Your Time to Fly

Plan your University of Colorado Boulder Visit

Plan a visit to University of Colorado Boulder

The University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder for short), is home to over 33,000 students. It is easy to see why so many are drawn to this laid-back mountain town, nestled in the foothills of the Flatiron Mountains. If CU Boulder is on your college list, use this guide to plan a visit to the University of Colorado Boulder.

Located just 30 minutes northwest of Denver, Boulder is a hip city with a cute downtown and was dubbed “America’s Foodiest Town” by Bon Appetít . Boulder is also a great destination for those seeking outdoor adventures, from hiking and mountain and road biking to stand-up paddleboarding and rock climbing.

Getting to University of Colorado Boulder

If you are flying into Denver International Airport, you can rent a car and drive 45 minutes up to Boulder. However, if you (or your student) need public transportation, CU Boulder is an hour away from the Denver International Airport (DIA) via the  RTD SkyRide bus service.

There are also other affordable options such as shared-ride service shuttles , which pick-up and drop-off from Jeppesen Terminal Level 5, island 5, outside doors 505-507 (east side) and 510-512 (west side). For those that prefer rideshare services, an Uber will cost about $78 one way.

Taking a Tour of University of Colorado Boulder

You need to register in advance for University of Colorado Boulder tours , and spots fill up quickly so be sure to secure your spot before booking your travel. Luckily, CU Boulder is not a closed campus, so you can also always visit and self-tour the campus, you just won’t be able to go inside any of the buildings.

Norlin Library at CU Boulder

Make sure to walk past the Center for Community, with its extensive dining hall and 10 micro-restaurants; Old Main, the first building on campus; the Case Center; University Memorial Center; Norlin Library; the Recreational Center; Fiske Planetarium (you may also notice the solar system model throughout campus); Macky Auditorium; and Farrand Field, where the students like to hang out.

Of course, CU Boulder is a great sports school, so you have to walk around Folsom Field and rub the horn on the statue of Ralphie, the renowned Buffalo mascot.

Embassy Suites by Hilton in Boulder Colorado exterior

Since you are visiting Boulder for a campus visit, you will want to pick accommodations close to the school. If you want to be within walking distance, I’d recommend either the Boulder Marriott Hotel and Spa , Residence Inn Boulder Canyon Boulevard , Hilton Garden Inn Boulder , or the Embassy Suites by Hilton Boulder .

For our first visit, we decided to use some Hilton points to book a one-bedroom suite with a balcony and mountain view at the Embassy Suites. I expected the typical dated Embassy Suites with a pyramid-like atrium and decor from the 1990s, but I was very pleasantly surprised by the Boulder property. It was modern and fresh, with beautiful views over Boulder and the Flatiron Mountains.

Every two-room suite has a private bedroom and separate living room with a sofa bed and dining table and includes an HDTV, Keurig coffee-maker, refrigerator, microwave, and complimentary WiFi along with hydration stations on every floor. The hotel includes a free made-to-order breakfast and an evening reception with drinks and snacks in the Brickstones Kitchen & Bar. The suite setup was perfect when traveling with a young adult, giving everyone privacy without requiring two room reservations. The free breakfast, including hot breakfast sandwiches, fruit, yogurt, juice, coffee, and snacks was also a money saver.

On our second visit, we stayed next door at the Hilton Garden Inn Boulder. Also a new property, we enjoyed the fresh new decor and the community spaces in the lobby for working, studying, or relaxing. Located right off of 28th Street/ Route 36, it is a convenient spot for exploring or walking to campus.

Where to Eat in Boulder

Tacos at Santo Boulder

Boulder’s downtown Pearl Street was ranked among  Food & Wine’s  10 Best Foodie Streets in America. With 22 craft breweries and a burgeoning wine and spirits industry, Boulder’s food and drink scene is hopping. For Food Network fans, “Top Chef” winner Hosea Rosenburg has two restaurants in Boulder — Blackbelly and Santo. Cafe Aion’s chef/owner Dakota Soifer was a winner on Food Network’s “Cutthroat Kitchen.”

Frasca Food and Wine have earned a James Beard award, and the less expensive Pizzeria Locale next door is owned by the same people. For casual dining with your teen, the food trucks park at the Rayback Collective, where you will find indoor and outdoor seating, yard games, a stage for live music.

