top day trips from hiroshima

Located on the island of Honshu, Hiroshima prefecture offers exciting historic sights and nature escapes for anyone looking to take some time away from the capital. Whether you are interested in maritime history, forest bathing, a sake tasting, or temple complexes, you'll be thrilled by some of the offerings of the diverse prefecture—all easily accessed within a couple of hours of Hiroshima city.

Sandankyo Gorge: Waterfalls and Forest Trails

While you're in the city, be sure to plan a visit Sandankyo Gorge, one of Japan's top five special valleys of special beauty. It's a favorite for those looking to escape the city and do some hiking, with trails taking anywhere from two to five hours to trek. In addition to forest trails, travelers to the gorge will also be treated to waterfalls and natural pools.

Getting there: The express bus (¥1440) leaves Hiroshima Bus Center at 8:18 a.m., and takes approximately 80 minutes to get to Sandankyo Gorge. The return bus leaves the gorge at 3 p.m. If you want to stay longer, there are local buses (¥1230) departing at 3:30, 4:30, and 5:55, and 7:10 p.m. Note that these take two-plus hours and will drop you off at Kabe JR Station; from there, you can transfer to a train headed towards Hiroshima.

Travel tip: From April through November, you can take a short boat ride through the Kurofuchi pool and visit the restaurant on the other side.

Naoshima Island: Go Art Museum Hopping

Ruben Earth/ Getty

A longer day trip from Hiroshima, the art island of Naoshima is very worth the journey. Few places boast as many art museums as this small island—and that’s aside from the art installations scattered across its 5.49 square miles, including Yayoi Kusama's iconic "Yellow Pumpkin." There are free buses that take you to Naoshima's major sites, or you can rent a bike. Don’t miss the Art House Project or Ando Museum .

Getting there: You will need to take the 40-minute bullet train to Okayama Station, then transfer to a JR train en route to Uno Station. When you arrive, make your way to Uno Port, where there's a ferry that can get you to Naoshima in 20 minutes. Allow yourself around 2.5 hours to complete the trip.

Travel tip: Note that many of the museums are closed on Monday, so it’s best to plan around that.

Sensuijima Island: A Wellness Retreat

fpdress / Getty

Sensujima is a lush, uninhabited island of natural beauty that provides the ultimate wellness escape, whether you’re looking to take a dip in the ocean or relax in a steaming cave bath. You'll also find a few hiking trails through forested landscapes, as well as a coastline path where you can admire the unusual, multicolored rock formations that dominate the island.

Getting there: A bullet train will get you from Hiroshima Station to Fukuyama Station in 25 minutes. You will then transfer over to a bus bound for Tomonoura Harbour, which takes approximately 30 minutes. From there, it's a five-minute ferry ride to Sansujima; the ferry departs every 20 minutes and runs from 7:10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Travel tip: There are shops on the island, as you arrive, where you can pick up drinks and snacks.

Onomichi: Buddhist Temples, Cats, and Ramen

Onomichi is an ideal Hiroshima day trip if you love history, culture, and coastline. The city is most famous for its Temple Walk that connects 25 Buddhist temples, including the must-see Tennei-ji and Senko-ji. Book lovers, meanwhile, will want to follow The Path of Literature to see the 25 monuments honoring Japan's great writers and poets. And don’t miss out on Neko no Hosomichi; a path dedicated to cats, the maneki-neko (lucky cat) museum can be found here.

Getting there: It takes just over an hour on the bullet train to get here from Hiroshima city.

Travel tip: While you're here, be sure to try Onomichi-style ramen; this local specialty is a soy sauce-based broth made with flat wheat noodles, seabura (pork back fat), and locally-caught fish from the Seto Inland Sea.

Miyajima Island: Visit a Famous Floating Shrine

Hiroshima’s most popular day trip, Miyajima Island is also known as Itsukushima after its famous floating shrine. Aside from the shrine, the island has a number of walking trails, including one that takes you to Mount Misen, the island’s highest peak and an important area of worship in Shintoism. While you're, check out the ninth-century Daishō-in temple complex. Meanwhile, endless shopping, street food, and restaurant options can be enjoyed on Omotesando street.

Getting there: From Miyajimaguchi Station, it's a 10-minute ferry ride to Miyajima Island. The ferry costs 180 yen each way; you can use your JR Rail Pass to ride.

Travel tip: You’ll want to leave early to fully enjoy your day on Miyajima.

Yuki Hot Spring: Relaxation in Volcanic Waters

Discovered over 1,500 years ago, this hot spring village is surrounded by a tranquil valley that can be easily enjoyed from its open baths. The valley also supplies many of the ingredients for the seasonal cuisine served at the restaurants in the area. There are several accommodation options, with the most popular being Yuki Lodge .

Getting there : Yuki Hot Spring is less than an hour by bus from Hiroshima Station; the bus runs daily.

Travel tip : You can attend traditional Kagura performances at Yuki Lodge twice a month.

Kure: Explore Japan's Naval History

Jiàn Shan Gang / EyeEm/ Getty

Spend the day by the sea and delve into Hiroshima’s naval history. The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force Museum and the Battleship Yamato Museum , which features a scaled model of the ship itself, are two of the biggest attractions here. If you're looking to imbibe, Kure is also home to a growing craft beer scene and historic sake breweries like Miyake Honten Brewery.

Getting there: It takes just 37 minutes by train to reach Kure, making this one of the quickest Hiroshima day trips if you’re short on time.

Travel tip: Kure is known for its 22 types of navy curry, named for the curry eaten by the Maritime Self Defense Force sailors. You can try JS  Samidare 's version at Seaside Cafe Beacon .

Kumano Town: Learn About Japan's Famous Calligraphy Brushes

Getty/ Faiz Naquiddin Abd Lataf / EyeEm

A fascinating trip from Hiroshima city, the mountain town of Kumano has a long legacy of crafting traditional silky Kumano brushes used for calligraphy and makeup. The majority of Japan’s brushes are handcrafted in this town, a tradition that started in the Edo period when the rise in demand for calligraphy brushes grew with compulsory education. Taking time to visit the Fude-no-sato Kobo Brush Museum is a must as you can learn all about the history of these brushes, try making your own, and see the masters at work.

Getting there : The easiest way to reach Kumano is by car or taxi, which takes 20 minutes.

Travel tip : If you sign up for a brush making class at the Fude-no-sato Kobo Brush Museum one week in advance, you can have your name engraved on your brush.

Explore Takehara: Step Back in Time in This Historic District

Getty/ CHENG FENG CHIANG

Once famous for its salt production, this preserved district has been described as "Little Kyoto" and is a must if you love traditional Japanese architecture and coastal scenery. Takehara is also known for its sake, and you can learn more about the rice wine at the Ozasaya Sake Museum, located inside Taketsuru Sake Brewery. Visitors here often pay a trip to the Saihou-ji temple as well as the district's other museums, including the Takehara City Historical Folk Museum.

Getting there : The bus from Hiroshima Station to Takekara Station will get you there in an hour and 20 minutes. Or, take the train to Mihara Station, then transfer to the JR Kure line bound for Hiro. You'll alight at Takehara Station; if you choose this option, you can plan to reach Takehara in an hour.

Travel tip : Extend your trip and visit Okunoshima, an island famous for its hundreds of wild rabbits.

Day Trip from Hiroshima to Naoshima (Japan's Art Island)

Naoshima Island, also known as ‘Japan’s Art Island’ is an art lover’s paradise. It is definitely one of a kind experience.

However, even if you are not an art or architecture buff, you should still visit the island for the breathtaking views, stunning landscapes, and charming island atmosphere.

It is one of my favorite day trips from Hiroshima!

