the construction workers who helped erect the building in a record time of 410 days. Or explore the high-rise’s celebrity side with clips of the building in movies, shows, and commercials and a wall of photos documenting the famous people who have visited over the years.

7. Go Early (Or Late)

With more than four million visitors a year, the Empire State Building is one of the most visited attractions in New York City. While there’s nearly always a bit of a wait, minimize your time in line (and maximize your enjoyment) by going early. The observation deck is open 365 days a year and heading up in the first two hours of the day may help you beat the rush. You can check the building’s hours  here .

For spectacular nighttime views, see the City That Never Sleeps after dark. The crowds start to die down around 9 p.m. If you plan to see the city’s famous sights via a New York CityPASS , your ticket includes two visits to the 86th-floor observation deck, which lets you see the Big Apple by day and then return during the evening for a nighttime view.

8. Look Up As You Ascend

It only takes a minute to zoom to the 86th floor of the Empire State Building. If you tend to feel a bit claustrophobic in elevators (like me) and are afraid of heights (also me), the folks at the Empire State Building have an interactive video in the ceiling of the elevator to help distract you during the 60 seconds it takes for the gleaming doors to slide shut behind you and reopen to an amazing view high above the city.

9. On A Clear Day, You Can See Forever

Well, if forever is Massachusetts! When taking in the panoramic views of Midtown Manhattan on a clear day, you’ll see a variety of famous landmarks. Look for the acres of green space in  Central Park , the soaring Freedom Tower (also known as One World Trade Center), the blinking billboards of  Times Square , and the  Statue of Liberty as she welcomes “your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

You’ll also look at the Empire State Building’s Art Deco twin, the Chrysler Building, directly from the observation deck’s eye. But past those landmarks, your bird’s-eye view on a clear day also lets you look beyond Midtown to Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

10. Linger As Long As You Like

While I recommend allowing at least two hours to visit the Empire State Building, visitors can linger as long as they’d like (closing time permitting). Since there is no time limit, take your time exploring the 2nd-floor exhibits and enjoying the views from the observation deck.

Empire State Building Lit Red White and Blue

11. A Guiding Light

With the ability to display more than 16 million colors, the LED lights that encircle the top of this famous building aren’t always their signature white. When we visited the Empire State Building in October, the skyscraper displayed horizontal bands of red, white, and green to honor Italy on Columbus Day. On July 4th, look up for red, white, and blue lights celebrating America’s birthday. And on September 11th, the top of the tower is bathed in blue light, commemorating the tragic attack on the twin towers of the city’s World Trade Center.

Sage Advice:  The Empire State Building’s “secret” LED light decoder ring is  published here .

12. Fully Accessible

Although there are 1,872 steps between the Empire State Building lobby and the 102nd-floor observatory, the building is fully ADA compliant. Enter through the handicap-accessible entrance at 20 West 34th Street, where ramps and elevators can accommodate both motorized and non-motorized wheelchairs throughout your visit. On the 86th-floor observation deck, you’ll find that several sections of the wall are lowered for breathtaking views from a wheelchair, including those through the famous coin-operated viewing binoculars.

13. Share Your Snaps

When visiting one of the most photographed landmarks in New York, you’re likely to snap a lot of photos. And your friends at the Empire State Building want to see your shots! Log onto the Empire State Building’s free high-speed Wi-Fi and tag your pics with #EmpireStateBuilding and #ESBFan to share your fun with the rest of the world.

Sage Advice:  Prep for your visit to the Empire State Building by watching one or more of  these television episodes and movies  starring the silver skyscraper.

The Empire State Building: a must-do for any traveler

The Empire State Building is one of the most famous skyscrapers in New York and the United States. It is one of the must-see buildings for any traveler visiting New York! Follow your guide 😉

The Empire State Building is set to reopen to the public on July 20th ! Health security measures are put in place to ensure visitors’ protection: – Dace covering is mandatory, temperature screening, and hand sanitization prior to entrance. – Time slot reservation system with a limited number of visitors, – Installation of filters to purify the air.

History the Empire State Building?

