Marrakech - Imlil - Marrakech

Our driver will pick you up around 09:00 am and then we will be heading towards the hidden Berber villages in the High Atlas Mountains passing through Tahnaout, Valley Ghighaya, Moulay Brahim gorges, and Asni which is popular for its weekly local market. Once we get to Imlil, you'll be amazed by its unbelievable natural sceneries, landscapes, and its green valley that stays fresh even during the summer. You either ride a mule around the Berber villages to enjoy the stunning sights or take a walk for 2 - 3 hours to Armed, Shamharoush, or Tizi N'Tachdirt. You'll have lunch in a local restaurant or guesthouse, after that you'll continue your walk for one or two more hours before we head back to Marrakech.

Imlil day trip Marrakech is a day excursion to the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech to visit the magical site Imlil. You will take a guided trek around villages and enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains. Imlil situated in the heart of Mizane valley, is the most popular trailhead in Morocco. It is about an hour 30 minutes drive from Marrakech to Imlil, the main starting point of treks. We will continue through the valley of Tahnaoute and Asni. And in Imlil, we will take a walk of 2 to 3 hours through villages then visit the beautiful Toubkal Kasbah in the valley. It is possible to ride mules around Berber villages and enjoy the stunning views. In the afternoon, after you enjoy a traditional lunch in a Berber Guesthouse, we will retrace our steps when we return to Marrakech.

Day trip from Marrakech to Imlil Itinerary

Meet your Private English-speaking driver at 9am in your Riad and then drive towards Imlil through beautiful Gorges and enchanting Berber villages of Tahnaouet, Mouly Brahim and Asni. The journey takes a few hours, but there are a number of interesting stops along the way.

Upon arrival at the charming rural village of Imlil (1800 m / 5,900 ft), you’ll be welcomed by your local guide with a cup of tea on a scenic terrace while providing you a brief of the excursion before riding mules or by walking through the Berber villages of Ait Souka, Targa Imoula and Tagadirte. As you move up, the trail leads you along lush green river banks, sparkling waterfalls and gentle brooks, and enormous walnut groves also. It’s particularly beautiful during spring when the trees start blossoming. Afterwards, stop to enjoy spectacular cascades and stunning picturesque high atlas views en route to Armed village (1902m), where free time is offered to relax, take in the sights, get masses of photos to remember this precious moment in years to come or enjoy a picnic lunch with a breathtaking view of the highest mountain peak (4167m) in North Africa.

From Marrakech, you reach Imlil through the Moulay Brahim gorges and through the Asni valley in the heart of the Moroccan high Atlas. There, you already reach the 1000 meters of altitude. It is the promise of a little freshness and impressive views of Mount Toukbal.

It is the longest and the highest of the three folds that form the Atlas massif. It culminates at 4167 m at the jbel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. In the High Atlas, the Marrakchis enjoy winter sports and come to seek the coolness when the plain is consumed by the heat of the summer sun.

On the road to Ouirgane

Villages of earth totally preserved cling to the sides of the mountain of the high atlas along the road which, in rainy weather, becomes impassable from the passage of the wadi N'Fis. A rough and bewitching landscape. We join the road of the Berber village Asni a few kilometers before Ouirgane.

Charming hamlet, it is located on the edge of the National Park of Toubkal whose summit rises to 4165 meters, and is the ideal starting point for hiking in the High Atlas. The French Alpine Club has a refuge there.

Hiking tours, from two to ten or fifteen days, allow to appreciate, on foot, on mule or on skis, in winter, the magnificent mountainous landscapes punctuated with villages. The Tagherghout reserve, northwest of the Toukbal National Park, is the domain of birds - golden eagles, falcons, vultures - mouflons and wild boars.

Our driver will pick you up at the Riad at 9am. About thirty kilometers south of Marrakech you will cross the magnificent landscapes of the Agafay Desert. This rocky desert extends over several hundred hectares. Also called "Marrakchi desert" it is not a desert in the bioclimatic sense but it will surprise you with its lunar aspects with white and ochre tones. Lost in the desert hills that look like dunes, there are still some Berber villages. Panoramic views not to be missed - with the High Atlas in the background, the artificial lake of Lalla Takerkoust, the Agafay desert remains a protected and privileged place.

