We were so pleased with the itinerary for our 7 day self-drive tour. It allowed enough flexibility for us to detour at will and still visit key sites. The nightly accommodations were clean and comfortable (if you don't mind single beds) and breakfast was plentiful at each hotel (although the coffee should come with a warning - not so good at the hotels - except Fosshotel Baron in Reykjavik was pretty good by comparison). While weather interrupted one day's plan, our agent suggested alternatives and we were able to enjoy the day. It was an exceptional trip for a reasonable price. Of course, we have to go back because 7 days isn't enough to truly see Iceland. Will use TourRadar again!!!

The overall experience was amazing. I would recommend writing the leaving times on the itinerary and the checkin times for the hotels. One Hotel was only available from 17:00-19:00.

Amazing trip. Very well organised by Marina travel. Excellent itinerary, with all the ‘usual spots’ like the golden circle, that everyone sees. But also some more ‘out of the way’ things that make this more special. A beautiful country and an brilliant way to see it all. I would really recommend this trip. ♥️

12 Days Self-drive | Everything your must see in Iceland Ring Road Tour

A simply outstanding 18 day tour arranged by Marina Tours team. Completely and quickly responsive, flexible, excellent itinerary. Only complaint: Hella Hotel needs to be removed from your network. Not clean, a very old rundown building - we stayed elsewhere at our own expense. All other hotels were wonderful, and also offered really good food & decent wine lists.

10 Days Self-drive | In-Depth Iceland Ring Road Tour Tour

10 Days Self-drive | In-Depth Iceland Ring Road Tour

This was a great adventure. The trip is well organized and once we booked a tour the company was very responsive. There are so many places to see and explore each day, and it makes for long days with late arrivals at the hotels. All the hotels were very satisfactory. I had 2 concerns regarding the trip. 1) The beer spa. Our visit was scheduled for 2pm and there is no way that we could possibly been there by that time. It followed a long day of exploring the Snaefellsness Pennisula. It did not seem possible to cover that amount of area and still arrive back in time for the beer spa appointment. We had to skip this one. 2) Why was Hella selected as one of our hotel overnights? We had to cover so much ground and events in the first few days and then suddenly our daily driving time dropped significantly the last couple of days. What were we supposed to do near Hella?

The tour was a once in a lifetime experience. Iceland itself was amazingly epic. The convenience of having the accommodations, car rental, and daily itinerary provided was the biggest upside. Hotels were the downside, I’d say. As someone with some food allergies, breakfast left me with fruit as my sole option, and the beds were consistently uncomfortable. We ran into no issues with our bookings or anything. Smooth trip. Happy adventure.
Iceland Travel was a great company to work with on our trip. They booked some amazing little hotels and Bed and Breakfasts that I'm not sure we ever would have known about if we had tried booking the same trip on our own. Our agent also made some excellent recommendations on how to spend our time in Iceland. We enjoyed our trip so much and would book with Iceland Travel again in the future. It did take a little longer to get an initial response from the company, but they are a small agency. Once communication was established with them though, booking everything was incredibly easy and they were happy to make any customizations to our package that we needed or wanted for our trip

Other Reviews

Dear vilhjalmur, great tour, out best tour guide, what is iceland known for.

The country is mostly famous for being called the Land of Ice and Fire. The reason people choose to travel to Iceland is mainly due to its variety of stunning sceneries, natural wonders, the beautiful untouched nature. Also wonders like the waterfalls, green moss, red and black sand beaches, volcanos, glaciers, and glaciers lagoons. The rich cultural history, Norse Mythology, folklore, Icelandic horses. Another interesting fact is that renewable energy provides 100% electricity production in Iceland, 73% coming from hydropower and 27% from geothermal power.

Despite fearsome Viking ancestors 1100 hundred years ago, then the people have become a peace-loving nation. No army, and the police is not armed with weapons.

Abundance of waters and the fact that the country is situated in the mid-Atlantic ridge, Iceland has high temperature geothermal resources enabling us to heat up all our houses in an environmentally friendly manner. In other words, we do not use fossil fuels for energy production.

Arriving in iceland.

Upon arrival in Iceland your private driver will be waiting for you at the arrival hall with a sign with your name on and take you to check-in at your accommodation. The day before your arrival you will be sent an email from us with details about the driver and information for your airport transfer with us.

Internet & WIFI Access

In case you need to stay connected all the time our vehicles offer free WIFI on board, so you should not encounter any problems with finding an internet connection for your smartphone, laptop or other web-enabled devices.

