When do you use take sb to and take sb for/on it is a pleasure to take you to a sightseeing tour of my city--> wrong. it is a pleasure to take you for/on a sightseeing tour of my city--> right. Why?

Hi They are both correct, but have different meanings.

gringuitoloco

I'm going to take you for a ride---means you will drive someone around, like in a car. I'm going to take you to a ride--means you will bring someone to some type of amusement ride, like a ferris wheel. In your example, using "to" means bringing to a LOCATION that does sightseeing tours. Using "for" means bringing on an actual sightseeing tour. Also, It is a pleasure sounds weird...It seems as though you should say "It was a pleasure."

you re right, i wanted to say "it was a pleasure". So, to sum up, take sb to is for a place, whereas take sb for is to do an activity. am I right?

Mihael00 said: you re right, i wanted to say "it was a pleasure". So, to sum up, take sb to is for a place, whereas take sb for is to do an activity. am I right? Click to expand...

It depends on the intrinsic meaning of the preposition: to + destination for = objective on = physical position (means of transport, on board a; tour bus, plane, train etc.) "It is a pleasure" is fine if you wish to pay a compliment while on the tour

Gaming content creator, fast-food crew member, artist. Those are some of the career paths members of SB19 would have considered if things hadn't worked out.

These days, the Filipino boy band – made up of Pablo, Stell, Ken, Justin and Josh – don’t have to worry about that as they have become the new face of pop music in the Philippines .

They are the first Filipino act to be nominated in the Billboard Music Awards for Top Social Artist and the first South-East Asian act to enter the top 10 of Billboard’s Social 50 charts. They also broke a record set by BTS for longest No 1 reign on Billboard's Trending Songs chart.

They made headlines in May when they cracked the Billboard World Digital Sales top 10 chart with their song Gento and recently performed at the Pinoy Pop Convention in Manila last week.

“The transition of us from being 'nobodies' to being well-known was fast," Pablo tells The National . "We were thinking about giving up before, but overnight, everything changed.

“People noticed and treated us differently all of a sudden. We think that was the biggest surprise of all. We are privileged to have been well-known this quickly, but we don't take it for granted.”

A history of SB19

SB19 formed in 2016 after participating in a talent contest held by ShowBT Philippines, a subsidiary of the South Korean company ShowBT.

The members were originally selected to be performers for company events, but former ShowBT chief executive Jung Sung-han saw their potential and decided to instead turn them into a boy band.

After training for a couple of years in the familiar regime that K-pop artists undertake, SB19 made their debut in 2018 with the song Tilaluha . They toured malls and schools but the song received a muted reception. This lack of initial success almost led to the group disbanding. It was their second single, Go Up , released in 2019, that turned their luck around.

A fan shared the dance practice video of the song and it went viral on social media. A few months later, the group entered the Billboard Next Big Sound chart, becoming the first Filipino act to do so.

"We never expected that we will be able to come this far in our careers," says Ken. "Not too long ago, we thought of giving up, but we stayed strong for our dreams."

The members are also aware of how their fan base has helped in their global success. Affectionately known as “A-tin” (the Tagalog word for ours), the meaning of the name is a nod to promoting the message that the group’s success is also down to the fans.

“Thank you so much for staying and working with us to achieve our goals and dreams,” says Justin. “Everything we achieve is 'atin'.”

Looking towards the future

Last year, SB19 performed in Dubai as the first stop in their WYAT (Where You At) tour and previously at Expo 2020 Dubai . They are now embarking on their Pagtatag tour with 10 stops in the US and Canada. While they haven't yet announced a return to the region, they say they hope they can come back to do a tour around the UAE or the Middle East afterwards.

SB19 have been compared to K-pop groups because of their suave dance moves and colourful styles and the band say they are influenced by the genre as well as western acts. However, they maintain that they still have their own sound.

“I think the main thing that we got from K-pop is the inspiration to train in order to become better artists,” says Pablo. “That motivated us to work hard and make a name for ourselves.”

