Albania may be a little country but there is a lot to see and do in this exciting up-and-coming location. Bordering Macedonia, Greece, Kosovo and Montenegro, Albania’s long coastline is one of the most ruggedly beautiful in the world.

While Albania is slowly becoming more popular with tourists it remains extremely undiscovered, as well as almost completely unspoiled. Albania boasts some of the best examples of Ottoman architecture in the world, along with supremely clear Mediterranean air and stunningly fabulous beaches.

And, perhaps best of all, travelling to Albania remains an extremely affordable trip, even compared to much of the rest of this part of Europe. Let’s have a look the best places to visit in Albania !

1. Albanian Riviera

The Albanian Riviera is perhaps the most popular place in the country for tourists to visit. The riviera has a growing reputation as an important music location, with many international music festivals – including Turtle Fest and Soundwave Albania – having taken place here.

Nightclubs such as Folie Marine in Jale beach and Havana Beach Club near Dhermi draw young people from across Europe to the Albanian Riviera.

The seaside town of Himara is one of the riviera’s best places to visit, while Porto Palermo Beach, Llamani Beach and Filikuri Beach are some of the area’s finest sandy stretches, while Drymades Beach is one of the liveliest spots here.

The capital city of Albania, Tirana will be the starting point for many people exploring the best places in Albania.

The city is home to few must-see tourist locations, but the 18th-century Et’hem Bey mosque is well worth a visit.

Tirana’s people, like the vast majority of Albanian locals, are exceptionally friendly and the city is supremely affordable, with surprisingly excellent food and drinks both very cheap.

Skanderbeg Square is one of Tirana’s most important places and this is where the National Historical Museum can be found too.

At the heart of Skanderbeg Square – and therefore the heart of Tirana – is a statue of the historic Albanian national hero Skanderbeg.

3. Llogara Pass

The Llogara Pass is one of Albania’s most famous places, with the road providing one of the most spectacular drives in the whole world.

Located in the middle of the Llogara National Park, the road travels to over 1,000 metres above sea level and the scenery will take your breath away.

At the top of the pass there is a good range of restaurants, which are ideal places to enjoy some of the most stunning sights in Albania.

Llogara National Park itself is home to animals such as the golden eagle, European wildcat and fallow deer.

A drive from  Tirana to Saranda taking in the Llogara Pass should take a few hours, but allow plenty of extra time to stop and take lots of photographs.

Berat is in the middle of Albania and it is believed to be one of the country’s oldest towns. Berat is often known by its nickname – the City of a Thousand Windows – due to its mix of Ottoman and Albanian architecture.

Berat’s main tourist site is the 140th century castle, Kalaja, which is still home to hundreds of people. Formerly among the most important Albanian cities of the Ottoman Empire, Berat was added to the list of Unesco World Heritage sites in 2008.

The Church of St. Mary of Blachernae is a must-see sight for anyone visiting Berat, as is the Mangalem Quarter.

Saranda is one of the hottest tourism locations in Albania, with the town having undergone a huge amount of development in the last 20 years or so.

Saranda is home to some of the most unforgettable beaches in Albania, while the Unesco World Heritage site at Butrint is located just outside of Saranda and is well worth a visit too.

Lekursi Castle is one of the best places to go in Saranda, with people flocking here to enjoy stunning sunsets. Saranda is located a short trip across the Ionian Sea from the popular Greek island of Corfu.

6. Gjirokastra

A Unesco city, Gjirokastra is without a doubt one of the best places to visit in Albania. Unique Ottoman period architecture – with houses designed like small castles – can be found all over Gjirokastra, which has a military museum and art gallery in its amazing castle that dominates the skyline.

A folklore festival also takes place in Gjirokastra’s castle every five years – the last one was in 2015. Visiting the old Ottoman bazaar in Gjirokastra should be on the agenda for anyone visiting this part of the country.

Gjirokastra is famous as the birthplace of world-renowned author Ismail Kadare and Albania’s former dictator Enver Hoxha – today their old homes are museums.

Located a short trip away from the capital Tirana, Kruja is a must-visit spot for anyone heading to Albania for the first time.

Kruja is home to the national ethnographic museum, but it is best known for being where the Skanderbeg museum can be found. Located in the Kruja castle, the museum is one of Albania’s most important and popular tourist attractions.

It was from this fortress that Albania’s hero – George Kastrioti Skanderbeg – defended the country from Ottoman invasion over a period spanning three decades.

The castle also offers staggering views of the Adriatic Sea. The national park Qafe Shtama and the tomb of Sari Saltik are also located close to Kruja.

Away from Albania’s biggest cities, in the north of the country, is Theth. Located high in the Albanian Alps, Theth is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and it is easy to see why.

Theth National Park is perhaps the most beautiful place in all of Albania, with its Grunas Waterfall and the Lock-in Tower both extremely popular with visitors.

The mountain peaks of Thethi, Boga, Razma and Vermoshi provide an unforgettable experience of Albania in its most natural state.

Hikers and nature lovers will find Theth to be one of the best places to visit during a trip to Albania.

9. Ksamil Islands

The highlight of the Albanian Riviera is perhaps the Ksamil Islands, a remote group of three small islands located just off the coast, accessible only by boat from the small town of Ksamil.

Part of the larger Butrint National Park, the Ksamil Islands are a fantastic example of Albania at its most untouched and unspoiled.

Visiting the Blue Eye Spring is also a must for anyone who wants to experience what Ksamil has to offer during their magical Albanian break. July and August are the busiest time of year for the Ksamil Islands, but even then there are few tourists around here.

10. Shkodra

The largest town in the north of Albania, Shkodra is often considered the cultural capital of the country.

This is because it hosts events such as Carnival, Lake Day, the Children’s Festival and Shkodra Jazz Fest, while it is also home to a famous historic castle notable for its important role during the First Balkan War.

Shkodra has a simply gorgeous lake, while the medieval citadel of Drisht is only a few miles away. The famous Migjeni theatre is in Shkodra as well, along with an ace market that is well worth visiting. Shkodra’s Malazeze cuisine is perhaps Albania’s best too.

In the south-west of Albania is the popular coastal resort of Vlore , which has long been best known for its olive production – it is believed to house some 280,000 olive trees.

Vlore has many important historic sights, but perhaps the most famous of them is the Albanian Independence Proclamation Building, which is where Albania declared independence a little over 100 years ago.

Today, there is a monument dedicated to this defining moment in Albania’s history. The area of Cold Water in Vlore is popular with younger tourists due to its choice of hip bars and restaurants.

12. Apollonia

Apollonia was once one of the most important cities in the world, and as such it is a must for anyone visiting Albania for the first time.

Found in the heart of Albania, within easy reach from the city of Fier, Apollonia’s ruins are breathtaking and the views from this part of the country are superb too.

Once upon a time, Apollonia was listed among the dominions of Pyrrhus of Epirus. Those days are long gone, but Apollonia should still be on the itinerary for anyone who wants to learn more about Albania’s rich history up close.

Albania’s main port, Durres is also one of the nation’s oldest cities. Durres is most famous for being home to the biggest amphitheater in the Balkans, while the unspoiled northern coastal stretch of Lalzit Bay is one of Albania’s most beautiful places to visit.

Tourists should consider taking time out of their schedules to visit the Durres Archaeological Museum, the Aleksander Moisiu Theatre and the Royal Villa of Durres during their time in the second largest city in Albania.

Many cultural events and feastings are held in Durres throughout the year, while the city is also the birthplace of Bujar Nishani, the current President of Albania.

14. Lake Koman

For the most breathtaking scenery in the entire Balkans, visiting Lake Koman in Albania should be on anyone’s bucket list. Often described as one of the world’s great boat trips, the journey takes visitors from the hydro-electric dam at Koman to the port of Fierza.

While the locals that use the boat regularly may now take the rugged beauty of the Albanian mountains for granted, any first-time visitor will find the sights from the Lake Koman Ferry to be truly jaw-dropping. The trip on the ferry is also a great opportunity to see what life is like for many Albanians in remote areas.

15. Pogradec

One of the most up-and-coming places to visit in Albania is Pogradec, which can be found on the shores of Lake Ohrid in the east of the nation.

Lake Ohrid is the deepest lake in the Balkan region and while the Macedonian side of the lake is more popular, Albania’s shore is definitely on the up.

Pogradec is famous for its rich folklore, while its Puppet Theater Festival is one of the most interesting events on Albania’s tourism calendar.

The stunning Shebenik-Jabllanice National Park is around 30-45 minutes away from Pogradec as well, while the springs of Drilon are also close.

Once the capital of Albania, Durres is located not far from Tirana on the country’s coastline. It is a very popular destination, which means that it can get a bit crowded during the summer.

With one of the largest ports in the Adriatic, the city is a bit stuffy and over-developed, although there is a nice stretch of beach for visitors and locals alike to enjoy. Along the seafront, there are lots of restaurants selling delicious fresh seafood.

Fought over for millennia by the Bulgarians, Greeks, Venetians, and Ottomans, among others, its wealth of historic sites entices just as many people as its beaches. The spectacular Roman amphitheater and fantastic archaeological museum are the undoubted highlights.

8. Sarande [SEE MAP]

With its stunning location on the Ionian Sea, Sarande is blessed with year-round warm weather, sparkling waters, and a relaxed way of life.

While the seafront is a bit over-developed with its line of identity-less apartment blocks, there are lots of nice parts of Sarande to walk around, and loads of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops on offer.

In addition to the ancient ruins found in town, Sarande’s surroundings are full of historic sites and natural beauty, making it a great place to use as a base to explore the region.

7. Shkodra [SEE MAP]

Lying just a stone’s throw away from huge Lake Skadar that straddles the Montenegro-Albania border, Shkodra is a very pretty city to visit. The Buna River runs through town and the Albanian Alps can be seen off in the distance.

The undoubted highlight is Rozafa Castle. Over the course of its history, it has been ruled by the Illyrians, Venetians, and Ottomans, to name a few. The magnificent ramparts and ruins of the castle are fun to explore, and the views over Shkodra are breathtaking.

