Situated on the northeastern edge of Northern Ireland, is the fascinating city of Belfast. Eventually playing a key role in the Industrial Revolution, Belfast was one of the main centers for shipbuilding. Harland and Wolff, Belfast's main shipbuilders, built the well-known RMS Titanic. This iconic ship of its time put Belfast on the map in the early 20th century as the biggest and most productive shipyard in the world. In addition to its rich history, Belfast features a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the Wonders of the World, the Giants Causeway. Take note of these incredibly strange symmetrical basalt columns formed by volcanic activity that jut out to sea between Port Ganny and Port Noffer. Not only will you delight in a remarkable view of the coast of Ireland, but you will have the chance to stroll through some of Belfast's most popular botanical gardens and castles, adorned with lush greenery and elegant landscapes.

He was timely, easy to communicate with prior to our tour, flexible (due to a rainy Irish day) and went out of his way to ensure we had a great experience. Mick showed us the Irish countryside, explained Belfast history, took us to various historical sites and TV show sites, and exposed us to a side of Ireland that only the locals get to see. Additionally, from the moment we entered his car to departing, he made us feel like family. Would highly recommend this tour. Mick is well worth the money, for the experience and service he provides. Port of Belfast and the Titanic Museum

Welcome to Belfast cruise port, Northern Ireland’s capital and its largest city, one of the most popular stops in the British Isles cruise itineraries! Belfast Harbour lies on the banks of the River Lagan on the country’s east coast and is famous for being  the birthplace of the Titanic. The port of Belfast is Northern Ireland’s largest cruise port and consists of three cruise terminals, located within a short drive from Belfast downtown. In this article, read about:

Belfast Cruise Port

Port Belfast is Northern Ireland’s largest cruise port and consists of three main docking locations: Stormont Wharf, Pollock Dock, and New Belfast Cruise Ship Terminal. See the Belfast cruise schedule

  • Stormont Wharf  is dedicated to larger cruise liners and is located on Stormont Road approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) from the Belfast city center.
  • Pollock Dock can accommodate smaller cruise vessels and is located closer to the city center, around 1.5 miles (2.5 km) from the downtown.

These terminals have facilities that include basic passenger assistance, a tourist information center, a gift shop, and parking for taxis/tour buses.

Since 2019, there has been a new cruise terminal D3 ( Cruise Ship Terminal Belfast ) located on Airport Road on the outskirts of the harbour, close to the George Best Belfast City Airport, approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) from the city center.

With its 340-meter-long quay, this terminal is designed to accommodate the world’s largest cruise ships. When there are no passenger ships in port and off-season, this terminal is used for cargo and container ships. There is a small terminal building housing a tourist information center where you can get city maps and brochures. A taxi rank, tour buses, and parking are available outside the terminal.

Belfast cruise port map

The port of Belfast is also one of the largest ferry ports serving the routes to Douglas (Isle of Man), Liverpool (England), Birkenhead (England), Cairnryan (Scotland), and a few other ports depending on the season. The majority of ferries are operated by Stena Line, one of the largest ferry companies in the world.

Getting Around & Local Transportation

  • Belfast city center is small and can be easily explored on foot.
  • The cruise lines normally offer a convenient shuttle service to the Belfast Welcome Center (visitor information centre) on Donegall Square North, located opposite the Belfast City Hall. Tickets should be purchased onboard the ship. A 5-minute walk from there is Victoria Square Shopping Centre, one of the best places for shopping in the city.
  • The taxi station is located next to the terminal building. A ride to Belfast city center takes 10 minutes.
  • As for public transport , it is available however I will not encourage you to use it as the buses don’t run very often and the closest stop is at the port gate, which is quite a fair walking distance from the dock.
  • Belfast’s main railway station is Lanyon Place Train Station (formerly Belfast Central), located near the city center, approximately a 10-minute drive from the cruise terminal. You’ll find the timetables and fares at https://www.translink.co.uk/
  • Hiring a bicycle is a fast and cheap way to get around the city since the city is not very big. Belfast Bikes rental has more than 40 pick-up and drop-off points throughout the city. You can rent them for the hour or the day.
  • If you want to go sightseeing, Belfast Hop on Hop off bus runs from City Hall and covers stops at the major city highlights including Titanic Dock and Visitor Center, St George’s Market, Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens, Belfast Castle, and others. 10 Best Things to Do in Belfast Cruise Port

The neighborhoods of Belfast boast a rich cultural offer and the city’s turbulent and interesting history is displayed through its art and architecture.

