East and West Midlands Travel Card Announced

A travel card has been announced that is set to cover the East and West Midlands areas.

The scheme is set to replace the West Midlands' Swift card and Nottingham's Robin Hood travel card, and will likely be extended through to non-city regions in the near future.

Local authorities across the East and West Midlands estimate that the scheme will come at a cost of £20m, that has been requested from central Government.

A system similar to TfL’s Oyster card system is being proposed to cover the Midlands region, with talks of including rental of e-scooters in the system.

“The introduction of the Swift card in the West Midlands has been a great success, with more than 50 million journeys undertaken last year. But although the card is the biggest of its kind outside of London, we must always look to keep improving.

“Not only will this funding from Government allow us to cap payments to ensure better value for money, but it also means we could integrate the technology with our new e-scooter trial and soon-to-be announced bike share scheme, allowing seamless travel on all modes of transport across the region.

Ep 51. Diversity, equality and representation with Stuart Love, Chief Executive of Westminster City Council

It is the role of local government leaders to make the decisions that will best deliver for the communities that they represent. That much is obvious.

How can they do this, however, if they are not accurately representative of those very communities?

Great strides have been made in ensuring that everyone, regardless of their ethnicity, race, gender, or social class is represented in some way within local government. Chief Executive of Westminster City Council Stuart Love joins host Dan Benn to talk about why this work is important, the different work that is being done in Westminster, and how his background influences his stance on equality and diversity.

Emerging technologies

Emerging Technologies Online Conference

For the UK to keep up with new trends and technology there must be a rapid change in policies, adoption, and attitudes to avoid being left behind in an increasingly connected world. In this ever-changing world there needs to be a shift in how these technologies are adopted and legislation put in place to match the speed of these growing markets.   The UK Government is beginning to take steps with new departments such as the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology being established in February 2023, but as the emergence of new technologies like AI causes concern amongst citizens, what more needs to be done to ensure the interests of the public and businesses are considered?

East Midlands Trains expands smartcard scheme

East Midlands Trains is expanding its smartcard scheme.

The scheme allows monthly and annual East Midlands Trains season tickets to be stored electronically on a StagecoachSmart travel card, instead of on a paper ticket.

The train company – part of transport operator Stagecoach Group – has installed smartcard readers at 26 stations across its network and initially introduced the scheme to existing season ticket holders, allowing them to exchange their paper ticket for a StagecoachSmart travel card.

Now East Midlands Trains is moving on to the next stage of the scheme by opening it up to even more passengers.

From now on, customers who phone the Customer Service Centre on 0845 810 1010 to purchase or renew a monthly or annual East Midlands Trains season ticket will be offered the chance to receive their ticket on a StagecoachSmart travel card instead of a paper ticket, provided they are travelling on the following routes:

  • Sheffield – London St Pancras
  • Nottingham – London St Pancras
  • Nottingham – Mansfield Woodhouse

Alternatively, customers can visit www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk/smart and register for a blank smartcard to be posted out to them.

Once a customer has received their StagecoachSmart travel card, it can be used again and again to store their future tickets which can be loaded on to it by phoning the Customer Service Centre or by using ticket machines at stations.

To use the smartcard, when arriving or leaving a station, passengers simply hold their card over the ITSO smartcard reader on the ticket gates or platform validators to verify their journey.

Launching the new scheme, East Midlands Trains Managing Director David Horne said:

“We are delighted to be launching this scheme – we believe that the introduction of StagecoachSmart travel cards will make travelling with East Midlands Trains even easier.

“We want to make travel even smarter and more convenient for our customers and we will continue to expand the scheme to include more tickets for even more passengers in the future.

“By embracing new technology and continuing to offer good value, high-quality services, we look forward to attracting even more people on to our trains.”

More than 200,000 smartcard transactions are already made on Stagecoach’s bus and rail services each day as the Perth-based company continues to lead the way in working towards Transport Minister Norman Baker’s vision to have all public transport covered by smartcard technology by 2020.

In 2008, Stagecoach launched the UK’s first national rail smartcard pilot on its South West Trains franchise.

Having successfully completed the trial, South West Trains now has live ITSO smart ticketing at around 100 stations on the network.

