Top things to do before your cruise from the uk, experience the wonder of stonehenge.

One of the most iconic excursions to go on before Southampton cruises is a visit to Stonehenge. Famous for its Neolithic engineering as well as its mysteriousness, Stonehenge features a stone circle that was built from massive stones weighing as much as 25 tons that had to have been transported incredibly long distances using only the simple tools they had available at the time. It’s an incredible experience to walk around the circle and imagine a former civilization constructing it thousands of years ago.

Shop on Oxford Street

Spanning 1.5 miles, London’s Oxford Street is a shopper’s paradise. Top Sights & Attractions Near Southampton

Windsor castle.

Dating back to the 11th century, Windsor Castle has served as the royal home for over 39 monarchs over the span of 900 years, making it the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. Visit the State Apartments, where Queen Elizabeth used to host her official visits. See Queen Mary’s doll house from the 1920s, which was built to include electricity and running water. Stop in St. George’s Chapel, the site where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married in 2018.

Visit Runnymede, the place where the Magna Carta was signed in 1215. The picturesque meadows became the unofficial birthplace of democracy over 800 years ago, when King James signed the Magna Carta into existence. There are several memorials to explore in the site, including the Magna Carta Memorial, the JFK Memorial (a plaque that commemorates the former U.S. president’s legacy after his assassination), and the Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial, which includes the names of the more than 20,000 members of the Allied Air Forces who died during World War II.

River Thames

Take a river cruise down its gentle waters and admire the cityscape in the distance. Stroll along the Thames and stop for lunch or dinner at a riverside restaurant. When can I cruise from Southampton

Our ships sail from Southampton between April and October. No matter which month you choose to travel, we’ll transport you to Europe’s most desirable destinations. If you’re planning on bringing the whole family along, you can’t beat our summer sailings around the stunning Mediterranean.

What food should I try in Southampton?

For a quintessential English dining experience, look for menus with the following items: Bakewell pudding, a dessert with a pastry base that has an almond filling and is topped with jam and icing; spotted dick, another dessert pudding featuring currants and raisins; Cornish pastry, a savory pastry filled with meat and vegetables; Lancashire hotpot, a stew made with lamb and potatoes; fish and chips, with battered, deep-fried fish served alongside fries; and curry, since England is known for its Indian and Bangladeshi food, particularly chicken tikka masala.

When you’re in England, don’t miss the chance to savor the country’s iconic traditional breakfast of bacon, sausage, fried eggs, baked beans, mushrooms, black pudding, a roasted tomato, and toast.

Afternoon tea is also a popular way to get a taste of England. A traditional English tea usually has scones with jam, butter, clotted cream, and tea. A couple of the best places to get tea during your Southampton cruise port of call are at Grand Café, which offers two different types of afternoon tea, and Elsie’s Tea Room, which has a vintage feel.

Cruises from Southampton (2023)

Cruises from Southampton in (2023)

MSC Cruises continues its all-year-round presence in the Port of Southampton with its most popular ship in the fleet, and later in the year, a brand new ship will visit for the winter!

As the end of the winter season approaches, MSC Virtuosa will sail her final 7-night roundtrip voyage to Hamburg and then conduct a series of mini-cruises – highlighting the fun you can have on the ship in just three nights!

Finally, at the end of the month, she moves into her first Spring/Summer longer voyage of the season by setting sail to the beautiful Canary Islands on a 12-night voyage which includes a stop in the stunning city of Lisbon, Portugal!

Cruises from Southampton in April 2023

As Spring turns towards Summer, MSC Virtuosa will conduct two 7-night Norwegian Fjords voyages visiting wonderful ports such as Olden (home of the Briksdal Glacier) and Flaam, a beautiful little Norwegian port nestled deep in a fjord – with its own microbrewery!

May is wrapped up with two short mini cruises (3 and 5 nights) with calls to Rotterdam, Cork and Portland between the two of them!

June marks a special one-off voyage for MSC Virtuosa , where she will sail on a fortnight cruise to Iceland and Norway – with a lovely overnight stop in Reykjavik for passengers, before crossing the Norwegian Sea and visiting the popular port of Alesund, followed by Maloy and Flaam before heading back to Southampton.