Fans at the SB19 concert in Dubai last year. Ruel Pableo for The National

Justin adds: “In our generation, during the time we were training, that's the time K-Pop was starting to be more well received all over the world.

“Western music is one of the influences of K-pop, and our music has similar influences, like N’Sync and other boy groups.”

But they still want to distinguish themselves as well as bring more attention to the music scene in the Philippines.

Last month, they announced they had left ShowBT and founded their own label, 1Z Entertainment, where they hope to have more creative freedom over their music but also help other musicians in the country be successful, too.

“Our main goal is to contribute to the Philippine music industry and help make Filipino music more recognised globally,” says Ken. “Also, to uplift and inspire people. We established 1Z Entertainment for these [reasons].”

When asked what they think sets them apart, they say they listen to their fans.

"We don't think there’s a formula on what makes us special, but from the comments we've read, they say we have genuine love for our craft, we work hard, and we each have distinct personalities," says Stell.

"We value our authenticity. We stay true to ourselves and our individualities. We also put a lot of ourselves in what we do."

What to know about SB 4, the Texas immigration law in the courts now

A whirlwind of court orders on Tuesday briefly allowed, then blocked again, a controversial new immigration law in Texas that would allow state and local law enforcement to arrest and deport people who are in the state illegally.

The Biden administration has objected to the law, known as Senate Bill 4, saying that the Constitution and legal precedent establish that the federal government has the exclusive power to enforce immigration law.

Texas' illegal entry law will test states' powers on immigration, border enforcement

While a federal court considers the merits of the law, a legal back-and-forth over whether the bill should take effect in the meantime created chaos Tuesday.

For several hours, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the law to be enforced. But then, close to midnight, a lower court put the law back on hold and scheduled a last-minute hearing on Wednesday morning.

At the hearing, a three-judge panel questioned the Texas solicitor general about details of the law and heard arguments from the U.S. Department of Justice and the ACLU about why it should be struck down.

The law remains on hold while the appeals court deliberates.

Here's what to know:

What is SB 4?

Senate Bill 4 is a Texas law passed late last year that empowers state and local law enforcement agencies to enforce immigration law. Texas Republicans who championed the legislation say it's a response to the Biden administration's border policies, which they have criticized as being too permissive.

"It's important because it helps address what even the president has called a border crisis," said Texas solicitor general Aaron Nielson at Wednesday's hearing.

Texas has spent over $148 million busing migrants to other parts of the country

Texas has spent over $148 million busing migrants to other parts of the country

The bill would allow state and local police officers to arrest people suspected of being in the country illegally, and it would allow judges to order the deportation of migrants to ports of entry along Texas's border with Mexico, regardless of which country the migrant is from.

The bill was originally set to go into effect on March 5. But the U.S. government and the ACLU both filed lawsuits against it, and a district judge issued a preliminary injunction to block the law from enforcement while the case was being heard.

Texas appealed the injunction to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The appeals court turned to the Supreme Court, which ultimately allowed the law to go into effect on Tuesday before the appeals court blocked it. (The Supreme Court did not issue an opinion clarifying whether the majority had supported the merits of the law or if it simply viewed its decision as a procedural one.)

Now, the Wednesday hearing at the Fifth Circuit considered the question of whether to allow the district judge's preliminary injunction to take effect — thereby continuing to block SB 4 from enforcement.

What is the legal challenge to the bill?

The Biden administration has argued that Texas overstepped its constitutional limits in passing SB 4, and they maintain that immigration policy and law enforcement are exclusive functions of the federal government.

Critics of SB 4 have cast the law as Texas' attempt to take over those law enforcement capabilities, a notion that Nielson disputed at Wednesday's hearing. "That's really not true," he told the panel. "What Texas wants to do is to be able to coordinate with the federal government."

Federal attorneys, meanwhile, have repeatedly pointed to a 2012 Supreme Court decision known as Arizona vs. United States , a case about a state law in Arizona that sought to create state-level crimes for immigration offenses and empower local law enforcement to check citizenship status and arrest people suspected of being in the country illegally. In a 5-3 decision, the court sided with the federal government and struck down most of Arizona's law.

