Free Barcelona Walking Tours

barcelona tours free

There are several types of free walking tours in Barcelona, Spain with most companies employing local guides and offering both a Gothic Quarter as well as a Gaudi/Modernism tour.

But there are also free tours that focus on street art as well as a free bike tour available.

In this post, we will explain your options, and provide schedules, and a calendar.

In Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, there are many self-guided tours as well as talks at museums and historic sights that truly cost nothing.

It's easy to walk around Barcelona, especially the Gothic Quarter and other older neighborhoods.

However, most people understand the term 'free tours' to be guided walks that operate on a ‘name-your-own-price’ model or what’s usually called a ‘tips-only-basis’.

Free Tour Barcelona

There is no cost to take a tour. So, technically, these tours are free.

After the tour, you are encouraged to decide how much you thought it was worth or what you could afford, even nothing.

According to reviews on Google and TripAdvisor, past participants seem to leave between €5-€15 per adult.

The tours listed below are run through us. More tours are available in the following sections.

How to find the guide

Our friendly guides will be waiting by the fountain in the middle of the square holding a big green umbrella and wearing a bright green vest and a name tag.

How to get to the meeting point

Nearest metro stop: Liceu (L3). Take the exit named “Sortida: Liceu” and walk down La Rambla towards the sea (the main Opera House will be on your right). After 2 minutes you will see a Kentucky Fried Chicken on your left. Take the next left into the square (Plaça Reial).

Other Free Tours in Barcelona start at the same meeting point. If you want the quality of a Runner Bean tour be sure it is a Runner Bean guide.

Meeting Point

Tour Highlights

Plaça reial.

Only a step away from the busy “Las Ramblas”, this square is certainly one of the most picturesque in Barcelona. Some of its bars and restaurants hide secrets that will be revealed by the guide. It’s also the meeting point for our Gaudí Free Tour .

PLAÇA REIAL

PLAÇA DEL PI

A beautiful square in the middle of the Gothic Quarter with the XIV century Santa María del Pi church and some of the most beautiful sgrafittos in the city. If tasting some local delicacies is what you are after, you will find them in its outdoor food market.

PLAÇA DEL PI

JEWISH QUARTER ("EL CALL")

Not only the oldest part of the Gothic Quarter but also one of the most intriguing places in Barcelona. Walk through narrow passages and past ancient houses following the hidden clues to find out what happened to a thriving Jewish community.

JEWISH QUARTER (

PLAÇA SANT JAUME

This has been the centre of political life in the City for over 2,000 years. Today, the main government buildings dominate the square. Many festivities in Barcelona start or end at this place so maybe you will be lucky enough to see some of the Catalan traditions performed here.

PLAÇA SANT JAUME

BARCELONA CATHEDRAL (exterior only)

Situated in the traditional spiritual centre of Barcelona, “La Seu” is one of the most impressive cathedrals in Spain. Its XV century cloister has been called “the loveliest oasis in Barcelona”. Thirteen geese dwell in the courtyard reminding us of a barbarous crime.

BARCELONA CATHEDRAL (exterior only)

PLAÇA SANT FELIP NERI

The only drawback of Plaça Sant Felip Neri is to actually find it. Hidden at the edge of the Jewish Quarter, you will feel as if you are in a small village, miles away from busy Barcelona. A favourite with filmmakers, this peaceful place also has a few tales to tell the visitor.

PLAÇA SANT FELIP NERI

THE ROMAN CITY

Roman heritage is all over Barcelona, its impressive city wall appearing in the strangest of places. But there is much more than just the wall: a Roman treasure from the first century B.C. is waiting for you inside the patio of an apartment block!

THE ROMAN CITY

MEDIEVAL CITY & PLAÇA DEL REI

Stepping into this square is like travelling back through time to when the count-kings lived in its medieval Royal Palace. King Ferdinand, Christopher Columbus and the Spanish Inquisition all have something to say in this Plaza.

MEDIEVAL CITY & PLAÇA DEL REI

SANTA MARIA DEL MAR

It has been called “the Cathedral of the Sea” and from the outside you would never guess the magnificence that is waiting for you inside. A masterpiece of the Catalan Gothic and a delight for the eyes. Just beside it, our tour ends in a very special place for the Barcelonans.

