The 5 best treks in Morocco for wildlife, Roman ruins and mountain summits

Sarah Gilbert

trailfinders tour of morocco

Get training now for a walk in the High Atlas mountains and scale North Africa's highest peak © Shutterstock

Morocco is home to some of the world’s most striking mountain landscapes. Ramble through fragrant forests of cedar trees and walk along verdant valleys where time has stood still. More adventurous hikers scale North Africa’s tallest peak or head off on demanding multi-day treks across rugged massifs.

With peaks and valleys to suit all abilities, atmospheric eco-friendly lodgings, and a tasty tagine waiting for you at the journey’s end, here are our top picks for trekking in Morocco.

there are several checkpoints on the way to the summit of Jebel Toubkal, Morocco

1. Jebel Toubka

Best high-altitude hike.

27km (16.7 miles), 2 days

The High Atlas – Morocco’s loftiest mountain range, known to the locals as Idraren Draren or Mountains of Mountains – runs diagonally across the country for almost 1000km (620 miles) and is a trekker’s paradise, especially in spring and autumn.

The biggest draw is the ascent of Jebel Toubkal , North Africa’s highest peak at 4167m (13,670ft). Much of the trekking is done on the first day, a six-hour hike zigzagging upwards through a craggy valley. Stop to acclimatize and share campfire tales with fellow climbers at a rustic refuge, before setting off at first light to scale the snow-dusted summit. You’ll need snow equipment in the winter months but if you’re blessed with brilliant blue skies, you’ll have views all the way to the Sahara.

With more time, you can take on the challenging week-long Toubkal Circuit and, as well as tackling Toubkal, you’ll meander between remote Amazigh (Berber) villages, crossing fertile valleys, rocky massifs, and panoramic passes.

The mountain village of Imlil (90 minutes from Marrakesh ) is a hub for hikers and the place to hire a mountain guide (compulsory in Toubkal National Park ) and book a bed at one of the refuges. There are plenty of other treks to try: stay in style at the sustainable Kasbah du Toubkal and you can hike to their remote lodge in the Azzaden Valley.

2. The Monkey Trail (3M Squared Loop Trail)

Best for wildlife watching.

7.4km (4.6 miles), 2.5 hours

Close to Ifrane – aka Morocco’s Little Switzerland, thanks to its Alpine architecture and spotless streets – Ifrane National Park is spread over 500 sq km (310 sq miles) of the Middle Atlas mountains. It’s famed for its fragrant forests of Atlas cedars and troops of endangered Barbary macaques, a one-of-a-kind primate that was once widespread in Europe and North Africa but is now only found in small pockets of Morocco and Algeria’s northern mountain ranges.

The park has several well-marked, easy-to-moderate trails but – as the name suggests – the Monkey Trail will give you a good chance of spotting the mischievous macaques, as well as other forest residents, such as foxes and wild boar. It’s great for trail runners and mountain bikers too, shaded by lofty oak and cedar trees.

Enlist a guide, such as Saleh Boudaoud , to discover more about the park’s flora and fauna and the threats the macaques face from human interaction and poaching for the exotic pet trade.

A clear natural pool in Akchour, Talassemtane National Park, Morocco

3. Akchour Waterfall and God’s Bridge

Best for waterfall lovers.

13.8km (8.6 miles), 5 hours

Tucked into the green folds of the Rif Mountains , charming Chefchaouen is famed for its endlessly photogenic blue-hued medina. But once you’ve explored its cobbled streets and people-watched from its pretty squares, take to the trails of the vast Talassemtane National Park with its luminous waterfalls and forests of firs.

This popular hike starts in the village of Akchour , around 45 minutes from Chefchaouen by grand-taxi. Head towards the hydroelectric dam and a fork in the road where the well-trodden left-hand trail dips through evergreen forest and between moss-covered rock formations. After around 45 minutes you’ll reach the first waterfall but keep going until you reach the larger cascade that plunges into an emerald-green pool – perfect for a refreshing dip before you make your way back to the dam.

