The Trek Marlin 7 Gen 2 is the second-from-top model in this family of versatile cross-country hardtails.

If you like the idea of the Marlin but some aspects of the 7 don't appeal to you, be it price, components, or some combination of those, there are a handful of lower-cost options available. Those models keep the same frame, but trim costs by downgrading the components and suspension fork.

The Marlin family also boasts two women-specific models that feature a lower stand-over height as well as shorter cranks, narrower handlebars, short-reach brake levers, and women’s saddles. Both the Marlin 5 ($550) and Marlin 6 ($650) are offered in men’s and women’s versions. The cheapest option however, the $480 Marlin 4, is only available in a unisex model.

In this case, when you look at the geometry you can see that this bike is extremely race–capable. The first standout is the 73 degree effective seat tube angle. Paired with a 69.5 degree head angle and 1159mm wheelbase (for our size XL test bike) you get a bike that'll be aggressive and nimble in tight singletrack, yet stable when barreling straight downhill at high speed. These are design elements you're just as likely to see on much pricier bikes made for high level competition. But don't let that scare you away from using this bike for purely recreational pursuits. It's perfect for that as well. In fact, the real gold in this bike is the fact that it's equally good as a casual weekend cruiser as it is an entry level racing bike.

Shimano 2 x 9–Speed Drivetrain

The 2 x 9-speed drivetrain blends Shimano Altus shifters and a front derailleur with the nicer Shimano Acera rear derailleur. The rear derailleur handles the bulk of the shifting load , so using a better rear derailleur with cheaper shifters is a good way to maintain drivetrain performance while still keeping overall price as low as possible.

Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes are more than capable of providing the level of control necessary for pushing your limits on high-speed descents. The bike rolls on aluminum Bontrager Connection hoops wrapped in Bontrager XR2 Comp tires and laced to aluminum quick-release hubs. These wheels aren’t, however, tubeless ready. That shouldn’t be a deal-breaker given it helps keep the final price as low as possible, and any wheelset can be easily converted to tubeless . That said, you don’t need to upgrade to tubeless to ride trails, but it does make for a better experience by allowing you to run lower tire pressure without fear of pinch flats. Lower pressure also softens the bumps and gives you better traction. If you want to make the leap to tubeless, any local bike shop should be able to guide you toward a cost-effective way to make the switch.

Ready to Throw Down

The Marlin 7 may be a cheap mountain bike , but it has the heart of a race steed. Unlike some bikes on the cheap end of the spectrum that cater to the recreational user, this one is aimed firmly at entry-level riders who want a bike that’s affordable yet capable of riding and racing hard. That was readily apparent from the first few pedal strokes. With the aggressive styling of the dramatically sloping top tube and the aggressive fit , this bike can grow with you as your addiction, ambition, and skill set grow. You can easily upgrade the components over time, and since the frame is aluminum, it’ll be able to handle multiple seasons of use.

Out in the woods, this bike does exactly what you’d want when riding hard. Agile steering and impressive shock absorption from the coil-spring RockShox XC30 fork make the Marlin 7 surprisingly adept at traversing extremely rocky and technical trails. It tracks nicely on fast sweeping turns, although on rough terrain it was more difficult to hold the line due to running high tire pressure–I tested this bike as-is without making the tubeless conversion. At just over 31 pounds, it’s not the lightest XC bike but still light and lively enough to clear knee-high logs. If this is making it sound like I loved this bike, that’s because I did. For new NICA racers and dirt-curious riders of all ages, the Marlin 7 is a worthy option.

In todays article we take a look at the all new Trek Marlin 7 2021 model. The Marlin 7 is the beginning of Treks higher end bikes. This bike comes with upper mid-range components and also a inviting price tag of $1,099.99

What is the Marlin?

The Marlin 7 is a crosscountry hardtail Mountain Bike. It is one of Treks most popular selling MTB. The Marlin 7 is the best option you can pick up in their line-up. With other Marlin options offer even more affordable price tags. However this Marlin 7 is the best bang for buck.

Is Trek Marlin 7 a good bike?

For the money you can’t go wrong with this bike.

