There is a certain appreciation of Celtic music. There are usually television specials that feature traditional Celtic music on the Public Broadcasting Network here in the United States. It is unlike any other genre, and the culture behind it holds so much. Mary Black is one of these artists who can perform as a well-respected Celtic/ folk singer. She brings your attention to a culture that is so rich with history, which you are completely drawn in by the beauty of her voice. Watching her live performances is like being transported to another place and another time, a true cultural experience. The emotions emitted are somehow amplified with the clear pride that she has for her culture. When she performs a pianist, violinist and a mandolin player usually accompany her. In the background is usually a screen with images of historical Ireland. But she is not entirely limited to traditional Celtic music. Within her repertoire are folk songs that have been passed down in the Irish countryside. What is really a sight to see is when she performs “Song For Ireland” and you can see the people in the crowd become overwhelmed with their country pride. If you are like me and not Irish, you close your eyes and take in the sounds of Mary Black, combined with that of the people in the audience and you become closer to the experience than you could possibly have ever imagined.

Excellent concert, a pity that this is 'The Last Call' as I shall miss her touring in this country.
The audience was very responsive and enthusiastic and that always makes for a good show. The addition of Brian Kennedy as a warm-up guest was a bonus.
The venue, Guildford G Live is not the best as the artist on stage is quite a long way away from the audience but as we were in the Stalls, that helped, except the floor is not tiered, so you look up towards the stage!
Mary always produces an excellent show and is ably supported by her brilliant backing musicians.
We have seen her at Greenwich, The Barbican, The Palladium, O2 Shepherds Bush and a few other venues and she always exceeds our expectation.
it was a bit meh. Mary was not on her best, it seemed her mind was elsewhere. Did not make a lasting impression. At some point, singers should just stop performing.

Mary Timony Announces New Solo Album Untame the Tiger, Shares 2024 Tour Dates
She also shared the lead single, "Dominoes"
Mary Timony has announced her new album, Untame the Tiger , out February 23rd via Merge. She’s also mapped out a 2024 North American headlining tour in support and revealed the lead single, “Dominoes.”
Untame the Tiger is Timony’s first solo album in 15 years. It was recorded following the breakup of a long-term relationship and bookended by the deaths of her father and mother. Timony wrote many of the songs over a two-year period during walks and bike rides she took as a break from serving as the primary caregiver for her ailing parents. “Since I had to confront the reality of loss, I realized what was important to me about being alive, and I became less scared,” she said in a statement. “The record became my anchor in a time when I was losing so much around me. It felt like all I had — a guide that helped me through, and gave me hope.”
Timony’s tour will feature Birthday Girl DC, youbet, and Rosali opening on select dates. It will kick off on February 28th in Baltimore and stop in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more before wrapping in Santa Ana, California on March 30th. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, November 10th at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster .
On “Dominoes,” Timony reflects on her past relationship and processes the aftermath of the breakup. Despite its cathartic nature, the single almost didn’t make the album. “We needed one last song, and I found a demo of it I had forgotten about at the last minute,” Timony said. Watch the music video, directed by “DR. CAT,” below.
In 2007, Timony released the album The Shapes We Make under the moniker of Mary Timony Band. Since then, the former member of Autoclave and Helium has put out several records as a part of the groups Wild Flag and Ex Hex .

Rocker Mary Timony is untamed
Mary Timony’s new album, “Untame the Tiger,” is steeped in a recurring metaphor: the continual return to the earth.
“The garden of time grows backwards in my mind,” she sings on “Don’t Disappear,” while on “No Thirds,” she proclaims, “We wandered from the garden, don’t want to wander alone.”
The feeling of life as a solitary sojourn has become more acute in recent times. It’s been almost four years since the coronavirus halted and altered daily life, and many artists are still working through the tumult of the period in their art. That’s especially true for Timony: Aside from the pandemic, the singer-songwriter spent several years as the primary caretaker for her elderly parents. Then, her long-term relationship ended, and soon after, both of her parents died in the span of about a year and a half.
