Half Moon Cay Bahamas Horseback Riding Review

By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: May 7, 2019

For many cruisers, a stop at this beautiful private island means a day to kick-back at the beach. For me, Half Moon Cay means a cruise excursion to go horseback riding in the ocean.

Half Moon Cay is Holland America’s private island in the Bahamas. It’s located halfway between Cat Island and Eleuthra, about 100 miles southeast of Nassau. While Holland America “owns” Half Moon Cay, occasionally other Carnival Corporation ships stop there, too.

Half Moon Cay Horseback Riding in the Ocean

My recent cruise aboard Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam gave me the chance to do it all over again. It had been a few years since I was last at Half Moon Cay and I wondered if the island had changed.

Despite hurricanes and storms, nothing much had changed. It looked the same.

Half Moon Cay Entrance

How to get to Half Moon Cay

It’s a 10-minute ferry boat ride from your ship to the island dock. After you exit the ferry, walk ahead to the island entrance. Once you’re through the archway, on your left you’ll see a yellow building marked, “Information”. Go there to check in for your shore excursion. You’ll also have to sign a waiver.

Half Moon Cay Information Center

I left the ship at 10:45 AM for my 11:30am tour. Sometimes you have to wait a bit for the tender to fill up, though once you’re underway, it’s quick. I didn’t want to take a chance on being late.

What to expect during your horseback riding tour

Everyone gathers nearby to wait for the tram to get to the stable. It’s a fun 5-minute tram ride and you’ll get to see a little of the island, too. I didn’t know it but it’s a very popular place for bird-watching.

At Pegasus Ranch, the “wranglers” greet and escort everyone to a shaded area. Once everyone is seated, the ranch manager Richie will come over, tell a few jokes, talk about what you’ll do and begin the safety briefing.

Half Moon Key stable manager Richie

After that, Richie points out the lockers and how they work. There were plenty of available lockers. The locker key is on a curly-cord bracelet so it stays on you even in the water. Next, he fits you for your helmet. The first one I chose was way too big. When Richie came over and saw it didn’t fit, he found a smaller one and did all the adjustments for me.

Next, we all lined up under the shade. As the stable hands led out the horses, Richie decided who would ride a particular horse. Then one by one, we walked over and mounted our steed. Then we’re off and…walking. No running, cantering or galloping allowed.

Half Moon Cay Trail Ride

As we walk our horses, the dirt path rises about 60-feet above sea level. Just before the descent, the ocean comes into view.

Half Moon Cay horses on the path to the ocean

After a five minute walk along the beach, our trail ride comes to an end. We dismount and are instructed to change into our bathing suits if we wanted to and to meet out front when every is locked up, including our shoes. No shoes, not even water shoes, are allowed.

Taking the horses for a swim

While we waited for our horses to be prepared for our “swim”, Richie offered us ice-cold sodas or bottled water. A special pad and halter designed for use in the ocean replaced the leather saddle. No pommel to grab! I was fine but there were a couple of first-timers that had never been on a horse. The guy in front of me was one of them.

Half-Moon-Cay-horseback-riding-steps

As soon as we were all ready to head to the ocean, we were off. The running came later!

Half Moon Cay Horses in the Ocean

Slowly we entered the water. NOTE:  For some reason, the horses tend to poop when they get in the water. Just a suggestion…look out for floaters.

This part of the horseback riding experience goes way too fast. Within maybe five minutes of our going one direction, the wranglers tell us to turn around and head back. The horses know they’re heading back and want to get to the stable asap. Not that they can gallop, but it’s definitely a faster pace.

Half Moon Cay Sherry Laskin on horseback in the ocean

It’s an exhilarating and exciting experience, for sure. I love the freedom of just being on a horse and letting him “go”. I’ve overheard newbies say that it was a highlight of their cruise.

As you and your horse slowly transition from sea to sand, wait until someone comes by to help you to dismount. Then it’s back to retrieve your belongings from the locker and head to the tram.

Quick interview with Richie

Take a listen to Richie as he briefly talks about the behind the scenes events for the horses and life at the ranch.

In a nutshell: Half Moon Cay horseback riding cruise excursion details

Here’s what you need to know…plus some insider advice. Keep in mind this entire shore excursion will take just under two hours.

