10 Best Ski Resorts near Boston, 2023/24

Written by Barbara Radcliffe Rogers and Stillman Rogers Updated Jan 2, 2024

Skiers have the choice of eight different mountains where they can hit the snow within a two-hour drive of Boston , and two full-service ski resorts just a few minutes farther away. No other major metropolitan center in the east has as many choices of ski mountains. Skiing near Boston can be as close as half an hour from the city at Blue Hills; several others are an hour or less away.

The two-hour radius includes several resorts in southern and central New Hampshire, as well as those in Massachusetts, adding the advantage of a more snow-sure climate inland and farther north. Because of New England's topography, the nearer a mountain is to Boston, the lower the altitude and the shorter the runs.

The order in the rankings below is less important than the descriptions of the ski resorts, as there are two separate criteria: the distance from Boston and the resort's size and facilities. For some skiers, it's all about the most vertical and number of trails. For others, it's how fast they can get their family on the snow in the morning. For some, it is worth traveling a few more miles to have a greater variety of trails and terrain to choose from and more off-slope activities.

Whether you are looking for a nearby slope for a few runs after work (several of these have night skiing), a full day of long runs, or a weekend ski getaway, you'll find the right mountain with our list of the best ski resorts near Boston.

1. Mount Sunapee, New Hampshire

2. wachusett mountain, massachusetts, 3. gunstock mountain, new hampshire, 4. pats peak, new hampshire, 5. crotched mountain, 6. loon mountain, 7. waterville valley, new hampshire, 8. blue hills, massachusetts, 9. nashoba valley, massachusetts, 10. ski bradford, massachusetts, where to go cross-country skiing near boston, weston ski track, great brook ski touring center, map of ski resorts near boston, boston - climate chart.

Mount Sunapee

Mount Sunapee has the winning combination of 66 trails fanned across a 1,500-foot vertical drop and some of the best snowmaking and grooming in the east , adding to the 130-inch average annual snowfall. All this is less than two hours from Boston and close to Interstate-89.

High-speed quads whisk skiers to the summit in as little as four minutes, and a dedicated triple chairlift takes boarders to the Six O' Three Terrain Park, with 50 terrain features and a 4,000-watt sound system. Three other terrain parks offer different experiences.

Trails spread over more than 230 acres of terrain, with 32 for intermediates and the rest divided between beginners and experts. An entire area is designated a beginner slope , so more experienced skiers aren't whizzing past on their way to the lifts. The longest trail is a two-mile run. Nine glades and four mogul runs challenge experienced skiers.

Mount Sunapee is a member of the Epic Pass system, in common with Crotched Mountain and several northern New Hampshire ski resorts. To solve the overcrowding encountered last year, Vail is limiting daily ticket sales. To be sure of a ticket, reserve in advance.

Address: Route 103, Newbury, New Hampshire

Mount Wachusett

Wachusett Mountain is the closest ski mountain to Boston that has a serious vertical (1,000 feet). Not only is it just an hour away from the city, but you can get there by train and a dedicated bus that takes skiers right to the base lodge. Its 25 trails are divided evenly among experience levels and are served by eight lifts. The beginner terrain is in a separate area.

The two terrain parks have a variety of features: Frannie's Folly is a progression park for beginning and intermediate riders. Early birds love the 8am opening (9am on weekdays) and for skiers and riders with stamina enough — or for those who can get in a few runs after work — the trails are open until 10pm every night.

Wachusett Mountain has snowmaking on 100 percent of its terrain, and grooms the slopes and trails twice daily to keep conditions in top shape. Money-saving one-day packages for beginning skiers include lift tickets for Monadnock Quad and the Carpet Lifts, a 1.5-hour beginner group lesson, and rental of skis, boots and poles, or snowboard and boots. A three-day package (they don't need to be consecutive days) saves even more.

Along with a full selection of rental equipment (including snowshoes to use on the park's trails), Wachusett Mountain has a demonstration center in the base lodge featuring Southern New England's largest selection of demo ski equipment , with more than 100 pairs of skis, plus intermediate and advanced boots, snowboards, telemark skis, and backcountry AT skis.

Another highlight of Wachusett is that from the summit, you can see the Boston skyline . The ski train connection on weekends takes passengers from North Station on the Fitchburg Commuter Rail to Fitchburg, where a Wachusett Mountain bus meets the train.

Address: 499 Mountain Road, Princeton, Massachusetts

Gunstock Mountain

With only slightly less vertical than Sunapee and at the same distance from Boston (most of it by Interstate highway), Gunstock Mountain has fewer trails, but a more varied set of winter sports options for the whole family. These include a cross-country and snowshoe center with 32 miles of trails, a zipline, and New Hampshire's longest tubing hill . A Mountain Coaster operates on weekends and holidays.

Ninety percent of its 55 trails are covered by snowmaking, and 21 of the trails are lighted for night skiing Tuesday through Saturday . Although the mountain trails lean heavily to intermediate and expert, Gunstock pampers beginners at a dedicated area with its own chairlift, and a scenic green trail from the summit — a real treat for less experienced skiers who rarely get to ski from the top.

