Beyoncé delivers a powerhouse, out-of-this-world experience at Soldier Field concert

After an hourlong rain delay, the show went on as planned to the delight of nearly 50,000 adoring fans in the first of two weekend shows in chicago..

Beyoncé performs during her concert Saturday night at Soldier Field. The show was delayed an hour due to rain.

Beyoncé is the wave of the future. Her Renaissance World Tour proved as much as it descended on Soldier Field Saturday night for the first of two sold-out weekend shows. The 2 1 ⁄ 2 -hour extravaganza was pure escape into an otherworldly existence, perhaps the closest we mere mortals will get to going to the moon.

Full of the singer’s continually evolving progressive music, tons of sci-fi realism, android-human blurred lines, and an abundance of advanced technology that sets the bar for every other stadium tour to come, the road trek is also a rebirth of the megastar herself, seven long years after her last solo tour in 2016.

Now in her 40s and with more than 100 million records sold and a record-setting 32 Grammys, Beyonce is edging ever-closer to the throne left vacant by Queen Tina Turner, to whom she paid loving tribute with a cover of “River Deep, Mountain High,” asking the crowd, “Was she your hero, too?”

And her star power only gets brighter as her music continues to evolve, from earlier themes of love and sexuality to a platform of self-empowerment, race and the Black experience, feminism and — with her latest album — a queer celebration. The disco-fueled “Renaissance,” her record-breaking seventh No. 1 album, released almost a year ago to the day, is dedicated to her inspirational gay Uncle Johnny, to whom she paid homage several times during the night, most notably on the blistering “Heated.”

After an hourlong rain delay that pushed the start of the extravaganza to 9 p.m. and threatened the disintegration of the amazing costumes, makeup and hair that scores of devoted fans put so much work into, Beyoncé finally appeared, ascending on a platform from beneath the stage and eliciting ear-piercing screams with her first few words, “Chicago, I love you.” (The sentiment echoed the reaction to an announcement minutes prior that Queen Bey had given $100,000 to several small, Black-owned businesses in Chicago through her BeyGOOD foundation.)

Divided into seven stylized segments, the show ran through every track on the new album, complete with dazzling high-fashion costumes, and set changes that truly took a village of crew members to rotate.

The first section, “Opening Act” (yes, she was her own opener), was Beyoncé at her most ethereal, dressed in a feather-decorated ballgown and sitting atop a silver piano as she belted out R&B numbers from early in her career, including the Destiny’s Child track “Dangerously in Love” and “Flaws and All” (from the 2006 album “B’Day”).

Beyoncé triumphantly stopped the rain in Chicago tonight with her powerful first show of two in The Windy City. The rain ended just as she took the stage with close to 48,000 fans thunderously showing her their appreciation.

The rain gave way to clear skies in Chicago Saturday night, allowing for the first of two Beyonce weekend concerts at Soldier Field.

“Opening Act” was also one of the few parts where Beyonce talked directly to the crowd, noticing the effort they put in to their homages to the Queen’s style. “How do you all look so good? You look like you planned your outfits months ago. I bet you got up at 8 to get ready,” she said to the legions dressed up in rhinestone cowboy hats, glitter-bombed dresses and unitards matching the ones the singer has debuted on the tour.

As much as her show was an incredible display of theatrics, Beyoncé never let her powerful voice waver, showing she’s still got one of the best set of pipes in the business.

As the night progressed, so did the energy and unbelievable choreography, as well as the thematic exploration, most of it centering on sci-fi, Afrofuturism and metamorphosis — a dose of “Metropolis” meets “Ex Machina.”

Beyoncé delivers a powerhouse performance filled with super high-tech wizardry, talented backup dancers and dazzling costumes on Saturday night at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Beyoncé delivers a powerhouse performance filled with super high-tech wizardry, talented backup dancers and dazzling costumes Saturday night at Soldier Field in Chicago.

In the beginning of the “Renaissance” segment, she broke out of a metallic costume shell to deliver “I’m That Girl.” For “Black Parade” (part of the “Opulence” section), she rode a chrome military tank onto the stage catwalk, finishing the song with her eyes closed, fist raised in the air in a gesture of Black pride as many in the crowd did the same. (This is generally the section where Beyoncé’s star child Blue Ivy Carter appears, though she was noticeably absent on this night.)

During the “Motherboard” segment, Beyoncé paid tribute to Chicago house music (and later the choreography did likewise).

In “Church Girl” (during the “Anointed” segment), Beyoncé and her backup vocalists wore monochrome dresses that literally changed colors, with robot arms spray-painting them to look like stained glass.