1. Belfast City Hall

The imposing City Hall is perhaps the best-known and most representative building in the city. It was built in 1906 to celebrate the appointment of Belfast as a “City” by Queen Victoria in 1888.

Belfast City Hall offers free 1-hour public tours every day led by a knowledgeable guide who provides information on the history of Belfast City Hall and its finest features. 2. Saint Anne’s Cathedral (Belfast Cathedral)

One of Belfast’s most treasured buildings, a beautiful Romanesque cathedral was built in 1899. It boasts magnificent architecture, stone carvings, huge stained-glass windows depicting characters from the Old Testament, and a huge historic significance. The cathedral is located around a 10-minute walk north of the City Hall. It is fully wheelchair accessible.

St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast

3. Belfast Castle

Built in the late 12th century by the Normans, the castle was located within the city of Belfast, but after suffering a fire in 1708, only the names of some streets remained that indicate that it was there before. Instead of rebuilding it in the same place, its owners preferred to go to the outskirts of the city and built the new Belfast Castle on the slopes of Cavehill Country Park. The new castle was completed in 1870.

Today the magnificent castle is a private center where banquets, weddings, meetings, and other large events are held. On the castle’s grounds, you can find a beautiful garden and park, an adventure playground, a gift shop, a restaurant, and a visitor center.

The castle is located a 15-minute drive from the port Belfast. To get to Belfast Castle, you can take public bus #1 from Upper Queen Street (located one block away from the City Hall) to Newtownabbey Serpentine Road and from there you need to walk 10 minutes to Belfast Castle.

4. Titanic Museum

Located in the Titanic Quarter, the same place where the Titanic was built in 1912, this museum is one of the icons of Belfast and one of the main tourist attractions of the city. This gigantic museum opened its doors in 2012 and is completely dedicated to the history of the ship. In 2016, the museum was crowned the best world tourist attraction by the World Travel Awards.

The tour of the museum is an authentic experience that allows you to access over nine galleries where you get to learn about Titanic myths and reality, its launch, Maiden Voyage, and tragic destiny. Enjoy the exploration of the re-created cabins and decks, the Shipyard Ride, and the underwater exploration theater! Belfast Titanic Museum is fully wheelchair accessible.

Titanic Museum Belfast

The driving distance between any of the Belfast cruise terminals and the Titanic Museum is approximately 7 – 10 minutes. If you are coming from the city center to the museum, the distance is approximately 2 miles and takes about 25 minutes on foot.

You can also take bus #94 from Wellington Place in the city center to Odyssey Pavilion, and then a 10-minute walk to the Titanic Museum. It is strongly recommended to purchase tickets in advance as you need to select specific times for the visit.

5. Belfast Mural Tour

If you are visiting Belfast, don’t miss the opportunity to visit its famous murals. These mainly represent the history of Northern Ireland during the last decades of the 20th century, a period known as “The Troubles”, one of the most tragic periods in European history at the turn of the century.

The tradition of political murals in Belfast dates back to 1908 when images of King William III began to be painted. This king is highly acclaimed by Protestants due to his victory over the Catholics at the Battle of Boyne in 1690. The murals were not usually permanent and they changed over time, reflecting the political problems of the moment. This is still the case today.

There are about 2000 murals scattered throughout Belfast, but it is in the Falls and Shankill neighborhoods that the most famous are found.

You can tour the murals on foot, but you will need time and desire to walk since the murals are separated from each other. Hiring a taxi is probably the most comfortable and quickest way to do it. A local taxi driver will take you around the main points of these neighborhoods and explain to you the symbols of the murals and what the different murals represent. The Belfast Hop on Hop off buses also stop at some areas where these famous murals are located.

