Puerto Vallarta whale watching season

bay of banderas puerto vallarta

Every year, thousands of humpback whales migrate from the Arctic , leaving the cold waters and swimming more than 3,000 miles to give birth and nurture their young in the warm tropical waters around Mexico.

The sheltered waters in the Bahia de Banderas, where Puerto Vallarta is located, offer the perfect conditions for the whales and for you to see them thrive in their natural habitat.

The Puerto Vallarta official whale-watching season begins in December and ends in late March. However, sometimes whales can be seen as early as November, or the whales don’t leave the sheltered bay until April.

Still, the best time to see the whales in Puerto Vallarta is during the winter months from December until March, which coincides with the high season in Puerto Vallarta, the most popular time to visit.

Why go whale watching in Puerto Vallarta

humpback whale breaching

Where can you spot the whales in Puerto Vallarta? Is it necessary to book a guided tour on a boat, or can you see them from the shore?

Of course, the chances of seeing a humpback whale are best when you take a whale-watching tour.

By joining a whale-watching tour in Puerto Vallarta, you’ll get a closer look at the whales than you would from shore! Plus, the tour guides will provide interesting information on whale behavior.

When on the boat, it’s pretty easy to spot the whales. Just watch out for the apparent hump on their backs and the long dorsal fins. Often, you can see their fluked tail on the water.

If you’re lucky, you will even have the chance to watch the whales breach as they leap from the water and flop back to the surface. The crash will send water in all directions, so ensure you don’t get your camera wet when taking pictures!

What kind of whales are in Banderas Bay?

orcas in ocean

In Puerto Vallarta, you can see one of the world’s most stunning mammals: the humpback whale. Each year, around 18,000 whales travel to Banderas Bay, where they stay for several months.

They are the most common whale species in Puerto Vallarta and can be seen yearly, but humpback whales are not the only marine life you can see here!

In winter, you can sometimes see majestic orcas, and if you’re lucky, you may even spot brides’ whales and minke whales. It’s rare, but I once saw orcas in Puerto Vallarta while coming back on a boat from Los Arcos!

The whales are essential members of the North Eastern Pacific Ocean ecosystem. Even if commercial whaling is banned, they are vulnerable to extinction and constantly endangered by ocean debris, pollution, and entanglement. Therefore, the whales in Puerto Vallarta are protected by law.

Tips for Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta

Whale watching is the experience of a lifetime, but a little preparation goes a long way. Here are some insider tips to make your adventure truly unforgettable.

Choose the Right Time of Day

The best time of day to see whales in Puerto Vallarta is in the early morning, when there is calmer water and less boat traffic. This increases your chances of a more intimate encounter with the whales.

Dress Appropriately

Layers are your friend. Mornings can be chilly, but as the sun rises, you’ll want to shed some clothes. Also, don’t forget a waterproof jacket.

Bring the Right Gear

A good camera with a zoom lens is a must. Binoculars can also enhance your experience. Just make sure both are secured to avoid any overboard tragedies.

Stay Hydrated and Snack Smart

Most tours offer water, but bringing your own reusable bottle is a good idea. Pack some light, non-greasy snacks like fruit or granola bars to keep your energy up. I once went whale watching hungover, and it really dampened the experience. Learn from my mistakes!

Listen to the Experts

Your guides are a wealth of knowledge. Listen closely to their commentary to learn about the whales’ behaviors, conservation status, and more.

Be Patient and Respectful

Whale-watching is a waiting game. Keep a respectful distance and remember that these are wild animals in their natural habitat.

By following these tips, you’re setting yourself up for a whale-watching experience that’s as enjoyable as it is respectful to these magnificent creatures. Now, you’re not just a tourist but an informed and responsible marine observer.

Other marine animals around Puerto Vallarta

  • Mazatlan, a popular beach town further up north, is another excellent place to see humpback whales and ten other species in The Mazatlan-Teacapan zone.

Every winter, about 26,000 humpback whales migrate from the icy waters of the Arctic to the warmer waters of the Banderas Bay in the Pacific Ocean. They spend most of the year bulking up and preparing for their journey. When they get to Puerto Vallarta, they only have one thing in mind: Tequila . I kid. They are only here to mate or give birth.

The bay’s shape protects them from predators, and the warm waters offer the ideal calving conditions.

When baby whales are born, they have very little blubber to keep them warm. Therefore, they must fatten up on mom’s milk for a few months before making the long trek back north.

The gestation period for whales is about 11 months, so the whales that get knocked up in these warm tropical waters return the following year to give birth. And those babies come back to the same place to continue the cycle.

Humpbacks are known for breaching, meaning they thrust their entire body — all 45-55 feet and 35 tons — into the air and then fall back down with the most enormous belly flop in the world.

Fun fact:  No two whale tails are the same. It’s like their fingerprint. It’s also how researchers identify each whale.

When is whale watching season in Puerto Vallarta?

pectoral whale fin

The whale watching season officially starts in December and lasts through March. Sometimes, they come a little early and leave a little later, but don’t count on it. If you are coming here to spot whales, don’t take any chances.

If you plan your trip to Mexico in December and whale watching is on the agenda, make it as late as possible. The opposite goes for March — go as early as possible.

As a bonus, it’s the dry season, so you’ll have blue skies and a 0% chance of rain to ruin your boat trip.

The best time for whale watching in Puerto Vallarta is January and February. We’ve gone in December and March and saw just a few gentle giants, but nothing like what we see in Jan-Feb.

Most tours are held twice per day. The morning slot is typically around 8 am, and the second time is around noon.

Whales aren’t on a time schedule and are pretty active throughout the day. However, various tour operators told us that the morning sessions are better because the day is cooler and the water is usually calmer.

Plus, there is something so serene about being on the water first thing — the morning sun is glorious here.

But truth be told, there aren’t many reasons for me to get up when it’s still o’dark thirty in the morning. Whales are one of them.

whale breach from Puerto Vallarta tour

The whales are so close to shore we’ve seen them while sitting in an oceanfront pool. We’ve even caught glimpses of their spray and tails from our rooftop deck , five blocks from the ocean.

You are probably thinking right now…  If you can see whales from shore in Puerto Vallarta, do you really need a tour?  That’s like saying, “I saw elephants on TV once. Do I really need to see them in Kenya?”

The answer is a very loud YES.

Let me explain why.

The chances of you seeing one from the shore are ok. But you won’t feel the mist from their blowhole on your face. You won’t hear their guttural grunts or feel the waves they create when they pop up next to your boat.

That only happens on a tour, on the water. Plus, it’s your only chance to see them up close and personal.

There are a zillion options for whale watching tours in Puerto Vallarta. From super budget-friendly to the other end of the spectrum, you can find an experience that suits your travel style.

All the tours I’ve been on and recommend are responsible whale watching tours. The captains maintain a safe distance from the giant creatures so we can observe their behavior without disturbing them.

On the other hand, the whales did not receive the memo about keeping a safe distance from humans, and sometimes they surface right next to your boat!

whale face from watching tour in Puerto Vallarta.

I typically avoid working on my ocean-view terrace due to all the distractions (*ahem* whales). However, since I was writing about them, I thought it made sense to give it a whirl. As I was working, I looked up to see a few boats in a cluster, which always means whale action. Then I noticed the mist and a splash and shed a little tear.

