In keeping with the theme of revolution, Linkin Park is teaming with Live Nation and giving back to their fans by picking up the tab for the service fees normally tacked onto concert ticket prices. This precedent-setting no-service-charge limited time offer is available for artist fan club members anxious to purchase tickets to the upcoming tour. Beginning at 10AM on April 4th, fans can take advantage of Linkin Park’s special offer to cover the cost of extra fees by pre-ordering tickets at http://www.lpunderground.com/ or http://www.livenation.com/ . Tickets for select dates go on sale nationally beginning April 11th — go to http://www.linkinpark.com/ or http://www.livenation.com/ for show dates and on-sale information in each area.

“As a thank you to our fan club, we’re picking up part of the tab for their tickets to this summer’s Projekt Revolution,” says Linkin Park co-frontman Mike Shinoda. “We’ll be paying the service charge on fanclub pre-sale tickets, which will save each fan roughly $8-11. Our fan club has been incredibly loyal and supportive, and we hope this gesture lets them know how much we appreciate them.”

In addition, Linkin Park is once again offering their fans the option of purchasing the Digital Souvenir Package, a groundbreaking promotion that provides concert-goers with a special post-gig memento: a live audio download and exclusive concert photos of that night’s performance by Linkin Park, as well as a digital tour program. In short, it provides a live experience that concertgoers will never forget.

Produced by Live Nation and partnered with Major League Baseball, Monster Energy Drink, Verizon Wireless and Nowwhat.com, Projekt Revolution 2008 sees Linkin Park building upon the success and excitement of previous Revolution tours, which included artists such as My Chemical Romance, Korn, Snoop Dogg, HIM, Xzibit and Mudvayne, among others.

“We started Projekt Revolution six years ago and have been lucky to have toured with some great bands,” says Linkin Park co-frontman Chester Bennington. “This year, however, might just be the best lineup yet. We’re looking forward to taking this show on the road and bringing great music to the masses.”

Last month Linkin Park took a break from their headlining tour in support of new album MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT and traveled to New Orleans to help families displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The band joined volunteers from Music for Relief, and Habitat homeowner families from New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity to build homes in the damaged Gulf Coast area. Prior to that, Linkin Park’s nonprofit organization, Music For Relief, initiated a partnership with Hollywood for Habitat For Humanity to fund and build homes in hurricane ravaged areas. Additionally, Linkin Park recently donated $1 from each ticket sold on their European & UK, U.S. & Canadian headlining dates to Music for Relief for a tree-planting initiative.

With Projekt Revolution 2008, Linkin Park continues to give back, as $1 from every ticket sold will go toward Music for Relief to support disaster relief and reduce global warming. In just over a year Music For Relief has raised over $1 million for reforestation, planting over 797,000 trees. Music For Relief endeavors to help victims recover and rebuild following natural disasters but also works to reduce global warming. During Projekt Revolution 2008, Music for Relief will continue its grassroots outreach to fans to educate them on how to reduce their own carbon emissions and how those changes can have a global effect.

Linkin Park (Bennington, drummer Rob Bourdon, guitarist Brad Delson, DJ Joe Hahn bassist Dave “Phoenix” Farrell and vocalist Mike Shinoda) is touring in support of double-platinum-selling album MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT and new hit single “Given Up.” The album, one of the highest-debuting discs of 2007 and the seventh best-selling album of the year, has already spawned three top ten hits (“Bleed It Out,” “What’s I’ve Done,” “Shadow of the Day”), amplifying an already illustrious career. Since arriving in 2000, Linkin Park has won two Grammy Awards (Best Hard Rock Performance in 2002 with their hit single “Crawling” and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration with Jay-Z in 2006 for the innovative “Numb/Encore”), sold more than 45 million albums worldwide (their Diamond-Certified debut Hybrid Theory has sold more than 18 million copies alone), and garnered an international fanbase whose members number in the millions.