Terrain Parks: Gunstock's signature terrain park, Blundersmoke Park serves all levels of boarder, with predominantly small and medium features, but a few to challenge experienced rippers. Blundersmoke is the largest night park in New England. Side Arm is the progression park, with small features where all levels of riders can experiment with beginner-friendly elements such as small boxes and simple snow features.

The learning program is excellent, and the base area features a complete rental center and retail shop. A new rental building and tuning shop is under construction near the learning center, streamlining the rental process.

The view from the summit is spectacular , across the frozen expanse of Lake Winnipesaukee — New Hampshire's largest — to the mountains beyond. Gunstock offers a number of money-saving passes. Those and its laid-back, easy atmosphere have made Gunstock a family favorite for generations.

Address: 719 Cherry Valley Road (off Route 11-A), Gilford, New Hampshire

Pats Peak

Although Pat's Peak has less vertical than Wachusett Mountain, at 770 feet, its location inland and farther north gives it more dependable snow conditions . Interstate access — it's only a few minutes from I-89 — and a drive of only an hour and 20 minutes are added pluses for day skiers from Boston.

Fourteen novice trails and three beginner areas make it popular with families , but experts are happy here, too, with the nine glades and eight trails rated expert and advanced. One-fifth of the terrain is for intermediates, and the longest run is 8,000 feet. The energy-efficient snowmaking system covers 100 percent of the trails and slopes.

Night skiing is a specialty here, with 100 percent of the main mountain lighted; Pats Peak has the most lighted double-diamond terrain and glades in the region. Pats Peak also has a tubing hill .

The newly enlarged base lodge area houses the 9,600-square-foot Starting Gate Rental Shop, the largest rental shop in Northern New England , featuring Elan's most cutting-edge ski technology. Pats Peak has recently enlarged the terrace for more outdoor dining space, adding wind shields and an outdoor food pickup window.

Pat's Peak has invested in more lighting for night skiing this year. The East Wind trail has all new poles, wires, and LED lights for better visibility, at the same time cutting power consumption and minimizing the resort's carbon footprint.

The Boston ski bus is a real plus for skiers in the city, making two round trips a day on Saturdays, timed for morning/afternoon skiers and afternoon/evening skiers. The Pats Peak Shuttle is a door-to-door service, with reasonably priced tickets packaged with discounted lift tickets.

Address: 686 Flanders Road, Henniker, New Hampshire

Crotched Mountain

Ten minutes farther from Boston, and without Pats Peak's easy access from an Interstate highway, Crotched Mountain has about 250 more feet of vertical and almost as many trails as Pats Peak. All 25 trails are lighted for night skiing until 3am on Friday and Saturday nights. Expect a lively atmosphere, with music, bonfires, and deals for night skiers.

Crotched Mountain has a higher ratio of expert trails than most of the southern ski areas, with about one-third of its 25 trails designated for experts, the rest evenly split between intermediate and beginner. Snowmaking, grooming, and maintenance are up to the standards of Vail resorts, which Crotched Mountain has recently joined, bringing it into the Epic Pass system.

Three separate freestyle terrain parks are designed for riders at all levels of ability. The Little Dipper Park is for beginning riders, and the levels work up the progression chain to the CM Park, a favorite of pros. Riders and experienced skiers can also take to the forested glade areas. Beginners have a dedicated area of their own.

Crotched Mountain is a Vail Resort, so an EPIC Pass is valid here, but those without passes should reserve in advance to be sure of a ticket.

Address: 615 Francestown Road, Bennington, New Hampshire

Loon Mountain

Although in distance it is one of this list's two farthest ski mountains from Boston, Loon Mountain is less than 10 minutes from Interstate 93 and has lodging at the base; you can ski right from the door to the lifts. With more than 60 trails spread across three peaks and 2,100 feet of vertical drop , much of it with a northern exposure, Loon has snow when the ski mountains closest to Boston don't.

Trails are varied for all skill levels, as are the terrain parks , designed for very young beginners, intermediate cruisers, and experts. New Hampshire's most powerful snowmaking system, with more than 650 high-efficiency snow guns, keeps them in top condition when nature doesn't cooperate.

Ride to the top of the mountain on the Loon Gondola or on the East's first eight-place chairlift , with ergonomically heated seats, weather-blocking tinted bubbles, and an adjustable loading carpet. Last year's opening of the new Seven Brothers Express Quad, a detachable Doppelmayr chairlift, increased capacity to that terrain to 2,400 skiers an hour.

The expansion of the South Peak this season adds 11 trails and a quad chairlift, bringing the skiable terrain to more than 400 acres. The 30 acres of new terrain features two areas for tree-skiing that are rated for beginner and intermediate skiers. More than half of the newly added terrain is for beginners , increasing the resort's appeal for families.

Address: 60 Loon Mountain Road, Lincoln, New Hampshire

Waterville Valley

The same driving time from Boston as Loon Mountain, Waterville Valley Resort is about 20 minutes from Interstate 93 and shares with Loon the distinction of being the closest full-service resort to Boston . The self-contained resort is at the end of a road into the heart of the White Mountain National Forest, which surrounds the resort village .