6. St George’s Market

If your ship docks in Belfast on the weekend, then this is the place to visit if you want to enjoy local cuisine and crafts. Among the stalls of this colorful 19th-century indoor market, you can find practically everything – from fresh fruit and fish to antique items, handmade gifts, and original works by local artists.

The market has numerous places where you can enjoy delicious street food, fresh smoothies, local sweets and so much more. On Sundays, they have live music by local bands. St George’s Market is located in the heart of the city, less than a 10-minute walk from the City Hall and the shuttle bus drop-off point. Hop on Hop off buses also stops at the market.

7. Botanic Gardens

The elaborate public garden was born as a private Royal Belfast Botanical Garden in 1828 and was opened to the public in 1895. It covers 28 acres, and its main feature is an elegant domed conservatory known as “The Palm House”, a greenhouse that can be visited and where you can see various types of tropical plants.

The Botanical Gardens is located around 1.2 miles away from the city center and its City Hall, approximately 25 minutes on foot. A taxi ride from City Hall lasts 5 minutes. Gardens are wheelchair accessible and there are benches all around for visitors will walking difficulties.

8. The Ulster Museum

Situated in the same park as the Botanical Gardens, the Ulster Museum is the largest in Northern Ireland featuring rich collections of art, archeological findings, scientific artifacts, and the treasures of the Spanish Invincible Armada.

Here, visitors can explore 9000 years of Irish culture and history and learn about its turbulent history, traditions and ethnography. Within the museum, there are also zoological, geological, and botanical collections. The entrance is free of charge and provides easy access and exploration for wheelchair users.

9. Giant’s Causeway

You cannot leave Northern Ireland without having visited this natural wonder and one of the biggest tourist attractions in Northern Ireland.

According to the legend, the origin of the Giant’s Causeway is due to two giants, an Irish one named Finn MacCool and a Scottish giant named Bennandoner. They fought each other throwing stones until so many of them were thrown that they formed a path between Ireland and the island of Staffa. Bennandoner crossed it intending to kill Finn, but his wife had the idea of dressing him as a baby. So when Bennandoner arrived and saw such a big baby, he imagined that the baby’s father would be much bigger, so he ran back stomping so hard that he destroyed the stone path they had created leaving only what we can see today.

Giant's Causeway Northern Island

Declared a World Natural Heritage by UNESCO and a national nature reserve, Giant’s Causeway is one of the strangest geological phenomena on the planet and a unique landscape that you cannot miss. There are two ways to experience the Giant’s Causeway: visit the stones or take a stunning 5-mile (2.5 hours) hike along the thrilling clifftop path.

Clifftop Experience Walk departs from the ruins of Dunseverick Castle along the coastline to the Giant’s Causeway. This experience is recommended for visitors in good health conditions and fitness levels. Wear non-slippery shoes and bring a light jacket .

How to Get to Giant’s Causeway from Belfast Cruise Port?

  • Distance from the port of Belfast to the Giant’s Causeway is approximately 62 miles (100 km), about a 1h 30-minute drive each way. The best way to get there is definitely on an organized shore excursion considering the distance and your time in port. I strongly suggest you book this tour in advance because it sells out quickly.
  • If you decide to get there on your own, will need to take train 3 from Lanyon Place train station to Coleraine train station, and then hop on bus 402 or 172 to Giant’s Causeway. The journey by train itself takes 1.5 hours, but overall (with a bus and a walking portion included), it can take up to 3 hours each way. Therefore, it’s not recommended for cruise passengers.
  • You can also hire a taxi from the port of Belfast, or book a private round-trip transfer which might be a cheaper option.

10. The Crown Liquor Saloon

This gastropub is one of the oldest pubs in Belfast and is worth stopping by for a pint or a succulent meal. The building was built in the Victorian style and is known for its rustic wooden interior decoration featuring carved mahogany booths, etched glass, and gas lamps from the 1800s. It is the most famous pub in Belfast and today it has become one of the symbols of the city because it’s the only pub in the country to be declared a national monument. The pub is located in the heart of the city, only 5 minutes walking distance from the City Hall.

