Interview: Wil Wheaton On ‘Lower Decks’ Matching His Star Trek Fan Fiction, Playing Wesley Again, And More

where can we watch The Ready Room in Canada?

Not sure. But you might succeed playing it after first d*wnl*ading it through 9convert.com – just plug in the YT link! Good luck!

I would expect it drop into Star Trek.com and the official Star Trek Facebook page (Chromecast enabled) in the next 24 hrs

I’m guessing you tube maybe?

The global versions are made available at StarTrek.com.

That’s where I watch if from Canada (even though it’s a horrible site on mobile).

It’s not posted there yet, but I would expect it to go up before close of business today in California.

Editing to add – for once the Paramount YouTube version is playable in Canada. Here’s the link: https://youtu.be/QVLxOkm1PeU

The official Star Trek website does post TRR episodes, but this one is not yet posted on the Canadian version of the website. I guess we just have to wait. Alternatively, if you have a VPN, I think you can watch it on YT with a US web address.

Cable 10 Saskatoon Community Access Channel

? Unless you’re in Sask or using a trick to get free cable channels elsewhere (which seems to be a thing), this isn’t really helping.

But it’s weird that the full video didn’t get posted to StarTrek.com by close of business Friday. Not Paramount social media team’s finest moment.

CTV Sci-Fi Channel or streaming on Crave (at least they used to have the eps there).

Only the featurettes are on the CTV app now.

Season one is however finally back On Demand on the CTV Sci-fi channel.

Hey, they’re taking big swings! ;)

She does say that a lot!

HE HE YAY!!!!!!!

I especially enjoyed the interview with Ethan Peck; I loved his comment about how Star Trek is unique in not fearing the unknown or the Other but rather in facing those things or those people with curiosity and open hearts. He truly GETS it! The man who plays Spock should be an intelligent and thoughtful man, and it sounds as if Mr. Peck is.

This felt mostly like a hype video for possible new fans. It was also amusing to hear Wil Wheaton say that S1 of SNW was available only on P+, given that it’s also on YouTube now. :-) Still, I’m already plenty excited about S2 of SNW, so they didn’t need to make a video for me; they needed to make one to attract those who aren’t already eager to watch.

Audience ready, Captain!

I wonder if Wil Wheaton was advised not to promote YouTube carrying the show for free, since that’s only until the end of the month?

Either way, it was nice to get some promo interviews. I really enjoy seeing Ethan Peck talk about his role as Spock, you can just tell he gets it. Hopefully this second season is a lot more Number One heavy than last season.

I wonder if maybe this Ready Room was filmed before they put S1 up on YouTube?

I love, love, love how much Peck gets it! In addition to the stuff I talked about above, I also loved his talking about Spock’s leadership approach. And yeah, more Number One would be nice.

Are the Ready Room writers part of the WGA? If so, this must have been filmed, or at least written, before season 1 was on YouTube.

I believe Wil addressed The Ready Room and the strike on his Facebook page. I’d have to go back and check his exact words, but I know he addressed it.

I found it! He answered this question in the comments of a FB post on June 1st. “ No, our writers aren’t members of the WGA. If they choose to organize, I will fully support them .” The thread is there if you want to read it.

Thanks for looking that up!

You’re welcome. It was bugging me … I was sitting here thinking, “I can’t just leave a vague comment on something I know I’ve read.” I really enjoy The Ready Room , and I enjoy Wil’s enthusiasm, not only as a Trek vet but a fan.

My husband is a professor, and during the height of the pandemic, his university held classes online. He was making videos for the first time in his life, so he looked up some tips for making them. He read a tip that said, “The camera eats your energy, so if you want to come across as enthusiastic, you need to give off twice as much energy as you would in person.

Given how enthusiastic Wil Wheaton looks on video, I can’t IMAGINE how much enthusiasm he must have in person, if that rule is really true! :-)

If you grew up a Trek fan, and then got to be on Trek for a few years, and your cast mates really are like family, then I imagine he has one of the best jobs in the world.