As you can imagine, after two whale seasons in Puerto Vallarta and countless tours, we’ve tried it all. We’ve gone on multiple private tours, huge tour boats, small inflatables with marine biologists, and several small private sailboats.

They all have pros and cons. And they weren’t all top-notch tours.

We’ve been lucky to spot whales on some trips, but the crew didn’t seem knowledgeable about finding them.

We’ve been on a sailboat that was too slow to catch up with the whales, so we didn’t see any up close, or even sort of up close.

We went on a tour where seeing whales was not a priority, and the crew showed no interest in catching up with them.

So yeah, all whale watching tours in Puerto Vallarta aren’t created equal.

Last week, we went on a speedboat tour with a marine biologist. At first, I was bummed we didn’t choose a sailboat. I thought that since sailboats were quieter, we wouldn’t disturb the whales. But that didn’t seem to be a problem for the group of hot-blooded males fighting over the lone female (they are mammals, after all).

At one point, they were fighting directly next to our boat. Feeling the mist from their spray kiss my face was magical and pretty emotional.

They were pushing each other out of the way, bumping each other, and slapping their tails and fins in the water, trying to demonstrate their strength and virility for the female.

As with most creatures in the wild, only the strong get to breed. So, it’s up to the males to woo the females, and they do that by breaching, singing, and showing their overall prowess.

After all the fighting, we saw more than 15 whales breach. It literally felt like a show just for us. Even the marine biologist howled in pure delight every time we saw one breach.

I say “just for us” because we were able to quickly motor over to the whales when we spotted them from our speedboat. Only one time, in our four-hour tour, were other boats near us. Had we been in a sailboat, we would have had to stay near the groups of other ships.

Best whale watching tours in Puerto Vallarta

Now that I’ve explained the importance of whale-watching tours and finding the right ones, here are my top five.

humbpack whale watching puerto vallarta

Best for people who want a deep dive into the whale watching season.

 4.5-hours Cost: MXN 1530 ($90)

This is the whale tour with a marine biologist we went on last week. It was on an inflatable boat with a roof for shade. I wasn’t expecting it to be as comfortable as it was, but the bench seats had thick cushions, making it easy to sit for 4.5 hours. Although we didn’t seem to sit for long. Every time a whale performed its magic, we all stood up and cheered as we would have in a football game.

It’s definitely our best whale watching tour in Puerto Vallarta, but we might be a bit biased because we saw the most whale breaches on this tour. We totally hit the whale jackpot.

During our tour, our marine biologist, Thema, took notes and photos of each whale we encountered for their research project. She informed us that one of the creatures we spotted had been missing for a few years, and they were worried something happened to him.

All that info just by knowing the whale’s tail.

  What’s included in this tour?

  • maximum of 20 people
  • a basic sandwich and a drink
  • It’s led by a marine biologist with a master’s degree in marine ecology, a science journalist, or a professional wildlife photographer for National Geographic magazine and Animal Planet. They know their stuff.
  • they guarantee that they’ll give you your money back if you don’t see whales, dolphins, or turtles.

What’s not included?

mom on whale watching tour holding a whale vertebrae

Best for people who get seasick or have tender backs.

3 hours. Cost: MXN 1,747 ($101)

We took this tour last year when my mom was here.

Her back had been bothering her, so we were concerned that a speed boat would be too rough if the waters were choppy. When we were searching for a whale tour with a large stable boat , we found this tour.

It had about 50 people on board, but since it’s a double-decker catamaran (read=super stable like a cruise ship), it never felt crowded.

I had my doubts about actually finding whales on this boat. I mean, it’s not like we could skedaddle right over to whale in the distance. But we saw them from start to finish.

There was a marine biologist onboard, and we heard the whale song from a special hydrophone that she dropped in the water. We also held a whale vertebra that weighed almost as much as my mom.

We were not disappointed by this whale-watching tour at all! In fact, we were pleasantly surprised.

The only downside is that we had to pop from one side of the catamaran to the other a few times to see the whales.

Since we’ve only been living in Puerto Vallarta for two years, we haven’t trained the whales to stay on our side of the boat yet. Maybe next time we’ll bring treats to see if that works ;).

What’s included in this tour?

  • open bar service
  • buffet lunch
  • port fee – $40 pesos per person ($2.30)
  • Pro-Nature Conservation fee approx. 25 pesos per person ($1.25)

Small-Group Whale Encounter Puerto Vallarta

whale tail detail from whale watching in Puerto Vallarta

Best if you’re looking for a shorter whale tour with a small group

3 hours. Cost: MXN 1305 ($75)

This is one of the top-rated small-group Puerto Vallarta whale-watching tours , and it’s budget-friendly (as far as boat tours go). For about $75, you get a three-hour boat ride with a bilingual marine mammal expert.

They use a hydrophone to listen to and track the whales and, if they decide to show up for the day, the dolphins, too.

While on board, you’ll help them conduct their research projects and use the whale tails to identify each individual. They have a maximum of 10 people per boat, so it’s the perfect whale watching in Mexico for a small group.

  • use of hydrophone
  • alcoholic Beverages
  • marina dock fee, paid in cash during check-in ($3.00 or MXN 50.00 per person)

whale watching in Puerto Vallarta tail slap

Best if you’re in Nuevo Vallarta or with a large group who likes to party

4-hours. Cost: MXN 1934 ($112)

If you happen to be staying in Nuevo Vallarta, this whale watching tour is for you. It has two pickup options: one at Paradise Village Public Pier Nuevo Vallarta and the other in Puerto Vallarta’s Puerto Magico.

You’ll spend about four hours on a luxury catamaran that is equal parts party time and whale time tour . It’s a large ship, so you’ll have plenty of space to spread out as you watch for whales with a cocktail in hand.

  • continental breakfast
  • international open bar
  • hotel pickup and drop-off
  • entrance fees (port fees)

Best for people who want their own boat to feel like a baller.

3.5 hours. Cost: MXN 12,308 ($714) for the entire boat.

This is the best exclusive whale watching tour in Puerto Vallarta for ultimate luxury. You’ll have the small speedboat all to yourselves with a maximum of eight people. No need to worry about vying for the best views or which side of the boat to sit on. It’s all yours!

Once your captain and biologist find the whales, you’ll hang out with them at a responsible distance so they aren’t disturbed. And so the day goes until lunch, which is served on the water with a panoramic view of Puerto Vallarta.

  • non-alcoholic beverages
  • professional guide
  • private tour
  • 40 pesos per person port tax, payable at the time of tour check-in.
  • souvenirs (available to purchase)

The most common Puerto Vallarta whales are humpbacks. But every so often, orcas and Bryde’s whales make an appearance.

pectoral whale fin in Puerto Vallarta

You betcha! Not only do all the tours above follow responsible whale watching guidelines, but the Mexican government strictly regulates the tours, and operators must have an official license.

Additionally, when you’re on one of the above tours, you’ll feel how much love the captains and marine biologists have for these marine mammals. They never get too close or stress out the whales.

On our last whale tour, our captain spotted something weird floating in the water. Thinking it might be a whale in distress, we sped over to get a closer look. Thankfully, it wasn’t a whale. But if it was, our tour would have taken on an entirely new mission.

