FAQ About Travel Insurance to Hong Kong

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Hong Kong. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Hong Kong can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

However, any existing or known event/conditions before your successful application will not be covered in respect of the Cancellation of Trip or Travel Delay benefits. Personal Accident cover starts 3 hours before scheduled departure time. All other benefits will commence when you depart from the Hong Kong immigration office/counter.

This depends on whether you have purchased a single travel or annual travel plan. FlyAway single trip travel plan insures you for up to 180 days, whereas an annual plan has no limits on the number of trips taken within the insured period and insures you for a maximum of 90 days on each trip. You may choose either single travel or annual travel plan depending on your travel needs.

FlyAway will cover you for any paid and non-recoverable expenses, including air ticket and accommodation fees, if you have to cancel your trip due to an unforeseeable riot break out at your trip destination within one week before the planned departure date.

FlyAway covers all amateur sports activities and even some high risk amateur sports on your trip, including winter sports, hot air balloon, scuba diving, water-skiing, rafting, sailing, parachuting accompanied by professionals, rock climbing, bungee-jumping, and horse riding. You might also purchase our 'Sports Activities Rider' to enjoy a higher limit of protection on personal accident cover.

However, motor racing, self-navigated aerial activities, professional sports, sports engagements which may result in an earned income or remuneration, and any trekking at an altitude greater than 5,000 meters above sea level or diving to a depth greater than 40 meters below sea level are not covered.

Digital gadgets such as your personal laptop computer, tablet, digital camera, digital camcorder and related accessories or equipment are covered under Personal Baggage Cover within sub-limits, but excluding mobile phone.

However, you might wish to purchase the optional benefit of 'Damage of Mobile Phone' in order to get your mobile phone covered for accidental damage to your mobile phone.

Once you purchased FlyAway, you are covered for the trip cancellation benefits if you suffer from a sudden serious illness or injury requiring hospitalization excluding ‘pre-existing condition'. Your doctor must certify that you are no longer fit to travel, within 90 days before the start date of your trip.

You should call Zurich 24-hour Emergency Assistance at +852-2886 3977 immediately. Experienced assistance coordinators will be able to offer you immediate assistance. Do remember to obtain all the relevant documents such as medical certificate and receipt in case of medical claim.

Sure. Just give Zurich a call at +852 2903 9400 before the policy expires. They will help you extend the insurance period of your FlyAway single trip travel plan up to a maximum of 180 days.

If you are stuck at an airport due to bad weather or otherwise detained at your destination due to circumstances beyond your control, Zurich may even automatically add a maximum up to ten days to your single travel coverage free of charge.

If you or your travel companion have contracted COVID-19 within 7 days before the departure date, we will cover your loss of unused travel fare and/or accommodation expenses in case of trip cancellation.

If you contracted COVID-19 during the insured journey, we cover:

  • the actual medically necessary expenses incurred overseas;
  • a daily cash allowance if you are required to undergo unexpected compulsory quarantine;
  • Zurich Emergency Assistance benefits which cover COVID-19 during the entire insured journey;
  • your loss of unused travel fare and/or accommodation expenses if you have to abandon the insured journey and return to Hong Kong.

We also cover after you returned to Hong Kong for:

  • follow-up medical expenses for illness (including COVID-19) incurred within 3 months upon return to Hong Kong;
  • compulsory quarantine cash allowance due to unexpected compulsory quarantine by the Hong Kong Government within 3 days upon completion of the insured journey and returning to Hong Kong.

In addition,

  • if you need to stay overseas longer than planned due to any circumstances which are beyond your control and arise after the insured journey has begun (e.g. contracted COVID-19), we will automatically extend your period of insurance up to 10 days free of charge for such a period as is reasonably necessary for the completion of the insured journey.

We do not cover any loss resulting directly or indirectly from COVID-19 which is diagnosed within 7 days after the enrollment date of the policy (for single trip) / enrollment date of the policy or the date of receipt issued by the travel agent or public common carrier for the payment confirmation of travel ticket or tour, whichever is later (for annual travel).

You must fulfil the entry rules and conditions including vaccination requirement both in Hong Kong and your planned travel destination(s), otherwise, no coverage of the policy shall be provided, and no benefits shall be paid under this policy.

Jason was on Bali Island for a diving trip when after a session, he started experiencing dizziness, pain and numbness in his arms, legs and back. He sought treatment at the local hospital and the treating doctor confirmed that Jason had decompression sickness.

AIG Travel learned that Jason needed several rounds of therapy. We approved cover after reviewing his medical report. When the hospital declined a guarantee of payment directly from us, we activated a local provider to do so. Jason stayed in hospital for a week and continued his recovery in his hotel for another three days. We arranged for his return journey on business class accompanied by a medical escort. Wheelchair service at the airports and ground ambulance transfers at both ends were arranged also. Jason safely arrived home and was to have a follow up check at a local hospital.