Most likely this is the case. When Wil was on Celebrity Jeopardy he said they were filming the Picard Ready Room episodes. That aired in November 2022 and was filmed in summer 2022.

Ah, thanks. Several months lead time, then!

Say what you what about Will Wheaton, but the dude dresses like a professional for his Star Trek media show — and I respect that! I am getting fatigued with the “slobs in poor fitting t-shirts with bad hair/beard grooming who look like they just rolled out of bed” look that I see on many genre “superfan” internet shows (not Trekmovie).

Except for the shoes. As they say, look at the shoes.

</sartorial wisdom>

It would be great of they actually posted it on facebook for international fans like they said they would.

Facebook isn’t the place for international fans usually – the global versions are normally posted on StarTrek.com.

I just finished EPS 1-9 of S1. I’ll watch 10 on Wednesday. I’m getting ready for a season of “Big Swings!”

Great to hear about new SNW enthusiasts!

If you haven’t run through Prodigy yet, it’s 7 1/2 hours well spent – just keep in mind that it starts out looing and feeling like it’s from another franchise in order to draw in families who have no Trek knowledge.

Agreed, I very much enjoyed the first season of PRO, to my surprise.

Yay! Welcome to Strange New Worlds. I think it’s something special, even within Star Trek, and that’s saying something.

Just so refreshing how it brings back the excitement, discovery and danger of space exploration… space feels new again with SNW. Love the little touches, the monitors, the sounds of the tricorders and sensors, the crew always wondering if they are good enough to face what’s ahead. Can’t wait for season two. Just wish they would bring back the colors on the bridge (slowly seeing some improvement) and the blue phasers (so much better than generic red) but whatever

I still wanna watch it! Why is it not on startrek.com yet??

  • Trivia Bruce Horak , the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

Unfortunately, there are no audio commentary tracks for Season 2’s home media release, but the collection does manage to pack in over two hours of interviews, behind the scenes features, and deleted scenes that cover a lot of ground.

“Exploring New Worlds” (46:30) is a very cut-and-dry exploration of the themes and challenges of Season 2. This doesn’t mean there isn’t something here for fans to enjoy, though; highlights include the fabulous art behind the creation of Cajitar (“The Broken Circle”) to the debut of Martin Quinn as Scotty in “Hegemony.”

What continues to come across in these interviews is how much everyone loves what they’re doing this season: Celia Rose Gooding (Uhura) loved the tension and catharsis of “Lost in Translation”; Jess Bush (Chapel) loves working with Melissa Navia (Ortegas) and Celia; Ethan Peck loves playing around with goofy, silly human Spock (your mileage may vary).

ready room star trek strange new worlds

It’s abundantly clear from Navia’s interview that Ortegas’ subplot in “Among the Lotus Eaters” was incredibly important to her. Even if I have criticisms of it, there’s no questioning that it was a success from the writers’ and actors’ perspectives.

There are some deeply funny bits, too — the thrill of the Lower Decks crossover in “Those Old Scientists” seems to have cut through the cast and crew like a lightning rod. Jack Quaid (Boimler) and Tawny Newsome (Mariner) are gems in their interviews, especially Quaid’s discussion of his process of bringing animated Boimler to life (alongside the, uh, Spoimler ‘bromance’). There are some issues for me, though — not interviewing Paul Wesley about playing the real Jim Kirk is annoying.

Overall, this was a bit more interesting to me than the Season 1 iteration.

ready room star trek strange new worlds

“The Costumes Closet” (13:21) is a bit hit-and-miss. There is a lot of focus on the costuming from Cajitar, with a lot of detail of extra costuming from the great Bernadette Croft. It’s a good description of the worldbuilding that costuming too (a lot more than the writers, it feels like sometimes). The overview of the new dress uniforms designed for “Ad Astra per Aspera” is great (mainly because I love the Strange New Worlds dress uniform!), and it justifies and explains the differences and improvements on the original design.