Always. And I mean always, bring seasickness tablets. I’ve never been seasick before, but on our first whale watching tour in Puerto Vallarta, they told us ahead of time to buy Meclizine (meclizina in Spanish). Most seasickness meds make you super drowsy, but this doesn’t and totally works. We have taken it ever since, anytime we get on a boat.

You can find it at most major pharmacies here, like Guadalajara Farmacia.

This is the thing about seeing whales… the captain cuts the engine when you are near the gentle giants, which means you’re a-bobbing and a-weaving at the mercy of the waves. So, it is better to be prepared than to launch your breakfast over the side.

Other things to pack:

  • A light sweater/sweatshirt. Don’t judge me — it gets cold in the morning shade zipping around on the water.
  • Cash for the dock fee. Only some tours have it, depending on where their boat is docked. It’s only around MXN 40 ($2.32)
  • Cash for tips. Tipping is a thing in Mexico, so don’t be a dick. Tip the marine biologist and captain.
  • Casual and comfy clothes. This isn’t an Instagram photo shoot.

Most tours cost between 1300 and 2000 pesos per person. At today’s exchange rate, that is $75-116.

Where to stay in Puerto Vallarta

2 pools in front of the ocean at the Villa Premiere Hotel in Puerto Vallarta

Ok, so now you know all the ins and outs of Puerto Vallarta whale watching. Better figure out a place to stay. There are tons of options. I mean tons. So, let me help you narrow it down.

Wherever you decide to stay, check to see how close the property is to the Senora de Guadalupe Church. There are times throughout the year when the church bells ring throughout the night, so unless you’d prefer not to sleep on your vacation, stay a little further away.

If you want a small-ish boutique hotel that is lux oceanfront, Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel & Romantic Getaway is for you. It’s right down the street from my apartment and has a gorgeous pool just in front of the ocean. Plus, it’s within walking distance to the Old Town.

Upon arrival, they do it right. They welcome you with a glass of bubbles and a mini-massage! There are two pools, three restaurants, and a spa.

This super cute small hotel is in the heart of Old Town, aka the Romantic Zone, meaning you can walk everywhere within minutes. Loads of restaurants and bars, the beach, two small grocery stores, and a dozen taco stands are all within a 5-minute walk.

Plus, their plant-lined restaurant serves a fab brunch/lunch. Get the eggs benny. You’re welcome.

Sorry, I was distracted by food. Anyway, the hotel has a fitness center and a small pool and the rooms are bright and airy. Casa Nicole is like an oasis in the middle of the busiest area in the city.

This is a super cute, super small, quirky hotel next to the Cuale River. It used to be a mansion and was divided into separate rooms when it was turned into a boutique hotel. Each room is a different color and vibe with unique works of art throughout.

Celebs like Raquel Welch and Perry Ellis have stayed there, and Vogue and Italian Elle have held fashion photoshoots there.

There is a rooftop pool with a bartender and sunset views. It’s about a 15-minute walk to the beach through the Old Town, so the location is fab. Many of our friends have stayed at the Rivera del Rio and loved its eclectic appeal.

Posada de Roger in the Romantic Zone is always full. If there is availability, people come year after year to stay there. Possibly because the rooms start at $64 a night.

If you want to be in the thick of it all, on Basilio Badillo (it’s kind of a little restaurant row), this is the place for you. It’s got a nice-sized courtyard pool that is always bathed in sunlight. The rooms are basic but have AC, and there is a shared kitchen if you want to make a snack or make something for a beach picnic.

If none of those hotels suit your fancy, there are a lot more to choose from. Browse all the hotels in Puerto Vallarta here.

tail from whale watching in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta whale watching is one of the best activities to do in this city. However, it could really suck if you’re on the wrong kind of boat trying to peep a whale, and all you get are views of the guy’s big head in front of you.

Take it from me. Been there. Done that.

After living here for two years, we’ve perfected the art of whale season and only go on the best whale watching tours Puerto Vallarta offers. Every time we spot the first whale on our tour, I can’t help but shed a tear. You think I’d get used to it. But the sheer joy and astonishment at the beauty of these humpback whales gives me all the feels.  And I can’t wait to for the next tour.

Hey Kirsten, we arrived on the first, are about 15 minutes south of town. We’re having cleaning and laundry service issues. Our place doesn’t provide and the outside service they contract with says we’re not on their list. I can manage the cleaning I think, but laundry (as in today) is a must. When they told us the service was coming at 9am today we gathered everything up, stripped the bed, etc. only to be told a little while ago we won’t have the service after all! Yikes! Now I have a bag of damp filthy laundry and no service. Can you recommend someone reliable to pickup and deliver? Like today? Ugh! Help please. Or a suggestion of what to do?

Categories Mexico , North America

Visiting west Mexico this winter? Discover the very best Puerto Vallarta whale watching tours and add this incredible experience to your itinerary. You won’t regret it!

Puerto Vallarta is one of the most famous places in the world to see the majestic humpback whales from up close. The whales migrate from the west coast of Canada and the United States every year to the warm waters of Mexico, where they breed and give birth before making their long journey back north.

During these months, the sightings of the beautiful mammals are practically guaranteed , as they play, feed, and nurse off the coast of Puerto Vallarta.

The humpback whale is the main species to call the region home during the winter, although if you’re lucky you might also get to spot Bryde’s Whales. Blue and Grey whales are also relatively common in other areas of Mexico’s west coast.

When I went whale watching in Puerto Vallarta, it was my first time spotting them so close – it was a truly mesmerizing experience , and one I don’t get tired of recommending!

A small boat of whale watchers in Puerto Vallarta and a whale appearing from the sea.

The only way you can go near the beauties is by joining a whale-watching tour. Even better if it includes a marine biologist on board to provide information about the animals’ behavior and habits, plus fan facts about them.

⚠️ R emember that these whale watching excursions are seasonal . The whale season in Puerto Vallarta goes from December to March.

👉 Going whale watching is among the top Puerto Vallarta tours you can enjoy, and I encourage you to try it. However, it’s vital to respect the animals and their habitat, so make sure to choose a responsible tour operator who will ensure they are not disturbed and will keep an appropriate distance from them.

In this article, you’ll find my recommended Puerto Vallarta whale-watching tours, all of which offer the opportunity to stand in front of the giant, awe-striking whales, which will very likely be the highlight of your trip.

We thoroughly researched the activities to make sure they are sustainable, but we can’t possibly try all the tours ourselves. If you notice any non-sustainable activity during one of these tours, please let us know so we can stop recommending it.

I generally use Viator to book tours around the world. I especially recommend them for their great cancellation policy, which allows you to cancel most activities up to 24 hours in advance and get a full refund.

Morning is the best time of day to go whale watching because the sea tends to be calmer, offering a more relaxing adventure. This is especially important if you’re prone to get seasick! Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta: A Complete Guide

Discover the breathtaking world of whale watching in Puerto Vallarta , where the majestic Humpback Whales steal the spotlight. This seasonal migration is a spectacle you won’t want to miss, and we’ve crafted this guide to ensure you make the most of your experience, including essential tips for selecting the best whale-watching tours.

