Carlos Alcaraz's next match: Top seed's schedule at Miami Open 2024

C arlos Alcaraz will begin his bid for the rare ‘Sunshine Double' when she steps out on court for his second-round contest at the Miami Open later this week.

The Spaniard picked up a second consecutive Indian Wells trophy after triumphing over Daniil Medvedev in the summit clash 7-6 (5), 6-1. Prior to that, he ended Jannik Sinner's 16-match win streak in the semifinals.

With a first title under his belt since Wimbledon last year, Alcaraz will now be able to play with even more freedom in Miami, where he is top seed.

With no Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal to worry about, the main opposition that the top seed faces comes from Sinner once again. Medvedev, the other big name in the draw, is notably all the way across in the bottom half of the draw.

Carlos Alcaraz's next match

Carlos Alcaraz received a bye in the opening round. The recently crowned Indian Wells champion will thus open his 2024 Miami Open campaign with a second-round encounter against either Alexander Vukic or Roberto Carballes Baena.

The first projected seed that the Spaniard may square off against is Borna Coric in the third round.

Carlos Alcaraz's schedule for MIami Open 2024

Here are the possible dates for the defending champion and second seed's matches throughout the tournament:

Friday/Saturday, March 22/23 - R2 vs Alexander Vukic (Projected)

Inaugural 2024 wbit pairings released.

carnival cruise schedule out of miami

Update (March 18, 2024):  After the 2024 WBIT bracket was released, the University of Miami notified the WBIT that it was unable to participate in the tournament.

Based on the WBIT team replacement policy, the WBIT Committee identified teams not selected as at-large teams for the original field to be designated as replacement teams. By policy, for any multi-bid conference that has a team unable to participate, the first ranked pre-identified replacement team shall be placed in the bracket in the position left vacant by the withdrawing team.

James Madison will now replace Miami and will host a first-round game against Stony Brook.

INDIANAPOLIS — Miami (FL), Villanova, Penn St., Washington St., highlight the 32-team Inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament field released by the WBIT committee today.

First round play is scheduled for Thursday, March 21, with the second round playing March 24. Quarterfinals will be held on March 28 with four teams advancing to Hinkle Fieldhouse on the campus of Butler University for the semifinals on Monday, April 1. The WBIT will conclude with the inaugural championship game on Wednesday, April 3.

First round action on campus sites features the top four seeded teams, Miami (FL), Villanova, Penn St. and Washington St. facing Stony Brook, VCU, George Mason and Lamar, respectively.

Other first round games include Missouri St. at Illinois, Arkansas at Tulsa, Georgetown at Washington, Lamar at Washington St., BYU at Santa Clara, St. John’s (NY) at Florida, Cleveland St. at Toledo, High Point at Virginia, Seton Hall at Saint Joseph’s, Hawaii at California, Belmont at Ball St., North Texas at TCU and Georgia Tech at Mississippi St.

WBIT committee seeded only the top half of the 32-team field. The remaining 16 teams were placed into the bracket by the WBIT Committee as close to their area of natural interest as possible.

“What a great opportunity for women’s college basketball with additional 32 NCAA teams having the ability extend their season with a new NCAA post season tournament,” said Barbara Burke, Former Deputy Director of Athletics, University of Iowa, and chair of the WBIT committee. “This inaugural selection process was a great experience for our committee and as a group we want to commend and thank the NCAA for this new endeavor for women’s sports. Our committee was committed to selecting the best teams to participate in this inaugural tournament, ending with the championship game at the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. Best of luck to all participating teams.”

The 2024 semifinals and championship will be played at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind.

Make sure you beat the buzzer and submit by these deadlines, by max molski • published march 20, 2024 • updated on march 20, 2024 at 11:03 am.

March Madness is underway, but there's still time to fill out a bracket.

Millions of people across the country submit brackets for the men's and women's NCAA Tournaments each year. However, the 68-team format has created questions about when exactly they are required to submit their brackets.

Both the men's and women's tournaments feature the First Four , a series of four games where teams battle for spots in the first round. There are just about two full days between the announcement of the men's bracket on Selection Sunday and the opening First Four game on the following Tuesday. There's an extra day for the women's tournament, as the First Four begins on Wednesday.

