The 32 Best TV Shows About Time Travel

time travel TV shows

Time traveling is a popular topic when it comes to all types of entertainment from books to films. But in recent years time travel has also become a popular theme in TV.

So let’s take a look at this list of the best time traveling TV shows and find out how each of them handles time travel and all the history that comes with it.

Doctor Who, BBC One (1963 – 1989, 2005 – present)

BBC One Doctor Who

When it comes to time traveling and TV, probably the most notable name in this niche is Doctor Who  because this time travel series has been around for 39 seasons and is still going strong.

Hailing from British television channel BBC One, Doctor Who tells the tale of the Time Lord aka The Doctor, and his companions as they travel to different times and try to prevent evil forces from changing history and hurting innocent lives.

Once the Time Lord gets hurt beyond healing, he can transform into a new body and continue saving the world. Hence why at this point 13 (soon to be 14) different actors have played The Doctor.

Doctor Who is not only a huge part of the fabric of British popular culture but by now this time travel show has found its way into the hearts of many people all over the world.

It has inspired many spin-offs in the form of TV shows, comic books, movies, novels, you name it. But more than that, by now it has become an industry standard both when it comes to science-fiction television series and shows about time travel.

No wonder that Doctor Who continues to be successful after countless actor changes and plot twists.

Where to watch Doctor Who:

Timeless, nbc (2016 – 2018).

NBC Timeless

Another time travel TV series that has already become a cult classic and is adored by fans all over the world is NBC’s Timeless . And despite the turmoil that this show has gone through, it still is time traveling at its best.

Starring Malcolm Barrett, Matt Lanter, and Abigail Spencer as Rufus, Wyatt, and Lucy, Timeless  details the trio traveling to different times in an effort to stop their adversaries from rewriting history.

But as it later turns out, the conspiracy goes deeper than them just changing history. Since the people who our trio is chasing are traveling through time to take down a dangerous and all-powerful organization. The same one that helped build the time machine that Rufus, Wyatt, and Lucy are using.

And although Timeless went on for just two seasons (and a two-hour wrap-up movie), you should still check out the show because it’s not only entertaining but will make you think and want to know more about the events that each episode is exploring.

Where to watch Timeless:

Dc’s legends of tomorrow, the cw (2016 – present).

DC's Legends of Tomorrow

If you are a fan of superhero TV shows, then you will probably have heard about DC’s Legends of Tomorrow . It is a show that is a huge part of The CW’s Arrowverse. And has crossed over with shows like Arrow , The Flash , and Supergirl multiple times now.

And even if you don’t like the rest of the superhero series but do enjoy a good old time travel TV show, then I suggest you still give Legends of Tomorrow a watch.

The plot of this show is based around a team of superheroes that are traveling through time in their time machine christened the Waverider to prevent different catastrophes from happening. Both ones made by others and those created by the team’s previous adventures.

At the forefront, there are well-known DC heroes like Rip Hunter, Firestorm, The Atom, Kid Flash, Steel, and Vixen. Joined by some original characters like Caity Lotz’s White Canary among others.

One of the defining characteristics of Legends of Tomorrow is how fun it is. Because adjectives like unapologetic, witty, and entertaining are frequently used to describe this time travel series.

However, more than that, it adds an interesting layer to the whole Arrowverse universe. And above all, it is just a hoot to watch.

Where to watch Legends of Tomorrow:

12 monkeys, syfy (2015 – 2018).

SyFy 12 Monkeys

Then there also is SyFy’s 12 Monkeys , which is a little darker take on time traveling. One that comes with mystery, drama, and apocalyptic stakes. But that doesn’t lessen how good this time travel TV series is.

Split between two timelines, 12 Monkeys centers on Aaron Stanford’s James Cole, who is tasked to travel back in time and stop the distribution of a virus that has the ability to end the human race as we know it.

In Cole’s real timeline, the year is 2043 and people are struggling to survive because of the terrible mutations caused by the virus. So Cole travels back to 2015 to find virologist Cassie Railly, played by Amanda Schull, that can help him stop the release of the virus and the organization that is behind it called The Army of the 12 Monkeys.

If you think about it, the post-apocalyptic setting and time travel really do go hand in hand. Because if you can go back in time to stop history from being changed, why not go back to change it if it prevents something terrible from happening?