Lung infection in Thailand

A five-year-old girl, Daisy, developed a cough and high fever while on holiday with her mother, Alicia, in Trang, Thailand. Alicia called the ATAP global service centre for help and we quickly referred them to the Wattanapat Hospital located nearest to where they were staying. After Daisy had been seen by the treating doctor, we followed up and learned that chest x-ray showed that Daisy had lung infection. She was admitted for conservative treatment and we approved cover for her medical expenses.

When we checked in on her condition the next day, we found out that she had responded well to treatment and was fast recovering. Later on the same day, Daisy was discharged. Both mother and daughter continued their stay in Thailand and returned to home as planned.

Lower back compression after a fall…

A couple from Hong Kong was on a tour in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam when the 63-year-old wife, Sally, slipped and fell while trying to get off the tour bus. A travel agency representative called the ATAP global service centre for help after the tour leader informed him of the mishap.

AIG Travel later learned that a CT scan at the local hospital revealed that Sally had a compression fracture in her lower spine and she was hospitalised for observation. After we received her medical report, we reviewed and approved cover. We booked Sally on business class right after she was given clearance to travel while her husband remained in economy. Wheelchair and porter services at the airports and ground transfers at both ends were also arranged to ease their travel. The couple safely arrived back to Hong Kong and Sally was to have her follow up check at the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital.

Businessman holding his stomach in pain with stomachache or indigestion

Ronald was visiting his niece in Canada when he started experiencing abdominal pain. At the local hospital scans revealed that he had appendicitis and surgery was necessary. His niece called the A社 global service centre to seek help with his medical expenses.

AIG Travel quickly got in touch with his treating doctor to find out more about his condition and later followed up for updates after his surgery. Ronald remained in the hospital for another week under close observation and we monitored his progress throughout this time.

“I would like to thank you the AIG team. I unfortunately had an accident in China on 20 May 2018. I was seriously hurt from the accident and needed to come back to HK for medical care.

The AIG medical team gave us immediately help. The escort doctor and nurse carefully took care of me during the return journey and safely sent me to the Hong Kong Hospital. My wife and I deeply appreciated all that have been done.”

Business traveller injures his neck in China

Edward who was on a business trip to Shenzhen, China fell off his bicycle and injured his neck. He was rushed to the hospital where a MRI revealed that he sustained a severe spinal injury and his condition was critical. His travel agent called AIG for help to get him home to HK to get higher level of medical care.

We quickly got in touch with his treating doctor and learned that although the MRI had not shown any fractures it was likely that Edward had sustained spinal bone dislocation. After reviewing his condition, it was concluded that Edward required prolonged hospitalization and medical care and it would be best to get him home as soon as possible. Later the same day, after approving cover we arranged for a ground ambulance and a doctor-and-nurse escort team to bring him back home.  After Edward safely arrived in Hong Kong, he was directly admitted to the hospital.

Be careful when lifting your luggage!

Martha had just landed in New York when she badly injured herself trying to lift her luggage from a carousel at the airport. She was taken directly to a local hospital where an x-ray showed that she had severely fractured her left thigh bone. At this point her travelling companion called the ATAP global service centre for advice and help.

AIG Travel got in touch with her treating doctor and learned that surgery on her thigh bone would be necessary. After reviewing her medical report, we approved cover and the patient underwent surgery the next day. We followed up with the doctor after the procedure and were informed that she was recovering as expected.

After a further three days in the hospital, she was given clearance to travel and we quickly arranged for her return on business class accompanied by a non-medical escort to take care of her needs and ease her travel. Wheelchair and porter services at the airports as well as ground transfer at both ends were arranged.

Absolutely crazy taxi ride in Cairo city. Long exposure.

Natalie was on a rock climbing holiday in Germany when she fell and injured her lower back. An x-ray revealed that she had fractured her spine. She called us for assistance with her medical expenses and travel arrangements. AIG Travel got in touch with her treating doctor, and learned that she needed surgery very soon. Cover was approved after we reviewed her medical report so we provided the hospital with a guarantee of payment. She underwent the procedure two days later. We monitored her recovery progress the whole time by regularly getting updates from her treating doctor. We also constantly checked in on her as she was alone to make sure she was doing well. After confirming that she was fit to trave, we quickly issued her new return airline ticket on business class so that she would be comfortable on her return journey.

17 tourists were on a group trip to Jiangxi when the bus crashed and rolled over when the driver mishandled a turn. Two of the passengers were thrown out of the bus and another two were badly squashed by the seats. The others, including the tour guide and the bus driver, sustained multiple cuts and wounds. Carol, a member of staff from the travel agency, called us as soon as she got word of the accident. AIG Travel quickly got in touch with the tour guide on the bus, and he was able to provide information about the accident and rescue work that was being carried out at the time of the call. When we followed up with the guide later, we learned that all of the passengers had been admitted into the hospital. We despatched a two-person crisis response team to Wuyuan early the next day to assess the situation and work with the treating doctor. When the patients were well enough to be discharged, we arranged for their return via commercial airline and high-speed train. Medical escort was also arranged for patients when it was required.

