ACCOMMODATION

Explore sala’s camp, masai mara safari.

Your Masai Mara safari will begin the moment you arrive at Sala’s Camp. It sits in one of the best locations in the whole of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Intimate and secluded, it is nestled along the tree lined banks of the Sand River in the southern tip of the reserve. As such, it is less than two kilometres away from the Tanzanian border and enjoys a splendid wild outlook and wonderful views into the Serengeti National Park. This also means that it is one of the first camps in the Mara to witness the legendary annual wildebeest migration which thunders by from June to September each year. With teeming wildlife year round, Sala’s game drives never disappoint. Get excited by exploring some of the wildlife and scenery you can expect to see on your Masai Mara safari, as well as the beautiful camp you will be relaxing in. Cook-out breakfasts and sundowners out on the savannah make for magical memories. The landscape is spectacular, the birdlife impressive and the feeling of being totally immersed in nature cannot be beaten.

SEE THE MIGRATION

Kenya’s Masai Mara is home to one of the largest overland migrations of animals in the world. Between June and September each year, 1.5 million wildebeest, 500,000 Thompson gazelles, 200,000 zebra and thousands of other antelope cross the border into Kenya from Tanzania on their seasonal migration. Drama, dust and danger abound. Guests of Sala’s camp who are lucky enough to catch this famous spectacle are treated to one of the greatest shows on earth. Witnessing the Great Migration is a real bonus to an already mind-blowing Masai Mara safari experience. Searching for greener pastures, exact movements of the wildebeest herds change each year. As they enter into Kenya however, crossing the Mara River is one path they cannot avoid. Famous for providing documentary worthy footage, river crossings are a tense spectacle. Predators lurk and the journey is treacherous. Be sure to have your camera at the ready as you never know what might happen.

ENCOUNTER THE BIG FIVE

Sala’s Camp provides a gateway to one of the world’s most prolific wildlife ecosystems. From the famous ‘big five’ (African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, lion and black rhino) to the ‘little five’ and the plain old ‘ugly five’, there are animals to delight all ages and interests. Birdlife is prolific, with over 500 species recorded, over 50 of which are predator birds. A Masai Mara safari is also one of the best places to encounter big cats, hence why it was chosen as the location for the well-known TV series ‘Big Cat Diaries’. With one of the highest concentration of predators in the world, there is never a dull day.

If wildlife photography is your thing, then the Masai Mara is your place. Photographic opportunities abound on a Masai Mara safari, from dramatic skylines to golden light and of course the diverse animal life you will come across. Our guides are experts at helping you get in position for the best shots and our vehicles are designed for maximum game viewing pleasure.

DID YOU KNOW?

The word ‘Mara’ comes from the Maa word for ‘spotted’ (Maa being the official language of the Maasai people). This is because the landscape is dotted with acacia trees and wildlife, making it appear like spots from above. Therefore, as you fly into your Masai Mara safari be sure to look out of the window for animals scattered on the plains below. This is what gives the ‘Mara’ its name, which comes from Maa word for ‘spotted’ (Maa being the official language of the Maasai people). Most of the wonderful safari guides and spotters at Sala’s Camp are from the local Maasai community. This semi-nomadic group of people have traversed the grasslands of Kenya and Tanzania for hundreds of years with their cattle. As such, they hold a deep understanding for and appreciation of the landscape. Our professionally trained Maasai guides are passionate and knowledgeable about the animals, plants and trees you will encounter on safari and cannot wait to share their insights with you.

The striking appearance of the Maasai is characterised by their vibrant red and blue ‘shukas’, or blankets, and colourful beaded jewellery. You can take a little slice of your Masai Mara Safari experience home with you by purchasing some of the intricate beadwork made by a local Masai women’s group in our Sala’s Camp gift shop.

Sala's Camp in Masai Mara National Reserve

Sala's Camp

Lodge location Masai Mara National Reserve

Intimate luxury tucked away in a remote corner of the Masai Mara.

Far off in the remote south where the Masai Mara meets the Serengeti lies elegant and secluded Sala’s Camp. This idyllic tented camp’s seven comfortable safari tents are scattered between shady trees on the banks of the Sand and Keekorok Rivers. This camp offers guests the best of both worlds – a view of the great migration in the Serengeti’s Northern Corridor during your stay in the Mara.

At a glance

Private pool, game drives, luxurious tented suites, treat yourself, stay connected, bring the family, great migration, nearest airport, stay together, scenically situated on the banks of the sand and keekorok rivers.

Unpretentious luxury in the remote Kenyan wilderness, Sala's Camp has all the necessary ingredients for an outstanding safari experience. With only seven tents located on the property, the camp can only accommodate a maximum of eighteen guests at any one time. The camp is elegantly decorated and each safari tent features contemporary touches making guests feel both pampered and at home. This eco friendly camp makes use of solar-powered electricity and has a standby generator for refrigeration and charging devices. Aside from the camp’s man-made features, Sala's Camp is rich in natural ambiance and scenic beauty. The camp is located right along the Northern Corridor of the Serengeti , the scene of the world-famous great migration . It makes the camp an excellent location for guests to spot wildlife around the camp and for watching dramatic river crossings.