About the Humpback Whales in Puerto Vallarta

In late fall, Humpback Whales embark on a remarkable migratory journey, covering about 5000 km (3000 mi) from the Arctic to the sheltered coasts of Puerto Vallarta. Recognized as a protected species, these gentle giants arrive to breed and calve in the warm tropical waters. It’s crucial to note that touching or feeding them during a whale-watching tour is strictly prohibited.

Whale Watching Season

Puerto Vallarta whale watching season is from Mid-November to March each year. These gentle giants can be seen breaching out of the water as parents instruct their baby calves in the ways of the watery world. Each year, between 300 and 500 Humpback Whales are registered in the area. In other words, if you go during the right season you are almost guaranteed to see them!

It is very common to see the whales breaching, where they launch themselves out of the water. You will also see the young calves playing around in the deep waters of Banderas Bay while they playfully splash their mothers. Also, if your hotel room has an ocean view you can probably see them out your window in the morning, so make sure to pack some binoculars! It is an unforgettable experience that everyone should see in the winter season in Puerto Vallarta or Nuevo Vallarta.

Best Time of Day to See Whales

Most whale-watching tour companies offer excursions at either 8:30 AM or 1:00 PM during the season. Opting for the morning tour has the advantage of calmer seas, particularly beneficial for those susceptible to seasickness.

Best Puerto Vallarta Whale Watching Tours

The whale-watching tour captains always know where they are and how to find them. They all have walkie-talkies and keep each other in the loop. Many whale-watching tour boats will have a hydrophone so you can hear the whales and dolphins communicate with each other. Also, all vessels are required to have a copy of their tour permit onboard and they need to be flying a special whale-watching flag.

Below are the best whale-watching tours in Puerto Vallarta that we recommend:

Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta: Everything you need to know

Author: Sam Murray

July 9, 2019

Whale watching in Puerto Vallarta should be near the top of every bucket list. Every winter enormous humpback whales arrive in the Bay of Banderas to give birth and mate. During their stay, they love to leap from the waters and flop back to the surface with an almighty crash, sending water in all directions.

Being able to watch this extraordinary spectacle up-close is a humbling, often emotional, experience. But when is the whale watching season in Puerto Vallarta? And where do these leviathans come from? Here’s a guide with everything you need to know about whale watching in Puerto Vallarta.

Whale watching in Puerto Vallarta

When is the whale watching season in puerto vallarta.

Whale watching season in Puerto Vallarta runs from mid-December to March. However, you may be lucky enough to see breaching whales a few weeks before and after. The exact dates will change from year to year (it ran from December 8 to March 23 in 2018).

When is the whale watching season in Puerto Vallarta in 2019?

This year, the whale watching season runs from December 15, 2019 to March 15, 2020.

What kind of whales are in Puerto Vallarta?

The majority of the whales you will see in Puerto Vallarta’s Bay of Banderas are humpback whales. However, Bryde’s Whales have also been seen in the waters, albeit rarely. Puerto Vallarta’s seas are also home to plenty of other large marine animals but more on that later…

How close can you get?

How close you can get to the whales depends on the type of boat you are traveling in. Smaller vessels (those under 10 meters long) have to be at least 60m from the nearest whale. Boats larger than 10m must be at least 80m away.

Additionally, the law states that a maximum of four boats are allowed around a whale at any one time. If another captain would like their passengers to see the same whale, they must wait a minimum of 240m away until one of the original boats leaves.

Whales, however, are unaware of the rules laid down by the Mexican government and may approach boats of their own accord (they can get a little curious!). In that case, captains must have their engines in neutral and cannot move the boats until the whale moves away.

Where do the whales come from?

The humpbacks in Puerto Vallarta are not permanent residents but a migratory species that visit once a year. The whales that arrive in the Bay of Banderas come from the west coast of Canada and the United States, travelling past Baja California until they reach Puerto Vallarta’s shores. The voyage is a relatively short one (it can take just 40 days for some of the animals).

After their stay in Vallarta, the whales will return once more to the waters off Canada and the US to feed and build up their strength for their next Mexican vacation.

Read more: How to Optimize Your Whale Watching Experience

Why do they go to Puerto Vallarta?

Around 700 humpback whales arrive in Puerto Vallarta to give birth and mate. The natural shape of the bay provides protection for the mothers and their calves, which allows the youngsters to get through the tricky start to life in relative safety.

The majority of births take place from the end of December until the end of January. After that period, you are more likely to spot mothers and calves together when you go whale watching.

Interestingly, the whales will not feed at all during their time in Puerto Vallarta. Instead, they consume their food during the summer months in the US and Canada, building up their strength for the long, winter months.

Can I get in the water with them?

No, absolutely not. The whales in Mexico are protected by law. This stops any activity which might interrupt their day including diving, swimming, water skiing, parachuting, or fishing near to them.

The same rules also mean you can’t feed the whales, throw trash in the water, or disrupt the animals in another way.

JM TIP: If you would like to swim with a giant, you can snorkel with whale sharks in Los Cabos and off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Read more here .

What other animals are there in Banderas Bay?

The Bay of Banderas is home to plenty of other animal life. At varying times throughout the year, the waters are home to bottlenose dolphins, spotted dolphins, rough toothed dolphins, and spinner dolphins.

You may also see orca (killer whales) and false killer whales, although you would need to be very lucky to spot them. Manta rays and sea turtles can also be seen swimming off the shores of Vallarta.

Are there sharks in Puerto Vallarta?

There have been no reported sightings of sharks within the Bay of Banderas. Manta rays are part of the shark family but only eat tiny prey such as plankton and small crustaceans.

Can you see the whales from the shore?

Yes! It is possible to see leaping humpback whales from the shores of Puerto Vallarta, even without binoculars. As the whales tend to stay away from the immediate shore, you may need to scan the distance for signs of activity.

Spotting a humpback whale from the shore is partly based on luck, but you can increase your chances by looking for these tell-tale signs:

  • A cluster of boats: If you see a number of vessels gathered in one area you can be fairly certain that a whale is nearby.
  • A plume of water: Whales breathe through blowholes, firing out air as they come up for more oxygen. This releases a plume of water that can glitter in the sun. If you see one of those, it’s likely that it comes from a whale.
  • A large tail: If you spot a tail above the surface then it’s almost definitely a humpback whale. Humpbacks dive below the surface and stay under for up to 15 minutes on average (although they can stay under for up to 45 minutes).

JM TIP: If cooling off in an infinity pool while watching humpbacks leap from the water sounds like your perfect holiday, read our blog post , which features three villas from which you can do just that.

How can I arrange a whale watching tour?

If you’d like to see the leaping humpback whales of Puerto Vallarta, then book your vacation with Journey Mexico. Our Travel Planners have unrivaled connections and knowledge of the area, which means your whale watching tour will be conducted by the very best operators around.

We’re also dedicated to working with eco-friendly tour guides who, not only have inside knowledge on all the whale hotspots, but aim to care for the animals and the environment in which they live.