Although the center of the city has recently undergone extensive renovations, there are still plenty of lovely old buildings and historic sites to be found, such as the Ebu Beker Mosque and Orthodox Cathedral. The Historical Museum showcases just some of the region’s rich history and heritage.

With so much beautiful countryside surrounding Shkodra for visitors to explore, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

6. Berat [SEE MAP]

Widely regarded as one of the prettiest cities in the whole of the Balkans, Berat is known as ‘the Town of a Thousand Windows,’ as so many windows peer out at you from the front of its hillside buildings which are so tightly clustered together.

Located on a hillside, there are a number of Ottoman-era mosques and Byzantine churches scattered about town. One of the best views of Berat is from across the banks of the Osumi River which runs through it.

While simply wandering around Berat is a lovely way to spend the time, the town also has a great 13th-century hilltop castle, which is worth visiting for the outstanding views. There are also two interesting museums with some fascinating local costumes and artifacts on display and some splendid 16th-century icons.

5. Himare [SEE MAP]

With its beautiful setting on the Albanian Riviera, Himare’s sparkling turquoise waters and spectacular hilly coastline make it a great place to head if you’re after some sun, sea, and sand.

While its beaches and peaceful seaside promenade are what most people come for, the historic old town is lovely to wander around; its atmospheric tavernas are full of Mediterranean charm and delicious local seafood.

Perched atop a hill overlooking the old town is a delightful castle, which offers wonderful views over the sea. The nearby mountains also have some lovely trails and viewpoints for visitors to enjoy, while the surrounding countryside is home to spectacular churches and monasteries, such as the Monastery of the Cross and Athaliotissa.

4. Gjirokaster [SEE MAP]

Located in the south of the country, Gjirokaster is a delight to visit. Its beautiful old town is perched on the side of a hill overlooking a valley and its winding cobbled streets are full of quaint buildings and historic sites.

With over 500 homes and buildings protected and preserved as ‘cultural monuments’, Gjirokaster is full of wonderful architecture. It is often known as the ‘City of Stone’ due to the distinctive local rooves that can be seen everywhere you go.

Perched above the scenic Old Bazaar is Gjirokaster Castle, reputed to be the second largest in the whole of the Balkans. A fascinating place to visit, the castle has an underground Cold War-era bunker and an Armaments Museum for visitors to enjoy, alongside its impressive fortifications and ruins.

3. Kruje [SEE MAP]

Lying just to the north of Tirana, Kruje – or Kruja, as it is known in English – is famous for being the home city of Albania’s national hero Gjergj Skanderbeg. In the 15th century, Gjergj managed to hold out against the Ottomans for 25 years from his base in Kruje.

Known as the ‘Adriatic Balcony’ by locals, the craggy mountain that looks over the city is home to the majestic Kruje Castle, which was once Skanderbeg’s base. Nowadays, there is an interesting museum about the hero as well as a fantastic 15th-century church located within its walls. The panoramic views from the castle are simply spectacular.

The Old Bazaar in the center of town is just as fascinating to walk around. Nestled away amongst its atmospheric streets you’ll find some delightful little cafes and restaurants, alongside the plethora of shops selling anything from souvenirs and artisan goods to antiques and leather products.

A picturesque and peaceful place, Kruje is well worth visiting for its historic sites and beautiful natural setting. The surrounding area is equally enchanting to explore, with its lakes, canyons, and mountains.

2. Butrint National Park [SEE MAP]

Home to a number of diverse ecosystems and stunning archaeological sites, Butrint National Park is a popular tourist destination, in large part due to its proximity to the Greek island of Corfu . Many people come to see its majestic blend of history and nature.

Covering a peninsula that is bordered by the huge Lake Butrint on one side and the Vivari Channel on the other, the natural beauty is magnificent; over 1,200 different types of animals and plants reside amongst its scenic wetlands, hills, and islands.

The main attraction, however, is the amazing archaeological site which covers over 2,500 years of history; this includes ancient city walls, remnants of a Roman theater, a Byzantine Basilica and two castles. Wandering around the ruins with the beautiful scenery all around you is a delightful experience. This is undoubtedly one of the hidden gems of what Albania has to offer.

Once full of grey, unwelcoming communist buildings, Tirana has transformed considerably since the early 90s. Albania’s capital is now a fun, friendly and festive place to visit.

Full of life, the now brightly colored pedestrian streets showcase some delightful Ottoman-era buildings and Italian architecture that highlights the country’s rich past. There are a number of great museums and art galleries worth checking out. Of particular interest is BUNK’ART, which was once a huge government bunker but now hosts art installations.

While it can be slightly chaotic in the traffic-filled center of town, the scenic Mount Dajti is just a short cable car ride away. With fantastic views of the city below and resplendent nature all around, it’s a lovely place to spend an afternoon.

With endless bars, cafes, and restaurants to be found around the trendy Blloku area, Tirana has a lively nightlife scene. Visitors to this under-visited capital invariably come away impressed at all that the city has to offer.

Where to go in Albania

1.  Tirana

The capital of Albania, and the only place that genuinely feels like a city, Tirana isn’t overwhelmed by its recent repressive history. Instead of hiding away the Communist-era interrogation centres and prisons, city authorities have transformed them into darkly fascinating museums, art galleries and memorials – and then surrounded them with an ever-changing cast of hipster bars and restaurants. At weekends, ride the cable car up Mount Dajti to join the locals for a spit-roast lamb lunch with a view down over the city.

2.  Berat

Beautiful Berat is a town of two halves. Down on the river bank houses are clustered up tight against the side of a forested hill, their windows bouncing sunlight off the water. Take the steep climb up towards the summit of that hill though and you’ll arrive at Berat’s other – and much older – half. A restored medieval gateway leads into the Kalaja, or fortress, where wildflowers sprout from crumbling walls and a clutch of centuries-old churches and mosques have been turned into museums.

3.  Ksamil

Albania’s quintessential beach spot. Although far from undiscovered, Ksamil – which sweeps around a series of low, wooded headlands and encompasses a number of still glistening bays, beaches and small islets – is something special. Mass tourism, fuelled by visitors from neighbouring landlocked countries, has dramatically changed the Albanian coastline in recent years, but Ksamil retains the laidback magic that first attracted people to the Albanian Riviera. And, of course, the seafood is excellent.

4.  Gjirokastër

The story of the small hill town of  Gjirokastër , in southern Albania, stretches back at least 2,500 years – with some of the treasures from this great antiquity carefully laid out in the town’s small museum. Most people today though come here to see the 600 or so stunning Ottoman-era manor houses that dot the town and surrounding hillside, some of which are open to visitors. The pretty-but-touristy centre of town ( Gjirokastër is a favourite with bus tours on a day trip from Corfu) is all cobbled streets, arty cafes and less arty souvenir shops.

5.  Butrint

Arguably the most impressive historical site in Albania, Butrint is an ancient Greek city of sunflower-yellow stones and rocks. Some of the ruins here – the theatre, Forum and public baths in particular – are extraordinarily well preserved, but just as much pleasure is to be had poking about the lesser-known ruins. To add to the wonder of the site, the whole complex is beautifully situated under shady woodland and on the shores of a quiet coastal lagoon.

6.  Shkodër

The large town of Shkodër, which lazes on the side of a lake a short way back from the sea, doesn’t make it onto many Albanian itineraries. Yet, with its pastel-painted buildings and elegant squares, it has a distinctly Italian ambiance. Add to this an abundance of history and culture and you have yourself a perfect city break. The city boasts some of Albania’s best museums (such as the Marubi National Photography Museum, which covers the history of photography in Albania, and the Site of Witness and Memory Museum, which outlines Albania’s recent Communist past), a large fortress complex, some excellent restaurants – and yes, the Italian influence extends to dinner – and long, sandy beaches just a short drive away.

7.  The Albanian Alps

The Albanian Alps, otherwise known as the Accursed Mountains, are anything but cursed. The valleys of these soaring mountains are filled with meadows, pastures and lakes in vivid greens, while beautiful, traditional stone villages dot the region. The slopes, which are thickly forested and turn a fiery red and orange in autumn, lead to summits that are licked in ice and snow for months on end. Its fabulous hiking country and numerous day and multi-day trails snake around the slopes, the most celebrated being the three-nation Peaks of the Balkans Trail, which traverses neighbouring countries Kosovo and Montenegro.

8.  Apollonia

Far from anywhere, and little known to most foreign visitors to Albania, the ruins of the ancient Illyrian city of Apollonia are a huge 2,500-year-old complex of half-buried walls, mosaics and pillars, spread across olive tree-dotted hills. The theatre and the administrative centre still retain great grandeur, and the treasure-stuffed museum is well worth a visit. Away from the main ruins, one of Apollonia’s biggest draws is its feeling of quiet solitude. Come for the history, stay for the tranquility.

9.  Gjipe beach

The forty-five-minute cliffside walking trail to Albania’s Gjipe beach starts from beside the thick stone walls of the Saint Theodore Monastery. T he religious start is appropriate: as soon as you set eyes on this small, white-pebble beach, set below cliffs at the mouth of a wooded gorge, you’ll think you’re in Mediterranean beach heaven. The atmosphere at Gjipe remains low-key and development mercifully limited. There’s a seasonal beach café and, a short way up into the gorge, a basic camping area. Come in June or September and you might have it all to yourself.

The Land of Eagles , Albania, offers a variety of activities and things to do. It has so many beautiful places. Whether you’re a  history and culture lover  or like  gastronomy and food  and  traditions  of the country, you’ll find something for yourself.

I explored Albania for almost 2 weeks and visited all the places listed below. I was amazed by its beauty daily from the north to the central part and the south. It’s such a breathtaking country.

In this article, I’ve compiled a list of the 21 most beautiful places in Albania I highly recommend you visit, so you can have an equally amazing experience.

1. Gjirokaster

The beautiful  stone city  with houses from the Ottoman era is a great spot to visit, even as a  day trip from Saranda . Gjirokaster makes you feel like you’re in a fairy tale. It’s my favorite city in Albania.