Ranked 12th in MTV’s “22 Greatest Voices in Music” survey, ahead of such icons as David Bowie, Steven Tyler and Bruce Springsteen, Chris Cornell has been called “the single most dynamic rock and roll force produced by the Grunge Revolution of the early 90s.” As the frontman for Soundgarden, he marshaled five studio albums including the groundbreaking Superunknown, which went multi-platinum and earned two Grammy Awards. His songwriting continued to develop with the critically acclaimed side project, Temple of the Dog, a collective of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden members who formed in tribute to late Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood. During his tenure as frontman for the rock supergroup Audioslave, he continued his multi-platinum success and produced hit singles “Like a Stone,” “Cochise” and “Be Yourself.” Cornell’s songs have been featured on film soundtracks including Pump Up the Volume, Wayne’s World, True Romance, Feeling Minnesota (a title taken from one of Cornell’s own Soundgarden lyrics), Singles, Great Expectations, Mission: Impossible II, Collateral and BUG. Cornell’s second solo album, CARRY ON (Suretone/Interscope), marks his 13th studio album and was released in June 2007. Carry On includes the 2008 Grammy nominated “You Know My Name,” the theme song from the last James Bond installment, Casino Royale (Columbia Pictures). Cornell was honored to be the first American male in history to create a theme song for the classic James Bond film franchise. Cornell is currently in the studio with super-producer Timbaland working on his third solo album. In addition to his work in the music world, Chris Cornell served as the face of the 2006 John Varvatos ad campaign and became a restaurateur with the opening of Black Calavados (BC) in Paris, where he lives with his wife Vicky and two young children.

The Bravery — singer/guitarist and songwriter Sam Endicott, guitarist Michael Zakarin, bassist Michael Berreto Hindert, keyboardist John Conway, and drummer Anthony Burulcich just re-launched their highly lauded album, THE SUN AND THE MOON COMPLETE, as part of a two-disc configuration. Disc one (THE SUN) is the original 12-song album issued last May. The album was produced and mixed by two-time Grammy Award winner Brendan O’Brien. Disc two (THE MOON) is the album reimagined/reworked by the New York-based Bravery, who were recently named Artist of the Week on MTV’s 52/52. The album features Top 10 Modern Rock hit “Believe,” whose video was recently added to MTV, MTV2, VH1 and Fuse, following its premiere on Yahoo! “Believe” has been featured on a plethora of television shows, including “The Hills,” “Friday Night Lights,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Gossip Girl,” “Moonlight,” “Las Vegas,” “Rescue Me” and “Reaper.” The song has also been heard on two new video games “Madden ’08” and “Game With Fame,” and is receiving additional exposure in the current Pontiac and Gap advertising campaigns.

ASHES dIVIDE

ASHES dIVIDE is the new band formed by lead guitarist/singer-songwriter Billy Howerdel-founder/producer of multi-platinum group A Perfect Circle, the band he led with Tool frontman Maynard Keenan through three albums (two platinum and one gold). Three weeks before the April 8th release of Howerdel’s long-awaited first solo project, KEEP TELLING MYSELF IT’S ALRIGHT, lead single “The Stone” was the No. 1 Most Streamed Song at both the Alternative and Rock formats of Clear Channel Online New and its video has been added at both Fuse and MTV2. In a recent Entertainment Weekly poll of film and television music producers, Dana Sano (Dan In Real Life) praised ASHES dIVIDE for sounding” … so very dreamy rock with a ’90s feel.” Howerdel produced and engineered the new album in Los Angeles, playing guitar, bass and keyboard. Longtime collaborator Danny Lohner (APC, Nine Inch Nails) helped out with the recording process, while drummer Josh Freese (APC) appears on the album. Other contributors include Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde), Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio), and Paz Lenchantin. Innovative Brit producer Alan Moulder, known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, My Bloody Valentine and the Killers, mixed the album in London.