It was just one of the ways advanced tech became a full-on supporting character in the show, alongside massive video walls, drone cameras and fisheye lenses that made the whole night seem like it was a Super Bowl halftime show on the Chicago Bears’ home turf. Her gravity-defying dancers and incredibly talented backup singers and house band (guitar, drums, keys, bass and full horn section) got their due in dedicated solos during set-change interludes as a giant disco ball hung overhead, giving off Studio 54 vibes.

As the show wrapped up with Beyoncé hooked up to high wires and effortlessly gliding over the audience, she had one last benevolent message to impart: “I hope you felt inspired, seen and loved and I hope you take that love everywhere you go.”

Soldier Field Releases Details About Crowds, Parking and More For Taylor Swift Chicago Shows

The moment 190,500 of you have been waiting for is nearly here, by francie swidler • published may 31, 2023 • updated on june 2, 2023 at 7:42 am.

Head's up, Chicago Swifties: The show you've been waiting for is just days away. But you already knew that. What you may not know though, is all the ins and outs of seeing a show at Soldier Field.

"The final countdown to Taylor Swift's 3-night foray at Soldier Field is finally upon us," a press release from the stadium said Wednesday. "Taylor Swift will play to sold-out audiences at Soldier Field all three nights (June, 2, 3 & 4)," the release continues, adding that Swift's "The Eras Tour" is one of the "most anticipated musical events of 2023."

Feeling out of the loop? We'll catch you up on the Chicago news you need to know. Sign up for the weekly Chicago Catch-Up newsletter here.

MORE: Pick-Up, Timing, Restrictions: What Parents Need to Know About Taylor Swift's Chicago Shows

In stadiums across the county, those musical events have yet to disappoint fans, despite pouring rain and security snafus . And as more than 60,000 Swift fans descend on Soldier Field each night -- not including parents and ride-share drivers dropping off and picking up the thousands of concert goers -- here's how it's all expected to go down.

Each night of Swift's three-night Soldier Field residency is sold out, the stadium says. According to Soldier Field officials, the stadium currently holds 63,500 people. And though it's the smallest NFL stadium in the nation, it's significantly bigger than Chicago's other large venues.

For example, Wrigley Field, where Bruce Springsteen, Dead & Company and Fall Out Boy are playing later this summer, has a capacity of 41,649. The United Center, where Aerosmith is set to play in September, holds 23,500.

However you slice it -- the show, and the area near the stadium, are expected to be packed.

There certainly will be.

"Guests may experience heavy traffic at certain times," Soldier Field says. Additionally, several construction projects in and out of Chicago may cause additional backups and delays, including the Kennedy Expressway construction as well as ongoing resurfacing and lane closures along DuSable Lake Shore Drive .

Drop Off and Pick Up

There will be designated drop-off and pick-up locations for parents and chaperones coming to the stadium, Soldier Field notes. Here's a breakdown:

Those attending the show can be dropped off at the 18th Drive Turnaround, just west of Lake Shore Drive's 18th Drive exit ramp. However, due to heavy traffic, officials suggest dropping fans off at Columbus Drive or Michigan Avenue and then having them walking to the museum campus.

For pick-up after the show, officials say reunification for parents, guardians and rideshare drivers will take place on Columbus Drive between Roosevelt and Balbo, beginning at 10:30 p.m.

"We encourage parents and chaperones to use this area in order to quickly reunite with family and friends," Soldier Field's release states. "Drivers may use the alphabetical signage markers to provide guests with identifiers. Stadium security and parking personnel will be present to provide a safe and organized operation."

Additionally, stadium security will be onsite to "provide a safe and organized operation."

Both Soldier Field and city officials are "strongly" encouraging ticket holders to use public transportation, and to arrive early.

When Do Gates, Parking Lots Open?

Each day of the show, merchandise sales outside the stadium will begin at 12 p.m. in four locations, Soldier Field says. Parking lots open at 2 p.m., and show gates open at 4:30 p.m.

The show is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m., with openers OWEN and Girl in Red Friday and Saturday, and Grace Adams and Muna Sunday.

According to the stadium, Swift will take the stage around 8 p.m., with a set that lasts for at least three hours.

If you didn't already buy a parking spot at Soldier Field for the show, you're out of luck.

"Parking lots are currently sold out from the advance sales of parking," Soldier Field says. However, some lots nearby may have spots available.

McCormick Place Lot B, Millennium and South Grant Park garages will be open, with Millennium Park Garage offering a shuttle to and from the stadium. The shuttle will pick up fans at lower Randolph and pick them up at the Metra 18th stairs between 4 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Grant Park South, Grant Park North and Millennium Lakeside Garages won't be offering shuttle service, however.

What Can You Bring In To Soldier Field?

Soldier Field adheres to the NFL bag policy, which limits the size and type of bags that are allowed into stadiums.

Only bags that are "clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12," the NFL says. "No buckles, grommets/hardware or décor can be concealing any part of the bag."

In other words: The bag must literally be all clear.

