Safari Park Roar & Snore

Roar and Snore San Diego Safari Park Sleepover Review

' data-srcset=

Camping at the Zoo

Ever want to do a San Diego Zoo Safari Park sleepover on your Southern California vacation?

I know it’s been on my list for a long time. The Safari Park Roar and Snore San Diego is an amazing opportunity to sleep under the stars and wake up to the lions roaring at dawn. Camping in a zoo, on an island, and in a national park should all be on your bucket list.

Admission to the San Diego Safari Park (formerly known as the San Diego Zoo Wild Animal Park) is separate from the cost of the Roar & Snore, and each tent option has different pricing. As animal park members, we only needed to worry about the cost of the Safari Park sleepover.

If you aren’t interested in becoming a member (or maybe you just don’t live close enough to make a membership worth it), you can purchase discounted tickets or vacation packages through our Affiliate Get Away Today.

This review is about the All Ages Roar and Snore San Diego Zoo Safari Park experience, although they do have an Adults Only Roar and Snore as well as an option for Girl Scout troops and School Groups.

Before your scheduled sleepover you will need to sign a waiver as part of the check-in process. It covers typical liability clauses, medical releases, etc. Be sure to read through it and ask if you have any questions. It’s pretty straightforward though.

Roar Snore Safari Check-In Process

You can view the full Guest Information (including packing checklist, menu, and map) on this Roar and Snore San Diego Zoo Safari Park PDF here .

Check-in is between 4:15 pm-5 pm and ends at 9 am the next day.

During winter, the check-in might be earlier if you choose the Jungle Ropes Safari upgrade so the Flightline Safari zip line and rope course can be done before dark.

We enjoyed the park from late morning through the afternoon, then exited to the meeting spot for the Safari Park Check-in. I don’t recommend going from opening since the San Diego Zoo Safari Park Sleepover is packed full of fun. You don’t want your little ones to be exhausted by the time your event begins!

At check-in time, head to Preferred Parking . If you arrived earlier in the day, you should move your car to park in this area (you won’t be able to park there before 4 pm if you don’t have the level membership that includes preferred parking).

There is a Safari Park “Roar & Snore Safari” sign . Bring your bags and check in with the staff. They will put tags on your bag and load them into a car to drive to your tent for you. Label your bag with your name (we just used masking tape and a sharpie) ahead of time.

You’ll receive color-coded wristbands which will help them distinguish which tour group you’ll be in later.

What to Pack

Camping typically means bringing everything you might possibly need or want, but this camping experience is more like glamping. The Roar and Snore Safari provides the tent, cots (depending on your tent option), chairs, and all the food and beverages.

You are allowed 1 bag and 1 sleeping bag for each person in your group. Pack clothes according to the weather. San Diego can be hot during the day and cold at night, so layers are a great idea.

There are bathrooms (full plumbing), but no showers , so keep that in mind when you pack your toiletries.

I woke up early on purpose to sit outside the tent and hear the lions roar, so our Rumpl blanket was perfect to have with us. If you’re planning on being in the tent all night, just your sleeping bag should be fine depending on the season. We went in September and it wasn’t very cold.

What do you need for the Roar and Snore?

  • Membership or Park Entrance Ticket
  • Bag with clothing & toiletries
  • Sleeping Bag & Pillow
  • Flashlight or Headlamp
  • Personal Medications
  • ID (for adults)
  • Sunscreen & Bug Spray
  • Binoculars(optional)
  • Blanket(optional)

Roar Snore Safari Itinerary

Depending on the season, daylight hours, and park hours, your experience may have different times or slightly different amenities.

You do not have to wake up at 4 am to hear the lions roar from their nearby lion camp. They were roaring on and off from 4 am for a couple of hours. We even saw the female lion roar in response to the male lion (who roared from a backstage area) when we visited the enclosure at 6:35 am.

It literally puts the “Roar” in Roar and Snore San Diego Safari Park.

It was amazingly peaceful to look out at the African plain and listen to the lions roaring while snuggled up under our Rumpl blanket. The chairs were provided (and located under the cots in the tent), but if you want a blanket, you need to bring one.

Safari Park Wild Holidays Guide and Review 2024

If you’re looking for an adventure to get your whole family into the holiday spirit, the Wild Holidays at the Safari Park does not disappoint. Included with admission there are…

Another note regarding the itinerary is that we weren’t quite sure what to expect, so I don’t feel like we enjoyed the actual camping tent area as much as we could have. Next time, I will definitely feel more confident eating dinner and then heading between the tents to play some lawn games after unpacking and before the nighttime tour.

There is one bathroom location available (with plenty of stalls) and lots of sinks for brushing teeth and washing hands. There are no showers.

Coffee and tea were available before breakfast , so if you need your morning hot beverage stop by the food area before heading down to the animal enclosures.

We were allowed to visit the lions and or elephants as early as 6:30 am . The rest of the park was off-limits until the actual park opened at 9 am.

The way out of the park was essentially another tour as our guide explained everything we passed, allowing us to pause and look as we walked.

Roar Snore Safari Tent

The canvas Roar and Snore camping tents have 3 Safari Park Sleepover options: Classic, Vista, and Premium.

The Vista Tent we stayed in overlooked the African plain and we had a great view of the rhinos and giraffes!

Among the tents are lawn game stations with giant Jenga and some toss games. The itinerary didn’t leave us too much extra time to take full advantage of this, but we also didn’t really know what to expect. Next time we go, I think we’ll be able to relax a bit more by the tent.

san diego safari park glamping

Classic Tent

In the Classic Tent option, you lay your sleeping bag on top of sleeping pads on the vinyl tent floor.

Classic Tent Includes:

  • Sleeping Pads
  • Vinyl tent floor
  • Size: 9’ x 14’
  • Price: $149 per person ($30 each for ages 0-2)

We went with the Vista Tent which has sleeping pads on top of cots . Still a vinyl tent floor, but this option also comes with electrical outlets , a fan, and a heater. If you’re looking for a balance between budget and comfort this is a perfect choice!

There are 2 single cots and 2 bunk beds . There is no rail on the top bunk, so our younger kids each took the bottom bunk while my husband and I were on the single cots.

The top bunks worked well for storing our bags since we didn’t have 6 people, although if you do have 6 people there is plenty of space under the cots for storing your bags.

Vista Tent Includes:

  • Cots (2 bunk & 2 single)
  • Fan, heater, & electrical outlets
  • Folding chairs for outside of tent
  • Price: $189 per person ($30 each for ages 0-2)

Get Away Today Discount Disney Vacations

Premium Tent

The Premium Tent option was sold out for the weekend we needed to book. I would recommend trying to book it 3-4 months early at least.

This is perfect if you’re wanting a true glamping experience. It has a Queen bed and 2 cots with sleeping mats . Like the Vista Tent, it offers electrical outlets , a fan, and a heater. In this upgraded tent, however, the floor is wood with a rug instead of vinyl.

Premium Tent Includes:

  • Queen bed, 2 cots
  • Pillows & bed sheets
  • Fan, heater, electrical outlets
  • Wood floor with rug
  • Wooden chairs for outside of tent
  • Size: 12’ x 16’
  • Price: $229 per person ($30 each for ages 0-2)

Roar Snore Safari Food

Dinner on day 1 was a buffet-style choice of hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, or BBQ chicken. You could also ask for a veggie skewer for the vegetarian option.

Sides included mac ‘n’ cheese, potato salad, sole slaw, corn on the cob, and salad.

Pretty good choices if you ask me. Plus, you could keep going back up for more- I love buffets!

san diego safari park glamping

Snacks & Drinks

Looking for dessert? Don’t you worry! Nighttime snacks included s’mores, popcorn, and hot chocolate.

With the large rectangular fire pit, there was plenty of room for everyone to roast their marshmallows. There were enough ingredients per boat for 2 s’mores.

Throughout dinner and snack time, there was unlimited soda, lemonade, coffee, tea, and water. Use your own refillable cup, or use a supplied disposable cup.

Alcoholic beverages were available for purchase to those over 21.

If you like breakfast foods, you’ll definitely love the spread supplied by the Roar and Snore San Diego Safari Park. We are talking french toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, and fruit.

Oatmeal was available upon request as were individual milk cartons.

Everything was delicious and made the experience that much better.

Roar Snore Safari Activities

There are multiple activities scheduled throughout your Zoo Safari Park sleepover. They are all amazing and make the experience completely worth it. This is in addition to the food, the snacks, the drinks, the location, and the ambiance. All while supporting Wild Animal conservation efforts from San Diego Zoo Global.

  • Africa Tram at Dusk
  • Guided Walks at Night

Bingo Game Night

  • Lion Camp & Elephants

Cheetah Safari Run

Animal encounter, african tram safari ride at dusk.

Starting off with an African Tram Safari ride at dusk was the perfect way to kick off our Roar and Snore event. Dusk is one of the times when the animals are the most active (the other being early morning).

It was the same African Tram Safari ride available during the day, so if you do arrive at the park before the Roar and Snore starts, hold off on the Africa tram until your ride at dusk included with the Wild Animal Park sleepover.

The tram was filled with only Roar and Snore guests, and the dialogue was great. We even got to see a baby rhino!

After Dark Guided Walks Tour

Our basic nighttime tour started at 7:45 pm (You can upgrade for a full Night Vision Safari Tour). We were all split into groups (indicated by the color-coded bands we got at check-in) and each group went a slightly different way. It was pretty cool walking around with headlamps and seeing the nighttime animal activity.

