What to Watch

‘Bad Trip’

‘Bad Trip’

Eric André, Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rey Howery pull increasingly wild pranks on unsuspecting members of the public with the help of some hidden cameras in 2021’s Bad Trip . In less than 90 minutes, André manages to include a bloody blender incident, a full-frontal moment at the mechanic and an impressively disgusting projectile vomit scene in a bar filled with real (unlucky) patrons. And that’s just skimming the surface, really, of what Esquire once called “somewhat of a snuff film,” thanks to the near-death experiences André encountered filming Bad Trip . All that being said, you’ve been warned: it’s one crazy ride, so buckle up.

Bad Trip Review: The Sony Liv show has a good backdrop but lacks gripping drama

Bad Trip Review: This Ravi Varma, Krishna Chaitanya, Archana starrer lacks proper thrills

  • Avad Mohammad

Last Updated: 12.10 PM, Mar 10, 2023

Sony Liv's Bad Trip is about Abhi(Krishna Chaitanya), Ved(Ravi Varma), Santosh(Giridhar), and Jo(Ardika Sharma) who have their own issues in life. They meet in weird circumstances and together make a plan to kidnap Reya(Archana Sastry), the rich wife of a business tycoon. But as they kickstart their plan, they come across startling facts about Reay and her background and get stuck in an even more serious problem. What is it and how did they come out of it is the story of the eight-episode series.

Bad Trip is a kidnapping drama directed by Krishnakanth. He narrates the story of four loses in life and gives them a circumstance where they make a big kidnapping plan in order to become rich overnight. The story of each character in the group of four is nicely told in the initial part of the show. The scenes that showcase the prep for the kidnap and the manner in which their insecurities are showcased by the director are the best part. How a group of losers with low confidence attempt a big crime is the basic plot and this setup are impressive.

But it is the mid-episodes that get boring. Once the startling revelation about Archana Sastry's character happens, things get boring. The crime angle and the ones behind the whole setup are not elevated properly. On paper, Bad Trip has an impressive storyline with everyone trying to cross each other for money. But there is no proper emotion in the narration. Sometimes, the series lacks basic seriousness as the threat factor that the kidnappers need to undergo is missing.

image_item

Performances wise it is Krishna Chaitanya who is the best of the lot. He as the carefree rogue does his role convincingly. Archana makes a comeback and shocks us with her role. Her character revelation and the way she plays it in a bold manner are impressive. Giridhar as the tense cab driver was also very good in his role. Ravi Varma gets a good role and he too manages to impress in the last few episodes. Adrika Sharma was just about okay she has not been given the best lines.

One of the biggest drawbacks of Bad Trip is the cuss words used. They flow like water and every other dialogue has a cuss word which was not needed at all. The usage of such language will restrict the watching experience of the show with our family. The character of Jo is only seen using these cuss words which look vulgar after a while. Freedom of language in web series is okay but doing it to this extent is not done at all.

Bad Trip

Also, Bad Trip suffers from the lack of proper conflict points. There is no proper villain and though the reason for it is justified in the end, the lack of a fear factor when a gang goes kidnapping is missing in the show. After a while, things become so easy for the audience to understand what will happen next. There is no wow fact or scenes that will shock you in the series. However, the characters are etched decently. The track of Ved and Jo is nicely thought of and gives an edge to the show.

The entire series is shot at night and the camera work is impressive. The editing is not that great as close to an episode can be chopped off to make things interesting. Music by Gyani Singh is not that great, especially, since the BGM should have been gripping but that is not the case. The production design, costumes, and locations chosen are very good. In a way, Bad Trip has the setup, performances, and chance of revealing great thrills but is made silly with mediocre narration.

Bad Trip has a good premise, a decent storyline, and able performances. But it lacks gripping narration and dragged scenes which is a must for a kidnapping drama. The usage of too many cuss words is also a big put-off and spoils the mood of the audience and makes this series a below-par watch.