U.S. News Insider Tip : Book a tour for one of the first days of your trip. Whale watching tours in PV frequently get canceled due to choppy seas or lack of local whales. Booking early in your vacation gives you a chance to try another day if your first tour doesn't pan out.– Holly D. Johnson

Spotting a humpback whale as it crests the surface of the ocean is an awe-inspiring sight, and Puerto Vallarta is one of the best places to do just that. Whale watching season runs from early December through March, when humpback whales congregate in the sheltered, warm waters of Puerto Vallarta's Banderas Bay to have their babies. The peak of whale watching season is between January and February. And although you can bring your binoculars and look for whales from the shore – try the Malecón – your best chance for seeing them up close is aboard a tour operator's boat.

Wildlife Connection is a traveler-recommended operator that offers half-day whale and dolphin watching tours, starting at $72 for adults and $48 for kids (if booked online). Along with a bilingual guide, Wildlife Connection also serves their guests bottled water and lunch. Vallarta Natours is another highly-rated tour company that offers whale watching tours in Puerto Vallarta. Ticket prices start at $104 for adults and $83 for children. Tour times and prices vary by company. During the offseason, you may be able to book dolphin encounters with these companies.

Recent travelers describe the tours as the “experience of a lifetime.” Others appreciated the presence of an onboard naturalist guide and all of the information provided about the animals. You can find out more in our list of the best Puerto Vallarta tours .

#1 El Malecón

U.S. News Insider Tip : If you're hoping to book accommodations within walking distance of El Malecón, be selective when choosing a hotel or all-inclusive resort. Many properties are situated along the main pedestrian stretch, whereas some resorts require at least a 20-minute cab ride to get back and forth. – Holly D. Johnson

Stretching approximately 12 city blocks along Bahía de Banderas (Banderas Bay), El Malecón is a great place to stroll any time of day, but especially in the evenings. Along the way, visitors will see everything from sand sculptures and bronze sculptures to the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe . El Malecón is also home to the open-air Los Arcos Amphitheater, another iconic symbol of Puerto Vallarta that plays hosts to free performances, featuring live musicians and traditional Mexican dance troupes, just about every night.

What is boat fever?

whale tour puerto vallarta

Yes, of course it is. But the way you are asking, I have the feeling that you aren’t going to appreciate it. There are few experiences in life comparable to the extraordinary feeling of seeing whales as they approach from every angle. We take many tours, and this one is my favorite. It’s fascinating..

“looking for whale the entire time” their is marine biologists in every tour, and they know where to find the whales. We have done the tour a few days before the whale season starts or ends , and always saw many.

Yes, what is boat fever?

By the way you phrase your question, it doesn't sound like the activity for you!

I can't comment personally because I have never done it (get seasick very easily so not for me).

Boat fever is when you are happy when you buy a boat and after the newness wears off so does your elation. I think the comparison here is excitement to go on a whale watch and disappointment when none appear.

' class=

I also thought that “Whale Watching “ would be an extended ride looking for whales, but never seeing any. But in reality we had a very entertaining time with a lot of viewing of those great animals. I think that they have very good record for finding them.

Overview of the Two Areas: Cancun and Puerto Vallarta

Cancun is a large city in the Riviera Maya on the Caribbean Sea. It has one of the country’s biggest international airports.

Best-All-Inclusive-Cancun-Resorts-for-Families-Featured-Image-728x546.jpeg

Cancun beaches are some of the best beaches in the country, but it’s so much more than that. Cancun is surrounded by a lush jungle with ancient Mayan ruins scattered around.

So, it’s an excellent destination for learning about the cultural history of the region while relaxing on the beach between activities.

Cancun’s hotel zone is also a very convenient place to stay. It’s right on the beach, with great Caribbean views, and easy to get around. It’s a very convenient city, with so much to offer.

Puerto Vallarta is a beach town on the Pacific Coast in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. It’s a small city, but with all the popular amenities and conveniences you want.

Scenic Mazatlan sea promenade (El Malecon) with ocean lookouts and scenic landscapes

The city itself is beautiful, with a long boardwalk called the Malecon. There’s a lot to do in and around the city.

However, there is less cultural Mayan influence in this region, so it’s not the place to go for ancient ruins and archeological sites.

Nonetheless, many beautiful nearby towns, the Sierra Madre Mountains, and fun ocean sports are available.

Puerto Vallarta is 1,532 miles (2,466 km) from Cancun. So they aren’t exactly close to one another. But they both have incredible white sand beaches and plenty of activities for the whole family.

When to Visit Puerto Vallarta vs Cancun

The weather is similar between Puerto Vallarta and Cancun, with the same rainy season. The rainy season is from June through November in both places.

In Puerto Vallarta, it rarely ever rains outside of the rainy season. And in Cancun, there are only a few scattered showers here and there outside of the rainy season.

Image of Cancun Caribbean sea view from up wave with turquoise water

I’d recommend avoiding the rainy season if it’s possible. It usually doesn’t rain all day during these months, however. So, it’s possible to enjoy your stay even during the rainy season.

In my opinion, November is the best time to visit both Puerto Vallarta and Cancun. It’s the end of the rainy season, and the weather is cool and refreshing.

The downtown area is usually a little more crowded and more expensive around the holidays in the winter and in the middle of the summer.

Getting to Cancun vs Puerto Vallarta

Both Cancun and Puerto Vallarta have direct access to an international airport, so it’s also straightforward to get here and get around the city.

For Cancun, you’ll fly into Cancun International Airport. The airport is only about 20 minutes from the hotel zone and downtown Cancun. According to World Data, Cancun Airport is one of the largest airports in Mexico, alongside Mexico City.

Runway in Cancun Airport, Mexico

From Cancun Airport, there are several buses and shared vans that go into the city center or the hotel zone. Private drivers, transfer companies, and taxis are usually affordable for this trip.

Uber technically operates in Cancun, but it’s not the most reliable or trustworthy method of transportation. Most people take taxis or walk around the city itself.

For Puerto Vallarta, you’ll fly into Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (Puerto Vallarta Airport). The airport is three miles south of downtown Puerto Vallarta, and the ride only takes about 10 minutes.

You can also explore Puerto Vallarta on a cruise. There’s a large cruise ship terminal just outside of the town center. The terminal is about 3 miles north of downtown Puerto Vallarta.

There are city buses that leave from the airport directly to downtown, but you can also take a private van, taxi, or driver.

Once in Puerto Vallarta, many main attractions are within walking distance. There are taxis on every corner, but Uber does work in Puerto Vallarta. Uber is usually the easiest way to get around.

Best Things to Do in Cancun and Puerto Vallarta

If you’re still torn between Puerta Vallarta or Cancun, you might want to look at the best things to do in each town to get a better idea.

Long story short, you really can’t go wrong with either. Let’s discuss the best things to do in each destination.

Things to do in Cancun with Kids

Visit chichen itza, cenotes, and other mayan ruins.

Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Valladolid are all great starting points to visit the incredible Chichen Itza.

Chichen Itza is one of the “ New Seven Wonders of the World ” and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a great place to learn about ancient Mayan ruins and civilization and a must-do when you visit Cancun.

Kukulkan pyramid in Chichen Itza on the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

Chichen Itza is only about 125 miles (200 km) from Cancun, and the drive takes about 2 hours.

On your way to the ancient ruins, stop at one or two cenotes. The cenotes are freshwater swimming holes fed by a network of underwater rivers in the Riviera Maya.