Once there, you can extend the hike by taking the right-hand trail and the steep scramble to God’s Bridge , a natural arch straddling two cliffs. Then stop at one of the roadside stalls near the Akchour end of the trail for a well-earned tagine, or immerse yourself in the park with a stay in a stunning wood-and-stone cabin at the eco-friendly Ermitage d’Akchour .

4. Jebel Saghro Circuit

Best for off-the-beaten-track trekking.

90km (56 miles), 5 days

Sandwiched between the High Atlas and the Sahara’s shifting sands in south-east Morocco, the Saghro Massif possesses a stark beauty, with yawning canyons, flat-topped mesas, otherworldly rock formations, and arid desert-scapes.

Its stony tracks are frequented more by the semi-nomadic Aït Atta tribe than tourists and while there are steep ascents and descents, trails are generally lower-lying and less challenging than the High Atlas. Its highest peak, Amalou n’Mansour, sits at 2712m (16,85ft) and most passes are between 1500m (932ft) and 2500m (1553ft).

The Saghro Circuit takes five days starting at Tagdilt near Boumalne Dades and ending at Kalaat M’Gouna. Add an extra day to reach the peak of Jebel Kouaouch (2595m/1612ft) with views to rival those from Toubkal. If you’re going without a guide, you’ll need to be confident at navigating and stock up on supplies before you set off.

And there are plenty of shorter out-and-back trails and one-way walks. To the south, the Kasbah Hôtel Aït Omar in the kasbah-studded, oasis town of Nkob makes a great base, with its vegetarian-friendly restaurant and insider tips for routes and local guides.

Man walks through the remains of the Roman city of Volubilis

5. Moulay Idriss to Volubilis

Best for culture vultures.

4km (2.5 miles), 45 minutes one-way

Just 90 minutes from Fez and 40 minutes from Meknes , the holy, hilltop town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is the perfect starting point for a leisurely ramble to the archaeological site of Volubilis , a far-flung outpost of the Roman Empire turned Unesco World Heritage Site.

Walk downhill from the bus station to a roundabout where signs point you in the direction of a slower pace of life, as you wind your way through pine forests, olive groves, and across a fertile plain towards triumphal arches, ancient columns, and glittering mosaics.Head back to the whitewashed town on foot, by taxi or donkey and refuel with a traditional three-course feast on the terrace of Dar Zerhoune while you drink in the views.

The Atlas Mountains rise from the Atlantic Ocean and stretch all the way to the Moroccan Algerian border. At its highest point is Mount Toubkal at 4167metres: a popular trekking peak most of the year round. These mountain ranges dominate the skyline across much of the central parts of the country, while to the south, the Saghro; rising out of the rocky desert, is the birthplace of some of the oldest tribes of Imazhigen people: the indigenous inhabitants of Morocco; the Ait Atta nomadic tribes.

Morocco is for all lovers of the outdoors, for anyone who would like to experience the spectacular diversity that the mountains and valleys offer the adventurer.

Our treks and hikes are from 1 day to 2 or even 3 weeks for the die-hards.

Day 3 Merzouga: Desert Camp

Keep the camera handy as you continue east to the sprawling expanse of the Sahara Desert wilderness. trek in morocco Hassan Amzil

Have you been itching to get out of your regular routine and experience an exciting outdoor adventure? Look no further than Morocco. This North African country offers some of the most stunning trekking in the world, with a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural wonder. You’ll traverse through the scenic High Atlas Mountains, spotting tiny Berber villages and herds of goats along the way. You’ll wander through fragrant eucalyptus forests and come upon gushing waterfalls and deep gorges. At night, you’ll gaze up at the Milky Way glowing brightly, free of light pollution. Whether you want to take a casual day hike or tackle a multi-day trek , Morocco has a perfect trail for you. The hospitality of the local Berber people will make you feel welcomed and cared for each step of the journey. By the end, you’ll leave with memories of majestic landscapes, vibrant culture, and new friends that will last far beyond your return flight home. This is why Morocco needs to be your next trekking adventure. The mountains are calling – it’s time for you to go.