Posters will be allowed in, Soldier Field says , but cannot exceed 24 inches x 24 inches.

Don't Have a Ticket?

Buyer beware, the Better Business Bureau says.

While many tickets offered for sold-out shows like Swift's may be legitimate, others are not, BBB president and CEO Steve J. Bernas warns .

"One of the first things to do in advance is to be on the lookout for fake websites, tickets, and merchandise," Bernas says. "You don’t want to show up at the gate after waiting months and paying hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars only to find out your ticket is fake."

Make sure you're buying from a verified seller, and use your credit card for any purchases, as it offers the best fraud protection of any payment method.

"There are countless ways for consumers to find tickets online, with online marketplaces, ticket sellers, resellers, and unfortunately, some are rip-offs," Bernas adds.

MORE: No Ticket To Taylor Swift at Soldier Field? The Stadium Has a Message For You: Stay Away

According to Bernas, buyers should use "extra caution" when buying tickets sold on online marketplace platforms like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.

"Buying tickets on these sites from people you do not know is similar to buying tickets in a dark alley," Bernas said. "Scammers are skilled at providing realistic tickets and fake receipts."

Additionally, Soldier Field is asking those without tickets to refrain from coming to the stadium.

"People without tickets are strongly discouraged from coming to the Soldier Field campus," Soldier Field's release states. "No part of the show will be visible and stadium acoustics do not provide any audible quality outside of it."

Will Celebrities Will Be There?

While Hollywood stars, athletes and musicians have been spotted at Swift's previous shows on the tour , it remains to be seen who might make an appearance at the upcoming Chicago shows.

Some good news, though: one who may not be welcome at Soldier Field already took in a show his new home stadium in Foxborough, New Jersey .

The Chicago Bears are prepared to provide $2 billion in private funding for a new publicly owned enclosed stadium and park space in the city, the team confirmed Monday.

The lakefront site would replace Soldier Field and increase open space on the museum campus by 20%, and provide a prime location to host the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four and year-round community events, a source familiar with the deal said.

A poll showed that 80% of Chicagoans support a museum campus location, and 77% want to keep the team in the city, the source said.

Chicago Bears’ domed stadium proposal sparks excitement, questions — and early opposition

The poll of 500 registered voters by McGuire Research also found 60% of Chicagoans support using public money for a publicly owned stadium.

As proposed, the new stadium would be in the area of Waldron Drive, just south of the Bears’ current home at Soldier Field. The project would include open plazas, paths and landscaping, with access to the lakefront, and could include saving the Soldier Field colonnade in honor of veterans.

Bears President and CEO Kevin Warren issued a statement that the team is proud to contribute more than $2 billion to build a stadium and improve open space.

“The future stadium of the Chicago Bears will bring a transformative opportunity to our region — boosting the economy, creating jobs, facilitating mega events and generating millions in tax revenue,” Warren said. “We look forward to sharing more information when our plans are finalized.”

Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jack Lavin called the proposal “impressive and exciting.”

“This investment will enhance our reputation as a world-class city and tourist and convention destination,” Lavin said. “And it will encourage more investment.”

A city ordinance generally prohibits private development on the lakefront. The nonprofit group Friends of the Parks filed suit and defeated a previous plan by Star Wars creator George Lucas to build a museum south of Soldier Field. The team is expected to meet with the group soon to share its plans.

Jason Wambsgans/Chicago Tribune)

The group issued a statement on Friday, before the latest news, cautioning against a rush to judgment on the issue.

“Right now, our main reaction is frustration at the apparent urgency for decisions to be made,” Interim Executive Director Gin Kilgore wrote. “Discussions about projects as impactful as new stadiums that will require significant public investment and that will profoundly affect the literal and figurative landscape of Chicago and our neighborhoods should not be rushed.”

More than a year ago, the Bears spent $197 million to buy the former Arlington International Racecourse in Arlington Heights, with plans to build a $2 billion domed stadium and surrounding development there.

What to know about the Chicago Bears’ possible move from Soldier Field — and which other suburbs are vying for the stadium

Those plans have stalled as team officials have recoiled from increased property taxes and have been unable to reach an agreement with local school districts. Economists generally warn against publicly financed stadiums as a bad investment, and Chicago still is on the hook to pay off bonds for the current Chicago White Sox stadium and the renovated Soldier Field.

Recently, the team has begun working with the city of Chicago on the lakefront site. The Bears also have had conversations with the White Sox about seeking public loans to help build new stadiums for each team.

Bears Plan to Commit $2B to New Domed Stadium in Chicago

  • Author: Joseph Salvador

Chicago Bears

The  Chicago Bears  plan to build a new domed stadium south of Soldier Field, according to reports.

