Magnolia Cemetery Charleston

Magnolia Cemetery is what Superintendent Beverly Donald calls "the best kept secret in Charleston."  To get there, you must drive outside the historic district to an area known as the Charleston Neck. Once you pass the white pillars at the entrance of Magnolia Cemetery and head down its curvy drive, you too will be silenced by the quintessentially Southern majesty of this burial ground.  "Planters, politicians, military leaders, bootleggers, whorehouse madams - you name it, anybody from the last 150 years of Charleston's history is out there," says Ted Phillips, author of the book on Magnolia, City of the Silent. Once a thriving 19th-century rice plantation, the 128-acre cemetery is what Phillips calls a "nice microcosm of Charleston history, of those who were rich and white, since 1850."

Charleston is well-known for its roots in religious diversity. One of the Holy City’s most popular attractions is its cemeteries. Dating back to 1849 and home to 23 sites, Charleston cemeteries promise a blend of historic legends and charming craftsmanship that keep visitors coming back year-round.

Tips for Visiting Charleston Cemeteries

Below are a few tips to keep in mind to make the most of your visit to Charleston cemeteries.

  • Some areas are overgrown; bring protective clothing and footwear
  • Be mindful of historic gravesites and grieving families
  • Pack a flashlight if you plan on visiting during the evening
  • Research what times the cemeteries are open to visitors

It’s also a great idea to plan a few graves, religious buildings or other notable sights that you’d like to see prior to visiting a cemetery. For the best sights and info on local legends, we highly recommend taking a walking tour of the various grounds at these cemeteries.

Charleston Cemeteries #1: Circular Congregation Church Cemetery

cemetery tour charleston sc

The Circular Congregation Church Cemetery’s artistry makes it a must-see destination. As the oldest of the Charleston cemeteries, it draws much of its beauty from its well-preserved gravestones and colonial-era workmanship.

Hand-sculpted gravestones depict both life and death in the Circular Congregation Church Cemetery. Out of all of the cemeteries in the city, this is the only one where graves are decorated with portraits of the deceased.

Named after a circular building that originally served as a meeting house between Congregationalists, Huguenots, and Presbyterians; this cemetery is filled with culturally diverse gravesites. The Circular Congregational Church is the oldest church in these cemeteries and one of the oldest in all of Charleston.

Charleston Cemeteries #3: Magnolia Cemetery

cemetery tour charleston sc

Facebook: Magnolia Cemetery

Magnolia Cemetery holds many pieces of local cultural significance. Located on a rice plantation that originally served as a Confederate encampment, this cemetery is the final resting place of a large number of South Carolina politicians and military figures — especially compared to the rest of the Charleston cemeteries.

Its militaristic roots make Magnolia Cemetery popular for ghost stories. Lieutenant George E. Dixon and Roswell S. Ripley are two popular graves to visit, as well as the Hunley Crew burial and their captain, Horace Lawson Hunley. Thousands of Confederate soldiers are buried in Magnolia Cemetery, including those who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg.

One reason why Magnolia Cemetery stands out among the Charleston cemeteries is that it was named as one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the United States. It’s spiritual art and views of the Cooper River promise a tranquil visit.

Charleston Cemeteries #4: St. Michael’s Cemetery

cemetery tour charleston sc

Widely known as being a religiously tolerant city , Charleston is home to many diverse places of worship. St. Michael’s is one of the many churches in Charleston and is the oldest religious building in the city.

The building itself was the first Anglican church to be built in South Carolina. Its notably beautiful stained glass windows, impressive Georgian architecture, and 186-foot steeple make this church a well-sought-after landmark. Inside the church, visitors can see the Governor’s Pew, which was used by both George Washington and Robert E Lee.

The St. Michael’s cemetery is an extremely well-preserved gravesite. It’s one of the few Charleston cemeteries that survived extreme conditions such as hurricanes, fires, and an earthquake. As a result, its layout and structures have been virtually unchanged for over 250 years.