The Majestic Atlas Mountains: A Trekker’s Paradise

The Atlas Mountains are a trekker’s paradise, with jagged peaks, hidden valleys, and trails that lead to Berber villages and ancient Kasbahs. Spanning Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, the Atlas Mountains feature scenic vistas and hiking routes for all skill levels.

For beginners, start with a day hike in the foothills around Marrakesh. The lush Ourika Valley and the waterfalls of Setti Fatma are popular options, with trails ranging from 3 to 7 miles. Or head to the Dades Gorge, nicknamed the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” for striking rock formations and hikes from easy to strenuous.

For multi-day treks, the Toubkal National Park is a must. At the heart of the High Atlas, North Africa’s highest peak, Mt. Toubkal (13,671 ft), offers a challenging 2-day ascent with breathtaking views of the Sahara. The week-long, 50-mile Toubkal Circuit trek circumnavigates the national park, hitting mountain passes and villages along the way.

Staying in Berber Villages

A highlight of trekking in Morocco is staying in local Berber villages. Book a family-run auberge or mountain refuge and you’ll experience Moroccan hospitality at its finest. Feast on hearty tagines, sip sweet mint tea, and stargaze under some of the clearest night skies in the world. Many villages also offer cultural experiences like henna painting, bread making, and local music.

With the Atlas Mountains’ majestic peaks, secluded trails, and welcoming Berber culture, Morocco offers an unforgettable trekking adventure like no other. Lace up your boots and discover the beauty of these North African highlands. Your toughest choice will be deciding where to start!

Popular Moroccan Trekking Routes

Morocco offers some of the best trekking in North Africa with stunning scenery and routes for all levels. Two of the most popular treks are the Toubkal Circuit and the Mgoun Loop.

The Toubkal Circuit revolves around North Africa’s highest peak, Jebel Toubkal. This 4-6 day, 40 km trek takes you through small Berber villages and up the rocky paths of the High Atlas Mountains. The route isn’t technical but the high altitude requires decent fitness. The reward is panoramic views from the 4,167 m summit.

For a more challenging multi-day trek, consider the Mgoun Loop. This 7-9 day, 75 km circuit winds through the Central High Atlas Mountains, traversing rugged terrain, deep gorges and high passes over 3,000 m. You’ll camp under starry skies, spot wildlife like Barbary sheep, and learn about local Berber culture. The Mgoun region sees few tourists so you can experience traditional village life.

Other Options

There are many other scenic trekking routes like the Tichka Plateau trail, Akhiam Canyon trek or M’Goun Valley trek. For short day hikes, head to stunning spots like Akchour Waterfalls, Tin Mal Mosque or Tizi n’Test pass.

With the Atlas Mountains, desert dunes and coastline, Morocco offers diverse landscapes for hiking and multi-day trekking adventures suitable for all experience levels. The spring and autumn shoulder seasons from March to May and September to October are ideal times to visit, with comfortable temperatures and smaller crowds.

So lace up those hiking boots and prepare for an epic trekking getaway in Morocco! The mountain trails and Berber hospitality will leave you with memories that last long after your tired feet have recovered.

Trekking in Morocco: What to Expect

Trekking in Morocco will be an adventure unlike any other. Here are a few things you can expect:

Diverse Terrain

Morocco offers a variety of landscapes to explore, from the High Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Desert . You’ll traverse rocky cliffs, sand dunes, gorges, and oases. The terrain is rugged but rewarding, with panoramic vistas around every turn. Be prepared for ascents and descents on uneven ground. Proper hiking boots, walking sticks, and conditioning are musts.

Dramatic Scenery

The scenic beauty of Morocco will take your breath away. In the High Atlas Mountains, you’ll be surrounded by snow-capped peaks, alpine lakes, and fragrant cedar forests. The Sahara Desert scenery is just as stunning, with seas of sand dunes, palm groves, and desert sunsets that light up the sky. Don’t forget to bring extra camera batteries and memory cards!

