As explained earlier, the trek starts straight off the road and takes you on the trail with a small climb. The hike is approximately 1.5-2 kms one way and will take around an hour to complete .

After the initial 5 mins climb, the route leads a trail to an off-road path of stones and pebbles; you continue here for another 20 mins, and the way that leads to steps ; this is the final section of the route leading to the fort’s main Darwaza.

Once on top, in the monsoon season, you will find a vast lake and fog throughout. A local villager sells tea and snacks, which you can indulge in after finishing the hike.

If you are lucky, during heavy rains, you can also witness a reverse waterfall on one of the fort’s sides, which is a sight in itself!

Korigad fort trek is an easy level trek located about 20 km from Lonavla in Pune district. The topmost point on the trek is about 3028 ft above sea level. The actual date of it’s of construction is not known but likely predates 1500.

Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great Maratha ruler incorporated Korigad, Lohagad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona in 1657. It is mentioned that this fort was taken over by the Pant Secretary in the year 1700. The Peshwas later captured it and was used for government detention.

On 11th March 1818, Colonel Prother of the British Empire tried to take over this fort by laying a seige. The siege was prolonged yet he had no success. He finally succeeded by igniting the ammunition by a cannonball. Korigad fort fell in the hands of the British. Korigad get’s it name from the temple of Goddess Korai whose temple can be seen inside the fort.

The fort stands tall at 3028 ft above sea level, over 660 ft higher than the neighboring valleys. There are two lakes on top of the fort and they are said to be not fit for drinking.

Rock cut steps lead you to the fort. The fort has a huge plateau on top where the two lakes reside. There is a temple of Koraidevi and many other temples of Vishnu and Shiva. One of the temples has been recently renovated with a 3 foot high tower of lamps.

The fortifications of the Korigad fort trek is almost intact. One can walk around the entire perimeter of the fort on these walls. The entrance of the fort is still intact and is massive. It is called the Ganesh Darwaza. There are several bastions on the south side of the fort. There are six cannons on the fort. The largest one is Laxmi Toph and is located next to the temple. There are remains of other buildings on the fort as well.

There are a few caves on the way to the Korigad fort trek where water has accumulated. The water in these cisterns is potable. There are a few caves next to the lakes on the fort as well. One of these caves has a water cistern which has potable water.

From the top of the fort one can see Nagfani Tok, Tung, Morgiri, Mruggad, Tikona, Rajmachi, Dhak, Matheran, Prabalgad, Karnala, Manikgad and Mulshi reservoirs.

Peth-Shahpur is the base village or the nearest village to the fort. The trail can not be missed. There’s a sign post marking the start of the trail as well. The short mud trail leads to the rock cut steps which take you directly to the top of the fort.

Korigad Fort Trek – Exciting one day trek near Pune Mumbai (INR 300)

Waterfall at Korigad Fort Trek

Hello to my lovely readers!! Which season do you like the most? Personally, the monsoon season is my favorite as I love bike riding amidst the foggy weather and the lush green surroundings. Monsoon is in full steam and it’s a great time to explore the nearby regions. Are you looking for a one-day easy trek near Pune or Mumbai which will bless you with such lush green surroundings? If yes, Korigad Fort Trek is waiting for you!!!

Korigad Fort

Korigad Fort Trek

Hey Abhi, am I fit enough to do this trek? How would you rate the trek in terms of difficulty? From last year and a half, I have been regularly answering these sorts of questions. I agree that the treks can be categorized in terms of difficulty level, but is fitness the actual barrier for someone to not complete the trek? I believe it’s more about mental toughness to complete it rather than the physical fitness.

Anyways, Korigad Fort trek is a very easy trek located near to touristy town Lonavala. Standing at an elevation of around 920 meters from sea level, Korigad fort top gives some stunning view of the Aamby Valley city along with the Tung and Tikona fort . What’s more exciting about this trek is the route which takes you to the base village of the fort. The entire route is lush green passing through dense jungles and many waterfalls falling in the vicinity.

How to reach Korigad Fort from Mumbai and Pune

Korigad Fort lays 20 kms south-east of Lonavala. Lonavala is well connected to other parts of the country via railways . On reaching Lonavala, you can inquire for a bus that goes to Aamby valley/ Peth Shahapur (base village of Korigad fort trek). The frequency of the buses is quite low, so plan accordingly.  Get down at Peth Shahapur bus stand, the Korigad fort trek starts from here. I would suggest you to rent a bike from Pune/Mumbai/Lonavala to reach the base village as the road journey amidst nature will leave you spellbound.