Charleston Cemeteries #5: St. Philip’s West Cemetery

cemetery tour charleston sc

As far as Charleston cemeteries go, St. Phillip’s Cemetery is the site of many historic landmarks. St. Phillip’s Cemetery is home to the graves of Charles Cotesworth Pinckney and John C. Calhoun, two original signers of the US Constitution. Calhoun also served as a vice president during John Quincy Adams’s presidency.

Calhoun’s resting place was not a stationary one. He was originally buried in the east side, which was regarded as the “friendly” side of the graveyard. Later on in the 1880s, he was moved to the west side, where strangers were buried.

The Pirate House, a meeting spot for pre-revolutionary pirates, can be found at the north end of this cemetery. St. Philip’s West Cemetery’s close proximity to the Dock Street Theatre and the historic market make this a must-visit during your trip to these cemeteries.

Charleston Cemeteries #6: Unitarian Church Cemetery

cemetery tour charleston sc

Out of all of the Charleston cemeteries, the Unitarian Church Cemetery is the most popular location for ghost walks. One popular tale involves Mary Bloomfield, a Charleston woman who passed away before her husband could return home. Many visit this cemetery in hopes of finding her ghost, who is on a never-ending search for her husband.

Another bit of local lore for this Charleston Cemetery involves the famous poet Edgar Allen Poe. “Annabelle Lee,” a poem about two lovers forbidden to see each other, supposedly took place in this cemetery.

A defining characteristic of the Unitarian Church Cemetery is its heavily overgrown paths and gravesites. The untended flowers and bushes are intentional; they’re meant to symbolize life after death.

Magnolia Cemetery- Charleston’s Oldest Public Cemetery

Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, South Carolina is a scenic, historic cemetery that dates back to the mid-19th century.

With winding pathways, picturesque ponds, and elegant ironwork complementing sculpted monuments and aged headstones of prominent South Carolinians, Magnolia is a fine example of a Victorian era cemetery.

History of magnolia cemetery.

Magnolia Cemetery was opened in 1850 on the site of a former rice plantation called Magnolia Umbra.

As was common in 19th century Europe and America, the cemetery was built in a rural area and extensively landscaped to create a park-like atmosphere. These so-called garden cemeteries were also home to ornamented mausoleums, monuments, and memorials, so it was only fitting that architect Edward C. Jones included the same in his design for Magnolia Cemetery.

Initially there was some opposition to the plan for a rural cemetery near Charleston, stemming from preferences for traditional church graveyards, but in the end a company of eight stockholders was formed to establish Magnolia Cemetery.

The board set to work choosing a location and picking an architect. They also implemented rules for managing the cemetery that were copied from Mount Auburn Cemetery near Boston and Green-Wood Cemetery in New York, as they were among the first rural cemeteries founded in the United States.

When Magnolia Cemetery was complete, a dedication speech was given on November 19, 1850 by local artist Charles Fraser to officially open the 1407 plot cemetery.

Magnolia Cemetery soon became a popular spot for both recreation and interment, with several high profile people choosing it as their final resting place. As time went on the cemetery grew, but in the 20th century it fell into decline because of rising maintenance costs.

During the 1970s, under direction of a new superintendent, Magnolia Cemetery started to be revitalized to its former appearance. A few years later a nomination was put forth for Magnolia Cemetery to be included in the National Register of Historic Places, an honour that was granted in 1978.

As a designated historic district, Magnolia Cemetery retains much of its original landscape design, monuments, and sculptures even though it continues to be an operating cemetery.

Design of Magnolia Cemetery

As was typical of Victorian-era, rural cemeteries, Magnolia was designed to do double duty as both a burial ground and public park.

The cemetery was built around a small lake with looping walking paths and roads separating the land into multiple sections. There’s a mix of open spaces and areas sheltered by a variety of tree species.

Incorporated into the design are ponds, formal gardens, oak trees, and plenty of cemetery art such as urns, angel sculptures, figures of mourning women, and ornamental iron fences.

Notable Monuments in Magnolia Cemetery

Several of Magnolia Cemetery’s original monuments and structures can be seen today, including the Receiving Tomb which held the newly deceased, five mausoleums, and the superintendent’s building which used to be part of the Magnolia Umbra plantation.

