What Is a Single Entry Visa?

Visas can be divided into 2 main categories : single-entry visas and multiple-entry visas .

A single-entry visa permits the bearer to cross the border and enter the country of issue just once . Many countries issue visas that allow a single entry.

Single-entry permits are often issued as online visas , via a quick application form. Using the internet to obtain visas is a growing trend due to its convenience and is quickly becoming the modern way to get most types of travel authorization.

Depending on the destination and the nationality of the traveler, they may need to take the longer route of applying for a single-entry visa from a diplomatic mission , such as an embassy .

Single-Entry Visa Meaning

A single-entry visa is a travel permit that allows the holder to enter the destination country on one single occasion .

Once the travelers has arrived in the country and cleared immigration, the visa cannot be used again .

If issued as a separate document to the individual’s passport, it is still important to keep the visa for the duration of the stay in the foreign country. This is because it proves that the visitor is authorized to be in the country.

After departing from the country , a single-entry visa ceases to be valid. If the traveler wishes to return, they must apply for a new visa.

In some cases, it might only be possible to obtain a single-entry visa to visit a country. Other destinations allow travelers to select either a single-entry or multiple-entry visa. Single-entry visas typically come at a lower price .

What Is the Difference Between a Single and a Multiple Entry Visa?

A single-entry visa allows the holder to enter the country once.

A multiple-entry visa permits the holder to enter more than once.

The exact terms of multiple-entry visas vary depending on the country of issue. In many cases, the number of entries is unlimited while the visa is still valid . This means that the holder can travel to the destination country as many times as they like until the visa expires.

In other cases, multiple-entry visas permit a specified number of visits . They may be referred to as “dual-entry visas” or “triple-entry visas”, depending on the number of trips allowed.

Some destinations issue only single-entry visas, while others only have multiple-entry visas. Others allow visitors to choose. In these cases, single-entry visas are usually more affordable .

The number of entries permitted may also vary depending on the type and purpose of the visa.

What is a Single Entry Visa?

What is a multiple entry visa, difference between single entry visa and multiple entry visas, which countries offer both single entry visa and multiple entry visa options to travelers, tips to help choose the right visa for your travel needs.

  • Single Entry Visa
  • Multiple Entry Visas

Understanding the differences between them - single entry vs multiple entry visa can help you make an informed decision that aligns with your travel needs.

A single entry visa permits you to enter a country only once during the visa's validity period. Once you exit the country, the visa is no longer valid for re-entry. This type of visa is suitable for travelers with a fixed travel itinerary or those visiting a specific destination for a single trip.

Highlights of Single Entry Visas:

  • Cost-effective for one-time trips.
  • Simpler application process with less documentation.
  • Suited for fixed itineraries and specific travel purposes.
  • Less scrutiny at borders for a smoother entry.
  • No need to plan for re-entry, simplifying travel arrangements.
  • Easier visa extensions for longer stays if needed.

A multiple entry visa allows you to enter and exit the country multiple times within the visa's validity period. This type of visa is beneficial for travelers who intend to visit multiple destinations or need to make frequent trips for business or leisure.

Highlights of Multiple Entry Visas:

  • Flexibility for frequent travel within the visa's validity period.
  • Economical for business travelers and those visiting the same country multiple times.
  • Time-saving with a single visa covering all entries.
  • Ideal for multi-country itineraries and extended stays.
  • Simplified travel planning without re-entry considerations.

Now that you are equipped with the single and multiple entry visa meaning and their difference it is now time to learn which countries offer both single and multiple entry visas to travelers.

Many countries offer both single and multiple entry visas. However, visa policies and requirements for these undergo consistent iterations over time. Here is a list of some countries that commonly offer both types of visas:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • Schengen Area countries (A group of 26 European countries that have abolished passports and other types of border control at their mutual borders)

To select the appropriate visa type, consider your travel plans carefully. Evaluate factors such as the number of countries you'll visit, the duration of your trip, and your travel frequency. If you're planning a single, one-time trip, a single entry visa may suffice.