The Orange County, CA-based hard rockers are touring in support of LEAD SAILS PAPER ANCHOR, which debuted at No. 8 on Billboard’s Top 200, making it both the highest debut and highest-charting album of the band’s career. It follows 2006’s A Death-Grip On Yesterday, which entered the chart at No. 9. The album, produced by John Feldmann (The Used, Good Charlotte) and mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Slipknot, Linkin Park), drew rave reviews from around the world, including Metal Hammer, who declared it to be “a truly landmark album.” Kerrang! gave the record 4 K’s and Blender gave it 3 1/2 stars and called it “metal that takes you to a magical bygone era.” Revolver awarded the album 4 stars and praised it for flowing “beautifully through the speakers” and for being “a coffin-tight collection of singles.” Since the album’s release, the band shared stages alongside Korn and Evanescence on the Family Values Tour and blazed a headlining run of their own. They’re currently co-headlining the Rockstar Taste of Chaos Tour with Avenged Sevenfold. Their new hit single, “Falling Down,” is currently No. 3 on Billboard’s Alternative Rock Chart.

10 Years recently put the finishing touches on new album DIVISION, readying it for a nationwide in-store release on May 13th. DIVISION was helmed by acclaimed producer Rick Parasher (Pearl Jam, Nickelback, Soundgarden. Rob Zombie). Recorded during what the band has described as “an intense creative process” this past summer, songs on DIVISION include “Just Can’t Win,” “In Your Eyes,” “Day Dreamer,” and the band’s latest radio hit, “Beautiful.” 10 Years came to the attention of the rock world with 2005’s Autumn Effect which unleashed one of 2005-2006’s biggest rock radio hits with the mythic single “Wasteland.” The iconic song not only set career highs for the band when it was certified gold, it reigned on US rock charts for more than a year, notching the #4 year-end spot on the Active rock chart, and eventually pulled off a hat-trick of #1 slots at Active rock, Alternative rock and Billboard’s Modern rock chart. The album also spawned a second hit single for the band, “Through The Iris.”

Hawthorne Heights (vocalist/guitarist JT Woodruff, drummer Eron Bucciarelli, guitarist Micah Carli and bassist Matt Ridenour) will be supporting the follow-up album to 2006’s gold-selling IF ONLY YOU WERE LONELY, which is slated for release early summer ’08. Hawthorne Heights broke onto the scene in 2004, selling a staggering one million copies of their debut release The Silence In Black And White, which featured cult hits “Ohio Is For Lovers” and “Niki FM.” Since that time the band has toured relentlessly, developing a rabid fanbase and selling nearly 2 million albums worldwide. Projekt Revolution marks the bands triumphant return after a tumultuous year of setbacks and great personal loss.

The New Jersey-based post-hardcore quartet has been busy promoting their recent release SMILE FOR THEM, a compelling third addition to their ever-evolving catalogue of music. The band formed in the suburban utopia of northern NJ in 2002, catalyzed by singer/guitarist Ben Jorgensen’s songwriting and desire to form a band centered around it. The release of the group’s debut, Dream To Make Believe, in 2003 on independent label Equal Vision Records, thrust them on tour where receptive listeners were attracted to the genuine, personable sensibility of the band and their music. But 2005’s critically acclaimed concept-based follow-up, What To Do When You Are Dead, set them far apart from the other bands swimming in the deep sea of emo bands, and put them distinctly on the top of the bubbling genre. Selling over 220,000 records to date, the album solidified the bond between band and fan, and eventually piqued the interest of Sire Records who signed them in 2006. Having played shows with the likes of Against Me!, Taking Back Sunday, All-American Rejects and Underoath, the band is ready to join this year’s Projekt Revolution.