Intrepid’s Tip:

There is a private guided tour that you might want to look into Naoshima Art Island Guided Tour . It is worth the extra money, in my opinion. The guides are excellent. You will visit Benesse House and Chichu Art Museum. Transport around Naoshima is included as well as a ferry ride from Uno Port to Miyanoura.

How to Get from Hiroshima to Naoshima

First, take Shinkansen from Hiroshima Station to Okayama Station. Next, from Okayama Station , take the local train (JR Uno Line) to Uno, and finally, from Uno take a ferry to Miyanoura .

Once you are on the island, you can practically walk everywhere, or you can rent a bike . There is a local bus that you can take as well. Finally, there is a free shuttle that operates between Miyanoura and Chichu Art Museum.

Make sure to buy JR Pass ! It will save you a lot of money on transportation in Japan. You can buy JR Pass here .

Chichu Art Museum

When I first visited Chichu Art Museum I was in awe by the building’s unique space designed by Tadao Ando.

First of all, the museum is mostly underground. However, a lot of natural light beautifully filters into each room. Depending on the time of the day and the season of the year, the natural light changes the appearance of the artwork and the ambiance of the space.

On permanent display are selected pieces from three masters: Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria.

My favorites are five paintings from the Water Lilies series produced by the great Impressionist painter Claude Monet. In my opinion, this alone is worth going to Naoshima.

Walter De Maria’s artwork is stunning and thought-provoking. It features a sphere and gilded geometric forms.

Don’t miss James Turrell ‘s play on space and light. It is stunning.

If you are visiting during springtime, make sure to stroll by a recreation of Monet’s garden .

For opening hours and entrance fees click here . You can book your tickets online . Make a note that the museum is closed on Mondays.

Benesse House Museum

Benesse House Museum is my favorite museum on Naoshima Island.

The entire facility was designed by Tadao Ando and it houses a modern art museum as well as an exquisite hotel (read about the hotel in Where to Stay in Naoshima section right below).

The complex sits on high ground and overlooks the Seto Sea. Needless to say, the views are simply breathtaking!

The art displayed in and around the museum is a variety of paintings, sculptures, photography, and installations.

The fans of Yayoi Kusama will not be disappointed. Yes! If you are a fan of her giant pumpkins then you are for a treat.

Perfectly positioned and overlooking the Seto Sea is the famous Yayoi Kusama’s ‘Yellow Pumpkin’.

The Art House Project

The Art House Project is a collection of old houses and workshops that have been converted into art installations and venues for contemporary art by artists and architects from Japan and abroad.

The art houses are scattered throughout Honmura village (located on the east side of the island).

By the way, once you get to Honmura Village head straight to The Honmura Lounge. It is located just a few steps away from the bus stop!

The Honmura Lounge serves as an information center for the Art House Project. Here, you will be able to get all the details regarding the artists and architects who are part of the Art House Project.

My three favorites of the Art House Project are Go’o Shrine, Kadoya, Minamidera, and Ishibashi.

  • Go’o Shrine  – Go’o Shrine was designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto . An interesting glass staircase connects the worship hall with an underground chamber and represents unity between heaven and earth.
  • Kadoya – Kadoya is a restored residence that houses the artworks of Tatsuo Miyajima.
  • Minamidera – Minamidera is a structure designed by Ando Tadao. It houses the artwork by James Turrell.

Akakabocha, the ‘Red Pumpkin’ is one of the two installations by famous Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama on Naoshima Island.

The ‘Red Pumpkin’ can be found at Miyanoura Port. Actually, when you step out of the ferry, ‘The Red Pumpkin’ will be right in front of you.

Akakabocha, the ‘Red Pumpkin’ / Day Trips from Hiroshima

Lee Ufan Art Museum

The incredible structure of the museum designed by Tadao Ando houses a collection of only 7 items. The 7 items are by one artist – Lee Ufan .

Be the judge yourself, however, in my opinion, the building and the art pieces are coherent. The entire complex invites you to look in new ways at the surrounding nature and presented art, light, and shadow.

Where to Stay in Naoshima

Benesse House Museum Hotel is my top choice for an overnight stay.

It has Western-style rooms in the Museum, Oval, Park, and Beach buildings. It is expensive, however totally worth it. You get to enjoy magnificent views and furthermore, you can wander around and explore the museum after the closing hours.

Where to Eat in Naoshima

The best choices are either Honmura village or Miyanomura village.

My recommendation is to head straight to Cafe Salon Nakaoku located in Honmura Village .

I have to say that everything I tried at Cafe Salon Nakaoku was delicious. I am recommending that you try miso soup, omurice with tomato sauce, and sauteed octopus. These dishes are my favorites! However, they always have specials of the day, and they are great as well!

The inside is very attractive and cozy with lots of wood elements and quiet places to enjoy your meal.

Day Trip from Hiroshima to Miyajima (The Island of Gods)

If you are looking for a perfect day trip and a little adventure, then Miyajima Island , the “Island of Gods” is a perfect day trip from Hiroshima.

Miyajima is located less than an hour away from Hiroshima  and has an overwhelming range of things to do. In addition, Miyajima Island is one of my favorite day trips from Hiroshima.

How to Get from Hiroshima to Miyajima Island

Let’s start with how to get to Miyajima Island. The good news is that it is super easy! In no time you will be on your way to Miyajima Island day trip.

Trains depart from Hiroshima Station every 15 minutes and will take you to Miyajimaguchi Station . It is about a 30-minute ride from Hiroshima to Miyajimaguchi Station. Once you arrive at Miyajimaguchi Station, follow the signs for the Miyajima Island ferry .

By the way, the ferry is located no more than a 10-minute walk from the station.

Miyajima Island Floating Torii

The number one attraction as well as the symbol of Miyajima Island is a giant torii (gate) . During the high tide, it appears as if the torii is floating out in the sea.

My recommendation is to rent a kayak for a couple of hours and go around and under the torii. You can check Paddle Park for prices and availability. The website is in Japanese. However, if you scroll down, you will get to the English section.

If you are visiting the island during the low tide , you can walk up all the way to the torii and really get the feel of how enormous this structure is.

Miyajima Island

Itsukushima Shrine

Next, head on to Itsukushima Shrine . The shrine was built in 593 and became an important place of worship in about 1168. In 1996 the World Heritage Committee officially inscribed Itsukushima Shinto Shrine as a World Cultural Heritage.

Itsukushima Shrine is well known for its unique construction . It consists of four main areas: the Holy Hall where the gods live (Heiden), the inner part where only the priests enter (Haiden), the external area for worship (Haraiden), and the noh theater stage.

All the sections are connected by numerous boardwalks and supported by pillars above the sea. During the high tide, the shrine looks as if it is floating in the Seto Sea .

Interestingly enough, the reason why the shrine was built out in the sea was that the island was originally thought to be too sacred for commoners to set foot upon.

Daishoin Temple

Daishoin Temple i s about a 10 to 15-minute walk from Itsukushima Shrine and it is well worth the visit.

Founded by Kobo Daishi in 806, Daishoin Temple is the headquarters of the Omuro branch of the Shingon Buddhists.

The path leading to the temple is adorned with thousands of Buddha statues.

These are the statues of the disciples of the historical Buddha, Shaka Nyoria. They all look adorable wearing different colored beanies.

Next, follow the path, which will gradually climb through a beautifully designed garden . The design is so perfect that at the first sight, it is not possible to determine whether it is a man-made garden or a scenery crafted by nature.

Eventually, the path will take you to Daishoin Temple . Make sure to step inside the temple.

The ceiling of the temple is studded with lanterns emitting low warm light. My recommendation is to linger inside the temple for a few minutes and enjoy this peaceful and meditative atmosphere.

Daishoin Temple

The Ropeway

Next, take the ropeway to catch the magnificent views of the island.

