Noel Gallagher was born on 29th May 1967. A Manchester lad that has experienced the highs and low of a rock career. Since his departure from Oasis back in 2009, Noel has gone on to create a new wave of sound called 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.'

Who doesn't know who Oasis are. They are, or were, said to be the modern day version of The Beatles. They stormed the charts for years, played famous concerts, beat up paparazzi and became legends. But in August 2009, following a mishap with brother Liam prior to a gig in Paris, Gallagher announced his departure from Oasis. However this was a common scene in the Oasis lifestyle, leave the band one minute then next minute set off on a month long sold tour across the globe. But this time the older brother really stuck to his word. Noel was the spine of Oasis, the songwriter, the leader, who was now alone in a recording studio who could do what he pleased with no drama.

Noel went on to produce an exceptional piece of work. Forget 'What's the Story, Morning Glory,' or 'Definitely Maybe,' this was definitely maybe the best piece of music from Noel in a long time. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds debut came out in 2011, two years after the famous split, and it seems that it could have been the best move in Noel's musical career.

The High Flying Birds evokes the ethereal sound of Pink Floyd and it must be said that if Oasis released this album you wouldn't know difference in their sound, just a progression in song writing. But tunes like 'If I Had A Gun,' and the debut single 'The Death of You and Me,' do offer more tuneful melodies in Noel's catalogue of sounds. It was a new exciting wave for Noel and he would go on to prove himself amongst the best English songwriters of all time with his hit tune 'AKA What a Life.' It was used in an England advert for the build up of the World Cup. It was uplifting, motivational and a classic Noel song.

Now with news of a follow up to the indisputable debut, The High Flyers are off on the road again. And members Mike Rowe, drummer Jeremy Stacey, The Zutons bassist Russell Pritchard, guitarist Tim Smith and of course Noel will yet again banish all rumours of Oasis reforming.

Live reviews

The Hydro, Glasgow.

In 1993, when Oasis played King Tut’s in front of a handful of people, nobody could have predicted what was lying ahead. Yet, that night, it only took a hint of intuition and a couple of Jack Daniels for Alan McGee to sign one of the biggest bands of the last 30 years.

More than twenty years after, the special connection between Glasgow and the Manchester legend is still intact and it is fair to say that the expectations were high for the fourth concert (sold out in a couple of minutes) of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ “Chasing Yesterday Tour.”

In celebration, a signing was even organized at HMV prior to the concert, as a special treat for Scottish fans.

It takes time for the impressive SSE Hydro to fill, and the audience is still quite sparsed when supporting band Black Rivers gets on stage. The performance is quite messy, blame it on a barely audible voice and bad sound settings marked by frequent cuts. If the audience gives a polite welcome to the English band, it is not difficult to see it is far from enough to fill the wait.

At 9pm sharp, Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds finally take on stage to the sound of “Shoot A Hole Into The Sun” – a B-side from their debut album – while the back screen displays a wall of bricks soberly announcing the band. Hysteria takes over excitement, and as the wall cracks, the real deal begins.

In a recent interview given to the NME, Noel Gallagher promised his setlists would be a perfect mix of his new tracks and Oasis’ classics (rearranged to his new sound) to please an audience that often comes out of a certain nostalgia (as proved by the number of Oasis t-shirts in the venue.) And the promise is kept, with five songs from the Definitely Maybe/(What’s The Story?) Morning Glory era.

The set starts with “Do The Damage”, B-side from “Chasing Yesterday’s” first single “In The Heat of the Moment”, a perfect choice to energetically answer to the explosive atmosphere. The band carries on with two tracks from their first album (‘Stranding On The Wrong Beach’ and ‘Everybody’s On The Run’) accompanied by a choir. First Oasis’ song played is an acoustic rendition of‘ Fade Away’, and we must wait for the fifth song of the set to actually hear tracks from the new album (‘In The Heat of the Moment’, ‘Lock All the Doors’), with a special mention to the brass section that gives an epic dimension to the excellent ‘Riverman’ and ‘The Mexican’.

We could say Noel was rather surprised and quite delighted with the audience singing along songs that were only released five days before. After admitting he “did feel a bit like Father Christmas” during the signing, the Chief moved on with some of the public favourites: ‘If I Had A Gun’, ‘Aka… Broken Arrow’ and ‘The Death of You and Me’.