Duration 4 hrs

Gain a greater understanding of Northern Ireland and its culture by following a foodie guide through Belfast, pausing every so often to sample classic dishes and delicacies.

After departing from the pier, you will soon reach the heart of Belfast, where you will commence a walking tour, accompanied by a local food enthusiast. The exact locations to be visited will be determined the day of the excursion, but they will definitely be establishments that best represent the cuisine of Northern Ireland. These will be the markets, restaurants and cafés that the locals frequent, rather than those typically found in guide books.

You may well start at St. George’s Market, the oldest covered market on the entire island of Ireland. While browsing the stalls and soaking up the atmosphere, you will sample delicacies that are distinctly Irish. You may be offered a chunk of fried eel or a bite of Belfast bap, a hearty sandwich typically loaded with Irish bacon, scrambled eggs and cheddar cheese.

Continuing on to other foodie locales, you might try a few spoonfuls of colcannon, a mixture of mashed potatoes, cabbage, cream and butter. Of course, potatoes appear in all sorts of classic dishes such as Irish stew, Ulster fry and boxty, a tasty potato pancake.

Other Irish staples that you may sample include fluffy soda bread and wheaten farls. The latter is a griddle cake that is served in quarters known as farls.

Explore two contemporary landmarks that have transformed Belfast with an architectural historian that will describe how the massive projects reflect the city’s history. Victoria Square is the largest shopping center in Northern Ireland and its construction exposed much about the city’s past. Your guide will explain how Belfast’s original docks and several prehistoric settlements were unearthed as the foundation for Victoria Square was dug. These underground discoveries reveal how Belfast developed over the centuries. Belfast’s maritime heritage will come to light in Titanic Belfast, an attraction built on the exact site where the ill-fated Titanic was designed, built and launched. While browsing the exhibits, you will also gain an appreciation for the building that houses them. The aluminum-clad structure looks like four ship hulls connected to an atrium lined with metal panels much like those that covered the Titanic. The guide will point out other similarities between the ship and the building, all of them fascinating.

• Behold two ultramodern buildings with an architectural historian that will offer an insider’s view. • Discover what was unearthed during the construction of Belfast’s largest shopping center. • Be awed by the maritime-influenced design of Titanic Belfast and browse the exhibits inside.

Observe the wildlife, especially water birds, that flourishes in the diverse wetlands at Castle Espie on the shores of Strangford Lough. As an introduction to this beautifully restored avian reserve, you will follow a naturalist through the salt marshes, estuaries, tidal lagoons and woodlands. You can expect to see vast numbers of native and migratory birds, some of them rather exotic. While pausing at camouflaged bird hides that allow for up-close viewing, you may spot kingfishers, Brent geese, terns and countless songbirds such as linnets, a type of finch with an easy-to-recognize twittering call. It can be heartwarming and quite amusing to watch the newly hatched downy ducklings practice swimming and dive for food. Otters and butterflies are also abundant. The naturalist will help identify the various species and describe their characteristics. Time will also be allowed to browse an environmental art gallery and explore independently.

Belfast Cruise Port Guide

Belfast cruise port guide is an introduction to one of the most popular stops on a British Isles cruise itinerary

Belfast Cruise Terminal has been a popular stop on the British Isles cruises since the 1950s. It is one of Northern Ireland’s premier attractions and is a great place to visit. The port handles a good number of cruise ship calls.

Planning a cruise to Ireland? Belfast Cruise Terminal is the most popular port on the banks of the Lagan, with a large number of sailing to the Emerald Isle. You’ll find plenty of ship tours, package deals and tour companies here, so book early to avoid disappointment!

Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland, a city on Britain’s island of Ireland with a population of almost 500,000 and a cosmopolitan outlook that makes it a great cruise port. The city centre is an exciting place to explore and there are numerous bars and restaurants where you can enjoy quality food and drink in the evening.