The ropeway leaves from Momijidani Station . You can take a bus or you can walk to the station. My recommendation is to walk to Momijidani Station. It is no more than a 10-minute hike up a slight incline. Simply, take the path leading from Itsukushima Shrine to Momijidani Park.

On the way to Momijidani Station, you will pass through Momijidani Park .

Momijidani Park is a hang-out place for the famous Miyajima Island deer . They will be happy to see you and eager to find out if you have any treats. In addition, if you are planning your day trips from Hiroshima during the fall months, then keep in mind that Momijidani Park is one of the most famous maple leaf parks in Japan.

The ropeway goes from Momijidani Station to Kayadani Station . Once you reach Kayadani Station, you will take a second ropeway to your final destination which is Shishiwa Station.

The Shishiwa Station is 430 meters above sea level. The views of the Seto Sea from the station are breathtaking.

Where to Stay in Miyajima

If you decide to spend a night on Miyajima Island, then I am recommending Iwaso Hotel

It is one of the places that I keep coming back to. It is a luxurious Japanese-style hotel. The service is superb and the cuisine is outstanding.

The Iwaso Hotel occupies a traditional wooden building as well as some cottages dating back to 1900. It is situated no more than a 5-minute walk from Itsukushima Shrine and from the Giant Floating Torii.

My recommendation is to experience a traditional kaiseki meal, which is served in your room!

Where to Eat in Miyajima

If you are an oyster lover, then head straight to Yakigaki No Hayashi Restaurant . You will not miss it! First of all, there is always a small line of people waiting for a table, secondly, the smell of the grilled oysters will lead you right to this place.

They have the best selection of fresh oysters. You can choose from boiled, grilled, deep-fried, or raw oysters. All delicious!

Day Trip from Hiroshima to Sandankyo Gorge

A day trip to Sandankyo Gorge is a perfect choice for nature lovers and hikers. It is one of the day trips from Hiroshima that will let you completely escape the busy city life.

How to Get to Sandankyo Gorge from Hiroshima

First, get to Hiroshima Bus Center and purchase a bus ticket bound for Sandankyo Gorge . Next, head to Platform # 7 . Finally, board the bus and get off at the last stop.

The express buses will get you to Sandankyo in about 80 minutes; the local bus will take about 2 hours before you get to Sandankyo.

My recommendation is to take the 8:18 am express bus. It will get you to Sandanyo Gorge by about 9:30 am.

And, take the return express bus at 3 pm. It will get you back to the Hiroshima Bus center at about 4:20 pm.

Things to Do in Sandankyo Gorge

Sandankyo Gorge runs through the mountains northwest of Hiroshima City. It is 13 km long.

The hike runs along the gorge and takes you through the most beautiful natural scenery around Hiroshima.

Personally, I loved this hike. The trail has plenty of ups and downs and the breathtaking scenery changes at every turn.

Sandankyo Gorge

Sandankyo Gorge / Day Trips from Hiroshima

Now, what you need to know is that you can take it as a leisurely stroll and turn back when you had enough of trekking.

Or you can take a full hike , which takes about 5 hours one way and leads up to Hijiri Lake.

The gorge contains five famed scenery spots and it is one of the Top 5 Special Valleys of Scenic Beauty in Japan .

  • Shimaidaki Waterfall (Sister Falls)

The first viewpoint that you will reach is Shimaidaki Waterfall (Sister Falls) . It takes no more than 10 minutes to reach this point.

Shimaidaki Water is actually two waterfalls that flow parallel to each other.

Sandankyo Gorge

  • Tatsunokuchi (Dragon Mouth Torrent)

Next, after about 30 minutes, you will reach Tatsunokuchi (Dragon Mouth Torrent). Here, the water picks up some speed and creates a few rapids.

Sandankyo Gorge

  • Akadaki (Red Falls)

Continue on, and maybe after 10 minutes, and on your right, you will spot a smaller waterfall called Akadaki (Red Falls) . It is a really beautiful waterfall with red soil showing through the cascading water.

After about 1-hour hike from the entrance of the gorge, you will arrive at Meotobuchi.

Meotobuchi is a pool and it is famous for its blue water. It is one of the most scenic spots on the hike. Furthermore, it is also known as one of the most romantic places on this hike.

There is an elevated platform, which gives great views and it is a perfect spot to take some pictures.

Next, you will reach Ishidoi. Here the walls of the gorge narrow, creating a breathtaking point with the river pushing through among high rocks on either side.

Kurobuchi (Black Abyss)

Kurobuchi is one of the most famous spots along this trail. It is a deep pool surrounded by 100–meter-tall rocks.

Sandankyo Gorge

My recommendation is to take a boat ride to Kurobuchiso . It costs 300 yen, and it is totally worth it! The boats run from the end of April through the end of November.

When you reach Kurobuchiso , you should stop for lunch. There is a restaurant Kurofuchi-so where you can taste famous grilled yamame (landlocked salmon) and rice balls cooked in the super soft water of Sandankyo Gorge. The views of the ravine are absolutely splendid here!

Sandankyo Gorge

Next, it all depends on how much time you have! You can continue on the trail up to the remaining key sights of Sarutobi, Nidandaki, and Sandandaki, or head back to the bus stop.

Day Trip from Hiroshima to Takehara (Hiroshima's Little Kyoto) and Okunoshima (Rabbit Island)

What to See in Takehara

Takehara preserved historical town.

Takehara achieved its modest fame and Edo-era prosperity from sea salt cultivation and sake making . At present,  the area is famed for its preserved historical townscape.

The streets of Takehara are lined with traditional wooden buildings going back to the Edo period (1603-1867).

While you are taking a stroll, take a closer look at the buildings and notice the paper-art-like panel lattice . It is called ‘Takehara Lattice’ and it is adorning many buildings.

You should know that Takehara’s old town is designated as an important preservation district of historic buildings.

Day Trip from Hiroshima to Iwakuni

The Kintaikyo Bridge has been Iwakuni’s most distinguished landmark and a subject of admiration for hundreds of years.

However, there is so much more to explore in Iwakuni. Visiting Iwakuni is another of my favorite day trips from Hiroshima.

How to Get from Hiroshima to Iwakuni

Take JR Sanyo Line from Hiroshima Station to Iwakuni Station . It takes about 1 hour to reach Iwakuni from Hiroshima.

Next, take a bus from Iwakuni Station to Kintaikyo Bridge . The bus stop is right outside the station. The trip on the bus takes about 20 minutes.

Once you arrive at Iwakuni Station , make sure to purchase a combination entrance ticket which will include:

  • entrance to cross the bridge
  • ropeway to and from Iwakuni Castle
  • Iwakuni Castle castle admission ticket

Kintaikyo Bridge

Kintaikyo bridge is a magnificent pedestrian wooden bridge. It is made of five massive arches standing atop four stone piers.

Kintaikyo was built in 1673 using only wood ( no metal pins or nails were used in the construction ). Five different types of wood were used in the construction of the bridge – Japanese zelkova, pine, chestnut, oak, and cypress.

Interestingly enough, only samurai were allowed to cross the bridge.

Kintaikyo Bridge kept standing until 1950 when it was destroyed by a typhoon. The reconstruction of the bridge was completed in 1953.

In the early 2000s, Kintaikyo underwent extensive renovations, which cost over two billion yen.

The admission cost to the bridge (round trip over the bridge) is 300 yen. However, if you are continuing to explore the area, then make sure to purchase a combo ticket that includes the bridge, castle, and ropeway.

The entrance to the park is overseen by a statue of Hiroyoshi Kikkawa, the feudal lord who directed the construction of the Kintaikyo.