It's not just the breadth of the resort facilities that merit Waterville's inclusion, the more than 2,000-foot vertical drop and 265 acres of skiable terrain are added plusses. Lift capacity has steadily improved, first with the addition of the White Peaks Express chairlift and a new T-bar with a capacity of 1,000 an hour, followed by The Green Peak six-pack, a high-speed bubble chairlift opened last season.

While Waterville excels at on-site activities and multiple winter sports options — a cross-country center, ice-skating, sleigh rides, dogsledding , and swimming pools as a start — that make it attractive to families, the mountain is short on beginner terrain.

Only 15 percent of the trails are green, intermediate accounts for 59 percent, and 23 percent is for advanced skiers. The south-facing slopes make it especially attractive in the coldest part of the winter, when it gets more sun than most mountains.

Free bus service between the village lodging and the slopes makes the 500-acre resort virtually car-free .

Address: Route 49, Waterville Valley, New Hampshire

Small, low-key, and kid-friendly, Blue Hills is the closest ski mountain to Boston , only a half-hour drive away. Its 635-foot elevation gives its 60 skiable acres a 309-foot vertical drop; the summit is reached by a chairlift, and the beginner area by three magic carpet lifts.

Ninety percent of the 16 trails are covered by snowmaking. Last year's investment more than doubled the snowmaking capacity with a new pump house and new snow guns, giving the mountain its longest season on record. Equipment rentals and lessons, along with the budget-friendly prices, make this a popular place for families with beginning skiers and snowboarders.

Lifts are open until 9pm on weeknights and 8pm on Saturday and Sunday. The 25-mile view from the top is dazzling at sunset or on a clear night when the lights of the city and seacoast are shining.

Address: 4001 Washington Street, Canton, Massachusetts

Nashoba Valley

The 240-foot vertical at Nashoba Valley may not offer a day's worth of skiing challenges for experts, but it is a perfect place to learn and for new skiers to take on their first blue trails. The terrain is good, snowmaking and grooming are excellent, and the 17 trails that web to 50-plus acres offer variety and a few challenges.

The learning program is especially good , with a Playground Park where younger kids and novices have space of their own. Ski instruction begins young, with the Kids'Club, pre-K multi-week 45-minute ski lessons for ages 3 and 4 that concentrate on balance and motor skills through games and outdoor activities. Meeting once a week for six consecutive weeks, the program requires a non-skiing adult to participate with each child. A similar program introduces children aged 5 and 6 to skiing.

Trails are lighted until 10pm daily . Nashoba has New England's largest snow tubing park , right next to the ski area, with 18 lanes served by four lifts.

Nashoba is a 45-minute drive from Boston.

Address: 79 Powers Road, Westford, Massachusetts

In Haverhill, 31 miles from Boston, Ski Bradford has 15 trails, a terrain park, and glades spread across its 60 skiable acres. The terrain is varied, so trails are well-divided between the skill levels. Even though the vertical drop is only 248 feet , making the runs fairly short, some of the trails are rated for experts, so there is something here for everyone.

The state-of-the-art terrain park includes jumps, rails, and boxes for various skill levels. The entire skiable area, including glades and terrain park, is lighted and covered by snowmaking.

The entire skiable area, including glades, is lighted and covered by snowmaking. The nine lifts include three triple chairs, so skiers are kept moving instead of standing in line. A carpet lift gets beginning skiers on the snow quickly. Ski and snowboard lessons are available for both children and adults, and there are equipment rentals at the base lodge.

With lighting for evening skiing, Bradford is open 65 hours a week.

Address: 60 S Cross Road, Haverhill, Massachusetts

Cross-country skier

Less expensive than downhill skiing — trails are free in some places — cross-country is a winter sport for all ages and skill levels. Most centers offer rental equipment, although to prevent crowding at the trailhead, some centers have suspended equipment rentals this year. If you do not own cross-country gear, be sure to contact the center to learn their policies.

In the winter, the Leo J. Martin Memorial Golf Course, beside the Charles River west of downtown Boston, becomes the Weston Ski Track, a cross-country center. Snowmaking supplements natural snowfall on 2.5 kilometers of the 17.5 kilometers of trails, and the trails in the snowmaking area are also lighted for night skiing. Trails are groomed for both skate and classical skiing, and the center offers lessons.

Address: 190 Park Rd, Weston, Massachusetts

In the Great Brook Farm State Park, about 25 miles from downtown Boston, Great Brook Ski Touring Center has more than 16 kilometers of machine-groomed trails through a landscape of forests and farmland marked by streams, ponds, and hills. This varied terrain assures trails for all skill levels, and machine grooming prepares both tracked and skating lanes.

This laid-back, family-friendly resort features 16 trails, 60 skiable acres, four lifts, a terrain park and a 309-foot vertical drop. A number of trails are lit up for night skiing, and the lifts run until 9pm on weekdays and 8pm on weekends, making it easy to hit the slopes regardless of your work schedule.

The tallest peak in Massachusetts east of the Connecticut River, Wachusett Mountain has the feel of a Vermont ski area . But it is just over an hour from downtown Boston in Princeton, Massachusetts. Accessible by the MBTA Ski Train, Wachusett has a 1,000-foot vertical drop, 114 skiable acres, eight lifts and 29 trails for all levels of skier. Snowmaking covers 100% of the terrain, ensuring solid coverage throughout the winter. And the fully-lit trails are open until 10pm every night but New Year’s Eve, when you can ski until midnight.

