  • hunter valley

Once a major junction on the convict-built Great North Road, the historic village of Wollombi now moves at a slower pace. Stroll its well-preserved streets, enjoy lively festivals and visit tasty markets. Nearby are Australia’s oldest wine region and the World Heritage-listed Yengo National Park.

History & heritage

Be charmed by Wollombi’s well-preserved streets lined with cafes, shops and a country pub as well as many fine 19th-century buildings. Visit the Wollombi Endeavour Museum, set inside the former courthouse from 1866, then pick up a map to follow the easy 1km heritage walk around town. Admire the Gothic sandstone St John’s Church and St Michael’s Church, which was built in 1840 then dismantled stone-by-stone following a flood and rebuilt at its present site in 1893.

Learn about the area’s fascinating Indigenous heritage on a tour with Wollombi Aboriginal Cultural Experiences . Dharug woman Leanne King will immerse you in traditional cultural practices and share stories of local lore on half- and full-day tours and multi-day camps.

Food & drink

Undercliff Winery  is on the banks of Yengo Creek and planted their first iconic Hunter Valley varieties in 1990. The cellar door showcases their small-batch wines alongside work from local artists. On the banks of Wollombi Brook, the family-operated Wollombi Wines hand-picks semillon and shiraz grapes from low-yield vines first planted in 1994. There’s no cellar door but you can stay on-site at the charming vineyard cottage.

At the  Wollombi Markets , you can browse and taste local produce, including wine, cheese, jams, bread and smallgoods. The market is held on the Monday of each long weekend (Easter, June and October) and on Australia Day. In addition to fresh produce and artisan goods, there are stalls selling locally made handicrafts and other gifts. Refuel at the Wollombi Tavern , which dates back to 1868 and was originally known as the Wollombi Wine Saloon.

Wollombi Historic town in the Hunter Valley.

The charming town of Wollombi is a tribute to yesteryear and has lots of lovely old heritage buildings. It is also set in the heart of the idyllic Hunter Valley Wine District. Tree-covered peaks surround the valley and emphasise the beauty of the setting.

Wildlife is plentiful in the locality and visitors may espy wombats, wallabies and kangaroos roaming around.

Wollombi street scenery

The town’s historic walk takes in the majority of the 19th century buildings and sandstone churches. The churches are popular venues for out-of-towners to stage their weddings. The Endeavour Museum is housed in the old courthouse and houses a great collection of exhibits and photographs that illustrate local history.

The boutique wineries in the rural areas surrounding Wollombi are a must for viticulture fans. It is worthwhile timing your visit to coincide with the annual Sculpture in the Vineyards Festival. This runs between October and January.

Koolang Observatory is 15kms south of town and a family-friendly facility with cutting-edge telescopes. Demand for views of the galaxies is high and visitors need to pre-book their slot.

The observatory is 15kms down the notorious Great North Road. This route was built by convict labour in the 1820s and linked Sydney and the Hunter Valley. A drive along parts of the 240km road where it was hewn out of solid rock gives glimpses into the hardships faced by the convicts. The road skirts the eastern edge of Yengo National Park.

Wollombi historic building

Yengo together with the nearby Watagans National Park are ideal for bushwalks. The city of Newcastle is only one hour away by car or bus and has a diverse range of draws which include eight beaches and Fort Scratchley Historic Site.

Accommodation in Wollombi covers the whole gamut from cosy bed and breakfasts to fully equipped vineyard cottages. There are also peaceful campsites at the Yengo and Watagans national parks.

Great North Road – Convict Trail

The Convict Trail is the name for convict built Great North Road, the surrounding land and historic buildings.

World Heritage Listing

In July 2010 the Great North Road and ten other Australian sites with a significant association with convict transportation were inscribed as a group on the World Heritage List as the Australian Convict Sites. These sites present “the best surviving examples of large-scale convict transportation and the colonial expansion of European powers through the presence and labour of convicts”.

From which ever direction you travel to Wollombi you are traveling on part of the Great North Road thus along the Convict Trail. The Convict Trail Project has produced a series of E-brochures to make your drive more enjoyable.

The Great North Road is a 240 km convict-built masterpiece constructed between 1826 and 1836 to provide an overland route from Sydney to Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. It was — and remains — an extraordinary feat of engineering as it traverses sandstone gorges, razorback ridges and towering passes. Convict built remains such as stone retaining walls, pick dressed cuttings, culverts, bridges and stone cut drains can be seen when driving along the road or when walking in Dharug and Yengo National Parks.

Hunter Valley Wine Tours

Prior to European settlement, the land now occupied by Wollombi Village was a significant meeting point for coastal Aboriginal peoples. Wollombi means “ meeting place ” or “ meeting place of the waters ” and is an important ceremonial meeting place. There are over 300 significant Aboriginal sites dating back over 13,000 years with many sites in Yengo National Park and surrounds, well-preserved and can be visited today via walking and driving tracks. Steeped in colonial history, Wollombi was established as the administrative centre of the district in the 1830’s. Remnants of the original, convict built Great North Road are still visible today as you make your descent into the Wollombi Valley along Tourist Drive 33 . Many buildings in Wollombi Village and surrounding private homes are well preserved examples of Australia’s convict and colonial history . Take the Historic Wollombi Walk or follow the Convict Trail to experience some of Wollombi’s convict history.