Two places that I would highly recommend are Oak at Fourteenth and Santo. Oak at Fourteenth is a stylish neighborhood restaurant off Pearl Street featuring local and seasonal New American cuisine. The clean style and open kitchen are warm and inviting, and the wood-scented aromas from the oven and grill will whet your appetite. The food is innovative and full of flavor. I’d recommend the olive-oil whipped ricotta appetizer and either the wild mushroom and potato gnocchi or the Piri Piri roast half-chicken.

You will need a car or an Uber to get to the next recommendation, but dinner at Santo is well worth the short drive and disregard the strip mall setting. Once you walk in you can appreciate the New Mexican-influenced design, from the light fixture that resembles the NM state flag, to the artwork and the use of natural materials. The big question when choosing from the menu is whether you want green, red, or Christmas (both kinds of chilis — personally I’m a fan of green!)

For a more casual dinner, try Post Chicken and Beer in the Pearl Street Mall area. Known for its fried chicken and craft beer, this is a perfect spot to bring a potential college student. We recommend the chicken thigh fries with curry ketchup!

Egg skillet breakfast at the Buff in Boulder

A must-try for breakfast is Boulder is The Buff . You may need to wait in line but you need time to build up an appetite for the giant portions (I’m sure it makes a great hangover remedy!)

Things to do Near CU Boulder

Male snowshoeing through Rocky Mountain National Park

The University of Colorado Boulder is a great choice for outdoor lovers. The school is only an hour from the Estes Park entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, where you can enjoy hiking, biking, winter sports like snowshoeing, fishing, and horseback riding. Just be sure to check out the Park’s website before you go to check for road closures or to see if day pass reservations are required.

If you are looking for a guided hike, I strongly recommend Rewilding Expeditions . The owner Nick is a former park ranger in Rocky Mountain National Park and extremely knowledgeable about the park and dedicated to conservation.

Chataugua Park in Boulder

If you don’t want to go that far, take a hike on one of the many trails that start at the Chautauqua Trailhead, many of which will offer great views of the campus from above. Another great scenic overlook is Panorama Point on Flagstaff Road. The Boulder Creek Path, which runs through town and campus along a babbling creek, is also a good place to bike, jog, skate and walk.

Pearl Street Mall in Boulder

Downtown, you will want to stroll through the Pearl Street pedestrian mall, take a downtown walking tour, check out the goods at the Boulder Farmer’s Market, or pop into the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art.

If you are a tea fan, you may want to check out the Celestial Seasonings Factory tour and then refresh at the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse.

Fascinated by weather? Stop in for a tour of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Visitor Center for an informative view of weather, climate, and the broad spectrum of atmospheric research at a world-class laboratory. After the tour, head outdoors on the Walter Orr Roberts Weather Trail, or take a longer hike on one of the extensive trails in the 40,000+ acre Boulder Open Space area.

Of course, if you are looking for other day trip options, from Boulder you are only 30 minutes from Denver and 40 minutes from the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, where you can go climb the amphitheater steps, hike a network of trails, or visit the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

One hour away you can reach the otherworldly landscape of Roxborough State Park , where you can hike among the slanting ochre sandstone formations, watch for wildlife, and spot wildflowers alongside the trails.

A forty-minute drive will take you to Golden, Colorado. This former gold rush town has a unique Western-flavored culture surrounded by rugged mesas and is home to Golden Gate Canyon State Park, with 12,000 acres of high mountain landscape with aspen trees, granite boulders, tall grasses, and fields of wildflowers.

Bridging military and student engagement: CU Boulder’s national security conference

campus tour cu boulder

National security isn’t a concept reserved for government insiders or those with special clearances. On April 17, the University of Colorado Boulder hosted a conference on national security that intended to bridge military expertise and student engagement on global and national security matters.

Organized by the Peace, Conflict and Security Program, the conference welcomed a select group of fellows and faculty members from the U.S. Army War College’s Eisenhower Program. The outreach program aims to bring military perspectives on national security issues to college and civic audiences. This event, led by four experts in different military fields, covered topics across the geopolitical scale, discussing situations from the involvement of women in the military on a worldwide scale to specific international laws.

“I am very interested in foreign policy and national security and am always curious to learn more about current events and policies. I think students who do not have a military background tend to only hear a more critical or academic view of national security, so I was interested in hearing from individuals who had first-hand knowledge and expertise in the field,” said CU Boulder student Elijah Parkes who attended the panel, which was held in the Center for Academic Success and Engagement.