Yawgoo Valley

Open Wednesday through Saturday and boasting 36 acres of mostly gentle terrain, Yawgoo Valley sits less than an hour and a half from downtown Boston in Exeter, Rhode Island. Yawgoo is open for night skiing and has 100% snowmaking coverage. But the resort’s real claim to fame is being the only ski area in Rhode Island. If your goal is to ski in every state that has a ski area, Yawgoo is a must.

Crotched Mountain

Located just an hour and a half away near the town of Bennington, Crotched Mountain is the second-closest New Hampshire mountain to Boston (after Manchester’s tiny McIntyre Ski Area ). The resort has 100 acres of skiable terrain, but it feels much bigger, with a 1,000-foot vertical drop, 25 trails and four terrain parks. Snowmaking and lighting cover 100% of the terrain, ensuring good coverage and allowing for night skiing.

Mount

Mount Sunapee

Boasting the largest vertical drop in southern New Hampshire at 1,510 feet, Mount Sunapee , in Newbury, is the largest ski area within two hours of Boston. Owned by Vail Resorts and skiable on the Epic Pass , Sunapee has nine lifts, four terrain parks and 233 skiable acres. The resort’s 67 trails are best suited for beginner and intermediate skiers. Snowmaking covers 97% of the terrain, and the mountain offers great views of nearby Lake Sunapee.

An hour and a half from Boston in Henniker, New Hampshire, Pats Peak is a classic mom-and-pop operation. It has been owned by the same family since it opened in 1963. The resort’s 770 vertical feet and 28 trails feature some of the longest and steepest pitches in southern New Hampshire. But there are also three separate beginner areas with their own lifts for those who are new to the sport. With 100% snowmaking coverage, Pats can virtually guarantee excellent coverage. And the area’s three terrain parks cater to skiers and riders of all abilities.

Gunstock Mountain Resort

Overlooking the largest lake in New Hampshire in Gilford, Gunstock serves up big views along its slopes. Less than two hours from Boston, Gunstock features a 1,340-foot vertical drop, six lifts, 227 skiable acres and 48 trails, 21 of which are open for night skiing. The resort also has 22 acres of terrain parks, with features for all levels of skiers and riders.

Bretton Woods, NH

1.  Bretton Woods, NH

Located in the White Mountains National Forest, New Hampshire’s stunning Bretton Woods is a winter wonderland spread across more than 2,000 acres, at the base of the tallest peak in the Northeast, Mount Washington. You can take a canopy tour zipline, dine at the mountain top and, of course, glide down the slopes.

Woodstock, VT

2.  Woodstock, VT

Most New Englanders know this bucolic village from summer and fall visits, but they’re missing the beauty of the green covered in a deep snow. It’s the perfect setting for the annual Woodstock Snow Sculpture Festival, held every February. You can also browse Woodstock’s unique shops like FH Gillingham & Sons general store, or the Arts on the Green gallery. Enjoy farm to table dining at the Prince and the Pauper , or grab a pizza and a nice glass of wine at the Ransom Tavern .

Portsmouth, NH

3.  Portsmouth, NH

One of our favorite destinations in New England, Portsmouth has a thriving food scene, offers one-of-a-kind shopping, historic walking trails and a beautiful waterfront. Pick a dry day to walk around the shops, then hit Vida Cantina , owned by James Beard nominee David Vargas; or Toscana Italian Chophouse & Wine Bar for a warming bite. Earth Eagle Brewing ’s taproom is a more casual option, with gourmet burgers and dogs that are worth the trip.

Mystic, CT

4.  Mystic, CT

Scenic, historic Mystic is renowned for stellar attractions such as the Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport Museum . Once you make the 90-minute journey from Boston, you can make a day of it—but if you choose to stay over, try The Whaler’s Inn . Nestled just steps from the banks of the Mystic River and the Bascule Drawbridge, the Inn offers inspired dining at The Shipwright's Daughter . Of course, no visit to Mystic is complete without a meal at The Oyster Club , and a trip to try the award winning pizza at Nana’s Bakery is a must.

Salem, MA

5.  Salem, MA

  • Things to do

October may be the busiest time of year to visit Salem, but the city is just as fun in the winter. So you don't even need a car!

Newport, RI

The Maine coastline is always beautiful, but it’s even more stunning to see those mighty waves crash on a snowy afternoon. There’s lots to do too, like Kennebunkport’s annual Paint the Town Red event that stretches Valentine’s Day into a month-long celebration. Dock Square—the town’s unofficial center—is decked out in red twinkly lights, capped with an eight-foot glowing red heart created from lobster traps. Throughout the month, there are special pop-up dinners, mixology classes and wine tastings, many of them offering specials and deals.

8.  Westford, MA

Ski, board, tube and soak in the wintery scene at the Nashoba Valley Ski Area , just 25 miles west of Boston in quiet Westford. This family-owned resort has 18 beautifully groomed trails on 55 acres of terrain. The adjacent, separate tubing park has 18 lanes, making it New England’s largest such facility. It all comes to a splashy end in March with the Meltdown Pond Skim: ski into slush!