The City of New York sold a virgin plot (now bounded by Broadway and Sixth Avenue on the west, Madison Avenue on the east, 33rd Street on the south and 36th Street on the north) for $2,600 to John Thompson in 1799… It’s hard to believe it’s was just a farm back then ! It’ s not until March 17, 1930 when the construction of the Empire State Building began. The workers were building 4 ½ stories per week under the direction of Shreve, Lamb & Harmon Associates.

On May 1, 1931, President Hoover pressed a button in Washington, D.C. to officially inaugurate and turn on the Empire State Building’s lights. The ESB  has an art-deco style and is in the Midtown area of Manhattan, on 5th Avenue, between 33rd and 34th street. It is 381 meters high (448.7 with antenna) and has 102 stories. It was the tallest building in New York and was the highest for a long time in the world. Nowadays, the tallest building in Manhattan is the One World Trade Center .

When to visit the ESB?

The Empire State Building is open from 8 am to 2 o’clock at night. So you can go both during the day and at night. However, my best tip would be go to the Empire State Building at night to see NYC with all its lights 😉

Empire State Building BPVNY NYCTT MPVNY 4

You will not regret the night view of Manhattan and there are less tourists if you go between 22h-23h, as you can see in my picture. 😉

Empire State Building BPVNY NYCTT MPVNY 5

During the day, I recommend that you visit the Top of the Rock , because from there you get a better view of Central Park and see the ESB. I explain why it’s better to visit the Empire State Building by night and the Top of The rock during the day in this post .

What’s new at the Empire State Building?

After several months of renovations, a museum just opened in August 2019! It is located on the second floor with 10.000 sq/ft galleries! The exhibits deal with the story of the building, from its construction to our days: – The Site in the 1920s with black and white photographs of the area, – Construction makes you feel the atmosphere during the building of the skyscraper, don’t forget to take a picture with the construction workers!

How much does it cost to visit the Empire State Building?

Visiting the ESB it is unforgettable but can also be quite expensive.

Admission rates for the Main Deck (86th Floor): – Adults: $38 – Child: $32 – Senior: $36

Admission rates for the Main Deck + Top Deck (102nd and 86th Floors): – Adults: $58 – Child: $52 – Senior: $56

Please note The Top Deck is closed until further notice.

There is also access for people with disabilities, see in NYCTT .

My advice: the visit of the Empire State Building is included in the New York CityPASS. The pass grants you two visits on the same day, so you can go in the morning and at night. If you want to avoid the long waiting lines, it’s better to arrive when the Empire State Empire opens and come back by 11.00pm. Having a pass allows you to enjoy other activities in New York at a lower price 😉

Another good plan?

The tower of the Empire State Building changes the color of its lights to celebrate a national or international event: the sports national holidays in the United States, Mexico, Germany, events like the US Open. If you are in New York at this time, take advantage of the ESB tower with its various colors. You can see the calendar of the tower lights here .

I wish you a good visit! You can share your pictures on the NYCTT Facebook page 😀

Note: I have visited the Empire State Building several times, once while enjoying a sponsored New York CityPASS .

1. The Lobby Is Also A Work Of Art

Embracing the glamorous modern-meets-fashion Art Deco style that was popular in the roaring twenties, the lobby of the Empire State Building is a sight to behold. When you step into the soaring lobby, look up to see a gilded mural of celestial beings that seems to hint at the views that await you many stories up.

2. There Are Actually Two Observatories

Immortalized in movies like An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle , the open-air viewing deck that wraps around the 86th floor of the Empire State Building is one of the most iconic spots in the Big Apple.

If you plan to see the sights of New York City via a CityPASS, your ticket includes two visits to the 86th-floor observation deck, which lets you see the Big Apple by day and then return during the evening for a nighttime view.

Well, if forever is Massachusetts ! When taking in the panoramic views of Midtown Manhattan on a clear day, you’ll see a variety of notable landmarks. Look for the acres of green space in Central Park , the soaring Freedom Tower (also known as One World Trade Center), the blinking billboards of Times Square , and the Statue of Liberty as she welcomes “your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” You’ll also look at the Empire State Building’s Art Deco twin, the Chrysler Building, directly from the observation deck’s eye.