Our group walked through the African Loop. Some wild animals were active and some were hard to see. Our headlamps have a red light function, so we were able to have them on while looking in the enclosure. White lights were just for seeing your feet in front of you as you walked.

We got back to camp and enjoyed amazing snacks as listed above, then enjoyed a few rounds of Bingo! There were prizes for the winners, which (of course) we didn’t win. My family is like cursed at Bingo or something, but it was still fun.

Little munchkin got antsy, so we walked away from the Bingo game to look at the rhinos from the Kilima Point African safari overlook station.

san diego safari park glamping

Early Morning Animals

One of the big perks of a Wild Animal Park sleepover is that you are there in the early morning when the wild animals are more active.

We went to the lion camp as soon as we were allowed to venture off the campsite, and were rewarded with an in-person roar as the lioness responded to the male’s roar (which came from an off-view area).

Next, over to the elephants. We saw them walk in and out of the water, lift their trunks up, and walk around. If you are new to seeing elephants in a zoo, you don’t always catch them being so active, so this was a real treat!

Excited, we returned to camp for breakfast and then the main event: the Cheetah Run.

The Cheetah Safari Run was at 8:15 am. We lined up 15 minutes early and got a spot right off-center. If you want to be front and center (on the bridge overlooking the Cheetah Run area), then I suggest lining up 20-30 minutes early.

If you upgraded, you would have a VIP area with seating located to the side of the run.

What is a Cheetah Safari Run? Simply put, you watch the cheetah run. The trainers use this as an enrichment and exercise program for the ambassador cheetahs, which also benefits the guests for them to see first-hand how fast these amazing wild animals can go.

san diego safari park glamping

There’s a full explanation of their training program, what they do, how they do it, and then the actual run. It is simply stunning to see a cheetah run.

We were lucky to have 2 cheetahs run that particular morning (usually it’s just one), but little munchkin needed to go potty. We came back down the hill just after the second run finished. Gotta love potty training…

As if that wasn’t enough, they split us up into groups again for our in-person animal encounter. Our group got to meet an owl, which is by far my favorite kind of bird.

Seeing the owl up close, getting a good look at the head moving around and the wingspan was just incredible. Munchkin also got to have her questions answered: “How big is its tail?”

The Animal Care Specialist went on to explain the shape of the tail and how it acts like a rudder as it flies. Munchkin was so happy to have that extra attention- a pretty cool experience for a 5-year-old.

Roar Snore Safari Upgrades

There are also upgrade options such as a Wildlife Safari where you go on a truck into the African plain enclosure for a Cart Safari ride, or the Supreme Roar and Snore. The Supreme Roar upgrade includes the Jungle Ropes Safari with the zipline Flightline Safari, a Night Vision Safari where you go on a Cart Safari in the African Plain exhibit, and VIP seating for the Cheetah Safari Run.

The Balloon Safari is a separate experience and can be booked for before or after your Roar and Snore Safari.

The Overall San Diego Safari Park Sleepover Experience

Overall? The Roar and Snore San Diego was an amazing camping experience and we can’t wait to go again. It would be awesome to reserve a tent on the elephant side next time since we were on the African Plain side this time.

It’s the best way to go on a wildlife safari without traveling all the way to Africa for an African Safari. The food, the location, the ambiance, the activities- everything was more than expected and very well executed.

If you’re looking for your own experience, check out our Affiliate partners, Get Away Today , for discounted Safari Park tickets and great hotel deals .

After you get your tickets, book your Roar and Snore San Diego Zoo Safari Park Sleepover!

If possible, I definitely recommend upgrading to the Supreme Roar. This will give you an ultimate safari adventure with the additional Night Vision Safari and Jungle Ropes Safari with the Flightline Safari.

California Quotes

San Diego, California.

Best Areas in San Diego

San Diego city and county offers some of the best holiday destinations in California. Check out a few of my favorite areas.

Downtown San Diego : Located on San Diego Bay, this is one of the best areas to experience popular attractions and sites while soaking up the vibe of the city. It’s a top choice to experience nightlife and restaurants. While you’re here, check out North Park, one of the most vibrant downtown neighborhoods.

La Jolla : A fantastic city in San Diego County for a beach vacation and some luxury camping in California. It’s also the best spot for a classic Californian getaway thanks to the gorgeous beaches and a laid back atmosphere to match.

Encinita s: This relaxed beach area is famous for its surf and attracts beach bums and ocean lovers all year round. The small-town charm is irresistible and so are the stunning shores.

Ocean Beach : An alternative area where you’ll walk past tons of taco stands and crystal shops. This is an especially awesome destination for salt-of-the-earth travelers.

San Diego Glamping Guide – Yurts, Safari Tents, and Cabins

san diego safari park glamping

Sometimes, even if you are a rugged individualist, you appreciate a little luxury. For outdoors enthusiasts, that’s where glamping comes in.

Glamping is the perfect fusion of untamed wilderness and uncompromised comfort, offering an escape into nature without forgoing the plush amenities of a high-end vacation.

In this guide to San Diego glamping options, we’ll explore the best glamping spots scattered across San Diego’s sun-soaked coastlines, mountains, and deserts.

San Diego Glamping Cabins

San Diego County Parks and Recreation Department oversees a number of cabins in San Diego, located in park campgrounds throughout the county. To reserve the cabins visit San Diego County’s campground reservation page .

Agua Caliente Regional Park

Each cabin offers one queen bed and two twin-sized bunk beds. Separate restrooms are located near the cabins. No pets allowed.

Potrero County Park

There are two cabins for rent in the campground. Each has three rooms with inside privacy doors, 1 full-size bed and 3 twin beds, no bedding/ padding provided, a dining table and four chairs, a flushable toilet bathroom, sink, propane heater, lighting, and several electrical outlets. tamarisk grove cabin

With over 600,000 acres,  Anza-Borrego Desert State Park  is the largest state park in the contiguous United States, offering 500 miles of dirt roads, 12 wilderness areas and miles of hiking trails.

If you’re looking for one park that has many cabins in San Diego,  Tamarisk  Grove Campground  offers 11 cabins for rent. There are no mattresses/bedding. These cabins and those on Palomar mentioned below can be a great way to visit San Diego’s mountains when it snows. For tips on visiting the mountains during snow, check out our  San Diego snow guide .

Palomar Mountain Cabins

Bailey’s Palomar Resort  is a rustic resort on Palomar Mountain that offers a range of cabins, yurts and quonset huts.

san diego safari park glamping

The resort is part of a property originally homesteaded in 1888 and some of the historic cabins are more than 100 years old. This is a popular destination in winter when storms bring snow to San Diego’s mountains.

The historic cabins are rustic — think thin walls, crooked floors, patched together in places. They aren’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for that true old-cabin feeling they will hit the mark. The newer  yurts , quonset huts, tent cabins, and tiny house cabins are more recently constructed.

Bailey’s is convenient as the cabins and other shelters come with firewood (when there is a stove), linens, kitchens, and other amenities.

Yurts, with their distinctive circular silhouette and sturdy yet luxurious interiors, are a cornerstone of the glamping world, offering an immersive experience that blends seamlessly with the environment.

San Diego’s diverse landscape plays host to a variety of yurt accommodations, ensuring you’ll find a yurt retreat that elevates your stay from basic camping to a deluxe outdoor living experience.

Baileys on Palomar Yurts (Palomar Mountain)

Bailey's Palomar Yurt

Bailey’s Palomar Resort  is a rustic retreat on top of Palomar Mountain that in recent years has added yurts to its mix of cabins, tent cabins, and quonset huts.

Bailey’s is a popular destination in winter when storms bring snow to San Diego’s mountains, as well as a great place to escape the lowland heat during the warmer months. By our last count, Bailey’s offers 11 different yurts for rent in two different areas of the resort.

Stallion Oaks Ranch Yurts (Descanso)

Stallion Ranch Yurts

Stallion Oaks Ranch  in Descanso is a secluded campground and retreat venue located about 45 minutes from downtown San Diego. It is situated on 243 acres in a mountain-residential area and is nestled against the Cleveland National Forest and offers excellent views of the surrounding area. The property boasts a variety of walking trails, a walk-around lake, and meditation spots that are ideal for relaxation and reflection.

The ranch offers a range of accommodation options, including five 16-foot yurts and one 24-foot yurt, which are named after different types of trees. The yurts can sleep up to six people each and feature three bunk beds, but guests must bring their own linens. Additionally, the site has twenty tent sites located near the common areas.

Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Campground Yurts

Tijuana River Valley Yurts

The  Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Campground  is a 79-acre campground situated below Spooner’s Mesa, in the southwestern corner of San Diego. The campground offers views of the valley and connects to over 20 miles of trails for hikers, bikers, and equestrians.

The campground contains a nature education center, 51 primitive campsites, and is the first county campground to offer yurts, which can accommodate up to six to ten people.

This is a great place to explore the Tijuana River Valley, a unique and diverse ecosystem that is home to many sensitive species, including more than 340 bird species as part of the Pacific Flyway.

Alter Experiences

Alter Experiences  offers unique “glamping” stays in the Laguna Mountains, including tree tents and luxurious “bell” tents.

Alter Experience glamping

They operate out of Laguna Campground, El Prado Campground, and Burnt Rancheria Campground, under a license from the National Parks Service. Check out the website to see some photos of their setups. Inspiration will follow.

The camping cabins can sleep four to six, but do not have private bathrooms. The glamping tents also sleep up to six and also have no private bathrooms. What is cute about the glamping tents is that they are set up in a circle with each tent having a private patio and firepit.