Note : If you are referring to Gmaps to reach Korigad Fort, don’t type in Korigad Fort as it shows you the route from inside the Aamby valley where you won’t be permitted to go. Just put in Peth Shahapur on Gmaps to get to the exact location from where Korigad fort trek begins.

The difficulty level of Korigad Fort Trek

I would rate Korigad Fort Trek as an easy level trek; it’s a perfect trek for the beginners. It is perfectly suitable for all age groups; you can take kids and elder ones in your family as well. There are mainly two trekking routes to reach the top; one from Peth Shahapur and the other from Ambavane village. The route from Peth Shahapur is easy and the most preferred one.

My journey to Korigad Fort Trek

It was my second visit to the Korigad Fort; previously I visited the fort a year back in the month of October. Looking at the route to reach the fort, I knew I was definitely coming back in the next monsoon; to experience the foggy climate and lush green surrounding which was missing in October.

Beautiful Landscape Korigad Fort Trek

Lush green surrounding on way to Korigad fort

Owing to heavy rains from the last couple of weeks in Pune, I thought there couldn’t be a more perfect time to have a visit to the Korigad Fort. I along with my friend started from Pune around 10 AM. There are basically three routes to reach the base village of Korigad fort from Pune.

  • Pirangut – Maale – Valane – Pomgaon – Peth Shahapur( Korigad fort base village)
  • Pirangut – Chhale – Kolvan – Hadashi – Peth Shahapur
  • Pune – Lonavala – Kurvande – Lion’s Point – Peth Shahapur

We decided to take the Hadashi route and return by Valane route as both of these routes passes through various villages. I always prefer the village route over the highways as they are generally more exciting and full of surprises.

Our decision to take the village route was justified as we were blessed with lush green valleys, breathtaking landscapes, numerous waterfalls and beautiful lakes throughout the route.

It generally takes around 1.5 hours to reach the base village from Pune but owing to the dozens of pit stops we took along the breathtaking route, we made it to the Peth Shahapur (base village) in around 3 hours.

Very low visibility at Lonavala – Aamby Valley Road

Parking is provided just near to the bus stop; we were shocked to know the bike and car parking charges being INR 50 and INR 100 respectively. We decided to park our bikes in a temple nearby (not sure if it’s actually allowed).

The fort was completely covered under the clouds. There are basically two start points; one starts along the huge network tower and the second from the tar road on the left side, passing through the village and taking a right from the temple over there. Anyway, both these route meets at a common point. From this point continue walking for around 10 minutes and you will reach a point where the trail divides into two. Take the right trail and you will need to walk through a jungle. After a few minutes, you will reach the footsteps (around 300 stairs) of Korigad fort.

It generally takes around 30-45 minutes to reach the top from the base village.  Also, there are many shelters all along the trail, which helps to catch your breath. If you are doing the trek in monsoon, just be extra cautious as the route becomes a little slippery. In monsoons, generally there is water pouring from the stairs which adds joy to the trek.

At the top it was very foggy, visibility was very low and heavy winds were blowing. We enjoyed having Maggi and Tea in such chilly and foggy conditions. I had already covered the perimeter of the fort on my previous visit, so opted not to do so.

Foggy weather at Korigad Fort Trek

We started to descend around 5:30 pm and were at the base by 6:00 pm. Owing to heavy rains and dark surroundings, we canceled our plan to take the village route to reach back Pune and decided to take the Lonavala route.

Note: The route from Korigad to Lonavala passes through the tourist spots like Lion’s point, Bhushi Dam , Shivling Point, Shivsagar Lake, Lonavala Lake, and Waterfall.  You can take pit stops at all this point to add delight to the journey. But remember to start early as traffic conditions are very bad in Lonavala especially in monsoon season.

What to see on the Korigad Fort

Apart from the breathtaking view of Aamby Valley and the surrounding region, there are a few other spots which are worth a visit.

  • A temple to its patron goddess Koraidevi which has been renovated recently.
  • The fort has 6 six cannons among which the largest one is called Laxmi Toph and is located near the Koraidevi temple.
  • There are two lakes on the top of the fort.
  • One can enjoy walking along the entire perimeter of the fort (about 2 kms).
  • In monsoon, you can enjoy the view of the waterfall falling from this fort.