Belfast Cruise Port is located at Stormont Wharf and has berthing facilities for the largest liners. There are two docks, Pollock Dock and Belfast Cruise Ship Terminal. Both docks have a total length of 177m (580ft). Stormont is primarily used by larger liners and has a sheltered pier. Pollock Dock has a wharf with no protection for yachts, however, it can be used as an alternative to Stormont Dock if needed.

The port is located on the Lagan River, which empties into the Irish Sea. The port handles over 150,000 passengers per year. The port’s harbour area is over 20% of the city’s total area. Its deepwater quay is Ireland’s longest.

One of Belfast’s most popular attractions is undoubtedly Titanic Belfast Museum, the world’s most considerable Titanic visitor experience. It sits beside the Titanic Slipways, Harland and Wolff Drawing Offices and Hamilton Graving Dock, where Titanic was designed, built and launched in 1912.

A must-see venue, Titanic Belfast is an immersive experience that takes you back to the city and dockside where it all began. Experience storytelling by highlighting the most fascinating pieces of artefacts, interacting with special effects and realistic recreations, as well as learning how technology has changed everything we knew about the Titanic.

Belfast has three locations: See Map

* D1 Belfast Cruise Terminal is used for all "cruise calls" - cruise ships just visiting. This new terminal (2019) can accommodate ships with up to 6,000 passengers and crew and it has a smart cruise visitor information centre, a gift shop, plenty of seating and free wifi plus a large coach parking area and space for shuttle buses and taxis. *  Stormont Wharf is used for smaller ships. *  Pollock Dock is used only for "turnarounds" ships starting or ending their cruise in Belfast.

Most of the time there are shuttles that run between the harbor and the city center, close to the tourist office, every 15 minutes.

This is only announced the night before, so not to jeopardize the excursion sales. The usual rate is $12 per person.

A taxi only costs £7 one way per taxi, and thus is a much better deal especially if traveling with more persons.

Belfast cruise port

Region Ireland - UK - British Isles

Local Time 2024-03-29 11:23

Port Belfast cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Belfast, Northern Ireland. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Belfast Harbour is Northern Ireland's largest cruise port and the country's capital city, with population around 340,000 (metro around 670,000). The port is located on Lagan River, which empties in the Irish Sea. The port handles over 100,000 passengers per year. The Port's harbor area is over 20% of the city's total area. Its deepwater quay is Ireland's longest. Fun fact is that there is a port town in the USA's state Maine (Waldo County) with the same name - Belfast ME .

The city houses the biggest Titanic museum in the world - Titanic Belfast (maritime heritage monument built at the site of the shipyard Harland & Wolff). Among the other popular tourist attractions is Game of Thrones, Crumlin Road Gaol Giant's Causeway, Walls of Derry, Ulster Museum, Exploris Aquarium.

Belfast received city status in 1888. The city was a center of Ireland's tobacco-processing, rope-making, linen and shipbuilding industries. During the early-20th-century, Harland & Wolff (the shipbuilder of RMS Titanic ) was the world's largest and most productive shipyard. Belfast played a key role in the Industrial Revolution (1820-1840) and until the latter half of the 20th century was a global industrial center. At the beginning of the 20th century, industrialization and migration made Belfast Ireland's largest city.

Currently, Belfast remains a center for industry, arts, higher education, law and business, and is considered Northern Ireland's economic engine. During the Troubles (ethno-nationalist conflict in Northern Ireland in the late-1960s-1998), the city suffered greatly from the intense political violence, but after recovering now enjoys substantial economic growth. The entire downtown area has undergone considerable expansion, mainly around Victoria Square.

Belfast is served by two airports - George Best Belfast City Airport (within the city) and Belfast International Airport (approx 15 mi / 24 km to the west). Belfast Harbour is a major seaport, with industrial and commercial docks dominating the coastline.

Port Belfast Harbour

Port's cruising season runs between April and October. Belfast Harbour (port locode GBBEL) is currently ranked the UK's fastest-growing seaport. Statistics show 35 cruise ship calls and handled 54,800 passengers (in 2010), 43 boats (in 2012), up to 84 boats and 143,500 passengers in 2016 (21% over 2015).