San Diego KOA has a ton of activities, a pool and hot tub, playground, rock climbing wall, laser tag, jumping pillows, cookie decorating, surf shack shootout, movies under the stars and bike rentals. Ah, San Diego! What’s not to love? This incredible city on the southern coast of California boasts a beautiful climate and attractions to suit anyone’s interests and preferences.

A visit to San Diego offers a wonderful balance of old and new, natural spaces and urban environments, relaxing retreats, and fast-paced tourist attractions.

It can be difficult to decide how to best experience San Diego, including where to stay while you’re there with so many options. Glamping is an option that is increasingly popular in San Diego because it offers a unique mix of the best features of all the many lodging options out there.

If you’ve never considered glamping on your San Diego vacation, keep reading. I think you’ll be convinced! If you already know that glamping is a great option for you, read on for the best glamping options and locations to suit your budget and preferences.

What is Glamping?

The word glamping comes from a blend of the words “glamorous” and “camping,” though it is officially recognized as a word in its own right.

While the term itself has only been around since 2005, the concept of people desiring to experience the benefits of camping without sacrificing their favorite creature comforts is timeless. Who doesn’t want to be comfortable while on vacation?

A glamping vacation falls short of the luxury of a five-star resort hotel, but you won’t be sleeping on the ground in a dome tent either.

Beyond that, definitions of glamping can be a little bit fuzzy. On the scale between “glamorous” and “camping,” some listings will land closer to the glamorous side, and others will be on the other end of the spectrum.

Be sure to read all the fine print and details before booking a glamping vacation, checking that it matches your expectations and preferences. Decide which amenities are important to you and verify that they are provided.

Factors to Consider

Glamping

If this is your first glamping vacation, it might seem overwhelming to know what to look for and what to keep in mind as you consider your glamping options. Here are some factors you’ll want to keep in mind as you plan.

Sleeping Arrangements

Most glamping options are, by nature, on the small side. If you’re traveling as a family or a group, start by checking that the place you’re considering can accommodate the number of people in your group. Don’t stop there, though.

Check to see what the actual arrangements are. It is not uncommon to have a wonderfully comfortable queen-size bed with cots or sofa beds for any additional people. You may need to convert your eating or living spaces to beds for the night, which isn’t always convenient. Be aware of what you’re choosing.

Plumbing and Facilities

Even the most glamorous tent is unlikely to have running water and indoor plumbing. The main question in this circumstance is how far you’ll need to go to access the toilet and shower facilities. Are these facilities shared with other campers, or are they part of your private space?

Hosts are unlikely to promise glamping without flushing toilets and access to showers, but there are various ways to accomplish this. It may not seem polite to talk about it, but if you’re not comfortable with the arrangements, this could easily ruin your vacation. Make sure you know what to expect.

Climate Control

Many of us have become accustomed to well-controlled temperatures and humidity levels in our living spaces, and glamping isn’t always able to provide that. Many glamping sites offer heat, but air conditioning is harder to come by.

If there’s no air conditioning, check the weather forecast for the dates or season you’ll be there and make sure you’re willing to be without it. Also, ask if there are windows that can open and fans available for air circulation.

It’s the number one rule of real estate, right? Location is important. How far will you be from the attractions you want to see? Do you have access to transportation? Is it important to you to be as close to downtown as possible, or would you prefer to find a quiet spot to get away from it all?

Are you hoping to fall asleep under the stars and wake up with a great view? Do you want to hear the waves crashing on the beach? San Diego is a large area with a lot of different options when it comes to location. Deciding your priorities will help you narrow down your choices.

Who’s Going?

Remember the purpose of your trip and who is going to be there. An onsite spa tub may be the perfect little extra for a romantic getaway, but for a family vacation with young kids, it may feel more like an added danger that you can’t fully enjoy.

What’s cozy for a couple may prove to be awkwardly close quarters for a guys’ trip or girls’ trip. Your needs are different depending on who’s coming with you, so keep this in mind as you consider the amenities that would help you be the most comfortable.

Maybe money is no object on your glamping trip, but the reality for most of us is that we have to consider how much we can afford to spend on lodging. Remember that many attractions in San Diego can have pretty steep admission prices, so your glamping accommodations are only a part of your San Diego vacation expenses.

Glamping locations have a wide range of nightly rates, often determined by their location and available amenities. To avoid exceeding your budget, set some limits before you start looking at locations and only consider those that you can afford.

Types of Glamping

Glamping

Since glamping has such a wide definition, it’s important to establish the types of dwellings we’re considering when comparing San Diego’s best glamping options. This article will focus on glamping in tents, yurts, retro trailers, and RVs.

While you could argue that cabin rentals are a form of glamping , I am choosing to categorize cabins as condo or apartment rentals. Cabins are fully indoor options that can all but eliminate the “camping” portion of glamping.

Yes, some cabins are so rustic as to be a type of camping, but then you’ve lost the “glamorous” side of glamping. There is no shortage of great indoor accommodations in San Diego, but for exploring San Diego’s best glamping spots, the focus is on tents, yurts, retro trailers, and RVs.

Glamping in Tents

When you hear the word “tent,” you may be tempted to picture a childhood scouting trip where you tried to figure out how to slide the collapsible poles through the right loops, so the whole thing didn’t crash down on your head. That is NOT glamorous. I love a good dome tent adventure, but I would never call it glamping.

In most cases, you can expect your glamping tent to be a large structure, usually made of canvas or another sturdy material. It will be tall enough to stand up in. And you won’t be involved in the process of setting it up. Tents give you a bright and open atmosphere and help you feel closer to the nature around you.

Some disadvantages of tents are that they typically do not have indoor plumbing, the temperature can be difficult to control, and the soft sides offer less protection in areas where wildlife is an issue.

Glamping in Yurts

Yurts are similar to tents, although they typically have a more permanent structure to them. They are traditionally round, which adds a fun and exotic atmosphere for those of us from cultures that tend to build dwellings with corners.

Some yurts are built with a similar canvas material to glamping tents, although they are more likely to use more traditional materials such as leather or other animal skins. It is common for yurts to have an opening or skylight window at the center peak of the roof, allowing a view of the stars at night.

Yurts have many of the same advantages and disadvantages as tents. Their shape makes them feel even more spacious inside and adds to the feeling of getting away from it all.

Confirm whether or not there is plumbing and what types of facilities are available. Yurts are more likely to have these features than tents, but it is still uncommon.

RVs and Retro Trailers

An RV is also a great glamping option. RVs give you a solid roof and hard walls, so they’re up for just about any weather you might encounter in San Diego.

They come in a wide variety of sizes, so while some may be a cozy getaway for two, others might feel more like an apartment on wheels.

Advantages of modern RVs are that you have a fully-functional kitchen and indoor plumbing. They can be easily climate-controlled, and most come with both heaters and air conditioners.

You can often find a great glamping RV that is permanently set up at one location, or you can rent one to be delivered to the campground or RV park of your choice. Note that while this latter option gives you much more control of your location, it also increases your costs since you will need to pay for your RV site as well.

Another popular trend is to stay in a retro trailer. These are usually renovated for comfortable glamping, but they rarely have indoor plumbing or air conditioning.

Despite these disadvantages, the atmosphere of going back in time is an attractive choice for many. It is likely that your retro trailer host will have solutions to make sure you have a wonderful stay.

Roar and Snore Safari

Roar and Snore Safari

About 30 miles north of downtown San Diego is San Diego Zoo’s famous Safari Park. This unique glamping opportunity lets you sleep in a tent to add to the feeling of being on a real African safari.

The most basic level of accommodations involves sleeping on the ground on camping mats, but more luxurious options are available with full queen beds.

None of the tents have bathrooms but facilities are available nearby. Note that the price is per person and not simply per night, and a separate admission to the Safari Park is also required.

Hobbit House

Hobbit House

Ok, so a hobbit house isn’t exactly a tent or a yurt, but what category would you put it in? I had to include this adorable opportunity to step into a Tolkien novel and live like a hobbit. You’ll sleep in a comfy queen bed and wake up with amazing views.

The bathroom, complete with hot shower, is private but outdoors. If ever there was a combination of glamor and camping, this earth house is it! It’s 35 miles from downtown San Diego, so you’ll need your own transportation, but this unique experience is worth the drive!

Bohemian Poolside Yome

Bohemian Poolside Yome

This dome-shaped yurt (yome) is a poolside paradise for your San Diego vacation. The yome sleeps three people with one queen bed and one single bed.

You’ll fully enjoy the amazing San Diego climate as you relax at the pool or hot tub (which may be shared with other guests). Kitchen and bathroom facilities are also outside and shared. Get away from it all without getting too far away from all the things you want to do !

Funky Leucadia Yurt

Funky Leucadia Yurt

This glamping yurt is a true escape to an oasis of fruit trees and tall cacti, just a 10-minute walk from the beach. The yurt has a queen bed, plus a sofa bed. One great feature is its access to laundry facilities – perfect for a beach vacation.

Enjoy the small-town charm of Leucadia, or zip down the coast where downtown San Diego is about 25 miles away. You’ll be comfortable while also enjoying nature, which is what glamping is all about!

Glamping RVs and Retro Trailers

The retro rv by the sea.

The Retro RV by the Sea

This little beauty is also known as Miss Bettie Blue, and she is permanently set up just three blocks from the beach and only minutes from most of San Diego’s most popular attractions. There’s a risk of noise from traffic and the airport, but it’s hard to find a better location in San Diego.

Miss Bettie Blue is a retro-style camper but was actually brand new in 2019, so you get all the nostalgic feelings without staying in an old trailer. There is a small bathroom and shower, a kitchen, and plenty of modern entertainment amenities. You’ll want for nothing in the Retro RV by the Sea.