So don’t rush through the second-floor exhibits, and take your time enjoying the views from the observation deck.

11. A Guiding Light

With the ability to display more than 16 million colors, the LED lights that encircle the top of the Empire State Building aren’t always their signature white. When we visited in October, the skyscraper displayed horizontal bands of red, white, and green to honor Italy on Columbus Day. On July 4th, look up for red, white, and blue lights celebrating America’s birthday. And on September 11th, the top of the tower is bathed in blue light, commemorating the tragic attack on the twin towers of the city’s World Trade Center.

Pro Tip: The Empire State Building’s “secret” LED light decoder ring is published here .

Pro Tip: Prep for your visit to the Empire State Building by watching one or more of these television episodes and movies starring the silver skyscraper.

20 Reasons Why You Need to Visit the Empire State Building

Empire State Building at Night

New York is always an awesome experience, and the Empire State Building is one building you definitely don’t want to miss out on. To help make the most of your experience, we’ll give you plenty of reasons to visit this impressive skyscraper. For those unaware of its location, the Empire State Building is near Times Square, Central Park, Madison Square Garden or 5th Avenue. Train travelers can get off at 33 Street or even 42 Grand Central.

With navigation out of the way, here’s why you should put the Empire State Building on your bucket list.

1. It’s got a breathtaking observation platform

The view from Empire state building in New York

On the 86th floor, there’s an observation platform that’s the ‘tallest open-air’ observatory in New York City. It’s also been featured in several TV shows and movies. Go there to enjoy panoramic views of the city and beyond. Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, The Hudson River, Central Park, … everything is visible from the observation platform. Make your way 16 floors above and you’ll get even more splendid views. The 102nd floor allows you to see the whole city and when the skies are clear your eyesight can spot buildings and objects from 100 kilometers far.

2. It’s an Art Deco masterpiece

10 Cool Facts about the Empire State Building

There’s a lot more to the Empire State Building than the magnificent view. What many tourists and admirers don’t know that it’s an Art Deco masterwork. There’s a 3-story art deco lobby inside the building (newly renovated) that aims to take visitors back to the 1930s. Plus, there are exhibits hosted by the building’s management that are a must-see. For example, the 80th floor Dear to Dream exhibit showcases the skyscraper’s construction while paying tribute to the laborers, builders, and architects who brought the building to life. Before making your way to the lift, make sure to view the exhibit on the retrofit and the sustainability that the skyscraper went after 2009 restating that the Empire State Building is an example to everyone when it comes to our impact on the environment as well as overall efficiency.

3. It hosts an annual contest on Valentine’s Day

You’re probably unaware that the Empire State Building’s management hosts a contest on the 14th of Feb where specific couples are selected to be married on Valentine’s Day. Up to 13th lucky couples are selected, and the event takes place on the 86th floor. From the 13th couples, one married duo gets a bumper prize of a free honeymoon. We’ve even seen the management provide a complementary gown for the brides you may get one too if you’re lucky. Married couples may also be granted free admission to celebrate their anniversary every year.

4. It plays the role of an urban campus

There’s also a museum on the second floor that takes tourists on a “behind-the-scenes” trip of the skyscraper from its humble beginnings as the initial site for the “Waldorf Astoria” when the 20th century was turning to the cutting-edge methods that have made it the masterpiece it is today. If you’re visiting with your children, you may also want to learn about its corporate role, as the building is home to companies like Shutterstock, LinkedIn and more. You can also go inside an elevator shaft (it’s a bit terrifying) to experience how Otis Elevators functioned when the building was first opened, and how they function in today’s day and age.

5. It has lighting shows

Empire State Building Rainbow Lights

Since the 1970s, the Empire State Building’s lights have been an inspiration in New York City’s skyline, but the trademark lighting show was only advanced in the last decade. For example, the stakeholders debuted a new computer-based LED lighting system in 2020, which made it possible to showcase 16 million colors. Since then, lighting shows have become one of the main attractions in the buildings. Even popular celebrities come by, take an elevator from the lobby, and experience the spectacle. The Cheering For Me Now video featuring Manuel Miranda was also shot here and Marc Brickman, the light show choreographer, adjusted the lighting to the track. To get more information on the iconic Tower Lights, make sure to go on the 86h floor and see the exhibit dedicated to them.