Delicious Food

Replenish your energy after a long day of trekking with delicious Moroccan cuisine. Hearty tagine stews, fluffy couscous, savory kebabs, and fresh salads will satisfy your appetite. Mint tea is the perfect pick-me-up. Most treks include meals, but you may want to pack some snacks as well in case of longer hiking stretches.

Local Culture

Interacting with the Berber locals in small villages along your route is a highlight of trekking in Morocco. You’ll gain insight into a way of life that has endured for centuries. Be respectful of cultural norms, dress conservatively, and learn some basic greetings in Arabic or Berber. Your local guides can offer guidance on appropriate behavior and etiquette.

An unforgettable trekking adventure in a exotic land awaits you in Morocco. With the right mindset and preparation, you’ll be rewarded with memories to last a lifetime. The challenging yet rewarding hikes combined with stunning scenery, culture, and cuisine will lure you back again and again.

Best Time of Year for Trekking in Morocco

The best time for trekking in Morocco is during the spring (March to May) and fall (September to October) shoulder seasons. During these months, the temperatures are mild and the chance of rain is low. The summer months of June through August can be brutally hot, especially in the desert, with temperatures over 100 F. Unless you plan to trek in the High Atlas Mountains , summer trekking is not recommended.

Spring (March to May)

Springtime in Morocco is delightful. Wildflowers are in bloom, adding vibrant pops of color to the landscape. Daytime highs in the popular trekking regions like the High Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert range from 60 to 80 F, making it perfect weather for hiking and camping. The spring months also fall outside of the peak tourist season, so trails and campsites are less crowded. Rain is uncommon, especially the further south you go.

Fall (September to October)

Autumn is another prime time for trekking in Morocco. Like spring, the temperatures in September and October are moderate and rainfall is scarce. You’ll miss the summer heat and crowds, but the foliage has not yet started to change colors at the lower elevations. Higher up in the Atlas Mountains, the fall foliage can be stunning, with orange and red maples set against a backdrop of evergreen cedars. Daytime highs are usually in the 60s and 70s F, dropping down to 40s or 50s F at night, so pack layers.

The weeks on either side of these shoulder months, especially April and November, can also be suitable for trekking depending on the weather. But in general, for the best combination of mild temperatures, low chance of rain and smaller crowds, aim for March to May and September to October. The weather during these months is, as the Moroccans say, “Al bis sahha”—just right! With the right gear and planning, a trekking adventure in Morocco this spring or fall will be perfect.

Morocco Trekking Safety Tips

Trekking in Morocco is an amazing experience, but there are a few safety tips to keep in mind. As with any outdoor activity, preparation and caution will help ensure you have an enjoyable trip.

Research the Route

Do some research on the specific route or trek you want to take before arriving in Morocco. Know how long it will take, the difficulty level, and what gear is required. Check recent reviews from other trekkers to be aware of any potential hazards or closures. The more you know about what to expect, the better prepared you’ll be.

Hire an Experienced Guide

Unless you’re an experienced trekker in remote areas, hiring a local guide is highly recommended. A guide will know the trails, can help you avoid getting lost, and assist in an emergency. They can also provide information about the culture and geography. Look for guides with solid reviews who specialize in the area you want to trek.

Check the Weather and Dress Accordingly

Moroccan weather varies based on location and time of year. Check the forecast for your specific route and dates of travel. Be prepared for a range of conditions like strong sun, rain, snow or wind. Dress in layers, wear proper hiking boots, sun protection, and carry extra clothing. Temperatures may drop significantly at higher elevations, even in summer.

Carry Essentials and a Map

Bring a backpack to carry essential gear like food, water, a first aid kit, pocket knife, flashlight, fire starter, toilet paper, hand sanitizer and a map of the area. Pack more food and water than you think you need in case of emergencies. A map, compass and GPS device can help ensure you stay on the trail.