Newburyport

9.  Newburyport

Enjoy an off-season stroll through history in this seaport town, on a cool winter day. Start by visiting the Newburyport Historic District, which encompasses most of downtown, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and includes the Cushing House Museum & Garden and the Custom House Maritime Museum . Is Cape Cod worth the visit in the winter? If you like uncrowded beaches, hiking and getting creative with activities—plus, not sitting in summer traffic—then the answer is yes. Take the under two-hour drive to Dennis Port and head outside to cross-country ski, snowshoe or, if the ground is bare, just walk the Cape Cod Rail Trail for a breathtaking view of the seascape during the winter. Stop by the Pelham House Resort for brunch with an ocean view (without the crowds!) and reserve a private beach bonfire for the whole group with s’more kits and spiked, salted hot caramel cocoa to end your perfect day.

The Inn at Hastings Park

11.  The Inn at Hastings Park

On a Sunday morning finish the weekend with brunch just outside Boston. The Inn at Hastings Park is a historic hotel located a few miles outside Boston.  Offering brunch  on Sundays, this is just the place to escape the city and enjoy the Relais & Chateaux  atmosphere.

Old Saybrook, CT

12.  Old Saybrook, CT

Old Saybrook, a very un-touristy town on the coast, is eminently walkable and is  home to the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, or The Kate, which is named for the area’s most famous native. You can also explore Saybrook Point and Fort Saybrook Monument Park, and take in the quiet winter beauty of these protected coastal wetlands. Dine at the newly reopened The Essex , a local favorite that’s a Wine Spectator and Yankee Magazine award winner, or pop by the historic Monkey Farm for a more casual experience.

13.  North Adams, MA

North Adams is an old mill town by the Hoosic River that now attracts serious art- and nature-lovers from across the country, primarily due to the spectacular Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, better known as MASS MoCA . Hikers and folks looking for some fresh air head to Mount Greylock, Massachusetts’ highest peak, but bring your snowshoes or a sturdy vehicle in the winter. For Berkshire farms inspired eats, try the Break Room at Greylock Works for a menu that changes daily.

14.  Jackson, NH

If covered bridges iced with snow are your thing, you’ll get a treat heading into this  quiet valley town. Once there, head to the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation’s nonprofit cross country ski and snowshoe center. Considered some of the finest cross-country ski trails in the Eastern U.S., at the main lodge facility you’ll find a retail shop, rental shop and waxing area. There is a trail-warming hut, and ski lessons are available, along with snowshoe tours. After a strenuous day outdoors, dig into a charcuterie board and pan roasted farm sirloin at the Thompson House Eatery .

15.  Watch Hill, RI

Watch Hill in Rhode Island is another popular summer destination that is just as charming in the off season. And perhaps even more so due to the lack of crowds.  Swing by  Ocean House  and the Weekapaug Inn. Be sure to plan your visit so you can spend the afternoon at the  Weekapaug Inn  for lunch and then the evening for dinner at Ocean House.

16.  Westerly, RI

While visiting nearby Watch Hill, or as a stand-alone trip, sweet little Westerly is a decidedly non-touristy town with lots for visitors to do. Take a chilly stroll (or maybe not that chilly, based on the past few winters) on a stretch of Misquamicut State Beach, then head to downtown Westerly for fresh baked doughnuts at Knead , cocktails and oysters at High Hope Tavern and a modern Peruvian meal at Bar Pisco .

Provincetown

17.  Provincetown

With the ferry running into December, and Cape Air year round , there’s no better season than the holidays to visit sassy P-town. Take in the lobster pot “tree,” climb the 252-foot granite Pilgrim Monument for dramatic harbor views, dine year round on great seafood at Mac’s Fish House and enjoy strolling the peaceful streets.

18.  Brattleboro, VT

Brattleboro —a funky, artsy destination in the foothills of southern Vermont’s Green Mountains—is surrounded by wonderful hiking terrain, but you might also want to explore the town’s bohemian shops and farm-to-table eateries. Go vegan at the Superfresh! Organic Cafe, or head to the Chelsea Royal Diner, an original 1939 Worcester Lunch Car. In February, the annual Winter Carnival brings together the arts and entertainment communities for a weeklong jamboree. Visit the Vermont Jazz Center or one of the many artisan breweries. To learn about local history, stop into the Brattleboro Historical Society, which has a wonderful collection of memorabilia.

19.  Providence, RI

This easy to navigate city should be on your radar year round for a day trip. Put on your warmest winter coat and treat yourself to a dine-around through Federal Hill, the city’s impressive Italian neighborhood, loaded with Italian eateries and shops. Visit the Rhode Island School of Design’s museum , which includes one the country’s finest university art collections, and don’t miss celebrated Syrian bakery Aleppo Sweets .

Groton, MA

20.  Groton, MA

Head to this classic New England town and enjoy a brisk stroll around the Rocky Hill Wildlife Sanctuary , home to uninterrupted woodlands and ample solitude, and enjoy more than three miles of hiking trails while keeping an eye out for moose, beavers and porcupines, as well as nearly 100 species of birds. Other options include hiking Gibbet Hill Farm and exploring historic Bancroft Castle . If you’re visiting on a weekend, check to see if Puritan & Co.’s Will Gilson is cooking up dinner at his family farm, the Herb Lyceum .