The franchise intends to invest $2 billion in the publicly owned domed stadium and park space that would feature year-round community amenities. The domed stadium would allow Chicago to bid to host events such as Super Bowls and NCAA Final Fours.

“The Chicago Bears are proud to contribute over $2 billion to build a stadium and improve open spaces for all families, fans and the general public to enjoy in the City of Chicago,” Bears president and CEO Kevin Warren said in a statement. “The future stadium of the Chicago Bears will bring a transformative opportunity to our region—boosting the economy, creating jobs, facilitating mega events and generating millions in tax revenue. We look forward to sharing more information when our plans are finalized.”

In February 2023, the organization finalized the purchase of a 326-acre property for $197.2 million that formerly housed Arlington International Racecourse in Arlington Heights, Ill. However, plans to build a stadium there stalled, and the team began considering other sites last summer .

The Chicago Tribune reports that a poll indicates 77% of Chicagoans support keeping the team in the city .

Soldier Field is the smallest current NFL venue with a capacity of 61,500. It’s also the oldest stadium in the league, having originally opened in 1924, although it underwent a major renovation in the early 2000s. The team’s lease at Soldier Field runs through 2033, although it can be broken earlier if the team is willing to pay a fee.

Source - Chicago Bears plan new stadium south of Soldier Field

C HICAGO -- The Bears are shifting their focus to remain in the City of Chicago with plans to build a new stadium south of Soldier Field, a source familiar with the team's plan told ESPN.

The news comes nearly 13 months after the Bears closed on the 326-acre property that formerly housed Arlington International Racecourse in Arlington Heights, Illinois. The team signed an agreement in 2021 to purchase the property for $197.2 million but has not begun developing the site that was expected to feature a multibillion-dollar stadium project and include restaurants, retail space and real estate.

The Bears are planning to invest more than $2 billion in private money into a publicly owned domed stadium and park space that would feature year-round community amenities, a source said. Though the team has not released renderings of its proposed lakefront stadium, a source confirmed the location would be immediately south of the current site of Soldier Field and maintain parking in the south lot.

"The Chicago Bears are proud to contribute over $2 billion to build a stadium and improve open spaces for all families, fans and the general public to enjoy in the City of Chicago," Bears team president and CEO Kevin Warren said in a statement to ESPN. "The future stadium of the Chicago Bears will bring a transformative opportunity to our region -- boosting the economy, creating jobs, facilitating mega events and generating millions in tax revenue. We look forward to sharing more information when our plans are finalized."

Soldier Field is currently the smallest stadium in the NFL, with a capacity of 61,500. The Bears' plan is to remain there until a new stadium is built, a source said, at which time the current site would be torn down aside from the building's colonnades. The plan, then, would be to construct parks and athletic fields for public use on the site.

The Bears' current lease at Soldier Field is set to expire in 2033.

A source said the stadium project will create 20% more space on the museum campus (which encompasses Soldier Field as well as three notable museums) for the public to use year-round, as opposed to solely during Bears home games.

A recent independent poll conducted by McGuire Research surveyed 500 registered voters living in the City of Chicago on several topics related to the construction of a new Bears stadium.

According to results obtained by ESPN, 80% of those polled supported a domed stadium that would host major events throughout the year on the museum campus, while 77% supported the proposed location due to the efforts to keep the Bears in the City of Chicago. The results concluded that more than six in 10 Chicagoans support using public money for a publicly owned stadium.

During a community meeting in September 2022 when the team revealed its plan for the Arlington Park site, chairman George McCaskey said the Bears would "seek no public funding for direct stadium structure construction" but would need assistance to complete the rest of the multibillion-dollar project.

The public component for the proposed lakefront stadium is not yet known.

The Bears began exploring options for a new stadium beyond Arlington Heights last summer when they announced that those plans were "at risk" as negotiations over property taxes reached a $100 million impasse.

"The property's original assessment at five times the 2021 tax value, and the recent settlement with Churchill Downs [the property's former owner] for 2022 being three times higher, fails to reflect the property is not operational and not commercially viable in its current state," the Bears said in a statement in June 2023.

The Bears met with mayors from Naperville and Chicago to explore alternative stadium sites, while Waukegan, a northern Illinois suburb, and Aurora, a suburb 40-plus miles west of Chicago, also pitched the team on building a stadium there.

Warren and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson issued a joint statement after meeting last June about their commitment to working on a plan to keep the Bears in Chicago. The two have met several times since.

"Today we met and discussed our shared values and commitment to the city of Chicago, the importance of deep roots and the need for equitable community investment throughout the city," the June 2023 statement read. "We are both committed to the idea that the city and its major civic institutions must grow and evolve together to meet the needs of the future. We look forward to continuing the dialogue around these shared values."

Should the Bears succeed in their plan to build a new lakefront stadium, a source indicated the team likely will put the Arlington Park property up for sale.