In the monsoon, a few villagers set up their tents at the top and provide basic food like Poha, Vada Pav, Maggi, and Tea. At the base also there are a few small Dhabas which provide local food.

One can set up a tent anywhere on the top, but remember the winds are pretty strong in the monsoon season.

The tent that I carry during the treks is Quechua Arpenaz 2 Tent . It has enough space for 2 people.

korigad trek distance

The Korigad fort trek can be done at any time of the year. Personally, I would recommend you to do this trek in the monsoon season, as the entire region is lush green and experiencing the foggy weather at the top is a moment to remember. In summer season it becomes excessively hot at the top, so try to do the trek early morning.

The Korigad Fort Trek

Photo of Vatsal Nandu

I have promised myself that I will go for a trek every month, and to keep that promise I had decided to go for the Korigad trek organised by a group called ‘Karma’. I took a membership of this group few months back to attend their events.

Like every other office going person, I too wait for the weekend after 5 grueling days of work (in my case 5.5). This weekend was the awaited Korigad Trek near Lonavala. Before going for a trek I always like to do my research on the trek, the place, the trail etc. I found out that Korigad Fort is about 3,000 ft. above sea level, which I consider suitable for treks of easy grade, and also, it was or shall I say “is” one of Shivaji’s fort like any other forts in Maharashtra.

Let’s get on with the trek now. We were told to report around 6:30 am at Andheri station from where we were about to leave for Fort Korigad on a bus, and like every other Indian we too were of course late! The buses took off around 7:15 am and then started the awkward bus journey with a bunch of strangers. The bus journey in the first 30 mins was a bit of slow and silent, but really started buzzing as we played the classic Indian travelling game, “dumb charades!” You’re not truly an Indian if you can’t play dumb charades. The later half of the bus journey continued with these games. We reached our base point at 11:30 am a bit late because of the unusual traffic and the breaks.

Throughout the bus journey the weather was playing games, one minute it was raining, the other minute bright sunshine, I was hoping it would drizzle a bit so the trek becomes a much easier. To my surprise, there were more than 300 people for the trek. A lot of us have been caught by the trekking bug perhaps.

Anyway, we started our trek to conquer the Korigad Fort! Walking our way past the lush green forest was really a treat, but not for my shoes as the trail was muddy and very slippery. It started drizzling as we were walking upstairs, I wasn’t really carrying a heavy backpack just had water to drink, food for lunch and a cell phone to click selfies. So, wasn’t really worried about the rains, in fact, it felt better when it started drizzling, because trekking in sunny weather is very tough, speaking from experience. On the flip-side, it got tougher to walk in the rains because my shoes couldn’t really get a grip and trail got much more slippery. The trail was about 30-40 mins long, and then there were just steps to walk, which took its toll on some of the trekkers. Trust me these steps aren’t really easy to cover if you’re a first-time trekker. We nearing the top of the fort, I think we covered more than 300 steps to reach the top. It took us just over an hour to reach the top and OMG what an amazing view from the top, the cloudy weather, cool winds and drizzle. It’s a treat for any traveler. There’s an unhindered view on all sides with a view of many other forts and dams. The fort is pretty big, there’s temple of goddess Korai Devi and two beautiful lakes as well. The wall of this fort is completely intact and one can walk along its entire perimeter (about 2 km). Its massive gate is also intact. Several ruins of older structures within the fort still exist. One can also see some of the cannons lying on the fort.

After exploring the fort for a while we decide to sit down at a point and have our lunch. Then we sat around on top relaxing for around half an hour. We decide to walk a bit exploring the fort again and taking pictures at different locations. Just as we were clicking pictures it started raining heavily and within few mins the entire fort was covered in fog, and it looked simply amazing, one cannot see more than 4-5 meters. It rained heavily for almost an hour, but the fog continued to prevail, just as we were about to start the descent, something felt incomplete, to come on top and not to have onion bhaji's is a crime! We then bought corn and onion bhaji's from the villagers to treat ourselves.

The descent was comparatively easier but, you could see the rainwater flowing down the steps as we were descending. The route became much muddier and was a bit tricky, we completed our descent in about 40 mins. and reached at the base point at 4:30 pm.

