Indulgence in Eastern Canada (Small Groups, 8 Days)

This itinerary surprised me. I had been to Toronto before and had enjoyed the falls, the food and the hockey however the surprise to me were the other cities. Ottawa had lots to offer as it was the capital / head of the parliament and the architecture was stunning along with the Fairmont Hotels which become a feature of this itinerary throughout, especially the famous Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City. What I enjoyed the most were the French influences in Quebec City and Montreal, at times much more European than Canadian. The food throughout was superb with many choices so make sure you enjoy the fresh Canadian air and walk lots! thanks Luxury Gold - next stop Japan.

Barrie council adds additional day of free transit for seniors

A city bus parks at the terminal in Barrie, Ont. (CTV BARRIE NEWS)

Seniors in Barrie will soon have an extra day to use transit for free throughout the city.

On Wednesday council approved a plan to extend the free transit for seniors program to two days a week.

Currently, seniors can ride for free on Thursdays, which has been in place for roughly three years.

City staff determined that the program will be extended to Tuesday once they have consulted with members of the senior and accessibility advisory committee.

"If we can make a small move to try to nullify some of those impacts and make it so that our senior population can get out and about and access the grocery stores, the pharmacies and things that they need and the Parkview Centre, then I think it's obviously a very good thing," says Mayor Nuttall.

Nuttall says it will cost the city roughly $30,000 in revenue annually.

He believes that splitting up the days will help seniors living on fixed incomes, and with inflation and rising living costs, this is one way to help.

"These are folks that have paid taxes and have worked in our communities for many, many, many years and built up what we get to take advantage of. So we need to make sure we take care of them when they are more vulnerable in their elderly ages," says Nuttall.

Council also approved a plan to install bike lanes on Grove, Dunlop and Blake streets.

With the change, vehicles will not be allowed to park on Grove Street East between Bayfield and Johnson and on Blake from Dunlop to Steel.

Before the project goes ahead, city staff will look into the feasibility of building the bike lanes into the existing roadways, which could take a few months to plan.

Fare hike coming for Barrie Transit, but question is when

2020-01-16 Barrie Transit RB

Maybe this year, certainly next year, taking the bus in Barrie will cost you another quarter.

As part of the city’s 2023 operating budget, city council could consider a 25-cent increase to Barrie Transit’s cash fare, bringing it to $3.50 a ride this year — with similar increases for multi-ride fare cards.

“With the increased cost pressures related to inflation and fuel costs, the option to advance an additional year within the fare strategy is presented as an option to help mitigate the overall impact to the general tax levy,” said Brent Forsyth, Barrie’s director of transit and parking strategy.

“If council approved the advancement of the fare strategy by one year, it would yield an estimated $210,000 of additional revenue for 2023," he added.

Barrie councillors begin debating this year’s operating and capital budgets Feb. 8.

The draft 2023 operating budget for Barrie Transit, worth $25.3 million, is funded by $6.3 million from fares and passes, $400,000 from advertising revenue and $3.3 million from Ontario gas tax, with the remaining approximately $15.5 million funded by the general tax levy, Forsyth said.

Barrie Transit’s 12-year fare strategy, approved by the last council in late 2019, includes annual and periodic price adjustments during the next three terms of council.

Next in the fare strategy is another 25 cents in 2024, bringing the price to $3.50 from $3.25, but Forsyth’s ‘new investment and service recommendations’ pages in the budget say fare increases may need to be considered earlier to share the city’s financial burden of inflation and fuel with transit system users.

But Forsyth also says these fee increases would push Barrie Transit to the higher end of bus fares compared to transit in similar cities.

Fare increases would include 10 adult rides increasing to $30 from $28, an adult monthly pass for $95 from $89 and a family day pass of $10 from $9.50.

The budget pages also look at the impact of higher transit fees on riders.

They say the most vulnerable in the community could be affected, including seniors, those with low incomes and riders with accessibility needs, it could affect ridership if people choose to use transit less because of higher fares, which could lead to decreased funding from upper government levels, and reduce rider satisfaction and increase complaints.

“We could assess some of those items following the implementation of the new fare structure, but it would be difficult to predict the impact of each of the items listed under the impact section,” Forsyth said.

His ‘new investment and service recommendations’ budget pages also give Barrie councillors a way to save money on transit costs, again from increases in fuel costs and inflation, along with funding reductions from upper government levels.

The 2023 transit operating budget includes Transit ON Demand in the Salem and Hewitt’s subdivision areas beginning in November 2023, service that was approved in the 2022 budget. That service could be deferred until November 2024, which Forsyth said would save about $200,000.

But again, there could be short- and long-term impacts.

They include affecting residents’ ability to get to work, attend medical appointments and shop for groceries and other necessities, along with reducing connections to other bus routes and GO Transit.

Transit ON Demand service is a morning/evening peak-hour bus that accommodates the actual ridership demand, with a third peak bus available if ridership warrants it. Transit ON Demand is without a fixed schedule or route. Users can book their trip through an application and then bus travel is optimized through a computer-based system. The service operates within a specific zone, allowing riders to travel from bus stop to bus stop within the zone on demand.

Barrie Transit began operating this service as a pilot program in August 2020 and the city says it provided short travel times, good on-time performance and good reviews from riders.

In late 2021, the city reported the Salem area had 396 occupied housing units with more than 1,000 residents, and was forecasting 1,431 residents by 2022. The Salem subdivision is located in south-Barrie, near the city boundary with Innisfil — west of Veterans Drive, south and north of Salem Road, down to and past McKay Road West to the municipal border.

Hewitt’s had 132 occupied housing units in 2021, and 359 residents, and the city was projecting 849 residents in 2022. The Hewitt’s subdivision is an area farther east, south of Mapleview Drive East and north of Lockhart Road.