Stroll through its tiny streets with  shops selling traditional and hand-made things  such as carpets, pillows, mugs, and others. After, walk up to the  castle  and enjoy stunning views of the valley and the city from above.

Ksamil is, for some, the best place in Albania for holiday and the most popular beach paradise. It’s also known as the  Turquoise Pearl of Albania . It has crystal-clear beaches, and many people come here for the summer holidays.

However, it gets very crowded in the summer (July and August). So, if you want to escape the crowds, check out these amazing beaches on the Albanian Riviera :

Theth is one of the most popular places in the  Albanian Alps . If you want to disconnect and spend some time in nature, getting to know  traditional Albanian villages  and experiencing the peaceful lifestyle of locals, it’s the best to be.

You can stay in one of the  traditional huts  and enjoy delicious local food. Have a  traditional Albanian breakfast  with local bread, homemade fig marmalade, and butter in the morning. From Theth, you can make daily excursions to the  Grunas Waterfall or the Blue Eye .

4. Lake Komani

Lake Komani is one of the most visited places in Northern Albania. If you don’t have time to visit the Albanian Alps, you can at least make it to this lake and cross it on the ferry, which will take you to the famous Valbona Valley . 

For a moment, you might think you came to New Zealand and its fjords as the limestone mountains fall directly to the crystal-clear lake .

The ferry only leaves once a day from each place  (Koman and Fierze) . For the departure times, please refer to the  Komani Lake  website.

5. Zvernec Island

Zvernec Island is one of the highlights of Albania. This tiny island is located in the  Narta lagoon  and is only connected to the mainland with a small bridge. When you cross it, you’ll see the Byzantine  Monastery of St. Mary  with its cemetery.

Zvernec Island is also a perfect  day trip from Tirana . You can visit it together with the city of Vlore and its stunning beaches.

I highly recommend renting a bike in Vlore and riding to the island . It’s an unforgettable experience. You might even spot some pelicans on the way.

Berat is also known as the  city of thousands of windows . The legend describes two brothers, Tomorr and Shpirag , who fell in love with a local girl named Osum . However, the brothers didn’t know about each other’s love for Osum.

When Tomorr discovers that his brother is also meeting her, he asks him to stop it. But Shpirag refused to do so.

Therefore, a  fight between the two brothers  started, during which both of them died. When Osum heard the news, she cried so long that her  tears were turned into a river .

The two mountains between which Berat is built are named after the two brothers, and the  River Osum  flows through the city.

Stroll through its tiny streets, enjoy its peaceful atmosphere, and chat with locals.

Kruje is  the former capital of Albania , which already says a lot about its importance. It’s also where  Skanderbeg , an Albanian national hero, fought against the Ottomans, stopping them from spreading further to central and western Europe.

Learn more about its history inside the museum in  Kruje Castle . Walk through Kruje’s  Old Bazaar  with traditional things. It’s a great place to buy some souvenirs.

Stay in one of the  traditional hotels  and enjoy  Albanian culture .

8. Albanian Canyon

I’m not sure this place is officially named this way. Still, after seeing it, I refer to the valley as Albanian Canyon. It’s one of the most spectacular places in Albania, stretching between Korce and Permet .

There are only a few villages on the way and other than that, you’ll only enjoy the stunning views of the river passing through the valley and the mountains arising from it.

So stop on the way and take photos . It’s truly incredible.

9. Dhermi & Himare

Dhermi and Himare have some of Albania’s most popular beaches and beach resorts . If you’re only looking for a beach holiday and  relaxation in an all-inclusive resort , visit one of these places.

10. Elbasan

Elbasan is one of the biggest cities in Albania. But I want to draw your attention to spots around it. You can visit the Funari Lake (Liqenet e Funarit) with its beautiful nature, or make it to the Holta’s Canyon .

This place is especially fitted for adventurous souls who want to experience adrenaline in its gorge , small waterfalls , and crystal-clear waters .

11. Valbona

Valbona town is another beloved spot in the Albanian Alps with its famous  Valbona hike . You can start this hike in Shkodra , and it’ll take around 2 to 3 days to complete.

On the first day, you’ll cross the spectacular  Lake Komani on a ferry  before reaching Valbona. The next day, you’ll cross the Valbona Pass before descending to Theth.

It’s the best 2-day hike in the Albanian Alps and the perfect adventure for everyone who loves trekking in the wilderness.

12. Shkodra

Shkodra is one of the most important cities in Northern Albania. It’s also the departure point to the Albanian Alps .

What you can’t miss in this city is the  Rozafa Castle , which has a unique legend about the Rozafa woman who sacrificed her life for the castle.

In the evening, go to the old town of Shkodra, see the local  mosque , and enjoy its atmosphere.

I highly recommend staying overnight in  Hotel Tradita , which has a beautiful garden and rooms built in a traditional style . You’ll also experience a traditional Albanian dinner with live music in the background.

13. Lake Shkodra

When you’re visiting Shkodra, make some time to check out the nearby lake.

Lake Shkodra creates a natural border between Albania and Montenegro. It’s another great place to relax and disconnect in nature . Besides, many people skip it, so it’s less crowded .

You can spend a great day on the shores of the lake, relax, go kayaking , or rent a bike and ride around for a while. Would you make it to the Montenegrin border on the bike?

14. Mrizi i Zanave Agro Farm

Finally, I have something special for all the foodies , gastronomy, and agrotourism lovers.

Mrizi I Zanave is  one of the best agro farms not only in  Albania, but the entire Balkan peninsula. You should spend at least  1 night in its traditional rooms  and see the cellars, where they prepare  homemade products  such as cheese, raki, wine, dried tomatoes, and smoked meat.

They produce almost everything you could imagine, and the food is incredibly delicious .

The capital of Albania, Tirana, offers you a great insight into the country’s history. It’s the perfect spot to  start your Albanian itinerary . You’ll learn about the former communist regime, which affected Albania in various ways inside the  Bunk’ Art .

Tirana also has great nightlife. Go to the  Blloku district  and enjoy an Albanian dinner with the first tasting of Raki (Albanian fruit brandy).

16. Cape of Rodon

Only a few kilometers from Tirana stands the famous Cape of Rodon with its castle and the  Church of St. Anthony . This strip of land extending into the Adriatic Sea is truly spectacular.

You can walk through, visit its castle, and enjoy the beautiful virgin beaches in summer. The  castle  was built in the 1400s for a quick stop to avoid  Ottoman invaders . Enjoy its stunning views and make a trip full of  history, culture, and beach .

17. Saranda

Saranda is Albania’s second most visited city , mainly thanks to its  great international connections . You can take a ferry daily between  Saranda and Corfu Island in Greece .

You can visit the  Lekursi Castle  on the hill behind the city, where you’ll get the city’s best views and see the sea. Then just walk on the seaside promenade, enjoy the weather, and have a nice  Greek Iced Cappucino .

18. Butrint National Park

Butrint National Park hosts  the largest archaeological site  in the country. You can get there easily from Saranda or Ksamil , even by taking a  local bus .

Explore the ancient theatre with its castle and the stunning views of the park with the sea. Can you spot Corfu Island from its castle?

Another thing that draws my attention at the park’s entrance is the unique wooden log on which locals transport vehicles – don’t miss out on it. It’s super funny.

Permet is famous for its  natural thermal baths , 8 km/5 miles from the town. Locals say that each pot has different  benefits for the human body . So, come and experience it yourself.

You can walk on the  Katiu Bridge  and take great photos of the baths.

The Permet town is a  traditional Albanian place  where time stops momentarily. See how locals live, chat with them, and enjoy the slow-paced lifestyle. It’s also nicknamed the ‘City of Roses,’ thanks to the beautiful rose flowers that decorate its streets. It has a charm.

Korce is also named  the cultural capital of Albania . No wonder it has this unique vibe to meet and see locals enjoying evenings in the  Old Bazaar with live music .

Visit the  Resurrection of Christ Cathedral , walk through the  Old Bazaar , and get traditional products such as  Raki, Morava Honey, or Gliko .

Visit  Café-Musem Komiteti  to taste different types of Raki or go for a beer tasting in the local brewery .

21. Llogara Pass

If you love road-tripping and stunning views , like me, you can’t miss driving through the famous Llogara Pass. Imagine driving from the inland, surrounded by mountains and trees, and all of a sudden, you come to the point where the breathtaking Adriatic Sea spreads out in front of you .

This is how driving through the Llogara Pass feels like. It’s one of the best things to do in Albania . Enjoy the curvy roads with the best views of the entire Albanian Riviera . The scenery is like in a movie ; you must drive through on your road trip.

Probably because of its undiscovered nature, Albania is also one of the most budget-friendly European destinations . Here's our pick of the best things to do in Albania.

Albania ’s capital used to regularly top lists for Europe's worst city. Decades of Stalinist rule left Tirana grey and grim, lacking in both infrastructure and services. Today Tirana is – while still often chaotic – a very pleasant little city with enough interesting things to do .

The Et'hem Bey Mosque in Tirana is one of the few mosques to have escaped destruction by the Communists, which had resulted in any kind of religious institution being either closed, demolished or converted into warehouses or schools by the end of 1967. The clock tower is a symbol of the municipality of Tirana and, in an ensemble with the Et'hem Bey Mosque, is a unique architectural landmark.

Visiting Skanderbeg Square , named after the national hero who briefly ensured Albania was independent of the Ottoman Empire in the fifteenth century, is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Albania.

If you are wondering what to do in Tirana away from the city centre, head to Mount Dajti National Park, popular with Tirana's residents for fresh air and countryside walks. You can either take an Austrian-built cable car (expensive) or the city bus (cheap) and once there you’ll find hotels, guest houses and restaurants if you feel like staying overnight.

There are few better places to be in Albania than standing on the footbridge in the charming, easy-going town of Berat. From this vantage point, you’ll be surrounded by huddles of Ottoman houses, their dark, rectangular windows staring from whitewashed walls like a thousand eyes.

