Outdoor enthusiasts come in a wide range of income levels, and many of them might wonder: Where can they find a home that suits their lifestyle as well as their paycheck?

To find out, we at Realtor.com® dove into U.S. Census Bureau statistics along with our own real estate listings data to pinpoint the top cities for outdoor enthusiasts at a variety of homebuying price ranges. We uncovered some surprisingly bargain-friendly outdoor meccas for buyers willing to go off the beaten path, as well as luxe locations for house hunters who want nothing short of the best in al fresco fun.

For listings priced below $500,000, Ketchikan, AK , is the top city; it’s where homes sell for a median of $445,000. Situated near Misty Fjords National Monument , this is one of the most southerly metros in Alaska, surrounded by snowcapped mountains. It’s known for its annual salmon spawning and wildlife viewing—including bald eagles and bears—and it draws in visitors from around the world.

Other bargain-friendly outdoor cities include Spirit Lake, IA , at No. 2 and Brainerd, MN, at No. 3. Many of the most affordable cities with lots of outdoor enterprises are clustered in the northern part of the U.S., especially the Midwest, known for its longstanding affordability.

Best outdoor meccas for medium-priced homes

In the $500,000 to $1 million price range, we uncovered plenty of metros offering an upscale outdoor lifestyle. Kill Devil Hills, NC , comes in at No. 1, followed by Ocean City, NJ , and Walla Walla, WA .

Like the meccas for bargain homes, we see a trend here, too: Many of these places are neighboring, peripheral, or secondary markets to higher-priced areas that have many of the same attributes.

For those with few budget constraints, the top city for outdoor enthusiasts with median home prices above $1 million is Napa, CA , followed by Key West, FL , and Breckenridge, CO .

The Oxbow Public Market , located in the heart of the valley, offers local, seasonal produce and artisanal foods in an open-air setting, reflecting the region’s culinary culture set against its natural beauty.

Far from California's wine country, Key West comes with a vibrant maritime heritage. A glance at the Key West fishing tournament schedule shows it's all about the kind of lifestyle offered there.

Breckenridge , famous for its world-class ski slopes, is a winter sports paradise. Beyond the area's tourist-dense ski resorts, there's the Breckenridge Nordic Center , which offers access to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, catering to outdoor enthusiasts who prefer a tranquil yet active engagement with nature.

These luxury locales provide exclusive outdoor activities that define their local culture, offering lavish amenities to those seeking a sophisticated, active lifestyle.

What makes a city great for outdoor lovers

The definition of an "outdoor" lifestyle is fairly subjective. One person's al fresco adventure might be another's mosquito-fueled nightmare. And how to go about measuring the outdoor qualities of any given place isn't an obvious exercise.

This led us to data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau about the number and types of businesses in any given area. By selecting the business types that support outdoor adventures, and calculating the number of those businesses per capita, we can learn where residents are supporting these businesses. This leads us, in a roundabout way, to communities that reflect the outdoor lifestyle by virtue of the free market's support of those businesses.

Not surprisingly, many areas with the most outdoors-oriented businesses per capita include exclusive, high-priced locales like Jackson, WY, and Breckenridge, as well as historic vacation destinations like Martha's Vineyard and Hawaii. But we also found more reasonably priced places where the local businesses focus on the great outdoors. This will come as good news to homebuyers: Because no matter what budget you have, you can find a place where the trails meet your doorstep, the rivers beckon you to visit, and the mountains call out for exploration.

Our analysis combined the March median list price for every U.S. metropolitan and micropolitan statistical area, with the Census Bureau's most recent "county business pattern" data, aggregated by statistical area and calculated as a per capita rate, using the following business types (in descending order, based on the total U.S. count):

LOST STREETS THE EL REMEMBERS

On two recent days, braving ungodly heat in the upper 80s with matching humidity, I marched around with the camera in Ozone Park, specifically up and down Liberty Avenue and 101st Avenue. I had last walked 101st back in 2008, when I found a plethora of ancient store signage. I plan on presenting these, and what replaced them, on another day; since I’m desiring an “easy” weekend, I’ll do a relatively short post today about Liberty Avenue, its elevated train, and the ancient street names its signage preserves.