Inside the park, there are several samurai family-owned houses, however, they are used as private residences and it is not possible to tour them.

As you are strolling through the park, there are places where cormorant birds are housed. If possible, be there around noon when it’s feeding time.

If you happen to be visiting in the summertime, check out the ancient Japanese art of cormorant fishing .

The fishermen dressed in traditional costumes use trained cormorant birds to catch fish. The birds have a ring around their necks that keeps them from swallowing the fish.

It is quite a spectacular event. It takes place in the evening and into the night. The fishermen use torches to lure the fish. You can watch from ashore, or you can join the boat.

The cormorant fishing boats start leaving at around 6:30 pm from a spot next to Kintaikyo Bridge and the fishing starts at around 8 pm.

In addition, there are two museums worth checking out:

  • the Choko-ka – is a library with historical documents and scroll paintings
  • the Kikkawa Museum – is dedicated to the family of warlords, and includes some of their weapons

Next, take the cable car up Shiroyama mountain to the Iwakuni Castle. The views along the way to the top are pretty spectacular !

The top of Shiroyama mountain is a nature preserve. If you have time, then go for a short hike as well.

Iwakuni

Views of Iwakuni / Day Trips from Hiroshima

Iwakuni Castle

Iwakuni Castle was built in 1608. The site of the castle was chosen for its natural defensive advantages. It is perfectly positioned on top of Mount Shiroyama and half surrounded by a natural moat, the Nishiki River.

Interestingly enough, the castle lasted only about 7 years when it was torn down by the decree of Tokugawa Ieyasu .

The present castle was reconstructed in 1962.

Day Trips from Hiroshima

Iwakuni Castle / Day Trips from Hiroshima

Inside the castle, you will find a great display of samurai swords, armor, and other items related to the castle’s history.

In addition, there is a very informative display on Kintaikyo Bridge, as well as other famous bridges across Japan.

Iwakuni Castle

The White Snake Museum

The White Snake Museum has a collection of white snakes , which are native to the Iwakuni area.

Interestingly enough, white snakes can grow to around 1.8 meters in length. They are quite beautiful with red eyes and white or ivory-yellow scales.

White snakes have been designated as national treasures .

By the way, the Japanese revere these animals and believe that they are messengers of Beten, the Japanese goddess of wealth. Also, they are considered a sign of good luck

Admission to the museum is free and for opening hours click here .

Where to Stay in Iwakuni

If you decide to stay the night in Iwakuni, I would recommend that you check out Iwakuni Kokusai Kanko Hotel .

First of all, the hotel is located right by all the main attractions in Iwakuni. Actually, you will be able to see the stunning Kintaikyo Bridge right from your room!

Where to Eat in Iwakuni

Iroro Sanzoku ‘Chicken Shack’ is one of the most popular places to grab a bite while you are visiting Iwakuni.

It is a large sprawling restaurant on the side of a mountain. There is inside dining, as well as open-air dining. If you are visiting during the summer months, then grab a seat under the trees.

They serve grilled chicken on a stick. I recommend that you add a miso soup, rice, or some other accompaniments to complete your meal. My favorite is their Sanzoku Yaki and most definitely their gyoza!

Fab post Anna! You found sooo many fantastic things to do near Hiroshima.

I am most interested in Sandankyo Gorge. I have been to Hiroshima quite a few times, but somehow that never came onto my radar. It looks beeeautiful though! I would love to visit Bunny Island and Naoshima too. Dammit, Japan has sooo much to see!

' src=

Thank you, Josy! I apologize if I misspelled your name in my previous responses. You know, you are so right, I have traveled the world, yet I am still writing about Japan. And, if you asked me: where would you like to go next? I would say, I need to go back to Japan to explore some more.

Lol I am exactly the same. I keep needing to go home to the UK (to visit new babies) but I want to visit Japan again and again!! I really miss living there. <3

Wonderful post – thank you for sharing. Sadly, we did not have time to visit Hiroshima on our trip to Japan a few years ago.

I see! Well, maybe next time?

' src=

Unbelievably fascinating! I didn’t know Hiroshima would be this interesting. I love the yellow pumpkin most of all. So definitely Naoshima Island for me. But the Iwakuni bridge is also special. Never mind the white stankes.

Hi Carol! Thank you for your comment! Hiroshima and the area around Hiroshima is definitely worth exploring.

' src=

I heard a lot about how Japan is a great country to visit! I really wish to go there someday and this island sounds a great place to spend time with family. I love how their are lots of things to do here and the foods you mentioned here is to die for. I love Japanese foods and their healthy options!

Thank you for your comment, April! I am sure you will go to Japan one day!

' src=

10 Best Day Trips from Hiroshima

Zimmin Around the World

Zimmin Around the World

Hiroshima is one of Japan’s most well known cities, for obvious reasons. Hiroshima does have a dark past but this city rose from the ashes to become a beautiful,  lively, and well respected city.  Hiroshima City is an easy city to explore with most of the attractions being within walking distance from the Peace Memorial Park and Hiroshima Castle. Hiroshima deserves minimum one day of exploring if not two. After successfully visiting what Hiroshima has to offer there are so many day trips from Hiroshima that are worthwhile. Just a couple of hours or less, you can see towns and attractions like the Floating Torri Gate at Miyajima or take a ferry to Okunoshima and pet hundreds of wild rabbits. In this post, I’ve outlined 10 of my favorite day trips from Hiroshima.

10 Day Trips from Hiroshima

I used to live in  Iwakuni and have frequented Hiroshima many times. Since living in Okinawa, I’ve traveled to Hiroshima a few times and have explored Hiroshima and the surrounding prefectures extensively. The 10 day trips from Hiroshima listed below are my most recommended trips from the city of Hiroshima. The list includes everything from nature to larger cities. The day trips listed below are in order from closest to farthest away from Hiroshima.

1. Miyajima

Day Trips from Hiroshima

About 21 Km or 25 minutes south of Hiroshima is  Itsukushima, otherwise known as Miyajima. Miyajima can be accessed from Hiroshima by car or street car. Once at the ferry port, it is a quick 10 minute ferry ride to the island of Miyajima.

Miyajima is considered to be one of Japan’s 3 most scenic sites and is home to Itsukushima Jinja Otorii (Grand Floating Torii Gate). The Floating Torii Gate is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is built in the water. Depending on the tides but at high tide the Torii Gate appears to be floating in the ocean.

Miyajima deserves a day in itself. For a small island, there is so much to do and see here. For people that love hiking, you can hike to the top of Mt. Misen and get amazing panoramic views of the area to include Hiroshima City off in the distance. One of my all time favorite temples in Japan, Daisho-in is at Miyajima and the beautiful Toyokuni Shrine and 5-storied Pagoda is not to be missed.

You might notice to that there are a lot of wild deer at Miyajima. The deer are cute and small and many tend to hang out near the ferry port and town area. Be cautious as they tend to sneak food from people not paying attention. Like all wild animals you may encounter in nature. Don’t feed them and enjoy them from a distance, although easier said then done!

24 Km or 30 minutes from Hiroshima is the port city of Kure. Kure is an easy drive from Hiroshima, but visitors can also take the Kure Line from Hiroshima Station. There is also a ferry that goes back and forth between Hiroshima Port and Kure.

If you love maritime museums then Kure is right down your alley! Kure is home to the JMSDF Kure Museum and Kure Maritime Museum. It’s worth it to walk around the port area, you might catch a glimpse of some of the ships and submarines docked.

top day trips from hiroshima

Iwakuni, my second home is one of the most recommended places to visit if staying in Hiroshima. Iwakuni is very accessible from Hiroshima by either car or train.