However, if you foresee multiple entries or visits to various countries, a multiple entry visa would be more practical. Below mentioned are a few tips that could ease your decision for choosing the right visa

  • Research visa requirements for your destination countries.
  • Plan your travel itinerary and determine the number of entries required.
  • Consider the cost-effectiveness of each visa type.

Single Entry and Multiple Entry Visas

U.S. visas in the passports of non-U.S. citizens will give them permission to travel to a U.S. port of entry but do not guarantee entry into the country. Visas will be issued to foreigners by consular officers abroad after they review their applications for U.S. visas and after making sure that they are admissible into America.

Immigration authorities at the ports of entry will allow them to enter the U.S. after verifying their eligibility. Immigration officers will also stamp their passports and indicate the date on which they will need to leave the country.

The visa expiration date and the length of time they are permitted to stay in the U.S. are both different. The expiration date of the visa and the date on which it was issued can be found on the visa. Visa validity is the time period between the date on which the visa was issued and the expiration date of the visa. During that period, visa holders can travel to U.S. ports of entry.

There are two types of nonimmigrant visas being issued, single entry and multiple entry visas. Based on the nationalities of the applicants, single or multiple entry visas will be issued to them.

A single entry visa can be used by the visa holders to travel to a U.S. port of entry just one time. They can travel to the U.S. any time before the visa expiry date. Once they leave the U.S. they will not be able to travel again to the U.S. with the same visa even if it is still valid.

Multiple entry visas can be used to travel to U.S. ports of entry as many times as the visa status. The number of times the visa holders can travel to the U.S. with those particular visas will be denoted under “entries” on the visas. These visas will be valid for a certain period of time which is known as the visa validity period. During this period, the holders of these visas can travel to the U.S. multiple times for the purpose the visas were issued. However, they must not exceed the number of entries allowed on their visas.

What is the difference between a single and a multiple entry visa?

Help Centre what do you need help with?

The main difference between these two visa types is that a single entry visa allows entry to Canada for one-time only and a multiple entry visa allows entry many times .

Which type of visa to get

You don’t need to choose. A multiple entry visa is what all visa applicants are automatically considered for. We will review your application and issue you a visa depending on your situation.

Multiple entry visa

While valid, a multiple entry visa will let you travel to Canada for six months at a time as many times as you want. It will be valid for up to 10 years or one month before your passport expires, whichever is shorter. You must arrive in Canada on or before the expiry date on your visa.

Single entry visa

A single entry visa lets you travel to Canada only one time. For instance, you may only be eligible for a single entry visa if:

  • you are eligible for a fee-exemption and the purpose of your entry to Canada is limited (such as, for an official visit by a foreign national)
  • you are taking part in a one-time special event in Canada
  • there are approved country-specific procedures or guidelines in place.

In most cases, once you have left Canada, you will need a new visa to enter Canada again.

You won’t need a new visitor visa to return to Canada if you are travelling directly to the United States (including its Territories and Possessions) or St. Pierre and Miquelon.

New entry requirement now in effect

Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to or transit through Canada by air. Exceptions include U.S. citizens and travellers with a valid Canadian visa. Canadian citizens, including dual citizens , and Canadian permanent residents cannot apply for an eTA.

What is the difference between a single-entry and multiple-entry Schengen visa?

A single-entry visa and a multiple-entry visa are both Schengen visas. The difference is how often you can travel to the Netherlands or other Schengen countries and how long the visa is valid for.

How often you can travel to the Netherlands

How often you can travel to the Netherlands depends on the type of visa you have. You should therefore check whether you have a single-entry or multiple-entry visa.

If it says ‘1’ under ‘number of entries’, you have a single-entry visa. If it says ‘MULT’ under ‘number of entries’, you have a multiple-entry visa.

I have a single-entry visa

A single-entry visa allows you to travel from a country outside the Schengen area to the Netherlands or other Schengen countries 1 time.

See what countries are in the Schengen area

I have a multiple-entry visa

With a multiple-entry visa, you can travel as often as you wish from a country outside the Schengen area to the Netherlands or other Schengen countries, as long as your visa is valid.