During season 2017, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 93 ship calls (estimated 156,000+ passengers), marking a record year since the seaport's cruise shipping business started in 1996. By the end of 2017, the Port celebrated 600+ cruise liner visits for the past 21 years. CMV Marco Polo was the 2017 season's first boat (arriving on April 21). Princess Cruises ship Caribbean Princess had scheduled a total of 14 stops in 2017.

It was estimated that the cruise industry's impact on Northern Ireland's economy is ~GBP 15 million (EUR 16,9 million) per year, with projected growth up to GBP 22 million by 2020. This forecast indicated that Port Belfast could see cruise tourists hitting the 230,000 mark in just 2 years. For 2018 were expected 110+ cruise vessels to dock here.

In 2018, the port had scheduled a total of 117 ship calls with estimated 200,000+ passengers. In 2019 (the Port's record year) were handled 146 calls (31% increase) from 35 different cruise companies, and ~285,000 passengers. July was 2019's busiest month (32 ship calls). Maiden port visits were booked for Spirit of Discovery ( Saga UK ), CMV Vasco da Gama , Costa Mediterranea ( Costa Cruises ' first), Disney Magic .

Belfast is directly linked by ferries with Cairnryan (Scotland) , Liverpool (England) and Heysham (England). All these ferry routes are operated by STENA LINE with regularly scheduled daily crossings. STENA LINE is the largest ferry company on the Irish Sea, with the biggest fleet and the most routes operated between Ireland and UK (a total of 228 weekly crossings). The company also serves the routes from Dublin to Holyhead (Isle of Anglesey, Wales UK) and from Rosslare-Europort to Fishguard (Wales UK) . STENA also offers direct service Rosslare to Cherbourg ()France) (3 return crossings weekly).

  • In 2017, Belfast ferry port reported a record year with handled 514,000 units (vehicles and wheeled cargo) or 3% increase over 2016. Car shipping volumes were ~360,000 (2,5% increase) and the number of ferried passengers was 1,5+ million (2,5% increase). The biggest increase (10,5%) was reported for the bus traffic.
  • STENA's Belfast ferry services in the period 2012-2017 grew by 15% (car volumes), 13% (passenger traffic) and 19% (freight traffic). STENA LINE operates from Belfast with 7 ferries and 22 daily crossings.

The Northern Ireland-based company LCC Group invested in Port Belfast Harbour a total of GBP 30 million into facilities and equipment for processed coal. The coal (annual capacity around 0,5 million tons) is exported directly to Scandinavian and mainland European countries, as well as to North Africa, Saudi Arabia, Australia. LCC Group's investments are in increasing the harbour's draft and cranage capability. The company's facility is the world's most sophisticated coal processing plant. The purified coal is used for ferroalloy production and silica metals (used in solar panels and medical equipment). LCC imports raw coal from Columbia.

For FY2018 (fiscal year), the port reported record cargo volumes (over 24 million tons) and trade growth (over (24,6 million tons, or +3,8% over FY2017). Coal imports and exports (by LCC) grew over 37% (to over 1 million tons). The largest coal exports were to Australia, Saudi Arabia, Russia. Animal grains and feeds grew 7,5% (to 2,35 million tons). STENA's freight vehicle volumes grew 3% (to 532,000 units) and the ferry passengers - to 1,5+ million.

On September 17, 2019, Belfast Harbour announced plans for iconic waterfront developments. When completed (in 2024), the GBP 254 million (~EUR 290 M) project will result in a modern place attracting both tourists and local citizens with opportunities for living, working and leisure.

  • The project is expected to generate 7000+ new local jobs and support ~3500 construction jobs, GBP 500 million in gross value (added to Northern Ireland's economy), GBP 300 million (in wages annually) and GBP 4 million in city rates (annually).
  • Belfast Harbour's waterfront development works will include deepening the shipping channel (to allow access to larger-sized boats), creating deepwater quays (new), completion of "City Quays 4" (2 million ft2 land developments), creating Catalyst Inc (5-storey office building, science and technology hub), Giant's Park (new film studios), Pierpont Plaza (new public event space).