There are several different types of cenotes. For example, some have “closed entrances” which feel more like a cave. Others have “open entrances” that feel like a refreshing lake in the jungle.

The ancient ruins and cenotes are an essential piece of Mexican culture, so it’s a must-do while on the East Coast of Mexico.

Chichen Itza, Cenote, and Valladolid All-Inclusive Tour is the best way to visit the ruins, one of the nearby cenotes, and the town of Valladolid. Check rates here .

The all-inclusive tour includes transportation, meals, and a bilingual guide who walks you through the history and significance of each place you visit.

Take a Boat Trip to Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is a tiny island off the coast of Cancun. It’s only about a 30-minute ferry ride, so you can easily get there from anywhere in Cancun.

Isla Mujeres is known for its beautiful beaches, with Playa Norte being one of the best beaches in all of Mexico. The shore has crystal clear waters, long white sand beaches, and calm waters. It’s the perfect place to spend a day relaxing.

perfect tropical sea landscape. island Isla Mujeres (Women Island). Mexico, Yucatan

You can take a ferry to Isla Mujeres from Gran Puerto Terminal or take a full-day tour to Isla Mujeres in an action-packed catamaran.

Cancun: Isla Mujeres Full Day Dancer Cruise is hands-down the best tour to Isla Mujeres for families.

The three-story catamaran makes two stops, one on a beautiful reef, where you can swim with sea turtles, snorkel, and admire the lively marine life. The second stop is to Isla Mujeres itself. Check rates here .

The boat has a waterslide, diving board, a DJ, and includes food and drinks.

Snorkel or Scuba Dive

If you don’t join a snorkel cruise to Isla, you should still make time for some snorkeling. The Quintana Roo is world-renowned for its turquoise waters and location near the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest reef in the world.

You’ll find turtles, tropical fish, and some other animals.

Underwater portrait of father and son snorkeling together

Cancun’s beaches aren’t the best for snorkeling, so if you want to experience the best of the best, I highly recommend a snorkel boat tour that takes you just off the coast. Alternatively, take a short bus or taxi ride to Akumal and swim with sea turtles there.

If you’re certified, scuba diving is another fun and adventurous activity. Many people visit Cozumel, just off the coast of Playa del Carmen, for exciting scuba diving. However, the underwater museum near Cancun is another popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Cancun: Snorkeling Boat Trip is the best family-friendly tour that takes you to the most famous beach destinations for snorkeling.

The tour stops at four snorkel sites, including the underwater museum, a shipwreck, and reefs. Check rates here .

The tour includes all equipment, snorkel lessons, roundtrip transportation, a qualified snorkel guide, and bottled water.

Take One or Two Day Trips

Cancun is the heart of Quintana Roo, and while most people visit the incredible Cancun beaches, there’s so much to see and do just a short hop, skip, and jump away from the big city.

Some popular day trips from Cancun include Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Valladolid, Bacalar, and Puerto Morelos.

Ruins of the Mayan fortress and temple near Tulum, Mexico

Tulum and Valladolid are best for a cultural experience, as Mayan archeological sites and many different cenotes surround them.

Playa is a popular shopping destination, with a large beach right in the downtown area. Bacalar is a bit further away, but it’s one of the most beautiful and magical lagoons in Latin America.

Things to do in Puerto Vallarta with Kids

Try a canopy zipline tour.

If you’re visiting the West Coast of Mexico, you’ll spend plenty of time at the incredible Puerto Vallarta beaches. However, if you want a break from the beach to explore the mountainside, you have plenty of options.

whale tour puerto vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is right on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, but the Sierra Madre Mountains surround it. The mountain range is the perfect place for a zipline tour, which is also really fun for kids who like adventure.

Puerto Vallarta: Canopy Tour with Zipline and Speedboat Ride is one of the most exciting zipline tours through the jungle.

The adventure park has 19 different zipline routes, an exotic animal sanctuary, water slides, kayaks, and river fun if the weather is good. Check rates here .

The tour includes roundtrip transportation, lockers, a bilingual guide, and a tequila tasting. This activity is not recommended for children under five years old.

Join the Humpback Whale Research Project

While Cancun is a popular destination for whale shark tours in the summer months, Puerto Vallarta is known as an excellent place for humpback whale-watching tours.

Image of Whale watching in the Banderas Bay near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Humpback whales swim through the Pacific Ocean near Puerto Vallarta between December through March, but the best times to spot them are in January and February.

There are several boat tours and whale-watching tours that leave from Puerto Vallarta’s central piers. However, I’d recommend an informational tour with a biologist, as it’s a great learning experience for the kids.

Puerto Vallarta: Humpback Whale Research Adventure Tour is one of the best whale tours around Banderas Bay, where Puerto Vallarta is located.

The tour includes a brief lesson on the humpback whales, their behavior, and life in Banderas Bay, as well as a boat ride to observe the whales and even listen to their sounds through a hydrophone. Check rates here .

The tour cost includes a donation to the humpback whale research project, three hours on a small boat, water, coffee, tea, expedition insurance, and a live guide.

Snorkel and Explore the Area on a Boat Tour

When it comes to Puerto Vallarta vs Cancun, Cancun and the Riviera Maya have slightly better snorkeling. However, Puerto Vallarta has a few good hidden gems, as well.

Los Arcos is a well-known natural formation right off the coast of Puerto Vallarta and has some exciting marine life when the weather is good. There are also some secret beaches that rival all of Puerto Vallarta’s beaches on the coast.

Los Arcos National Marine Park in Mexico near Puerto Vallarta

If you want to make the most of your Mexican vacation, I recommend joining a snorkel tour to see all of Puerto Vallarta’s highlights.

Puerto Vallarta: Los Arcos Snorkel & Beach Private Boat Tour is an excellent tour from Los Muertos Pier near Zona Romantica in Puerto Vallarta.

It stops at Los Arcos for a quick snorkel, then cruises to Las Animas Beach for lunch and more beach time. Check rates here .

Go on a Taco Tour

Puerto Vallarta has it all: lively nightlife, luxurious hotels, beautiful art galleries, international food, and, of course, incredible street food. And one of the best things about Mexico is the local street food, like tacos, tamales, and tortas.

Image of a basket with a fish taco in front of a beach in Puerto Vallarta Mexico

Many luxury hotels, boutique hotels, and other accommodations are in Puerto Vallarta’s Zona Romantica (the Romantic Zone). Still, there are so many different restaurants it can be hard to find the best spots to dine.

If you’d like a little more guidance and even explanations behind some of the most popular foods in Mexico, consider joining a taco tour.

Puerto Vallarta: Evening Taco Adventure Tour takes you and your group to seven different restaurants, where you can sample some of the most popular dishes. Check rates here .

The tour is also a little city tour, as your guide will point out all the landmarks you pass by throughout the trip. It’s a fun way to start a lively holiday in Puerto Vallarta.

Beaches in Cancun vs Puerto Vallarta

If you’re deciding between Puerta Vallarta or Cancun, you might want to consider the beaches to help decide which is the better fit for the family.

Both Puerto Vallarta and Cancun are popular beach destinations, and both have incredible beaches. But they are slightly different.