Remember that you are not allowed to stay in the Schengen area for longer than 90 days within a 180-day period. It makes no difference whether this is 90 consecutive days in the Schengen area, or 90 days divided over 2 or more trips. See the following examples:

  • If you have been in the Schengen area for 30 days within a 180-day period you can spend a maximum of 60 more days in the Netherlands or other Schengen countries within the same 180-day period.
  • If you have been in the Schengen area for 90 days within a 180-day period you can no longer travel to the Netherlands or another Schengen country with this visa in the same 180-day period. You can however use it to enter the Schengen area again in a new 180-day period, if your visa is still valid and you first spend at least 90 days outside the Schengen area.

How long is my visa valid?

Your visa will specify the period for which it is valid (see ‘from’ ... ‘to’). The date specified under ‘from’ is the first day on which you can enter the Schengen area. You must have left the Schengen area by the date given under ‘to’.

Visas are usually valid for the duration of the trip for which they are issued.  You specify the number of days yourself when you submit the application. Although a single-entry visa can be valid for a maximum of 90 days and a multiple-entry visa for up to a maximum of 5 years, your visa may be valid for a shorter period.

What determines the period of validity for my visa?

Based on your travel plans, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs determines when, for how long and for how many journeys your visa is valid. The period of validity may be shorter than you had expected.

A multiple-entry visa is valid for 1 year in the following situation:

  • In the past 2 years, you have been issued with a Schengen visa (not an airport transit visa) 3 times.
  • You followed the rules for your visa.

A multiple-entry visa is valid for 2 years in the following situation:

  • In the past 2 years, you have been issued with a 1-year multiple-entry visa.

A multiple-entry visa is valid for 5 years in the following situation:

  • In the past 3 years, you have been issued with a 2-year multiple-entry visa.

How long can I stay in the Netherlands?

Your visa will specify how long you can stay in the Netherlands for within the period for which it is valid, under ‘duration of stay’.

If it says ‘90’, you can stay for a maximum of 90 days in the Netherlands and other countries in the Schengen area.

If you have a multiple-entry visa you can stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period.

If you have spent 90 consecutive days in the Netherlands or in another Schengen country, you must wait at least 90 days before entering the Schengen area again. It does not matter whether you have a single-entry or multiple-entry visa.

What is a single entry visa C for the Netherlands?

Who a Schengen visa for short stay is going to apply has the choice between a single-entry visa or a multiple entry visa . In this article you can read what a single-entry visa is.

A 'single entry' visa allows you to enter the Schengen area once. You may then be in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days out of 180. During these 90 days you can go to all 26 Schengen countries travel and stay there.

You usually get a single-entry Schengen visa for a certain period, which is longer than your stay in the Schengen area. You should therefore be careful not to confuse the number of days specified with the validity date indicated on the visa.

For example, a visa can be issued for 30 days but be valid from February 1 to March 15. Then you can stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 30 days within a period of one and a half months. The embassy gives a 15 day longer validity period as standard, which gives you more options when planning your trip. For example, if you travel a week later because a plane ticket is cheaper then you can also leave a week later without losing vacation days.

Single = 1 entry

With a single-entry visa, you may therefore enter the Netherlands or another Schengen country once within the validity date of the visa. You must always stick to the number of days that are on you visa sticker stands. Also remember that 90 days does not mean 3 months! The maximum of 90 days cannot be changed. You have to Schengen area off again, otherwise there will be an overstay and that can have unpleasant and far-reaching consequences.

More often to the Schengen area

If you want to travel to the Schengen area more than once in a year, it is best to apply for a multiple entry. This means that you can travel to the Schengen area several times without having to apply for a visa each time. The 1-day rule (in a period of 90 days) still applies, so you can no longer stay in the Schengen area. Every time you enter the Schengen area you must also be in possession of a Schengen insurance .

Change a single-entry visa to a multiple-entry

When you traveled to the Netherlands with  you cannot just change it to a single-entry visa a multiple entry visa. This is only possible in situations of force majeure, humanitarian reasons, serious professional reasons or personal circumstances that have changed after you traveled to the Netherlands. Before submitting the request, you must make an appointment with a  IND desk .