When you ride the A train on el above Liberty Avenue, you are actually riding the easternmost section of the old Fulton Street El, which was built in the 1880s from the waterfront at the old Fulton Ferry and extended out into Queens in 1915. The line was closed in sections on Pitkin Avenue and Fulton Street in the 1940s and replaced by an IND subway as far as Rockaway Avenue in 1936, and then extended under Pitkin and Pennsylvania Avenues in 1948. In an era when the then-Transit Authority still had the will to get creative, the IND was extended out to Lefferts Boulevard and the Rockaways in 1956 by employing the old elevated structure atop Liberty Avenue, building a new station at Grant Avenue.

The first elevated station along Liberty Avenue east of where it emerges from the tunnel is at 80th Street. Even though the station was recently renovated, its signs retain its old Hudson Street name ( which the newly renovated stations on the Astoria Line do not ). The MTA sign shop even went so far as to include Hudson Street on the small signs on station columns.

Here’s an excerpt from a Belcher-Hyde map of this area from 1918 (note, the el came to Liberty Avenue in 1915; Liberty is the red line in the center). I have circled Hudson Street, now 80th Street, and Boyd Avenue, now 88th Street, which has also been retained in station signage.

As you can see in 1918 Ozone Park, and Woodhaven north of it, was a bit muddled as it was filled with real estate developments notated on the map such as Liberty Heights and Eldert Park that have been lost to time as they knitted into the overall grid. Not only were the numbered streets formerly named, they also had older names before the newer names. I wish the names had been preserved and not numbered; Hudson had formely been Bengal before it became 80th.

A trio of Jewish cemeteries , Mokom Shalom (“Place of Peace”), Bayside (named for its proximity to Jamaica Bay) and Acacia (named for the trees, most likely) can be found between Liberty and Pitkin Avenues and 80th and 84th Streets. The former two have been here since the 1860s, with Acacia joining them in the 1890s. Unfortunately all three cemeteries have been under relentless attack from local vandals since the 1970s, and some parts of the cemeteries remain in decrepit condition. The barbed wire seems to be of little deterrence.

This stretch of Liberty Avenue has a collection of cylindrical Dwarf lampposts installed in 1959 (the date is embossed on the base). These under-the-el lamps are rapidly losing out to davit poles (in which the mast curves instead of supporting a mast) in other parts of town. What’s surprising is that a full-size version was produced as well.

There are a couple more very old street names represented along Liberty Avenue but I have a couple of things of interest first. I thought this was the front entrance of catering hall Villa Marcello , but this chalet-type structure is actually the back door; there’s a much grander entrance on Rockaway Boulevard and 97th Street . Good thing, too; the rumble from the el trains must be disconcerting in this spot.

Next to Villa Marcello, there’s an MTA electrical substation, and you can see the spur track built in the 1950s to allow subway trains onto the erstwhile Long Island Rail Road tracks to the Rockaway Peninsula. LIRR service to the Rockaways began during the 19th Century, but a fire caused irreparable damage to the bridge across Jamaica Bay in 1950, and the LIRR sold the right of way to what was then NYC Transit Authority — causing the TA to extend IND service to both Lefferts Boulevard and the Rockaways in 1956. It was the largest addition to the subways since the IND completed most of the 6th Avenue line in 1939-1940, and would be the biggest until the Q was extended up 2nd Avenue in 2017.

I have sometimes spoken about Transit Hubs That Should Have Been such as the LIRR Montauk Branch, now strictly freight, crossing the J train on the Jamaica el in Richmond Hill , or even one that exists and does very well in Woodside, where the Flushing El #7 train crosses the LIRR main branch, a stop for every LIRR train in the system. (There is even a plan advanced by NYC comptroller Scott Stringer that would allow Queens residents to pay the same amount for LIRR trains as they do for subways, but don’t hold your breath on that one.) Here’s another such crossing, this one in Ozone Park, where the abandoned LIRR Rockaway Branch crosses the el on Liberty Avenue. Reactivating the LIRR Rockaway Branch to connect with the Queens Boulevard subways has often been mentioned. but it would cost billion$. (Bronx residents can look forward to the reactivation of several disused stations for Metro North customers .)

Here we see the old elevated Rockaway line, some now abandoned towers carrying power lines and the old Ozone Park station at 101st Avenue in the distance.