Uncasville, CT

21.  Uncasville, CT

If you’re not feeling outdoorsy, plug into the nightlife at Mohegan Sun . The casino is essentially a giant indoor winter playground packed with restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. The gaming tables and slots are one option, but you can also catch a comedy or music act. In January, the annual Sun Wine and Food Fest adds three days of wine, beer, and spirits tasting, plus celebrity chef demonstrations.

Everett, MA

22.  Everett, MA

There’s one major reason to head to Everett, and that’s the relatively new Encore Boston Harbor Casino. Stay warm and cozy 24 hours a day while you hit the tables, or enjoy a relaxing massage in the resort's luxurious spa (which is offering winter skin saving treatments, like the Skin Replenishing Ritual, all season long). Sample new flavors at Cheese Meet Wine or bet on the Pats at Wynn BET Sports Bar .

SKI DAY TRIPS FROM BOSTON NORTH STATION

As far as mini vacations go, you’ll want to try these ski day trips from boston..

Dream of shredding fresh corduroy this winter? When you live at Hub50House , a day trip is easy. Hop on I-93 or a train from North Station for a quick ride to some of the region’s best ski resorts, including Nashoba Valley, Bradford, Gunstock, Waterville Valley, and more.

Ski day trips from Boston that will take you through the winter

It’s a classic.

Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford is Boston’s go-to resort — and Hub50House is ideally positioned to let you get there in no time.

Catch the Fitchburg Line at North Station ,  a Hub50House neighbor, for a less than an hour-long trip to Littleton. With an Uber waiting at your destination, you’ll arrive at Nashoba just minutes later.

To get there even faster, drive Route 2 and cruise into Nashoba after just 45 minutes on the road. This is the ideal place to sharpen your skills for bigger adventures north. Among ski day trips from Boston, this is a classic.

Après-ski activity: Sip a cocktail in The Living Room, the amenity space with floor-to-ceiling windows stretching an entire side of level 15 at Hub50House.

Stunning views up above

Trade in your city skyline views for beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee as you turn down Upper Gunsmoke, a winding blue run at Gunstock Mountain Resort in Gilford, N.H. Stunning views follow wherever you go on the mountain and make a trip up here a real treat.

Before you leave, our vote is on snow tubing and a few rides on the Mountain Coaster.  It’s hard to believe you’re only a two-hour drive up I-93 from Hub50House.

Late-night plans: Watch a movie in The Den on Hub15.

Prepping for the big run

New on skis? Ski Bradford in Haverhill will kick off your journey toward double black diamonds. If you’ve moved beyond the magic carpet phase, try the terrain park or zoom down Roger’s Chute, the resort’s sole black diamond.

How to get here? Pick up I-93 just by Hub50House and continue onto I-495 until you arrive at Bradford 45 minutes later. Another alternative is the Haverhill Line from North Station. Uber it the last few miles, and you’ll be on the chairlift just over an hour after leaving your Hub50House apartment.

Post-skiing happening: Join everyone in the Club Room at Hub38, the top-floor amenity spaces.

Peak awesome

Pats Peak is a highly rated ski resort in Henniker, N.H., that combines a bunch of leisurely green runs with trails fit for the experts.

I-93 is once again your highway of choice to get here unless you prefer to enlist a bus service like Go Sherpa , which picks you up right at Hub50House in a custom-built Mercedes-Benz van with HEPA air filters and Wi-Fi. Upon arrival, the van is transformed into a “Sherpa tent” that serves as a food hall, changing room, and storage valet at a time of Covid-19 restrictions.

Back-home relaxation: Retreat to a plush sofa with the Boston skyline shimmering in the background.

Into the forest

Drive two hours north on I-93 and reach the gateway to the White Mountains — the Waterville Valley Resort . With six lifts and 46 trails, this ski day trip from Boston gives you plenty to choose from.

If you need a break from ripping down the Sunnyside Trails, try the Nordic trail pass to access 70 kilometers of groomed and tracked trails for skating and classic skiing through the White Mountain National Forest. You’ll be back at Hub50House by nightfall.

Next-day must: Stretch out in The Gym with an eye out the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Which one is your favorite ski day trip from Boston? When you live at Hub50House, you won’t want to stay away for too long.

Best Ski Day Trips for Families Near Boston

boston ski day trips

December 17, 2019

There are few skills more challenging to teach kids than skiing—and that’s if you can get all the gear on them in the first place. The last thing you want to do is tack long distance travel and steep costs onto your very first ski outing with little ones. Luckily for Bostonians, there are terrific, affordable ski areas to visit this winter within a couple hours of the Hub. These five are our faves for families: all have instructional programs for young children, well-maintained trails, and kid-friendly fare for après ski. After a season or two frequenting one of these spots, you should be ready to venture farther north (though you may not even care to).