Jemma the Jewel

Jemma the Jewel

For an authentic retro trailer experience, meet Jemma: a 13-foot Scamp trailer from 1979. Jemma has all the basics, including a sink and toilet, a stove and refrigerator, and a sleeping space for four.

This renovated and beautifully decorated little trailer can be towed to the campground or RV park of your choice, giving you the freedom to be located anywhere you want or even to travel to multiple locations around Southern California.

Note that the rental fee only includes the use of the trailer, and any additional camping reservations and fees will be your responsibility.

Obsidian can take you off-grid or anywhere you want to go with all the convenience of a campervan and all the luxury of a modern apartment. A San Diego vacation in Obsidian will make you understand what all the #vanlife hype is about.

You can park Obsidian in any campground or RV park, but it is well set up for any boondocking (dry-camping) adventure you can imagine without sacrificing any function.

You can drive Obsidian yourself or have it set up and waiting for you at the location of your choice. Note that campground reservations and fees are your responsibility.

You can also have the RV set up and waiting for you at the campground or RV park of your choice. Just remember that you need to make campground reservations and pay the fees separately from your RV rental.

Jayco Jay Feather

If you’re glamping as a family, you can’t beat the comfort and convenience of a bunkhouse travel trailer like this Jayco Jay Feather. This unit has been fully renovated and decorated to lose the traditional RV feel and make you feel right at home.

You will have every amenity you’re used to, plus a few luxury extras. Arrange to have this RV set up for you in advance at the San Diego campground or RV park of your choice, or tow it yourself to explore the area on your own.

Don’t forget to make campground reservations in addition to booking your RV rental. Your Jayco Jay Feather owners can help recommend popular campgrounds in the area.

Forest River Wildwood

Another great bunkhouse travel trailer option is this Forest River Wildwood. It is beautifully decorated to look more like a luxury apartment than an RV. You’ll enjoy every modern amenity to help you relax and experience all that San Diego has to offer.

You can tow this trailer yourself if you want to explore the area independently, or your host can set it up for you at any campground or RV park in the San Diego area.

Just make sure you make a reservation for your campsite separately. Whether you’re new to RV glamping or an experienced RVer, you’re sure to have a great experience in this rig!

Best Glamping Options Side by Side

Frequently asked questions, question: is glamping a good investment.

Answer: If you consider a relaxing vacation or getaway to be an investment in your health, then glamping is an excellent investment. Many people decide to save money by skipping the “glam” part, and they go camping without accurate expectations for the differences between camping and glamping.

Camping can be an awesome vacation! But if you’re hoping for comfort and luxury to help you unwind while still connecting with nature and seeking simplicity, then glamping is the perfect choice for you!

Question: What is the Difference Between Glamping and Camping?

Answer: The difference between glamping and camping is the “glam” or “glamorous” part. Glamping focuses on some creature comforts that camping doesn’t always allow, such as quality mattresses, access to electricity and appliances, climate-controlled environments, and easy access to plumbing.

Many glamping hosts also provide luxury extras, such as spa tubs, fireplaces, and laundry. There can be a wide range of accommodations that classify themselves as glamping, but you can assume a certain level of comfort while glamping.

Question: Does Glamping Have Electricity?

Answer: Usually, but not always. Depending on your location, there might be electricity provided at times through solar panels or generators. Other locations are fully connected to the power grid.

Some glamping locations do not have electricity available, but they typically make this very clear and compensate for your comfort in other ways. If you aren’t willing to go glamping without electricity, verify with your host that there is electricity available before confirming your reservation.

Question: How Much Does it Cost to Go Glamping?

Answer: Just as glamping can have a wide range of amenities and comfort levels, there can also be a wide range of prices for the experience.

Budget at least $100-150 per night for glamping , but the larger your budget, the more luxury accommodations you’ll be able to consider. The fanciest glamping experiences can cost $250-300 per night or more.

Top Choices for Glamping in San Diego

The Zen Airstream Experience is hard to beat for comfort, luxury extras, and location for a budget-friendly rate. The small cozy space makes it an ideal romantic getaway for a couple or a peaceful and relaxing personal retreat. It’s absolutely my top choice for a budget glamping experience.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Roar and Snore Safari is a unique, bucket-list-worthy experience. Because the rates are per person, and because additional Safari Park admission is also required, this glamping getaway can add up fast.

Expect the top end of the price range for true luxury glamping comfort. Spending the night in a safari tent with views of roaming animals transforms your visit from a day at the zoo to an all-out expedition. If you can afford it, it is sure to be an unforgettable vacation.

Roar and Snore San Diego: The Ultimate Guide to San Diego Zoo’s Sleepover Safari

Everybody knows that if you’re going to San Diego , you better visit the zoo. The San Diego Zoo is one of the biggest and best zoos in the entire country and gives adults and children alike one heck of a time while visiting Southern California.

Did you know that you could sleep over at the zoo?

No monkey business here! The San Diego Zoo ’s Roar and Snore Safari allows you to get set up in a tent on the property and enjoy a night in the park not far from some of the illustrious and beautiful animals the San Diego Zoo is known for.

The admission includes the tent, camp activities, guided walks, after-hours activities, an overnight stay, and, of course, exclusive looks at the animals! Dinner, a campfire snack, and breakfast are all included as well.

Guide to Roar and Snore San Diego

If you’ve always wondered what it’s like after dark at the zoo, Roar and Snore San Diego is one of the best VIP type experiences you can find. Let’s break down the specifics so you have everything you need to know before booking your stay and counting down the days!

roar and snore San Diego

Booking and Check-In

Let’s put this out there first and foremost– the admission for Roar and Snore starts at $149 if you go for the basic offering, but admission is separate and required. In simple terms, you paying to book Roar and Snore does not give you admission into the park. You need a separate ticket to go into the park to get to the check-in in the first place.

Was this our favorite detail? No. But it’s probably the worst offense which barely affected the otherwise magical experience.

For us, it made sense to get all the bang for the buck and we went to the park bright and early to see the animals before getting to the campgrounds. This might not make sense to you if your little ones, or you, don’t have the stamina to be going for it all day long on an itinerary. If that’s the case, check-in starts around 4:15pm until 5:00pm.

Where do you go to check in?

gorilla at san diego zoo

If you’re at the park prior to check-in, 4:00-4:15pm is a great time to get organized and get over there to get checked in. You’re looking for the Preferred Parking Lot. If you parked earlier in the day, they likely wouldn’t let you park there so you’ll have to move the car to make sure it’s in the right place to stay overnight.

You’ll see signs for the Roar and Snore Safari. Follow the signs and the staff will be waiting there to grab those bags and get you situated.

We packed light because we looked over this handy dandy checklist that the San Diego Zoo provides. It also provides a map and the menu options so we know that we wouldn’t get lost and would have options for familiar foods.

When you’ve got some picky eaters among you, that’s important. Nothing’s worse than finding out your 4-year-old is going to go on an impromptu hunger strike and take out their hanger all evening when you’re supposed to be taking in the sights and sounds.

Lucky for us, we all found something we’d like and knew we’d be taken care of.

roar and snore San Diego

What did you pack for the Roar and Snore San Diego?

We followed the above checklist that the San Diego Zoo provides, but added a few items for our comfort. Here’s what we brough to make sure we were well-prepared for the experience:

  • Admission tickets for everyone
  • IDs and wallet
  • 1 sleeping bag per person
  • Flashlights
  • Medications

Each person gets to bring one bag of personal items too, so if your little ones like a stuffy to sleep with then you can bring it along with their bag. If they want a new one though, the gift shop sells plenty of great items to commemorate the experience.

I can’t emphasize the importance of sunscreen and bug spray enough. Remember– you’re in on an awesome camping experience around some of the most majestic animals, but they are animals and you’re in nature!

The bug situation wasn’t totally ridiculous when we were there, but it’s better to have it and not need it than the other way around! I promise!

To the Tents!

The campgrounds are pretty comprehensive. For instance, there are bathrooms with full plumbing. No digging a hole or finding an unassuming spot like in the real wilderness. San Diego Zoo has you covered so you can still enjoy a peaceful bathroom break even though you’re “camping.”

That said, there are no showers. You’ll have to wait until the following day to get in a nice refreshing rinse. For this reason, it’s pointless to pack shampoo and soaps and other toiletries that you would normally use in the shower. Just an FYI.

Now onto the tents!

San Diego’s Roar and Snore Safari provides you with 3 levels of tent when you book. At the most basic, you can reserve a Classic. The Classic tent provides you with the following:

  • 9’ x 14’ interior
  • Sleeping pads
  • Traditional vinyl-covered tent floor

The 9’ x 14’ is not particularly spacious, so you’ll probably be annoyed if you’ve got snorers in the tent. It might give a new meaning to “roar and snore” when you scream at them about it later! Just kidding, but you get what I mean!

We went ahead and booked the mid-tier option, called the Vista. The Vista includes:

  • 2 bunk bed style cots
  • 2 single cots
  • Electrical outlets, a fan, and a heater

So if you’re the traditional kind and camping means camping, then Classic is closest to that kind of experience. If you want a little glamping rolled in to keep the primadonnas in your party happy, then the Vista is a great happy medium. The outlets alone make it worth the “splurge”, although the price increase from Classic to Vista really isn’t too severe.

Plus, the location is better! Right outside, we had giraffes, rhinos, and antelopes grazing and looking stunning. It’s one thing to see this in pictures, but up close and personal it was something else entirely!

Seeing the looks on my kids’ faces when the towering giraffes sauntered by is a moment I will never forget. And I’m sure they won’t forget it either!