On the south bank is the sleepy Gorica district, kept in shadow for much of the day by a muscular backdrop of rock. To the north is the relatively sun-drenched Mangalemi district, from which steep, cobblestoned paths lead up to the hill-top Kalasa, an old citadel whose wonderful interior is up there with the best old towns in the Balkans.

Albania has some wonderful stretches of beach along its Ionian shore - and there is still a good chance you'll have the beach to yourself . With its jumble of rugged mountains fringed by pristine curls of beach, Albania’s south is the most appealing part of the country.

Heading on down the Ionian Coast, you’ll find one of Europe’s few unspoilt sections of Mediterranean shore, a near-permanently sunny spot where the twin blues of sea and sky are ripped asunder by a ribbon of grey mountains. On a clear day, you’ll be able to see Italy from the 1027m-high Llogaraja Pass. Both routes converge at the beach town of Saranda, while further south is the fantastic ruins of Butrint.

Sitting proudly above the sparsely inhabited Drinos valley, Gjirokastra is one of Albania’s most attractive towns and home to some of its friendliest people. It was once an important Ottoman trading hub and today a sprinkling of nineteenth-century Ottoman-style houses line the maze of steep, cobbled streets. On the way between Gjirokastra and Saranda is the wonderful Blue Eye, an underwater spring forming a pool of deepest blue (50L). Its setting in a cool, remote grove is quite spectacular, but the water is bracing, to say the least. Hop on any bus or minivan plying the Saranda–Gjirokastra route, and ask to be let off at the Syri i Kaltër; the pool is 20min from the road on a clear path. There’s also a decent restaurant and hotel on site.

Lofty Kruja, 35km from Tirana, was the focal point of national hero Skanderbeg’s resistance to the Ottoman invasions of the fifteenth century, and you’ll see his likeness all over town. Most people make a beeline for the castle, which houses several restaurants and an excellent History Museum, whose diverting collection of weaponry, icons and the like is augmented by an impressive modern interior.

Also within the castle walls is the Ethnographic Museum, housed in a gorgeous building with a serene outdoor courtyard. Souvenir sellers have taken over the town and the best place to buy your Albania flag T-shirt, Skanderbeg statuette or Mother Teresa lighter is the restored Ottoman bazaar, just below the castle access road.

These remote mountains make up the southernmost part of the Dinaric Alps that stretch from Albania, through Serbia and as far north as Slovenia. The range is best explored by trekking around the valley of Valbona. it’s a long but enjoyable journey from the capital, taking in a ferry crossing on the emerald waters of Lake Koman, but entirely worth it for this magnificent mountain scenery.

The picture-perfect valley of Valbona, which follows a river of the same name, is nestled among a collection of towering karst limestone peaks that reach heights of up to 2690m. Home to some of the country’s most picturesque homesteads, visiting Valbona is one of the best things to do in Albania for a true taste of Albanian country living.

The main activity around Saranda is a visit to Butrint and the fantastic beaches of Ksamil, which can both be visited in a single day trip from the town.

The small coastal village of Ksamil within Butrint National Park has a smattering of lovely public beaches lapped by spectacularly clear waters. Each cove is overlooked by a restaurant serving reasonably priced seafood (Guvat is the best of the bunch). The beaches are beautiful but busy in summer, and there are a few small islands close enough to swim to if you want a little extra space.

Splendidly sited on an exposed nub of land, the isolated ruins of Butrint National Park offer a peek into over 2500 years of history, and are a delight to explore on its eucalyptus-lined trails.

The area was first developed by the Greeks, and the expansive theatre and public baths were built soon after. Butrint then reached its zenith during Roman times, though most of the statues unearthed from this period are now in the museums of Tirana. You can see most of Butrint’s sights on a looped footpath, though do head up to the Acropolis for wonderful views and an excellent museum full of unearthed artefacts.

Oozing over the Albanian border, beautiful Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans, and also one of its most untouched. However, since it lies on the train line, it’s easily accessible and can make a good stop-off on your way to or from the coast. The main jump-off point is Virpazar, a cute little fishing village at the northern end of the lake, 1km back down the line to Podgorica from the station.

From here it’s a pleasant walk along the lake’s western shore, and though there’s nowhere to rent bikes if you’ve brought one along you’ll be in heaven. An hour’s ride will bring into sight a clutch of offshore monasteries, though to get any nearer you’ll have to search for a boat.

Albania’s largely meat-based cuisine brings together elements of Slavic, Turkish and Italian cuisines. Spit-roasted lamb is the traditional dish of choice, though today it’s qebab (kebabs) and qoftë (grilled lamb rissoles) that dominate menus, often served with a bowl of kos (yoghurt). Another interesting dish is fergesë, a mix of egg, onions and tomatoes (and meat in some regions) cooked in a clay pot.

Vegetarians will find that filling, generous salads are ubiquitous, and seafood is also plentiful around the coast. But for all this choice the modern Albanian youth – and many a tourist – subsists almost entirely on snack food, particularly burek, a pastry filled with cheese, meat or spinach; and sufllaqë, sliced kebab meat and french fries stuffed in a roll of flatbread.

In the southern part of Albania, not far from the town of Pärmet, are the Benja Hot Springs. They are located in a beautiful gorge of the Benja River, surrounded by lush greenery and spectacular mountain landscapes.

Visiting Benja Hot Springs is one of the best things to do in Albania for relaxation, thanks to their waters, which are naturally heated to a temperature of about 25-30 degrees Celsius. The hot springs consist of several cascading pools, each with its temperature and depth, and the water is known to have healing properties useful for various diseases.

Cross into Albania by land or sea, and you’ll soon notice clutches of grey, dome-like structures dotting the countryside. Under Hoxha’s rule, these bunkers were scattered around the country in tremendous numbers – estimates run as high as 750,000. These were no family shelters, but strategic positions to which every able-bodied man was expected to head, weapon in hand, at the onset of war.

Though Western spies did indeed make attempts to infiltrate the country, the bunkers were never really put to the test. Huge underground government bunkers can also be found, most notably in Tirana where one 106-room shelter known as Bunk’Art has been converted into a historical museum and art space, located near the Mount Dajti cable car station.

Gjirokastra is known for its beautiful Ottoman architecture and excellent location among the snow-capped peaks of the South Albanian Drino Valley. Charming cobbled streets lead to the castle, the most essential part of the city, often called the “City of Stone.”

While visiting Gjirokastra, you will also want to see the Zekate House, an early 19th-century tower considered the best example of Ottoman architecture in the city. This beautiful and fascinating ancient city is easily one of the most beautiful places in Albania.

2. Albanian Riviera

The Albanian Riviera is, without question, one of the most popular tourist spots in Albania. The Riviera has a growing reputation as an important music center with numerous international music festivals, including Turtle Fest and Soundwave Albania.

Nightclubs such as Havana Beach Club near Dermis and Jale Beach’s Follie Marine attract young people from all over Europe to the Albanian Riviera.

The seaside town of Himara is one of the coolest up-and-coming places on the Riviera. The beaches of Llamani, Porto Palermo, and Filikuri are some of the most beautiful in the region. The beach of Drymades is one of the busiest and most fun in the Balkans. The Riviera definitely tops the list if you’re trying to figure out where to go in Albania for a beach vacation.

3. Pogradec

Located on the shore of Lake Ohrid in eastern Albania, Pogradec is one of the most promising places in the country and is well worth a visit.

Lake Ohrid is the deepest lake in the Balkans , and although the Macedonian part of the lake is more popular, the Albanian coastline is undoubtedly growing.

Pogradec is known for its rich folklore, and the Puppet Theater Festival is one of the most interesting events to take place in the country.

Shenk-Jablanica National Park is located about a 30-45-minute drive from Pogradec, near the fountains of Drilon.

Berat is known as the “city of a thousand windows,” thanks to the typical Ottoman-style houses that Berat is famous for. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site  with more than 2,000 years of packed history.

The ancient city of Berat is an absolute must-see in Albania. If you climb to the top of the castle, you will be treated to a fantastic view of the city of Berat . Inside the fortress walls, you will see houses where people still live their everyday lives.

Wine tasting is one of the best things to do, especially for vino lovers. Albania is home to a surprisingly good vineyard scene. You can visit the four best vineyards (Cabo, Nurellari, Malinati, and Luani) in a day and taste the best of local Albanian wine.

Also, you may visit Roshnik – a well-known village in the area of Berat, which is often called the cleanest and one of the most civilized villages.

Okay – confession – Upper Qeparo is magical and maybe my favorite place in Albania (and no, not just because of the donkey I saw). It is an ideal place to see a traditional Albanian village but with a quirk: the village was left half abandoned.

After the fall of communism, many people went abroad, and the village was completely deserted. About half of the village is renovated, but many old stone houses are still in ruins. The streets are touched with age, with beautiful views and a rich history surrounding them.

You might lack things to do, but that is the beauty of this quiet, authentic village.

With turquoise waters and beautiful secluded beaches, the beautiful landscape of Dhermi attracts young Albanians from all over the country in summer. Not only the beaches but also Dhermi is the epicenter of lively nightlife, another reason the young people flock here when school’s out.

The city is situated on a hill overlooking the sea and offers spectacular sunsets. Take a drink in one of the many bars and restaurants at sunset; it is always an excellent way to spend the neon evening in Dhermi.

Although this place offers a cheerful and festive atmosphere , with lively beach bars scattered throughout, there are more than enough beaches for a quiet place to sit and enjoy the Albanian Riviera landscape.

7. Theth National Park – Albanian Alps

If you like to spend time outdoors, Theth is undoubtedly one of the best places in Albania and makes for a great Albania weekend getaway.

Nature lovers will enjoy the serene landscapes and charming villages that are still filled with authentic traditions, cuisine, and unique cultures.

Far away from the largest Albanian cities, tucked in the north of the country at the top of the Albanian Alps , Theth remains quiet and quaint most of the year.