The New York City Transit Authority is now a division of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 1968, which dates this sign to before that.

There are two more stations on the Liberty Avenue El that retain, or at least are co-named, with currently numbered streets: Oxford Avenue (104th Street) and Greenwood Avenue (111th Street). This Belcher Hyde 1918 map shows both. I have circled the names in red and marked Liberty Avenue in blue. The map is also fascinating in that it shows the various rel estate projects then in development; few of the names have survived.

In an amazing coincidence I’ll get to later, the Oxford Avenue name is survived by the Oxford Bakery (or Oxford Bake Shop as it is called now) at Liberty and 104th. Some old fashioned gold leaf signage can still be seen under the awning.

Competition for the Oxford directly across the street may offer Guyanese delicacies. I’ll get into it when I discuss Liberty Avenue on a future page, but eastern Ozone Park or south Jamaica (take your pick) features immigrants from the South American country of Guyana, especially the Indo-Guyanese, immigrant descendants of Indian laborers who moved to Guyana in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Thus, Indian tradition, religion and cuisine are especially prevalent here.

Here’s the coincidence I was talking about. The Greenwood Avenue name is preserved on station signage but also… in another bakery! Grenwood Quality Bakery seems to be rated lower than Oxford. I have to stay out of bakeries, as my blood sugar has been borderline.

Some quick, though definitely not definitive research. It appears that the Greenwood bakery predates the Oxford bakery. I’ve found references to a Sunlight Bakery back to April 1921, but cannot ascertain as to when Greenwood came into being. As for Oxford, the earliest mentions of a bakery at the location was in November 1929; with the name Freilander attached appearing by 1935. Prior to this bakery an earlier commercial tenant appears to have been a shoe store. The earliest mention as Oxford did not come up until 1944, but obviously it was already open by then based on the Municipal Archives tax photo. However it may have simply been a change of name at the time as Freilander seemed to still be involved with the establishment ’til at least 1943. More as it comes in, if anything else does…

Great posting. It’s interesting that while Hudson St., Boyd Avenue, Greenwood Avenue, and Oxford Avenue, exist today only as A train station names, the other two stations on the Liberty Ave. elevated in Queens take the opposite approach. Rockaway Blvd., between 88th (Boyd) and 104th (Oxford) Streets, originally was also called 96th Street in deference to one of the north-south minor streets that intersect Liberty Avenue. The station location is also bisected by a very important north-south arterial boulevard, the combined Woodhaven-Cross Bay, which changes names when it crosses Liberty. However, the station name tablets have never recognized Woodhaven-Cross Bay. Lefferts Boulevard, the final stop, was for many years also called 119th Street in deference to its location in the street grid, but that moniker has not been used for the last fifty years. Old subway maps of 1920s vintage called it “Lefferts Avenue – 119th St.” The boulevard moniker is not quite accurate because Lefferts is no Woodhaven. It’s rather narrow, but does host a major north-south bus route, Q-10 which connects the Kew Gardens IND subway to JFK Airport and was the primary public transit route to JFK prior to the AirTrain.

The Santa Monica California based Armét & Davis, later renamed Armét Davis Newlove Architects, designed more than 4,000 buildings in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Indonesia. One of the firm's projects was the Kona Kai restaurant at the Marriott Motor Inn in Philadelphia.

According to Hidden City Philadelphia ,

"In Sven A. Kirsten’s The Book of Tiki, which is as authoritative as the subject gets, the Marriott-run Kona Kai flagship at the mouth of the “Golden Mile” (City Line Avenue at the Schuylkill Expressway) is described as a 'true temple of Tiki.' The 'Golden Mile' refers to the mile long stretch of City Line Avenue that boasted some of the finest mid-century modern architecture in the Northeast. Kona Kai, which represented Marriott’s response to Hilton’s alliance with the still-popular Trader Vic empire and Sheraton’s relationship with Kon Tiki, was closed in 1985, not long before its parent Marriott Motor Hotel was demolished in the late 1980s."