Story: On a fateful night that alters their lives, four strangers ride together in a taxi. A once-in-a-lifetime chance to become wealthy appears to bring them more problems than benefits.

Review: Bad Trip, the debut feature by director Krishkan, also known as Krishna Kanth Mamidala, is an uneventful series that alternates between being hilarious, edgy, and just plain okay. The entire plot is tied together by the director’s clever premise, although it isn’t always executed well.

From Bengaluru, Ved (Ravi Varma) has traveled to Hyderabad. He boards a cab driven by Santosh (Giridhar) on his way home from the train station, with Abhi (Chaitanya Krishna) riding along. In the shared taxi, they pick up a fourth person, but they find themselves in an uncontrollable position. They go on a “bad trip” with a dead body, a stolen automobile, a kidnapping, and a lot of money.

The characters are well-established at the beginning of the series. Ved is a gentleman who wants to inform his parents that he is not interested in getting married but finds it difficult to say no. Santosh, a former auto driver, aspires to provide a brighter future for his child and earn an honest income by operating his taxi. The main character disruptor, stuntman Abhi, thinks he’s the “real hero” in every movie. He’s the first to jump at the possibility of making a fast fortune. Archana Shastry, Adrika Sharma, and Prachi Thaker are all included in the narrative; nevertheless, it is best to keep their identities a secret.

Bad Trip starts strong, takes a while to get going, stumbles a little in the actual battle, but picks up steam in the end. At first, the jokes are corny, but as you learn more about the characters and their thoughts, they become funny and captivating. It’s hard not to feel that the conclusion of the eight-episode series should have been far superior. It might have used more editing and better writing because the ending comes off as a little disorganized. All the same, the series works for the most part.

‘Bad Trip’: Eric Andre, Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rel Howery Prank America

By David Fear

It makes a certain kind of sense that Bad Trip, Eric André’s entry into the Gonzo Comedy Hall of Fame (see: Jackass, Borat, Bad Grandpa ), starts in Florida. Not that the other 49 states of this fine U.S. of A. don’t have their share of goofballs, chowderheads, numbskulls, fuck-ups and jag-offs; it’s just that this particular Southeastern one has a reputation for American eccentricity that results in eyes bugging out, jaws dropping and shit going very wrong. Those “Florida Man” headlines are well-earned.

And the “Florida Man” energy is strong in this one, right from the get-go: No sooner has the comedian appeared onscreen, rocking a mechanic’s jumpsuit and washing a BMW in a West Grove car wash, then something genuinely WTF happens. If you’ve seen the trailer, you know it involves a vacuum hose and full frontal nudity. It also involves a customer who has no idea that he’s part of an elaborate prank that’s been set up for several rolling cameras, someone who is neither in on the joke nor the butt of it. The guy is just an innocent bystander who suddenly finds himself in the middle of a situation he hadn’t planned for or even possibly imagined, while a naked man tries desperately not to show his dick and balls to the world. “Florida Man Loses Clothes, Flashes Customers in Bizarre Car Detailing Accident.” Normally, you can’t make this stuff up. André engineers it like he’s in charge of a NASA launch.

The scene is over way, way too soon — a problem that plagues a lot of Bad Trip ‘s gotcha scenarios, but that’s the risk you take when you’re literally putting your ass out there when making variable-heavy comedy — but it still does what it needs to do, i.e. set the tone and set up the “story.” Note the scare quotes; abandon all hope, ye who want a narrative here, which is frankly missing the point. This is no more a movie than The Eric André Show is a talk show. (Though the director, Kitao Sakurai, has also worked on that Adult Swim gem.) It’s a delivery system for strung-together Situationist happenings and performance art, a fancy way of saying that everyday people get co-opted into sometime highly elaborate, often hilarious, remarkably effective smart-comics-doing-really-dumb-and-gross shit. Including, in one case, a bit that may or may not have involved being covered in actual fecal matter. We don’t know just how Jackass things got here.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Right, sorry, the story: So when Chris (André) is cleaning the unsuspecting gent’s car, a second customer drives up. Her name is Maria (Michaela Conlin), and she was Chris’s high school crush. He was going to ask her out, but then whoosh go his clothes. Later, he finds out she lives in New York and runs an art gallery. If he’s ever town, drop by and see her. So Chris grabs his best friend Bud (Lil Rel Howery), they take the pink Crown Victoria that belongs to Bud’s sister, Trina ( Tiffany Haddish ) — she’s in prison, it’s all good — and plan a road trip to visit Chris’s soulmate. When Trina “releases” herself from the clink, she finds out that her car’s been stolen and decides to track these guys down across the Eastern seaboard.