Because the Texas law goes further than Arizona, Department of Justice attorney Daniel Tenny argued Wednesday, SB 4's provisions should too be blocked. "This is more at the heart at the area that the court has consistently recognized is reserved for the national government," he said.

What do opponents of the law say?

Groups that advocate for civil rights and immigrants' rights have criticized the law over concerns that it could lead to racial profiling. SB 4 would allow law enforcement officers to question someone's immigration status for any reason.

"We know that this law is going to increase racial profiling. We know that this law is going to strip people of their constitutional rights. We know that this law is also going to lead to the mass criminalization of our communities," said Alan Lizarraga, a spokesperson for the Border Network for Human Rights, speaking to the Texas Newsroom .

Opponents also worry that migrants with legitimate claims to asylum could have their federal cases asylum complicated by the Texas law if they come to face state criminal charges.

Mexico also opposes the law. Its foreign affairs ministry said in a statement Tuesday that the country will not accept migrants who have been deported under the Texas law. And it expressed concern for Mexican nationals living in Texas, who it said could now be subject to "expressions of hate, discrimination and racial profiling."

With the case back at the Fifth Circuit, Mexico said it plans to file a legal brief in opposition to SB 4 that lays out how the law could affect the relationship between the two countries, the statement said.

What do law enforcement officers in Texas say about the law?

Local law enforcement officers say they are prepared to enforce the law. But others have said they have not received clear guidance about how to implement it, or whether they'll have resources needed to carry out arrests in large numbers.

"I think we're going to be very selective about the cases we pick up," said Culberson County Sheriff Oscar Carillo, whose jurisdiction is located along the west Texas border. "Our jail is at capacity as we speak today, and to start incarcerating undocumented people and charging them a misdemeanor crime is a discussion I'll have to have with my county attorney," he told the Texas Newsroom on Tuesday.

Wednesday's appeals court hearing revealed the extent to which details of the law's enforcement have yet to be hammered out. Nielson, the Texas solicitor general, struggled to answer a series of questions from Chief Judge Priscilla Richman about how various scenarios would play out.

For instance, when Richman asked how the law would be applied to a person who entered the U.S. illegally through another border state before moving to Texas, Nielson replied, "I confess, your honor, I don't know."

Supreme Court Won’t Block, for Now, Aggressive Texas Immigration Law

The law, which empowers local officials to arrest and deport migrants who enter the country without authorization, was challenged by the Biden administration as an affront to federal power.

The Supreme Court temporarily sided with Texas on Tuesday in its increasingly bitter fight with the Biden administration over immigration policy, allowing an expansive state law to go into effect that makes it a crime for migrants to enter Texas without authorization.

As is typical when the court acts on emergency applications, its order gave no reasons. But Justice Amy Coney Barrett, joined by Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, filed a concurring opinion that seemed to express the majority’s bottom line.

They were returning the case to an appeals court for a prompt ruling on whether the law should be paused while an appeal moves forward, Justice Barrett wrote. “If a decision does not issue soon,” she wrote, “the applicants may return to this court.”

For now, though, Texas law enforcement officials will be allowed to arrest people suspected of crossing the border illegally. How long that remains true is now a question for the appeals court.

The three liberal members of the court — Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson — dissented.

“Today, the court invites further chaos and crisis in immigration enforcement,” Justice Sotomayor wrote. “Texas passed a law that directly regulates the entry and removal of noncitizens and explicitly instructs its state courts to disregard any ongoing federal immigration proceedings. That law upends the federal-state balance of power that has existed for over a century, in which the national government has had exclusive authority over entry and removal of noncitizens.”

Justice Sotomayor, joined by Justice Jackson, said the majority had rewarded the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit for using an unseemly procedural gambit. The appeals court had entered an “administrative stay” of a trial judge’s ruling blocking the law.

Such administrative stays are meant to give courts time to consider whether to enter actual stays, and they are typically in place for brief periods. But the Fifth Circuit, Justice Sotomayor wrote, “recently has developed a troubling habit of leaving ‘administrative’ stays in place for weeks if not months.”