And that is what this show explores. Beautifully combining elements of mystery, drama, and science fiction, to form a great TV show.

Where to watch 12 Monkeys:

Outlander, starz (2014 – present).

time travel tv series uk

Want another show that mixes time travel with historical events and does it flawlessly? Then you should put Outlander on your must-watch TV show list!

The show starts in the 1940s when a combat nurse Claire Randall visits Inverness, Scotland as part of her second honeymoon with her husband Frank. Claire accidentally happens upon the standing stones at Craigh na Dun which transport her back in time to 1743.

To return to her own time she first has to survive 18th-century Scotland. And she does so by joining a group of rebel Highlanders from Clan MacKenzie and marrying one of the Highlanders, Jamie Fraser. But eventually, she falls in love with her new husband and aids the clan in evading British redcoats that are pursuing them.

Over the five seasons of Outlander that are currently out (with the sixth coming soon), we see Claire jump back and forth between the 20th and 18th centuries and her two families as she faces two pregnancies, wars, and much more. But eventually, Claire finds her way back to Jamie.

Where to watch Outlander:

Travelers, showcase (2016 – 2018).

Netflix Travelers

Then we have Travelers , a joint venture between Netflix and Canada’s Showcase that will tick all of your time travel TV show boxes.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world , this show depicts the adventures of travelers – operatives who go back in time to prevent the collapse of society.

These travelers are transferred into the bodies of our current-day humans, who otherwise would die, to blend in with twenty-first-century people. And with the help of their artificial intelligence boss from the future, travelers carry out missions in order to stop many catastrophic events from happening.

Travelers is a great mix of sci-fi and drama, featuring a great cast and spine-tingling storylines. So if you love all that and love a good time-travel series, then look no further than Travelers .

Where to watch Travelers:

Dark, netflix (2017 – 2020).

time travel tv series uk

Netflix’s first German original series was the science fiction series Dark , which mixes in some mystery drama with sci-fi: time travel, the apocalypse, wormholes, and parallel worlds.

Dark takes place in Winden, a fictional German town, and begins in 2019 after children begin to disappear from the town. As the show progresses, however, timelines jump drastically between as early as 1921 to as late as 2053.

As four families in Winden investigate the disappearances to reunite with their lost loved ones, they discover a wormhole beneath the local powerplant that allows them to travel between timelines, thus uncovering a generations-long conspiracy involving the town and their families.

Where to watch Dark:

The umbrella academy, netflix (2019 – present).

time travel tv series uk

Netflix brings another to the list with The Umbrella Academy .

On October 1, 1989, 43 infants were suddenly born from unsuspecting women despite them not even being pregnant the day before.

7 of them were raised together as the Hargreeve siblings and trained in their respective abilities until their relationship became strained as teenagers and they drifted apart.

Now, as adults, they’re brought back together by the death of their adoptive father – and the threat of the end of the world, of course.

They’re forced to travel back in time but end up in different times and places, and must find each other again to stop the nuclear apocalypse.

Where to watch The Umbrella Academy:

Seven days, upn (1998 – 2001).

time travel tv series uk

We know that the National Security Agency has its share of secrets, but what if one of those secrets was a time-traveling machine?

In UPN’s Seven Days , the plot centers on one such device made from alien technology found at Roswell.

The Chronosphere, as it’s called, can only be used in times when national security is at risk – the limited capacity of the device allows for just one human to go back in time by seven days in order to avert disasters.

Thus, when the White House is attacked, the NSA employs former Navy SEAL and CIA operative Frank Parker to go back and prevent it from happening.

Where to watch Seven Days:

Loki, disney+ (2021 – present).

time travel tv series uk

Yes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the greatest gifts to the cinema of our time. Now, the MCU has expanded even further into the television medium and we’ve got a few series to accompany it!

One of those is Loki , which of course, centers on the God of Thunder’s mischievous adopted brother.

After the events in Avengers: Endgame , particularly his stealing of the Tesseract, Loki inadvertently creates another timeline that began in 2012, making him a “time variant” version of himself.

When confronted by the authorities, Loki is given two choices: face punishment and cease to exist, or travel through time to fix his own mess and the threat that has emerged.

Where to watch Loki:

Making history, fox (2017).

time travel tv series uk

The thing about traveling back in time is, you have to be very careful that your actions in the past won’t affect the future (which is essentially your actual present).