What type of vehicle do we use for our tours?

We use Mercedes Benz V-class (1 - 6 passengers) or new Land Rover Discovery LR5 (1 - 3 passengers) for most of our private tours and transportation. Both vehicles combine comfort and luxury on a large scale while travelling. For groups with more than 6 passengers we use Mercedes Benz Sprinter 16 seater or Ford F350 Long Excursions making sure that it's enough space for all passengers and luggage.

How flexible are the tours?

You will have your own private guide that will take care of you for the days you have a private guidance included according to your final itinerary. Our private tours are flexible, stops and timing for each day can be changed in collaboration with your guide.

You will have your own private guide and vehicle for 8 - 10 hours each day unless otherwise confirmed.

The Northern Lights - Tour (15 Sept - 15 April)

The Northern lights season in Iceland is from September to April. This is when the nights are dark so your chances of seeing the Northern Lights are greater.  We will keep the Northern Lights tour open during your stay and go out on the best night, that has the best chances of clear skies and activity.  We leave the Northern Lights tour unpaid until we can confirm that we will be operating the tour for that night. You will get an update from us every day during your stay, if we will be operating the tour that night or not.

If we are operating the tour you will get the chance to go at an extra cost, 150.000 ISK that needs to be paid before the tour. We will be sending you an email before 5:00 PM every day, in case you can go on the tour we will be sending you a payment link to confirm your booking and the tour usually departs at 09:00 PM.  Please note that we don’t offer a free retry and thatThe Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and sights can never be guaranteed, but our guides have a lot of experience and will try their best to spot the Northern Lights and go to the right location for that night.

Deluxe Iceland claims no responsibility for any sickness or schedule change due to weather, strike, natural disaster or any other cause beyond our control. Please note that some tours can be changed or rearranged depending on the weather conditions, so we need to be flexible. We are concerned about your safety and overall experience. In case of activity being canceled or tour changed your guide will let you know in time and give you alternative options and make the best out of the situation.

Travel Documents

All travel documents are available electronically as PDF documents on my booking page that you will receive access to in an email once your booking is confirmed and your final itinerary is ready. Upon arrival in Iceland your driver will present you with the hard copies of the travel documents, so you don't need to print them out.

Will we be with the same guide the whole time?

We always try to have you with the same guide for the days you will be touring in Iceland, but sometimes might need to switch between two or more guides depending on the duration of your trip and our availability.

Tipping/Gratuity for guides/drivers

If you really want to show your guide that you appreciate his work and the effort he put in your trip and experience in Iceland you can use this as a rule of thumb. Generally, the guides receive a tip at the end of the trip that ranges from 100 - 200 USD per day, this amount is totally up to you and please note that tipping in Iceland is not required.

However this is a great way to show that you were happy with the services and you appreciate their work!

How much does it cost for overtime with driver/guide?

You will have your own private guide and vehicle for 8 - 10 hours each day unless otherwise confirmed. If you request more than 10 hours and want to have the driver/guide at your disposal longer, the additional cost is 21.000 ISK per hour . For the days you don't have a private driver/guide included in your itinerary you can add the extra service with a minimum cost of 4 hours.

Lunches and dinners

Lunches and dinners are not included in our packages. Your guide will give you options for lunch each day while you are touring with us. Here you will find a list of restaurants in Reykjavik and can easily book your table.

Are there any PCR Test requirements?

There are no longer any COVID-related border restrictions for travel to Iceland. All visitors are welcome.

World Class planning and execution. Absolutely amazing service in a wonderful country.

February 14, 2024

Deluxe Iceland is 1st class, and they made this the most perfect vacation ever. Every detail was attended to. From the minute the arrangements we made with Anna, who worked to make sure we hit every spot to the driving with Unnar, we made sure everything executed flawlessly. I would give them 10 stars if the system allowed. We have traveled the world but never had a better trip than this one. We will definitely be back! I recommend anyone to book with this world-class... Awesome solo trip

January 2, 2024

Unexpectedly had a solo trip to Iceland (my daughter got sick and couldn't go) and Deluxe Iceland made my trip absolutely amazing. Unnar was an amazing guide, he went above and beyond to make sure my trip was nothing short of spectacular. I didn't have to worry about a thing, they took care of everything and customized my trip perfectly. I'm going back in Oct with my daughter, and I can't wait to see what they plan for us. I highly recommend Deluxe Iceland; you will not be... Read more