What’s the Difference Between a Single and Multiple Entry Visa?

Multiple Entry Visa

Whether you’re planning a quick getaway or an extended trip, it’s important to know the difference between single and multiple entry visas. Knowing the difference will help you choose the right visa and avoid any potential issues when traveling. It will also help you plan your trip better. In this article, we’ll take a look at the key differences between single and multiple entry visas.

What is a Single Entry Visa?

A single entry visa allows you to enter a country one time. Once you leave the country, you will not be able to return without getting a new visa. This type of visa is ideal for short trips and is usually valid for a period of three to six months.

If you’re planning a trip to a country that requires a visa, be sure to check the visa requirements before applying. Not all countries offer single entry visas. In some cases, you may need to apply for a multiple entry visa instead. Plus, keep in mind that a single entry visa may not be valid for the entire duration of your trip.

For example, if you’re planning to stay in a country for six months, but the visa is only valid for three months, you’ll need to leave the country and reapply for a new visa before returning.

What is a Multiple Entry Visa?

A multiple entry visa allows you to enter and exit a country multiple times. This type of visa is ideal for people planning extended trips or who need to travel frequently for business. Multiple entry visas are usually valid for one year, although some countries offer valid visas for two or five years.

Keep in mind that not all countries offer multiple entry visas. In some cases, you may need to apply for a single entry visa instead. So, be sure to check the visa requirements before applying. Moreover, if you’re planning to travel frequently between two or more countries, it might make sense to get a multiple entry visa for each of the countries. It will save you from applying for a new visa every time you travel.

What’s the Difference Between Single and Multiple Entry Visa?

The main difference between a single and multiple entry visa is how many times you’re allowed to enter the country. A single entry visa allows you to enter the country once, while a multiple entry visa allows you to enter and exit the country multiple times. Depending on your travel plans, one type of visa may be better suited than the other.

To Conclude

There you have the key difference between single and multiple entry visas. Be sure to check the visa requirements of your destination country before traveling to make sure you have the right type of visa. You may even consult with a professional passport and visa service in Roswell to ensure you have everything covered.

What is the difference between a single entry and a multiple entry visa?

You can have a Single or Multiple Entries Visa. What is the difference between a single entry and a multiple entry visa?

To find out which type you have look at the Visa stamp that was placed on your passport and look for the word “Entries” . There should be a number (“1”, “2”, etc) or a letter “M” under the word “Entries” . “M” means multiple visa, but if instead of this letter you have a number “1” that means that this is a single visa and you are only allowed to enter the U.S. one (1) time using this visa. If you have a different number like “2” that means that you are only allowed to enter the U.S. two (2) times using this visa.

Single Entry Visa

A Single Entry Visa is only valid for a one time entry in the U.S. , therefore once this visa has been used to travel to the United States , if the visitor wants to travel again to the U.S., first must re-apply for another visa at his local U.S. consulate.

single entry and a multiple entry visa

Multiple Entries Visa

The Multiple Visa Entry visa allows a person to go and come back to the U.S. on the same visa before the expiration of the visa. If the “entries” field on your visa shows “02” this means that you are allowed to enter the U.S. two (2) times with this visa. If the entries show “M” or “MULT” then you are allowed to enter the U.S. multiple times. In general, the B1/B2 visa allows you to enter the U.S. multiple times. You can enter and leave the U.S., and then enter and leave again in the future. However, re-entry is, dependent on your continued eligibility for the visa.

If you have been arrested or committed an illegal act which resulted in a warrant in your name since the time the visa was issued, you could be denied re-entry in the United States, or if you overstayed your visa then you also could be denied entry.

Re-entering the United States

During your visit to the U.S., you may visit Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean islands (except Cuba) for up to 30 days and re-enter the U.S. again, as long as you re-enter within the period noted on the Form I-94 that you received when you first entered the U.S.