The most unique and eye-catching monument at Magnolia Cemetery is the pyramid-shaped tomb of W.B. Smith. Although it may seem out of place, Egyptian symbols and architecture were often used in Victorian cemeteries.

Another example of Egyptian Revival architecture in Magnolia Cemetery is the Vanderhorst Mausoleum, a grand rectangular structure from 1856.

Initially, I had some amount of distrust ordering on line. Worried that tickets would not come through, etc. Mathematically pre calculated if TourPass could offer savings compared to purchasing admission tickets individually. TourPass certainly did! To get the most out of our day, I planned an aggressive itinerary. We even brought sandwiches for lunch, so as not to waste a minute. We were able to get in 6 standard tours and one featured! Our second featured tour on Red Boat was cancelled. TourPass promptly refunded this amount on my credit card. No hassle, no worries! We did the1 day St Augustine pass. The featured Trolley Tour was outstanding, as were standard tours The Oldest Store and Jail. If I ever get to Savanah or Charleston will definitely go with TourPass. They did a great job of covering St Augustine’s highlights. Their app was user friendly and showed proximity of nearby attractions, saving steps and time. Everything was so easy. It’s not often one has such a positive experience. TourPass offers value and demonstrated integrity. You can trust them.

Our tour pass was worth the price. It's actually a money saver. We took the tour of St Augustine and got our bearings. It also helped us select the attractions. The drivers were pleasant, very helpful, and steeped in St Augustine history. Simply wonderful!

This made our Savannah trip so much easier to plan and to see all the attractions we wanted. It saved me over $100. In three days, we were able to visit all the places we wanted plus more! I would highly recommend buying this tour pass!

My husband and I went to St. Augustine for 2 days and wanted to see as much as possible. By using TourPass we were able to see the most popular attractions at a greatly reduced price. I would definitely use TourPass in other cities!

Purchasing a Tour Pass was the best decision for us! We saw many more attractions that we would have without it! So efficient too! Pay once and go, go, go! We would highly recommend it!

I purchased the Savannah tour pass for 3 days, I did not use them consecutively, as I was on town for 8 days. I chose to do the Hop on Hop off Tour on my first day to give me an overview of Savannah, I rode the trolleys for a total of two loops, guide offered a different perspective on the city. I took a walking tour, Brad was awesome, 1.5 hrs of wonderful history. I rode the Paddle boat, was a bit disappointed the wheel doesn't function. I also visited Fort Pulaski on my last day in Savannah, it was a wonderful experience. Those were the 4 featured options I used. I also used multiple options from the normal options, my 2 favorites were the Square Pops and the Jepsen Art Center. I cannot express how awesome it was to be able to enter a venue, have it paid for, and just enjoy. I will purchase the Savannah Pass when I return next year, it was well worth it's value. Now I am hopeful the Charleston, SC Pass, that it is just as terrific, as I am visiting in the Fall.

This was awesome value for the money, we were in both places the first week in March with another couple and it made planning things to do much easier and the value was outstanding. We figure we saved about $100 per couple.

We purchased the two day St. Augustine TourPass and found the pass well worth the money, providing us with access to museums and tours we might have passed on had we had to pay full price to see without the pass. Highly recommend purchasing, especially if in the area for several days.

So easy! Tour passed saved us over $200 dollars. Just scan your phone and enjoy. Great way to visit St. Augustine.

Tour Pass made our trip so easy to navigate. Easy check in at all our locations! Saved us a lot of time.

My contact at Tour Pass for both Savannah and Charleston was a gentleman named Keith. He went above and beyond to help me in setting up the events/days and was extremely patient with a non-technologically adept mature individual like me. He helped every time I called and was always charming while doing so which reduced my stress level. He also assisted when a day change was needed and on a refund for an event. It felt like my sister and I had a friend in the area!

The events were good selections and the information provided for each was appreciated. What would have added to the info for tourists would have been info about parking availability.