It has a RockShox Judy fork with 100mm travel, (which is rated 2 out of 5 stars compared to all suspension forks on the market.) While it is powered by a 1 x 10 Deore, FSA groupset, (which is rated 3 out of 5 stars compared to all MTB’s).

This means a FSA Alpha Drive, 28T steel ring, Boost crank. With a Shimano Deore M4100, 11-46 cassette. Combined with the Bontrager Connection rims and 29×2.20″ Bontrager XR2 Comp tires. The bike achieves an 17.62″ climbing gear and 73.66″ largest gear. That’s a 0.61 to 2.55 gear ratio.

Just quick for those of you who don’t know much about gear inches. They typically range from 18 (very low gearing) via 70 (medium gearing) to 125 (very high gearing). So low gearing is for going up hills and high gearing is for going fast.

Anything under 18″ for climbing is ideal for a mountain bike. Sometimes 1x drivetrains are not the most capable for climbing running larger tooth cranks but this Marlin has no trouble here.

Trek claim that this is a “race-worthy mountain bike”, weighing in at 30.4 lbs / 13.8 kg. It is ideal for someone looking for maybe their first mountain bike. And want a serious bike for their money.

The bike comes with all the expected rack mounts, to carry all the gear and accessories for tours. Suspension lockout which helps when riding on road when you need efficiency compared to bump absorption.

On the chainstay you have to option to mount a rear kickstand, to keep the overall look of the bike clean and simple it has internal cable routing. Adding to the clean design, you get the option with Bontrager gear to mount accessories like lights directly onto the stem, thanks to the Blendr Stem.

Marlin 7 2020 vs Marlin 7 2021 vs Marlin 7 Gen 2 2023

What is the difference between the 2020 and 2021 Trek Marlin 7? It has seen some updates. The frame is pretty much the same, with an identical geometry. But the new 2021 model has much better quality components, 2020 having the 2 x 9 Acera, Altus groupset/drivetrain (rated 1 out of 5 stars out of all mountain bikes).

The 2020 Marlin 7 has a better gear range, with both bikes having the exact sample climbing capabilities. The new 2021 model is more limited and will spin out before the 2020 Marlin, because of the 1x drivetrain.

The 2020 also had a different fork, the RockShox 30 Silver TK. While the 2021 model is 300 grams lighter.

Trek Marlin 7 Women’s

The Marlin bikes also come in women’s options, which is perfect! His and her bikes anyone?

This bike has some slight differences compared to the Marlin 7. As a womens bike it comes in smaller sizes with slight adjustments. The frame is still the Alpha Silver Aluminium however it features a low standover. Thanks to the downward curved top-tube.

The women’s option weighs 29.8 lbs / 13.5 kg which is 300 grams lighter. All other components and parts stay the same. For the exception of a different saddle. The Womens Marlin 7 has the Bontrager Ajna 1 Women’s saddle. And the other Marlin 7 has the Bontrager Arvada.

In a nutshell, the main differences is the bikes components. The Marlin 6 has lesser quality components then the Marlin 7. But the Marlin 6 is cheaper by $200.

2021 Trek Marlin 7

The 2021 Trek Marlin 7 is an immensely popular bike in the Trek lineup. The 2021 Trek Marlin 7 is among the most affordable aluminum mountain bikes and it’s a great entry level bike for those who are just getting started.

This particular model has a geometry that is a cross between an XC bike and one with a more upright position which makes it comfortable to ride on those long bikepacking trips.

The frame of the Trek Marlin 7 is made from what Trek calls their Alpha Silver Aluminum, although it’s not the same aluminum from the Excalibur series, it’s still a great material. Using this slightly lower grade aluminum, Trek has found a way to keep the price point low by still allowing for features like a threaded bottom bracket and an integrated headset. They even welded up mounts for a rear rack!

On the XS and S size frames you’ll find a slight bend in the top tube to allow for a bit more stand over clearance for shorter riders but the size mediums and larger will have a straight top tube. Another great feature of the different frame sizes is that the smaller frames get 27.5-inch wheels while the larger sizes get the 29er, something I feel more manufactures should adopt.