SANTA MARIA DEL MAR

Important Info

  • Reservations for the Free Tour Barcelona Gothic Quarter are essential as, in order to maintain the quality, numbers are limited in all our tours.
  • Our Free Walking Tours are geared towards independent travelers. If you are a group of more than 6 people please contact us for more information.

Barcelona Private Tours & Free Walking Tours - RUNNER BEAN TOURS

How does the free tour system work?

This is the title given to tours that work on a donation basis (at the end you can give the guide what you felt the tour was worth). In our small company we are confident enough to let you decide the value of the tour. You can not get a fairer system and this ensures that our guides give their best service every tour.

Do I need to make a reservation for the free tours?

Reservations are essential as for quality purposes, numbers are limited in all our tours. If you are a large group of 7 or more you will need to book a private tour.

What if I arrive late to the meeting point?

We can only hold reservations until the starting time so it is very important to arrive before then. Occasionally a tour might be full and late arrivals won’t be able to join in. This also includes customers with a reservation as their space will have been given away to the people on the waiting list.

Is there a lot of walking involved?

Not really. As long as you can do a short stroll around a city you are ready to walk a Runner Bean tour.

Is the tour wheelchair accessible?

Yes. There are a couple of small inclines on the tour but this is never a problem. If you visit the Roman Temple, there is a small ledge that leads into the hallway of the house but from this area you can still view the columns.

What should I bring?

During the summer it can get very hot so don't forget your sunglasses, sun-tan lotion and a bottle of water. Although the temperatures in Barcelona are mild for most of the year, in winter it can be cold so dress accordingly. You will also need to cover your shoulders and wear clothing that goes beneath your knee if you would like to visit the Cathedral cloister.

What if it rains?

Our Walking Tours run in all kinds of weather. In the case of heavy rain the tour will run as usual so please bring suitable rain gear.

Can I leave before the tour ends?

That is not a problem but please let your guide know so he/she doesn't wait for you at the next stop.

Do we stop for a break?

We generally stop for a quick toilet break (5 minutes or so). The tour is not too long so we think that a food or drink stop is not necessary and you can decide where you would like to go afterwards. Your guide will be more than happy to help you with recommendations.

Free Walking Tours by Locals

Barcelona | granada | lisbon | london | malaga | madrid | prague | san sebastian, runner bean tours barcelona.

We are Gorka (from Spain) and Ann-Marie (from Ireland). In March 2010 we founded Runner Bean Tours with the idea of offering visitors friendly, fun and informed walking tours in Barcelona . Our team consists of ourselves with a small group of local guides and we are always ready to welcome you with a big smile and share our intimate knowledge of the area.

We offer different types of scheduled tours as well as private tours. The Barcelona free walking tours run every day, except for a 4 day break during the Christmas period so all of us can enjoy the holidays with family. The other scheduled tours are offered depending on the time of the year and private tours on the customer’s preference.

One of the policies of the company is that the guides are knowledgeable about their subject. Also, there is no hard selling on our tours. It is just not our style as we believe in honest recommendations that keep our customers happy.

Please feel free to browse around these pages or visit our company’s website or Free Walking Tours Barcelona page if you need any more information.

Looking forward to meeting you soon in Barcelona 🙂

We all know that the arrival of multinationals can push the small man out of business and the walking tour industry is no different. This is why a few of us, local companies with a like-minded vision, got together to be sure that you can still hear about us. This website is our meeting point where we can introduce ourselves and tell you what we do. We strongly believe that keeping it small and local is the only way to achieve great quality . Read more

Because we, as guides, live and breathe our city's everyday life, a great inside knowledge is something that already comes in the package. With professional, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and fun guides , the tours on offer have been highly recommended through guidebooks, internet sites and mouth to mouth (our favourite one!). Our walking tours are not about selling other products, it is about offering a great product in itself. Hard selling is just not our style. Read more

If you have had enough of manufactured tourism and you enjoy discovering and learning about the places you visit from a more local point of view, maybe we are what you are looking for. Each of the walking tour companies in the network is individually listed only in their own cities so their incomes generate within their communities. A big plus: walking and taking public transport when necessary is also a great way to protect the environment. Read more