Port's 2019-2023 plans (GBP 254 million investments) included cranes and material handling equipment upgrades, installing new/larger ramps, building new warehouses, and installing "Smart Port" digital solutions.

Until 2019, the port's largest cruise liner (by passenger capacity ) was Celebrity Reflection (max 3655 pax plus 1000 crew). On September 26th (2019) here docked MSC Meraviglia (2017-built) carrying 5386 passengers from 30+ countries. Meraviglia visited Northern Ireland as part of the 17-day Transatlantic crossing from Germany to the USA (RepositionCruises.com).

On October 7, 2021, Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth made the Port's 1000th cruise ship call. Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Belfast Harbour paused its cruise shipping operations for the period March 2020 through June 2021, restarting with UK-only itineraries.

On October 1, 2019, Belfast Harbour revealed details on the GBP 40 million project to upgrade Victoria Terminal 3 (VT3 container terminal) which connects Northern Ireland to all global markets via Rotterdam Holland , Antwerp Belgium and Le Havre France . By this 3-year project were invested GBP 28M for purchasing 10 new gantry cranes and conducted major terminal development works (by the contractor company F.P. McCann).

  • The 27-acres VT3's capacity will be increased by around 1/3. Belfast Harbour's container terminal is operated by Irish Continental Group and as of 2019 handles 250+ annual crossings between Belfast and Europe.
  • The new gantry cranes can handle larger boxships . Two STS cranes (Ship-to-Shore) were purchased from Liebherr, with the first scheduled for delivery in 2020-Q1. Eight new RTG cranes (Rubber Tyre Gantry) were purchased from Kalmar. The first five RTGs were delivered in November 2019. The first two were scheduled to be ready in 2020-Q1.
  • In 2018, VT3 handled nearly 128,000 TEU-containers (1,5% increase over 2017).
  • In June 2020, at VT3 was installed a new (GBP 6,6 million) ship-to-shore gantry crane (fully electric). The Liebherr crane weighs 765 tons and has lifting capacity 40x TEUs (each with max weight 40 tons) per hour.

In 2019, Belfast Harbour invested GBP 0,5 million (EUR 0,583M) to Ireland's first dedicated cruise terminal. In 2021, Cruise Belfast enlarged the terminal building by 215 m2 (2314 ft2). The extension facilitated baggage handling, security scanning, and homeport passenger processing.

Following the COVID crisis, in 2022 (April through November) the Port handled 141 cruise ship calls (52 different vessels from 33 companies, including 18 maiden/first visits) and 250,000+ tourists.

In 2023 (March through October), Port Belfast Harbour had scheduled 165 cruise calls (+15% over 2019) from 62 different ships (34 different cruise brands) with estimated ~340,000 tourists (passengers+crew). The record season featured 6x embarkations by the new UK-based brand Ambassador Cruise Lines (ship Ambition), and 15x maiden/first-time visiting ships. Eventually, in 2023, the cruise port handled 158 ship calls (+8% over 2019) from 57 different vessels (32 companies/brands) of which 13 were maiden visits. Also in 2023 was welcomed the Port's 2 millionth cruise tourists (since 1996).

Harland & Wolff Shipyard (Belfast)

"Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries" is a major construction company specializing in shipbuilding and ship repairs, as well as design, structural engineering, offshore projects. The company is most famous for building the White Star Line sisterships RMS Olympic (1911), RMS Titanic (1912) and HMHS Britannic (1915).

The shipyard's main facilities are two of Europe's largest drydocks - with a capacity to handle vessels with LOA length 556 m (1824 ft) and 335 m (1099 ft) - plus several fully-serviced berths.

  • In 2003, the company was nearly awarded the shipbuilding contract for the Cunard liner RMS Queen Mary 2 but was not given the required British Government guarantee. As a result, the building contract was awarded to the French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique in St Nazaire .
  • In 2017, Harland & Wolff were awarded the contract for the drydock refurbishment of the cruise ship Azamara Pursuit (ex P&O Adonia) .