Iceland Adventure

Deluxe Iceland took the guess work out of planning an adventurous vacation for my family with 3 children, aged 11, 11, 9. They carefully crafted an itinerary that was exciting, educational and took into consideration that we were traveling with children. The hotel suites were phenomenal with friendly staff that were willing to answer questions and make every accommodation to our requests. The activities, which included ATVs, waterfalls, snowmobiling, geothermal spa, farm visits, lava center, park hikes, geysirs, etc. were carefully mapped out to maximize our 6 day trip. Deluxe Iceland staff were available in the days leading up to our arrival and promptly answered any/all questions while we were in Iceland. I would highly recommend using them to plan your... Icelandic Dream Vacation

November 24, 2023

Our family of three just returned after an amazing 4 day trip to Iceland. The trip was wildly successful - despite an impending volcanic eruption and hurricane-force winds - due to the incredible staff at Deluxe Iceland (Arney with planning and Unnar as our driver/guide). The team at Deluxe Iceland was able to preemptively identify potential issues due to weather and adapt our itinerary accordingly - something we could never manage on our own without that same level of knowledge. We also avoided large tourist groups and were able to optimize sightseeing according to weather - ultimately seeing and learning so much more than we could have accomplished on our own. We highly recommend planning your Icelandic vacation with Deluxe... Read more

The 7 Best Tour Companies in Iceland

Kirkjufell mountain in Iceland under the Northern Lights

Iceland is an utterly unique country, with glaciers varying in color from white to blue to gray, waterfalls the size of skyscrapers plummeting down sheer rock cliffs, and bumpy lava fields covered in moss in every shade of green you can imagine. And you’ll hear fantastical tales from history and folklore from people who still believe that elves might exist.

It’s one of my favorite countries in the world, one I fell in love with the first time I visited. I’ve been back multiple times since then during various seasons.

But Iceland isn’t always easy to get around, especially in the off-season, when many bus routes shut down because of weather.

One of the ways to get around that problem is by joining an organized tour. You’ll get to experience places that can be inaccessible without a four-wheel drive, and you’ll have an expert local guide to help make the most of your visit.

I’ve put together a list of my favorite tour companies in Iceland, from short city walking tours to multiday adventure hikes. While joining a tour isn’t cheap (you’ll definitely pay more than if you were to explore the country independently ), you’ll also be able to enjoy your trip without any of the planning while simultaneously benefitting from having a local guide on hand to deepen your experience in this incredible place.

Here’s my list of the best tour companies in Iceland:

1. CityWalk Reykjavik

A free walking tour is always a great way to introduce yourself to a new city, and the guides from CityWalk can give you a good overview of Reykjavik on this two-hour stroll. They run daily tours at 10:30am and 1:30pm, where they show you not only the city’s main attractions, but teach you about Icelandic history as well as share some lesser known and fun facts about Iceland’s capital.

The Reykjavik walking tours have been running since 2014, and the local guides incorporate an element of humor into their tours to make you laugh while you’re exploring. They’ll show you some more overlooked parts of town and also give you some tips for saving money in this expensive country.

Even though it’s technically a free tour, be sure to tip your guide what you think the tour was worth at the end (that’s how they earn a living).

2. Intrepid

Intrepid is my favorite multi-day tour company. I’ve been on tours with them a number of times in a number of places and always enjoy myself. They keep their groups small and work with local guides, and they don’t rush you from sight to sight.

Intrepid offers a number of options in Iceland, including the classic Ring Road trip (which Intrepid calls their Iceland Discovery Tour), where you circumnavigate the island and get to visit some of the best-known sights, from the glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón on the south coast to the volcanic lake at Mývatn in the north. They even offer tours that also include Greenland too.

What’s also great is that they offer four different tiers of tour “styles” so that you can choose the level and price that suits your needs. “Basix” is the cheapest option and includes the most basic level accommodation with not many extra inclusions, while “Premium” tours are the most expensive and luxurious, as you’ll stay in 4-star accommodations and have more activities and meals included. “Original” and “Comfort” tour styles are somewhere in between the two.

Intrepid’s Iceland tours start at $1,600 for their 5-day Iceland Express Tour and go up to $7,100 for the nine-day Premium Iceland Tour.

3. Arctic Adventures

The award-winning Arctic Adventures is one of the biggest tour companies in Iceland, offering a huge range of one-day and multi-day tours. They also offer self-driving tours, where they provide you with a rental car, pre-booked accommodation, a detailed itinerary, and the option to join some guided day tours along the way. It’s a great option if you want to remove some of the stress and hassle of planning your own trip, but prefer to travel independently.