If while in the U.S. you visit other countries such as France or Panama and then return to the U.S., your re-entry will be considered to be a new admission, rather than a re-entry from a contiguous country in the course of your initial visit, and the admission inspection may be more strenuous.

The Officer inspecting you will want evidence that you intend to go back home to your country of legal residence as opposed to returning again and again to the U.S. after visits to other countries.

The B1 or B2 visa allows you to come to the U.S. as a visitor, but if the immigration officer suspects that you are actually trying to live as an illegal resident in the U.S., you will be denied entry.

Single-entry Visa

A single-entry visa is a visa that permits to enter a country one time, compared to a multiple-entry visa that enables its holders to travel to a country numerous times.

Once a traveler enters a country with a single-entry visa, they activate it. A visa for single entry cannot be used more than once. If a visitor wants to return to the country, they must apply for a new visa.

A lot of countries issue single-entry visas for short-term visits. Some of them are even available electronically. An online visa can be obtained in a few steps via an intuitive application process.

Destinations that do not offer e-Visas require applicants to obtain a single-entry visa at the embassy in person.

What is a single-entry visa

A single-entry visa is an entry permit that allows a traveler to enter the country of issue on one single occasion. A visa limited to one entry cannot be used again.

The approved visa document contains the validity period and the number of permitted entries. A traveler can enter the country only during the indicated period. Electronic visas are usually digitally connected to the applicant’s passport. In such a case, if a passport expires, a visa becomes invalid and won’t give access to a country.

Depending on the country of issue and the visitor’s nationality, a single-entry visa can be obtained through an online application process, on arrival, or at the diplomatic mission. The requirements may vary, but all applicants must prepare the necessary documentation and means to cover the processing fees.

The difference between a single-entry and multiple-entry visa

Some countries issue only single-entry tourist visas, while others enable travelers to get a multiple-entry visa which allows to enter a country more than once. Some destinations allow travelers to choose between different options.

Some multiple-entry visas are issued for a certain number of entries, for example, double-entry or triple-entry visas. There are also visas with an unlimited number of entries, which one can use to enter a country as many times as they want.

A multiple-entry visa can be very advantageous, however, a single-entry visa is normally more affordable. A traveler should plan their trip beforehand, understand the visa terms, and choose the visa type according to their purpose and itinerary.

For example, choose a single-entry Schengen visa to enter one country, but consider getting a multiple-entry one if your future plans include visiting several countries in the Schengen zone.

Passengers who are able to obtain their onward boarding passes from any of the Transfer Lounges within the transit area can also remain in the transit area. All other passengers should exit the transit area as soon as possible. We wish to further highlight that most passengers who are arriving on a Low Cost Carrier (LCC) or connecting to a LCC are required to seek immigration clearance and obtain their onward boarding passes in the respective Departure Check-in Hall. Foreigners who seek immigration clearance will have to satisfy the prevailing entry requirements, which include possessing an entry visa, where applicable. All passengers are strongly advised to liaise with the relevant airlines before embarking on their journeys. For more information on flights connection and transit facilities/services, please visit the Changi Airport Group's website.

11. How do I transfer my valid visa issued on my old travel document to the new one? Answer: You can transfer your valid visa on your old travel document to the new one which you are intending to travel to Singapore with. You may approach one of the Authorised Visa Agents for assistance. Basic supporting documents required from you are:

  • Your old and new travel document (original and copy)
  • Printout of the valid visa
  • Form 14A duly completed and signed
  • Your recent passport-sized colour photograph taken within the last three months. Please see Photo Guidelines for information on photo requirements.

12. What is the difference between Multiple and Single Journey Visa? Answer: If you have been issued with a single journey visa, it only allows you to use the visa once. If you possess a Multiple Journey Visa, there is no limit on the number of times that you can use the visa so long it is within the validity period. Please note that possessing a valid visa does not guarantee entry into Singapore. Visitors have to satisfy the basic entry requirements before they can be considered for entry into Singapore.