Seriously. You want at least the Vista option so your little pals can catch a glimpse of their new animal buddies any time!

If you want to take it one step farther though, there is a premium option, the appropriately named Premium Tent. This option includes:

  • 12’ x 16’ interior
  • Queen-sized bed
  • Wood floors with an area rug
  • Bed linens and pillows

That price increase from Classic to Vista wasn’t bad, and honestly the Premium isn’t a huge jump either considering all the luxury you get.

For the camping purists, you might really bat an eyelash or throw a full-on conniption because there’s a bed in the tent. I mean, a real bed!? While camping!? Sacrilege!

We were comfy enough on our cots, but the beds that the Premium guests were enjoying looked super luxe. Very, very spiffy! We did love that we had a nice comfy queen bed to fall asleep on! Next time we go, we’ll probably shell out for this. Our old(er) backs will thank us by that time!

No matter what option suits your tastes, everything is great. With a packed itinerary, you’ll probably only spend a little time in the tent as it is anyway.

Which brings us to our next topic…

roar and snore San Diego

The Itinerary

Once you’re in, you don’t really need to do anything. You can simply walk the grounds, play with the big board games like giant Jenga, or otherwise take it all in on your own. If you’re one of those super organized schedule-heavy travelers though, the Roar and Snore will keep you moving and grooving from start to finish.

Here’s what our itinerary looked like after check-in on the first day:

5:30pm – Tram Ride

6:15pm – Dinner

7:45pm – Nighttime Tour

8:30pm – Campfire Treats!

9:00pm – Bingo

10:30pm – Bedtime

Let me tell you, the Tram Ride after a day walking through the park was heavenly! Plus, my kids were fascinated with all the great run-ins with the animals.

Everyone was happy, and since we were all contained on the tram it was nice to let the kids take it all in while us adults caught up and chatted with some of the other families aboard.

Segueing right into dinner was a treat as well, as me and my family are always lively when there’s food around. You’d think the food would be mediocre since it’s at a zoo, but the buffet had many great options like BBQ pulled pork, hot dogs, mac n’ cheese, cole slaw, as well as veggie skewers and a great salad too!

Afterwards, we headed back to the tent to unpack, settle in, and watch the animals before heading over to the campfire at 8:30 for s’mores and popcorn. Or at least my kids enjoyed, but I was still stuffed from the buffet. My kids always impress me by both being bottomless pits yet stick thin. It’s amazing, their metabolism…

We didn’t bother with Bingo and went back to the tent instead to talk about all the fun we had and get settled into bed. After all, your next day features more activities and most animals are crepuscular.

In simple terms, that means the lions are going to roar their heads off as early as 4:00am. Talk about an alarm clock!

Here’s what the schedule looked like the next day:

7:00am – Breakfast

8:00am – Cheetah Run!

8:45am – Animal Encounter

9:00am – Guided Walk and Exit

Breakfast marks the official start of the day, but they let you visit elephants and lions first thing if you’re up for it. These are the best times of the day for so many reasons. For one, you don’t have the unrelenting sun beating down on you and there are no crowds to battle your way through. SAN DIEGO TIDE POOLS; GUIDE TO THE 10 MOST INCREDIBLE TIDE POOLS

More importantly, the animals are most active at dawn and dusk. Whereas your mid-day visit will often have you staring at a sleeping lion, they are out in full force at dawn, roaring, pacing, and sometimes eating their meal as well!

After breakfast was the Cheetah Run. Are you worried about what I’m going to say next? Is it an athletic event like a 5k through the park or something?!

No. You literally just sit back and watch the cheetahs do what they do best and run. The handlers let you know that its for their own exercise and enrichment, but seeing their speed firsthand is another true marvel of nature that no video can truly encapsulate.

Seriously, it’s super cool!

The Animal Encounter was super cool too, as they brought out an owl for an up close and personal look. Again, it’s cool for us adults but the looks on the little ones’ faces when this bird of prey is brought out just makes the whole thing worth it.

Plus, have you seen an owl up close? They’re…well, they are much bigger than they seem to be! Just wow!

Final Thoughts

We love animals and nature in my family. Some of our best vacations have involved getting outside, enjoying animal encounters at the zoo or in nature, so this was a delight to experience.

What the San Diego Zoo has done with their Roar and Snore Safari is take out all the more difficult parts of camping and make it more cushy so you and yours can focus on just relaxing, having a great time, and connecting with all the beautiful animals around you.

If you love animals, we cannot recommend this experience more highly.

Quiz: Which San Diego Adventure is Right for You?

Glamping Near San Diego

glamping near san diego

San Diego has a whole lot of great outdoors for you to explore. While there are hotels in the city and a few campsites scattered around the backcountry, the best way to go adventuring in San Diego’s wilderness these days is to opt for some glamping instead.

It’s an ideal balance having all the modern conveniences you could wish for, while also being close to some beautiful natural landscapes. Think fire pits and hot tubs.

Here’s our round-up of some of the best glamping spots in San Diego. We’ve covered everything from camping in luxury yurts to an out-of-Africa experience, and even the option to stay in your very own Hobbit house. Luxury and breathtaking nature await you!

What is Glamping?

You might have heard the term glamping but what actually is it? Glamping is basically elevated camping. A combination of “glamorous” and “camping” the trendy term has come to be a coverall phrase for a whole range of outdoor accommodation types.

The classic type of glamping is a high-end tent that has been decorated inside with homely, stylish furnishings. That means rugs, coffee tables and even the chance to spend the night under canvas in a queen bed.

But the luxury doesn’t stop there: the glamping scene has grown over the years and today there’s the chance to sleep out in nature in everything from a vintage horse trailer to a tree house.

Quick Breakdown of San Diego Glamping Spots

Glamping sites in San Diego come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. You could book yourself in for a night in a polished cabin on a well-equipped campsite, or you could choose to spend the weekend in a yurt in the middle of nowhere. The choice is almost endless.

The good news is you don’t have to head all the way out to Joshua Tree National Park either — there are plenty of top San Diego spots for glamping super close to the city.

One good option for first-timers looking to try out Glamping is Urban Canvas Glamping. This locally based company will come and set up luxury bell tents in your backyard meaning you won’t even have to lift a finger to have an amazing glamping experience. The tents even come fully furnished.

For those who are looking for more of an adventure, glamping in San Diego is straightforward. Simply find the type of glamping accommodation that you want to stay in online and book it. When you turn up to the site you might be greeted by the host or they might simply leave you instructions for self-check-in when you get there.

Glamping is still like camping, and you’ll usually find yourself out in the middle of nature, so it’s a good idea to come prepared. You’ll want to make sure you have appropriate clothes for the weather, enough food and drink and other essentials like bug spray. After all, you could be staying in a teepee overlooking a mountain, but it’s no fun without snacks!

Types of Glamping

Glamping might be a high-end type of camping, but there’s actually a long list of different types of accommodation options that fall under the term. Usually, glamping spots will be in a location that is close to nature and offer the chance to get off the beaten track but with a little more luxury than a simple campsite. Staying in a rustic cabin or spending a night in a cool tiny house can also be considered glamping.

To help you get to grips with the types of glamping in San Diego, here are the types of places you can expect to spend the night.

Glamping in Tents and Yurts

yurt camping san diego-min

Glamping in a tent or a yurt is the classic type of glamping experience. These types of places can be found all over the San Diego area and can range from large yurts and bell tents to tree tents suspended up high in the branches of an old tree.

You can usually expect glamping tents to come decorated with added extras and include comfy beds, seating areas. You might still have to use basic shared bathroom facilities however but some campsites do offer private facilities. The tents will usually come with a laid-back outdoor area, so you can sit out under the stars in the evening or enjoy a good old-fashioned grill.

Glamping RVs and Retro Trailers

airstream glamping near san diego

Glamping is not just about staying in a tent. Southern California has a whole lot of choices when it comes to overnighting in stylish RVs or sleeping in fun retro trailers. For those who want to have the use of their own bathrooms and kitchen facilities, these are a good option. Trailers and RVs usually come fitted with all of the modern conveniences that a tent doesn’t.

There’s also the added bonus of having more solid protection from the elements. You can head inside and shut the door against any wind or rain — something that can make staying in a tent really not so fun at all.

10 Best Glamping Options in San Diego

To give you a good idea of what to expect from glamping in San Diego, here’s a selection of the best options out there, from yurts to cabins and more.

They offer plush tents in forested areas of prime backcountry. These include tree tents that hang from the branches themselves, adding a whole other dimension to glamping. Naturally, this is a prime location for horseback riding, but you can also spend your time in this slice of the American west doing absolutely nothing at all.

The tiny home itself is situated in its own enclosed backyard, which has been nicely designed and manicured. It comes with a lawn, garden furniture, a fire pit, and even an outdoor hot tub. Perfect for evenings relaxing after a day of exploring in San Diego.

Inside the tiny home, you’ll find some cute design details. Think bright, colorful walls, vintage furnishing, and clever use of space. The stylish tents don’t have bathrooms, but these polished places have queen beds and bunk beds, meaning you can fit the whole family in. Linens are also provided, plus there’s a veranda with a seating area and a well-equipped kitchen.

On-site you can make use of the resort’s multiple swimming pools, the chance to sit around the campfire toasting s’mores, and they even have hot tubs. Elsewhere you can rent bikes, tackle the climbing wall or play a few games of ping pong with your family. Even though you’re camping, you won’t be cut off from the world: there’s Wi-Fi for guests to use.

FAQ about Camping in San Diego

What is the difference between glamping and camping.