Within 30 minutes

Blue Hills, Canton, MA

Want to give tots a test drive on skis without sacrificing a whole day (or a lot of dough)? Blue Hills, just south of city limits, is where many Bostonians learn their first snowplows. Polar Cubs is a group program for four- to seven-year-olds available for 75 minute lessons, but you can also join a Snow Puppies program for a 3-week intensive for beginner ski or snowboarders. Blue Hills has also added a Little Otters 30-minute private session for three to four year olds!

Beginner/Intermediate Trails: 5 green, 4 blue

Dining options: 1 cafeteria (Blue Hills Cafe)

Childcare for pre-skiers?  No

Within 1 hour

Nashoba Valley Ski Area, Westford, MA

A step up from Blue Hills in terms of size and scope, Nashoba recently expanded its lesson area, adding a magic carpet, and they accept children as young as three into their Kids Club skiing program . Children interested in learning jumps and tricks can practice their skills at Nashoba’s terrain park, which has a variety of rails and jumps. And bonus: If anyone is skied out, you can hit Nashoba’s Snow Tubing Park, the state’s biggest with 18 lanes. (Keep in mind you must be 42 inches tall or 6 years old to snow tube.)

Beginner/Intermediate Trails: 4 green, 7 blue

Dining options: 1 restaurant ( The Outlook Restaurant )

Wachusett Mountain Ski Area, Westminster, MA

Wachusett Mountain 499 Mountain Road Princeton, MA

The first “big mountain” experience for many local kids, Wachusett boasts one of the largest ski schools in the state. Four- to eight-year-olds join the Polar Kids program, which includes a snack and supervised play period. Older kids (9-12) enjoy the Arctic Aces program, which includes turns on terrain-based teaching stations. Don’t miss a stop at the Bullock Lodge Cider House—built in the 1930s and now serving warm cider, doughnuts and other treats. The little stone house is a cozy pit stop in between Salamander Cutoff and Lower 10th Mountain trails.

Beginner/Intermediate runs:  5 green, 15 blue

Dining options: 9 restaurants/cafeterias/snack areas

Within 2 hours

Loon Mountain, Lincoln, NH

Loon Mountain 60 Loon Mountain Rd Lincoln, NH

A stone’s throw from I-93, Loon is a great choice for a family with a wide range of ages and interests. There are 61 trails spanning three separate peaks (the highest being 3,050 feet), a highly touted ski school (ages 3 and up), and—eek!—a 700-foot winter zipline spanning the Pemigewasset River (for kids 50-pounds or more). Loon also offers snow tubing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and an indoor climbing wall at the Loon Adventure Center. Nearby Lincoln offers movies and shopping for a fun evening after you’ve hit the slopes.

Beginner/Intermediate trails: 12 green, 29 blue

Dining options: 7 restaurants/cafeterias and 2 cafés

Childcare for pre-skiers?   Yes ; 6 weeks to 6 years

Mount Sunapee, Newbury, NH

Known for well-groomed trails as well as great views (and gourmet grilled cheese and a mac-and-cheese bar) at the summit, Sunapee also offers a lot of great deals for families. For example: Mother Goose Childcare is 50 percent off per child on Tuesdays, so you can ski and your kids can have their own fun.

Beginner/Intermediate trails: 17 green, 32 blue

Dining options: Three lodges, 1 pub and 1 deli & grill

Childcare for pre-skiers?   Yes ; 1 to 5 years

Boston: Home Of The Bean, Cod, And Nearby Skiing, Riding -

“Good old Boston, home of the bean and the cod …” so the toast starts.

It’s a world of its own compared with areas farther west and north, and northeast into Maine. Boston’s climate reflects the temperate effect of the Atlantic rather than the cold and snowy weather driving out of the Great Plains and central Canada that holds sway across the inland portions of New England.

Green yards in Boston often discourage city residents yearning to ski free, but seasoned skiers and riders know that the absence of winter in the back yard does reflect the state of affairs elsewhere across a region held in winter’s grip.

Blue Hills Ski Area is closest to the city, in Canton, at Blue Hills Reservation. It’s small but inexpensive. Nashoba Valley in Westford, Ski Ward in Shrewsbury, and Ski Bradford in Haverhill also are close and relatively inexpensive, though also small in size.

Wachusett Mountain Ski Area in Princeton, Mass., is the closest serious mountain – 1,000 feet of vertical, three separate trail systems and a novice slope, two high-speed detachable quads and a fixed-grip double, as well as three carpets and a surface tow, 100 percent snowmaking and grooming, modern lodge and rentals, and a full ski/snowboard school.

Further north is cult favorite Crotched Mountain in Bennington, N.H., with full snowmaking coverage from pole-mounted fan guns, and the ever popular Mount Sunapee in Newbury, N.H., overlooking Lake Sunapee, noted for deals that roll through the week, and for excellent snowmaking and grooming. Sunapee has a 1,510-foot vertical, and 65 trails. Both areas are within an hour and a half of Boston, given luck with traffic and weather.

Push the distance out a little more and options multiply: Gunstock in Gilford, N.H., overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee, Waterville Valley, and Loon Mountain are all within 2.5 hours drive of downtown. Gunstock has a 1,400-foot vertical and 51 trails.

Waterville and Loon are serious mountains. Loon has 2,100 feet of vertical and 55 trails, and is noted for its dedication to terrain parks which are spotted around the mountain. Waterville has 2,020 feet of vertical and 52 trails.