Its one-day tour options include all the main Icelandic sightseeing activities, like ice caves, snorkeling, glacier tours, and the popular Golden Circle route to Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir hot springs, and Gullfoss Waterfall. They have multi-day trips as well, including trekking tours where you’ll hike across Iceland’s stunning scenery accompanied by an experienced adventure guide.

Arctic Adventures’ full-day trips range in price from around $140 to $280. Their multi-day trips start at $432 USD for a two-day adventure, to an eight-day tour of the Ring Road for $2,434 USD.

4. Icelandic Mountains Guides

For 25 years, Icelandic Mountain Guides has focused on true adventure travel for very small groups, offering one-day and multi-day tours as well as courses on wilderness first aid and mountaineering if you’re interested in gaining some technical outdoor skills.

Its multi-day tours include more unique routes, like a five-day backpacking trek from Núpsstaðaskógur to Skaftafell, or a ten-day expedition across the Highlands starting from the northern town of Akureyri. They even offer ski touring packages. Prices for multi-day tours range from $542 USD for a two-day tour on the southern coast to $4,032 USD for a nine-day glacier expedition.

It also runs one-day tours to ice caves and glacier walk experiences, among others, leaving from Reykjavík, along with similar one-day adventures on the Sólheimajökull glacier on the south coast if you’re in the area and can meet them there. Day tour prices range from $77 USD for an all-day guided lava hike to $256 USD for a snowmobiling adventure on the south coast.

Icelandic Mountain Guides has a genuine conservation focus and holds a twice-yearly event where guides spend time planting trees. All of its day tours are carbon neutral, with a mission to make its multi-day tours carbon neutral in the future.

5. Iceland Horizon

Iceland Horizon offers a huge variety of single-day tours leaving from Reykjavík, Akureyri, and Lake Mývatn. Tour offerings include everything from the classic Golden Circle route to more adventurous snowmobiling and snowshoeing tours.

They’re a good choice for travelers who want to see the main sights and do fun activities but who don’t have access to their own vehicle. They run their small-group tours (always under 19 people) from a mini-bus (which has Wi-Fi), making it a comfortable way to see the sights without having to bother with renting your own car.

Expect to pay around $140 USD per person for a day trip. They also offer tailor-made tours, where you’ll work together with one of their local guides to create an itinerary just for you (pricing greatly varies based on what you want for your personalized tour).

6. Ride with Locals

Ride with Locals is a motorcycle tour company that takes you to the middle of nowhere on trails you wouldn’t access any other way, meaning you’ll see volcanoes, craters, and mountains that very few visitors to Iceland do, making your Iceland experience particularly unique. Its trips last between three days and a week and generally head inland, rather than hugging the coast like most tours.

The motorcycles are KTM 690R and Husqvarna 701 dual sport bikes, and all guides are really experienced with riding through Iceland’s highlands. Some trips use sleeping bags in mountain huts for accommodations (and include all the meals), while others include hotel stays with breakfast.

Costs range between about $4,000 USD for a three-day trip to $7,400 USD for an advanced seven-day expedition. This includes motorbike hire, fuel, accommodation, and some meals. Tours range in difficulty level (noted on the website), but keep in mind that these are only for experienced motorcyclists.

7. Midgard Adventures

Based in Southern Iceland, Midgard Adventures is a family-owned company that offers all sorts of fun and adventurous tours. Off-roading with jeeps, fat bike tours, hiking, snowmobiling, and glacier walks are all on offer here with tours led by family friends and local guides. They have both single-day tours as well as multi-day tours that stretch from 2-7 days (including seasonally-exclusive tours such as mountain biking the highlands in the summer).

Midgard also has its own hotel in Hvolsöllur that you can base yourself from, complete with restaurant, bar, rooftop hot tub, and a sauna (Hvolsöllur is around 90 minutes southeast of Reykjavik).

Prices start around $265 USD for a day tour. While not cheap, Midgard tours are high-quality and tons of fun. You won’t find the same cookie-cutter experiences here.

BONUS: Get Your Guide

If you can’t find the perfect Iceland tour for your trip above, you’ll undoubtedly be able to find it on GetYourGuide . This tour marketplace allows local tour operators to list their offerings, meaning that there’s a huge variety of tours to choose from here, from food tours in Reykjavik to whale watching tours in Húsavík , to multi-day adventures around the country.