Advise Someone of Your Itinerary

Tell a trusted friend or family member about your trekking itinerary before you leave. Provide details about the route, guide contact information and your expected dates of return. Give them updates if plans change to ensure someone is aware of your location in case of an emergency.

Following these tips will help you have a safe and enjoyable trekking adventure in Morocco. With the right preparation, you can experience the natural beauty of Morocco with confidence. Happy trails!

What Gear to Pack for Trekking in Morocco

When trekking in Morocco, the gear you pack will play an important role in your comfort and enjoyment. Here are some essential items to bring:

  • Hiking boots: Morocco’s terrain can be rugged, so pack sturdy boots with good ankle support and traction. Waterproof boots are best in case of rain. Also bring comfortable shoes for non-hiking activities.
  • Layers of clothing: The weather in Morocco’s mountains can change quickly. Pack breathable clothing like t-shirts, hiking pants, shorts, jackets, and a rain shell. Don’t forget a hat, sunglasses, and gloves. At higher elevations, temperatures drop at night, so pack warm pajamas and a heavy coat.
  • Backpack: For multi-day treks, you’ll need a backpack to carry all your gear. Get one with padded shoulder straps, multiple compartments, and a frame to distribute weight. For day hikes, a small daypack will do.
  • Sleeping bag and pad: If camping overnight, pack a sleeping bag rated for the season and a sleeping pad for insulation and cushioning. Some treks provide basic mountain huts, but you’ll still want a sleeping bag.
  • Trekking poles: Trekking poles will aid your balance and take pressure off your knees going up and down hills. Pack poles that collapse for easy transport.
  • Other essentials: Don’t forget a flashlight or headlamp, pocket knife, matches/lighter, basic toiletries, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, snacks, reusable water bottle, basic first aid kit, chargers, camera, and any important medications.

By packing the necessities and being prepared for various weather conditions, you’ll be ready to fully experience the natural beauty of Morocco’s mountains. The stunning vistas and cultural encounters will make the effort of trekking at high altitudes worthwhile. With the right gear and sense of adventure, Morocco’s trekking routes should be at the top of your bucket list!

Top Moroccan Treks: The Ultimate Bucket List

Morocco offers some of the best trekking in North Africa, with stunning scenery from the High Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Desert. Here are some of the top treks to add to your bucket list:

Toubkal National Park Circuit

This challenging 4-5 day, 40+ mile circuit winds through the highest peaks of the High Atlas Mountains, including a summit of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak at 13,671 feet. You’ll hike through alpine meadows, rocky crags, and small Berber villages with stunning views in all directions. An experienced guide is highly recommended for this trek due to the difficult terrain and altitude.

Mgoun Massif Traverse

For a true wilderness experience, the 6-8 day, 50+ mile traverse of the Mgoun Massif takes you through a remote region of the High Atlas with secluded valleys, gorges and rarely visited peaks. You’ll stay in basic Berber campsites and gites along the way, so you’ll need to be self-sufficient. This trek requires navigating unmarked trails, so it is best done with an experienced local guide.

M’Goun Valley

An easier 3-4 day trek ideal for beginners in the foothills of the Mgoun Massif. You’ll hike 15-25 miles through the picturesque M’Goun Valley, staying in family-run mountain refuges and camping along the way. Experience Berber culture as you pass through mud-brick villages and lush oasis valleys. The trails are well-established, so you can do this trek on your own or with a guide.

Sahara Dunes Trek

For a completely different landscape, head south to the Sahara Desert for a 2-3 day camel trek into the dunes. You’ll ride camels through the desert, camp under the stars in a Bedouin-style tent, and experience the silence and wonder of the dunes. Most treks start from the oasis towns of Merzouga or Zagora, where the dunes of Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga await. An unforgettable way to experience the Sahara!