  • If you take the late morning tour, you won’t have much time for the beach barbecue.
  • Wear jeans or long pants for the trail ride. I suggest dark pants. The dye from the leather rubbed off on my khakis.
  • You must wear closed-toe shoes. Despite knowing better, a guy in my group wore sandals. He wasn’t allowed to ride.
  • Bring sunscreen.
  • Put your swimsuit on underneath your riding clothes.
  • If you plan to go to the beach afterwards, bring a towel.
  • If you have a waterproof fanny pack , you can keep it on in the water. No handbags, backpacks etc.
  • You can give your iPhone to one of the shoreside wranglers or an observer to take your photo. Be polite when asking.
  • You don’t need to bring water. Everyone gets a bottle or a soda.
  • Tips are welcome. Simply hand it to Richie after your ride.
  • If you’ve never ridden a horse, tell Richie. He’ll make sure you get the best horse for a beginner.

That’s it! Get ready for one of the best shore excursions ever. If you’ve already tried this tour, please share your experience in comments!

Hi, yes, there are official photos taken as well as if you give your phone/camera to one of the shoreside guides. Or ask another rider to take your photo and vice versa. Have fun!

Hi! Are there official photos or videos that may be purchased for this excursion, and do you know the price? Do they take cash or card?

Thank you for your comment. I would advise you to contact the cruise line and go from there to maybe the shore excursions department if that is possible. Good luck.

Hello. Can someone email me? I am trying retrieve my horseback riding video that was never sent to me. Thank you

Hi Bert, Yikes! That’s pretty scary. Yes, there is some risk involved and that’s why we signed those waivers. I can see why a newbie rider would feel a little intimidated on the ride in the water. Sometimes the horses do clump together and I don’t like that feeling of being squished. I can’t imagine how you must have felt as the water saddle slipped and you fell in. Sounds horrible.

I hope you’re better soon. Thank you for sharing your information. It’s important to note that even the most experienced riders need to ask the ranch hand to double-check that both saddles are securely tightened. There’s a risk to so many shore excursions these days.

The staff was great and entertaining. Some of our group were feeling that they hadn’t been warned that this ride was as intense as it was in the water.

On our ride, the ride one way was uneventful but I was wondering how to stay on. I wouldn’t say they were swimming because you could feel them hitting the bottom as we moved. The horses were quite close together.

On the return, my saddle started to slip to one side and for lack of anything better to do, I hung on, eventually falling into the water as the saddle continued to slip. The horse kicked me as it went by.

Its taken about 6 weeks before the swelling has receded, but there is a big lump on my quad where the impact was. Luckily it was on my leg instead of my head or ribs which would have been an expensive trip home.

I’m 175 and I was told I was a natural on the land part of the ride but I do think people need to understand there is some risk to this event.

Riding Horses in Montego Bay Jamaica: Carnival Cruise Excursion

Cruising to Jamaica is an exciting trip, but most people will recommend signing up for an excursion, myself included, because Jamaica is not the safest country to embark on without experience. I highly recommend the Horseback Ride and Swim in Montego Bay, my personal favorite Carnival cruise excursion. To this day, we all claim that it was our favorite part of our entire cruise.

Table of Contents

Facts About the Carnival Cruise Excursion:

  • Cost : $99.99 / Adult and $69.99 / Child (ages 6-12)
  • Duration : 5 hours
  • Activity Level : Moderate
  • Minimum Age : 6 Years Old

What does your day look like?

Getting off the boat.

At Montego Bay, the ship pulls up to the shore and you go to the gang plank to get onto land. When you get off, there is no where to go except in this big building. You walk in and there are signs for all of the excursions offered. You line up in front of whichever one you are going on that day.

Everyone recommends that while in Jamaica, you do not go off wandering on your own when you port and that you do an excursion. We were going to explore once we got back, but were advised not to go.

Getting on the bus for transportation

Anyway, there are people there that will direct you to your bus, but make sure to pay attention, because the lines get crowded and it would be easy to accidentally get in the wrong line. They load you up onto the bus, and I am talking smack dab full, people sitting in the aisle. Then, you take off.

We had a guide that talked to us on the way there and told us about Jamaican culture and what it would look like once we got to the farm.

It was about a thirty-minute drive to the farm with the horses. There were multiple excursions that were on the same bus, so if there are people on your bus going to ride ATV’s do not panic.

Arriving at the farm

Once you get to the farm, you have time to walk around some and explore. There is a small restaurant bar, an ocean swing, the beach, and horses.