Known for their high-energy percussion shows, which Kevin Lyman (founder of the Vans Warped Tour) calls a “Punk Rock Stomp,” Street Drum Corps bring an unparalleled dynamic element to an evening’s event. Bobby Alt, Adam Alt, and Frank Zummo formed Street Drum Corps in Los Angeles in 2004. They use found and traditional instruments. SDC has been touring the world the past four years. Tour highlights include: Vans Warped Tour, SXSW, Coachella, Matisyahu, Australian Tour, MTV $2 Bill Tour with 30 Seconds To Mars, Six Flags Magic Mountain, The Used, Guitar Center Drum Off and Taste Of Chaos. SDC was recently inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame’s “Warped Tour Exhibit.” They also performed on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and Fuse TV.

Now in its sixth year, “Access To The Show” is a summer festival tour featuring the MLB Road Show, a high-tech tractor-trailer that’s completely outfitted to give fans a chance to have an all-encompassing baseball experience. The truck includes pitching and batting cages, kiosks featuring the latest MLB video games, and showcases the MLB Authentic Collection line of apparel, which includes the jerseys, headwear and outerwear that are identical to what is worn by players on all 30 clubs. The MLB Road Show will be returning to Projekt Revolution as the sole professional sports league sponsor, and will receive exclusive branding rights for the MLB Authentic Collection as well as Second Stage sponsorship, bringing together music and baseball in a unique and exciting festival environment. Over the years “Access To The Show” has become a major part of the summer festival experience for music fans everywhere, having been along for the ride with festivals and tours such as SXSW, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Vans Warped Tour, Lollapalooza, Sasquatch Music Festival, Projekt Revolution, Virgin Festival, Langerado, and many more.

Projekt Revolution's Origins:

Projekt Revolution is a summer tour organized by the rap-rock band Linkin Park that began in 2002. Working under the mandate of bringing the worlds of rock and hip-hop together for one concert series, Projekt Revolution started small, encompassing only four bands, but has since evolved into a larger event that now tours both the United States and Europe. Linkin Park are the one constant for each tour, with other acts over the years including Jay-Z , Cypress Hill, Korn , Snoop Dogg , Chris Cornell and 10 Years.

The First Tour (2002):

When Projekt Revolution kicked off its inaugural U.S. tour in 2002, the lineup consisted of Linkin Park, Cypress Hill, DJ Z-Trip and Adema, a healthy mix of hard rock and rap groups, with both Cypress Hill and Linkin Park demonstrating their ability to bridge the two genres. Unlike subsequent tours, the first Projekt Revolution took place in the winter, running from January through the end of February.

Projekt Revolution Gets Ill ... Literally (2003):

The following year’s tour was planned to run through the month of April, but organizers had to reschedule some dates, including its opening night in Rochester, New York, when Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington suffered a throat infection. As a result, three shows were moved to July. Because of the rescheduled dates, there were different groups that performed for each section of Projekt Revolution 2003, including Mudvayne, Xzibit and Jurassic 5. The 2003 tour played fewer cities, focusing less on the West Coast and more on the East Coast and Midwest.

The Tour Adds a Second Stage (2004):

Projekt Revolution 2004 saw the addition of the Revolution Stage, a second stage that featured niche rock and hip-hop acts. Since 2004, the tour has included both stages, allowing for a larger and more diverse list of artists to perform. That year’s edition also began the tradition of touring during the lucrative summer months, and with over 30 dates in the U.S., it was also the longest tour in Projekt Revolution’s history to that point. The Main Stage consisted of Linkin Park, Korn, Snoop Dogg, the Used and Less Than Jake. The Revolution Stage featured, among others, Ghostface Killah and Funeral for a Friend.

Hiatus (2005-2006):

With the tour gaining in size and stature, it was perhaps surprising that no subsequent Projekt Revolution festivals occurred in 2005 and 2006. The absence can be attributed to the members of Linkin Park concentrating on side projects, such as singer Mike Shinoda’s one-man group Fort Minor. Additionally, the band reconvened in the studio in 2006 to record their third album, Minutes to Midnight , with touring taking a backseat to completing the CD.