Look for the “GetYourGuide Certified” logo for tours that have been vetted by GetYourGuide themselves, though you can also read reviews from previous tour participants to make sure that you sign up for a quality tour. You can even book admission tickets for attractions (like to the countless hot springs that you’ll undoubtedly be visiting) too.

Known as both the Land of Elves and the Land of Fire and Ice, Iceland is a destination like no other. There’s a lot packed into this island , and joining a tour is a great way to maximize your time and experience here.

From challenging multi-day hikes through some of the most scenic landscapes you’ll ever see, to gently exploring a glacier lagoon by boat or visiting puffin colonies, to wandering the streets of the quirky capital of Reykjavik , there’s an Icelandic tour company for you!

Guiding Service around Iceland

Adventures.com offers both large and small groups the benefit of their great guiding services in   tours around Iceland . Travellers who have pre-outlined travel plans often may not know exactly where certain landmarks are or where certain travelling aids can be found - it is at times like these that being advised by our great and experienced guides is invaluable.

For instance we have worked closely with several well known television networks and with location scouts for some of the big movie production companies who are well aware of our knowledge of Icelandic geology and geography.

guide showing how to put on crampons before a tour

Recently we worked with a Japanese TV network on their documentary about Iceland’s hot springs and natural baths. We also guided the team from the Discovery Channel when they made their documentary about Icelandic lava caves.

Apart from those assignments, we have worked with a French television network on a documentary about the unique Icelandic nature and with Swiss filmmakers making a documentary about Vatnajokull, the 3rd largest glacier in the world.

So it really is unimportant what the reason is for your visit to Iceland, we take pride in offering to you the best available service, guidance and advice from A-Z on the tours which will best suit you and your companions. This service includes accommodation, travel and transfers and anything else you may possibly need.

4x4 bus crossing a river in iceland

You may want to just drive around Reykjavik, or maybe even to go further, perhaps to the top of the Sneafellsjokull Glacier, to the Westfjords, to Landmannalaugar, to Thorsmork, to Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon, to Thingvellir National Park, to Myvatn Lake, or to the top of the Hekla volcano. Contact the staff at Extreme Iceland and get more information regarding a tour using our Highland Taxi service. One word of warning - please do not forget to bring you camera with you, because the   Highlands of Iceland   hold hidden jewels not seen by many.

The Benefits

It is proven that a training camp improves team morale, brings closer together the members of the team and overall improves a swimmer's results and confidence during their events. The time spent away in a training camp will allow athletes to focus entirely on their training without the everyday distractions of home or school.

It also gives athletes the chance to enjoy different cultural experiences depending on the location they choose to go to.

Discover the best tour companies in Iceland. Read this article to know what to look for in choosing the tour operator that will handle your trip to Iceland. Learn about their most exciting tours , from sightseeing to adventure experiences.

Iceland is one of the most popular destinations in the world. Thanks to its diverse landscapes, natural attractions, and rich culture, nearly a million travelers visit Iceland yearly.

When exploring Iceland, most visitors book organized tours from tour operators and travel agencies rather than make DIY trips. These organized tours can help save time and provide itinerary options even before you arrive in the land of fire and ice.

For example, suppose you want to visit the Golden Circle of Iceland or go  boating at the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon . The best tour operators in Iceland can give you an easy and convenient experience. Their impeccable services and extensive experience can transform a visit to these locations into an unforgettable Icelandic holiday.

Watch the dramatic eruption of the Strokkur geyser when you visit the Golden Circle.

Choosing a tour operator that will handle your travel activities can make or unmake your Icelandic holiday. That’s why it’s essential to research the tour company and its products before finalizing your booking.

What makes a tour provider the perfect match for your travel needs? You can search the web for blogs and articles about this question, but you’ll probably get unlimited or overwhelming answers.  To save you from the trouble of extensive research online, we have listed five recurring factors to consider when choosing a tour provider in Iceland or anywhere else.

Does your tour operator have positive reviews online? You can start selecting the best tour operator by knowing if they have a good reputation in handling tour packages. Most tour companies have an online presence you can check through search engines and social media.

Search engines like Google display review ratings of tour companies from unique users who had prior transactions with them. Apart from the five-star rating you can base on, you can also view the comments by users for specific details of their tour experiences.

How many years has the tour company been operating? In most cases, those with long years of operation in the travel industry have more expertise in running excursions.

If you have saved up months of your salary for this travel, you may not want to gamble your Icelandic dream holiday on a company with less than a year of operation.

How much are the operator’s tour products compared to their competitors? Pricing or budgeting is a vital part of every traveler’s vacation planning. Before booking a product, consider comparing the price with other companies offering a similar experience.