Barcelona Historic Centre

barcelona tours free

They say Barcelona was founded by either mythological Hercules or Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca, father of Hannibal, one of the greatest military commanders of all times. So much the legends, the truth is that the city was a political center of the Catalan region for at least 2000 years since the Romans built their city there. Walking around the Barri Gotic, the Gothic Quarter you still see old walls and the grid of streets typical for Roman cities. An excellent harbour and a beautiful setting made Barcelona develop fast. The Old Town bears traces of all the powers that ruled it through the ages: the Romans, the Visigoths, the Moors and the Aragones. The concept of the city changed at the turn of the 19th and 20th century when Barcelona went through rapid urban development, architectural remodeling and became a center of a fascinating architectural style called Catalan modernism known around the world because of the works of the ingenious Antoni Gaudi. Standing against Francisco Franco Barcelona was devastated and severely punished. It was here, living opposite Franco, that George Orwell wrote his memoirs “Homage to Catalonia.” The development of the city was accelerated by the organization of the 1992 Summer Olympics (the Barcelona effect!). Today it is one of the most popular cities in the world combining rich history, culture, amazing works of artists like Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró and all the joys of the Mediterranean coast.

Walk with us through the labyrinth of small, winding streets and tranquil plazas of the Barcelona Old Town to discover its fascinating history, culture, dining and drinking scene. Take a chance to see the residence of Aragonese kings, seat of the Catalan government, ancient churches and palaces as well as one of the oldest synagogues in Europe. The Old Town went through some substantial restoration works in the late 19th and early 20th century and from a humble district changed into a major tourist destination. Hence, next to original Roman and medieval structures you will see some modern and neo-Gothic ones, like the beautiful Bishop’s Bridge or the facade of Barcelona Cathedral. All forming a unique and charming mix waiting there to be admired!

During this 2 hour free walking tour we will see and discover:

  • Gothic Quarter
  • Born Quarter
  • King’s square
  • Plaza Cataluña
  • Jewish Quarter
  • Bishop’s Bridge
  • Sant Jaume Square
  • Fossar de les Moreres memorial square
  • Barcelona’s Cathedral
  • Palau de la Generalitat – the seat of Catalan government
  • Sant Felip Neri square
  • Barcelona’s Roman Wall
  • Barcelona’s Medieval City Hall
  • Santa Maria del Mar (Cathedral of the Sea)
  • and much, much more!

What Free Walking Tour to Take in Barcelona, Spain

O ne of the best ways to quickly get to know a city you are visiting for several days is to take a free walking tour when you first arrive. Especially across Europe, there are a handful of companies that provide free walking tours in different cities.

These free tours provide a more interactive and historical approach to a city than you would normally get just walking around with a printed travel guide.

Barcelona, Spain has an endless list of places and museums to visit and photograph. To get a better overview of the city we joined the free walking tours with Generation Tours .

The Best Free Walking Tours in Barcelona:

What you will visit in the free tour of barcelona:.

The first walking tour we took is the free walking tour of Barcelona . Our tour guide was named Alvi, an amazing history and food enthusiast. The tour starts at 10:30AM or 3:00PM daily, on the steps of the Gothic Cathedral on Pla de la Seu.

Plaça Sant Felipe Neri

The Saint Felipe Neri Plaza is a small and quiet square near the Gothic Cathedral. The square boast a church, hotel, beautiful fountain in the middle.

This plaza has important history from the Spanish civil war. During a bombing of the city, a bomb fell in the square and did not immediately explode. The church also runs a school, so after the bomb fell, everyone tried running to a nearby bunker. As the schoolchildren were running by, the bomb exploded, killing two adults and 40 kids

The plaza is also featured in Woody Allen’s film Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Mount Taber is the home to the first Roman settlement in the city. The term mount is used loosely, as it is only 16.9 meters above sea level. Don’t get too tired on the hike up.

At the summit you can see some 2000 year old Columns of the Temple of Augustus Barcelona, in a very small courtyard.

Baixada de Santa Eulalia

Saint Eulalia is the co-patron saint of Barcelona, who according to the story, at age 13 was tortured and killed for being catholic.

Legend has it that this street is where Saint Eulalia was rolled down a hill in a wine barrel full of glass and nails. When she was taken out of the barrel at the bottom alive, it was decided to finally kill her.

With an interesting history, it is now just a street with a hill.

Plaça del Rei

The King’s Plaza is primarily surrounded by the Grand Royal Palace. Home to the Kings of Aragon, which features one giant room the size of the palace, used for state presentations.

It is remembered as the center of the Spanish Inquisition, where public killings would take place.