Iwakuni deserves a day to explore. There are many famous sites around the Iwakuni area to include the Kintai Bridge, Iwakuni Castle, and Kikko Park. Don’t forget to try an unusual ice cream flavor at one of the ice cream shops near the Kintai Bridge.

For more information on Iwakuni, whether it be sites to see, restaurants to try, stunning hikes, or just general tips and recommendations, I have a post series, Guide to Iwakuni .

4. Takehara

top day trips from hiroshima

About 1 hour away from Hiroshima is the quaint and quiet town of Takehara. Takehara is one of the towns Jill and I stopped in for a quick breather while on our bike trip after  cycling the Shimanami Kaido .

Takehara has a historical district with traditional buildings dating back to the Edo period. Saihoji Temple was a highlight of our brief stop in Takehara. Saihoji Temple is a Buddhist Temple built on the hillside.

5. Rabbit Island

top day trips from hiroshima

Okunoshima, better known as  “Rabbit Island” , is a popular tourist destination especially for families with younger children.

Just over an hours drive from Hiroshima is Tadanoumi Port. From here, visitors can take a quick 12 minute ferry ride to Okunoshima. Once on the island, the rabbits that call Okunoshima home are the stars of the show. There are approximately 900 wild rabbits here and they are all adorable! In fact, you can purchase rabbit food at Tadanoumi Port to feed the little bunnies.

The rabbits are scattered throughout the island, there is a nice trail that circulates the island, so make sure to keep food for some of the rabbits that are farther from port. The rabbits are quite friendly, they have no problem with ganging up on us humans to beg for food and pets.

There are also WWII sites around the island, a hotel, museum, and a café/restaurant.

728*90

6. Onomichi

top day trips from hiroshima

Onomichi is a popular destination, mainly due to the fact that it is the beginning or ending location for the  Shimanami Kaido . Onomichi does make for a great day trip from Hiroshima as there is plenty to do and see here. Driving distance is about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Hiroshima. There is also a train that connects the cities.

Onomichi lies on the Seto Inland Sea but is surrounded by hills and mountains. The town is somewhat built on the hillside, so be prepared to walk!

When in Onomichi, it is recommended to visit the temples and Cat Alley. Cat Alley is a part of town that has become popular amongst cat enthusiasts due to the many stray but well cared for cats and the many cat themed cafes and decorations here.

7. Fukuyama

top day trips from hiroshima

Not far from Onomichi and one of my favorite day trips from Hiroshima is a visit to the Castle town of Fukuyama. Fukuyama is accessible by train, shinkansen, and driving.

I love Fukuyama, because it is the perfect day trip destination. There is just enough to do here for an entire day but I feel two days is a bit much unless planning on visiting outside attractions

My main recommendation for Fukuyama is to visit Fukuyama Castle. The castle here is not original but still impressive and the ground surrounding the castle are gorgeous.

I also recommend a visit to Kusadoinari Shrine. Kusadoinari Shrine is unique because of the architecture and color.

8. Bihoku Hillside Park

top day trips from hiroshima

About 1 hour and 20 minutes from Hiroshima is Bihoku Hillside Park. This is a nice day trip from Hiroshima as it’s something completely different then cities and towns like the other trips on the list.

Bihoku Hillside Park has a great mix of flower fields, open air museums, nature walks, plenty of playgrounds and activities for kids.

For an up to date list of attractions and events, it is recommended to visit the National Bihoku Hillside Park Website .

9. Kurashiki

top day trips from hiroshima

One of the more underrated destinations in Japan and an easy day trip from Hiroshima is the historic canal town of Kurashiki.

Kurashiki is an ancient merchant town that is built up around canals. Kurashiki is very walkable as most the attractions are centered around the canal district.

My main recommendation for Kurashiki is to simply walk around the historic down center, walk the small alley ways, hike up to the shrines on the hillside, and maybe take a canal tour if that is your thing! There are many souvenir shops within the historic center and great restaurants!

728*90

10. Okayama

top day trips from hiroshima

Just over a 2 hour drive from Hiroshima is the city of Okayama. Okayama is a large city that deserves a minimum of a day to explore if not a couple, but you can easily see the highlights in a single day trip from Hiroshima. The main highlights of Okayama include Okayama Castle and Korakuen Garden.

Okayama Castle is known as the Crow Castle because its black color. I consider this to be one of the most beautiful castles in Japan but the inside is a bit of a let down. The inside of the castle is modern and as no real castle vibe to it, I’d recommend just enjoying it from the outside.

Korakuen Garden is considered to be one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan.

top day trips from hiroshima

Whether you are interested in seeing the Floating Torii Gate at Miyajima or petting cute rabbits at Rabbit Island, there are many day trips from Hiroshima that allow visitors to explore the surrounding region. If you are in to nature, WWII history, or simply want to see more of Japan, these day trips from Hiroshima are highly recommended.

Top 10 Day Trips From Hiroshima

Trip101

static.trip101.com

Hiroshima is a city with a LOT of personality, and plenty of great stuff to see and do. It's a pretty compact city, which makes sightseeing easy and convenient. It's also quite close to many other excellent local areas, which makes it the perfect base to plan some day trips.

10. Kintai Bridge

10. Kintai Bridge

https://static.trip101.com/paragraph_media/pictures/001/768/984/large/1280px-Kintai_Bridge.jpg?1577422021

This historical wooden arch bridge is a popular tourist spot. Located in the small town of Iwakuni, the bridge is hundreds of years old and the five arcs cross the Nishiki River. This bridge has a special history that began with its construction under the commission of Kikkawa Hiroyoshi, the third feudal lord. It was completed in 1673 and stood proud until 1950 when a typhoon damage and neglect led to its collapse. The local residents were disheartened at the thought of their beloved bridge crumbling and so, stone by stone, wooden plank by wooden plank, they rebuilt an exact replica which was finished in 1953.

9. Fukuyama Castle

9. Fukuyama Castle

https://static.trip101.com/paragraph_media/pictures/001/768/983/large/Fukuyama_castle_the_keep.jpg?1577422020

This was one of the last castles to be built in the Edo Period. It is worth noting that the one you will see now is a postwar reconstruction. There is a small museum onsite which showcases the local history. This spot is particularly popular during the spring as many people come to see the cherry blossoms. The castle is inside a park area with many other museums and sites nearby so we think it is a great place to spend a day exploring. From the top floor of the castle you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area.

8. Yamato Museum

8. Yamato Museum

https://static.trip101.com/paragraph_media/pictures/001/768/982/large/800px-1-10_Yamato_model%252C_Yamato_museum.jpg?1577422020

This insightful museum will give you first-hand experience of shipbuilding and offer you the local history of Kure. The first and second floors showcase the history of Kure and the difficult lives that the inhabiting shipbuilders had. We’d recommend heading straight to Yamato Hiroba, a one-tenth scale model of the battleship. Regardless of whether you are interested in shipbuilding or not, this model which measures 26 meters (86 feet) is fascinating. The focus of the third floor is shipbuilding technology and on the fourth floor, you can enjoy the view from the observation room.

7. Sensui Island

7. Sensui Island

https://static.trip101.com/paragraph_media/pictures/001/768/981/large/800px-Sensui_Jima_harber.JPG?1577422020

This small island, also known as Sensuijima , is an absolute must-see if you are in the area during the summer months. Note that during winter it might seem like you are the only people on the island. During summers, there are ice creams, holidayers and yet a very peaceful atmosphere. We’d recommend walking the coastal line to enjoy all the sights of the island. There are a few restaurants and hotels on the island, so if you are looking for a romantic getaway for a few days, Sensui Island might be your ideal destination. The most popular spot on the island is the Five-Color Crag. At this geographical crag, you can see black, red, blue, yellow and white rock formations. Apparently, it is also a power spot on the island.