But it’s definitely with ‘Champagne Supernova’, ‘Digsy’s Dinner’ (dedicated to Kevin Bridges), ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ and ‘The Masterplan’ that the night reaches its apex. There truly is no word to describe the feeling coming from more than 10 000 people singing those classics altogether.

An amazing atmosphere that Noel described in his tour diary ‘Tales From the Middle of Nowhere’: “TRULY world class…is that fucking crowd. Holy shit-balls… I’ve seen and done some shit in my time but I’m damned if I can remember anything to match that Saturday night!?! One of THE BEST nights I’ve ever done, ANYWHERE.”

The feeling is mutual. Next Scottish round: T In The Park.

"Merry fucking Christmas" spat Noel as he flew in to Half The World Away, closing out his Royal Albert Hall gig with his High Flying Birds. A great moment in an excellent double set from the famously grumpy Mancunian.

Despite his best efforts to appear otherwise, he clearly enjoys playing the Albert Hall - and who else would have the cajones to be their own support act? The Oasis semi-acoustic "Support-Act Noel" was beautifully delivered with stand out tracks Slide Away and Wonderwall particularly well rendered unplugged, as Noel plucked away alongside, amongst others, former Oasis band-mate Gem Archer.

The main Birds set delivered all the biggies, opening with Everybody's On The Run, show casing new crowd favourite The Riverman and even a bit of Oasis-related banter, with the intro "this one's for all the Oasis fans" before launching into You Know We Can't Go Back. The playlist was also heavily peppered with more Oasis classics such as Fade Away, Champagne Supernova, Talk Tonight and Whatever, closing out with the song that used to be more associated with a fat scruffy scouser and his TV-loving family than an old duffer stuck on the moon.

The encore was standard Gallagher affair - he knows what the people want and he dishes it out in spades - The Masterplan, AKA and finally, obviously, what else, Don't Look Back In Anger. Cue crowd singing (or shouting where singing was not an option) and generally going absolutely nuts.

Great show, great venue, great times.

After the break-up of Oasis, Noel Gallagher could’ve gone off and made a latin jazz album or tried his hand at some other kind of self-indulgent project, as he had nothing to prove; nothing could have tarnished his status as one of the UK’s best songwriters. Instead, he released a solo album under the moniker of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, which featured some of his catchiest, most affective compositions since the early Oasis days.

Gallagher and his High Flying Birds toured that self-titled album extensively upon its release, initially in smaller theatre type venues and later at the arenas and festival main stages he was more accustomed to. I had the pleasure of seeing him at FIB Benicassim, Spain, in 2012, where he performed just before The Stone Roses. Songs like ‘AKA…What A Life’ and ‘If I Had A Gun…’ featured hooks that are up there with his Oasis gems, and he even granted the baying audience a few classic Oasis songs, including a celebratory rendition of ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, which brought the crowd together in the biggest sing-a-along of the festival. Noel was in good spirits, jovial as ever, and he truly seemed to be enjoying himself. Who needs Oasis, ey?

One of the most impactful breakups of the past decade is without a doubt the brotherly riff that caused the demise of Oasis. A band that soundtracked a generation, the pair went in separate ways and whereas Liam's Beady Eye crashed and burned, Noel's High Flying Birds soared from out of the wreckage.

The frontman has not changed demeanour, he is as gruff and short tempered with the crowds as ever yet they scream in adoration anyway for new classics such as 'AKA What A Life' which they sing back in force to the bemusement of the frontman. The set is primarily composed of the new solo material yet there are a number of Oasis tracks dropped in for the benefit of the fans, 'Half The World Away' evokes the biggest singalong so far and Noel thanks them yet rules out any plans of getting the old band back together.

After playing the first 'High Flying Birds' album in its entirety, the audience knows the encore will be fully devoted to Oasis numbers. They were not wrong with 'Shout It Out Loud' followed by an anthemic 'Don't Look Back in Anger' supported by the thousand strong backing choir.