Irwin & Leighton, the archirectural firm which celebared its 100th anniversary in 2009, designed the Marriott Motor Lodge in Philadelphia. According to Irwin & Leighton ,

"The 'Swinging Sixties' are remembered as a time of social change and upheaval. Trends and traditions rapidly came and went, and with the changes in culture came changes in the way Americans lived, shopped, worked, and learned. The good economy of the times presented opportunities for continued growth, which Irwin & Leighton realized through strong leadership and performance. e company earned vital new customers who were pioneers within their industries. Of particular note is Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which, to this day, remains one of Irwin's core customers.The hospitality industry continued to grow during the 1960s as customers began to expect a higher standard of amenities. The 'mom ‘n’ pop' roadside motel became a thing of the past and the grand urban hotels, too, were less popular. The modern consumer was most concerned with convenience, cleanliness, and comfort. These were the virtues of the well-known Marriott Motor Inn, built by Irwin & Leighton in 1962 along City Line Avenue in Bala Cynwyd."

Insider Information

The Marriott Motor Hotel was the sole hotel in Lower Merion township in 1980. The Marriott was one of the largest hotels in the United States, and it hosted conventions and meetings year round, bringing visitors from the world over to the Bala-Cynwyd area. In a 1979 prospectus for Lower Merion Township bond sales, the Marriott was listed as the principal employer in the area, with 1,140 employees. By comparison, other major employers were the Gulf Oil Company with 350 employees; Liberty Mutual Insurance Company with 400 employees; General Refractories Comapny's corporate headquarters with 650 employees; WCAU-TV and Radio Studios with 380 employees; and Germantown Savings Bank (GSB) with 230 employees. WCAU-TV moved from Philadelphia to City Line and Monument Avenues in May 1952 and the Marriott was built directly across the street in 1961. The WCAU studio, in its early days, had an entire frontier town built behind its studio. According to the Lower Merion Historical Society , "Live TV dramas entitled 'Action in the Afternoon' were filmed in the open air, with all the accompanying noises of City Line traffic and airplanes overhead. Later six additional radio stations were built in Bala-Cynwyd."

Even though the Marriott was located just over the "city line" in the Main Line (Lower Merion Township), the hotel became a legendary go to attraction for local and visitors alike. The Marriott was situated in a trendy area of Bala Cynwyd along with high end retail of Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor, as well as residential neighborhoods including new condominium communities. The NFL (National Football Leaue) was also headquartered in Bala Cynwyd because Bert Bell, the NFL Commissioner from 1946-1959 (when he died of a heart attack), was a Philadelphia native. In January 1960, Pete Rozelle, the 33-year-old General Manager of the Rams, was selected as Bell's replacement, and he relocated the NFL's headquarters from Bala Cynwyd to Manhattan.

The Marriott was also a favorite too among Philadelphia media since the Marriott was located across the street from WPVI-TV (6ABC, Action News), WCAU-TV (CBS), and within walking distance of numerous radio stations (WCAU-FM, Hot Hits, WIOQ, WFIL, WYSP, EZ101, WDAS, etc.). Back in the 1960s and 1970s, you could also book on over to "The Library", a popular 1970s era disco at 2 Decker Square (adjacent to Saks) on City Line for dining, drinking and dancing.

Sirloin & Saddle, Marriott Motor Hotel, Philadelphia

The Marriott was also the setting for various TV and movie filming locations. Here's the opening title sequence of a little known 1988 Orion film entitled "The In Crowd". In the movie, Joe Pantoliano portrayed Philadelphia record show host Perry Parker who saw himself as a rival to Philly's own Dick Clark and American Bandstand. The In Crowd was filmed in part at the Marriott Motor Inn's Kona Kai.

On the grounds of the office building at 401 City Avenue in Bala Cynwyd (the former site of the Marriott Motor Inn on City Line Avenue), there is an historic overcup oak tree that has lived there for more than 300 years. In 1976, when the Marriott Motor Inn occupied the site, the International Society of Arboriculture and the National Arborist Association jointly recognized this significant tree in the Bicentennial Year as having lived here during the American Revolutionary period (1776-1976) when The Declaration of Independence and Constitution of the United States were drafted in Philadelphia.

Arborists have listed the oak tree as a "Penn tree," which means that it was alive before William Penn visited the area. Back in the 1970s, the tree provided great shade to the outdoor playground area towards the back of the Marriott hotel.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.