Plaça de Sant Jaume

Town Hall of Barcelona, Spain

St James Square is the center of old city Barcelona. It served as a Roman forum 2000 years ago, and to this day serves as the center of laws for the region, with the Palace of the Generalitat of Catalonia and the City Hall on either side.

Castellers (Human castle)

Monument to the Castellers

Human castles are the most well known Catalan sport. Groups work together to build the tallest human tower. The small child on the top of the tower needs to show four fingers, for four red stripes on the Catalan flag.

The main Castellers event takes place on September 24th, with teams from around the region competing to have the tallest and best built tower.

To Catalonia, this sport represents themselves. It stands for solidarity of the region. There are many people holding up the few on top, along with the youngest member of the group on top.

Carrer Avinyó

The Carrer Avinyó is one of the oldest streets in the center of Barcelona. During the 19th century it was the center of the Bohemian lifestyle within the city. It is now home to many boutiques and great cafes and restaurants.

Pablo Picasso’s father taught at the School of Fine Arts that used to be open there. The arts school building now sits unused, until there is money for the city to pay for renovations. This street is where Picasso was truly influenced.

Carrer de la Mercè

Carrer de la Mercè  3 was home to the  Picasso family from 1896 to 1904. The street used to be highlight of bar and tapas in the city, but has declined in recent years.

Nearby is La Tasca del Corral, known for its custom vermouth. We were told to ask for the  Alvi special (The name of our tour guide), he didn’t say what it was though.

What you will see in the Free Gaudi and Modernism Tour:

The second free walking tour we took was about the influence of Gaudi and the modernism movement on the city of Barcelona. The tour also starts at the steps of the Gothic Cathedral at 2:30PM daily.

To read more about Antoni Gaudi, check out our  8 must see Gaudi buildings in Barcelona post.

4cats Restaurant

4cats Restaurant has operated in one way or another since 1897. It became the meeting place for the artists at the center of modernism. The building itself also exemplifies modernist architecture.

On modernist buildings the underside of the balconies are covered in tiles. The more colorful the tiles are, the richer the owner was. Also, the building always had dragons incorporated somewhere.

Palau de la Música Catalana

The Catalan Music Palace was built as a landmark in the cultural and social life of Catalonia finished in 1908. The stained glass ceiling entirely illuminates the entire theatre by daylight. Therefor shows had traditionally taken place in the afternoon.

The building is covered in many mosaics inside and out.

Our tour guide said that the narrow streets around the music hall are home to many good food joints.

Passeig de Gracia

Passeig de Gracia is described as the Champs de Lycee of Barcelona. It is now home to many global upscale business and expensive properties. The Art Nouveau style benches that line the street were originally heated with coal in the winters, like an oven.

Along the street there is a block with three houses in a row by different famous modernist architects.

  • Casa Lleó-Morera by Lluís Domènech i Montaner
  • Casa Mulleras by Enric Sagnier
  • Casa Amatller by Josep Puig i Cadafalch
  • Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudí

Casa de les Punxes

This large Gothic castle is a beautiful building on the outside. It is a private non-profit building, so you must enjoy this one from the outside!

La Sagrada Familia

The last stop on the walking tour was at Gaudi’s most famous work, La Sagrada Familia church . For our complete review of this architectural masterpiece, check out our Gaudi guide .

Backpacker Night Out

For evening fun, Generation Tours also hosts a Generations Night Out pubcrawl. The night began at GaelicBCN, a small bar, with one tapas and beer or sangria.

The event cost €15/person, but if you pre-order the tickets at the end of the walking tour, you get an additional drink and tapas.

We then took the metro to a small bar near the water. It was a quieter bar, to talk to the others in the group for an hour or so. You get a free shot in the way in and out.

We walked to a more happening bar, where we made a quick stop for another free shot.

Our night, we ended at the  Shoko Barcelona nightclub. The one downside of this club from our experience is the bathroom. Even by 1am, relatively early for nightlife in Spain, the bathroom was not a pretty sight.

Regular entry to Shoko is €12 for 1 drink, €18 for 2, and €24 for 3. So, if you would like to end your night at the club, going on this pubcrawl is totally worth it.

Other than that, I would suggest this pubcrawl if you are looking for an adventure out at night, but do not have any friends in Barcelona to do it with. If you have your own group, go out on your own, set your own pace and have fun!