She wrote that “the Fifth Circuit abused its discretion, and this court makes the same mistake by permitting a temporary administrative stay.”

The two justices’ dissent spanned 10 caustic pages. Justice Kagan issued a shorter and milder dissent, though she agreed that the majority should have not have been swayed by the appeals court’s procedural choices.

“I do not think the Fifth Circuit’s use of an administrative stay, rather than a stay pending appeal, should matter,” she wrote. “Administrative stays surely have their uses. But a court’s unreasoned decision to impose one for more than a month, rather than answer the stay pending appeal issue before it, should not spell the difference between respecting and revoking long-settled immigration law.”

The court’s order addressed just one aspect of the clashes between the White House and Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, who has embarked on a multibillion-dollar campaign to deter migrants, including by installing razor wire along the banks of the Rio Grande and a barrier of buoys in the river.

The surge in migrants entering the United States has intensified a fraught battle over immigration policy, underscoring deep divisions between and sometimes within political parties. It has led to the impeachment by House Republicans of the homeland security secretary and the failure of a bipartisan Senate deal to increase border security.

The law in Texas, sometimes called S.B. 4, also empowers state courts to order the deportation of migrants who enter the state without authorization. The administration, civil rights groups and El Paso County challenged the law, saying it interfered with the federal government’s power to set immigration policy and to conduct foreign affairs.

In 2012, in Arizona v. United States, the Supreme Court endorsed broad federal power in those areas by a 5-to-3 vote.

“Arizona may have understandable frustrations with the problems caused by illegal immigration” while the federal government tries to address them, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the majority, “but the state may not pursue policies that undermine federal law.”

The court’s composition has changed since then, and officials in Texas are hopeful that the current justices will alter the balance of power between the federal government and the states in the realm of immigration.

In allowing the law go into effect, the Supreme Court, for now at least sided with Texas, Justice Sotomayor wrote.

“The court gives a green light to a law that will upend the longstanding federal-state balance of power and sow chaos, when the only court to consider the law concluded that it is likely unconstitutional,” she wrote.

In a Supreme Court filing , Texas said its law was meaningfully different from the one at issue in Arizona. But if the justices disagreed, the filing said, “Arizona should be overruled as contrary to both statutory and constitutional text, structure and history.”

Judge David A. Ezra , of the Federal District Court in Austin, last month entered a preliminary injunction blocking the Texas law, saying the plaintiffs were likely to win on several grounds. “Over a century of Supreme Court cases,” he added, recognized that the Constitution gave the federal government the dominant role in addressing immigration.

Judge Ezra, who was appointed by President Ronald Reagan, rejected Texas’ argument that its law was authorized by a clause of the Constitution forbidding states from engaging in war “unless actually invaded, or in such imminent danger as will not admit of delay.”

He gave three reasons. Unauthorized immigration, he said, is not an invasion. Enforcing the state law is not engaging in war. And even if both things were true, Texas “would have to abide by federal directives.”

Texas asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit to block Judge Ezra’s ruling and allow the law to go into effect while it hears an appeal. A divided three-judge panel of the appeals court almost immediately did so , without providing reasons. The appeal is scheduled to be argued on April 3.

The panel gave the plaintiffs a week to seek relief from the Supreme Court. After the plaintiffs filed emergency applications, Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., who oversees the Fifth Circuit, extended the appeals court’s brief stay to allow the justices to consider the matter.

In the administration’s emergency application , Solicitor General Elizabeth B. Prelogar wrote that the Texas law amounted to “interference with the nation’s ability to speak with one voice in international affairs” and “would significantly harm the United States’ relationship with Mexico.”

She added that the law “would fundamentally disrupt the federal immigration regime to allow a single state to make unilateral determinations regarding unlawful entry and removal.”

In response , Texas said it “has the sovereign right to defend itself from violent transnational cartels that flood the state with fentanyl, weapons and all manner of brutality.”