They give you time to go to the bathroom, change, and get a locker to put your things in while on the ride. You do have to pay for the locker though, so be prepared for that or prepared not to get one. We were not wearing closed toe shoes, so we had to rent some, but you could also buy them.

Closed-toe shoes were required. Then, we got fitted into a helmet and they put each person on a horse. They had stairs you walk onto to get on the horse, so if you are a klutz, like yours truly, do not worry about getting saddled onto the horse.

Riding the horses

They teach you a few basics, but the horses are so trained, you really do not have to do anything. Once you are on your horse, you go into the arena and walk in circles until everyone else is on their horse.

I know this sounds boring so far, but this part is actually really fun, because you get to see what horse each person gets, get familiar with your horse and riding it, and see other people mount their horse. Once everyone is up, you start down the trail.

riding horses in montego bay jamaica a carnival cruise excursion

Most of the ride is through a trail across the farm, which lasts about 45 minutes. There is a guide to every five people (about 30 people total) and they are awesome.

Our guide was so funny and nice and made our experience wonderful! He told us about the land, different plants, his life, the horses, the farm, and let us try different plants he saw or smell various leaves.

It was beautiful and you get to see so much of the land. I love nature so this was my favorite part.

Our guide was more than happy to take pictures as we rode of each person in our group, multiple times, so do not be afraid to bring your phone.

My brother also brought his GoPro and filmed while on the horses. This is a great option, because I could not take my phone in the water.

Riding in the ocean

Once we got back, they gave us time to change into bathing suits, because we were about to ride in the water. Then, they took about 10 people at a time through the water. You had to wear a small water life-belt thingy in the water. It was so fun and I did not stop laughing the entire time.

The guides were also having so much fun and it was contagious. This lasts about five minutes and then we were done. They helped us get off and we had the rest of the time to explore and shower if we wanted to, but we did not bring a change of clothes, so we just looked around, explored, and took pictures.

They also had professional photographers taking your picture periodically throughout the ride, so you could purchase these at that time, but honestly, we did not like any of ourselves, so we did not get any.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience and definitely our favorite excursion that we did the whole time.  After you are done, you load up on the bus again and ride back.

You have time to do something else if you want to, but we just looked at the little tents and shops of souvenirs at the port and then got back on the boat to eat.

Is this Carnival cruise excursion worth the money?

So, I am a really cheap person. Therefore, for me to think/say something is worth the money, it means a lot and it was worth the money. It was by far our favorite excursion and I would definitely do it again.

You got to experience the culture, people, and land all in one excursion, plus it was a lot of fun. I would say this excursion is for everyone and something all could enjoy.

Pros and Cons:

Pros are that it is worth the money, you get to see a lot and do not leave feeling like you missed out. You can easily document your travels, there are no hidden or extra fees if you are prepared in advance, and it is so fun.

Cons are that if you are not used to horseback riding, then your back will probably start hurting, mine sure did. They advertise it as riding through water and this only lasts five minutes. Much less than expected. And they do not provide any food, which is a long time without, but you get back to the ship in time to eat lunch.

What to bring and not bring on the excursion:

With this Carnival cruise excursion, there are definitely things you need to bring. Bring a change of clothes, sunscreen, water, snack, CLOSED TOE SHOES, extra money, and a water proof case for your phone/other valuables. Other than that, you should be good!

Download a free packing list for your trip by clicking here!

Again, I highly recommend this excursion and I hope that you enjoy it as much as we did on our visit. Our cruise was through Carnival, but I am sure there are excursions like this one offered through other cruise lines or opportunites to participate even if you are not cruising.

Wondering if anyone knows exactly how strict the operators of the shore excursions are when it comes to weight restrictions for horse back riding ? My hubby is 6' 2" and about 270 lbs - we don't want to book the excursion if he will not be allowed to ride

Any idea how we would fine out

If the limit is 250 don't even chance it. Why would you want to subject the horse to more weight than the limit?

If you don't volunteer his weight, they probably won't ask. My DH was probably a few pounds over the advertised limit for our last riding excursion (Chukka ride & swim in Jamaica), and nobody said a thing to him about it. They want your money, and they want you to be happy with their services. They might say something, if the rider was, say 300 pounds or heavier. But I honestly think you are safe at that weight, with his height to take into consideration. I'm sure they will have some bigger horses to carry the heavier customers. Perhaps someone else who is near that weight can attest to this from their personal experience.