After changing and everything we then started our journey back and stopped in between for refreshments for around 30 mins. We reached our stop around 10 pm because of the traffic it took us much longer than what we expected.

All in all, I must say it was a trek worth everything, especially the view on top of the plateau. You always learn something from every trek, I learned that I definitely should not use converse for my next trek! I would recommend the beginners to start off from this trek.

Don’t be a tourist, be a traveler.

Bhatakna.com  invites you to the Korigad fort trek 2023

Korigad  (also called Koraigad, Koarigad or Kumwarigad) is a hill fort located about 20 km (12 mi) south of Lonavla in the Pune district, Maharashtra, India. Its date of construction is not known but likely predates 1500. It is about 923 m above sea level.[1] The planned township of Aamby Valley is built over the fort's southern and eastern foothills. The closest village is Peth Shahpur, about 1 km (0.62 mi) north of the fort.

History: This fort was forcibly taken over into his kingdom by Chhatrapati Shivaji along with the forts of Lohagad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona in 1657. On March 11, 1818, Colonel Prother tried to take over this fort but even after a prolonged siege could not make any headway. Finally on 14 March, by igniting the stored ammunition by means of a loose cannonball he succeeded and this fort went to the British. The fort is located about 923 m (3,028 ft) above sea level, rising over 200 m (660 ft) higher than the neighboring valleys. To the east, there lie two artificial lakes part of the Aamby Valley project which later drain into the Mulshi reservoir. There are two lakes on the top of the fort.

  • Some FAQS about KORIGAD Trek

Basic Info : Korigad is a beautiful hill fort located at around 20 kms from Lonavala near Amby Valley. This is a fort which you can visit during any time of the year for one day treks. Some of the structures on the fort are still intact and the views that one would get from the top are just splendid.

Routes : From Pune, one has to head towards Lonvala via the Old Pune-Mumbai highway. Please do not take the expressway as you will have to pay a heavy toll on that road.  Once you get to Lonavala, you have to take a left from Purohit Chikki centre and take the Amby valley road. If you are referring to GPS on the way,  google maps will show you a road through Amby valley. Do not take that road as the security guys will not let you in if you tell them that you are heading to Korigad.

Korigad Route

Difficulty Level and oher useful tips : Difficulty level is easy. It takes just 1 hour to get to the top of the fort.  Once you start from the base village, for 15 minutes you will need to walk through a jungle and then there are just steps to get to the top. You will definitely enjoy the view of Amby valley that you get while trekking.

Korigad Photos

What to see on the fort :

  • 2 Lakes on the fort - These are filled with water all the time, except in the summer season
  • Temple of goddess Korai Devi
  • Walls of the fort - These walls are still intact and you can do a circle around the trek on these walls.
  • Six Bombard Cannons - These are the old cannons which used to be used during the early ages in Wars. 5 are small in size and the largest is located near the Koraidevi Temple.
  • Beautiful views from the fort

Camping Info : Although we did not camp here, we think its a pretty good fort for camping. There are plenty of open spaces on the fort where you can set your campsite.

There are plenty of Monkeys on the fort, but they would not be a problem during the night time. During the daytime, just ensure that you do not show them any eatables.

If you do not have tents, the Koraidevi temple can be used as a shelter and can accomodate atleast 10. The villagers at the base village can help you with firewood and to carry you stuff to the fort.

You can refer to the below link for equipment for trekking. Things to carry for overnight treks .

People Also Ask

Does one need to be fit in order to trek.

Not at all. One just needs to be reasonably healthy and have a liking for walking in the wilderness with a sack on your back. This basic level of fitness can be easily achieved by moderate exercise for about 15 minutes on a regular basis. That’s all it takes! Being moderately fit also means that you will enjoy the trek more.

How many hours of walking will a typical day of trekking involve?

There is no 'average' value which can be given. It depends on the kind of trek, viz, Himalayan, Sahyadri or a Nature Camp. In Himalayan treks, usually 4-5 hours walking is involved. In Sahyadris, it can be stretch to about 6-7 hours. Nature camps generally involve very less walking.

What kind of clothes should one wear?

Cotton garments, which are not very tight, nor so loose that you end up getting entangled in them while walking, are preferred. Avoid synthetic garments as they will not absorb sweat and and not allow your skin to breathe. Avoid jeans as they can be a nightmare to carry around in case they become wet.