Lieutenant Colonel Wade Smith, a CU Boulder alumni was one of the speakers at the event.

“It is good to be back home; it’s been about ten years since I have been back on campus. It is good to see the institution growing,” Smith said, adding, “I was pleasantly surprised when I got my graduate degree in international affairs at Rutgers, that the first year was largely review because the institution here had prepared me so well for that level of study.”

Currently working as an aircraft maintenance officer, Smith gave his perspective on the significance of meaningful allies and partnerships nationwide and globally.

“Alliances and partnerships are incredibly important to the US national security…  Most importantly, alliances and partnerships provided deterrence. Just like on a playground, if you have a bully who is acting aggressively and violating international norms, but then you have the other students on the playground stand up to the bully and say ‘no, that’s not how we do this,’ more than often that bully takes a step back, and realizes ‘is this something I want to get involved with?’”

To engage the participation of students and attendees, the panel opened up the conversation to questions from the audience.

One student asked, “How do you see impacts of foreign nations that limit women’s education or involvement in the military?”

Panelist Lieutenant Colonel Qiana Harder responded, “[Nations that allow women to serve] are strengthening land components by allowing more women to serve beyond the administrative roles that they typically get to serve in. In the Pacific, a lot of our exercises and engagements with our partners, we ask them if they could send a significant contingent of their female officers and enlisted military members to engage with ours so that we can strengthen that way. Not only are we teaching their women, but we are teaching their men as well.”

While much of the discussion was focused on the military, Parkes said he appreciated the wide range of perspectives on the different jobs in the national security field.

“My favorite part was hearing the variety of backgrounds that each speaker had, varying from an officer who was first an enlisted soldier now working in logistics to another officer whose work was focused on international relations in the military and engaging with other countries,” said Parkes.

President saliman announces dr. justin schwartz as cu boulder chancellor.

Dr Justin Schwartz CU Boulder Chancellor

Dear Members of the CU Community, It is my great pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. Justin Schwartz as the next chancellor of CU Boulder, effective July 1. I am confident he will be a leader who has the skills, experience, enthusiasm and vision to help guide CU Boulder into an exciting future.   I received overwhelmingly positive feedback about Justin following his campus visit and open forums with CU Boulder faculty, staff and students. He was equally well-received by community members who are critical partners of CU Boulder. After reflecting on this input and considering the exceptional attributes Justin brings, I am even more convinced he is the right person for the job.  I am grateful to everyone who participated in the forums, engaged in the process and offered their feedback. I deeply appreciate the diligence and efforts of the CU Boulder Chancellor Search Committee for carefully vetting and interviewing a talented group of candidates. Thanks as well to AGB Search, which did excellent work recruiting an outstanding pool of highly qualified candidates. Justin is a leader with whom CU Boulder’s power and promise resonates. He has a proven commitment to supporting a community that embodies different cultures and perspectives, and he will take our campus to new heights. He blends a strong appreciation for the liberal arts with a deep commitment to our research enterprise. He is committed to building a CU community that reflects the diversity of our great state. And Justin understands and embraces our imperative to meet our mission to serve our students, our state and our society. I greatly appreciate the ongoing commitment and leadership of Chancellor DiStefano, who has served CU Boulder with distinction for 50 years – 15 of those as chancellor – and has played an instrumental role in developing its strength and success, upon which Justin will continue to build.   I look forward to welcoming Justin to the CU community, and I hope you, too, will give him a warm Colorado welcome when he officially joins CU Boulder in July.

All the best,

Todd Saliman, President

President Todd Saliman names Justin Schwartz, Ph.D., chancellor of CU Boulder

University of Colorado President Todd Saliman on Friday named Justin Schwartz, Ph.D., chancellor of the University of Colorado Boulder, effective July 1. The University of Colorado Board of Regents unanimously approved a three-year contract for the new campus leader.

President Todd Saliman names Justin Schwartz, Ph.D., chancellor of CU Boulder

“CU Boulder will have a dynamic new leader with an outstanding vision who will build upon an impressive foundation already in place,” Saliman said. “He appreciates our deeply held commitment to our mission of serving Colorado, Coloradans and society. Justin had engaging discussions at forums with students, faculty, staff and community groups during his CU Boulder campus visit. With every group, the conversations demonstrated his knowledge of the opportunities and challenges on the horizon for the institution. The feedback from forums was overwhelmingly positive.”