Noel Gallagher is a consummate professional and hilarious. He interacts with the crowd and puts on a solid show. The venue, however, I would not go back to. The House of Blues in Cleveland is small and cramped and if you want to be anywhere close, you have to spend at least $20 in their merch store or restaurant. I'm not knocking the business aspect of it, it's a good idea that works for them. The problem is they put those people in the dingy tunnel/corridor thing in between the kitchens. It smells and looks like an enclosed back alley. They don't number any one so its a free for all back there. It would've been better if it were more organized. But Noel was fantastic as per usual. Definitely seeing him again. Just not at the House of Blues.

I absolutely LOVED the performance. Perfect combination of his solo material with what were some really thought-out Oasis songs.

The finale was spectacular! The entire theater was on its feet singing along leaving you as a fan completely immersed in the moment, the song, the lights and the realization that you're witnessing a TRUE musician and his artistry!! I can't wait for him to be back in Los Angeles!! Love him! Loved that the venue was intimate and nostalgic--the perfect backdrop for Noel's melodic sounds when he wants to play something acoustic or when his also melodic riffs cut across the entire venue. Amazing!

Pretty good show:

The opener was Augustines. They had energy, but all they really did was make a lot of noise.

Noel on the other hand absolutely rocked. He performed a surprisingly high number of Oasis songs, so a lot of the Oasis fans in the crowd were pleased with that. But of course he also played High Flying Birds songs, which are also great. The show was a bit too loud though, but I guess that's nothing out of the ordinary.

He also interacted with the crowd quite a bit, in a friendly and sassy way.

I'd give him an 8/10.

I attended Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds last night at bellahouston park in Glasgow and I have to say it was the best night of my life! The atmosphere was outstanding and it was great to see people of all ages come together and communicate through music. The best part of the gig was when Don't Look Back In Anger was played and I was on my friends shoulders loving it, I would recommend going to see NGHFB as I will be going to see them again in September. What a life and what a night!!!

A fantastic performance from Noel and the band. The acoustic set was superb with the highlight being Slide Away and the evening just got better when the HFB came on for the main show a great mix of old and new songs made a fantastic evening with Noel being in great voice and it was great to see Gem for the acoustic set. A brilliant evening and to hear Champagne Supernova live again was fantastic. I had a great time and can't wait to see Noel and the boys again.

Awesome show! The chief was on fine form. The Live mix on stage was incredible aswell. Vocally Noel was on fine form. The additional musicians on stage really contemplated the songs. The only slight criticism for me was when he played “Go Let it Out” the songs seems to sound better in its original arrangement, as it appeared to be alerted. Other then that, great show and I would happily go see him play again.

Oasis announce surprise new release on 30th anniversary

Oasis band members Noel Gallagher and Liam Gallagher

Oasis are releasing a live recording of their first debut single, Supersonic, in celebration of its 30th anniversary – but sadly, still no word on an official reunion between the Gallagher brothers.

It has been announced that an early live recording from a gig at the Limelight, Belfast on September 4, 1994, has been released onto streaming platforms by Oasis today.

The recording was made just a week after the release of their album, Definitely Maybe , and just before taking to the stage, the band learned that their debut album had reached number one on the UK Official Album Chart.

The tune, which reached number 31 on the UK Singles Chart, was the band’s first release and famously was written and recorded in one day.

Noel Gallagher , 56, claims it only took him half an hour to write the song. He has said that another song was scrapped and they had to pull something together in the Liverpool recording studio where they recorded the album.

The release is an interesting move from the band which has been broken up for 15 years after a pretty public falling out between Noel and Liam Gallagher , 51.

Noel Gallagher and Liam Gallagher in 1999

The band split in 2009 when Noel wanted to go solo after persistently butting heads with his brother since their band formed in 1991.

Reports suggested that the brothers struggled to work with each other for the 18 years they were in Oasis together.

Several incidents took place while they worked together including Liam questioning the paternity of Noel’s daughter, leading to a punch-up, and another fallout which led Noel to hit Liam with a cricket bat.

In an interview with NME, Noel previously said of Liam: ‘I don’t know who the guy is who’s in these interviews, he seems really cool, because the guy I’ve been in a band with for the last 18 years is a f*****g k******d.’

Fifteen years on since their split, the brothers are still not on speaking terms and still take opportunities to publically lash out at each other.