Mark was on holiday in Yunnan, China when he started experiencing difficulties breathing and was sent to hospital. After a few days of treatment, his travel agent called us for assistance to get him home. AIG Travel quickly spoke to his treating doctor to get more information on his condition. We learned that he was suffering from high altitude sickness and had a lung infection. After obtaining his medical report, we approved his medical expenses. We also kept his sister and his travel agent back in Hong Kong updated on his condition and repatriation plans. Mark wished to go home after a few days in admission even though he had not recovered enough for air travel so we reviewed his condition with his doctor and determined that he was well enough for ground travel. After that, we arranged to get him home via high speed train accompanied by a medical escort throughout his journey. When he safely arrived back to Hong Kong, he was directly admitted to hospital for continued treatment.

  • Frequently asked questions: Travel Insurance

Travel insurance coverage can differ depending on the insurance provider and policy. In general, travel insurance can help cover expenses related to trip cancellations, medical emergencies, lost or stolen baggage, and travel interruptions.

In general, travel insurance covers the 3 main types of coverage for medical and accident expenses:

  • Medical coverage includes costs for accidents or illnesses during the trip, like fees for overseas doctors and follow-up visits after returning to Hong Kong.
  • Personal accident coverag e provides reimbursement for death, permanent disability, and severe burns resulting from accidents during the trip.
  • Emergency support coverage includes emergency medical evacuation or repatriation, visits for relatives, and more.

Comparing insurance policies is complicated. There are so many areas you can be insured in, but not all are equal in importance.  So how do you know which aspects to compare?

Review your trip quickly and identify the most likely scenarios to occur

First of all, you definitely want to make sure that you’re covered in the scenarios that are more likely to occur on your trip. Sure, it’s nice to know you’re being covered for kidnapping or terrorist attacks, but statistically speaking you’re more likely to come down with a bout of food poisoning or lose your luggage. So, review your trip quickly and find out the most likely situations to happen during your trip.

Here are key areas to look out for when deciding on the best value for travel insurance:

  • Medical coverage : Unless you’re invincible, there’s always the chance you’ll fall ill or get involved in an accident. Medical coverage can pay for your overseas medical expenses, as well as medical expenses incurred upon your return to Hong Kong.
  • Travel mishaps : Lost luggage, missed flights, trip delays and cancellations can happen on even the most meticulously-planned of trips.
  • Loss or damage to personal belongings : Get compensated if you are pickpocketed, your belongings get damaged in transit and so on.

Find your best fitted travel insurance plan

Review each plan you have come across and find out your best fitted plan. For instance, some plans may have a higher coverage on medical expenses, but not so much on personal perperty protection. After knowing which one you want, look at the premiums.

And if you’re not sure which one to choose from h ere are the 4 basic travel insurance policies in Hong Kong.

So, which travel insurance policy offers the highest coverage for medical and accident expenses? Here is the comparison of travel insurance for a 7-day single trip to Japan :

When planning for riskier activities that have a higher chance of accidents, it is important to consider getting insurance coverage specifically for those activities, including skiing, scuba diving, and parachuting.

Note that some travel insurance policies have limitations on coverage, including restrictions on height and depth. For example, if a skiing location exceeds a certain height, the travel insurance may not cover the activity. We strongly recommend thoroughly reviewing the details of insurance policies.

When searching for travel insurance policies that provide the highest coverage for skiing, scuba diving, and parachuting, there are several options to consider.

Here is the comparison of travel insurance for a 7-day single trip to Japan:

Losing your phone, wallet, or any other personal property can ruin your trip, but if you get travel insurance beforehand, you can be assured of being compensated for your loss!

When it comes to claims for property loss, there are certain things you need to do to meet the insurance company’s requirements. For instance, if you encounter theft or damage to your property, you should report it to the local police within 24 hours and get a written report.

And when you make a claim, you’ll need to provide receipts for the items that were lost or damaged. Make sure the receipts have the purchase date, price, model, and category of each item. Also, keep in mind that the insurance company might subtract the depreciation value of the property when calculating the coverage amount.

Here is a comparison of the travel insurance offering the highest coverage for property losses:

Last tip: Get your insurance as early as possible

Buying your travel insurance in haste robs you of the chance to compare the various options and get a value-for-money policy that offers enough coverage at a reasonable price. You definitely don’t want to spend too much on a policy, or get one that’s so thin it barely covers you for anything. So spend a bit of time to pick the best policy for you, taking a careful consideration of various factors, including your destination, trip duration, and planned activities.

Travel insurance protects you not just the time when you’re on holiday to enjoy life, but also the weeks before you leave Hong Kong. So, the only way you can have a trip with the peace in mind is to buy your travel insurance in advance—not in the cab, on your smartphone as you rush to the airport!  Don’t forget to check out the latest offers from MoneySmart travel insurance selection.