When must fans submit their brackets this year? Here's what to know:

When do March Madness brackets close 2024?

March Madness brackets need to be submitted before the first game of the first round tips off. This is also the last time for fans to create or join groups in online bracket contests.

On the men's side, the first round will begin at 12:15 p.m. ET on Thursday when No. 8 Mississippi State and No. 9 Michigan State square off. The women's side also features Michigan State in the first game of the first round, as the No. 9 Spartans will face No. 8 North Carolina at 11:30 a.m. ET on Friday.

How often do upsets happen in the first round of the NCAA Tournament?

As a rule of thumb, fans should probably give themselves a bit of time before those tipoffs to submit their brackets to ensure they go through on their given website.

Do you have to submit a March Madness bracket before the First Four starts?

While the First Four is the official start of the men's tournament, fans are not required to fill out their bracket before those games begin. Instead, sites allow users to pick the winner of a given First Four game to move on past the first round -- and it can be either team.

For example, a user can choose No. 10 Colorado/No. 10 Boise State to beat No. 7 Florida in the South Region. Whether it's Colorado or Boise State, as long as the winner of Wednesday's First Four contest beats Florida in the first round on Friday, that will count as a correct pick for the user.

Simona Halep returns from doping ban in 1st-round loss at Miami

Simona Halep says it felt really good to return to the court at the Miami Open after an 18-month doping ban. (1:10)

  • D'Arcy Maine, ESPN.com

MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA -- Simona Halep had just lost to Paula Badosa 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of the Miami Open on Tuesday, but she couldn't help but smile and flash a thumbs up to the crowd as she walked off the court.

For Halep, the day was "special" regardless of the result, as it marked the welcome conclusion of an 18-month absence from competition due to a doping ban.

The former world No. 1 and two-time major champion tested positive for roxadustat, a banned blood-booster substance, at the 2022 US Open and had not played since. Originally given a four-year suspension -- which the 32-year-old said Tuesday would have effectively ended her career -- it was reduced earlier this month to nine months after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) accepted her claim that she was not completely at fault.

As the ban was applied retroactively, Halep was immediately cleared to play, and the Miami Open granted her a wild-card entry soon after.

Halep looked strong in the opening set against Badosa, but her level dropped in the second and third sets, perhaps due to rust and long stretch away from match play. She needed treatment on her right shoulder during a medical timeout late in the second set and had 10 double faults in the match.

But Halep still seemed happy to be back as she walked into her postmatch news conference. She told reporters, "I missed this" as she sat down in her chair. She went on to say she felt a mixture of nerves, excitement and other emotions, but she expressed her gratitude to the tournament and the fans for giving her such a warm welcome.

There were several Romanian flags in the crowd at Grandstand Stadium, and "Si-mon-a" chants were heard throughout the match.

"I would rate it as a special day, honestly, considering the period I had," Halep said. "Playing so well, feeling so well on court, feeling so well outside of the court with so many people that are very nice to me and giving me the love, I would say that this day is going to stay very special for me.

"Of course, I had many results in the past, big results. But here, it's something more than tennis; it's something personal. I really love to see that people are appreciating me beside tennis and beside everything that happened."

The warm reception wasn't just limited to fans. Even Badosa said she was pleased to see Halep.

"It's very nice to have Simona back," Badosa said during her on-court interview. "Honestly, for me today, it was very mental because she was one of the players I always looked up to, and I can say she was one of my idols, so playing against her was really tough. And that's why at the beginning I started a little bit nervous.

"But she really inspires me and it's so nice to have her back."

The Spanish player understood why the crowd was cheering for Halep.

"I would cheer for her also," Badosa said.

Caroline Wozniacki , who defeated Halep in the 2018 Australian Open final, offered a different tune. Wozniacki told reporters after her 6-1, 6-4 win over Clara Burel on Tuesday that despite having a "good relationship" with Halep, she didn't think she should have received a wild card to play in the tournament.