Although it was announced this month that Oasis’ 30th anniversary tour will feature two Gallaghers , Noel will not be one of them, as the singer still refuses to work with his brother.

The newly released song has a raw and rockier song than the original recording and will certainly be a great listen for die-hard Oasis fans.

David Neely, who was the General Manager and booker at the venue where the song was recorded in 1994, reminisced on the night of the gig, recalling that the show is still ‘legendary’ in Belfast.

‘It was a sell out 500 people at the gig and tickets only £6.75! The Sunday of the week the debut album was released, the Limelight show was the right venue, for the right band at the right time,’ he said.

‘I remember around 6.30pm (in the dark days before mobile phones) that a call came into the office from Radio One, saying the band had just went to Number one in the album charts. It was a show that is now claimed by thousands that they were there – simply a show that is legendary in these parts.’

Supersonic (Live at The Limelight, Belfast) is now available on streaming platforms .

Having opened her 2023 festival account at Liverpool’s city-centre-wide Sound City and The Great Escape in Brighton, Rianne recently revealed she’ll be joining Paul Heaton at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.

The Black Keys ditch insecurities and enlist Beck, Noel Gallagher, hip-hop on new album

noel gallagher tour tickets

The Black Keys are renowned for their bracing garage rock, an elastic intertwining of blues and fuzzy guitars that has garnered them critical acclaim and a string of hits.

But on their 12 th studio album, “Ohio Players,” Akron natives Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney streamline the guttural thundering of “Lonely Boy” and “Lo/Hi” for a bit of a stylistic makeover.

The first single “Beautiful People (Stay High)” is unabashed pop-rock, while tracks written with Beck and Noel Gallagher follow similar melodic trails.

“Ohio Players,” out Friday, will be supported by the 31-date International Players Tour , which traverses the U.S. Sept. 17-Nov. 12. Tickets are on sale at 10 a.m. local time Friday via livenation.com.

In a recent joint conversation, Carney and Auerbach explained the influence of “record hangs” on their new songs, how hip-hop from Juicy J and Lil Noid blended into their sound and why Beck is “a superhero talent.”

More: Almost 60, Lenny Kravitz talks workouts, new music and why he's 'never felt more vibrant'

Question: The album title is obviously a connection with you guys being from Ohio, but is it also a nod to The Ohio Players?

Patrick Carney: It is, and maybe in a subtle way this album cover to their album covers.

Dan Auerbach: Naming albums is almost the most difficult part (of the process).

Carney: You have to frame your work so it’s creative and it makes sense, but it’s hard to explain how you arrive at a decision. We’ve been doing these record hangs, where we play 45s at pop-up parties and invite friends to join us, so one of the guest DJs threw on an Ohio Players 45 and it was like, ‘ahhh.’”

Songs like “Don’t Let Me Go” and “Beautiful People (Stay High)” are a bit more pop-leaning than your usual sound. What prompted that subtle shift?

Auerbach:  We’ve always been attracted to songs that are catchy but also raw. We think it’s really fun to try to write catchy songs. It’s a different type of challenge, With “Beautiful People,” that was a collaboration with (producer) Dan the Automater who we were fans of since high school. He had these loops and little ideas that he created with us in mind.

I hear a little bit of Rare Earth’s “I Just Want to Celebrate” in “Beautiful People.” Am I off base?

Carney: There’s a little bit of everything going on. These record hang nights are influential because we play songs that people mostly aren’t familiar with, like songs that were gold but never were heard either because of a terrible label or the artist died or something.

Auerbach: Like this record “Crumbia de sal” from Cumbia En Moog. It’s this Latin-heavy thing that is so dance-y and sounds so heavy and fresh and new and old. It’s those kind of magical records that we wanted to try to recreate.

What was it like working with Noel Gallagher (“On the Game,” “Only Love Matters”)? Have you been in each other’s orbits long?

Carney: We met Noel twice , in Glastonbury in 2014 and in New York around the same time. We talked to him and he was very cool and as you’d expect, funny. Part of the process of making this album was having fun. We made an effort to get out of Nashville and experience stuff together so we went to LA a lot. Dan wanted to work with Noel and we’re both fans, so we kept reaching out and hearing he doesn’t have time. My neighbor I golf with used to be Oasis’ booking agent for 20 years, so I asked him, “Maybe Noel will be interested?” That’s when Noel got back to us and gave us a window of four days in January (2023) in London.