The wheels are wrapped with the Bontrager XR2 Comp tires sporting a width of 2.2 inches. Referring to the medium size frame, the 2021 Trek Marlin 7 has a standard geometry chart for an entry level mountain bike. Chainstays are 438 millimeters, a headtube angle of 69 degrees, and a seat tube angle of 71.9 degrees.

The stack and reach dimensions are what give this Marlin 7 the upright riding position. The stack is a respectable 602mm and the reach is 418mm.

The front fork is the Judy from RockShox and allows for 100mm of travel which would most likely be sufficient for bikepacking on most types of terrain. The Judy for also has a turnkey lockout feature so you can make adjustments on the go when riding mixed terrain.

The drivetrain for the 2021 Trek Marlin 7 is a 1×10 setup from Shimano. You get the Shimano Deore M5120 long cage rear derailleur that is matched to the 11t-46t M4100 cassette. The tiny 28t front chainring is turned by an FSA Alpha Drive crankset sporting a 170mm arm length on the smaller frame sizes and a 175mm crankarm length for the medium and larger frames.

A nice surprise from this entry level 2021 Trek Marlin 7 are the Shimano MT-200 hydraulic brakes. Weighing in at 29lbs this aluminum frame mountain bike is a bit on the heavy side though but would make for a great entry level mountain bike as well as a great tool for some weekend bikepacking adventures.

One of the high points of the Trek Malin 7 bike is its light and efficient 1×10 drivetrain. It’s built with an 11-46T cassette.

The RockShox Judy fork on Marlin 7 is a big improvement compared to the SR Suntour forks found on other lower-priced Marlin models.

Hey Miguel, in my opinion, the stock pedals are perfectly fine. The only reason why you might want to change them is if you want to switch to clipless shoes and pedals. Otherwise, stick with the stock ones and enjoy your trip!

Where It Could Go Better

There’s always room for improvement, right?? The Marlin 7 bike is a fantastic base model, don’t get me wrong, but there are a few tweaks we would make if put in charge of Trek for the day (what do you say, Trek?).

2×9 Drive Train

This is a positive for a lot of people. It simplifies shifting, gives you peace of mind that your cog can handle all the gears, and will provide enough gear space for most users.

However, for the more vigorous riders, you could be disappointed. 

On those gnarly fast downhill runs, you might feel like you run out of gears. With a single drive train bike, you won’t have a huge array of gearing options to choose from.

Take a look at the Marlin 6 model for a bike with more gears. 

Things could go better with the coil fork. The 100mm travel distance won’t be enough for riders at the end of the bikes 300lb weight limit spectrum.

The turnkey lockout feature is quick and easy to use and the preload function is handy, yet the usability nearly stops there. 

For a wider range of tuning and a plusher plunge, you’ll certainly want to upgrade. There are forks out there that feature a travel distance of over 200mm.

That’s double that of the RockShox Judy on the Marlin.

Ideal Rider for The Marlin 7

The Marlin 7 was made for the ready rider that wants an adaptable mid-level mountain bike.

This will be the person who might want a commute vehicle that is capable of shredding the trail.

It would also be a stellar choice for the person interested in getting into mountain bike racing. 

When it comes to racing, a bike can win or lose a race for you. In trail competitions, you’ve got maybe 100 yards or so of open space before diving into dense woods and skinny single track.

This bike can kick off with a throttle like acceleration and stick with the pack. And when you get into some dirt, it can handle about anything you throw at it. 

This intermediate-level bike was made for riders of the following decree:

• Leisure trail pursuers  
• Mid-range shredders
• Off-road commuters
• Aspiring racers

What this bike wasn’t made for is downhill racing. For that, you’d want a frame with full suspension to be able to handle the abuse of the slope.

It probably also isn’t the best model bike for the leisurely rider that just wants to cruise on the boardwalk.

Find a groovy hybrid, paint some flowers on it, and release this Marlin back to the trail it belongs on.

Make The Most Out of Your Trek

With the base model Marlin, you’ll have a very capable bike. But when you’re ready for an advanced ride, there are some upgrades you can make. 