Applications for the 2023-24 Operation Snowsports season are now closed. Stay tuned for more information about trip dates!

Parents received an email from [email protected] on Wednesday, November 15th, 2023 with their assigned date to register for trips.

Operation SnowSports is YES’s flagship program. Every winter season, Boston youth have the opportunity to experience the outdoors, develop confidence on the slopes, and build leadership skills. COVID-19 policies and procedures will be followed per MA Department of Public Health guidelines.

The Downhill Ski & Snowboarding Program

boston ski day trips

The Downhill Ski & Snowboarding Program track gives skiers and snowboarders an opportunity to try something new, or continue practicing their skills on the slopes. This program is ideal for youth that have tried skiing/riding before, as well as youth who are new to the sport entirely. The Operation SnowSports YETTI and YES Kids experience begins with a virtual orientation where youth will learn safety tips for their day(s) on the slopes, followed by a trip to the YES rental shop for youth to be fitted for their gear. On the weekend day trips, youth arrive at YES to meet their instructor and classmates. Transportation is provided to/from the mountain. At the mountain, youth participate in a lesson, break for food, and continue with supervised skiing and snowboarding afterward. Through donations, fundraising events, and partnerships, YES keeps expenses to a minimum and provides programming that is affordable and accessible to everyone. In this way, YES encourages youth to not only learn and experience this new adventure and sport, but also to participate in other YES programs and develop lifelong relationships with mentors and peers.

Pricing: Program fee will be determined on a sliding scale based on household income and number of family dependents. Fees for income-eligible families can range from $15-$175.

The YETTI (Youth Excel Through Tailored Instruction) experience offers youth the opportunity to ski or snowboard with the same group of peers for four pre-determined days throughout the season. Youth benefit from the YETTI program model’s personalized instruction and coaching that is tailored to their specific needs. No prior skiing or snowboarding experience is necessary to enroll.

The YES Kids experience is only available to youth who have minimal experience skiing or snowboarding. This option is to offer youth an introduction to the outdoors by spending one day on the slopes. An extra trip day will be offered as space is available.

The Cross-Country Skiing Program

boston ski day trips

The YES Cross-Country Ski Program partners with Weston Ski Track to offer a cross-country ski program- introducing youth to the sport and building their strength and stamina. Youth do not need any prior skiing experience to participate. On trip day, youth may depart from the YES office on a weekday afterschool, participate in equipment fitting, have a ski lesson, break for snack, and have ski unstructured time to practice their skills.

Pricing: Program fee will be determined on a sliding scale according to income eligibility and number of dependents. Fees for income-eligible families can range from $20-$105.

‘Significant’ spring storm to bring flooding rain in Mass., snow up north

Ski country in vermont and new hampshire could see up to 2 feet of snowfall this weekend.

Projected snowfall totals for New England through Sunday.

A significant weather system arrived late Friday — basically a rainstorm for Southern New England but a snow event for northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, which could see 8 inches to 2 feet of snow. A winter storm warning is in effect for portions of Northern New England.

The Boston area will see rain with perhaps a little bit of mixed precipitation at the beginning of the storm late Friday night. Any mixed precipitation will be short-lived and any accumulation across the border towns between Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts would be quite limited and likely gone by the time daylight arrived Saturday morning.

Although there’s going to be rain during the day on Saturday for the Boston area, the heaviest will hold off until the afternoon and evening. It is during this time that there could be some heavy downpours and even the rumble of thunder over Southeastern Massachusetts. This is also the area where the rain totals are going to be heaviest.

About 1 to 2 inches of rain, with some isolated 3-inch amounts, are possible for Southern New England, especially south of the Mass Pike.

There could be anywhere from 2 to 3 inches in water equivalent. Elsewhere, 1 to 2 inches of rain, with some isolated 3-inch amounts, are possible, especially south of the Mass Pike. I do not expect coastal flooding or wind damage with this storm, although some isolated strong gusts are possible with the heaviest rain.

A flood watch has been issued for Greater Boston, southeastern Massachusetts, the Cape and Islands, Rhode Island and eastern Connecticut from 8 a.m., Saturday through early Sunday.

This will be enough rainfall for some urban street flooding and perhaps some basement flooding. Some small streams and rivers may also reach flood stage, but I don’t expect anything moderate or major.

There will be enough rainfall for some urban street flooding and perhaps some basement flooding. Some small streams and rivers may also reach flood stage.

Snow for Northern New England

A mixed bag of precipitation is likely across Northern New England. Along the coastline of New Hampshire and Maine, it’s mostly going to be rain or mixed precipitation. However, the farther north and west you travel and the higher in elevation you are, the more snow there will be.

There’s the potential for over a foot of snow in the highest elevations of Maine and many of the northern ski areas should see a significant snow event. This will help to keep skiing going into April for those areas that are planning on staying open and skiing should be quite good Sunday and much of next week.

It turns blustery and drier for Sunday with some peaks of sunshine through passing clouds. Temperatures are going to be in the 40s and remain below average until sometime in the middle of next week when readings will finally get back to seasonable levels, but this is likely also accompanied by some more precipitation.