You had Billy Gibbons on your last album (2002’s “Dropout Boogie”) and Beck, Juicy J and Lil Noid on this one. Do you feel you’re more open to collaborations now?

Auerbach: When we were younger we were far too insecure in our abilities. It’s taken this long to get to this point where we can seriously collaborate. Pat and I have been playing music for 20-plus years and we’re finally at the stage where it feels like the possibilities are limitless.

How did you come to incorporate hip-hop artists like Juicy J and Lil Noid into your songs?

Auerbach:  I was getting into underground Memphis rap from the 1990s and early 2000s, cassette tape stuff really only available on YouTube and like Three Six Mafia and Juicy J. There was the “Paranoid Funk” album Lil Noid made and even being a lifelong rap fan, I’d never heard this stuff. Every time we got in the car after a record hang we’d put on his “Riding in the Chevy” and be like man, it would be fun to work with Lil Noid. He came up to Nashville and he was really cool, a total character.

More: The Beach Boys like never before: Band's first official book is a trove of rare artifacts

And you’ve known Beck since you opened for him in 2003?

Carney: I met him in the ’90s because my uncle was a musician who played with Tom Waits and knew Beck. So he was the first rock star I ever met when I was 16 and obsessed with “Odelay.” We met again in 2003 in New York. We were playing a show with Sleater-Kinney and after the show, the ladies (in Sleater-Kinney) said, “Do you want to go to the ‘Saturday Night Live’ after party?” We said, how are you going to get us in? And they said, “Our friend Beck just performed (on the show).” So we went to some bar and I flipped him a copy of (second album) “Thickfreakness” and that kind of stuff usually results with the CD in the trash can. But he listened to us and invited us to open on his 2003 Sea Change Tour.

So when Beck came in (for this record), we were there for it. If he had suggestions, we were game. He hopped right in and we were able to see why Beck is who Beck is. He’s a superhero talent, a lyrical and melody machine. A song like “This is Nowhere” (co-written with Beck), I don’t think Dan or Beck or I could accomplish on our own. That’s the X factor.

'Seamless': Black Keys talk collaborating with Noel Gallagher

Share with :.

The Black Keys taught Noel Gallagher a new way of working.

The former Oasis rocker features on the duo's new LP 'Ohio Players' and though the studio process with him was "seamless", the pair were amazed to find it was all new to the 'Live Forever' hitmaker because he doesn't usually write with other people.

Drummer Patrick Carney told the Daily Star Sunday's Wired column: "We got on really well creatively. It was seamless working with him.

"Noel said, 'I've never written with other people in the studio' so we popped his cherry in that regard.

"That was surprising to me that he hadn't done that - it's pretty much how we make most of our music.

"Noel would usually write the chords and the lyrics himself then bring it to the band and do it like that. I always make it up on the spot."

And while their collaboration 'On the Game' features on the album, there may be more to come from Noel and the Black Keys.

Patrick said: "We got a song on the first day and we got a song on the second day and we got a song on the third day - a whole take.

"On the fourth day, we went into the studio and just kind of [messed] around - we didn't want to push it.

"We already had so much great [stuff], if we ended with a bad song it was just going to ruin the experience."

The 'Gold on the Ceiling' hitmakers had been warned they were unlikely to get Noel on board but it took him just a few days to agree.

Patrick said: "We kept hearing, 'Noel doesn't collaborate like that'.

"But my neighbour was the Oasis booking agent for about 15 years. I was going golfing with him one day and I said, 'We're trying to reach Noel'. He said, 'I could drop him a line.'

"A couple of days later, we heard back from Noel that he'd give it a try if we came to London."