Stagecoach has also introduced StagecoachSmart travel cards at its bus companies in Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire, Manchester and East Kent & East Sussex after becoming the first major UK bus operator to install smartcard-enabled technology on its entire 7,000 fleet of buses outside London.

In London, all 1,400 Stagecoach buses accept Transport for London’s Oyster Card.

The technology as we have seen hardly ever delivers ..many of the customers want a friendly face offering good customer service / good value and choice of ticket.!

EMR collaborates with disability partnership to launch helpful support cards

  • EMR worked with Communication Access UK to develop travel support cards
  • Free cards are a handy aid for customers to quickly communicate their needs to staff
  • Cards are available to order through EMR's website or Customer Service Centre

East Midlands Railway (EMR) has worked with a national disability partnership to launch a set of cards which aim to help customers quickly communicate what extra support or consideration they require when they travel with the train company.

The EMR TALK cards have been created using guidelines provided by Communication Access UK - an initiative developed in partnership by charities and organisations that share a vision to improve the lives of people with communication difficulties.

The free cards are a handy aid for EMR customers to better communicate their needs to the operator so its staff can act quickly to offer the bespoke service they require.

Examples of the messages on the cards include ‘where are the toilets?’ ‘Please face me and speak clearly’ & ‘I have a disability, please be patient’ - plus many other prompts.

The reverse of the cards have a section for the customer to include their name and an emergency contact number -  should they wish to.

Customers can order these cards free of charge, and they are available on EMR's website or by contacting its Customer Service Centre.

TALK

Dave Meredith, Customer Service Director at East Midlands Railway said he hoped the cards go a small way to help provide customers with extra peace of mind when they travel with EMR.

He said: "Good communication means not just talking but also listening and understanding what others say to us.

"Our customers might have a tough time asking questions, naming things, or seeking help, and others may have trouble speaking clearly, making it hard for others to understand them.

"We train our staff to make sure they understand these issues and these cards are another helpful way we can make sure our customers get the support they require.

"They allow travellers the option to use a quick visual prompt for help and we look forward to hearing from the people using them to see how they get on."

Steve Jamieson, Chief Executive Officer of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, said: “Communication difficulties are often invisible, making encounters with train staff more challenging. These simple cards, and the Communication Access UK training, should help to ensure that EMR staff know to give some customers that extra bit of time and space to communicate in their own way. This is a small change for staff which could make a big difference to the millions of people in the UK who have difficulty communicating.”

A small example of the cards available are below. A wider selection can be viewed on EMR's website here: https://www.eastmidlandsrailway.co.uk/form/talk-passenger-assistance-cards

Shay Kang: Mother charged with murder of 10-year-old girl

  • Published 3 days ago

Shay Kang

The mother of a 10-year-old girl who was found dead at a house has been charged with her murder.

Shay Kang was discovered fatally injured at the house in Rowley Regis, West Midlands, on Monday afternoon, police said.

Jaskirat Kaur, also known as Jasmine Kang, of the same address in Robin Close, was charged with murder.

The 33-year-old appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Toys at the scene

Ms Kaur spoke only to confirm her name and date of birth and was remanded into custody to next appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Thursday.

She was not required to indicate any plea to the murder charge which alleged she unlawfully killed Shay on Monday.

Tributes including toys and cards have been laid beside the police cordon on Robin Close.

One message at the scene said: "Shay you will be forever missed and always in our thoughts."

Shay attended nearby Brickhouse Primary School where staff described her as bright and fun-loving.

"Our school is deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our children," the school said.

"Shay was a bright, happy, fun-loving child who was well liked by all and she will be very sadly missed by everyone."

Balloons being released into the air

A balloon release was held in Shay's memory on Tuesday.

Jess Sheppard, whose child attended school with Shay, said the youngster did not have a bad bone in her body.

A fundraiser has been set up to raise money for Shay's funeral and more than £3,100 has been pledged.

The organisers said they were members of the Brickhouse community and wanted people in the area to come together after her death.

A cordon was still in place at the house after police were called on Monday at about 12.10 GMT and a post-mortem examination would be held in the future, Det Insp Dan Jarratt said.

"Our thoughts remain with Shay's family and friends. Her tragic death has had a profound impact on those who knew her as well as the wider community," he added.

"We ask that they are left to grieve in private as our enquiries continue."