The second half of June sees MSC Virtuosa heading South, across the English Channel and down towards the Bay of Biscay in two back-to-back voyages to Spain & France – calling at ports such as La Rochelle, Bilbao and La Coruna – a great taster of some warmer weather and European ports.

That wraps up half of the cruises from Southampton in 2023 for MSC – there is still plenty to come, though!

As we move into the school holidays and the peak season for MSC Virtuosa , she will conduct three back-to-back 14-night Mediterranean voyages! The first of which sets sail on the 1st July and heads from Southampton to Toulon (France) – the port has a natural deepwater harbour and is also the home of local fishermen (and restaurants) and also wine-making – make sure you sample the local delicacies whilst there! (sounds like the perfect combination!)

Great Spanish ports on each of the three voyages – make sure you spend some time wandering around Cadiz – you can literally walk into the old city from the ship, and the bustling market and cafes are an ideal way to enjoy some time ashore!

August 2023

This month sees the return of MSC Virtuosa back to the Canary Islands on a 12-night voyage, followed by a 2-night mini-cruise to Guernsey (which will certainly be a party event if you are going!) and then a 7-night voyage to Norway – whilst you may have missed the Midnight Sun by this point in the year – it will still be very light with daylight stretching from 4am until around 11pm each day!

September 2023

In September, MSC Virtuosa will first head back to Norway for the last time in 2023 on a 7-night voyage before returning and heading to the Canary Islands – this time on an extended 14-night voyage which also calls in at Casablanca (Morroco) and Cadiz (Spain) en-route to the Canary Islands and Madeira.

On her return, she will conduct a short 3-night mini-cruise to Rotterdam and back and then a further 4-night mini-cruise to Cork and Portland, before setting sail on a rare 15-night extended Mediterranean voyage on the 30th September! She will call at several Spanish ports during her trip including the ever popular Barcelona!

October 2023

As we head into the final month of MSC Virtuosa’s Southampton 2023 season, she will head to France & Spain once more on a 7-night voyage before conducting a slightly longer than usual mini-cruise (5 nights) which will call at Rotterdam, Cork and Portland – before arriving back into Southampton the 27th October 2023.

Meanwhile, the new sister ship, MSC Euribia , will arrive in Southampton for the first time on the 13th of October – she will officially kick off her Winter 2023/24 season with back-to-back 7-night voyages to Hamburg and other ports each week until April 2024! (The countdown to the Christmas Markets is on!)

27th October 2023 is a special day – mark that date! It will be the first time two MSC Meraviglia-plus class ships have been in Southampton on the same day and the first time that MSC Virtuosa will meet her younger sibling, MSC Euribia .

MSC Euribia will leave on a 7-night voyage to Northern Europe. Meanwhile, some lucky passengers will be boarding MSC Virtuosa for an incredible 27-night journey that will take the ship from Southampton, the Mediterranean Sea and along through the Suez Canal before eventually reaching Dubai where she will spend her Winter 2023/24 season (if you’ve not checked out the itineraries there – you really should!)

MSC Euribia will then continue her weekly 7-night Northern Europe itinerary – a perfect mix of sea days and Northern European ports to pass the winter by!

November 2023

MSC Euribia will continue to call in Southampton weekly during November (four times) as she continues her multi-port and multi-embarkation season. As we head towards the end of the month, some ports will start their Christmas Market season too.

Popular ports such as Hamburg will start their Christmas Markets earlier than others – look out for a full Christmas Market Guide from us soon!

These voyages will be an excellent choice for those looking at getting away for a quick Winter break – cruising before Christmas and outside of the school holidays offers excellent value for money – look out for offers from us nearer the time!

December 2023

Whilst MSC Euribia is again continuing her weekly 7-night voyages to Northern Europe (five times in December she will depart Southampton) – they will be anything but routine!

Expect to see the ship transformed into a Christmas Winter Wonderland – complete with outdoor mini-Christmas market, Gluhwein, hot waffles and more!

Enjoy the Christmas festivities at each port you call into and countdown to the 22nd December where MSC Euribia will perform her maiden Christmas Cruise, followed by the 29th December where you can see in 2024 with MSC Euribia on her first NYE Cruise too!