“Noel Gallagher gave me one of Peter Green’s Gibson Les Pauls. Johnny Marr had given Noel a guitar, and maybe he felt it was customary that he do the same”: Bill Ryder-Jones on his ascent to UK indie rock royalty

The former Coral guitarist has gone on to release captivating solo material. He shares stories of recording with Noel Gallagher, tracking solos with Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner, and why he isn’t as good a player as he used to be – but he’s OK with that

Bill Ryder-Jones

As a teenager, Bill Ryder-Jones was the lead guitarist of The Coral, whose single Dreaming of You was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2002. He didn’t just play guitar on the track – which came off the band’s self-titled debut record – but also played trumpet and nabbed a co-producer credit.

Ryder-Jones stuck with The Coral until 2008 before going solo, taking up session work with Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner and launching Yawn Studio, where he produces artists from his hometown village of West Kirby.

With his trusty ’63 Gibson ES-335 and one of Peter Green’s guitars in hand (more on that later), Ryder-Jones is as busy as ever on the recorded music front, with his latest record lechyd Da having landed via Domino Records on January 12.

At 40, and with a host of credits under his belt, his viewpoint on the guitar has changed – as has his skillset. “I think I might struggle to play some of my parts from when I was 16,” he laughs. “But I think I write better guitar parts now, as I’m looking for very sweet-sounding and melodic things.”

How did your latest record, lechyd Da, get started?

“It started after I met this girl, and we’d send each other songs that meant something, as you do. I’d send her one, she’d send me one, and we made a collaborative playlist on a streaming site with all sorts of songs that I loved.

“The songs she’d send back all had something in common – I don’t know what but there was something in them, and it became an idea to make a record that had the same feeling as the songs we’d been showing each other. It was quite romantic.”

Where are you pulling inspiration from?

“In terms of guitar playing, I’m not sure I think of myself as that much of a guitarist anymore. It used to be my whole life where I’d be sitting around at home and playing guitar. But now I use it as an instrument like I’d use any other.

“I still love [The Verve’s] Nick McCabe’s playing. His choice of notes and textures were great – he was a really wild player. And in terms of songwriting, I’m still sort of in love with the same kinds of things I loved when I was 16: Paul Simon, Brian Wilson, and The Beatles, of course.”

What did your process look like in terms of dialing in the sounds to achieve the overall vibe on lechyd Da ?

“My approach is quite simple. I love my nylon-stringed guitar, which is Spanish. It really works well for my songs, and I have a mic technique that works well. As for the electrics, I’ve got a 1963 Gibson ES-335, so it’s either that or – and this is a bit of a brag – one of Peter Green’s Gibson Les Pauls , which does dual sounds well.

Noel Gallagher purposefully rubbed off Peter Green’s signature to make a point to the guy in the guitar shop

“I have a ’57 Fender Custom Deluxe amp that works nicely, and a Fender Bassman. It was mainly those two, so there’s no real trickery. When I’m playing, if it’s a lead part, it’s got to serve a purpose. I’m not quite as fluent as I probably was in my 20s, so it’s mainly about finding the right melody.”

So how did you end up with the Peter Green Les Paul ?

“Oh, well! It’s another name drop – it was given to me by Noel Gallagher in 2006 when I was 23. The Coral were making a record in Noel’s studio, Wheeler End Studios, and I’d used this Les Paul for most of it, not knowing it was Peter Green’s.

“I think Johnny Marr had given Noel a guitar, and maybe he felt it was customary that he do the same. I had no money at the time – my only good guitar was my 335. Of course, I had guitars that I loved, but in terms of guitars that were worth more than £500, the 335 was all I had.”

Did Noel tell you how he’d ended up with it?

“When he gave it to me he told me a story about how a guitar shop owner didn’t want to sell it to him. The guy didn’t know who Noel was – he’d somehow not heard of Oasis. But Noel saw the guitar on the top shelf behind the counter and said, ‘Can I have a go with that Les Paul?’

“And the guy behind the counter goes, ‘Erm, you do know that was Peter Green’s, and it’s signed by Peter Green, right?’ He reluctantly got it down. Noel spat on his T-shirt and rubbed off the signature! And he said, ‘Doesn’t matter now – I’ll take it anyway.’

“That’s a very Noel thing to do and a very funny story. I woulda loved for it to have Peter Green’s signature. I probably would have sold it by now, and had a house! But I’m so very thankful I didn’t do that. It’s a cracking guitar. It’s got the out-of-phase pickup, and it’s so bloody heavy, so I can hardly play it.”