From the snow-capped Atlas Mountains to the sun-drenched Sahara, Morocco offers a variety of stunning treks for all abilities. With the right balance of challenge and reward, it’s the perfect destination for your next trekking adventure.

How to Get Around in Morocco

Getting around Morocco is quite easy, whether you want to travel by bus, train, taxi or guided tour. Here are some tips to help you navigate during your trekking adventure:

Public Transit

Morocco has an extensive bus and train system connecting most major cities and towns. Both are budget-friendly options, though busses tend to be more frequent, especially in rural areas. Trains are best for long distances, like traveling from Marrakesh to Fez or Tangier. Buy your tickets in advance and arrive at the station 30 minutes before departure.

For shorter trips within cities or to nearby destinations, taxis are readily available. Fares are metered, so negotiate the price before getting in. Grand taxis are shared between up to 6 passengers, so you may have to wait for it to fill up. Petit taxis are non-shared, so you’ll have it to yourself.

Renting a Car

Driving in Morocco can be challenging for tourists due to chaotic traffic and road conditions. However, renting a car gives you the most flexibility to explore at your own pace. Major roads are well-maintained but smaller routes may be unpaved. Buy rental insurance and familiarize yourself with the rules of the road before hitting the open road.

Guided Tours

For multi-day trekking in Morocco’s scenic mountains and deserts, booking a guided tour may be your best option, especially if traveling solo. Reputable companies like Intrepid Travel and G Adventures offer small group tours with experienced local guides. They handle logistics, accommodations and most meals, allowing you to focus on enjoying the adventure.

Staying Safe

Exercise caution walking alone at night, especially for women. Petty crimes like pickpocketing can happen in crowded tourist areas. Dress conservatively outside of beach destinations and be respectful of local cultural norms. Check current events before your trip and avoid any protests or demonstrations. The arid, mountainous terrain means temperatures fluctuate dramatically, so pack for hot and cold weather. Staying hydrated and avoiding tap water will keep you in good health for adventure.

Following these tips will help ensure smooth travels so you can make the most of your trekking experience in magical Morocco ! Focus on the journey, not the destination.

FAQs: Planning Your Dream Morocco Trekking Adventure

Planning a trekking adventure in Morocco leads to many questions. Here are some of the most frequently asked ones to help you prepare for your perfect Morocco trek.

When is the best time to go trekking in Morocco?

The best times for trekking in Morocco are spring (March to May) and fall (September to October). During these shoulder seasons, the temperatures are mild and the crowds are smaller. Summers can be very hot, especially in the desert, and winters quite cold in the mountains.

How difficult are the treks?

Morocco offers treks for all skill levels. Short day hikes to multi-day treks over rugged terrain are available. Some easier treks include the Akchour Waterfalls and Tizi Oudiate Pass. More challenging treks include summiting Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak, and trekking through the Mgoun Massif. No matter the difficulty, be prepared for varied terrain and temperature extremes.

Do I need a guide?

For most treks, especially multi-day ones, hiring a local guide is highly recommended. Guides know the routes and terrain intimately, handle permits and accommodation, and ensure your safety. Some remote areas may require guides. For easy day hikes, you can go it alone if experienced, but a guide is still useful for learning about the natural surroundings and culture.

What gear do I need?

You’ll want typical trekking gear—hiking boots, clothing for hot and cold weather, sleeping bag, backpack, etc. But also bring gear for specific Moroccan conditions:

•Scarf—To protect from sun and sand

•Sunglasses—Intense sun at high altitudes

•Hat—To shade from sun

•Walking poles—For balance on rocky terrain

•Headlamp—For poorly lit paths or camping

•Camping gear—Tent, sleeping pad, stove, etc. for some treks

•Sandals—For stream crossings or in towns

With the right mindset of cultural respect, appropriate gear for the conditions, and allowing ample time to adjust to the altitudes and terrain, a trekking adventure in Morocco can be the trip of a lifetime. The scenic vistas, unique culture, and challenging routes will reward any trekker looking for an exotic outdoor getaway.