6. It gives you the opportunity to pose with King Kong

This building has been a location for many pop-culture scenes and movies in its early days. Just two years after the Empire State Building opened to the public, King Kong came in theaters, with the ape holding the movie’s actress in his hands and climbing the skyscraper this took the building’s popularity to new heights. What’s intriguing is that there’s a statue of Kong inside the building, so you get an opportunity to get up-close with the larger-than-life beast. Made to re-imagine the feel of the 1930s office, go inside the creature’s grip, sit down on his hands, and star down on him as his lifelike, changing gaze peers in. For greater fun, you can also make your way to the “Celebrity” exhibit. This exhibit features more than 70 screens playing a “rotating loop” or short clips where the skyscraper has been featured.

7. It gives you a lot of flexibility

The Empire State Building opens from 8 AM to 2 AM every day, even on the days when it’s a holiday. The last elevator goes up by 1:15 AM. These opening times give you a lot of flexibility to visit it, and if you want to avoid the crowds, make sure to visit as late or as early as possible on a weekday. Whether you visit the building in the winter or summer, you’re definitely going to enjoy. Winters, however, attract cold and you might need to wear heavy clothing. Summers are pleasant but attract a lot of crowd. The choice is yours.

How the Historical Empire State Building has Become a Destination for Couples to Celebrate Love

Although we are past the romantic aura of Valentine's Day, love is still in the air ahead of Spring in New York. For those visiting the Big Apple this season, spending time with a special someone atop the Empire State Building, surrounded by the flashy lights of New York City is nothing short of a dream. It's a moment straight out of a 2000s romcom, with two souls soaking in the love and the breathtaking view, the excitement of being there together, creating memories that'll last a lifetime. It's more than just a date; it's an experience of a unique date night.

Dine on top of the city

Valentine's Day celebrations were elevated to new heights for couples in 2023 with an exclusive dining experience atop the Empire State Building's 102nd floor. Dubbed "Empire for Two," this romantic rendezvous, crafted by Chef Morgan Jarrett of STATE Grill and Bar, crafted an unforgettable evening for one fortunate couple. Inspired by the timeless romance of the movie, "Sleepless in Seattle," where Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks' characters share a fateful encounter on the Empire State Building, this experience had both elegance and charm.

After undergoing a lavish makeover in 2019, the observatory now showcases breathtaking panoramas of New York City from a soaring height of 1,250 feet, courtesy of its floor-to-ceiling windows. This revamped setting set the stage for an unforgettable romantic experience.

Dreamy dinner against New York City's skyline

For a fee of $10,000, lovebirds were able to indulge in a private tour of the 86th-floor observatory, complete with glasses of champagne before ascending to the 102nd floor for an exquisite dinner. This enchanting opportunity promises to be the ultimate declaration of love against the iconic skyline of New York City.

Within the cozy confines of the 102nd-floor observatory, the lucky couple will be treated to a serenade by a musician while savoring a delectable three-course meal curated by Chef Morgan Jarrett. Drawing inspiration from the colors of love, Jarrett has concocted a menu featuring festive delights like a radicchio Caesar salad and a tantalizing cheesecake adorned with cherry compote.

This culinary journey was as sensational as the views outside, which have been hailed as some of the finest globally. Gone are the days depicted in the classic film "An Affair To Remember"; instead, lovebirds can bask in the modern-day charm of this iconic landmark, creating memories that rival those of any silver screen romance.

What was on the menu?

Chef Jarrett, who runs the kitchen at STATE Grill and Bar on the ground floor, had put together a special three-course menu for a more affordable $89. The meal started with a tasty cornbread and caviar appetizer, featuring jumbo lump crab, heirloom cornbread, and a dollop of crème fraiche, a delicious way to kick off your dining experience. It was finished off with a "Sleepless in New York" cocktail, which was served in a special Empire State Building martini glass.

Whether you dined high above the city or enjoyed a delicious meal downstairs, the love in the air is bound to make every moment special.