Bill Ryder-Jones' Gibson Les Paul

Just so we’re clear, was that a fake signature that Noel rubbed off, or did he rub off Peter Green’s actual signature?

“Oh, he purposefully rubbed off Peter Green’s signature to make a point to the guy in the guitar shop. Noel thought he was being a bit rude, you know?”

Noel is a great example of someone who plays guitar but probably identifies as a songwriter first. Do you see that in what you’re doing now?

“I couldn’t make any comparisons between Noel Gallagher and myself. He’s fucking Noel Gallagher to start! Obviously I remember how Oasis changed my life, being a Northern lad in the ‘90s, but I consider myself a musician first. I like making music, and it happens that I sing on it, too, because that’s what you do, right?

I don’t think I’m as good as I was… Back then it was my whole life; my job was being in a band

“I’ve met Noel on several occasions, and – especially in my early days – I had the greatest respect for Noel’s playing. His style is very signature. You don’t have to be overly dexterous as it’s a lot of blues pentatonic.

“That was a great way to have a great introduction to playing rock ‘n’ roll when you didn’t have any sort of musical education. His most powerful songs are largely major chord-based, and there’s not a lot of madness going on in the chord structures, which I like because I like to keep things simple.”

You made some outstanding music with The Coral. How have you changed as a guitarist since then?

“I don’t think I’m as good as I was. I’m better in some ways, but I’m also not as good as I was. Back then it was my whole life; my job was being in a band.

“I was actually out last night with [Coral rhythm guitarist] James Skelly for a few drinks. He’s always been very sweet about my playing and my importance in the early days. But I don’t know – I was always trying to impress him!

“That’s really what I was striving for back in those days. These days, I can still make some decent sounds, but I don’t always get a chance to do some of that stuff because the music doesn’t call for a lot of big guitars. I’m much more interested in sort of subtle lines and earworms.

“One thing that’s remained constant for me is the playing of a guy like John Head from Shack. He’s always tasteful and never does too much. I’m much less impressed by guitar playing than I was, and I’m more into melodies now.”

You also contributed some guitars to the Arctic Monkeys‘ Fireside from AM . What was that like?

“The AM thing was done remotely, but I knew Alex Turner because I’d already worked with him on his solo EP Submarine . I love Alex’s writing, and I did learn a lot because his songwriting craft is up there with the very best.

“He’s got an amazing mind for creating a song and knows where to take a song. And he’s got a very singular, individual approach to writing lyrics. He’s not a fucking bad guitarist either! He can construct amazing melodies; he’s one of the greatest writers alive.

I used to stay in one position and let the chords move around me. I’m now more interested in jumping through the scales of corresponding chords

“But AM was done while the Arctic Monkeys were in LA and I was in London. I had done a few lines, and he said, ‘I want you to do something that Bill would do.’ I felt like I should do something the Arctic Monkeys would do, but Alex said, ‘We’ve asked you because we want you to do Bill.’

“After that, things were much easier. I put a reverb pedal on and just did what came naturally. The whole experience was wild – an honor, really. But he hasn’t asked me again; they haven’t asked me back, so I couldn’t have been that good!”

Alex is always open-minded about what he’s doing; maybe he’ll ask again in the future.

“And maybe I’ll say yes again in the future! I could do with the fucking money, I’ll tell you that much!”

Which of the songs on lechyd Da is most representative of the player you are today?

“I think there’s some really nice guitar on How Beautiful I Am . It’s got that sort of thing I was talking about earlier, and it’s got one of the few guitar solos on the record. It might be the only solo, so I’d have to pick that.

“Playing over minor chords like that can be a challenge because when you use blues pentatonics, it takes things somewhere else. It makes things a bit more melodic, whereas I used to largely stay in one position and let the chords move around me.

“I’m now more interested in sort of jumping through the scales of corresponding chords; I think that makes things more conversational. But in terms of writing, all these songs are incredibly meaningful. That’s why they’re on the record.”

What’s next for you?

“I’m just been on tour and I’ve got some production stuff on tap, too. I’ve got some good artists booked into my studio. Then I’m going to write another EP for the end of the year, I believe, to ‘keep the campaign alive’, which was the phrase used to sell me on the idea!