Projekt Revolution Returns ... Without the Rap (2007):

A week before Minutes to Midnight was released in May 2007, Linkin Park announced the relaunch of Projekt Revolution. Starting at the end of July and running until early September, Projekt Revolution 2007 focused heavily on metal and alternative rock, offering only one hip-hop act, the little-known Styles of Beyond, on the Revolution Stage. Meanwhile, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday and other rock bands dominated the Main Stage. This shift in musical priorities brought criticism from some, who accused Projekt Revolution of abandoning its original mission of catering to both rock and rap audiences.

Expanding to Europe (2008):

Projekt Revolution 2007 also marked the festival’s first trip to Canada, setting the stage for next year’s more global ambitions. For the 2008 tour, Linkin Park announced that the festival would do four European dates in June that would cover Germany and the United Kingdom. Inviting Jay-Z and N.E.R.D. to participate helped restore the show’s balance between rock and hip-hop groups, although the subsequent American dates continued to lean toward hard rock, including sets from Chris Cornell, Atreyu, Ashes Divide and 10 Years.

Shortest Tour to Date (2011):

After 2008 Projekt Revolution went on hiatus until June 2011 when a four date tour was held only in Europe with one date in Finland and three dates in Germany. The bands Anberlin , Dreng, Middle Class Rut, Guano Apes, and Die Antwoord opened for Linkin Park in different arrangements for these shows. Since 2011 Project Revolution has put been on hiatus. In 2012 Linkin Park and Incubus performed as co-headliners for the Honda Civic tour. In 2014 Linkin Park and 30 Seconds to Mars co-headlined the Carnivores tour. Linkin Park has headlined world tours from 2009 to 2015 with various opening acts.

Linkin Park Tell How Busta Rhymes Invited Himself Along For Projekt Revolution 2008

projekt revolution tour 2008

Linkin Park weren't sure they'd be able to top [article id="1559005"]last year's Projekt Revolution tour[/article], but with a lineup that includes veteran rap and rock performers Busta Rhymes and Chris Cornell, as well as the Bravery and Ashes Divide, this year's bill may prove to be their most eclectic yet.

"We just pick groups that we think would be a good match together," Linkin Park MC Mike Shinoda said of the tour, which will hit 24 cities, kicking off July 16 in Mansfield, Massachusetts, and wrapping up August 24 in The Woodlands, Texas. "We want to create a bill that we think we'd enjoy seeing this summer."

After [article id="1586709"]collaborating with Linkin Park on "We Made It,"[/article] the first single off his eighth album, Blessed, Busta Rhymes was determined to join them on tour.

"Apparently, Busta was telling people, 'You don't understand, I'm going to be on that tour; you need to get me on that tour,' " Shinoda recalled. "I was saying to our touring committee ... with the single, it would be really great to do at least some shows with Busta."

Rhymes laughed at his efforts. "I was going hard, though, shamelessly," he said. "I wanted this bad."

"Busta, he's a performer," Shinoda said. "This isn't a DJ on the stage playing records."

With Rhymes and Linkin Park spending so much time together on the tour, are other collaborations on the horizon? "Absolutely. Why not?" Rhymes said. "Make an album, a couple of albums. Make a movie together. You know what I'm saying?"

Cornell decided to join the tour after enjoying his brief time with Linkin Park in Australia last October. "It's not that easy to find bands or artists [that are musically] different from what you do but that you like and your fans are going to like them, and it all makes sense but it's completely different," Cornell explained.

The former Audioslave and Soundgarden frontman described his spontaneous approach to creating a set list. "I sort of decide on the moment what the set list will be and sometimes even when we're onstage -- it depends," Cornell said. "The funny part is when I'll forget. There will be a song that everybody loves that everyone expected to hear, and I forgot that song existed."

Cornell may also be debuting material from his recent collaboration with chart-topper Timbaland, who is producing Cornell's third solo album, which is planned for a September release.

"The idea of playing some new material is good," Cornell said. "Not every day is the same for me. Sometimes an audience feels different, so for me it requires a couple of different songs. You never know."