"This is not directly at Simona, but if someone purposely cheats, if someone has tested positive for doping -- I understand why a tournament wants a big star in the tournament -- and it's not a knock on anyone, but it's my personal belief that I don't think people should be awarded wild cards afterwards." Caroline Wozniacki

"I've been very outspoken in the past how I feel about doping and all of that," Wozniacki said. "I think my view on doping is the same. I have always wanted a clean sport, fair for everybody.

"This is not directly at Simona, but if someone purposely cheats, if someone has tested positive for doping -- I understand why a tournament wants a big star in the tournament -- and it's not a knock on anyone, but it's my personal belief that I don't think people should be awarded wild cards afterwards. If you want to come back, and it's been a mistake, I understand; you should work your way up from the bottom."

During an appearance on the "Served with Andy Roddick" podcast, tournament director James Blake said it was his decision to grant Halep a wild card. He explained that one women's wild card was saved in case Halep was cleared to play.

Blake said he reached out to Halep's former coach Darren Cahill to confirm she had been training and would be ready to compete before extending the invitation.

"We all came to the same conclusion to welcome her back," Blake said.

When told about Wozniacki's comments later in the day, Halep was steadfast in her innocence.

"I didn't do anything wrong," Halep said. "I didn't cheat. I didn't dope. So, it's better if we read the decision from CAS that it was a contaminated supplement. It wasn't doping. I never had something to do with doping. I never doped, so I'm not a cheater.

"Thank you to the tournament for giving me the wild card. ... It was great to be back. Only one person being negative about me is not that important because I have hundreds of people giving me love, so I will take that."

Other first-round women's results included a 6-3, 6-3 loss by seven-time Grand Slam title winner Venus Williams , 43, against Diana Shnaider , 19.

CRUISES FROM FLORIDA

MEET THE FUNSHINE STATE

BASK IN THE FUN ON FLORIDA CRUISES

People all around the world know Florida because there are few places that do “fun and sun” with quite the flair that this place does. And for all its deserved fame as a vacation destination, the Sunshine State is equally skilled at launching great vacations to other places. So imagine leaving from Florida and cruising to convenient, nearby locations like the Caribbean, The Bahamas… while we’re on the subject, you can even cruise to Mexico from Florida! See what we’re getting at? But if you’re cruising from Florida, 2024 or beyond, make sure to set aside some time to explore what’s good on land.

  • Jacksonville

Port Canaveral

Cruise from spots across florida.

With some of the best cruises from Florida, The Magic City is definitely a top homeport pick! But it’s more than Miami’s proximity to the Caribbean and Bahamas — this is simply a unique destination all its own. There are so many sides to Miami, and you can spend time exploring the city’s varied neighborhoods before or after you cruise. There’s party-ready South Beach, Coral Gables with its Mediterranean style, the spicy Little Havana, and even world-renowned Wynwood — center of street art.

What does it mean to be in the center of everything? When it comes to exploring Florida fun before or after a cruise, if you’re thinking Port Canaveral… you’re right on the mark! For starters, your cruise kicks off on the state’s iconic Space Coast, home to Kennedy Space Center and within reach of the Orlando area’s fun-packed theme parks. This all makes this a great place to launch yours! But Port Canaveral has natural thrills too: an entire coastline of sugary-sand beaches and protected islands for native wildlife.

Tampa’s the kind of place that rewards visitors who take a little time to explore the city before or after they cruise. Try it and you’ll see! Not far from the Gulf Coast you’ll find great shopping, the state aquarium and plenty of local art museums. But that’s before we even get around to talking about the historically Cuban district of Ybor City, with its lively 7th Avenue neighborhood that’s best explored after sundown for Latin-style nightlife.

JACKSONVILLE

Jacksonville is said to be the best of both worlds, with beachfront and urban vistas to explore. But make sure to add a third kind of scenery — a Carnival cruise — to your visit! Before or after you cruise you can enjoy the dining and shopping energy of Jacksonville’s downtown, but know that nature is nearby with the Southbank Riverwalk of the St. Johns River. And if you want to go full-on nature, you’ve got wildlife parks galore and miles of sandy beaches.