There’s a version of Bad Trip in which you pay attention to this tender story of best friends who’ll do anything for each other, who have their ups and downs but still have each other’s backs, rednecks and psycho siblings and cops be damned. The version you’ll probably want to push to the forefront, however, is the one where these three comedians, respectively and together, stage the kind of truly outrageous shenanigans that make you wonder how the hell they got out of these scenes alive. Looking at my notes, I see nothing but a series of phrases: “Chinese Finger Trap,” “Smoothie Shop Blender,” “Cowboy Bar,” “Projectile Vomiting,” “A Priest,” “The Hamptons,” “Gorilla Selfie.” (That last one is genuinely above and beyond the call of duty.) To try and explain what they mean wouldn’t do the gags justice, though I will say that a sequence involving a a movie-musical number in a mall — which includes singing, dancing, a giant wedding cake and the threat of actual violence — is a work of genius.

In other, the sheer hilariousness of a number of individual bits here are enough to get you past slow spots and a few D.O.A. duds, and you come out of Bad Trip with a serious appreciation for this trio’s chops and ability to go with the flow. (Four, actually: Conlin can more than hold her own when she needs to.) And unlike the Jackass crew’s how-low-can-you-go competitions and Borat ‘s politicized exposés, there’s almost a sweetness to the way these folks prank the public. The everyday folks who find themselves having to deal with angry ex-cons or exchanges spiraling out of control aren’t marks; they’re more like collaborators in the movie’s “what if” set-ups. For every encounter in which you fear that André or Howery or Haddish are actually going to get the snot beat of out of them for antagonizing folks, there are a half dozen examples of people stepping in and defusing things, offering help, trying to de-escalate a blow-up. The end credits roll feature a bunch of “smile, you’re on Candid Camera” reveals that lead to smiles and yelps of “oh my god, that was crazy!” The joke’s not on them. They were just a key part of the trip.

Bad Trip Review

Eric andré takes his prank comedy on the road with lil rel howery and tiffany haddish..

Bad Trip Review - IGN Image

On its surface, Bad Trip is a wacky buddy-comedy with a road trip gimmick pretty similar to the Farrelly Brothers’ hit Dumb and Dumber, in which two doofuses trek across America on a dim-witted quest for love. However, with a slew of pranks that range from silly to surreal, comedian Eric André and company create a spoof that’s slyly sophisticated.

Eric André and Lil Rel Howery (Get Out) star as ride-or-die besties, Chris and Bud. Scraping by in West Grove, Florida, both work jobs that offer more embarrassment than satisfaction, resulting in wild pranks involving nudity, robbery, and sprays of fake blood. Chris fears his life is going nowhere, while Bud is bullied by his pugnacious sister Trina (Tiffany Haddish with a mischievous snarl). But could fate have other plans for them? Like the hero of a romantic-comedy, Chris believes so. Clearly, crossing paths with his high school crush Maria Li (Michaela Conlin) is a sign. Forget that their “meet-cute” is more catastrophic than charismatic. Forget that she seems more polite than interested. Forget the eye rolls of bystanders who can’t deal with Chris’s cringe-worthy pick-up lines. Maria walked into that shop in slow-motion as dreamy music played! Romance must happen! That’s just the law of movies.