Pricing for tours in Iceland varies widely depending on the duration, type of activity, and the number of participants. Sightseeing tours are typically cheaper than activity tours like skiing and glacier hiking, in the same way that group tours are more affordable than private tours.

In addition, the best tour operators in Iceland have detailed tour descriptions where you can read the inclusions of each tour product. For example, a tour product should include a guide and entrance fees to attractions. Meanwhile, your tour package must include accommodations for multi-day tours in Iceland .

Tour Vehicles

What vehicles are used for tours in Iceland?

Tour providers in Iceland use different types of vehicles for their packages, depending on the kind of activity and number of participants.

Private tours typically use private cars, super jeeps, and minibusses for their packages. This setup is ideal for those who want a more personalized experience with a better pace and privacy.

On the other hand, tours with a bigger number of joiners use large buses to transport travelers to specific destinations. The buses can accommodate at least 30 passengers and up. This setup is standard for sightseeing tours in the  Golden Circle and the South Coast .

Do the tour guides speak English? Do they know other languages?

A tour guide is one of the most significant parts of any tour experience. They can either make your adventure more fun or forgettable.

A reliable tour operator in Iceland has local tour guides that are friendly and knowledgeable. They know the elements of your tour at the back of their hands even when not holding a brochure. They will tell you trivia, stories, and folklore about the attractions you’re exploring.

In most cases, the guides can speak English to accommodate foreign travelers. Sometimes, other guides can even speak different languages like French, German, Spanish, Chinese, and more. You can verify this when checking out a tour product and website or by asking the tour operator directly.

To help you plan your trip to Iceland, below is a list of 25 tour companies we consider the best in Iceland based on the five factors mentioned above. These operators are ranked and arranged based on their 5-star ratings, reviews, and quality of tours from the lowest to the highest.

Gulfoss is one of Iceland's most spectacular waterfalls

Hiring a car is the obvious way, but driving on Iceland’s roads and getting off the beaten track in winter can be tricky.

Guided tours are great – they take you to see places you’d never otherwise access with expert local guides on hand – but you may not want to stick to a set itinerary and be with a busload of other people.

So, why not consider a private tour of Iceland? If you’re travelling out of season, private winter tours in Iceland can be a really good idea.

And private multi-day tours of Iceland are a great way of seeing the best of the country in a hurry.

Whether you’re on a stopover from the US, a two-week trip from India, a long weekend from the UK or a holiday from anywhere else in the world, a private tour of Iceland tailored to your own specific interests is a great bucket-list adventure.

You can chose anything from a four- to seven-day trip that takes you round the entire island on the Iceland Ring Road, and includes such treats as a boat trip on a glacial lagoon, entry to the Blue Lagoon, a whale-watching trip and a guided glacier hike.

Explore the lava fields round Lake Mývatn

This tour starts from Akureyi and explores the volcanic area around Lake Mývatn near Iceland’s north coast.

You’ll visit the historic Goðafoss waterfall, the basalt pillars and sculptures at Dimmuborgir, Grjótagjá underground hot water cave and the Hverarönd fumarole fields, with their steaming vents.

Visit the Game of Thrones mountain

Game of Thrones fans will love this trip to Iceland’s stunning Snæfellsnes peninsula and the iconic Kirkjufell Mountain, which features as Arrowhead Mountain in the series.

Take a tour to see the Game of Thrones mountain on Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula

The tour also takes in the beautiful black church at Búðir, Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall and the Snæfellsjökull glacier.

Hike and swim in a thermal pool

One of our favourite private super jeep tours in Iceland, this off-road trip includes a two-hour hike through the Landmannalaugar geothermal area , a dip in a thermally-heated natural pool plus a trip to Hekla, one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes.

You’ll also stop off at Hnausapollur crater with its blue volcanic lake and the waterfalls of Sigöldufoss and Hjálparfoss.

It’s also good to know that when you choose Nordic Visitor, you can Book With Confidence , safe in the knowledge that your payments are protected. To find out about our booking process, payments and more, please read our FAQs and booking terms .

1. IS ICELAND SAFE TO VISIT?

Iceland is among the safest countries in the world. It has a first-rate health system that is consistently rated higher than larger countries such as Australia, the USA, and the UK. You can find tips and advice about health and safety in Iceland before you travel.

2. WHAT IS A PRIVATE TOUR?

On a private tour, you and your chosen travel companions will be accompanied by an experienced local guide. They’ll be there throughout your trip sharing their insider knowledge of Iceland with you.