“Everything changed in my life suddenly, and everything was drastically different, and I found myself in a really difficult, changing place,” she says.
Despite her new mental-emotional surroundings, music remained a constant, as it has been during her entire life. She spent her teenage years at Duke Ellington School of the Arts and graduated into a steady stream of bands and side projects: short-lived Dischord act Autoclave, influential Boston indie band Helium, garage rockers Ex Hex, current Dischord punks Hammered Hulls and more.
Between the pandemic and her own personal losses, songwriting helped the D.C. native get through a “crazy, stressful time.”
“It was weird losing everybody that you’re close to at the same time,” she says. “It’s a very weird feeling, and music was something that I did that helped me feel grounded. … In a weird way, it balanced itself out: I didn’t have time to think, because it was so nuts.”
The writing and recording of “Untame the Tiger” gave Timony an opportunity to process loss. While grief is a profoundly personal experience, those who have lost both parents might find something familiar in the bittersweet feeling of possibility and freedom that often follows. “I love my parents, and they were wonderful, but they weren’t psyched about me being a musician. Now that I don’t have that hanging over my head … it makes me see the world in a totally different place,” she says. “I miss them, but I don’t miss the damage that they had as children. They had really difficult times as kids themselves, and they’re free of that now — and so are we.”
From that freedom comes a timeless-sounding rock album with lyrics that are, for the most part, more direct than the fantastical poetry she penned on solo albums at the beginning of the millennium.
“I was always really scared of saying what I really felt because it’s scary to put yourself out there. So as I’ve gotten older, I’ve just tried to be more vulnerable in my lyrics,” she says.
After Helium disbanded in 1998, Timony released a handful of solo albums in the aughts before returning to band life with Wild Flag, Ex Hex and Hammered Hulls. The pendulum swung back on “Untame the Tiger.”
“I stopped doing solo records because I kind of ran out of motivation, because it’s hard when you’re on your own,” she says. “But I was ready again.”
Not that she’s totally alone: The album offered her an opportunity to work with musicians she respects and admires, including longtime collaborator Joe Wong; Dave Mattacks, the drummer for influential British folk band Fairport Convention, who has credits on classic albums by Brian Eno; Jethro Tull; and more. Playing with Mattacks was “life-changing,” Timony says. “Everybody that collaborated with me on the record is one of my favorite musicians. That was such a good feeling and so fun and so inspiring,” she says. “Because of them, I like the record, whereas in the past, I’ve tried to do too much on my own, and that’s never good. I come up with the songs and I can only make them so good.”
That collaboration continues with Colin Burns’s artwork for the album. In bright colors, the cover features a portrait of Timony alongside old-school tattoo iconography: titular tigers, diamonds and dominoes. The white space is filled with words and phrases drawn not just from Timony’s lyrics (“LIVING IN THIS DESERT,” “A CROSS ON YOUR LIFE LINE”) but also her recording notes (“RIFF X 4,” “EDIT GUITAR SOLO”).
“So much of the record is my voice about different relationships — mostly boyfriends, my ex-boyfriend and maybe some other people — but they’re mostly love songs. They’re about people I’ve loved,” she says. “It’s cool to have someone else have their voice on the cover. I really liked that idea — it’s not just my voice.”
Throughout “Untame the Tiger,” Timony’s voice shares songs with lessons learned about love and loss, as if she’s running toward the horizon and whatever lies beyond it.
“Keep moving on now, never stay too long/ Let the sun shine on everything that’s wrong/ I still wanna know what I’ve really never known.”
March 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW. blackcatdc.com . $20-$22.

Just a Few of the Biggest Concert Tours of 2024, from Olivia Rodrigo to Bad Bunny
Posted: March 6, 2024 | Last updated: March 6, 2024
Listening to your favorite musician at home is fun, but there's nothing quite like the experience of singing along with them, and tons of more fans, live. And as luck would have it, 2024 is shaping up to be a massive year for some of the world's top musical acts, so chances are your favorite performer might be stopping at a city near you soon.