We hope you enjoyed this roundup of what MSC Cruises offers from Southampton in 2023!

Cruises From Southampton, England

An aerial view of Southampton cruise port, England

Southampton, 'Cruise Capital' of the UK The Port of Southampton became famous in the twentieth century as the United Kingdom's foremost port of departure for the great cruise lines. In terms of number of passengers, the most popular route used to be the transatlantic crossing to the USA. But in 1939 the first Pan Am passenger flight across the Atlantic signaled the finish of this golden time of ocean travel. In the following years Southampton came to prominence as a major Cruise port. Today the number of cruises from Southampton on offer each year is well over five hundred. The port is split between the Eastern Docks and Western Docks. The Western Docks are the location for the Mayflower, Horizon and City Cruise Terminals, the Eastern Docks the location for the QE2 and Ocean Cruise Terminals. The Eastern Docks witnessed perhaps Southampton's most famous event. In 1912 the Titanic left from White Star Dock (near today's Ocean dock) on its first voyage. When the ship went down, of the 1500 lives lost, 500 were crew who lived in Southampton and the impact on the city was enormous.

Southampton Cruise Ship Terminals Eastern Docks Queen Elizabeth II Terminal - Berth 38/9 The QE2 terminal was opened in 1966 by the Queen. The dock is home to Cunard's cruise liners, Queen Mary II, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. Facilities include a short stay car park, a bar, a taxi rank and a cafe. The viewing area is closed to visitors. Ocean Cruise Terminal Berth 46 The first Ocean Cruise Terminal was a designer Art-Deco construction. Sadly this was demolished in 1983 The modern building, finished in 2009, is a total change from its namesake, being a huge modern design with simple curved lines. Facilities available include a short stay car park, a taxi rank, a bar and cafe. Western Docks City Cruise Terminal Berth 101 This Terminal has completed a 7 year refurbishment to double its capacity. It can now manage the largest 'Freedom Class' ships of RCI. Facilities include a short stay car park, a taxi rank, a bar and cafe. The nearby Mayflower Park is a good point to watch cruise ship departures. Horizon Cruise Terminal Berth 102 Horizon cruise terminal was opened in 2021, the result of a strategic partnership between the port, NCL, and MSC Cruises. The two level state-of-the-art terminal offers a full range of facilities, including check-in, baggage handling and security. Mayflower Cruise Terminal Berth 106 The Mayflower Cruise Terminal, opened in 1960, has long been associated with the P&O fleet of ships. Facilities are a taxi rank, a bar and cafe, and viewing gallery.

Cruises From Southampton The choice of cruises from Southampton is possibly the best of any departure port in the world. Itineraries from Southampton include voyages north to the magnificent Norwegian Fjords, north-east to the Baltic Sea and majestic St Petersburg, south to the beautiful Canary Islands, or south then east to the Western Mediterranean or Eastern Mediterranean. Another popular alternative is a voyage around Britain. If you're an ocean lover and enjoy sea days, another option is the classic westbound transatlantic voyage to New York. Finally how about the cruise of a lifetime - Round The World. Cruises from Southampton are easily accessible, thanks to its good rail and road links.

Travelling to Southampton's Port By Road The majority of passengers booked on cruises from Southampton travel by road from the South-East of England. The M27 motorway, which joins places bordering the southern coast of England, runs just to the north of Southampton. The M3 motorway connects the city to London and also, by linking to the A34 road at Winchester with the Midlands and North. The M271 motorway, off the M27, joins it with the Docks and city centre. By Train Direct train services connect Southampton with London, and many places in England. There is a frequent train between London Waterloo and Southampton Central, the journey time is around 80 minutes. Rail routes run east towards Portsmouth, north towards the Midlands and beyond, and westwards to cities like Bournemouth and Bristol. From the train station you can either catch a taxi, or take the free CityLink bus service between the rail station and Town Quay every quarter-hour. By Airplane From London Heathrow There is a National Express bus to and from Heathrow Terminal every one-and-a-half to two hours. The journey time is about 2 hours. From London Gatwick Airport Take the train to Southampton Central station. Every hour, with a journey time of just under 2 hours. From Southampton Airport It's easiest to catch a cab for the docks.