Your guide is chosen specially for you by your dedicated travel consultant, based on your travel needs. We work closely with all of our guides, and each is handpicked to ensure that you’ll have a fantastic trip.

Each day your driver guide will take you to must-see attractions and stunning locations. Along the way they’ll share their favourite hidden gems and passion for Iceland with you, transforming your journey into an insightful experience.

You can also personalise your escorted tour package by adding optional day trips to your itinerary. Plus, if you have something different in mind you can speak to a travel consultant about creating a custom Iceland package that’s specific to you.

If you would prefer to meet other like-minded travellers on your tour, then we recommend checking out these Iceland small group tours .

This involves discovering Iceland in a comfortable minibus driven by your guide. As part of a small group of up to 16 guests, you’ll get to enjoy one-to-one time with your guide.

3. WHY IS A LOCAL TOUR GUIDE SO IMPORTANT?

Having a local tour guide is important as they're able to add an extra layer of authenticity to your travel experience. Not only will your guide help you to see the country from an insider’s perspective, but they’ll also share their favourite spots with you.

So alongside visiting the top attractions, you’ll also uncover hidden gems that only a guide who lives and breathes Iceland would know about. You’ll also learn lots along the way as your guide imparts their knowledge of the country’s rich history, fascinating geology and more.

Plus, you can rest easy knowing that your licensed, expert guide has been selected by us, to meet our high service standards. You’re sure to have the trip of a lifetime.

4. WHAT ARE THE TOP THINGS TO DO ON A PRIVATE TOUR?

There are plenty of things to do on a private tour of Iceland. No matter which trip you choose, you’ll be treated to jaw-dropping views and thrilling activities.

That said, these are some of the things that we think you’ll love the most on a privately guided trip:

  • • Discovering the history and folklore behind the waterfalls, geysers and scenery along the Golden Circle route
  • • Luxuriating in the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon, the country’s most iconic geothermal pool
  • • Marvelling at the natural splendour of the UNESCO-listed national parks: Þingvellir and Vatnajökull
  • • Delving into the sparkling blue ice caves of Langjökull glacier with an expert by your side
  • • Heading deep into the highland region of Landmannalaugar, a hiker’s paradise peppered with hot springs
  • • Learning about the impressive geological forces that are constantly moulding Iceland’s landscapes
  • • Photographing otherworldly volcanic scenery, like moss-blanketed lava fields and black sand beaches

5. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT ICELAND?

The best time of year to visit Iceland depends on where you would like to go and what activities you want to do.

Thanks to Iceland’s distinct seasons, it’s possible to have a different experience travelling in summer, compared to visiting in winter. Happily, this just means that there are more reasons for a return trip to Iceland!

Visit Iceland in summer , from May to September, and you’re more likely to experience better weather and mild temperatures. This makes the summer months ideal for sightseeing in Iceland’s more remote regions. Plus, if you have a private guide, Iceland’s vast highlands are suddenly much more accessible.

The long daylight hours in summer also mean that you can fit more into each day. That said, you’ll set the pace on your tour, so not every day has to be action-packed. For example, you’ll enjoy the midnight sun whether you’re out on a hiking trail or relaxing in a hot spring.

Meanwhile, winter in Iceland offers a different set of experiences. Contrast exploring late into the evening under the midnight sun, with dark winter nights spent chasing incredible displays of the northern lights.

While seeing the aurora isn’t guaranteed, having a local guide with you will increase your chances. You’ll benefit from their in-depth knowledge of the best times and places to see the northern lights in Iceland .

Although winter does bring some additional challenges, such as colder weather, we think the rewards are worth it. Plus, you can relax knowing you’ll have an expert by your side the entire way.

What are some of the best things to do in Iceland in winter ? Think horse riding through the snow, exploring ice caves and soaking up the festive atmosphere around Christmas and New Year.

You’ll find additional information about the seasonal changes to the weather and daylight hours in these guides:

  • • Iceland's climate and weather conditions
  • • Iceland's time and daylight hours

6. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED TO VISIT ICELAND?

You can enjoy an introduction to this astonishingly varied country with as few as 4 or 5 days in Iceland . That said, for a more immersive experience, it’s best to stay for 1 week to 10 days .

Plus, the longer you stay, the more bewitched you’ll become by Iceland’s vast icecaps, breathtaking national parks and geological wonders.

At Nordic Visitor we know that your pace of travel also matters. For instance, while packing a lot into every day can be tempting, you don’t want to feel rushed.