So, when Maria says she’s headed back to Manhattan to prepare for her art gallery’s next major event, Chris begs Bud to drive with him to the Big Apple on a quest for love. (Very Harry and Lloyd chasing the Mary who got away to Aspen.) Initially reluctant, Bud not only gives in but also agrees to borrow Trina’s beloved car, a hot pink showstopper with “Bad Bitch” painted across its back windshield. Because she’s behind bars, it seemed a safe plan. Naturally, Trina busts out of jail just after they run off with her ride. So, following the Dumb & Dumber model, she becomes the hardened criminal chasing down two dummies as they drive to a dream scenario.

Along the way, André, Howery, and Haddish pull pranks in character on an array of unsuspecting people in gas stations, smoothie shops, bars, and business meetings. Notably, these aren’t the kind of cruel pranks where a mark is damaged or embarrassed; the chaos here lands squarely on the consenting comedians. Some of these stunts might be familiar to fans of The Eric André Show, which Bad Trip’s helmer Kitao Sakurai frequently directed. Still, the pranks are surprising, strange, and childishly exhilarating. Some play on pure shock value, relishing in the stunned faces of those who think they’ve just witnessed a freak accident or a major crime.

A supreme improviser, Haddish switches from aggressive to cuddly depending on the mark, winning some of the movie’s most passionate -- and hilarious -- reactions. Howrey plays the straight man as André throws himself full-bodied into stunts that leave him a bare-assed buffoon before an unaware audience, who reacts with shock, horror, and -- often -- compassion. His commitment sells the bonkers bits to these real people, even when the seams of a stunt -- or a gorilla costume -- might show. Throughout, Good Samaritans step up with advice, aid, and some scorching real talk.

Amid all the mayhem and bewildered reactions, such witnesses bring a touching tenderness and exciting authenticity to Bad Trip. Some even become crucial characters in the plot. A kindly old man, a vaping Army recruiter, and a nosy restaurant patron step out of the background to create plot points, encouraging dream-chasing, reconciliation, and even revenge! The plot points themselves are cliches. However, Bad Trip has subversive fun by exposing how easily real people fall into these expectations, and how they react when a cinematic flourish follows.

For instance, when Chris is encouraged to pursue Maria, he doesn’t just thank the old man on the bench and walks away. He bursts into song and dance like he’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt in (500) Days of Summer with a concussion. The outrageousness is exposed through the reactions of a mall full of people whose day just went from ordinary to absolutely confounding. Through this, Sakurai introduces a sly commentary of romantic comedies that pays off in a climax that is funny, smart, and gleefully rebellious.

The Best Comedies on Netflix Right Now

bad trip series

André and company give a familiar premise fresh verve with an onslaught of outrageous pranks that would do Jackass proud. André and Howrey share crackling chemistry that weaves together the friendship at the film’s core, while heralded scene-stealer Haddish embodies a badass who can make us cackle. Remarkably, the unwitting witnesses to their mayhem are not regarded just as marks, but as co-stars, who pop with one-liners, memorable reactions, and shining humanity. (Hot tip: stay through the credits to see what happened in real life once the pranks were wrapped.) Within all this, Sakurai winks at movie tropes, while recognizing why these predictable plot points are so satisfying. Like other prank-centered comedies (see Borat 1& 2), there is a clunkiness to the construction, where prank sequences are abruptly abandoned to jump to a new scenario. This makes for a rumbling pace that hinders the emotional throughline. Funky flow aside, it’s impressive how the editing team (Sascha Stanton Craven, Matthew Kosinski, and Caleb Swyers) whittled a coherent comedy plot from the chaos of untold hours of prank shoots and reaction shots. Ultimately, despite its dead ends, Bad Trip is a ridiculously fun ride.