To put it simply camping is spending the night sleeping in a tent, you can choose to hook up to electricity or go off-grid but usually you can expect simple facilities. Glamping offers a greater level of comfort and usually means arriving at a campsite with all of the camping facilities already set up for you.

Glamping often includes proper beds, plush bedding, seating areas and little added extras like fresh coffee in the morning and bathrobes.

How Much Does it Cost to Go Glamping?

The cost per night for glamping in San Diego varies depending on the level of comfort and the time of year. The more luxurious the accommodation choice, the more it will cost. Expect to pay anywhere between $50-$200 per night.

Does Glamping Have Electricity?

As glamping is a high-end camping experience the accommodation usually comes with electricity. That being said, it’s best not to simply expect the glamping site you have booked to come hooked up to the grid. Make sure to double-check if electricity is included with the glamping experience before you book if it is something that you really need.

Final Thoughts on Best Glamping in Southern California San Diego

Take the Family Glamping in Buellton, California

rv camper 2170

So, what is glamping? Glamping is like camping—but not. Combining the words glamorous and camping, glamping includes amenities and comforts of home (beds, electricity, indoor plumbing). None of this sleeping-on-the-ground stuff. Not that sleeping on the ground is bad; everyone should do it at least once!

Just north of Santa Barbara, in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, is the small town of Buellton, California. Perhaps you know Buellton as the “home of the split pea” as it’s impossible to travel Highway 101 without seeing billboards announcing Pea Soup Andersen’s. What you may not know is there’s a mecca of awesomeness for outdoor play enthusiasts hidden behind the trees: Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground .

rv kitchen and cabin 2170

FLYING FLAGS RV RESORT

Well worth the five-hour drive from San Diego, Flying Flags offers a variety of unique, fun glamping options: luxurious safari tents, renovated vintage airstream trailers, and adorable furnished cottages and cabins. Plus, everyone receives freshly baked cookies at check-in (as if we needed more convincing). The surf-themed cabins have kid-sized bunk beds, in addition to a full-sized futon and queen bed. There are even teardrop trailers in an area affectionately dubbed “Canned Ham Village,” perfect for parent/child bonding as they only sleep two.

tent interior 2170

For the ultimate glamping experience, we stayed in Safari Village, which consists of nine safari tents and six shared bathrooms (each with a private sink, toilet and shower). Safari tents feature very comfortable beds, air conditioners (heaters, if needed), a couch, TV, microwave, refrigerator, outdoor kitchen, covered patio table, and all dishes and kitchenware needed for cooking! Glamping in safari tents is amazing—a tenting experience I can get into.

During the day at Flying Flags, kids ride bikes and scooters (brought from home) through the pet-friendly, beautifully maintained property, swim in one of two resort-style swimming pools, challenge friends to bocce ball and horseshoes, and play on the playground. At night, families sit under the stars and roast marshmallows over a fire pit (many sites have their own).

If you don’t feel like cooking, grab a meal at the onsite Campfire Café or have a gourmet sausage from the Santa Ynez Sausage Co. airstream trailer—a cute venue to grab a delicious lunch and enjoy at surrounding picnic tables. Don’t miss the Flying Flags barbecue every Friday night (first come, first served), featuring tri-tip, ribs, chicken, a variety of rotating side dishes and dessert. Eat around the campfire or take dinner back to your cabin, safari tent or RV.

There’s no real need to leave the Flying Flags property, but there are fun things to do in the area that families love!

THINGS TO DO in BUELLTON

dragster 2170

Mendenhall Museum
I wasn’t an automobile memorabilia enthusiast until I became an “American Pickers” junkie a few years ago. The thought of checking out antique gasoline pumps and porcelain road signs just like Mike and Frank on TV was exciting to my whole family. The Mendenhall Museum is literally a hidden gem—located behind an unassuming alley fence. As soon as you walk through the gate, the fascinating display—one of the largest petroliana collections on the West Coast—is a colorful feast for the eyes! Every inch is covered with cool antiques, vehicles, gas station and car memorabilia, and more. Started over 50 years ago by the late Jack Mendenhall, the collection is now maintained by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Vickie Mendenhall, who live on the property. Even if you’re just passing through the Central Coast on Highway 101, it’s worth a stop. Reservations required—no group is too small.

bike ride countryside 2170

Tour Santa Ynez Valley by Bike Don’t even think about going to Buellton without exploring the backroads of the Santa Ynez Valley (even if you drive). Absolutely gorgeous! The best way to do tour the area is via electric bike. Not only are electric bikes super fun, but they make navigating hills more manageable. Pedal when you want, use electricity when necessary—it’s the best of both worlds while enjoying fresh air and stunning landscapes. As our family cruised around, we happened upon a family of bison—definitely a highlight of our trip.

Pedego Electric Bikes   is located in Los Olivos (about 10-15 mins. from Buellton). The electric bikes go up to 20 mph; therefore, you must be at least 16 years old to ride them. Helmets are provided.

Wheel Fun Rentals is a good option for families who have young kids—or who prefer to rent traditional bikes, tandem bikes or surreys.

ostrich farm 2170

OstrichLand USA
Have you ever fed an ostrich or emu? OstrichLand USA offers a unique experience that kids and adults will never forget. It’s a great stop for families and provides fun photo ops. Located just minutes from Flying Flags RV Resort.

Visit Solvang
Find Danish bakeries, boutique shops and Old Mission Santa Inés in the charming town of Solvang (10 mins. east of Buellton). Be sure to taste aebleskivers while you’re there—delicious balls of pancake goodness traditionally eaten with raspberry jam and powdered sugar. Yum!

Quicksilver Miniature Horse Ranch
Quicksilver Miniature Horse Ranch in Solvang (typically open Monday-Saturday from 10am-3pm) is a fun, free stop. Who wouldn’t want to visit adorable miniature horses? Get up-to-date information on their Facebook page.

WHERE TO EAT in BUELLTON

Pea Soup Andersen’s
 376 Avenue of the Flags
Feeling nostalgic? Stop at Pea Soup Andersen’s for lunch (even if you don’t like peas)—there are burgers, sandwiches and more on the menu. Don’t miss the highlights of Buellton’s history upstairs.

Ellen’s Danish Pancake House 272 Avenue of the Flags A local favorite for breakfast especially, you can’t go wrong with Ellen’s. Plus, breakfast is served all day. Woot!

Industrial Eats   181 Industrial Way Very popular with locals, Industrial Eats offers artisan meats, wood-fired pizzas and unique eats. Order at the counter and be prepared to share a table, as seating is limited. There may be a big wait during the busiest times, but it doesn’t deter locals from having a drink and socializing with “new friends” in the interim.

Bottlest Winery Bar & Bistro Unfortunately, this restaurant is now permanently closed. Got a couple hours without kids? Bottlest Winery is a nice place to stop for wine and appetizers. Experience the “wine wall” where 52 wines are “on tap” for tastings, half or full glasses. Bottlest also offers online participants (ages 21+) the chance to be a winemaker. Craft a custom wine based on personal preferences and design a label.

Learn more about visiting Buellton at www.discoverbuellton.com/trip-planner.html .

Glamping California: 35 Uniquely Beautiful Glamping Spots

* This article contains affiliate links, which help run this site at no extra cost to you.

TL;DR: The 3 best places for glamping in California are Boon Hotels, Sequoia High Sierra Camp, and Desert Rose Collective. Boon Hotels offers a peaceful escape just an hour and a half north of San Francisco, Sequoia High Sierra sets you up for a luxurious vacation among ancient Sequoia trees east of Fresno, and the Desert Rose is a quaint oasis for resetting in Joshua Tree.

As someone who has spent her fair share of nights in a mummy bag on the ground, I’ll be the first to say it: sometimes camping in a tent isn’t that fun.

I usually don’t sleep great, and honestly, crouching in and out of my tent can be challenging after I’ve tweaked my back hauling my backpack up a mountain.

So call me crazy, but I’m kind of into this glamping thing!

And if finding a California glamping location is a little daunting to you (there are so many!), I’ve even taken the work out of that (cuz I got your back ?).

Whether it’s a yurt in the desert, a tiny cabin in the mountains, or a treehouse in a vineyard, I’ve got a little something for everyone in this article.

This is my complete guide to glamping California, from north to south and everywhere in between.

Note: this article contains affiliate links, which help run this site at no extra cost to you so I can keep providing free travel advice and tips.

Uniquely Beautiful Glamping Spots in California

Glamping Near San Francisco

Wildhaven sonoma.

Wildhaven Sonoma

Cost: Budget

Uhm, glamping plus wine?? That’s a pairing I’ll recommend any day.

Get your Sonoma glamping fix at Wildhaven Sonoma , which is 20 minutes from over 200 wineries.

Wildhaven Sonoma has extra-large safari-style glamping tents that are heated, have electricity, and come in one or two bed options.

This is one of the best glamping spots in California (and definitely the Bay Area), so be sure to book in advance!

Read our guide to the best campgrounds in Northern California .

Get your FREE California Travel Planner – including printable checklists and my favorite two-week itinerary for the state.

AutoCamp Russian River

AutoCamp Russian River

Cost: Mid-range

AutoCamp Russian River offers a variety of accommodation types but is best known for airstream glamping in California.

This location is five minutes from the Russian River, with a 1000-year-old redwood grove within walking distance. Each airstream has a cozy private outdoor space as well.

Due to its proximity to the Russian River, I’d rate this as the best glamping in California for those who want to kayak or do a river float on their vacay.