Upgrade those platform pedals to clip-ins. If you aren’t ready to feel like you are cemented to your bike (it’s not that bad, just takes some getting used to) then opt for toe cages. 

Swap out the fork for a more beastly choice to tackle serious trail debris. 

Other changes to consider down the line for more serious riders:

? Stem : add a custom touch to fit your unique body size. Longer stems are great for putting you in a more streamlined position for racing and speedy riding. 

? Seat : the lower the profile and the lighter the seat, the better. Though if you’re a rider that’s counting bike weight down to the gram, you need to pony up for the more expensive Treks. 

? Grips : get a set that’s more durable and comfortable for long rides or iron grips. 

? Seat post: go for a dropper post for the most adaptable riding. Like an office chair, this seat post will adjust up or down by use of a remote or lever.

This allows the rider to manipulate their center of gravity for the most fluid riding on technical trails. 

? Tires : if you’re rolling on trails with heavy debris, think of upgrading the tires to prevent flats and punctures.

You can also chub out your tires to 2.4s, but that’s about as large as you can go. You can also get crazy and convert to tubeless. 

? Fork : for the hefty riders, you can think about upgrading to a more robust front fork for better shock absorption for your weight. 

Why would you want to upgrade these elements? On the base model, they’re solid. But they aren’t gladiator-level strength.

If you’re putting this bike to the test and hitting the trail every weekend, make sure the bike can keep up with you. Leveling up your bike components is a sure way to do this. 

Don’t stress out though. You can bail on these upgrades if you’d rather keep it cruise-y.

And honestly, if you’re going this heavy on the up-leveling, you might just be due to shell out for a high-level bike model and donate your Marlin 7 to your aspiring-rider cousin. 

3 Alternative Recommendations for the Trek Marlin 7 Bike

You’re still going to get the benefits of internal cable routing, hydraulic disc brakes, and a coil spring fork with 100mm of travel.

• Wheels: Bontrager Connection 27.5” – 29”, Max tire size is 2.4”
• Shifters: Shimano Altus M315
• Crankset: Shimano M315

The Marlin 6 weighs a few more pounds than the 7, but it won’t be of much notice unless you’re picky about it.

Overall, it’s a zippy little bike that can get you going on the trails. This is the bike for those beginner mountain bike riders that aren’t ready for the more aggressive race-like posture of the Marlin 7!

Norco Fluid HT2

This cross country bike by the Canadian brand, Norco, is about on the same level as the Marlin 7.

Though you’re paying about the same amount for another intermediate bike, there are some serious differences between the two.

You’ll get the same Shimano Deore shifters but gain an improved fork, dropper seat, and nice and chunky 2.6” tubeless capable tires.

The Fluid is a cool looking bike with dark moody colors and a smooth frame with internal cabling.

Where the Marlin 7 was focused on beginner racers, the Fluid applies best to the rider wanting to have fun on the trail.

• Fork: SR Suntour XCM32 LOR DS 120mm
• Wheels: 29”
• Shifters: Shimano Deore
• Crankset: Shimano Deore

For nearly the same price, these bikes carry their differences.

This Norco does show up with features that the Marlin 7 is missing out on, like the dropper seat! When you are looking for something to grind out dirt and descend like a billy goat, here’s your bike. 

Giant Fathom 29 

The Giant brand is a … giant in the biking industry. Their Fathom 29 is a bike pushing out of the intermediate-range into high-level business.

It’s a smooth, stable, and speedy hardtail meant for tearing up single track. 

Two main upgrades we notice right away on the Fathom compared to the Marlin 7 is increased plunge travel on the air spring fork (130mm) and the inclusion of a dropper seat.

This bike is a nice and hefty step in mountain biking capabilities. 

Choose from a lustrous black or desert sage for color on that ALUXX SL-Grade Aluminum frame.

For the rest of the features, you’ll find:

• Fork: Giant Crest 34 RCL, 130mm, Boost 15×110
• Wheels: Giant AM 29 
• Shifters: SRAM SX Eagle

Spending extra on this bike will get your stiffer wheels for better control, tubeless tires (that flat-free life is where it’s at), and improved ride stability.