As far as the horse's well being, trust me when I tell you that an extra 20 pounds is NOT going to hurt that horse. I have a (long) lifetime of experience with horses, and I actively compete in barrel racing with them. We have barrel racers who are probably at that weight, and their horses do fine in high speed competitions. Since you will only be walking along slowly, it will not hurt the horse. As I said above, they will have some bigger horses to carry the bigger riders.

Have the horses told ya that????

If all you can personally carry is a 50 lb box and someone drops a 70 lb box into your arms do you think that extra 20 lbs wont bother you???

give me a break.

Not sure where you are going. But if you are in Coz this tour is for up to 300lbs.

We would be possibly looking to do this in either Nassau or Grand Turks

We would also like to parasail - but it's the same unfortunate situation - anyone have any comments on the parasailing ?

Apparently the horse must have told you what his weight limit is or you certainly would not have responded in such a manner.

Lighten up!! (no pun intended)

And AMEN! I don't even know how to say this tactfully, but please have some courtesy for the horses. I can guarantee that these horses are not young stallions who are fresh and ready to go. They're older and probably aren't living in the best conditions and don't need some big, heavy dude on their backs. Please find another way to enjoy your time on the island.

I'm not going to waste time arguing with you and will not make another reply after this one. First, to your comment above, I'd like for you to remember that the average horse weighs 1000 pounds, making 20 pounds an insignificant percentage of his weight, compared to what it would be for a person.

Horses have been my passion and my life for 54 years. I have never known life without being heavily involved with horses. I know horses, and I know them well. Matter of fact, I struggle to schedule my cruises around my active competition schedule (barrel racing). It is not my point to brag about my knowledge and/or experience, but simply to assure the OP that a horse can easily carry a 270 pound rider on a leisurely trail ride. However, if the horse was thin and small framed, no, he shouldn't carry 270 pounds. But that type of horse should not carry 250 pounds either.

NO, horses haven't spoken to me in words, but YES, I have a very good understanding of horses, and YES, they do communicate very clearly with people who understand them. They have their own way of communicating with their people, and believe me, they will tell me if they are not happy or comfortable. Without this understanding, one cannot be successful in the type of performance my horses and I are involved in.

Final word. YES, a healthy, full sized horse with decent conditioning can easily carry a 270 pound, 6'2" man on a trail ride. Now, I must go out and feed my 10 horses, each of which I love dearly (and have a large financial investment in), and any one of which I would put my 300 pound FSIL (Future Son-In-Law) on for a trail ride without a second thought for their well being. His weight simply would not hurt them.

I think sometimes people are so busy being animal right activists, they forget that they actually know very little about the animal for which they are advocating.

I'm not sure if this is the case at your destination, but I was rather surprised at the type of horses on our excursion in St. Maarten. They were much smaller and lighter-boned than our Quarter horses. We were told they were thoroughbred stock and they did have that conformation, just smaller. :)

I would not worry too much about them carrying weight either... worked on a dude ranch where horses went up and down hills at altitude and it was never a problem. Most good ranches have horses of many sizes to handle riders of different sizes. While small horses look funny with big guys on them, we had one who handled one of our biggest riders who was at least 270 and the horse was barely over 14.5 hands... and still regularly gave that rider a surprize in spunkiness. *winks* I have also seen several larger men play polo and jump horses over 6 foot jumps.

They ARE far stronger than people give them credit for! all you have to do is try and make one move somewhere they do not want to go and you would realize that...Or have one fall on you for whatever fun reason. For a walk along the beach, it is a minor irritation to them to carry you along...Plus the saddles they use in most foriegn places weigh less than half what a good roping saddle weighs...

G'ma

If your husbands weight exceeds the limits set by the tour operator, he won't be permitted to ride. They do this for a reason, you know. They don't want their horses injured. Most of these horses aren't the big, strong variety you might find here. They are much smaller.

I suggest you find another excursion. If you go ahead an book horseback riding and they don't let him ride, you won't get your money back.

For a walk along the beach, it is a minor irritation to them to carry you along...Plus the saddles they use in most foriegn places weigh less than half what a good roping saddle weighs...

The tour operators set these limits for a reason. Why would you think it's perfectly OK? Those horses are much smaller than what you find on a "dude ranch" bucko. The people who own the horses won't take a chance on one of their stock being injured by a passenger who is over the weight limit.

FWIW, God made horses a bit differently than he did you and I. Draft animals (horses being among them) can carry a tremendous amount of weight without breaking down.