In January, addressing another emergency application from the Biden administration, the Supreme Court allowed federal officials to cut or remove parts of a razor-wire barrier along the Mexican border that Texas had erected to keep migrants from crossing into the state.

But that ruling, by a 5-to-4 vote, was only an interim victory for the administration.

Tuesday’s ruling, too, was provisional. But Justice Sotomayor wrote that it was infected by grave errors.

“The court confronts a state immigration law that will transform the balance of power at the border and have life-altering consequences for noncitizens in Texas,” she wrote, adding: “The Fifth Circuit has not yet weighed in, but nevertheless issued a one-sentence administrative order that is maximally disruptive to foreign relations, national security, the federal-state balance of power and the lives of noncitizens. The court should not permit this state of affairs.”

Supreme Court allows Texas to enforce immigration law

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed Texas to enforce for now a contentious new law  that gives local police the power to arrest migrants.

The conservative-majority court, with three liberal justices dissenting, rejected an emergency request by the Biden administration, which said states have no authority to legislate on immigration , an issue the federal government has sole authority over.

That means the law can go into effect while litigation continues in lower courts. It could be blocked at a later date.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, hailed the court order , calling it "clearly a positive development," though he acknowledged that the legal battle is not over.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that the law "will not only make communities in Texas less safe, it will also burden law enforcement and sow chaos and confusion at our southern border."

An aerial view of migrants crossing the Rio Grande.

“The court gives a green light to a law that will upend the longstanding federal-state balance of power and sow chaos,” liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in a dissenting opinion. Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson also objected to the decision.

The majority did not explain its reasoning, but one of the conservative justices, Amy Coney Barrett, wrote separately to note that an appeals court has yet to weigh in on the issue.

"If a decision does not issue soon, the applicants may return to this court," she wrote. Her opinion was joined by fellow conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The court has a 6-3 conservative majority.

In response to the Supreme Court order, the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals fast-tracked oral arguments on the Biden administration’s effort to block the law. Arguments are set to take place Wednesday morning, meaning a decision could come quickly.

The law in question, known as SB4, allows police to arrest migrants who illegally cross the border from Mexico and imposes criminal penalties. It would also empower state judges to order people to be deported to Mexico.

A top Mexico official said Tuesday in a statement on X that the country will not accept deportations from Texas.

According to a spokesperson for the Texas Department for Public Safety, there is no start date yet for enforcement of the law. Lt. Chris Olivarez said that state officials have been planning for its implementation for months, but they’re still discussing some practical details.

In Val Verde County on the U.S.-Mexico border, Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez said his small force, with three deputies on duty around the clock for a 3,145 square mile county of 47,586 people, will not start arresting migrants until he receives guidance from the state.

“I think that we all are in uncharted waters,” he said Tuesday.

He said not only is he not sure how and when to initiate enforcement of the state law, but that he will likely need more deputies and jail space if tasked with the new enforcement initiative. The county jail has a daily capacity of 94, Martinez said.“Right now we’re not equipped to handle that,” he said.

The dispute is the latest clash between the Biden administration and Texas over immigration enforcement on the U.S.-Mexico border.

In a separate opinion, Kagan wrote that the Texas law appears to conflict with federal law, noting that "the subject of immigration generally, and the entry and removal of noncitizens particularly, are matters long thought the special province of the federal government."

A federal judge blocked the law after the Biden administration sued, but the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in a brief order that it could go into effect March 10 if the Supreme Court declined to intervene. The appeals court has not yet decided whether to grant the federal government's request to block the law.

On March 4, Justice Samuel Alito issued a temporary freeze on the law to give the Supreme Court time to consider the federal government’s request.

Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar said in court papers that the law is “flatly inconsistent” with Supreme Court precedent dating back 100 years.

“Those decisions recognize that the authority to admit and remove noncitizens is a core responsibility of the national government, and that where Congress has enacted a law addressing those issues, state law is preempted,” she wrote.

The appeals court, Prelogar added, did not explain its reasoning for allowing the law to go into effect.

She dismissed Texas’ argument that its law can be defended on the basis that the state is effectively battling an invasion at the border under the State War Clause of the Constitution. The provision says states cannot “engage in war, unless actually invaded” or in imminent danger.