Image of Banderas Bay Pacific Ocean coast. South of Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is Banderas Bay, which keeps the Pacific Ocean calm and tranquil. The waters are a little darker and sometimes a little cooler than in Cancun.

Cancun is in the Caribbean Ocean, with crystal-clear waters and miles of sand and sun in every direction. However, Cancun has on-and-off battles with sargasso (or seaweed), especially during hot summer.

Sometimes, the seaweed piles up on shore and even taints the waters around the beach. It usually isn’t too bad, and the hotels do everything they can to clean it up as much as possible, but it’s something to keep in mind.

Los Muertos Beach is the most popular in Puerto Vallarta, but there are many others. The most popular beaches in Puerto Vallarta are:

  • Los Muertos Beach in Zona Romantica
  • Las Glorias Beach
  • Tranquila Beach

Cancun beaches are also something to write home about, as you really can’t beat the incredible Caribbean. When the weather is good and the seaweed is minimal, I’d choose Cancun beaches in the Puerto Vallarta vs Cancun debate.

These are the top beaches in Cancun:

  • Dolphins Beach (Playa Delfines)
  • Tortugas Beach
  • Langosta Beach

However, regarding Puerto Vallarta vs Cancun and their respective beaches, it might come down to personal preference because both are remarkable.

Deep Sea Fishing in Puerto Vallarta vs Cancun

Puerto Vallarta and Cancun are both great spots for deep sea fishing, although it’s slightly more prevalent in Cancun.

The most popular time for deep sea fishing in Puerto Vallarta is in the summer months when you can catch cow tuna and giant yellowfin tuna just off the coast of Mexico. However, autumn, winter, and spring have their charm, as well.

4 Hrs Private Boat Fishing is a fun activity for the family, and you can go deep sea fishing on a private boat, all to yourselves.

The tour includes all necessary fishing equipment, snorkeling equipment, safety equipment, and a bilingual guide. Check rates here .

Summer months are also the most popular time for deep sea fishing in Cancun, although you can find a good catch any time of the year. Some popular fish are mahi-mahi, sailfish, snapper, white marlin, blue marlin, and much more.

Most fishing charters go out near Isla Conty, a small uninhabited island. So, it’s also a great way to explore the surrounding waters.

6-Hour Shared Fishing Tour is a highly-rated tour right from downtown Cancun. The tour includes all necessary equipment, beverages, a bilingual guide, and a captain. It also guarantees a small group size, with a maximum of six people. Check rates here .

You could also visit a nearby fishing village if you aren’t as interested in deep-sea fishing. Puerto Morelos is the most popular fishing spot near Cancun, and Yelapa is a popular spot for fishing near Puerto Vallarta.

Day Trips from Cancun and Puerto Vallarta

Both Puerto Vallarta vs Cancun have excellent day trip options. Depending on the length of your trip, you might want to escape the city for one or two days, and you have plenty to choose from.

Let’s review the most popular trips from Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.

Popular Cancun Day Trips

Tulum is only 80 miles (130 km) from Cancun and one of the best day trips. The small town has recently gained popularity for its authentic vibes, beautiful beaches, laid-back atmosphere, and proximity to significant ruins and cenotes.

Ancient mayan ruins at the Tulum archaeological site, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

ADO buses leave from downtown Cancun and Cancun Airport frequently, bringing you to the Tulum Archeological Ruins or downtown Tulum.

Tulum is also near Coba, a lesser-known but impressive archeological site in the jungle. But if you’re more interested in natural watering holes and cenotes, several options exist.

Cenote Eden is a cenote just outside Tulum, popular for families. Grand Cenote is another large cenote just past Tulum town.

Cancun/Riviera Maya: Tulum Ruins, Sea Turtle Swim & Cenotes is the perfect tour for families that want transportation, and all planning is taken care of.

It’s a full-day tour that covers all the main highlights in Tulum and the surrounding region. You’ll also be accompanied by a guide who can explain historical context and more. Check rates here .

Valladolid is 96 miles (156 km) from Cancun. It’s also the closest town to Chichen Itza, a great starting point to discover the most well-known Mayan sites in the world. And there are plenty of things to do in Valladolid for all types of travelers.

Cancun, Mexico. May 30, 2021. Footpath amidst garden and fountain with San Servacio church in Valladolild

If you’re going to the ruins without a tour guide, I recommend heading to Valladolid the day before and spending the night in the small town, as it’s only about 30 minutes from the ruin’s entrance.

You can also visit Valladolid on a quick day trip, as well. ADO bus leaves from downtown Cancun to Valladolid regularly. Once in Valladolid, you can explore the old cobblestone streets, admire the Spanish-inspired architecture, and jump in the cenote right in the center of town.

Cancun: Chichen Itza, Cenote, Valladolid, Lunch, and Tequila is the most popular tour of Valladolid and the nearby ruins.

The tour includes roundtrip transportation, buffet lunch, entrance to the cenote, and a knowledgeable guide. Check rates here .

Isla Holbox

Isla Holbox is not the most popular day trip from Cancun because it’s set further back, but it’s worth the trouble. To get to Holbox, you’ll have to first get to Chiquila, a small port town. Chiquila is 87 miles (140 km) from Cancun.

whale tour puerto vallarta

From Chiquila, you can take a 20-minute ferry ride to the small island of Holbox.

Holbox is “off the beaten path” compared to other popular tourist destinations around the Yucatan Peninsula. There are only dirt roads, simple infrastructure, and incredible nature.

From Cancun or Puerto Morelos: Holbox Boat Tour with Lunch is the easiest way to get to Holbox. You’ll arrive by boat, which saves a lot of time.

And the tour makes sure you catch all the most important spots along the way. You’ll also get some free time to explore the island alone or with your guide. Check rates here .

Popular Puerto Vallarta Day Trips

Nuevo vallarta.

Nuevo Vallarta, which translates to “New Vallarta” in English, is only 9 miles (14 km) north of Puerto Vallarta. It’s a resort destination known for its golf courses, marina, and a long, sandy central beach.

You can easily take a local bus, taxi, or Uber to Nuevo Vallarta as it’s so close to the downtown region.

However, many snorkel tours include stops in the waters at both Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta.

Half Day Snorkeling Tour in Puerto Vallarta & Nuevo Vallarta is a popular snorkel cruise around the waters of Banderas Bay.

The tour includes all snorkel equipment, buffet lunch, entrance to a beach club, alcoholic beverages, a live commentator on board, and a professional guide. Check rates here .

San Pancho and Sayulita

San Pancho and Sayulita are two small towns right next to one another. San Pancho is a small fishing village 26 miles (43 km) from Puerto Vallarta. Sayulita is a world-class surf destination 24 miles (40 km) from Puerto Vallarta.

The surfing village of Sayulita, Nayarit, Mexico

Because of their proximity, I recommend visiting both in one day. You can explore the small-town streets, shop for local souvenirs and handicrafts, and dine on traditional Mexican cuisine.

From Puerto Vallarta: San Pancho and Sayulita is one of the best full-day tours that includes transportation, time in each town, and a live tour guide who can teach you all about the two small towns.

You’ll also enjoy air-conditioned transportation for the entire there-and-back trip. Check rates here .