Safari West

Safari West

Cost: Luxury

Safari West is, how do I put it…completely bananas, but in a good way? This luxury glamping in California is as close to an African safari as you’ll get in North America.

The location offers 30 canvas tents that directly overlook exotic animal enclosures. And before you get all Tiger King on me, yes, they have a comprehensive animal welfare commitment.

You can book a private safari around the grounds, and you can experience an authentic South African Braai (somewhat similar to the American barbecue tradition) at the Savannah Cafe.

I would certainly rate this as one of the best glamping spots in California for families.

Boon Hotels

View this post on Instagram A post shared by boon hotel + spa (@boonhotelspa)

Cost: Mid-range to luxury

If you’re looking for zen glamping in the Bay Area, Boon Hotels is your spot. The Boon Hotel and Spa is an adult 21+ location geared towards maximum quiet and peace.

They offer a range of room types, including traditional hotel suits, canvas glamping tents , and a “love bug” small teardrop type camper.

This is one of the glamping spots in California that I’d recommend if recharging and relaxing are your number one goals.

The glamping tent and the love bug sell out pretty far in advance, so make sure you plan ahead if you’re dead set on staying here.

Hobbit Hut Airbnb

The Hobbit Hut on Airbnb offers a truly one-of-a-kind glamping experience as there is only one structure like it!

I enjoy glamping in California through Airbnb and similar sites because I like having that very small, unique experience.

The Hobbit Hut is located in the Isis Oasis Sanctuary, which offers various spiritually oriented experiences and a wildlife rescue.

This is a glamping spot in California that epitomizes the crunchy Nor-Cal vibe.

Bothe-Napa Valley State Park

Bothe-Napa Valley State Park

Glamping in Napa Valley is a fun way to save your money for the things that matter in Napa – wine!

The Napa County Regional Park and Open Space District , which includes Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, offers traditional camping spots, cabins, and yurt rentals.

The yurts are more basic than some of the more expensive options; this is one of those glamping spots in California that emphasizes the “camping” portion of glamping.

Yurts don’t come with Wi-Fi or electricity, but they do have outdoor fire pits and are set in a peaceful forest in the heart of wine country.

I rate this as one of the best glamping experiences for those on a budget. If you’re interested in lowering your lodging costs, even more, you can check out one of their many camping sites.

Note: Napa is one of the most popular weekend trips from San Francisco . You’ll want to reserve a yurt at least a few months in advance since they book out fast (take it from our founder, Mimi, who has camped in the yurts here).

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Costanoa Lodge & Camp (@costanoalodge)

Cost: Budget to mid-range

Costanoa offers glamping in Northern California with unique tent bungalows that each have an individual floor plan and provide different views of the wide-open green property.

Each glamping setup comes with electricity and Wi-Fi and their premium package includes hot tub access, in-tent heaters, and maid service.

Costanoa is located in Pescadero, CA, in Northern California (aka right on the water), making this one of the best experiences for beach glamping in California.

I love the beach, but for me, it’s the bathroom situation that sells this place: the bathhouse comes with a 24-hour dry sauna. Sign. Me. Up.

Los Gatos Treehouse

Treehouse glamping in California owes its existence to the influencers who take adorable pictures there – but gosh darn it, the pics are SO charming!

This treehouse is built on a large Douglas Fir tree and includes a 400 sq ft platform with electricity and Wi-Fi.

Oh, and the entire thing overlooks the Monterey Bay AND is located in a vineyard. Does anything scream Bay Area more than this?

If you plan to do some wine tasting while staying here, you can read our full guide to the best wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains .

Mendocino Glamping

Mendocino grove.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mendocino Grove (@mendocino_grove)

Mendocino Grove in Mendocino, California, offers large canvas (sometimes called safari-style) tents that are arranged into several small “neighborhoods.”

The word is out on Mendocino glamping – they’ve been covered by Outside Magazine , Sunset , and Men’s Journal (and the reviews are great).

In case you’re not swayed by the reviews, the redwood forests , or the luxury tents, I’ll just say: they have heated mattress pads.

That alone makes it worth checking out Mendocino Grove next time you’re looking to glamp in Northern California.

If you decide to stay in beautiful Mendocino, don’t miss our detailed guide to the best things to do in Mendocino .

Nevada City Glamping

Inn town campground.

Inn Town Campground

Inn Town Campground has 25 unique canvas glamping tents nestled among a small village that includes a general store, a pool, and traditional camping and RV sites.

The thing that really stands out to me about this location is the price. Most tents go for about $100/night, which might be why most of them book out a few months in advance.

That said, now that you’re in on the secret too, you can start planning a comfortable getaway a few months from now.

Lake Tahoe Glamping

Zephyr cove resort.

Zephyr Cove Resort

Who isn’t looking for a way to spend more time in Lake Tahoe ?

The Zephyr Cove Resort offers an RV park and an Airstream glamping resort located on the beach of Lake Tahoe itself. Boom. You can’t get any closer without getting your feet wet.

Because of the exceptional location, it books out many months in advance, and there is a two-night minimum stay in the Airstreams.

Read our complete guides to camping in Lake Tahoe and where to stay in Lake Tahoe .

Yosemite National Park Glamping

Autocamp yosemite.

AutoCamp Yosemite

Autocamp Yosemite is located about an hour and a half from Yosemite Valley.

If you’ve ever been to Yosemite National Park , you know that’s pretty much as close as you can get if you’re not staying directly in the park.

It offers brand new Airstream trailers as well as canvas glamping setups.

And unlike some mountain glamping spots in California, located at the end of winding roads, Autocamp Yosemite is situated right off the highway.

It might not make for the most natural soundscape, but this is a plus if hitting the road fast is a priority.

Read our guides on how to get from San Francisco to Yosemite , our two-day Yosemite itinerary , and how to experience the Yosemite Firefall .

Yosemite Pines RV

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Yosemite Pines RV and Lodging (@yosemitepines)

Yosemite Pines RV has glamping in the Sierra Nevada down.

They offer retro-style trailers, large luxury cabins, and – the thing I would have found most memorable as a kid – Conestoga wagons which sleep six to eight people.

This is family glamping in California at its finest.

Yosemite Pines RV is located in Groveland, California, just over an hour from Yosemite National Park.

Yosemite RV Resort

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Yosemite RV Resort (@yosemite_rv_resort)

Yosemite RV Resort is located in Coarsegold, California, about an hour and a half from Yosemite Valley.

It offers private yurts and cabins as well as traditional tent and RV camping . The yurts are climate controlled (so crucial in summer) and sleep five or more people.

Santa Cruz Glamping

Camp Cruz

Camp Cruz is one of the glamping spots in California you should check out if you’re interested in a one-of-a-kind experience close to nature.

This is another option closer to the camping side of glamping than the “glam” side and is located in Santa Cruz, California .

It has two places to stay: an aircrete dome and a yurt, which both have electricity, and cell service but no Wi-Fi.

Each location sleeps up to two people, and there is an outdoor kitchen and shower area on site.

Staying in Santa Cruz for a day or two? Don’t miss our articles on the best Santa Cruz hikes and beaches (written by our founder, Mimi, who’s actually from Santa Cruz).

Carmel-by-the-Sea Glamping

Saddle mountain ranch.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Saddle Mountain Carmel Camping (@saddlemountaincarmelcamping)

If you’re looking for romantic glamping in California or a glamping spot near Monterey, check out Saddle Mountain Ranch .

Saddle Mountain Ranch sits on 89 acres of forested property near Hwy 1. It offers gorgeous cabins, luxury tents, as well as traditional camping spots.

One of the cool things I like about this place, besides the pool, is that it has a hiking trail accessible from their property.

Looking for more things to do in the area? Read our guide to the best things to do in Carmel and the best things to do in Monterey .

Big Sur Glamping

Ventana big sur.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alila Ventana Big Sur (@ventanabigsur)

Ventana Big Sur glamping might be the epitome of luxury camping in California.

There’s a spa and resort on property in addition to the glamping facilities, which are cleaned with hospital-grade cleaning products between each visit.

You’ll stay in a luxury tent with a queen bed close to the Pacific Ocean, and some of their glamping sites are hike-in only, which to me translates to having more privacy.

This is definitely one of the swankier glamping options in Big Sur, California.

Read our complete guide to Big Sur camping .

Treebones Resort

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Treebones Resort (@treebonesresort)

Treebones Resort is luxury yurt camping in California that strives to offer a quiet and off-grid atmosphere.

They offer yoga classes, massages, and have a pool and hot tub (honestly, I’d trade my phone for a hot tub pretty much any day).

Treebones Resort is for sure one of those Big Sur glamping sites you don’t want to miss.

Fernwood Resort

Fernwood Resort offers another Big Sur glamping opportunity, complete with a queen bed and close access to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park along the Pacific Ocean.

Fernwood Resort is nestled among giant redwood trees and offers an excellent family-friendly glamping experience or a romantic getaway for couples.

Santa Barbara Glamping

El capitan glamping.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by El Capitan Canyon (@elcapitancanyon)

If you’re looking to glamp near Santa Barbara, California, look no further than El Capitan Canyon .

El Capitan Glamping offers cabins, yurts, and safari tents so you can choose your level of adventure.

They’ve been featured by HGTV and Sunset Magazine , just to name a couple (seriously, they have so many shout-outs).

And even without the social proof, El Capitan Canyon offers one of the best glamping opportunities in the Santa Barbara area.

Ventura Glamping

Waypoint ventura.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Waypoint Ventura (@waypointventura)

Waypoint Ventura styles itself as “the vintage trailer hotel by the beach.” Each trailer has been restored into a luxury glamping experience, AND it’s right by the beach.