Luca Review

bad trip series

Luca is an ode to friendship. The 84-minute Pixar movie on Disney+, from feature directorial debutant Enrico Casarosa, is inspired by his own childhood — Luca is dedicated to Casarosa's best friend Alberto Surace, whose name he lends to the deuteragonist and the title protagonist's best friend — in the Italian Riviera in the 1970s and 1980s. It's set in a world that takes after the 1950s and the 1960s, for Casarosa doesn't feel as nostalgic (yet) about the eighties. But Luca 's is also a fantasy world. The aforementioned Luca (voiced by Jacob Tremblay, from Room) and Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer, from Shazam!) are actually “sea monsters”, feared and hunted by the humans who live above the surface. Though technically, they are shapeshifting amphibians, that become fish in water, and human on land.

Jason kelce has one major eagles regret after retiring.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

There’s one aspect of Jason Kelce’s retirement that eats at the future Hall of Fame center.

“The one thing I’m disappointed about retiring right now is I’m retiring when the Eagles had potentially the biggest collapse in the history of the organization. Not potentially, probably the most,” Kelce said Wednesday on the “New Heights” podcast he hosts alongside brother Travis Kelce.

“The reason I say that I’m upset about that is — I really truly think the Eagles are going to ball out next year.”

Jason Kelce announced his retirement Tuesday.

Kelce’s career ended with the Eagles going from a 10-1 juggernaut with the best odds to win the Super Bowl to being shellacked 32-9 by the Buccaneers in the wild-card round of the playoffs to complete their collapse.

Philadelphia lost six of its last seven games, including the playoff defeat, in its quest to return to the Super Bowl for the second straight season.

The once-great Eagles offense did not perform as expected, with quarterback Jalen Hurts regressing, and the defense cycling through coordinators to no avail.

“There’s still a tremendous amount of talent there,” Kelce said. “They’ve hired two really good coaches that are going to be able to offer a new perspective and look at things with a fresh lens.

“I think Jalen Hurts is a tremendous quarterback, I know it wasn’t a good end of the year for him or for anybody on offense, but there’s still so many pieces.”

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman listens to Jason Kelce's retirement speech.

The Eagles now enter the offseason with plenty of questions, especially since they have a massive hole up front with Kelce not returning.

Philadelphia also is bracing for longtime defensive stalwart Fletcher Cox potentially retiring.

Kelce and Cox have been anchors of the Eagles’ sustained success.

“There’s plenty of cap space,” Kelce said. “I know (general manager) Howie (Roseman) is going to make some moves to improve the things that need to get fixed.”

The collapse and relative roster uncertainty has the Eagles with the eighth-best odds (17/1) at FanDuel to win Super Bowl 2025, and behind fellow NFC Contenders in the 49ers, Cowboys and Lions.

While expectations likely will not be as high for the Eagles entering the 2024 season as they were for this past season, Kelce still believes in his ex-teammates.

“I just really think there is going to be one hell of a bounce back from the Philadelphia Eagles next year, and it really pains me,” Kelce said. “I’ll be part of it in some way. I’m still going down to the facilities and I’m still going to help out any way I can, but I’m also going to be doing other things and I’m not going to be on the field doing it with those guys. But I can damn sure at least appreciate it from afar. That is one thing I’m really upset about the timing of, but it is what it is. I’ll have to enjoy it in a different way.”

Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief in Halo season 2 standing shirtless holding onto a chain for some reason

The Halo TV series bailed on its best chance yet to actually take us to a Halo ring

Reach has fallen in the Halo TV universe . If you know anything about the lore of the Halo games, you know that the next thing that’s supposed to happen is Master Chief escaping from Covenant forces above Reach, his ship getting attacked, and then promptly crashing onto the series’ first Halo ring. In other words, this is basically the moment where the action starts. That is not what happened in the Halo TV series. Instead, Chief (Pablo Schreiber) and his friends took a reflective excursion to a backwater planet that felt a lot more like a detour than character development.