Then you will reach the greenery of the mountain and begin the "ascent". Passing some villages and the Atlas plateau you will discover the Imlil valley. The road to Imlil is a beautiful one. it is much cooler than in town, the Atlas Mountains are snow-covered, the hills are green. Perched at an altitude of 1740 metres, Imlil is the last village accessible by road before the ascent of the famous Mount Toubkal, the highest point in the Moroccan Atlas. Imlil and Toubkal from Marrakech

Imlil and Toubkal from Marrakech :  Your day trip to Imlil will start at 9:00 am from your hotel in a private vehicle for a 2 hours’ drive to the Moulay Brahim gorges. Then the Berber village of Asni, which is very popular for its weekly market. Thereafter,

 we will cross Imlil, a vibrant valley of greenery that stays fresh and lush even during the hottest days of summer. Imlil is indeed a small village located at the foot of the highest mountains in Morocco, including the Toubkal Mountain. Arrival at the village of Arremd (1843 m) located in the upper foothills of the Western High Atlas, the main path with streams and paths branching off in all directions for your lunch, which will be served in a Berber house. Then you can take a walk before returning to Marrakech.

Abdou was very prompt in his responses when I was setting up the details of the trip and was so helpful with his suggestions! We were able to tailor a tour specifically to what we wanted. We were picked up from our hotel in Marrakech and safely driven to Ben Haddou in a spacious van. We made lots of stops along the way at amazing view points and rest stops. The following day we saw the ait-Ben Haddou and did a quad tour which was so much fun! We also got to hike through an oasis and climb in old Berber caves. The next day we were taken back to Marrakech and dropped off at the train station. All meals were delicious and we even got to eat with local Berber families. They also arranged our hotel accommodations which were very nice. Our guide, Abdullah, was very knowledgable and friendly. The High Atlas mountain scenery was stunning and our stop at the Berber village of Taourirt with a stop at the weekly outdoor market and a walk through the village to the Taourirt Kasbah was our trip highlight. Brahim was a knowledgeable and generous guide, introducing us to his Berber customs and the history and geography of Morocco. He had a great sense of humor, spoke perfect English, and was excited to introduce us to his culture and answer our many questions. In Taourirt, a former caravan stop, Brahim took us to a fascinating outdoor weekly market where people from surrounding villages come to shop and sell goods. We were the only tourists there. After the market, Brahim asked us if we wanted to hike to the kasbah from the village. Again, we were the only tourists as we made our way to the Taourirt Kasbah. The mountain scenery of Taourirt was gorgeous. Once we arrived at the Kasbah, we found our first groups of tourists. The Kasbah, a former French government outpost, was beautiful inside. Brahim informed us the local governor, who was the French representative, was not popular with the locals. He lived in luxury while the locals suffered. We left Taourirt and drove through the desert to see the UNESCO site of Ait Ben Haddou. This village is very popular with tourists. Brahim brought us to a good restaurant for a delicious tagine meal. After our meal, we walked through quiet streets, stepping across sandbags as we crossed the salt river to the kasbah. Again Brahim enriched our understanding of this amazing place by sharing the history of the kasbah. The place, popular in many movies, was beautiful and we enjoyed the amazing view from the top. Brahim says he never tires of the amazing view from the top of the kasbah. If you only have one day to explore the country away Marrakech, this is an excellent tour to experience the countryside and culture of Morocco. Our guide, Ibrahim, and our driver, Hussein, are an excellent team. They were both very obliging and helpful in answering all our questions, but they also excelled at making our trip relaxing and enjoyable. With good humour and amiable, open minded generosity, they both provide the curious traveller with valuable insights with passion and pleasure. Their combined knowledge of both local and national events brings relevance to the tour and encompasses the historical background that delineates the mores from which the modern cultural tradition of Imlil can be best understood. The Berber market on route to Imlil was fascinating and we learnt a lot about the lifestyle of the many different villages who concrete at the Tuesday market. As Ibrahim was related to and is friends with many of the market traders, we got an intimate perspective of the whole set up. We now have happy memories of some very entertaining and comical interactions with some of the people who welcomed us, the only two non Moroccan's there that day. The hospitality was great, learning about the mint tea ceremony was fun, and the food was exceptionality good. The starter was light and refreshing, followed by the tagine which was the best we had ever tasted anywhere in the world, and the local bread delightfully fresh and with a texture ideal for easy consumption. The trip is very long and tirying but the bus driver Abdelaziz was so great to make us confy and giving us many interesting information about the places we drove through. The bus are new, clean and safe. Zagora desert has small dunes and is very close to the city. The desert guides were nice and the tents we slept in, essential but comfortable. Just a little disappointed with the food and with the "shop stop" on the way back. (The prices are unreasonable higher than everywhere else). They are good and trustable. Aziz was very nice to offer us information about the places we passed through and he is very friendly. Besides the fact he is a great driver, we had very nice discussion during the time we travel to Zagora and back. Definitely I will come back to have a longer trip in the desert and I will go again with him.