“But now, I’m gonna go for a pint! I’ve been at it all day and it’s meant to be my day off, so I’m going down the pub to relax a bit. Other than that, I try not to think too far ahead.”

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

“C’mon”: Liam Gallagher shares footage of son Gene’s band Villanelle, after denying claims of nepotism ahead of support tour

Gallagher said Gene’s “hero” was Kurt Cobain, and revealed other son Lennon’s band Automotion were also asked to support but “politely refused”

Liam Gallagher new album Gene Gallagher

Liam Gallagher has shared footage of his son’s band, after denying claims of nepotism and announcing the band as the support for his upcoming tour.

  • READ MORE: Liam Gallagher and John Squire on their long-awaited collaboration: “After all the dust settles, it’s 10 great songs”

The update was shared on the former Oasis frontman’s X/Twitter page last night (April 14), and comes following the announcement that his son Gene’s band – called Villanelle – will be the support act for the ‘Definitely Maybe’ 30th anniversary tour .

He previously said that he thought that the band were “good” and added: “I’m gonna put them on first for [the ‘Definitely Maybe’] tour”. Villanelle will join Cast and The View as support acts on the upcoming dates .

Now, following what seems to be some mixed responses to the announcement, Gallagher has hit back at accusations of nepotism, and shared footage of the band performing live to explain why they were chosen.

Posted last night, the video appears to be screen-recorded footage of the band playing during a live show, which they originally shared on their Instagram Stories, and comes with the simple caption: ‘Cmon’.

Whilst they currently don’t have any official music out, Villanelle have recently been spotted supporting Brummie rockers Overpass on tour – presumably where the footage was captured. Most notably, they performed at King Tut’s in Glasgow on March 21, which is the same location where Oasis were signed to Creation in an infamous debacle .

As for their sound, Villanelle seem to harness a similar Britpop influence as seen in Oasis, although also take on inspiration from the ‘90s grunge scene. This was emphasised by Liam himself, who responded to someone saying that they were “getting Kurt Cobain vibes” from Gene’s on-stage outfit, saying “That’s his hero”.

That’s his hero — Liam Gallagher (@liamgallagher) April 14, 2024

According to another recent update, Liam’s other son, Lennon, was asked if his band Automotion wanted to join the upcoming 30th anniversary ‘Definitely Maybe’ tour, but “politely refused”.

He was asked and politely refused — Liam Gallagher (@liamgallagher) April 5, 2024

Previously, Gene launched a three-piece band called Grimmo in 2018 and Liam described his music as “in your face, Arctic Monkeys style”, compared to his brother Lennon, whose music was more “spaced out, like early Verve, pretty chilled”.

He also performed with his dad in 2019 on Later… with Jools Holland , and was also seen recording some bongos on the track ‘One Of Us’ on the album ‘ Why Me? Why Not ‘.

Earlier this month, Liam again defended his decision to have Villanelle join him on tour, writing online: “I’ve given many opportunities to many young bands over the years it’s what you do if you can now it’s VILLANELLES turn if you don’t like it FUCKOFF”.

He also told a fan that the harsh words were him “putting a few mouthy c***s in [their] place”, and denied accusations of nepotism by saying: “Is it fuck he’s my son it’s what you do”.

Reverend & The Makers also backed Liam in the decision shortly afterwards too, adding how both “Liam and Noel gave us a chance when they didn’t have to”, and adding that “Anybody giving him shit for putting his lad on needs to do one. Anyone would do the same surely”

Liam will be embarking on his 30th anniversary ‘Definitely Maybe’ tour in June, which will kick off in Sheffield. He is due to perform the entirety of Oasis’ seminal album along with some “naughty” B-sides . Get any remaining tickets here .

As for his other son, Lennon, Automotion recently released their new track ‘Liquify’ produced by The Horrors ‘ Faris Badwan and inspired by old-school jungle tracks. Automotion released their debut EP ‘In Motion’ back in 2021, and their second EP ‘Ecstatic Oscillations’ in 2022.

Most lately though, the band shared a new single called ‘Lost In The Spinal Labyrinth, and confirmed that it will appear on the group’s upcoming EP ‘Dissolve’ – due for release on June 19.