6. Tomonoura

6. Tomonoura

https://static.trip101.com/paragraph_media/pictures/001/768/980/large/800px-Tomonoura_%25285827269804%2529.jpg?1577422019

This old fishing town is the perfect place to spend a few days relaxing and enjoying the traditional atmosphere. Thanks to its special location and scenery, Tomonoura has even been featured in blockbuster movies, such as Wolverine. The old wooden slatted facades in the front of the house are reminiscent of other popular places such as the infamous Gion area of Kyoto. For the best views of the area head to Fukuzenji Temple. From the temple, you can sit and enjoy the breathtaking scenery that spans across the bay in front of you. Another good spot to visit is Ankokuji Temple which features tropical plants and important cultural statues.

5. Shimanami Kaido

5. Shimanami Kaido

https://static.trip101.com/paragraph_media/pictures/001/768/979/large/800px-Shimanami_Kaido_Bikeway_%252814105053043%2529.jpg?1577422018

If you’re interested in cycling or want to experience the beautiful scenery surrounding Hiroshima, we think the perfect way to do so is to hire a bike and ride along Shimanami Kaido, also known as Nishiseto Expressway. This 37-mi (60 km) road connects Japan’s main island to Shikoku passing the small island that surrounds Seto Inland Sea. You can also walk the route, but remember to pack plenty of water. Shimanami Kaido was officially opened in 1996 and is now a popular tourist route across the islands. Be sure to stop along the route to enjoy beautiful views and insta-worthy photos. See the rest of the exciting entries on the list in the full article from Trip101 via the link below.

What GAFFL Users Are Saying

Marie

"It’s really nice to have a platform like GAFFL with lots of travelers wanting to do the same as you, a real beautiful cultural exchange. You can meet people so easily and in a trustful way. We were four girls, from French, German and American backgrounds, without knowing each other from before. We spent an amazing week together, 2000km driving, camping on the way. We saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins and pelicans"

Saed

“I have found GAFFL to be an amazing tool for finding similar minded travel partners to embark on an adventure. Through GAFFL, I had organized a trip to Mexico City last month and Quazi joined the trip from Victoria, BC. We spent 14 days of straight exploring, hiking, eating and drinking. Quite an amazing experience - all thanks to GAFFL!”

Scarlett

"I accidentally scrolled across GAFFL and I'm so pleased I did. I met Amaia and immediately decided to road-trip together. We're spending 10 days together and it's great because we have so much in common. Couldn't have done it without GAFFL helping us find one another! It has honestly made NZ so much cheaper to explore as I get to split the costs with someone too"

Besides its beautiful location, Hiroshima is also a famous place in history, being one of the two cities where atomic bombs were dropped during WWII. Traces of the tragedy are found and honored everywhere in the city center.

Hiroshima is not far away from Kyoto or Osaka and even a one-day trip from both Kyoto or Osaka to Hiroshima is easy enough to do and worth your time, though you can easily spend multiple days in the bustling city.

Must-visit spots in Hiroshima are Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima and Atomic Bomb Dome in the Peace Memorial Park. We make a one-day itinerary for you around those spots!

top day trips from hiroshima

Hiroshima is located only 100-120 minutes away from Kyoto and 80-100 minutes away from Osaka by Japan’s well-known  Shinkansen,  also known as a bullet train.

If you have  Japan Rail Pass,  you can take the Shinkansen without any additional costs. However, please note that there are Shinkansen you can’t take with Japan Rail Pass such as  Nozomi  or  Mizuho . Besides these two, you can take pretty much all other bullet trains. Also, you take local trains but this will add another 5-6 hours, so we would recommend taking the Shinkansen to save your time – and have more time for exploring Hiroshima.

If you don’t have Japan Rail Pass and you can take any Shinkansen, then we recommend you to take Nozomi or Mizuho Shinkansen, because it is easy to go to Hiroshima from Kyoto and Osaka without any transit.

Suggested itinerary in Hiroshima & Miyajima

To make the most out of your one-day visit to Hiroshima, we recommend you arrive there around 9-10 am. If you take the Shinkansen around 7-8am from Kyoto or Shin-Osaka Station, you will arrive in Hiroshima in time.

Shinkansen station Osaka

The first destination is Miyajima ! Once you arrive at Hiroshima Station, take the JR Sanyo-honsen line to Miyajimaguchi Station (about 25 minutes). You can also get to Miyajima by Hiroshima Electric Railway as a cheaper option though it takes longer (about 70 minutes). We recommend you take JR line, especially if you have the JR Pass since it covers this train.

Miyajima ferry Hiroshima

Miyajima is an island so we have to take a ferry to get there. After you arrive at Miyajimaguchi Station, walk to the ferry port. There are two companies operating ferries to Miyajima: JR and Matsudai Kisen. If you have JR Pass, take the JR ferry because you can be on board without any additional charge. If not, you can choose either one and the price is 180 yen (adult) for a one-way trip.

The fastest way to get to Miyajima is to take the  Hiroshima World Heritage Sea Route  (¥2,000 for a roundtrip) connecting the Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima island directly. This option is more expensive, but you can easily get to Miyajima from downtown Hiroshima in 45 minutes without any transfers. So when you take a day trip to Hiroshima, this will earn you some extra time to use for sightseeing.

The ferry will take you to Miyajima in about 10 minutes. Soon after your departure, you will spot the famous red torii gate which looks like it is floating in the sea when it is high tide. This torii gate is a part of Itsukushima Shrine that is designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites .

Miyajima Shrine Hiroshima

If you have enough time, we recommend you to see both high tide and low tide. Check the  tide time  in Miyajima before your visit and see which time is the best to visit depending on your preference. If the tide level is under 100 meters, you can walk through under the big torii gate, and if it is over 250 meters, you can see the floating shrine and torii gate.

In Miyajima, many deers will give you a friendly welcome. You might know  Nara Park is famous for its cute free roaming deer , but here on Miyajima, you can spot them everywhere too! They aren’t shy of people and will come and greet you. Be careful with your food around these curious creatures though, they may try to steal them from you!

Miyajima Shrine Hiroshima

While waiting for the best tide time, let’s take a walk around the island. From the ferry terminal to the shrine walk along the Omotesando shopping street, this street is the busiest place in Miyajima for souvenir shops and restaurants. The area’s specialty is for its lemons and oysters, you will see them for sale everywhere. As well as the delicious local snack Momiji-Manju, don’t forget to try these local delicacies of Hiroshima.

Shopping street Miyajima

Momiji-Manju is a maple leaf-shaped Japanese sweets which is Japanese sweet filled with red bean paste. There are more fillings like custard, matcha, chocolate or cheese to choose from and also there are fried ones too, something for everyone!

Momiji-Manju, specialty from Miyajima

If you have more time and can stay in Miyajima, we recommend you go hiking in Miyama. There are several hiking trails leading up to the highest point of the island Mount Misen or you can get there by a cable car (¥1,010 for one way, ¥1,840 round trip).

Mt.Misen

The next stop is the Atomic Bomb Dome . To get to this impressive building, take a ferry back to Miyajimaguchi station and then take Hiroshima Electric Railway to Atomic Bomb Dome from Hiroden-Miyajimaguchi station.

Hiroshima Atomic Dome Building

The famous Atomic Bomb Dome is one of the few remaining structures after the first ever atomic bomb was dropped in Hiroshima in 1945. The Atomic Bomb Dome is registered as World Heritage Site and is a reminder of the tragedy of 1945 when two atomic bombs were dropped in Japan.

The Atomic Bomb Dome and the city of Hiroshima serve as a reminder to all of us today, that we should never experience such tragedy again. Each year on August 6 at 8:15, the exact time the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945, a memorial service is held at the Memorial Park. Hiroshima wants us never to forget about the disaster of 1945 and pray for world peace. As the city’s slogan goes: Never Hiroshima again!