Each safari tent at Sala's Camp is fully decked out for the comfort of the camp’s guests. In addition to six luxury tents for one or two guests, there’s one safari tent suitable for either a romantic honeymoon or a family of up to four. This larger safari tent has a double room with a central sitting area. All tents are outfitted with glass fronted rooms, comfortable beds with crisp linens (and a hot water bottle for cold nights), en-suite bathrooms complete with hot showers, comfortable bathtubs, running water and flushing toilets. Despite the contemporary touches, the entire camp exudes a romantic sense of nostalgia of safari days gone by. Although, we're not quite sure if safari tents of yesteryear had the touch of decadence that you'll experience when you dip into your own private plunge pool. After a quick dip in the refreshing waters, you can sit back and relax on your own private deck with your favourite ice cold drink in hand.

Sala’s Camp is well known and liked for its hospitality and meticulous care for its guests. During your stay you'll enjoy full board complete with delicious, wholesome meals prepared over open fires. The camp's chefs prepare all meals using fresh seasonal ingredients locally sourced from Maasai farms. Home baked pastries, breads and biscuits are the camp's specialty. All meals are complemented with your favourite beverages. In the mornings enjoy your first cup of steaming hot and fragrant fresh coffee from your private deck overlooking the river and the Serengeti beyond. Have your bush breakfast served on the vast African plains. Enjoy packed lunches on safari and sit down to lovely sundowners featuring your favorite drinks and tasty snacks. As the African night falls and the stars twinkle in the endless sky above, have a seat next to a blazing fire for mouthwatering fireside dinner and a glass of fine wine.

Activities at Sala's Camp

Sala’s Camp has front row seats to the great migration , but there’s so much more to keep on the lookout for. The camp’s resident Maasai guides and trackers are highly skilled in helping you spot the big five, the little five and the ugly five. Go for an exhilarating game drive, take a thrilling guided bush walk, get a unique bird’s eye view during a hot air balloon ride, learn more about Maasai culture during a visit to a Masai manyatta (village), grab your binoculars and go bird-watching or spend an evening stargazing from your hammock. The camp even offers activities for your little ones and offers a special program that teaches kids the secrets of the bush. Keep in mind that some activities may require a surcharge.

Tripadvisor comments Sala's Camp

I would absolutely return to Sala’s Camp! We were not there for the migration but we saw plenty of animals. As we returned back to camp our guide pointed out we saw the big 5 just on our first day. The location, in the Mara overlooking the Sand River and Serengeti National Park, can’t be beat. The area is teaming with wildlife. On our last night, a leopard quietly passed through camp. The baboons alerting us were not so quiet. Also, the staff was extremely helpful and warm. The owner even pulled us out a ditch after our vehicle got stuck in the mud. Lillian1969 from Santa Fe, New Mexico
We traveled to the camp with two friends and our 3 children. We couldn't have hoped for a better place. As a family option, having the tents with two connected bedrooms and bathrooms is great. The tent and restaurant area are beautifully decorated. Between game drives, the kids could jump in the private pool on our deck overlooking the river. The safari breakfast was incredible. They set up the grill and cooked us fresh eggs and pancakes with fruit and drinks, all out in the Mara. The food at the camp was amazing. We felt incredibly spoiled the entire time we were there. We saw 2 leopards in trees, multiple lions, and all the other wonder animals you would expect. We would go back and enjoy it again! Nancy from Nairobi, Kenya

2 Sala's Camp

ACCOMMODATION DETAILS

Enjoy breathtaking scenery and exciting wildlife in traditional safari style.  Each luxury tented camp has been carefully designed to give you the ultimate comfort with spectacular views of the river.

The camp can accommodate fourteen to sixteen people in seven individual canvas tents – perfect for a family holiday. Bring your family to the ultimate African safari as children are very welcome. Each tent is reminiscent of the traditional under-canvas safari, with a pleasing touch of the modern.

All tents have hot showers, flushing toilets and running water. Tents are equipped with shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, mosquito repellent, torches, dressing gowns and a sewing kit.  The honeymoon tent can be used for families accommodating an extra two children.

Unwind on comfy sofas with various engaging books on birds and wildlife. Enjoy a fun board game or just relax in our hammocks and watch the world go by. If you are feeling energetic, join in on one of the occasional friendly games of volleyball by the river, or try exercising on the trampoline.

Enjoy a relaxed pre dinner drink around the fire before making your way to one of the African dinner settings. From formal candlelit tables under the stars, to silver service in a cosy tent, you can truly unwind whilst listening to the tales of real African adventures by your hosts.

We can arrange morning, evening or even full day game drives, setting out at dawn to watch the natural world as it wakes up. A full day drive takes you further afield to different parts of the Mara where a picnic under a Kigalia africana tree (also known as Sausage tree) can be set up.

Discover the Mara’s vast array of birds from the privacy of your tent or as you lounge in one of the hammocks around camp.

Balloon rides are a fun way to view the game and enjoy the expanse of the Mara. It is also an exhilarating way to view the wildebeest migration in action. Balloon rides can be organised in camp or before arrival.