San Sebastian

San Sebastian del Oeste is a small mountain town in the Sierra Madre Mountains, making it the perfect escape from the sea and salt. The town is 42 miles (68 km) from Puerto Vallarta.

Even though it’s not too far from the central city, San Sebastian feels like a little oasis with cooler temperatures, incredible mountain views, forests surrounded by rolling fog in the mornings, and quintessential small-town cobblestone streets.

Puerto Vallarta: Guided San Sebastian Tour is the easiest way to visit this little mountain town.

You’ll have transportation all taken care of, and you’ll be with a tour guide who can teach you and the family about the history of this intriguing town. Check rates here .

You’ll have lunch in downtown San Sebastian and get leisure time to do as you’d like between planned activities.

Best Things to Do Off the Resort in Puerto Vallarta

P uerto Vallarta is one of Mexico’s greatest beach destinations. Except these days, it is so much more than just a great beach town.

What was once a sleepy fishing village has transformed into a world-class city by the sea. One of the rare combinations of coastal getaway and amenity-packed city, the energy in Puerto Vallarta is unlike anywhere else in Mexico.

Packed with restaurants, bars, beach clubs, and activities, there is never a shortage of activity in this Pacific Coast jewel. It also happens to have some of the best resorts in Mexico. But if travelers come to Puerto Vallarta and opt to never leave their hotel, they may be missing out on what makes Puerto Vallarta so special.

One of the safest cities in Mexico, the allure of Puerto Vallarta is what waits to be discovered along its cobblestone streets, up its mountain roadways, or down along the coastline. Get ready to discover the best of Puerto Vallarta with this roundup of the best things to do off the resort.

Puerto Vallarta’s Best Neighborhoods

Puerto Vallarta is a fairly large place these days, especially when you remember that it started as a small fishing village and beach town. If you’re venturing off of the resort, these are the neighborhoods that you may want to know.

The Marina: Home to several hotels and resorts, and the place where all the cruise ships come in, Puerto Vallarta’s Marina is well-stocked with restaurants, shops, and tour operators. It’s a very safe and walkable area, but because its primary focus is tourism you may be paying a lot more for food and activities in the marina.

Las Glorias and Versalles: These two neighborhoods are just a few minutes away from the Marina, but have a much more local vibe. Separated by the main road, Las Glorias is the neighborhood directly on the beach, while Versalles is a bit more residential. Las Glorias is essentially Puerto Vallarta’s Hotel Zone. Both, however, have been expanding their offerings at a rapid rate to include some of the best restaurants and bars in Puerto Vallarta that are outside the resort walls.

Cinco de Diciembre: This beachfront neighborhood is known for its cobblestone streets, toes-in-the-sand restaurants, and a mix of local and expat residents. “Cinco,” as it's known, is the beginning of the original Puerto Vallarta. It’s here you’ll find the start of the historic homes that climb up the mountainsides, funky restaurants, and lots of shopping.

Centro: Centro is where the world-famous Malecon begins. It’s also where you will find Puerto Vallarta’s main square and its most famous church, Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. The Malecon is lined with art sculptures and has some of the city’s most iconic views.

Zona Romantica: Finally, at the end of the malecon you will arrive at Zona Romantica, or the historic downtown of Puerto Vallarta. The oldest part of the city, and certainly its most beautiful, Zona Romantica has the iconic cobblestone streets, the iconic Los Muertos Pier, and the most famous beaches in Puerto Vallarta. It’s also the most popular neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta for dining and nightlife.

Best Activities in Puerto Vallarta

Being a full-fledged city on the sea means Puerto Vallarta has so many fantastic things to do. Of course, you’ll find lovely beaches but chances are your resort has one of those. If you want to venture off of the resort, these are the best activities in Puerto Vallarta.

The Malecon

One of Puerto Vallarta's most important attractions is the Malecon. The pedestrian-only walkway hugs the coastline from Centro all the way down to the Zona Romantica. Along the way, you'll have the best views of the Bay of Banderas, as well as the jungle-covered mountains, historic homes, and colorful street art. The Malecon is the buzzy heart of Puerto Vallarta and has something happening at all hours of the day (and night).

Bay of Banderas

Central to the identity of Puerto Vallarta is the massive Bay of Banderas. The entire essence of the city thrives on this gorgeous body of water. One of the best things to do off of the resort in Puerto Vallarta is to get out on the water, whether it's a water taxi from Los Muertos Pier down to the more isolated beaches, a sunset cruise, or an adventure visit to Islas Marietas, a group of protected islands.

If you're visiting between December and March, keep your eyes peeled for whale sightings.

Mirador Cerro de La Cruz

If you want a little bit of exercise that pays out in spectacular views, consider a hike to the Mirador Cerro de La Cruz. High above Centro, this bird's-eye perch has sweeping views of the city, bay, and across the bay to Punta Mita.

Magical Towns

Puerto Vallarta has several Magical Towns that are within an easy driving distance for a day trip. If you don't want to drive yourself, plenty of local tour operators offer day trips. The most popular is San Sebastian del Oeste, an old mining town up in the mountains.

The temperature here is much cooler, the tops of the trees blanketed in fog, and a landscape of beautiful churches, ranches, and abandoned mines. Travelers can also explore Talpa de Allende, known for its famous church, and Mascota, a Sierra Madre village shrouded in pine and oak trees.

Another option is to head north to the neighboring state of Nayarit to visit the now world-famous Sayulita. This Magical Town has long been a favorite among surfers and backpackers, but in the past few years has exploded to have art galleries, restaurants, and bars. It can get crowded, especially on weekends, but it is one of the top attractions near Puerto Vallarta.

One of Puerto Vallarta's best beaches is one that can't be seen from town. You'll have to hop a water taxi and take a 45-minute boat trip south to the tiny village of Yelapa. This beachfront town is only accessible by boat and is home to rustic restaurants, guesthouses, and a crescent-shaped beach with gentle, blue-green water.

Zona Romantica

A trip down to the Zona Romantica is a must for any visit to Puerto Vallarta. The most beautiful neighborhood in the city, this is the spot to visit for the best Instagrammable photos of cobblestone streets, white historic buildings and red terracotta roofs.

Many of the city’s top restaurants and bars are here, and it has some of Puerto Vallarta’s most popular beaches.

One of the top reasons to come to Puerto Vallarta is to try the food. Local specialties include seafood, birria, ceviche, and much more. Several tour companies offer local food tours to many different restaurants and street carts. One of the best foodie experiences is Vallarta Food Tours’ Versalles Tour.

This experience takes you out of the main tourist areas and into the local neighborhoods to try some of the restaurants and local eateries that are shaking up the foodie scene in Puerto Vallarta.

Islas Marietas

The government-protected Islas Marietas is a group of uninhabited islands known for its rare wildlife. Local tour operators, like Boca Chicca or Vallarta Adventures, can arrange snorkel trips, paddle boarding, or even a visit to the hidden beach located inside one of the islands.

Getting Around Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a very easy city to get around, and one of the safest in Mexico. Taxis are abundant and offer rates that are calculated by neighborhood zones. Uber is also available in Puerto Vallarta, and usually for a much lower rate than local taxis.

Once you’re in any neighborhood, it’s very easy to walk around. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can even walk from neighborhood to neighborhood and get a feel for them all.