“A surge of unauthorized immigration plainly is not an invasion within the meaning of the State War Clause,” Prelogar wrote.

Defending the law, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in court papers that the measure complements federal law and the state should be allowed to enforce it.

The Constitution “recognizes that Texas has the sovereign right to defend itself from violent transnational cartels that flood the state with fentanyl, weapons, and all manner of brutality,” he added.

Texas is “the nation’s first-line defense against transnational violence and has been forced to deal with the deadly consequences of the federal government’s inability or unwillingness to protect the border,” Paxton said.

The city of El Paso and two immigrant rights groups, Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center and American Gateways, have also challenged the law and filed their own emergency request at the Supreme Court.

In 2012, the Supreme Court invalidated provisions of a tough immigration law enacted in Arizona. Only two of the justices who were in the majority in that case are still on the court: Chief Justice John Roberts and Sotomayor.

Jordan Spieth, Valspar Championship

The Tampa Bay area is no stranger to inclement weather, as harsh conditions continue to impact play at this week’s Valspar Championship .

Scores during the second round have ballooned thanks to the 30-mile-per-hour winds blowing across the golf course. Rain is also expected to impact play during the afternoon wave.

“Anything under today was a heck of a round,” said Lucas Glover , who carded a 2-under 69 on Friday morning.

“Anything around par today was a heck of a round.”

The Copperhead Course at Innisbrook hosts the Valspar Championship each year, and it routinely stumps the field thanks to its difficulty. Throw in severe weather, and the Valspar Championship now resembles major championship scoring.

“It’s such a chess game today, hole by hole,” added first-round leader Kevin Streelman, who shot a 1-over 72 on Friday.

Kevin Streelman, PGA Tour, Valspar Championship

“Definitely a grinding round... On courses like this and days like this, you’re not pumping it as hard as you can down the fairway. It’s more of missing it in the right spots a lot of times. It’s all about angles. It’s about not getting yourself into certain positions that are so difficult to be in.”

Streelman carded a brilliant 7-under 64 on Thursday, a round that featured seven birdies and zero bogies. He also led the field in strokes gained approaching the green during the first round, an essential attribute of this course.

The Copperhead Course, much like TPC Sawgrass , is a ball-strikers course.

But during Friday’s blustery second round, Streelman struggled to gain momentum. He now shares the lead at 6-under with Stewart Cink , Mackenzie Hughes, Brendon Todd, and Chandler Phillips.

“I knew it would be a very challenging day, and it’s Friday, so I’m not really too worried about leaderboards anyway; really try to wait until Sunday afternoon,” the 45-year-old Streelman added.

“You just have to take what the course can give you. It’s not giving you much right now.”

Indeed, the course has not offered any reprieve for the players.

“Windy day. Pretty hard conditions. But I tried to be patient,” added K.H. Lee, who shot a 4-under 67 to shoot up to 4-under overall.

“I tried more to play smart, more center of green, and sometimes if I had a good number, I attacked the pin.”

Patience is another key to success at this golf course, often regarded as the most underrated on the PGA Tour.

Lucas Glover, PGA Tour, Valspar Championship

“I think this place, you understand that not all the holes are really attackable, especially on a day like today where it’s, let’s get in the fairway first, and then we’ll go from there, that type of thing,” Glover added.

“I did a nice job of that today. My only bogey was because I missed the fairway, and that’s what this place can do to you.”

Many notable players struggled on Friday, with no one more so than Kevin Kisner , who signed for a 4-over 75. He opened with a 9-over 80, and will thus miss the cut.

So, too, will young Aussie Min Woo Lee , who also shot a 4-over 75 on Friday.

But Jordan Spieth , who missed the cut last week at The Players , missed the weekend once more. He shot a 3-over 74 Friday and finished at 1-over for the championship, missing the cut by a stroke.

Conditions will improve slightly during Saturday’s third round, but winds will still gust up to 20 miles per hour, creating challenging situations throughout.