It is very descriptive and focused on Croft’s team, also touching on Dak’Rah’s outfit (“Under the Cloak of War”) and the costumes for the Rigel VII excursion (“Among the Lotus Eaters”), but tthere doesn’t seem to be much input from the showrunners on costuming ideas.

“Producing Props” (10:46) is pretty dry. This is fine, because it knows you’re here for the props, not the talk. There’s a fair bit of detail on Spock’s Vulcan lyre, as well as the multitude of props required for the Vulcan family rituals from “Charades,” from the boiling kettle through to the gongs of all shapes and sizes.

ready room star trek strange new worlds

“The Gorn” (15:37) is a very descriptive and satisfying insight into the new developments in Gorn design and costuming that were deployed with such effectiveness in “Hegemony.” It was certainly interesting to see how much of the Gorn spacesuit and head inside were physical props; everything from the prehensile tails to the sinister lizard eyes. The use of 3D-printed parts involved was a revelation to me, at least; yet another sign of how the technology is revolutionising costuming completely.

Again, however, there was very little discussion of the writers’ thinking behind the Gorn — especially considering the importance of the Gorn as the primary enemies in the show. It’s still an interesting watch, though if you saw the in-depth exploration of the Gorn design in the “Hegemony” episode of  The Ready Room with Wil Wheaton , much of that is repeated here.

It’s not the lengthiest presentation on this collection, but perhaps the best feature is “ Singing in Space” (22:14) , focused of course on “Subspace Rhapsody.”

Now, if you liked the musical episode, this will be a blast, especially for looking at how the actors, composer Tom Polce, and lyricist Kay Hanley worked together to deliver the episode. A lot of people enjoyed working on this, from the producers down to the songwriters (some of the actors seem less enthusiastic, but I’ll leave that to your judgment). The focus within the interviews on Polce and Hanley is well deserved, especially because they were the backbone of this episode.

ready room star trek strange new worlds

The Season 2 Deleted Scenes (16:04) were a bit flatter than the snippets from Season 1. There was a little more screen time for Admirals April and Tafune from “The Broken Circle,” but while may have been enjoyable to the nerds like me, it was extraneous exposition that didn’t add much in the end.

The comedy scene of La’an and Kirk wearing the same outfit (“Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”) was cute, and human-Spock discovering the pitfalls of mixing chewing gum with other foods (“Charades”) was amusing, but neither were big losses.

Nearly five minutes from “Lost in Translation” are featured here, mainly concerning the Number One-Pelia tension subpot — which makes sense, considering how short this story was in the final cut. They’re decent scenes, especially when Pelia and Una discuss why Hemmer was so important to the crew, and how Pelia reminds them all of his loss. Again, Carol Kane shines as the chief engineer and I think the scene in the shuttle should have stayed in — I prefer it to the final version!

There is another sequence from the same episode, which seems to be an alternate cut of the Kirk brothers (and Uhura) discussing the nebula aliens; this highlights the good chemistry that Dan Jeannotte and Paul Wesley share, constantly throwing barbs at each other.

ready room star trek strange new worlds

The trim from “Those Old Scientists” – another alternate cut, this time of the Orions stealing the time portal – is pretty funny, but on the other hand, the edits from “Under the Cloak of War” are pretty odd. Erased were some pretty good character moments, like a first proper introduction between M’Benga and Chapel (from the J’Gal flashbacks) — but cutting out Captain Pike’s apology for dragging M’Benga into attending the tense dinner seems like a ridiculous decision. The sound work on all the scenes implies that they were all cut very late on the day; an odd choice considering how short the runtime of the final episode was.

What’s cut from “Subspace Rhapsody” is also fairly acceptable, even though I do enjoy watching Wesley and Romjin bounce off each other. The alternate cut of the Klingons in the final song (where they perform a little bit of Les Mis -style Klingon opera instead of K-Pop) is nice, but nothing to write home about.

ready room star trek strange new worlds

Overall? A decent set of special features, in my view. The lack of a gag reel and commentary tracks seem telling, mind you; a casualty of the actor’s strike, perhaps? I certainly hope not.