Sala’s camp has the good fortune to be located on the convergence of two rivers, and in the heart of the Masai Mara. This secluded spot, offers tranquillity, and tremendous views over the Sand River towards Tanzania and the Serengeti. From your tents you will be able to enjoy an abundance of birdlife and wildlife and the indigenous environment. The camp prides itself on its hospitality, and from this wonderful location one can easily explore the vast Masai Mara Reserve.

During the Great Wildebeest Migration in the months of July to September, Sala’s Camp is extremely well located as many of the animals move back from the Serengeti in search of lush grasslands in the Mara. The game viewing during this time is exceptional, with dramatic river crossings, and plentiful predators.

Thank you so much for all the effort you put into planning and arranging our itinerary – everything went smoothly and everyone we dealt with in Africa was delightful, thanks to you. It was a magical trip and far exceeded all my expectations – I could have stayed at Ol Seki forever.

Masai Mara, Kenya & Zanzibar, October 2019

We had a fantastic time – by breaking the holiday into plenty of different stages, it felt more like a month’s holiday, rather than just 2 weeks. Lewa Safari Camp was very luxurious and comfortable.

The impact of your stay

The Safari Collection firmly believe that we should tread delicately on our planet, leaving behind footprints made only by sandy toes. Their aim is to not only share the incredible natural wonders of East Africa, but to be passionate protectors of it. They created the Footprint Foundation to protect their environment and impact positively on the communities they work alongside.

Every stay contributes through:

  • Staying at Sala’s Camp and paying 2023: US$ 145 – 245 per adult per night (US$75 per child) Masai Mara Park Fees and Rhino Conservation Fee. The park fee helps safeguard the biodiversity of the Masai Mara and a donation is made to the Mara Rhino Rangers who are protecting this threatened species in the area around Sala’s Camp.
  • Supporting The Pangolin Project  – the only organisation of its kind in East Africa. It promotes pangolin awareness through community education and has a research team based at Sala’s Camp.
  • Showing interest in the Mara Cheetah Project and Mara Lion Project, who are based at Sala’s when they are in the south of the Masai Mara. There are opportunities for you to visit the project or to have dinner with, or a lecture from, one of their team about the research and conservation activities.
  • Staying at Sasaab and paying US$ 145 per adult per night (US$77.50 per child) Samburu Park Fee & Westgate Conservation Fee, which contributes directly towards the running of Westgate Conservancy on which Sasaab is situated, as well as supporting the daily running costs of wildlife management.
  • Sasaab employs 75% of their team from the local Samburu community, and your stay allows for the sustainable development of livelihoods to compliment the challenges increasingly faced by traditional pastoralist lifestyles.
  • Sasaab has also been awarded an official certification as a Global Ecosphere Retreat by The Long Run. This is one of the highest sustainability standards in the world and signifies Sasaab’s ongoing commitment to making a positive impact on biodiversity and the wellbeing of communities.
  • Staying at  Solio Lodge and paying US$ 92 per adult per night (US$60 per child) Conservation Fees which supports the running of Solio Conservancy and its rhino breeding programme, therefore directly helping to protect this highly vulnerable species.
  • Giraffes are becoming highly endangered across much of Africa. Just by staying at Giraffe Manor you are contributing to the conservation of these gentle giants and US$ 10 is donated for every stay to African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) to support the conservation and breeding of endangered Rothschild’s giraffes.

safari collection sala's camp

Sala’s Camp, our Masai Mara tented camp can accommodate up to 18 guests in seven spacious tents. This includes two family suites and two secluded honeymoon tents. Sala’s Camp offers space, comfort and serene wilderness views as well as an amazing safari experience.  When Sala’s Camp first opened as a permanent Masai Mara tented camp in 2006, guests slept in traditional mobile safari tents with bucket showers. A feeling of being totally immersed in nature was a real draw. In 2016 and again in 2017, all our rooms were refurbished to incorporate contemporary touches and elegant interiors. Retaining elements of an ‘under canvas’ mobile safari feel was essential and guests still enjoy a sense of being secluded in nature.

Today, all rooms have en-suite bathrooms with hot showers, separate bathtubs, running water and flushing loos. Our electricity is solar powered with a standby generator for cloudier days. After exhilarating game drives, returning to the tranquillity of a private riverside deck and plunge pool is unbeatable. Our Masai Mara tented camp provides lots of lovely spots in which to curl up with a book, spot wildlife on the other side of the riverbank or simply contemplate the wonderful sights you’ve seen.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

safari collection sala's camp

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

safari collection sala's camp

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

safari collection sala's camp

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

safari collection sala's camp

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

safari collection sala's camp

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

safari collection sala's camp

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

safari collection sala's camp

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

safari collection sala's camp

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

safari collection sala's camp

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

safari collection sala's camp

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

safari collection sala's camp

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

safari collection sala's camp

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

safari collection sala's camp

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

safari collection sala's camp

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

safari collection sala's camp

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

safari collection sala's camp

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

safari collection sala's camp

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