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

When time permits, we definitely recommend a visit to the Peace Memorial Museum. It tells the story in an impressive and memorable way. It will be life-changing experience and something important you will remember from the trip. The entrance fee for the museum is set at ¥200.

Hiroshima Day Trip and Hiroshima Walking Tour

Hiroshima was tragically the site of the world’s first atomic bomb in 1945. When visiting Japan, it’s easy to take a day trip to Hiroshima from Osaka or Kyoto. Hiroshima is relatively small, which makes it the perfect place to explore on foot. I’ve designed a Hiroshima walking tour to cover the main Hiroshima attractions in just one day. However, if walking’s not your jam, you can also get between the sites by bus, subway or taxi.

Why Take a Hiroshima Day Trip?

Sometimes, I like to walk around wearing rose-tinted glasses that block out the horrors of our world. I wasn’t exactly sure how I’d feel about being confronted by Hiroshima’s nuclear history. While visiting Hiroshima was upsetting (to put it mildly), I am glad that I took a day trip to Hiroshima.

Yup, a visit to Hiroshima is emotional . It’s harrowing. It’s moving. Yet it can also be strangely uplifting, and can leave you with a cautious sense of hope. The atomic bomb has left an indelible scar on the city of Hiroshima, and the city acts as a living memorial to the horrific impact of atomic warfare. But this is also a city rebuilt. A city united. A city dedicated to eliminating nuclear war.

I can be a delicate petal, so was pleased to discover that there’s things to do in Hiroshima in addition to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. My Hiroshima itinerary balances the raw devastation of the atomic bomb with other Hiroshima city sights.

How to Get to Hiroshima

Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome

Hiroshima’s central location means that it works really well in a Japan itinerary . The best bases for a day trip to Hiroshima are Osaka and Kyoto, as the bullet train (Shinkansen) only takes around 1.5 hours each way. See the West Japan Rail site  for timetable details.

There’s also a regular train from Osaka or Kyoto to Hiroshima, but this takes 6-7 hours and involves multiple transfers. Probably only recommended for long term and penny-pinching travelers!

Hiroshima from Osaka

You can get from Osaka to Hiroshima on the bullet train in around 1 hour 30 minutes. Take the Sanyo Shinkansen line from Shin-Osaka Station to Hiroshima Station.

If you have a Japan Rail Pass  (which is the best value if you’re doing a couple of bullet train trips), use the Sakura service which takes around 1 hour 30 minutes or the Hikari service which takes around 2 hours 15 minutes. If you don’t have a JR Pass, you can also take the slightly faster Mizuho or Nozomi train to Hiroshima from Osaka at around 1 hour 25 minutes.

Hiroshima from Kyoto

If your Kyoto itinerary is a few days or more, then it’s absolutely worth taking a day trip to Hiroshima, and surprisingly doesn’t actually take much longer than travelling from Osaka to Hiroshima.

You can get from Kyoto to Hiroshima on the bullet train in around 1 hour 40 minutes. Take either the Sanyo Shinkansen or the Tokaido Shinkansen from Kyoto Station to Hiroshima Station.

If you have a JR Pass, you can use the Hikari or Sakura services which may require a transfer in Osaka, making a total one way trip time of around 2 hours. If you don’t have a JR Pass, you can also take the Nozomi service direct to Hiroshima from Kyoto.

Hiroshima from Tokyo

If you’re visiting Hiroshima from Tokyo, it is best to stay overnight in Hiroshima as the train from Tokyo to Hiroshima takes around 5 hours. Even better, add Osaka to your Japan itinerary, as you need to transfer via Osaka (or another station in the region) to reach Hiroshima from Tokyo.

Overview of Hiroshima Itinerary

Children’s Peace Monument at Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Japan

Children’s Peace Monument at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

Hiroshima Attractions Visited

For the first part of your Hiroshima day trip, you can almost forget (at least temporarily) that you’re walking across a city which was virtually flattened by the world’s first atomic bomb in 1945.

This Hiroshima 1 day itinerary eases you into things with a visit to Japanese gardens and a castle, followed by the (devastating) Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, ending with time to decompress and look around the city.

Hiroshima Walking Distance

The Hiroshima walking tour below has around 10-12km walking. This includes 7 km between stops and another few km walking around the Hiroshima attractions. You can cut out a fair amount of the walking time with buses, the subway and taxis if you prefer.

Disclaimer: My walking tally was closer to 12km, but I spent a good 1.5km of that lost.

Lesson: Plan your Hiroshima walking route in advance with Google Maps!

Time Required for Hiroshima 1 Day Itinerary

All up, a day trip to Hiroshima will take around 10-12 hours .

This does make for a rather exhausting but fulfilling day. If you have more time to spend in Japan, you can also stay overnight in Hiroshima. If you have time, add in nearby Miyajima Island, which is famous for Itsukushima Shrine, a massive orange torri gate.

Transfers to Hiroshima

The bullet train to Hiroshima from Osaka or Kyoto takes roughly 1.5 hours each way / 3 hours return , or longer if you’re taking a slower Shinkansen.

If you are not staying near the Shinkansen station, you’ll need to factor in additional time to get to and from the station. I was staying in Shinsaibashi Osaka, and it took around 30 minutes to get from Shinsaibashi to Shin Osaka where the bullet trains departs from (15 minute train, plus walking / ticket buying time / getting lost in the station time).

Time in Hiroshima

Allow 6 – 8 hours  door to door from Hiroshima Station for your Hiroshima one day itinerary, including walking, exploring and lunch time.

My Hiroshima self-guided walking tour took me 6 hours. My breakdown was roughly 2 hours for the garden, castle and shrine, 2 hours for the Memorial Peace Park, and 2 hours for lunch and the city. You may need longer than 6 hours if you walk slowly, love museums, like to take regular rests, or are traveling in a group (I was traveling to Hiroshima solo).

You can of course drop some Hiroshima activities if you prefer a shorter day, or take taxis, buses or the local subway between stops.

Hiroshima Walking Tour – Map and Directions

Hiroshima Walking Tour Map for Day Trip to Hiroshima

This Hiroshima walking route follows a round circuit of the city. The map and directions are available on Google Maps . Each stop is detailed below.

You don’t need to strictly follow the Hiroshima map route. In fact, I’d recommend having an aimless wander around the Hiroshima Memorial Peace Park (Stop 5) and Hiroshima City (Stop 6). Hiroshima is small, so if you wander off down an interesting street or get lost (as I did!), you can get back on course quickly by consulting Google Maps.

What to do in Hiroshima

The most popular things to do in Hiroshima are to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome (Stops 4 and 5 below), which are the main memorial sites. You could easily spend an entire day in this area, particularly if you’re a history nut. However, I was keen to get a broader taste of the city, so added in additional stops when I was planning what to do in Hiroshima.

Stop 1: Shukkeien Gardens Hiroshima (Map B)

Shukkeien Gardens, Hiroshima Japan

Overview of Shukkeien Gardens

Start your day in Hiroshima by taking an easy walk from Hiroshima Station to the tranquil Shukkeien Gardens (literally, ‘shrunken’ gardens). The original gardens date back to the 1600s, but were rebuilt after being destroyed by the 1945 atomic bomb.

There’s a path around the entire pond at Shukkeien Gardens, with many islets and bridges. The pond is full of (ridiculously large) colorful koi fish. Buy some koi food and create a feeding frenzy! Allow 30-45 minutes to walk around the gardens and feed the koi.

Walking Distance, Opening Hours and Cost

Distance:  Shukkeien Gardens is around 1.1km walk from Hiroshima Station.