Vuno has the same charm as Upper Queparo, which I love so much. Traditional stone houses and cobblestoned roads pass through the village and lead to a beautiful view of the olive groves and beaches along the Albanian Riviera. However, Vuno was abandoned decades ago and is only slowly (very slowly) rebuilding.

Gjipe Beach is not far away, and it is nice to chill if you stay in Vuno for a few nights.

23. Apollonia

Apollonia is an ancient city that flourished during the Roman Empire. Today’s biggest draw to the town for you is all the well-preserved ancient buildings and remains inside the Apollonian Archaeological Park. It is a must-see for those who are into Roman architecture and the period.

One of the best places in Albania is Borscht. Borsch has the longest beach in Albania, making it one of the most noteworthy in the country. Situated among olive groves, it is a beautiful place to hide from the madness of Saranda in summer.

please, when you take the responsibility to advertise the tourism in Albania, you better learn the history properly. Everything you see in Albania speaks Albanian, neither roman nor greek. It requires deeper study to tell the world that Butrinti, and all historic sites of ALBANIA speak the history of ALBANIANS who were the ones to create other NATIONS. Descending by Pelasgians/Illyrians, the ALBANIAN people are the oldest in Balkan/ILLYRIAN Peninsula and their ALBANIAN Language is the base of all the other languages that our neighbours speak. The time will come when the world will learn that TROJ=LAND or T’ +ROJ= TO+LIVE= was the land inhabited by ALBANIAN speaking people and was the only EMPIRE before roman and byzant were introduced. Albania has over 280 miles of coastline with serene bays, sandy beaches and small fishing villages. If that's not enough to convince you, you'll also get to admire some epic Ottoman architecture.

The unspoiled countryside is dotted with national parks, ancient castles and archaeological sites , and is home to the Albanian Alps which are perfect for hiking in summer and skiing in winter.

Getting to Albania from the rest of Europe is relatively easy as it's served by three of Europe’s biggest budget airlines; Ryanair , Easyjet and Wizz Air .

Most of Albania’s often beautiful railway routes have fallen into disrepair and been closed down. As such it’s not really possible to travel Albania by train (for the time being at least).

The nearby mountains are easily reachable from the city and there is a cable car to the top of Mount Dajti. It’s also only a short hop to the Adriatic coast!

2. Petrela castle

Petrela Castle is a popular tourist attraction not far from Tirana, and dates back to the 6th Century AD (though most of what you can see today was built in the 15th Century).

While Skanderbeg was off fighting the Ottoman Turks, the castle was controlled by his sister Mamica Kastrioti.

There's a restaurant located within the castle offering stunning views out across the Erzen valley and the peaks of the Skanderbeg mountains.

Petrela Castle is perched atop a 329 meter (1,079 foot) hilltop from where you can look out over the nearby olive groves. 

The castle is 10 miles south of central Tirana and takes around 30 minutes to drive.  Trust me, it's definitely worth visiting!

Albania’s wine making tradition dates back over 3,000 years to the Illyrians who occupied this Balkan country long before the Romans.

6. The Llogara Pass (Llogara National Park)

The Llogara Pass is a mountain pass in Llogara National Park .

It's located high up in the Ceraunian Mountains close to the coastline of the Albanian Riviera!

This winding coastal road offers incredible views overlooking the Ionian Sea and rustic villages far below. The pass tops out at a staggering 1,043 meters (3,422 feet), so it’s not your average stretch of highway.

The Llogara Pass forms part of the SH-8 highway between Dhermi and Dukat i Ri and stretches for around 20 miles.

Driving the Llogara Pass is definitely one of the more fun things to do in Albania , but given the high altitude, sharp turns and occasional lack of barriers, concentration is needed when navigating this stunning stretch of road, especially in winter.

The Llogara National Park is also well worth a visit for its beautiful scenery of alpine meadows, rocky outcrops, rivers, lakes and forest . In winter the park transforms into a snowy wonderland.

7. Gjipe Canyon

The Canyon of Gjipe is an 800-meter long canyon formed by the Ionian Sea on the Albanian Riviera.

The coastal waters of the canyon are home to loggerhead turtles among other interesting flora and fauna. It's also considered an important plant area thanks to some rare and endemic species found here.

Adrenaline junkies can have a go at canyoning or abseiling at Gjipe, and then finish up at the beach. 

The canyon opens up at Gjipe beach which is one of the most stunning stretches of coastline in all of Albania (and indeed the Balkan peninsula).

As Gjipe beach is only accessible on foot or by boat, it doesn’t get anywhere near the same number of tourists as other famous beaches in Albania.

If you’re looking for translucent, turquoise waters and a quiet, sandy beach to relax on, then it’s worth the extra effort to get there . For sure one of the best places to visit in Albania! 

To get to Gjipe you’ll need to take the SH8 (Llogara Pass) and turn off at a sign for the beach car park. From the car park, it’s a 45 minute walk along a rocky path down to the beach.

8. Porto Palermo

Porto Palermo is a large bay on the Albanian Riviera famed for its beaches and 19th Century castle.

Porto Palermo castle sits on a small peninsula that's all but cut off from the mainland save for a tiny strip of land by which to access the fortress.

The imposing triangular-shaped fortress once held a military prison, and it’s possible to explore the well-preserved buildings here.

There is a small, pebble beach with a restaurant and basic facilities. The water is clear and blue, and this quiet stretch doesn’t get very busy compared to other spots along this stretch of coastline.

10. The Blue Eye

The Blue Eye (known locally as the Springs of Bistrice, as it forms the Bistrice River) is a freshwater spring in Theth National Park, Southern Albania.

The spring is famed for its translucent waters that can be seen to a depth of 50 meters . It’s not clear exactly how deep the spring is, as divers have never been below the 50 meter mark and no one has ever reached the bottom.

Taking a dip in the chilly, fresh waters of the Blue Eye is one of the best things to do in Albania, and the surrounding forested countryside is stunningly beautiful.

The spring is located 14 miles northeast of the city of Sarande and takes 30 minutes to drive. Another option is to take a tour which includes plenty of time for swimming, and also takes in nearby Lekursi Castle.

11. Sarande (Saranda)

Sarande is another resort town on the Albanian Riviera that's located on a beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay.

To the west is the Ionian Sea and to the east, the foothills are covered in olive groves and a mountain landscape beyond.

The ocean around Sarande is known for its clear, turquoise waters which are perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Above the town you’ll find the ruins of Lekursi Castle which offers stunning views out across the bay and islands, making it one of the best places to visit in Albania.

What is a Good Budget for Albania?

Albania is one of the cheapest countries in Europe and a daily budget of $50 will suffice if staying in modest accommodation.

Many wonderful hotels cost as little as $30 per night, which is almost unheard of in the rest of Europe. And this doesn’t mean that standards are lower either! 

Is Albania Safe to Visit?

Albania has something of a bad reputation, in part thanks to its years being closed off from the rest of Europe.

However the people are helpful and friendly, and the country is no less safe than other parts of Europe, with one major exception.

Landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) are present in the northeast of the country along the border with Kosovo.

Don't venture off the beaten path in these areas and check with locals where is safe (even then, mines may have moved due to flooding and other natural phenomenons).

Provided you avoid the border area with Kosovo, and take the usual traveler precautions of not flashing valuables, you should have a worry-free time in this incredible country.

Best places to visit in Albania: A one week itinerary

Soaring alpine peaks, centuries-old castles, dramatic canyons and shimmering, sun-soaked bays are just some of the incredible wonders of Albania, which makes this one of the best kept secrets in the Balkans.

The compact country is blissfully off the well-trodden European tourist circuit, and a great option for backpackers thanks to its relatively budget-friendly tours, public transportation and accommodation options.

While many travellers try and combine a quick trip here with its more popular neighbours like Greece, Italy and Montenegro , there are so many places to visit in Albania that it’s easy to fill up a whole week and still hardly scratch the surface.

I should know; I spent nine days exploring from north to south, and still didn’t quite manage to tick everything off of my to-do list (I’m looking at you, Albanian Alps hiking trip).

So, what’s the best way to see this Balkan nation’s top spots if you only have one week for your Albania trip? Here are the greatest hits.

Day 1: Tirana

Most people kick off their Albania itinerary in Tirana , since the capital is home to the international airport and is well connected by bus with other destinations throughout the country. It’s also possible to see all of the main attractions in a single day, since they’re quite close together in the walkable city centre.

One of the top places to visit in Tirana is Skanderbeg Square, a large, pedestrian-only plaza with a huge statue of a military commander on horseback, and a couple of museums including the National Historic Museum. This is also home to landmarks like the Clock Tower, and picturesque Et’hem Bey Mosque.

Be sure to take a quick walk through the Castle of Tirana, a former fortress that now holds trendy bars, boutiques and restaurants within its walls.

One of the top Tirana attractions is Grand Park (also known as the Artificial Lake) where a busy promenade winds around the manmade lake. Here, you’ll enjoy great city views, a botanical garden, forested trails, a pool, zoo and playgrounds, as well as restaurants and cafes overlooking the water.

Other spots to see include Bunk’Art which is a former bunker-turned-gallery accessed by tunnels, the Pyramid, and the Dajti Ekspres which is the longest cableway in the Balkans at 4,670 metres high.

Day 2: Shkodër

One of the prettiest Albania tourist attractions is the city of Shkodër, which is a two hour drive north of Tirana en route to the towering Albanian Alps. It lies on the end of Lake Shkodra (also called Lake Skadar and Lake Scutari), and is so close to the border that it’s possible to see Montenegro across the water.

The highlight of a visit to Shkodër is Rozafa Castle, a grand, 4000-year-old fortification perched high on a hillside overlooking the entire city and the meandering Drin and Buna rivers. Crumbling stone walls and arched doorways peek out into the horizon, and the centuries-old masterpiece combinated with the stunning surroundings make this spot photo heaven.