13. What is the difference between visa and visit pass? Answer: Visitors must note that Singapore visa is not an immigration pass. It is a pre-entry permission for the holder of a valid Singapore visa to travel to, and seek entry, into Singapore. Possessing a valid visa does not guarantee entry into Singapore. Visitors who are eligible for entry will be issued with visit passes upon arrival. These visit passes determine the number of days that visitors are allowed to stay in Singapore and it is not tied to the validity of your visa.

14. How do I appeal against my visa rejection? Answer: You are able to submit the appeal within one month from the date of the visa rejection. Applicant can submit an appeal through the Authorised Visa Agent in which the application was submitted to. Please note that the processing time for appeal is generally 14 working days depending on its complexity. Each appeal is assessed and considered on its own merits.

15. I want to know the reason for my visa rejection. Answer: ICA do not disclose the reason of rejection due to confidentiality of information. We seek your understanding on this matter.

What is a Single Journey Travel Document (IMM 5565 – SJTD)?

The world of immigration is full of twists and turns. Regardless, the immigration authorities must come up with solutions for each of them. The Single Journey Travel Document (SJTD – IMM 5565B) is one of those solutions.

Who is a stateless person?

  • What is an SJTD anyway?

Are there any other uses for a Single Journey Travel Document?

Ask your immigration questions.

A stateless person is someone who is not a citizen of any country. As the UN Refugee Agency ( UNHCR ) portrayed, a stateless person is someone that no State accepts as their national. Of course, most people are nationals of at least one country by birth. This could be either because of their place of birth (e.g. Canada ) or their parents. However, some people get caught in legal loopholes and remain stateless. How could a stateless person travel from one country to another country? While some permanent solutions for this problem, a Single Journey Travel Document (IMM 5565) could temporarily resolve it.

What is an SJTD (IMM 5565) anyway?

Imagine you need to travel to Canada. On the other hand, an immigration officer agrees to issue you a TRP . However, you do not have a passport or a valid travel document. Consequently, the officer attaches the TRP counterfoil to a single-page document. IRCC calls this document IMM 5565 or, as mentioned earlier, the Single Journey Travel Document or SJTD. Of course, they also affix your photo to it and indicate a validity period. Therefore, you could travel to Canada within the validity period only.

Generally speaking, whenever you do not have a passport or travel document, an officer may use an SJTD (IMM 5565) to allow you to travel to Canada. Of course, they use it for special circumstances. For example, imagine a person who has fled their country because of their political views. They may refer to UNHCR, and ultimately IRCC resettles them to Canada . However, if the person does not hold a passport, the officer may issue a Single Journey Travel Document. Consequently, they may travel to Canada with the help of the SJTD.

If you have an immigration-related question, fill out the following form. Of course, I’ll do my best to answer general questions under the Q&A category . A general question is like the one I answered here (i.e. What is a Single Journey Travel Document (IMM 5565 – SJTD)?). However, if the question is case-specific, I’ll advise you to book a consultation session .

Unlike a single-entry visa, which lets you enter a country only once, a multiple-entry visa allows you to come and go without the need for a new visa each time. The visa will have a specific validity period—ranging from months to years—during which you can travel in and out of the destination country. Here are some key points about how they work:

  • Multiple Entries : You can enter the country multiple times as long as the visa is valid.
  • Validity Period : The length of time the visa remains active can vary.
  • Stay Limits : Each visit may have a maximum duration, often referred to as “per visit maximum stay.”

Benefits of a Multiple-Entry Visa

There are several benefits to having a multiple-entry visa:

  • Convenience : Saves time and effort needed to apply for a new visa for each visit.
  • Cost-effective : Typically less expensive over time than acquiring several single-entry visas.
  • Flexibility : Offers the freedom to travel spontaneously or adjust travel plans.

Application Form : Complete the visa application form provided by the country’s immigration authority.

Visa Interview : Depending on the destination, you might need to attend an interview at a consulate or embassy.

Different Countries, Different Rules

It’s important to remember that immigration laws and policies vary from country to country. For instance, the U.S. offers a B visa category for business and tourism that can be issued as a multiple-entry visa, allowing for flexibility for frequent travelers to the United States.