Loved it and saved money. St Augustine is such a fun city. Makes planning and visiting soooo much easier. I’ve purchased Tour Pass in all of their cities now (Charleston, Savannah and now St Augustine).

5 stars all the way! So many worthwhile attractions to choose from. Don’t even need to think twice or research more. Worth all the money for however many days of your visit. Plus so easy to use. Enough said! We will definitely be back and buy the Tour Pass all over again.

I got the tour pass for my family when we visited Charleston, SC in December. It was perfect since we weren't familiar with the city and this gave us ideas and suggestions of verified and validated things to do without having to do the research myself. We will definitely get the pass again.

Having never been to Savannah before, we were curious and I asked my oldest brother who had been there. He mentioned your Tour Pass and I am so thankful he did! He was a good deal financially and we particularly enjoyed the "diamond" attractions of the horse-drawn carriage ride, paddle-wheeler guided river cruise, and "Piano Men" concert in the old theater. On top of that, we visited several historic homes, an art museum, the train museum (including train ride), maritime museum, and free popsicles to boot! The Tour Passes helped make our trip to Savannah even more enjoyable and memorable. Thanks!

Magnolia Cemetery, Great tour

If you go to Charleston, and are interested in cemeteries, check out Magnolia Cemetery. The concierge recommended a tour, and boy, was it the right way to go. You get so much more from a tour than you ever could have gotten on your own. The tour guide, Ed Macy, is fun, enthusiastic and knows a heck of a lot about Magnolia and Charleston and was able to tie together the history, architecture and stories in an amusing and informative way. The cemetery itself is beautiful and very photogenic, so it would be enjoyable anyway, but you wouldn't come away from it with as much. The tour was $20 each for a bit over an hour, and he picked us up at the hotel and drove us back after the tour. Can't recommend it highly enough.

cemetery tour charleston sc

After touring the Hunley we visited Magnolia Cemetery which is only about 3 miles away. It is an interesting experience seeing all the old graves in a very authentic southern setting. Some of the markers are very touching. Unlike one of the arlier writers it was o problem walking around the grounds.

First, I must say I don't understand why this site was given 1 star by the previous reviewer. You can get a group and go to the cemetery any time you please - you can walk around all you want and you don't need permission for groups! We went on a Saturday and had the entire cemetery almost to ourselves. There were maybe 2-3 other cars there. This is a very old cemetery and it is interesting to walk around the large cemetery and just read all the tombstones. There are many interesting masoleums, some with stained glass windows. I did notice one where the floor had caved in and I could see the empty vaults below - be very careful not to fall in and watch your step! A few of the graves had also caved in. There are many large oak trees, some with roots sticking out of the ground, so watch your step as the previous reviewer mentioned. This is the best cemetery I have visited - even nicer than Bonaventure in Savannah, GA (though this one seemed to be less maintained, possibly because the graves are older here). I would recommend to anyone who likes cemeteries!

cemetery tour charleston sc

When I went I had this place almost all to myself. Make sure you take at least an hour or more to even see the highlights. Historic graves, gorgeous memorials, very touching and peaceful. Watch out for uneven ground though!

cemetery tour charleston sc

I visited Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston on Saturday, April 17, 2004 for the burial of the final crew of the confederate submarine, H.L. Hunley. I was joined with several other thousand people enjoying the enviornment of that special day. We had lunch in the cemetery as we waited for the bodies to arrive at the burial plot. All in all, I would advise a trip to Magnolia Cemetery if you are in the Charleston area and have some extra time, the historic headstones form the 1800's are very exciting to read.

This is majestic cementery located about 1/2 mile from the East Bay and Meeting Streets convergence. A small green sign peaking above unattended plants, directs you to turn right. Immediately grave markers come into view on the right. Follow the road and take any dirt drive and slowly pass family names you have heard over the passage of time. You will recognize many of them. The grave markers are exquisite and unique. You will see markers from the 1800's mixed in with 21st century. This is one of the most interesting cementeries I have ever visited. It should be a must see when coming to Charleston. I hope you enjoy the visit as much as I did.