Also, each restored glamping trailer has its own lighted porch, which, I’m just saying, would make a great photoshoot location.

This is a fantastic glamping choice for Southern California.

Ojai Glamping

Caravan outpost.

Caravan Outpost

For Ojai glamping, there’s no other place than the Caravan Outpost .

This is another not-so-secret secret spot that features immaculate Airstreams and has been featured by The New York Times and Forbes as one of the top glamping locations in the area.

And if the New York Times and Forbes know about it, I’ll just go ahead and say this is one of the best glamping spots in California .

Paso Robles Glamping

Stay unhitched.

Stay Unhitched

Stay Unhitched is a charming camper RV glamping experience in Paso Robles, California, a destination for olive groves and wine country.

Each glamping RV comes with a queen bed (so mostly good for a two-person stay).

One of the aspects I like most about this location is the price. It’s one of the most affordable glamping spots along the California Coast .

The Trailer Pond

The Trailer Pond

Is there anything that says, “glamping Paso Robles,” more than a cute trailer in a vineyard? I think not.

The Trailer Pond got me with their vintage aesthetic. This is another excellent glamping spot in Paso Robles, California.

Beds are full-sized and the property includes five restored vintage trailers situated around a small pond tucked away in an organic vineyard. Yes, to all those things.

The trailers can be booked individually or as a group, which I love as a glamping party idea.

Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park Glamping

Sequoia high sierra camp.

Staying anywhere near California national parks can be a nightmare, especially in the summer.

Sequoia High Sierra Camp should be your go-to for mountain retreat glamping vibes.

The retreat provides meals and linens, but in the spirit of the camping part of glamping, there is a short hike to get to the camp.

One thing I really like about this glamping experience is the emphasis on leaving as small of a footprint as possible on the landscape.

Sequoia High Sierra Camp uses natural materials and solar-lighted paths. Oh, and another thing: it’s located super close to Sequoia National Park.

There is a minimum two-night stay for this glamping gem, and the prices tend to be on the high end.

Los Angeles Glamping

The cutest casita on earth.

The Cutest Casita On Earth is Malibu glamping at its finest. It calls itself the Cutest Casita on Earth, and I don’t think they’re wrong after doing all the research for this article.

The casita is a tiny, renovated vintage trailer with an outdoor bathroom and kitchen setup.

The entire space is snuggled in a shady and lush spot near Topanga State Park and Malibu Creek State Park.

Stay in Malibu for a night or two? Read our guide to the best things to do in Malibu , as well as our picks for the best beaches and hikes .

La Boheme Living

View this post on Instagram A post shared by La Boheme Living Event Space (@labohemeliving)

I know what you’re thinking – glamping in Los Angeles? Trust me on this one.

La Boheme Living styles itself as an “Urban Safari Tent Glamping experience,”  located right in the middle of Los Angeles in a private backyard.

The tent itself is a canvas glamping tent with a Bohemian chic porch area. And, as a bonus, there are lots of transportation options nearby to get around and see the city.

Also, the price is super reasonable.

I rate this as the best glamping spot in California that’s actually in a major city.

Looking for more places to stay in Los Angeles? Read our detailed guide to the best neighborhoods and where to stay in Los Angeles .

Tiny Tiki Retro Hideaway

Tiny Tiki Retro Hideaway

If you’re looking for glamping near Los Angeles, rather than right in the middle of it, check out Tiny Tiki Retro Hideaway .

It’s a renovated 1954 travel trailer in Chatsworth, California, with spectacular views of the West San Fernando Valley.

One feature that makes this stay unique is the option of a smaller trailer outfitted with desk space that can be used as a writing studio.

This is artsy California glamping at its finest – heck, I’d do a writing retreat there!

Joshua Tree National Park Glamping

Desert rose collective.

Desert Rose Collective

If you’re looking for glamping near Joshua Tree National Park, give the Desert Rose Collective a holler.

Desert Rose is a private campground and glamping experience in Morongo Valley. Rose has rave reviews as an excellent hostess, and her space is welcoming but not touristy.

The space offers a large luxury tent with a full-sized bed and outdoor dining and bathroom area, all right next to one of California’s largest national parks.

Visiting Joshua Tree from Palm Springs? Don’t miss our full guide to the perfect road trip from Palm Springs to Joshua Tree .

The Wonder Valley Yurts

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Wonder Valley Yurts (@wondervalleyyurts)

The Wonder Valley Yurts offer an excellent off-grid desert glamping experience with plenty of middle-of-nowhere vibes if that’s what you’re into.

That said, the yurts are still solar-powered, so you can choose how off the grid you want to be.

Each yurt comes with a full-sized bed, a cooler (however, you must bring your own ice), a hammock, and chairs.

Wonder Valley Yurts is located on the quieter east side of Joshua Tree.

Joshua Tree Tents

View this post on Instagram A post shared by JOSHUA TREE TENTS (@joshuatreetents)

Joshua Tree Tents has five safari-style canvas glamping tents.

And they’re not just outfitted with a bed and linens but also a fully furnished kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, water station, and a heater, plus utensils.

One of the big sells for me at this location is the pool. I’m not sure it should even legally be called glamping in Joshua Tree if it doesn’t have a pool, right?

Oh, and it’s two miles from the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park, so what more could you want?

Dome in the Desert

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dome in the Desert (@domeinthedesert)

Ah, dome glamping in California. The unique architecture, the one-of-a-kind furnishings.

Dome in the D esert has been featured on Apartment Therapy and Condé Nast , just to name a couple.

This desert glamping beauty offers lovely mountain views in addition to a full kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, all close to Joshua Tree National Park.

Glamping Near San Diego

The Roar and Snore sleepovers at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park offer after-hours African safari wildlife tours, a campfire program, evening snacks, and breakfast the next day.

They have different packages available depending on the type of group you have (and yes, there is an adult-only package despite the silly name.)

Despite the somewhat higher cost for this glamping San Diego experience, the San Diego Zoo is known for the quality of care they provide their animals.

I have it on good authority that elephants eat a lot, so the money is going towards a good cause.

Alter Experiences

Alter Experiences

Alter Experiences is an adventure company that specializes in crafting comfortable, close-to-nature experiences that get people excited to go outdoors.

The sites for their glamping experiences are located in the Launa and Burnt Rancheria campgrounds in Cleveland National Forest, so your tent is private, but the entire space is open to other campers .

The thing Alter Experiences is known for – and this is a first even for me – are their Tree Tents.

These are are nylon tents suspended between three trees to create an elevated living space. The tents come with a foot ladder to gain access through a door in the bottom.

If that’s not your thing, they also have traditional bell-shaped (or safari) tents.

Bailey’s on Palomar

Bailey's on Palomar

Bailey’s on Palomar is the last California glamping experience on my list, but it’s certainly not lacking.

Their slogan is “Camping isn’t just for summer anymore,” which I love. They have heated yurts, tiny cabins, and safari tents fully equipped with private bathrooms and kitchens.

FAQs About Glamping in California

oes it cost to go glamping

How much does it cost to go glamping?

The price for a glamping experience varies widely depending on the amenities offered, the location, the day of the week, and the time of year.

Why do they call it glamping?

Glamping is a combination of “glamorous camping.”

It’s called glamping because you get to add comfort items that typically wouldn’t make sense in a traditional tent or campground.

For example, a plush bed with a heater and AC unit in a spacious canvas tent.

Are there toilets in glamping

Are there toilets in glamping?

Most glamping experiences offer a flush toilet. Sometimes there is a shared bathhouse, or sometimes each unit comes with a private bathroom.

What’s the difference between camping and glamping?

While camping relies on a traditional, small nylon tent with a personal sleeping pad and bag, glamping often includes a large canvas tent with a full-sized bed, access to electricity, and climate control.

Why is glamping so popular?

Glamping is rising in popularity because it offers people a chance to explore the outdoors without giving up amenities that make sleeping and relaxing comfortable.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park welcomes okapi calf to the herd

The as-yet-unnamed calf will be able to be viewed by safari park visitors daily starting in april in the safari park's african woods area, by eric s. page • published april 8, 2024 • updated on april 9, 2024 at 4:25 pm.

The number of okapis at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park increased by one recently with the birth of a male calf of the unique species nicknamed the "forest giraffe," it was announced Monday.

The as-yet-unnamed calf, which was born on Feb. 18, will be able to be viewed by safari park visitors daily starting in April in the safari park's African Woods area.

The calf was the first born to Mahameli (“Meli,” mother) and Mpangi (Mm-pong-ee, father). Zookeepers say the young buck nurses several times a day and "likes to run circles around his mom and even playfully kick her once in a while," the safari park said in a news release sent out on Monday. "He also started taste-testing the [vegetation in his habitat], following Meli’s lead."

The safari park and zoo now share a total of eight okapi between them: There are four males (Nanoki, Mpangi, Upepo and the calf) and one female (Mahameli) up at the safari park, while the zoo has Zuri & Toby, both males, and a single female (Subira).

A reclusive species rarely seen in the wild, Okapi are native to central Africa and were discovered by Europeans in 1901. Although often confused with a zebra due to the black and white striped patterns on its front and hind legs, the okapi is actually the closest living relative to the giraffe.

Various causes, including habitat destructing and hunting, threaten the wild okapi in its native Central Africa, but, fortunately, "one-fifth of the okapi habitat within Africa’s Ituri Forest was designated as a wildlife reserve [in 1992,]" the news release also stated. "And since okapis are an 'umbrella species,' by aiding in their conservation, we also contribute to the protection of other wildlife that coexist in their African habitat."