Opening Hours: Shukkeien Gardens is open daily from 9am until 5pm or 6pm, with closing time depending on the season.

Cost:  The entry fee for Shukkeien Gardens is adults Y260 for the gardens and Y100 for koi (fish) food. If you’re into art, check out the Prefectural Art Museum at the gardens, adults Y510.

Stop 2: Hiroshima Castle (Map C)

Hiroshima Castle, Hiroshima Japan

Overview of Hiroshima Castle

Next stop on your Hiroshima day trip is a classic Japanese castle. From Shukkeien Gardens, head slightly north west and you’ll reach Hiroshima Castle in around 10 minutes.

This historic castle was originally a 16th century castle for the feudal lords, and later served as a military facility. As with most local buildings, Hiroshima Castle was destroyed by the atomic bomb blast and was reconstructed in the 1950s.

Walk around the Hiroshima Castle grounds, view the picturesque wooden castle and pay to enter the castle if you want to learn about the castle’s history. The castle includes four floors of historic exhibits and a fifth floor observation deck. I took a quick squiz through the castle but, to be honest, I coulda given it a miss.

Distance:  Hiroshima Castle is around 850 metres walk from Shukkeien Gardens.

Opening Hours: Hiroshima Castle is open daily from 9am to 5pm or 6pm, with closing time depending on the season.

Cost:  Admission to Hiroshima Castle grounds is free. The fee to enter Hiroshima Castle is Y370 for adults.

Stop 3: Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine (Map D)

Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine

Overview of HiroshimaGokoku Shrine

The Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine is in the Hiroshima Castle grounds, on the way to the Atomic Bomb Dome. This Shinto shrine is a place of worship for war casualties, and includes traditional Shinto gates and a temple.

I walked past the Gokoku Shrine and admired the pretty gates, but didn’t go in. (I was getting my temple on the next day in Nara. See my Nara Walking Tour  for deets!)

Distance:  Gokoku Shrine is around 200m walk from Hiroshima Castle.

Hours:  9:00am to 4:30pm. You can walk past the shrine at any time.

Cost:  Free to walk around the shrine grounds. There may be a small entry fee to go inside the shrine.

Stop 4: Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome (Map E)

A-Bomb Dome Hiroshima

Overview of the Atomic Bomb Dome

This is where sh*t starts to get real my friends. Brace yourself, because Hiroshima’s horrific history suddenly gets a whole lot more visual. The A-Bomb Dome is located near the epicenter of the 1945 atomic bomb blast, which exploded 600 meters above this area.

The atomic bomb flattened much of Hiroshima and killed around 60,000 people instantly, 140,000 people by the end of 1945, and tens of thousands more in the following decades. The A-Bomb Dome is the only structure still standing from 1945, which makes it all the more eerie and atmospheric.

You can only walk around the outside of the A-Bomb Dome, so you won’t need a lot of time here.

Distance: The Atomic Bomb Dome is 1.3km walk from Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine.

Hours:  The A-Bomb Dome is always ‘open’, as you can’t actually go inside the gates or the Dome.

Cost: Free.

Stop 5: Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park (Map F)

Cenotaph at Peace Memorial Park Hiroshima Japan

Overview of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

The next stop on your walking tour of Hiroshima is the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. This is the main Hiroshima memorial site, and includes several different memorials and a museum, set out below. Hiroshima Peace Park is the most popular Hiroshima attraction, and is usually the focus of a day trip to Hiroshima.

Hiroshima Outdoor Memorials

Start at the north end of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Your first stop is the outdoor memorials. Walk past the Peace Bell (and give it a satisfying ring), the Children’s Peace Memorial, and the cenotaph where the eternal peace flame burns.

Hiroshima Memorial Hall of Remembrance

After the outdoor memorials, move onto two main indoor activities – the Memorial Hall and the Museum. Veer east from the cenotaph and you’ll find the Hiroshima Memorial Hall of Remembrance.

The Memorial Hall (above) is a moving 360 degree memorial depicting bombed cityscape. The city images are made up of 140,000 tiles, in memory of the number of atomic bomb victims at the end of 1945. (Bonus – entry is free!) This is one of the most visually interesting and moving memorials I’ve visited.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

After the Memorial Hall, walk south to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. The Museum depicts Hiroshima before, during and after the bombings. Watch the survivor video testimonies and check out artifacts like a watch that is permanently stopped at 8:15 am when the bomb hit.

The Hiroshima Museum also traverses the nuclear age post Hiroshima through the Cold War and to current times. This is a city scarred, but also a city on a relentless peace mission to eliminate atomic warfare.

The museum is not light viewing. The history and exhibits are intense and emotional, and many people (me included!) get a little teary and generally in a down mood at the state of our civilisation. Make sure you leave some time in your day to decompress and reflect.

Note: The Main Building at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is closed for renovations and earthquake proofing until later in 2019. During this time, the East Museum is open and houses the main exhibits.

Distance:  Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is a few hundred meters walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome. You’ll probably add around 1km walking around the park, memorials and museum.

Hours: The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is open 8:30am to 5pm or 6pm daily, depending on the season.

Cost:  It is free to walk around Hiroshima Peace Park and the memorials, including the Hall of Remembrance. The entry fee to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is Y200 for adults.

Stop 6: Hiroshima City and (Late!) Okonomiyaki Lunch (Map G)

Hiroshima Okonomiyaki at Okonomimura

Overview of Hiroshima City

By now, you’ll be starving if you haven’t eaten already, and likely in need of some lighter activities after visiting the Hiroshima Memorial Park.

Spend the rest of the day walking through the city streets back to Hiroshima Station. If you’re into shopping, there’s shops galore to stock up on clothing or buy some crazy local Japanese souvenirs. I got distracted by gorgeous kitty-cats in a pet shop, and had some quality snuggle time. A day trip to Hiroshima also wouldn’t be complete without some tasty local treats.

Hiroshima Okonomiyaki

For lunch, try the famous Hiroshima style okonomiyaki, a pancake thingy*, washed down with some beer. (*Pancake thingy made of a flour base, layered with cabbage, sprouts, onions, tempura scraps, pork, noodles, egg and other optional extras. Yup, it’s massive!).

You’ll find okonomiyaki eateries dotted all over Hiroshima city. I had a couple in mind, but was thwarted by a long line at Okonomiyaki-Nagata-ya   and shorter opening hours at Hassei.

I ended up at Okonomimura . Awesome accidental choice me, if I do say so myself. Okonomimura is on the third floor of a pretty nondescript building and has a few small Hiroshima okonomiyaki stalls. Plonk down at one of the stalls, order away, sit around a hot grill, and watch the magic happen.

I spent a good hour or so at Okonomimura resting my tired legs, having a beer, and watching the chefs at work. (And attempting to eat the world’s biggest Okonomiura – evidence above!)

Walking Distance

It’s around 1.2km to walk from Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum to Okonomimura for lunch. You should factor in at least 2km walking total, as you’ll want to meander around the city.

Stop 7: Hiroshima Station (Map H)

Finish your Hiroshima day trip itinerary by walking back to Hiroshima Station (around 1.7km from Okonomimura) or your local accommodation. Local transport is also readily available.

If your legs have had it at any time during the day, jump in a taxi or on the local tram or subway to save a couple of kms walking. My legs were almost gone-burgers towards the end, but I trucked on, determined to finish my walking route of Hiroshima!

This is a great guide to Hiroshima! It was an interesting city to visit. It was haunting to see the A-Bomb done and the memorial museum.

Great guide & it’s on my list to visit when I finally return to Japan. I can totally relate to how you felt – I was the same when visiting the Killing Fields in Cambodia. So tough & emotional to hear about the history but also something that you need to do to even get close to understanding the horrors that wee endured. Thank you for sharing.