That's why these vacation packages have been tested by our local travel experts. They’ve made sure that our itineraries strike the right balance to give you a fulfilling visit every time.

Check out our offering of expert-curated private tours in Iceland to find the perfect trip for you. That said, don’t hesitate to get in touch if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for. Whether you’d like to create a bespoke itinerary or extend your stay in Iceland, our local travel experts are there to help.

To find out more, you can read this blog on how many days you need in Iceland .

7. WHEN WILL I MEET MY GUIDE?

When you first arrive in Iceland, a private transfer will be waiting to take you to your hotel in comfort and style. You’ll then meet your guide on the second day of your trip, once you’re rested and refreshed after travelling.

This also gives you a full day in Reykjavík to relax and enjoy taking in the city on your own at the start of your adventure.

8. DO YOU TIP TOUR GUIDES IN ICELAND?

Tipping is generally not expected in Iceland, so providing a gratuity is entirely up to you. Of course, if you’d like to show your gratitude with a tip, we’re sure your guide will appreciate it.

9. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

Yes, you can choose the arrival date that suits you best, based on the trip and time of year. Each tour has an online availability calendar, so once you’ve decided on the right trip for you, simply select your preferred start date.

Escorted summer tours are possible from May to October. Please note, trips that venture to remote regions, including the Icelandic highlands, have a shorter season, from July to September.

Meanwhile, you can begin a winter package anytime you like between October to April. Although, it’s worth bearing in mind that we don’t offer guided tour packages over Christmas and New Year.

For up-to-date availability, please check the online calendar for the tour you are interested in.

10. CAN I CUSTOMISE MY TOUR?

Yes, of course! A privately guided tour is the ideal choice if you’re looking for a special travel experience that can be tailored to suit your needs.

Simply get in touch with us, and a Reykjavík-based travel expert will work with you to craft your ultimate bespoke Iceland itinerary .

This is also the time to let us know if there are any specific interests that you’d like to explore on your trip. For example, are you a foodie, a history-buff, or an aspiring photographer? If so, we’ll do our best to match you up with a guide who has expertise in this area.

While our travel consultants will happily help you to customise your tour, it’s also possible to tailor your trip when booking online. You can opt to extend your stay with extra nights in Reykjavík, giving you more time to appreciate the city’s vibrant cultural scene.

If you decide to book your tour online, you can also add a variety of group and private day tours to your itinerary. If you’re not sure what excursions are right for you, or want to know more, you can speak to our travel experts.

While each tour package is different, all of these optional activities have been handpicked to complement your private trip itinerary. For instance, you could take a super jeep into the highlands, kayak on a glacier lagoon, or soar over volcanoes on a helicopter ride.

For more information, or if you have something specific in mind, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us to ask about tailor-made Iceland tours.

11. WHEN SHOULD I ORGANISE MY FLIGHTS?

We advise checking flights for availability, but holding off on purchasing them until after your tour package is booked. Once your trip is confirmed by email, you can go ahead and finalise your flights.

Please get in touch with us if you have missed out on flights and we’ll do our best to accommodate a change of dates.

12. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY PRIVATE TOUR?

Iceland is renowned for having changeable weather, so you’ll want to make sure that you’re prepared, come rain or shine.

Warm layers, along with a waterproof jacket and trousers, are essential year-round items in Iceland. Having these to hand while you’re out and about means that even if the sun isn’t shining you won’t miss out.

As part of your escorted trip you’ll visit some of the country’s most beautiful natural attractions. Most of the time, a short walk accompanied by your guide, will be the best way to appreciate your stunning surroundings. So we recommend bringing sturdy walking boots or shoes with a good grip for hiking.

During winter, October to April, you’ll need to wrap up warm with extra layers as temperatures can drop below freezing. Meanwhile the summer months, from May to September, bring milder weather. This means that you’ll want to pack sunscreen and some lighter layers.

If you’ll be heading to the renowned Blue Lagoon, or any other geothermal pools, make sure to remember swimwear and sandals. Plus, if you plan to visit any lesser-known hot springs it’s also worthwhile throwing in a quick-drying travel towel.

Below you’ll find a basic packing list that will serve you well from the south coast of Iceland to the country’s northern reaches. Find out more about what to bring with you according to the season in our Iceland packing guide .

  • Walking boots or shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Insulated jacket
  • Woollen or fleece jumpers
  • Thermal base layers
  • Warm hat, scarf and gloves
  • Warm hiking socks
  • Quick-drying travel towel