The castle is a half hour walk from downtown and taxis aren’t easily available, so plan accordingly if you’re meeting a guided tour or need to take a bus back to Tirana. Admission is 200 lek (about $2)

Back in the old town, pastel facades line the pedestrian-only streets where there are restaurants, cafes and some small shops. It’s impossible to miss the Ebu Bekër Mosque which was built in the ‘90s to replace one that was destroyed during communist rule, and there are also a handful of sun-soaked parks complete with palm trees.

Public buses go back and forth all day long, which depart from the main bus terminal in Tirana and drop riders off in downtown Shkodër a few blocks from the mosque. It costs 350 lek on the way there and 400 lek back, which works out to about $4 each way.

Shkodër is just one of the great day trips from Tirana: some other options include visiting the Castle of Kruja, cruising along the gem-toned Shala river and hiking up Mount Gamti for an incredible view of Bovila Lake:

Day 3: Berat

Known as the ‘City of a Thousand Windows’, Berat city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most enchanting destinations in Albania thanks to its towering castle, pretty patchwork of window frames and perch along the banks of the Osum River.

Dating back to the Ottoman era, Berat is located in the Berati region which is known for marble mining, olive groves and producing the famous Albanian alcohol raki. There are also vineyards including Alpeta Winery which has been making wine and raki since the 90s, and the family-run Cibo Winery which opened the first tasting room in Albania.

Start your day here exploring the medieval centre, which is a maze of hilly cobblestone streets and notable structures like the Leaden Mosque which dates back to the 16th century, and the Gate of the Pasha.

The main attraction is the 13th century Berat Castle (Kalaja e Beratit), a complex with crumbling churches, Ottoman mosques and panoramic viewpoint overlooking the city. At one point there were 44 churches and two mosques here, but most were reduced to rubble during wars and destruction at the hands of the communist leader Enver Hoxha.

Today, some of the ruins remain and there are also a handful of restaurants and shops at the top.

A winding road from the city centre leads up the hill, and there’s also a more adventurous footpath starting from a small set of stairs on the north side of Rruga Antipatrea, between Gorica Bridge and the one near the Old Town.

It takes about 30 minutes to do the climb, and the effort is rewarded with great vantage points of the windowed houses and St. Michael’s Church.

End the day with a stroll along Bulevardi Republika which is lined with cafes, bars, ice cream shops and restaurants. The pedestrian-only street is across from the river and a beautiful park, and is the busiest spot in town each night which makes it perfect for people watching.

Day 4: Osumi Canyon and Bogove waterfall

One of the best day trips from Berat is the wild, wet adventure through the Osumi Canyon (also known as Osum Canyon) which is a 90 minute drive from the city.

The ‘Grand Canyon of Albania’ boasts dramatic scenery, sweeping views of the Osumi Valley and thrilling activities on the water including rafting trips and canyoning.

Book a one day Osumi Canyon tour, which starts with a couple of sightseeing stops en route, then heads right to the base of the canyon. Prepare to get soaking wet as you hike for about an hour through the pristine gorge and swim in the azure water.

While the water is cold and the rocks underfoot can make it a challenge, the intense experience is unforgettable and absolutely stunning which makes this one of the best things to do in Albania.

On the way back to Berat, most groups stop at the cascading Bogove waterfall, which just so happens to be almost unbearably cold with a water temperature of six degrees celsius.

It takes about 20 minutes to hike along the dusty road through Tomorri Mountain National Park with some suspect bridge crossings, which is well worth it to see the breathtaking falls which are tucked away in a cluster of sandstone rocks and cascade into a turquoise pool.

Day 5: Gjirokaster

With architecture dating back to the Ottoman-era, a memorable historic centre and sweeping views from the hilltop fortress, the southern city of Gjirokastër is one of the best places to visit in Albania.

The ‘Stone City’ is a UNESCO site beloved for its outdoor bazaar and Ottoman-era homes. Narrow streets wind up to the imposing Gjirokastër Castle which dates back to the 12th century, and is perched more than 300 metres high.

Highlights include cannons tucked inside stone tunnels, a giant clock tower, lookout points that have a birds-eye view of the entire valley, and even a former US air force plane that was captured back in the 1950s.

While some visitors are happy to spend a few days here exploring the maze of streets, Gjirokastër’s attractions are mostly centered around the historic old town which makes it possible to see the top spots in the city in just a few hours if time is tight.

It’s also the perfect pit stop while travelling between Berat and the Albanian Riviera.

The most popular beaches in the Albanian Riviera include Dhërmi, Himare, Borsh and Porto Palermo, which are a 1-2 hour drive from the city. 1. Thermal Springs of Benja in Permet

The Thermal Springs of Benja are one of the most beautiful locations in Albania.

Near the town of Permet, in the South of Albania, there are several natural hot springs. The water from the hot springs flows into the river. Some of the hot water from the river is diverted into some man-made pools at the bank of the river.

You can swim or soak in one of these stone pools at the bank of the river. Whilst you are soaking in one of the natural hot tubs, you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

The river that fills the hot pools is a magical light blue colour. Along the river, there are several little waterfalls and you constantly hear the sound of the water rushing by. Moreover, there is a gorgeous Medieval bridge that crosses the river, which was build during the Ottoman empire.

The Lin village is a small village at the banks of Lake Ohrid, near the border with North Macedonia.

The Lin village is situated on a small peninsula, that points into Lake Ohrid. The small village is close to the larger lake side town Pogradec. If you plan on visiting Pogradec, it is definitely worth making a stopover in the Lin village.

The Lin village is a quiet fishing village. It is a great example of an authentic Albanian village. If you like travelling off-the-beaten-path and meeting the locals, then you will really enjoy strolling through Lin.

The village has characteristic small houses with beautiful red roofs. Apart from the old town, you can also visit one of the oldest mosaics in Eastern Europe near the village.

3. The Lake Koman Ferry

In the North of Albania, near the town of Shkoder, you can take the Lake Koman Ferry.

From Shkoder city, you must drive for approximately 2 hours to get to Lake Koman. In Koman, you can board the Lake Koman Ferry boat.

The boat journey on Lake Koman is absolutely stunning. The lake is a bit like a long winding river, that turns and twists through the mountain landscape.

The Lake Koman ferry makes a 3-hour journey from the port of Koman to the port of Fierze. During the 3-hour journey, all you see is nature. The lake is surrounded by beautiful mountain cliffs.

Every time, the boat will travel towards a cliff and you think the lake will end, there is a turn in the river and a new landscape is revealed.

The Lake Koman ferry was not intended to be a tourist attaction. It was actually merely aimed at transportation for the locals.

However, the ferry journey was so beautiful that tourists from all over the world came to board the Lake Koman Ferry.

Bradt Guides even descibed the boat trip on Lake Koman as “one of the world greatest boat trips”.

4. The Cape of Rodon

The Cape of Rodon is one of the undiscovered, hidden gems that only the local people know about.

The Cape of Rodon is a rocky peninsula that points into the Adriatic Sea. A narrow strip of land, which is overgrown with wild nature, points into the wild Adriatic sea.

The cape is about a 1.5 hour drive from Tirana and it is an absolutely stunning natural sight. You must park the car, and hike along a hilly trail for about 45 minutes. But it is worth the effort!

At the end of the hiking trail, you stand on the top of a hill, which overlooks the Cape of Rodon. You get a top view of the gorgeous peninsula.

You can hike down the steep hill, to visit the ruins of the castle of Skanderbeg. The castle was built by Albania’s national hero, in an effort to have easy access to the sea. Of course, there are several coastal and beach locations close to Tirana city.

However, the Cape of Rodon is the most natural, untouched and magical coastal spot near the capital city!

5. The view of Tirana from Mount Dajti

One of the best things to do, when you are staying in Tirana, is making a day trip to Mount Dajti.

Mount Dajti is the closest mountain near the capital city Tirana. From the bottom of the hill, you can take the Dajti Ekspres Cable Car to get to the Dajti Balcony.

The Cable Car journey lasts 15 minutes, and the view from the cable car is absolutely stunning! You fly accross treetops, by mountain cliffs, over little farm houses and you see Tirana city in the distance.

At the end of the cable car trip, you arrive to the Dajti Balcony at a height of 1613 above sea level. From the balcony, you have an amazing view of Tirana city, Durres beach and the Adriatic Sea.

6. The Blue Eye of Theth

The Blue Eye of Theth is one of the most magical places in Albania.

The Blue Eye of Theth is a natural mountain pool. It is located in the Albanian Alps in the North of Albania.

To visit the Blue Eye of Theth, you must take a 4-wheel drive taxi from Shkoder city to the Theth village in the Albanian Alps. The drive will take approximately 3.5 hours.

Once you arrive in the Theth mountain village, you must travel to the Nyderlysa village. You can either take a taxi for approximately 30 minutes or hike to Nyderlysa for about 3 hours. At Nyderlysa, you get on a 1 hour hiking trail through the mountains, which leads to the Blue Eye of Theth.

It journey is worth it though, the Blue Eye of Theth is absolutely stunning. The natural pool is filled with ice-cold mountain water. The water is so clear that you can see every little rock on the bottom of the pool.

The pool is surrounded by beautiful cliffs and greenery. And a little waterfall fills the pool with fresh water.

There is a wooden plateau on the top of the river, where you can enjoy a picnic or a fresh drink, whilst enjoying the beauty around you.

7. Zvernec island in the Narta Lagoon

Zvernec island is one of the most picturesque locations in Albania.

The island of Zvernec is a little island, which is located at a 20 minute drive from Vlore beach. Zvernec is connected to the mainland via a long wooden bridge.

From the coast, you have the most amazing view of the water, the wooden bridge and the island.

You can cross the wooden bridge to visit the little island. On the island, there is a little monastery, which was built during the 13th and 14th century, whilst Albania was a part of the Byzantine empire.

The island is actually very small, it is 430 meters long and 300 meter wide. And most of the island is covered in pine trees.

Zvernec is not a full-day trip experience. However, it is a great 30 minute stopover, which you can make on your way from Vlore to the beaches of the Albanian Riviera in the south!

8. Ksamil beach & Ksamil islands

Ksamil beach is a paradise! There are many beautiful beaches in the Albanian Riviera, but Ksamil beach is the most beautiful beach in Albania, without a doubt.