After escaping Reach , Chief and everyone else on the escape ship with him (which is basically all of the still-living series regulars except for Kate Kennedy’s Kai), visit Aleria, a small dirt farming planet with plenty of land to spare and nearly toxic soil. After an episode as big and exciting as the Fall of Reach, this feels like a very HBO-style respite: the kind of episode dedicated to taking stock of the characters we lost and examining the new shape of the world after a big shake-up. But those shows earn those reflective episodes with consistent quality before them, and they tend to make those quiet episodes feel ever bigger and more important than the loud ones. That was certainly not the case in Halo season 2’s fifth episode.

Pablo Schreiber and Bokeem Woodbine in Halo as Master Chief and Soren stand on a barren planet talking

In defense of the Halo series’ entire premise, it has no obligation to follow the events of the games directly. Since the show’s announcement, the creative team behind it has been careful to specify that this series takes place in the “Silver Timeline,” which is completely separate from the canon of the games. So going somewhere other than Halo after the Fall of Reach isn’t really a problem. The problem is that the show once again fails the most basic and important test of doing interesting things with those changes.

The series seems convinced that the audience loves and cares about its side characters. But they’re just not interesting. During this episode the most coherent plotline we spend time with involves Soren (the wonderful Bokeem Woodbine, trying his best as always) and his wife searching for their child. We see them question various people around the village, and even find someone they think is keeping their kid from them. But by the end of the episode, they discover that he was actually kidnapped by the UNSC — an organization we almost exclusively know at this point as the military that loves kidnapping children. It’s a bland, “no shit” reveal that feels both too obvious and totally meaningless at the same time. Another of the episode’s plotlines involves Riz, a Spartan who was introduced just a few episodes ago, deciding that she wants to be a farmer now that she is too injured to be a Spartan.

With plotlines this boring, about characters that the show never really does a good job of convincing us to care about, it’s getting awfully hard not to long for the circular perfection and alien weirdness of the Halo rings that give this franchise its name. So why aren’t we there yet?

The answer seems to lie in the Halo show’s approach to the rings in general. The series clearly recognizes one of the great strengths of the first game was that Halo was profoundly mysterious. But the show is approaching that mystery in a very different way than the original game did.

Fiona O’Shaughnessy as Laera in Halo season 2 stands wrapped in a blanket with two people talking behind her on a porch

For the game, the mystery of Halo was in how little information you had about both the alien ring and the video game’s world. Aside from the basic premise of humanity being on the back foot in a war against aliens, almost everything else was a black box. So when you crash-land on Halo in the game’s second level (a level also called “Halo”), the path is clear for the game to slowly reveal its secrets about Forerunners, the Covenant religion, the Flood, 343 Guilty Spark, and everything else that feels commonplace in the series today. The TV series, on the other hand, decided to make Halo a destination. Instead of giving us no lore, it’s been stacking up piles and piles of lore through its first two seasons and dangling the Halo ring in front of his via characters’ prophetic visions. This path to Halo isn’t inherently bad; a well-done buildup and reveal can make for a fantastic moment in a TV show. But like the Hatch in Lost , the key is that you have to show the audience why the thing is mysterious and important — you have to really prove it to us, not just have characters bombard us with insistent dialogue that it matters. And more importantly, the characters actually have to get into it eventually.

None of this is to say that the show has run out of time to make it to Halo, or even that it can’t be good once it gets there. But it is to say that the journey there so far has felt profoundly misjudged and way too slow, and it’s starting to feel like it might not happen at all. In this episode, Makee (Charlie Murphy) tries to convince the Arbiter to go to the Halo rings because she insists that the Prophets are lying about the Great Journey, telling the rest of the Covenant fanciful stories about its importance and transcending the physical realm, but never actually planning to take them along on their trip to divinity. Now, I’m not saying that the Halo series is the Prophets and we’re the rest of the Covenant, but I am saying that our lack of a journey to a Halo ring is starting to feel a little suspicious, and they’re running out of time to convince me we’re really going.