In the Schengen Area of Europe, the multiple-entry visa is popular among travelers who wish to visit several European countries on the same trip, as it allows easy cross-border movement within the Schengen Zone.

For detailed and specific information about multiple-entry visas for a particular country, travelers are advised to check the country’s official immigration or consulate website.

Traveling with a Multiple-Entry Visa

Once you have your multiple-entry visa, it’s critically important to follow the rules laid out by the issuing country. Some key rules usually include:

  • Adhering to the Per Visit Maximum Stay : Each visit has a maximum allowable duration.
  • Entry and Exit Requirements : Some countries require you to enter and exit through designated ports only.
  • Maintain Valid Travel Documentation : Keep your passport and visa valid for the entire duration.

Common Issues and Solutions

  • Lost Passports : If your passport is lost or stolen, you may need to reapply for your multiple-entry visa.
  • Overstaying : Overstaying your permitted time can lead to fines, deportation, or bans. Keep track of your allowed duration of stay.

A multiple-entry visa offers a world of convenience for those who travel often. It cuts down the bureaucratic red tape of frequent applications and provides an easy way to navigate cross-border movements. Any traveler looking at their options should consider the multiple-entry visa as a viable choice to meet their travel needs, provided they are comfortable with the visa application process and diligent with their travel documentation. Remember, though, rules and regulations change, so the final step in your planning should always be to visit official sources for the most current information.

A Family Guide to Travel Visas

Customer service representative checking family tickets at airport check-in counter

Traveling abroad can feel like an endless list of checks and balances, especially when traveling with the family.

Accommodation confirmation - check. Flight itinerary - check. Passports - check . Family - check (no Home Alone incidents!)

However, even with all of that squared away, there's another important item that we sometimes leave off the initial checklist that can be vital to have when traveling internationally: a visa.

What Is a Travel Visa?

A travel visa is a document given to you by the government of the country in which you are traveling. The visa gives travelers authorization to enter certain destinations for a specified amount of time. However, not all visas are created equally. This means that the process of obtaining a travel visa can be very different depending on the country, so it is vital to know all of the requirements before making your travel plans.

Passport visa page

Some visas are electronic, while others can be a sticker, stamp or sheet of paper placed inside one of the pages marked "Visa," in your passport. An electronic visa, or e-visa, is stored in a computer system and linked to your passport. For example, Brazil offers an e-visa option where you can apply online and upon entering the country will have your passport scanned and confirm you're eligibility to enter. Some visas, like Egypt's tourist visa, can be applied for on arrival at the airport. This type of visa is given just before passing through border patrol.

Visas also have certain specifications like transit, tourism/leisure, work or student. In terms of family travel, you'd most often be applying for a visa for tourism purposes. These visas are granted to give you and your family the opportunity to enter the country, sightsee and enjoy leisure activities. Under a tourist-classified visa, you are generally not allowed to work, live or do anything business-related. This type of visa is strictly for leisure over a short-period of time.

Understand that travel/tourist visas have variations. The amount of time (30, 60, 90 or 120 days) you can spend in a country and how many times you enter/exit on one visa depends on the country's specified regulations. In the event you would like to extend your stay beyond your visa, you can apply for an extension.

How Do I Find Out If I Need a Visa?

The US Department of State — Bureau of Consular Affairs maintains country-specific information on visa requirements . You can also check to see if you need a visa for your travels by consulting that country's consulate or embassy . These websites will give you up-to-date information on visa application requirements, where to apply, costs and any additional details you may need. You can also call or email the embassy directly if you have questions.

There are also third-party companies that keep a listing of visa requirements and can potentially even help you obtain necessary visas. However, always double-check that information to be sure it is up-to-date since requirements can and do change.

Do My Kids Need a Visa, Too?

In a word, yes. Just like children need their own passports, children traveling to countries where visas are required also need to have their own visa. In some cases, a birth certificate and a notarized consent letter is required stating that both parent/guardians grant permission for the child to obtain a visa and travel abroad.

kids with their passports

What Documents Are Needed for the Application?

