Before your trip even begins WV Experience works hard to ensure that your trip will be the best that it can be. We can help you pick the best fishing for when you are coming and choose the place that best matches your fishing desires. There is great fishing in our immediate area. We can drive a few miles and get to the remote mountain creeks or we can make a more extended journey with our backcountry adventures. All of our guided trips are custom designed. Float Fishing Full Day: Guided Fishing Trips on the New River

An unparalleled private new river gorge fishing experience.

The New River Gorge area may be famous for its whitewater, but it also provides amazing opportunities for prime fishing.

Exceptional habitats, deep pools, and swift currents make West Virginia’s New River a fisherman’s paradise. The boulder-rich waterways in the New River Gorge offer plenty of shade, which keeps waters cool to attract fish. It’s not uncommon to reel in dozens of fish in just one day spent on the New River!

Guided New River Gorge Smallmouth Fishing

This adventure is a guided full-day float fishing trip. You’ll get started early in the morning, giving you the chance to make the most of prime hours for smallmouth bass fishing. We’ll float down up to 12 miles of the New River.

Our experienced New River Gorge fishing guides know the river inside and out and will show you the best places on the New River to fish. Our guides are some of the best-trained out of any resorts in the area.

What’s included.

We’ll provide everything you need to have a great day of fishing in the New River Gorge area of West Virginia, one of the area’s best-kept fishing spots! This includes tackle, rods, reels, plastic bait, plus flies and fly rods if specified. We also bring lunch, snacks, and beverages. 

If you prefer to use your own fishing gear, feel free to bring a rod, hard bait, crank baits, plugs, or minnows. Transportation to and from the river will also be provided.

Looking to take a fishing vacation in the New River Gorge Area? We also offer comfortable accommodations at our resort . While a resort stay is not included as part of this fishing trip, many people who choose to fish the New River also want to take advantage of our many other adventures for a unique and fun-filled experience.

What to Wear and Bring

Fishing the New River, West Virgina, like elsewhere in the state, requires a license.

You’re responsible for obtaining and bringing your West Virginia fishing license, which you’ll need to show your fishing guide before the trip. 

We also recommend bringing sunscreen and weather-appropriate clothes, including rain gear, warm layers, sunglasses, and a hat.

This is a full-day trip, with approximately eight hours spent on the river. All day trips depart during early morning.

Requirements and Limits

The minimum age for this adventure is eight years old. You must have a current West Virginia fishing license, which you’ll need to show your guide during check in. All fishing trips are catch and release with artificial baits only. Consult with your physician before attempting any new activity.

Your fishing guide will discuss all specific safety requirements on site before fishing the New River Gorge. Our guides know this river better than anybody, and they’ll help you with bait or fly selection and where to cast, plus instruction if necessary.

Fly fishing is rapidly becoming the fishing style of choice for many anglers, and as the "Birthplace of Rivers," Pocahontas County WV offers some of the best fly fishing on the east coast.

Fly fishing has many different facets. The stream just outside our door is the Old Field Fork, one of the headwaters of the Elk River. But West Virginia Fly Fishing on the Greenbrier, Williams, and Cranberry River is a memorable experience as well. Each river requires a different style and different flies and you'll come to respect and enjoy the challenge each river presents. For fishing near Elkins WV, we are located in the beautiful Monongahela National Forest and are the best outfitter and West Virginia Fishing school in the region.

Elk River Fly Fishing School

An excellent option for the beginning angler who is very serious about increasing their skill level.

Two full days of guided fishing and 2 nights lodging. This can be any two days, mid week or weekend.

After reviewing your skills, you will check your equipment and then begin casting and working one on one with your guide/instructor. Casting techniques covered include: roll cast, roll cast pickup, pick up and lay down, false casting and shooting line. We will then move toward the stream and discuss reading the water and how it affects your fly line. Your second day starts with coffee on the deck overlooking the Elk River headwaters and the rolling Pleasant Valley. The day begins with a how-to on reading water, current and fish approach options. As we fish the river, the focus will be on sight casting, nymphs near the bottom and making wading techniques safe and efficient. The afternoon will be spent identifying basic stream and river insects. As the late afternoon hatch begins, you'll be ready for action.

Elk River Fly Fishing Package

A great gift for the advanced beginner, upper level intermediate or advanced angler who wants to have the very best guided fishing experience that is offered in the Mountain State.

You will be fishing on the very best streams that the area has to offer. Our guides will go out of their way to keep you away from crowded streams. In some cases, you won't see another angler! If you are interested in West Virginia Trout Fishing for wild Browns, Rainbows or Brooks, this is the trip for you. We can stay on naturally producing streams and rivers if that's your preference. This package can be mid week or weekend and includes lunches for two full days of guided fishing, flies (usually tied by your guide) and Elk River cabin lodging. Wild Brook Trout Trips

Elk River guide service offers a unique brookie trip that will challenge even the hardiest angler. We'll stalk the wild brooks that have been here since the Ice Age 20,000 years ago.

Brooks are strong & resilient and have survived the cutting of the virgin forest in the late 1890's, the introduction of the German Brown trout and Western Rainbows, and the coal mining that took place on a small level here in the 1940s. The best West Virginia Trout Fishing brookie steams are found in remote mountain valleys and steep drainages that require skill & stamina to find and fish successfully. Our county boasts the best brookie fisheries that the Mid Atlantic region has to offer. This is possible due to the large amount of WV state forest and federally owned Monongahela National forest land (64% of county acreage) which can't be logged and developed like other areas in the region. Want to learn the popular fly fishing technique of European or 'Euro' Nymphing? Our guides will share their experience and are happy to share the secrets of the techniques. European Nymphing is used in competition fly fishing as it yields high numbers of fish to the net, typically improving your odds! Using longer rods and lighter tippet, it gives you more feel, making the sensations of catching fish so much more enhanced. Speciality gear is provided with this trip if needed. $379/ 6 hour day

Musky Fishing Fly or Spin

Musky fishing has become one of the more popular pursuits among local fly anglers in recent years. Known as the fish of 10,000 casts, these long, fickle fish can be spooky to the point of insanity. Our region offers several outstanding options with a healthy strong population of these toothy critters . Our staff loves to put you on a trophy fish . This offering isn't for the faint of heart. Anglers should possess the ability to cast a 10-12 weight fly rod with sinking line and an 8"-12" for a big part of a day. For those who don't fly fish, we also offer conventional tackle trips. This is a float trip and the cost is 595.00 for 1 and 695.00 for 2 anglers .

Meet The Guides

Meet James Crews, owner of Mountain Water Adventures.  I am a licensed outfitter in West Virginia and a certified casting instructor and guide.  I’ve been hunting and fishing these woods and waters all my life.  For over 20 years, I managed the Outfitters, Gun Club, and  Equestrian at The Greenbrier Resort.

James is an incredible fisherman and teacher and loves to teach anyone the skills it takes to become a great fisherman.

Clare Lyons is a guide for Mountain Water Adventures. He is from Hinton, West Virginia and worked at the Greenbrier Resort as a fishing guide prior to taking on his position at MWA. Clare loves to hunt when he’s isn’t fishing, and enjoys teaching anyone all the skills it takes to become a great fisherman.

Clare Lyons is one of the leading fly fishing guides in the country.  His fishing skills and people skills are top shelf. Mountain Water Adventures provides rare fly fishing locations in southeastern West Virginia, and Clare Lyons can also take you out on the New River for Musky! Clare grew up on the New River in the family taxidermy business, where he learned at an early age to love the water and fishing.