Metal band Atreyu will headline the tour's smaller Revolution stage, where 10 Years, Hawthorne Heights, Armor for Sleep and Street Drum Corps will also play.

"We just kept sending manila envelopes full of $1 bills," Atreyu lead singer Alex Varkatzas joked of how they made the lineup.

Before the U.S. leg of the tour begins, Projekt Revolution will head to Europe for the first time in the tour's five-year history, with a completely different lineup that includes N.E.R.D., the Used, H.I.M., the Blackout, InnerPartySystem and Enter Shikari. After three stops in Germany (June 21, 27, 28), the tour meets up with Jay-Z in Milton Keynes, England, on June 29.

"For some reason, there's an interest in this tour, there's an interest in what it means, and I think that it's translating in other places," Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington said. "We've never showed up to the U.K. and sold 50,000 tickets, but when we say we're doing Projekt Revolution and we have these different bands, all of a sudden it's, like, awesome."

One thing that hasn't changed since last year is Linkin Park's commitment to making the tour "green" by donating $1 from every ticket purchased to help reduce global warming through their charity, Music Relief.

Even after five years of putting this tour together, Linkin Park are excited to hit the road again. "When all the musicians on a tour feel like this is really an opportunity, and we're probably not going to be able to do this again, you're living in that moment, and you're being present with the fact that this is a really special thing we get to do," Bennington said. "It's just like I'm living out a fantasy."

Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell on Projekt Revolution

By Steve Baltin

Steve Baltin

On the eve of the launch of the fifth Projekt Revolution — the multi-genre tour founded by Linkin Park in 2002 — Rolling Stone checked in with two of its acts, LP’s Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell . The pair of famous frontmen chatted about the greatest rock singers and classic Lollapalooza fests.

How does being around all these different artists on the Projekt Revolution tour inspire you? Chris Cornell : Being on tour can sometimes be less complicated than being at home because your day is regimented. You wake up in the morning, you warm up, you do a soundcheck, you play your show, you sleep or get on the bus — every single day is like that. There’s someone putting a sheet of paper under your door telling you what time you’re gonna do what. But a festival tour like this is very different. It’s much less predictable and a lot of different things can happen. And seeing other bands perform for me changes my whole mood in terms of what I end up bringing onstage. I’ve often watched live performance footage from any band before I go onstage just ’cause it gets me in that mindset.

Chester Bennington : What I like about doing a touring festival, especially Projekt Rev, is the fact these are bands that I can get really excited about since I’m part of the reason they’re there. For me, last Projekt Revolution was probably the best touring experience I’ve ever had. For me to be able to bring out Mindless Self Indulgence — a band that I’ve always liked and I’ve felt that they’ve never really gotten the love that they deserve — to see them show up and play with another band like Saosin and 5,000 kids are showing up at noon, just like, “Yes, it’s happening.” And I felt really proud that they got to do that and that Gerard [Way, of My Chemical Romance] and Lyn-Z [Mindless Self Indulgence bassist Lindsey Ballato] reignited their friendship and then ended up getting married backstage on the last show. I was like, “This is freaking awesome.” When we did Ozzfest I couldn’t go to the main stage because I had the wrong pass. I felt like I was segregated from everybody else. The main stage guys were in their superstar land and it was just like, “I don’t feel comfortable here.” Everyone needs to feel respected and everyone needs to be able to go wherever they wanna go and do whatever they wanna do.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Chris, going back to what you said, how does seeing live music affect the way you approach playing? Cornell : Energy and enthusiasm, those are the things that I’m talking about. To stand up in front of thousands of people and perform whatever way it is, whether it’s in a rock band or a string quartet, it’s an intense thing to do. As soon as I see it, it’s like I immediately absorb it. The other way to do it is sit in a room by yourself and then you go out and suddenly stand in front of a bunch of people for the first time. At Lollapalooza ’92 I would go into the pit, put my hair in a hat, and watch Ministry and try to see if I could jump over the security guards and stage dive and really get into being a fan. Bennington : That was a great tour [ laughs ]. Cornell : That was also very diverse and seeing all those bands in one day I could see it sort of changing everybody. But the enthusiasm, the passion for doing it is what I connect with immediately just by seeing it happening in front of me. When we toured Australia, Chester broke his wrist on like, the third song and then finished the whole set with a broken wrist. That kind of dedication and passion, like, “This is what I’m doing, this is the most important thing there is, I’m onstage right now.” That affects me.