Therefore, Ksamil beach is called “the pearl of the Albanian Riviera”.

The beach of Ksamil is set on a little peninsula, in the ultimate south of Albania. The beach has perfect white sand. And the water of the Ionian Sea is turqoise blue and crystal clear. And there are little wooden shutters that lead into the sea.

But the highlight of Ksamil beach are the four little islands in the sea. The Ksamil islands are located very close to the coast. You can swim to the nearest island. Or you can rent a kayak or boat to peddle to the further islands.

All the islands are uninhabited and completly overgrown with lush nature. Of the four islands, the twin islands are the most interesting. These two little islands are connected to each other by a narrow strip of land.

Stay until the evening for a beautiful view of the sun going over the little islands!

9. Gjipe Beach

Gjipe beach is one of the most remote beaches in the Albanian Riviera. Because the beach is completely surrounded by high cliffs.

Since the beach itself is more difficult to reach than the other beaches of the Albanian Riviera, it is completely private and isolated!

Whereas most of the beaches of the Albanian Riviera can be reached by car. Getting to Gjipe requires a hike. Take the road from Vuno towards the village of Ilias and follow the signage. The last part of the road is unpaved and rocky. You must walk for about 20 minutes to reach the amazing beach of Gjipe.

Gjipe beach truly is a hidden paradise! Although it is a bit more difficult to reach, it might just be the perfect beach you were looking for.

Make sure you bring some food and drinks with you though, because this hidden beach does not provide any catering.

10. The Grunas Waterfall

The Grunas waterfall is one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Albania. The waterfall of Grunas is a 25 meter high waterfall in the Albanian Alps in the North of Albania.

You can hike to the waterfall from the Theth mountain village. It takes about 50 minutes to hike to the waterfall from the center of the Theth village. It is a medium difficulty hiking trip.

At the bottom of the waterfall, there is a natural pool with emeralt green water. It is one of the most beautiful places, I have ever seen.

To visit the waterfall, you must travel to the Albanian Alps. However, if you plan on hiking from the Theth village accross the Valbone Pass to the Valbone village. Make sure you plan an additional night in Theth, so that you can explore the natural wonders of Theth, like the Grunas waterfall and the Blue Eye of Theth.

11. Drymades beach

Drymades beach is on of the most beautiful hidden beaches in the Albanian Riviera. The beach of Drymades is located to the South of Dhermi beach. However, it is a completely different world.

Drymades is completely different. It is a natural beach with a beautiful rock formation in the middle of the beach.

There is perfect golden sand and the incredible turqoise water, is calm and still. If you want to get away from Dhermi, it is the perfect place to enjoy a natural beach.

And even though, the Guardian ranked Drymades beach as the second most beautiful beach in Europe. And the Lonely Planet calls Drymades: “One of the more attractive beaches in the Albanian Riviera”. It is still quiet in the high season.

So if you find yourself in the Northern part of the Albanian Riviera, then Drymades beach should be on the top of your list!

12. The Mangalem district in Berat city

Berat is by far the most beautiful historical city in Albania. And the historical center of Berat is also a UNESCO Heritage Site.

The old town center of Berat was built on the slope of the hill. If you look upwards from the valley, you will see hundreds of little white houses that were built on the side of the hill.

That is why Berat is also called “the city of a thousand windows”. Because if you stand at the bottom of the hill, it literally feels like all the little windows look down at you.

The historical city center of Berat consists of two historical neighbourhoods: The Mangalem Quarter and the Gorica Quarter. Of the two neighbourhoods, the Mangalem Quarter is the highlight.

You can spend your morning exploring the Berat Castle on the top of the hill. And then take some free time to explore the historical city center by foot.

Insider tip: Go for lunch or dinner in the Gorica Quarter on the other side of the river. Because from the terraces in Gorica, you will have a stunning view of the river, the Mangalem Quarter and the Berat Castle.

13. Mirror beach

Mirror beach is a small beach surrounded by cliffs in the South of Albania.

If you have researched the Albanian Riviera online, you have most definitely come accross Ksamil beach. Because Ksamil is called “the pearl of the Albanian Riviera”. Simply said, Ksamil is a paradise-like beach and without a doubt the most beautiful beach in Albania.

Mirror beach, on the other hand, is much less known. It is a small beach, which is completely surrounded by cliffs.

When you stand on the beach, you will see cliffs on either side and the waves come crashing towards the shore.

The beach is called Mirror beach, because the water of the sea looks like a gigantic mirror, as it reflects the sunlight. Needless to say, it is an absolute blast to watch the sun go down in the evening.

I am not saying that you should not visit Ksamil beach, because you absolutely should! However, if you find yourself in the high season and Ksamil beach is busy on the day you visit. You may want to spend some time at the nearby Mirror beach as well, so that you can enjoy some privacy too!

And Mirror beach gets raving reviews on Tripadvisor, so you do not have to take my word for it, simply read some reviews!

14. The Grand Park in Tirana

The Grand Park in Tirana is one of the most beautiful places in the capital city. When people ask me about visiting Tirana city, I usually recommend a walking tour through the city center. Because it gives you a lovely overview of the landmarks and the history of Albania.

If you do decide to go for a walking tour of Tirana, I recommend you finish your tour at the Grand Park of Tirana.

There is a large artificial lake in the middle of the park, which gives you a stunning view of the surrounding park lands and neighbourhoods. Walk or go for a run along the water. Or enjoy a lazy cup of coffee, whilst staring accros the water.

Although the Grand Park is not a full-day trip or a destination in itself. It is the perfect ending to a day of exploring the capital city of Albania.

15. Rana e Hedhun beach

Rana e Hedhun is a stunning beach in the North of Albania.

If you arrive at Tirana International Airport, you can either travel to the North of Albania or the South of Albania. The South of Albania is mostly known for the beautiful beaches of the Albanian Riviera. And the North of Albania is popular amongst hikers, who enjoy exploring the Albanian Alps.

However, even if you decide to visit the Albanian Alps, you can still enjoy an afternoon on the beach! There is no need to travel all the way to the South of Albania, in order to enjoy a few hours on the beach.

Rana e Hedhun is a gorgeous beach close to Shkoder city. Most hikers plan a 3-4 day round trip through the Albanian Alps, which starts and ends in Shkoder city. I recommend you plan 1 extra day in Shkoder, to explore the historical city center in the morning and to go to Rana e Hedhun beach in the afternoon.

Rana e Hedhun is also known as “Thrown Sand”. Because the beach is known for its large sand dune. You can climb the hill and slide down the sand dune towards the sea. Although there are some small restaurants along the shore, the beach still has a “beach village” feeling.

Avoid the nearby Shengjin beach, which has many hotels and resorts along the shore. And visit the beautiful beach instead.

16. Butrint

Butrint is the most beautiful UNESCO Heritage Site in Albania. It is an archaeological park set on the little peninsula.

At Butrint, you can visit the ruins of an ancient city. Throughout history, Butrint was a Greek city, a Roman city, a bishopric, a part of the Venetian empire and a part of the Ottoman empire. As a result, in the park you can see ruins of each period of the cities development.

However, when I write about an archaeological park, sometimes people think it is only of interest to historians and archaeologists. Which is absolutely not true.

Yes, Butrint has stunning ruins. But it is the nature surrounding the ruins that makes this park something special.

The archaeological park is set on a little peninsula, which is overgrown with lush nature. And surrounding the peninsula, there is beautiful water of Lake Butrint and the Vivari channel.

Because of the unique combination of historical ruins and nature, everyone will enjoy a 2-hour visit to Butrint. And it is conveniently located near Ksamil beach, Saranda beach and the Blue Eye of Albania, so you can easily combine it with another destination!

17. The Blue Eye of Albania, near Saranda

The Blue Eye of Albania is a magical spot.

Essentially, the Blue Eye of Albania is a fresh water spring. There is an underwater cave deep underneath the water. And the spring pumps fresh water to the surface of the river with an enourmous force.

The reason why this fresh water spring, became a touristic attraction, is its mesmerizing beauty.

The water of the spring is a bright blue colour. So bright in fact, that you won’t believe it is natural.

Moreover, the spring is called “The Blue Eye”, because it resembles a human eye. The underwater cave is the black pupil of a human eye. And the bright blue water is the iris of a human eye.

A fun fact is that nobody knows exactly, how deep the Blue Eye of Albania is. Numberous divers have tried to reach the bottom of the spring. However, this type of cave diving is extremely dangerous, because the diver has to swim against that enourmous water pressure. The Blue Eye is at least 50 meters deep, but nobody knows how much deeper…

For the adventurous people, you can jump into the spring from a platform at the top. And you will resurface immediately after, because the water pressure will push you up!

18. The springs of Drilon

The springs of Drilon are a beautiful touristic location near Lake Ohrid.

Lake Ohrid is a massive lake on the border of Albania and North Macedonia. On the Albanian side of the lake, you can visit the town of Pogradec, the village of Lin and the springs of Drilon.

The springs of Drilon are the origin of the Drin river, which flows into Lake Ohrid. This beautiful place is a well-known touristic resort amongst the Albanian people. Along the waterside, there are many decorative threes. And there is a little pond, which crosses to a tiny island.

It is a very pretty and peaceful location. And if you are in the area of Lake Ohrid, it is definitely worth a stopover.

19. Jale beach

Jale beach is my personal favorite beach in the Albanian Riviera. And if the above picture has not convinced you, then I do not know what will…

Jale beach is a small beach in the middle of the Albanian Riviera. If you drive along the coastal road, you will find Jale between Dhermi beach and Himare beach.

The beach itself is a small bay facing the Ionian Sea. Amongst the locals, Jale beach is known as “the beach with the clearest water of the Albanian Riviera”.

On one side of the half-moon shaped bay, there is a little peninsula with a hotel overlooking the beach. This hotel was actually used during the communist regime by the party elite. And it is still functional as a hotel until this day!

Jale is also pupular for its campsides, where you can rent a tent near the beach.