Schwartz has more than 30 years of experience in higher education as a faculty member, dean and executive administrator. He most recently served as executive vice president and provost at Pennsylvania State University, where he previously was the Harold and Inge Marcus Dean of Engineering. Prior to that appointment, Schwartz served on the faculty at Florida State University and as department head at North Carolina State University.

He earned a doctorate in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

“It is an incredible honor to serve the University of Colorado, our students, faculty, staff and alumni, and the people across our state,” Schwartz said. “CU has incredible momentum, and we will carry the torch into a new era for the institution, elevating every aspect of our university. It was clear throughout my conversations with members of the Search Committee and my engagements during my public visit that the CU community has a deep passion for the university, the city of Boulder and the state of Colorado. I am thrilled to be a part of all with my family.”

President Saliman named Schwartz as the finalist for the position on April 2. Since then, Schwartz participated in open forums on the campus with faculty, staff, students and the community. The announcement followed a search process that began in November 2023 after Chancellor Phil DiStefano announced his plans to retire after nearly 15 years in the role and 50 years on campus. Chancellor DiStefano will return to the faculty in the School of Education, where he began his CU Boulder career in 1974.

“We were in a strong position to recruit an excellent new chancellor because CU Boulder has thrived under Phil’s leadership,” Saliman said of Chancellor DiStefano’s leadership. “I am deeply grateful.”

The CU Boulder Chancellor Search Committee was chaired by CU Senior Vice President for External Relations and Strategy Danielle Radovich Piper. The search committee included 21 members, 13 of whom were from the CU Boulder campus community, with the remainder closely connected to CU. The university engaged AGB Search to assist in recruiting, interviewing and advancing a highly qualified, diverse pool of candidates.

Local news | cu boulder event to recreate grateful dead concert light show, event to showcase grateful dead’s impact in boulder.

Author

The University of Colorado Boulder will hold an event on Friday for people to celebrate the Grateful Dead and learn about the band’s history in Boulder, which will include a recreated light show with original assets from the band’s concert at the university in 1969.

“We’re going to be able to do a demonstration of the original technology of the ’60s and ’70s,” CU Boulder music lecturer Micheal Sebulsky said, adding, “We’re very grateful to have some of the original Grateful Dead lighting members involved.”

Hank Schmidt, Chas Barbour and Patrick Cullie are members of Spontanuity, a light show that provided visual background for the Grateful Dead using multiple image-making devices. They’ll be on the light panel for the event.

There will be a demonstration of the liquid art technology that was used to get the Grateful Dead’s liquid light psychedelic illusion during the band’s concerts. A 60-plus-year-old projector will showcase the lights.

“We will recreate the light show using some of the original assets, the transparencies that were projected in the light shows,” Colorado Music Experience Director G. Brown said.

The Grateful Dead performed at CU Boulder four times. Their first performance was at the University Memorial Center in 1969 followed by two concerts at Folsom Field in 1972 and 1980. The last show at CU Boulder was held at the CU Events Center in 1981. After multiple members of the Grateful Dead became part of the band Dead & Company, shows at CU Boulder continued. Dead & Co held its final concert at Folsom Field last summer.

“The purpose of the event is to talk about the role of Boulder and the music scene in Boulder on the technology of music,” Sebulsky said.

Experts will discuss the role of music and live concerts in Boulder, focused on the Grateful Dead, and how that’s helped build the growth of music technology.

Musician, broadcaster and author David Gans and Kenny Passarelli, a bassist who played with Joe Walsh, Elton John, Dan Fogelberg, Stephen Stills and Hall and Oates, will participate on the sound panel.

Brown said the event will be educational and entertaining. He hopes people gain knowledge and an appreciation for how concerts were done historically without things like digitized lights.

“It was a unique time and place and in no way resembles modern-day concerts but some of us think it was important and I think we can convey that in an entertaining way,” Brown said.

The event is presented by Colorado Music Experience in partnership with the Fiske Planetarium at CU Boulder. The first show will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and the second show from 9 to 10:30 p.m. Friday at the Fiske Planetarium, 2414 Regent Drive.