So pack your bags, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in the Moroccan mountains. The stunning vistas, welcoming Berber villages, and challenging terrain will delight any avid trekker. Whether you want to summit North Africa’s highest peak or simply enjoy a scenic day hike, Morocco offers trails for every skill level. The delicious tagines, mint tea, and Arabian nights atmosphere will replenish your energy for the next big climb. What are you waiting for? The Atlas Mountains are calling your name. Turn off your phone, leave your stresses behind, and embark on a Moroccan trekking getaway you’ll remember for years to come. The mountains, culture, and hospitality will work their magic on you.

How does it work?

TRAILMASTERS HOLIDAYS are self-drive safaris. The idea is to either bring your own vehicle from home or fly and hire one in Morocco, and travel within the expedition as a self sufficient unit, with your own camping equipment, cooking facilities etc, but with the full support and back-up of TRAILMASTERS.

WHEN BOOKING ON you will speak to one of our expedition leaders in our UK office who will discuss fully with you how the safaris work and the different routes available. TRAILMASTERS want to ensure this Adventure Safari is the best holiday you have ever had, and this means careful planning from the outset.

ONCE YOU ARE BOOKED ON you have access to our pre-trip information service, and Trailmasters will advise you on vehicle preparation, what equipment you need and will manage any red tape involved in getting either you or your vehicle safely into and out of Morocco.

ALL TRIPS BEGIN NEAR GIBRALTAR The choice of route to southern Spain is of course yours, but Trailmasters can advise you of the options available.

10-12 WEEKS PRIOR TO DEPARTURE you will receive the finalised itinerary, and full info pack (around 20 pages) confirming all the arrangements for meeting up, and providing important background information about your holiday and the country you will be travelling in.

FLY DRIVE clients can fly into Marrakech, where they will collect their vehicle and equipment, and be accompanied until they join up with the safari group.

WE TRAVEL IN A CONVOY . For the WHOLE of the safari the group will be led by a Trailmasters expedition leader, accompanied by their Moroccan guide, travelling in one of their fully equipped escort vehicles. Between them the crew will speak most European languages, Arabic and the local dialects.

TOTAL MILEAGE in Morocco will be about 1250 miles. Daily mileage will vary between 50 and 120 although there are built in rest days with no driving. On the first and final days of the safari about 250+ miles might be be covered as we travel through the Northern areas of the country

DRIVING CONDITIONS will include metalled road, forestry tracks, rocky mountain passes, riverbeds, sand, dried salt lakes, desert piste and plains. Any 4x4 vehicle in good condition is ideal for this, and should cope admirably with our routes.

DAYS 'ON THE ROAD' will be leisurely in pace starting about 0800 hrs and ending about 1600hrs. There will be stops to buy provisions, for photos and sight-seeing, and breaks for lunch and snacks; at times we may only travel for half a day and there will be a least 2 non-driving days (if you choose)

OUR ACCOMMODATION will normally be under canvas, sometimes on sites with full facilities while others will be in the wilderness. Trailmasters will cover all campsite costs. Sometimes it may be possible to upgrade and take a room at a modest cost in an Auberge, and occasionally when we are in a city a hotel becomes a necessity.

FOOD can be bought locally on route; most days we can get fresh bread and water and in the villages and towns there are usually markets offering a wide variety of fresh meat, fruit and vegetables - don't worry the Trailmasters crew will help and advise with shopping! Sometimes during the day we might stop at a cafe, and in the evening, some camp-sites will have restaurants, where you can sample the local cuisine if you choose.

COMMUNICATING with other vehicles while on the road is done via C.B. Radio. Morocco has a new and extensive mobile phone network, and provided you have a dual band mobile you will be able to contact the UK.

WE KNOW that your holiday represents both a major event and a significant financial outlay. So, from an organisation that has been operating in the Adventure Holiday business in Morocco since 1982 you get much more than just promises. We are completely confident that no other organisation, wherever based can beat us for value, quality, content, safety and security.