Moreover, if you are in Jale, you can book a sailing, biking, canoe or hiking trip to the nearby Gjipe beach. Since Gjipe is complety surrounded by cliffs, you can peddle your way to this hidden beach, if you start from Jale beach!

20. Porto Palermo and the Castle of Ali Pasha

Porto Palermo is a stunning sightseeing location in the Albanian Riviera.

In the middle of the Bay of Porto Palermo, you can visit a little peninsula. It is almost an island, but it is connected to the mainland via a narrow strip of land. On the peninsula, you can visit the Castle of Ali Pasha.

The Castle of Ali Pasha is trianglar shaped castle. The highlight is the rooftop deck, which gives you a panoramic view of the entire Bay of Porto Palermo.

Historians are devided over who actually built this triangular shaped castle. Although some Albanian history books say it was built by the Albanian governor “Ali Pasha” during the Ottoman empire. There are others, who believe it was built by the Venetians, since it has the same shape as the Venetian castle at Butrint.

It is of course possible that history was re-written during the communist period, because the Albanian Ali Pasha was a national hero, which fit the nationalistic promotion of the communist dictator.

Regardless of who built this castle, I definitely recommend a quick stop on route to the South of the Albanian Riviera. If only to take a stunning picture from the castle’s rooftop!

21. The stunning view from the Llogara Pass

The Llogara Pass offers one of the most beautiful views in Albania.

The Llogara Pass is a viewpoint on the coastal road along the Albanian Riviera. All the beaches of the Albanian Riviera are located alongside the main coastal road. The coastal road starts at Vlore beach and it leads to Saranda beach in the South of Albania.

The Llogara Pass is the highest point on the coastal road. It has a height of 1043 meters above sea level.

When you drive from Vlore beach to the south, you will drive over the winding road to the Llogara Pass before you reach Dhermi beach.

From the Llogara Pass, you can see Dhermi beach, the Dhermi village and Palase beach. Moreover, you will have a stunning view of the Ionian Sea.

There is a lovely restaurant at the top of the pass, which has floor-to-ceiling windows, from where you can enjoy the view. It is great to plan a coffee break or a lunch at the restaurant on your way the south of Albania.

22. The Venice Art Mask Factory

The Venice Art Mask Factory is by far the most interesting place to visit in Shkoder city.

The Venice Art Mask Factory was started by Edmond Angoni. He is an Albanian man, who worked in Italy for many years, before returing home to Albania to start his studio.

The factory produces handicraft masks for the Venetian carnival. All the masks are hand-made by a series of artists. And they are one-of-a-kind.

The Venice Art Mask Factory has a reputation for producing high quality masks, which are exported and solt in shops all around the world.

Apart from the art studio, there is a mask showroom. In the showroom, you can see a large collection of Venetian masks. And if you like you can buy one of the masks as a souvenir to bring home.

Shkoder as a city is known for its artistic vibe and the Venice Art Mask Factory is one of the highlights.

23. Monastery beach

Monastery beach is one of the best kept secrets in Albania.

Monastery beach is a little beach located between Saranda beach and Ksamil beach. It is a part of the Albanian Riviera, but it is not a well-known beach.

Both Saranda beach and Ksamil beach are incredibly popular beaches. Saranda is the largest coastal city in the Albanian Riviera. Therefore, Saranda is also known as “the capital of the Albanian Riviera”. Ksamil beach is the most beautiful beach in the Albanian Riviera and known as “the pearl of the Albanian Riviera”.

However, both Saranda and Ksamil are busy and they attrack many tourists in the high season. Therefore, if you want to get away from the crowds in the high season, Monastery beach is a great option.

Monastery beach is secluded. The beach is surrounded by high cliffs on both sides. The best part of this beach is the isolation and privacy.

You can hike up the hill to the 14th century monastery of Saint George. From the hill, you have a stunning view of Monastery beach, the Ionian Sea and Lake Butrint.

And you do not have to make up your mind now. Because Monastery beach is conveniently located between Saranda and Ksamil. So if you find either beach too crowded, you can easily drive or take a taxi to the quieter Monastery beach.

24. Petrela village and Petrela Castle

Petrela Castle is a great place to visit for a day-trip from Tirana.

Petrela is a little village located very close to the capital city Tirana. From Tirana’s city center, it will only take you about 25 minutes to drive or take a taxi to Petrela.

Although Tirana and Petrela are close to each other, they are completely different worlds.

When you drive into the Petrela village, you will immediately fall in love with the romantic athmosphere. As you drive along the winding road, you will see Olive groves everywhere.

Along the road, there are little restaurants and mom-and-pop owned hotels. At the top of the hill, you can visit the Petrela Castle. The castle was built on the top of a large rock.

From the castle, you have the most amazing panoramic view of the valley, the little village and the hills.

The castle used to be a part of the defense of the national hero Skanderbeg. Skanderbeg was a military commander, who defended the Albanians against the invasion of the Ottoman Turks. Skanderbeg himself was based in the nearby Kruje Castle, but his sister Mamica was based in Petrela.

25. The Albanian Alps

If you enjoy visiting rough and untouched nature, then you must definitely visit the Albanian Alps.

The Albanian Alps are also known as the Accursed Mountains. The Alps are a large mountain range in the North of Albania.

The beauty of visiting the Albanian Alps is that they remain remote until this day. This is mainly due to the fact that this region is still relatively difficult to reach.

If you would like to visit the Theth mountain village in the Albanian Alps, you must book a four-wheel-drive taxi in Shkoder city. From Shkoder city, it takes roughly 3.5 hours to get to the Theth village.

Although the first part of the road to Theth has asphalt. The last hour of your journey, you will drive on a stoney dirt track.

However, it remoteness also is the beauty of the Albanian Alps. You can spend the night in an authenic guesthouse. And as you wander through the little villages of the Albanian Alps, it feels as though you are going back in time.

One of the main attractions is a day-hike accross the 1800 meter high Valbone Pass. This part of the mountains is so remote, that the only way to get from the Theth village to the Valbone village is by hiking the trail. There simply is no road connecting the two villages.

26. The view from Lekuresi Castle in Saranda

The Lekuresi Castle is a great place to visit, if you are staying in Saranda.

Saranda is the largest coastal city in the Albanian Riviera. The city’s hotels are built around the large bay.

To get an amazing view of the city of Saranda, you can drive up the steep road to Lekuresi Castle.

From the castle’s walls, you have a stunning panoramic view. On a clear day, you can see the entire city of Saranda, Corfu island, Ksamil beach and Butrint.

The castle was built by the Ottomans Turks in the 16th century, when they ruled over Albania. The main reason for building the castle was the strategic location. From the castle, the Ottomans could control the road to Butrint and protect their empire from attacks from Corfu island.

Although the castle itself is mostly in ruins, it is the view that makes this location worth visiting.

27. Grama Bay

Grama Bay is one of the most gorgeous and unspoiled beaches in the Albanian Riviera. Grama Bay is a part of the Karaburun Peninsula. Karaburun is a rocky peninsula that points into the sea between Vlore beach and Dhermi beach.

There are several hidden beaches along the peninsula of Karaburun, but Grama Bay is the absolute highlight without a doubt. Therefore, Grama Bay is also known as the “jewel of the Albanian Riviera”.

Grama Bay is a very remote beach. It can be reached by taking a boat from the Dhermi village. The boat trip costs roughly 150 euros, but it can accommodate 6 or 7 people. The only other way is hiking for 6 hours, however, you will need to hike through the remote and hilly terain. And you definitely need a good supply of drinking water.

Grama Bay is also known as “the Bay of Scripts”. Because Grama Bay provides shelter from the rough sea. Throughout history, sailers carmed inscriptions and symbols in the cliffs surrounding the bay, to give thanks to their gods.

Scholars have analyzed the inscriptions in the cliffs and found ancient, medieval Greek and Latin languages.

Visiting the Bay of Grama is absolutely worth it, however, it does require some proper planning to get to this hidden gem.

28. The endless view from Kruje Castle

Kruje Castle is a classic day-trip destination for tourists, who are staying in Tirana. Mostly because it is a beautiful sightseeing location, which is only a 45 minute drive from Tirana.

The Castle of Kruje is located on a hilltop and it has the most amazing view. From the castle, you can see the entire city of Tirana, several other villages, the valley, the mountain landscape, the Adriatic Sea and Durres beach.

Inside the castle, you can also visit the Skanderbeg Museum and the Ethnographic Museum. The Skanderbeg Museum is dedicated to Albania’s national hero Skanderbeg. He was a military commander, who reunited the Albanian tribes in a fight against the invasion of the Ottoman Turks. And in the Etnographic Museum, you get a unique insight in an Albanian family house.

There is also a lovely Bazaar market with handicraft items. And there is a variety of restaurants and coffee houses.

But by far the highlight of visiting Kruje is the endless view.

29. Pirate’s Cave

Close to Dhermi beach, you can get on a speed boat and visit the Pirate’s Cave.

This activity starts from Dhermi beach. You can get on a speedboat from Dhermi to the Pirate’s Cave, which costs 8 euros per person. Or you can buy a combined boat trip to the Pirate’s Cave and Gjipe beach for 2000 Lek (approximately 17 euros).

The Pirate’s Cave is a stunning location. The cave is located underneath the Saint Theodoros Rock. It is a sea cave, which can accommodate one small boat. The ceiling is high and there is a hole in the ceiling through which a little light enters the cave.

The Pirate’s cave is a beautiful location and based on the reviews on Tripadvisor it is one of the best things to do near Dhermi beach.

30. Driving along the coastal road

The coastal road between Vlore beach and Saranda beach is a stunning route. This is the main road that leads by all of the most beautiful beaches of the Albanian Riviera.

Be sure to plan some extra time, if you are driving along this road. Because from the turning and twisting road, you will have many stunning views of the beaches below.

durres beach isnt the best and theres a problem with debris washing up atm.

podgradec on the albanian side of lake ohrid is underated in my opinion,bit of a stretch for a day trip though.