Note, I did not suggest that anyone should abuse an animal in any way. Just they they are different from us.

If your husbands weight exceeds the limits set by the tour operator' date=' he won't be permitted to ride. They do this for a reason, you know. They don't want their horses injured. Most of these horses aren't the big, strong variety you might find here. They are much smaller.   I suggest you find another excursion. If you go ahead an book horseback riding and they don't let him ride, you won't get your money back.[/quote']   The OP didn't ask for chastisment for wanting to ride, she just wanted to know if someone knew the weight restrictions. Do you know? So far all I've seen is animal rights complaints. I don't but would like to know as well. Try being a bit more responsive, please :)

While I agree they are smaller... I have ridden in Jamaica and Mazatlan and I am well aware of the sizes... American mustangs as well are small and far stronger than the average person thinks. Same goes for fine boned Arabians. And no G'ma, the horse I was referring to was smaller (or the same size) than any horse I saw in the Caribbean or Mexico...58 inches heigh at the shoulder is very small. No need to be mean here... :(

I would guess each tour operator has a limit, based not on the horses size but rather their general health. Some older horses CAN have problems such as arthritis or kidney problems. They can be unpredictable and buck and cause people to do thrown which is a liability for the stable.

That being said, how many plus size folks have clamored up on a horse insisting they are under the limit? A BUNCH I bet. The average stable does not have a scale and the tour operators would dare not argue. Am I advocating lying about something so silly!? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

I never stated not to tell the tour operator. I would hate to see a horse, or any animal for that matter harmed for the sake of a walk down a beach. I was merely agreeing with the fellow who was stating horses are far stronger than we wimpy humans give them credit for. Just ask my hip, now pinned with 4 lovely screws, all courtesy of the last horse I rode....*chuckles* Darned young ones are too spunky for me!

I would suggest either you speak to your tour operator and see exactly what the weight limit is... being honest is never wrong. ....BUT if that is not the case, find one who either does allow heigher weights or find another excursion. I would agree it is better to know and not be out the money and have that dissappointment.

I work in the office of a working farm on a university campus. Our equine teacher was in my office last week and we had a similar discussion. I asked her if she ever worried about overloading her horses and she basically said that if someone was too heavy that the horses definitely let you know. They even have a large man who breaks the wildest horses or works with the horses that have previously worked with larger men. There is a reason for the phrases "Strong as a horse" :)

I think that you may need to email Carnival or the operator of the excursion. I don't think it will be a problem though. Grits is right. 20 pounds to a horse is like five pounds to a man.

In Lake Tahoe they weighed you if they thought you were over the limit of 250. They said because of insurance. If you weighed 251 you did not ride.

We looked into it in Freeport and the place we were going to use has a limit of 200. DH is by no means overweight but @ 6'2" he does exceed their limit, we just decided to do something else. Have a great cruise :)

Now, I must go out and feed my 10 horses, each of which I love dearly (and have a large financial investment in), and any one of which I would put my 300 pound FSIL (Future Son-In-Law) on for a trail ride without a second thought for their well being. His weight simply would not hurt them.

I can vouch for what she is saying, because I have seen pics of her barrel racing!!:D Great post!! Looking forward to meeting you on our Miracle cruise!!:)

We did the riding by land and sea on Half Moon Cay in April. BIL weighs a little bit more than the 250 wt. limit. (He didn't weigh "over" when we booked 12 weeks before the cruise!) I actually felt a bit bad for the horse, as it had to walk/run in sand and water with his wt. I will say the guides "matched" horses and people, and definitely did a good job of it. I have been riding for over 30 years at dude ranches, or where/whenever I can, and must say that the matches were good. The horses they use there are retired Jamaican racehorses - which are used to carrying much lighter loads. They were well taken care of - no ribs showing, etc. Some horses were "beach" horses, and some were "water" horses, and some were both - when we went back to the stable/ring for the second part of the ride (water) some different horses were used. I have no doubts the guides would have stopped someone from riding had they been worried about the horse's health/wt load. The guides (at least at HMC) were very safety concious for the guests and the horses.

This thread reminds me of the Home Funniest Videos I saw last night. A very portly woman had climbed on the back of this horse. The horse took a few steps and laid down.. So I guess they wil indeed tell you when it is too much..

I had a similar experience in St Lucia. They matched people with horses based on the riders size and experience. We had several people in our group that were probably close to 300 pounds, the guides just put them on their larger horses.