Hopefully both will see a return when Season 3 comes to disc sometime in 2025.

Everything We Know About Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3

The third season of the newest Star Trek series is back in production after strike delays. What can viewers expect to see?

Star Trek has been one of the most iconic sci-fi properties in entertainment for more than half a century. Since 1966, viewers have boldly gone where no viewers have before on board the Enterprise and other starships. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the eleventh and most recent full-length series in the franchise. It tells the story of Captain Christopher Pike, the captain of the Enterprise and immediate predecessor to James T. Kirk, in the decade preceding The Original Series .

Its critical and fan success led to a third season's order in March 2023, months before the second launched. Filming was scheduled to begin in mid-2023 before the dual WGA and SAG strikes pushed production back. Now, with things up and running again, what do we know? How will the new season continue the story of the first two? Which main cast members will return, who might not, and will any new faces join them? What else do we know about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Returning Cast Members

Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Trekkies should rest assured that every main cast member from the second season is set to return in Season 3. Anson Mount is back in the lead role as Pike, a role he originated in Star Trek: Discovery . Ethan Peck portrays the younger version of Spock , memorably brought to life by Leonard Nimoy in The Original Series . Spock originally worked under Pike before later joining Kirk. A young Christine Chapel is played by Jess Bush, succeeding Majel Barrett – wife of creator Gene Roddenberry – from the original.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds cast interview

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Best Moments

Younger versions of Uhura, played by Celia Rose Gooding, and Number One, played by Rebecca Romijn, will return. The late Nichelle Nichols played Uhura, while Majel Barrett also played Number One in The Original Series ' unaired pilot. Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas, and Babs Olusanmokun as Joseph M'Benga round out the rest of the returning main cast.

Paul Wesley will return again as the younger James T. Kirk, alongside another famous face from the original run. Scotty, now played by Martin Quinn, was beamed up in the Season 2 finale and will return to the show in the upcoming batch of episodes. Currently, there's no additional information on any new characters or other returnees from the first two outings. We should expect more casting news to come out as production continues.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season 3 Plot Details

While we have no concrete information about what we might see plot-wise, it's safe to assume that Season 3 will pick up right where the second season finale left off. Season 2 ended with the arrival of the Gorn after their appearance was teased all season. The Enterprise crew attempts to rescue colony survivors under the Gorn's siege, but it appears that the Gorn beat them to it. Complicating matters was the fact that the Gorn attacked a colony where both Marie Batel and Christine Chapel were visiting. No one can for sure say what happens to the colonists by the end of the episode, though it's safe to say we haven't seen the last of them.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season Two Cast

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Biggest Surprises and Twists in Season 2

Earlier in the season, Spock was accidentally turned into a human for a brief time, which led to him and Chapel accepting their feelings for one another. Characters dealt with their own personal and interconnected traumas, and La'an and Kirk even formed a romance in an alternate universe, modern-day Toronto. The finale also introduced us to young junior officer Montgomery Scott. In an interview with Variety , executive producer and writer Henry Alonso Myers and showrunner Akiva Goldsman explained the decision to feature another original series veteran,

"It just sort of came up as we were talking about the story. Initially, it had been someone else completely. And then Akiva and I were talking, and I was like, “Well, what about Scotty?” And then we both fell in love with the idea."

A Celebration of the Franchise

Myers and Goldsman also teased that we could see more characters from The Original Series return if the show's run continues for a few more years. Season 2 took risks; who would have thought Star Trek would put on a full musical episode ? The animated Star Trek: Lower Decks also received the live-action treatment in a praised crossover episode. This show is so much more than just a prequel to The Original Series . It's a celebration of all things Star Trek and how the franchise still has life after 55+ years. We should expect those same innovative storytelling techniques in Season 3.

However, there will be a longer than usual wait for Season 3. Production is slated to run from December 2023 through July 2024, delayed by the Hollywood strikes . However, if it follows the pattern of the first two seasons, it should be well worth the wait. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is available to stream on Paramount+.