Cheech & chong return for one 'last movie', micah nelson on joining neil young and crazy horse: 'i've been rehearsing for this my whole life', olivia rodrigo will spill more 'guts' on new deluxe edition.

You guys are regarded as two of the greatest voices in rock. How much will you be watching what the other is doing onstage? Bennington : For me, I’m such a fan I think that’s the most important aspect of why I do what I do and how I do it. I’ve got to play with a lot of guys that I’ve grown up loving; I get to sing on stage with Chris Cornell, I got to play with Metallica and Black Sabbath, and I’ve performed songs with Jane’s Addiction, members of Guns n’ Roses, did the Doors 40th anniversary with the Doors and Perry Farrell onstage — I’m just like, “What world do I live in, ’cause this can’t be real?” And I love watching other guys play and I love being pushed mentally to try to do my best. It made me really uncomfortable when Donovan Leitch [at a Camp Freddy show], said [I have] “The best voice in rock & roll.” I was just like, “Ugh,” and Steven Tyler walks onstage and in my opinion he has one of the best voices ever. Cornell : Yeah, there’s no quantifying. It’s weird to even think that way. I’m sure the best singer in the world, nobody knows who that is. He’s somewhere, or she’s somewhere, and they’re out there. I get blown away by singers all the time and almost feel embarrassed that I would be referred to or regarded as one of the best singers in rock ever.

Chester Bennington, Linkin Park Singer, Dead at 41

What’s one of the best shows you’ve ever seen? Bennington : I’ll never forget this show, I saw Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers, in my opinion, all on their best records. You had Pearl Jam out with Ten — the band was great, they’ve got two of the shreddingest guitar players alive, and they were just killing it. And then Nirvana came out, and it was so different, so new and so fresh, it felt like when I discovered Jane’s Addiction. I felt like the Chili Peppers didn’t say, “Okay, you guys can’t blow things up because we’re gonna blow things up. And just have Pearl Jam do basic lights.” Everybody got to do what they wanted to do and I think that, for me, was the reason why it was so special. No one freaked out when Eddie Vedder ran across the arena and was climbing up the wall and singing while swinging from the lighting fixtures over his band. I was like, “He’s gonna fucking kill everybody.” But it was really great. And then for Kurt Cobain to come out and destroy his set and to feel that pure raw passion and then the Chili Peppers are one of the best bands ever. It was a really memorable thing and I remember being like, “I wanna do that. I want to be part of something like that.” And going back to Lollapalooza, there was Ice Cube, Ministry and you guys [Soundgarden], it was like, “What is happening right now ’cause this doesn’t normally happen?” And that kind of inspired me and I think it inspired all the guys in my band ’cause we were like, “How can we take all this stuff and put it in one thing? And how can we take all of our inspiration and all of our passion for all these other bands and bring that out on a tour?”

The band has sold over 40 million albums worldwide and has earned two GRAMMY® Awards, the first for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2002 with their hit single “Crawling” and the second for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration with Jay-Z in 2006 for the innovative “Numb/Encore.” Chris Cornell, one of the most influential artists in rock – from Soundgarden and Audioslave to his solo career – will perform this summer on the Main Stage of Linkin Park’s Projekt Revolution 2008 U.S. tour. In the mid-1980s, Cornell helped form Soundgarden and has come to be known as a rock icon who thrives on contradictions. An innovator who resists genre labels, he is the chief architect of grunge.