Ahead, we rounded up some of the biggest concert tours of 2024, ranging from Taylor Swift's mega-popular Eras Tour to Drake and J. Cole's exciting It's All A Blur Tour - Big as the What?—set to kick off this winter. You can also expect tour dates from classic icons like Stevie Nicks, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and more.
1) Taylor Swift
Undoubtedly one of the biggest concert tours ever, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour will continue right through 2024. The international leg of the tour kicked off in Japan, where she played four shows in Tokyo. She'll also stop in Melbourne, Singapore, Paris, Madrid, London, Milan, and more before returning to the States to play in the fall.
There's nothing like seeing T. Swift IRL, but don't fret if you're unable to nab tickets—the Eras Tour movie is now available to stream from the comfort of your home.
2) Olivia Rodrigo
This is not a drill—"Drivers License" singer Olivia Rodrigo will be hitting the road on tour starting at the end of February. The Guts World Tour runs from February through mid-August and has dates in Nashville, Toronto, Chicago, and New York City, among others. Even cooler? Rodrigo will have a stacked list of special guests—like PinkPantheress, Remi Wolf, The Breeders, and Chappell Roan—with her.
3) Red Hot Chili Peppers
Did you hear the good news? The Red Hot Chili Peppers have extended their global tour through summer 2024. The buzzy stadium tour, which kicked off in June 2022, will now run until July 2024 and bring the California-based band to places like Los Angeles, Tampa, Toronto, and Salt Lake City.
4) Bad Bunny
It's fitting that "Monaco" rapper Bad Bunny titled his tour Most Wanted —it's slated to be one of the year's hottest tours. Planned to help promote his latest studio album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana , Most Wanted will kick off in Salt Lake City on February 21 and run through May 26.
5) Billy Joel
If you haven't yet seen Billy Joel perform live, there's still time! The Piano Man has added more tour dates to his schedule, stopping in cities like Tampa, New York, Denver, and St. Louis this year. Even more exciting? He'll share the stage with fellow iconic performers Sting and Stevie Nicks for some of these dates.
Mitski recently announced that she's expanding her North American tour dates , and we couldn't be more excited. The months-long tour, which supports her 2023 studio album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, has a long list of stops, including Miami Beach, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Paris.
There's nothing quite like a Madonna concert, that's for sure. The singer's Celebration Tour , which started last October, continues straight through the spring with dates in Seattle, San Francisco, Mexico City, and more. Besides her eye-catching sets, chart-topping songs, and impressive choreography, concertgoers also get a glimpse of the performer's fantastic costumes, which include looks from Versace and Jean Paul Gaultier.
8) Bleachers
The New Jersey-founded rock band, which is fronted by Jack Antonoff—known for producing albums for top acts like Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey—not only has announced a new album but a new tour , too. The tour will start in the UK in March, ending fittingly in the band's home state of New Jersey in mid-June. Check out their newly released music video for "Tiny Moves" if you need a Bleachers fix in the meantime.
9) Nicki Minaj
Nicki fans rejoice: the rapper and singer might be coming to a city near you soon as part of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour. The massive tour will include performances in Brooklyn, Oakland, and Baltimore, with stops at Dreamville Festival and Rolling Loud California along the way.
10) Blink 182
Live out all of your nineties and early aughts pop-punk dreams with one of Blink 182's One More Time Tour dates. The tour, which supports the band's ninth studio album, One More Time..., will bring the trio to cities all over the globe, including Sydney, Santiago, Portland, and Boston. The tour's supporting act is Pierce the Veil, which is also worth checking out.
11) Stevie Nicks
The oh-so-magical Stevie Nicks continues her touring streak with a bunch of 2024 concert dates . Set to begin in Atlantic City, NJ on February 10, Nicks will visit a dozen cities throughout the U.S. this year, such as New Orleans, Omaha, and Chicago. "Let's keep this party going in 2024," the singer-songwriter posted on her Instagram in September to announce the newly added tour dates.
12) The 1975