Remember that because visas are all unique, there are different requirements for application in different countries. Generally, the documents needed to apply include:

  • an interview/appointment letter (with date, time and name)
  • current passport valid for a certain period of time
  • passport-sized photograph ( size depends on country's regulation)
  • proof of income and funds (not always required)
  • round-trip flight itinerary (recently, the United States may not allow its passport holders to board their initial flight without proof of a return ticket.)
  • proof of accommodations

Oftentimes, you will mail your documentation and application to the country's embassy for processing. But, some countries require in-person applications and perhaps even an interview component. So, be sure to double, even triple-check to ensure that you have all documentation required for your appointment as the requirements can vary from those listed above.

How Much Will It Cost?

Costs for visas can vary. For example, an on-arrival visa for US passport holders traveling to Egypt is $25, whereas a multiple-entry visa to Russia is $270. The costs can also vary due to processing times (normal, express or urgent), classification of entries (singular or multiple) or if you opt to go through a visa processing agency versus doing everything on your own. You can at least enjoy earning bonus points when paying visa fees.

What Happens If We Arrive Without a Visa?

In most cases, you would not be allowed board an international flight without the required visa. However, some countries, such as Kenya, Armenia and Paraguay, offer visas on arrival . You would stop to get the visa before passing through immigration. It is imperative to make sure you know beforehand the entry/exit requirements, as some countries will ban you for attempting to visit without a pre-applied visa.

How Does This Work in Practice?

Every country sets its own policies on visa requirements, so we can't step you through one common application process. But, let's take a look at what it's like to apply for a visa in two different countries — Egypt and China — so you get a feel for how the process may differ country to country.

Egypt makes it fairly easy for US citizens to visit since it offers two ways to get a visa, including an easy "visa on arrival" option. For $25 per person, the visa on arrival is good for 30 days. Alternatively, US citizens can apply for an e-visa online , prior to travel, and have the option of single entry for 30 days or a multiple entry that's valid for up to 90 days. While the e-visa option is only $15 according to the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt , most travelers will tell you that the visa on arrival option is the way to go.

girl with camel

China has been known to cause visa headaches for some Americans because the application process is more in-depth than what you may have experienced when applying for visas to other countries. There are many types of Chinese visas but the one you likely want is the "L" classification for a family vacation... meaning you are visiting strictly for tourism purposes.

You'll need to carefully fill out an application. Your passport must be signed, have at least two blank visa pages and be valid for at least six months beyond the end of your trip to China. You also need to submit photos of yourself with specific parameters as noted in the application. You'll either deliver the application to your local Chinese embassy or you can send all of that information, including your passport, to a third-party visa service for processing. (It's wise to use a trackable service like FedEx or UPS for this delivery.) Your passport will be returned with the visa placed inside. Don't be discouraged by the paperwork. Just follow the instructions and look forward to your journey.

China's Great Wall

Bottom Line

Visa requirements can change at any time, so view the above examples as more of a guideline of what might be required than what to bring on your specific trip. Many editors and writers at The Points Guy turn to Allied Passports for help with some of their more complex visas and travel documents, so that is an option if the process starts to feel overwhelming.

Types Of Visas In Singapore 1

A Singapore visa is an official document issued by the Singaporean Government that allows foreign nationals to enter, stay, and engage in various activities within the country’s borders.

It serves as legal authorization for individuals to visit Singapore for tourism, work, study , or business purposes , depending on the type of visa obtained.

A Singapore visa allows the holder to enter a Singaporean point of entry, where they will be checked by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers. The ICA decides whether the visitor meets the country’s entry requirements.

You have to apply for a Singapore visa at least 30 days before you arrive in Singapore.

But keep in mind that just because you have a Singapore visa does not mean you will be allowed to enter since the Singapore visa is just pre-entry permission.

If you meet the entry requirements, however, you will receive a Pass allowing you to enter Singapore and stay for the duration the Pass is issued.

For example, for a Singapore tourist visa, you will receive a Visit Pass, usually valid for a maximum of 30 days within 90 days.