In December 2019, the shipyard was acquired by InfraStrata plc (2007-founded, UK-based company) that also fully owns the subsidiaries Portland Gas Esp, InfraStrata Heavy Industries, Infrastrata UK and InfraStrata Energy UK.

In 2020, under the new ownership (InfraStrata) at Harland & Wolff were conducted several cruise ship drydock refurbishments, including of 3x Viking OCEAN boats. The shipyard's facilities were upgraded with new dock gates, robot welding machines, power lines, among others.

In 2021, the shipyard's outdoor Repair Dock provided its first general maintenance support to Virgin Voyages ' boat Scarlet Lady , and serviced P&O UK 's boat Azura - both without drydocking/having to take the vessels out of service. Also in 2021, at the shipyard's Building Dock (indoor) was serviced the crude oil tanker Dorset Spirit (IMO 9780782, Canada- flagged ) which by LOA length (280 m / 919 ft) is the largest vessel so far drydocked in Belfast.

Belfast cruise terminal

Port Belfast has two cruise ship docks. Stormont Dock (Belfast Harbour) has wharf length 457 m (1500 ft) and is located approx 3 mi (5 km) north of downtown, and is used by larger liners . Pollock Dock has a wharf length of 177 m (580 ft) and is used for berthing of smaller vessels.

Belfast cruise terminal is located 2 mi / 3 km from downtown (direction north-east) with available shuttle bus service to Donegall Square North. The Visit Belfast Welcome Centre there provides all the necessary assistance for tourists, including information, advice, schedule changes, booking services, box office (special events and tours), gift shop, luggage left, internet.

The cruise port welcomes its passengers with music performances. At the terminal, you can find useful brochures and maps of the city. There is nothing interesting to see close to the Belfast cruise port terminal.

A good option for transport is the local metro system. If you want to rent a car from the Belfast cruise port terminal, available offices are of Budget and Avis. If you prefer taxis, be aware to chose the London-style taxis (classic black car), because the non-official can overcharge you.

(NEW) Belfast Cruise Ship Terminal D3

In 2013, port authorities announced plans for building a new cruise terminal (project cost GBP 15 million).

The new passenger terminal's berth was dredged to allow docking to even the world's largest cruise vessels . The facility is located close to the city's Titanic attractions - Titanic Belfast, Titanic's Dock and Pump-House, SS Nomadic (White Star Line's tender ship launched in 1911 and used to transfer passengers to and from the ships RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic ).

Due to environmental issues, the project was delayed 2 years (initially scheduled for completion in 2015). Construction works were re-scheduled for completion in 2019. The new cruise terminal was built on seaport's outskirts (close to Belfast City Airport) and officially opened/inaugurated on July 29, 2019. During no-ship days and off-season, at the new dock are berthed cargo- and container ships . Terminal's parking is at an additional cost (GBP 9 per day).

The new cruise terminal (managed/staffed by Visit Belfast) uses the latest digital media technologies to showcase Northern Ireland’s best-known tourist attractions. Amenities also include dedicated parking lots for shuttle buses, taxis, and tour coaches.

The new cruise terminal was inaugurated/officially opened on July 29, 2019, during the port call of Crown Princess . The ceremony was attended by Councillor John Finucane (Lord Mayor of Belfast), John McGrillen (Tourism NI's CEO), Gerry Lennon (Visit Belfast's CEO) and Domenico Lubrano Lavadera (Crown Princess ship's Captain).

  • Belfast City Hall: you can easily reach it with the shuttle service from the Belfast cruise port terminal. The amazing building is located close to Visit Belfast Welcome Centre. The building is a Classical Renaissance-style, made of Portland stone. There are free guided tours from Mon to Sat.
  • Titanic Quarter: discover the Titanic story. You can visit Titanic Belfast – the largest museum of the ill-fated liner.
  • Waterfront Hall: one of the leading conference centers in the world.