Most of the time, that’s something you wouldn’t know until you go back to your time. In Making History , however, Dan Chambers travels back in time to right before the American Revolution and sets off a series of events that seriously mess up the future.

Being able to constantly travel between time periods, Dan recruits the help of history professor Chis Parrish to travel with him and ensure that the American Revolution still takes place.

Where to watch Making History:

Quantum leap, nbc (1989 – 1993).

time travel tv series uk

The title of NBC’s sci-fi comedy-drama Quantum Leap is also the name of the time travel machine that accidentally sends its creator, physicist Dr. Sam Beckett, back into the past.

Now, he’s stuck – and not as himself, either!

Sam discovers that he jumped into the body of a stranger and because he’s still himself, doesn’t know all the details of his current identity.

With the help of his friend Al, who appears as a hologram only he can see, he must fix something that went wrong so he can jump in time again and eventually get back to his own body.

Where to watch Quantum Leap:

Quantum leap, nbc (2022 – present).

time travel tv series uk

Speaking of Quantum Leap , in 2022 NBC revived the 1989 series into a more modern take on the cult classic.

In this new Quantum Leap , thirty years have passed since Dr. Sam Beckett vanished into the Quantum Leap accelerator, and the Quantum Leap project was put to rest.

Now the project is restarted with a new team, who tries to puzzle together the mysteries behind Beckett and his time-traveling machine.

So, we follow Ben Song, the lead physicist of the Quantum Leap time travel project, who gets lost in the past after leaping back in time.

As he tries to return to the present he is helped by his fiancée Addison Augustine, who appears to him as a hologram during each leap, and the team back in the present time.

Where to watch Quantum Leap reboot:

The way home, hallmark channel (2023 – present).

time travel tv series uk

Among the newest time travel shows on this list is Hallmark’s The Way Home which has already been renewed for a second season.

The Way Home follows three generations of Landry women who learn that they can time travel after discovering a magic pond on their family’s farm in Port Haven.

When Kat and her daughter Alice return to Port Haven and are forced to move in with Alice’s estranged mother Del, the three women use time travel to uncover their family history, including what really happened to Kat’s little brother Jacob and whether they can prevent his disappearance.

Where to watch The Way Home:

Russian doll, netflix (2019 – 2022).

time travel tv series uk

Netflix’s Russian Doll deviates from the traditional time travel theme of a willing traveler in one specific timeline because Russian Doll’s protagonist Nadia Vulvokov not only has absolutely no choice or control over her so-called time traveling, but hers is also a time loop.

She wakes up every day having to relive the day of her 36th birthday party in New York City; every time, she dies and comes back to the exact same moment.

Every time, Nadia scrambles to figure out what happens to her and tries to prevent her death, leading her to find Alan, a man who is experiencing the same time loop.

Where to watch Russian Doll:

Undone, prime video (2019 – present).

time travel tv series uk

Undone may be an animated series, but it certainly isn’t geared toward younger audiences; though there is a touch of comedy, the series leans more towards the psychological drama genre and “explores the elastic nature of reality”.

The series follows Alma Winograd-Diaz right after she gets into a near-fatal car accident.

Right before the crash, she has a strange vision of her dead father, and right after it, she finds that she now has the ability to manipulate and move through time.

Using this newfound power, she travels between time periods to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding her father’s death.

Where to watch Undone:

Voyagers, nbc (1982 – 1983).

time travel tv series uk

Premiering back in the early 1980s, NBC’s Voyagers! Is set in a world where time travel already exists.

In fact, there’s already a secret society in place that trains its members, called Voyagers, to go back in time and make sure that historical events happen exactly the way they’re supposed to – otherwise it could affect the present in unexpected ways.

One such Voyager is Phineas Bogg, although he isn’t exactly the best at the job.

During an accidental trip to 1982, he meets the young Jeffrey Jones and ends up bringing him along on one of his missions.

Having lost his Guidebook, Phineas now needs to rely on the extremely smart Jeffrey to get history right.

Where to watch Voyagers!:

Fringe, fox (2008 – 2013).

time travel tv series uk

Fox’s Fringe is a series that was well into the science fiction genre, with parallel universes, supernatural abilities, biotechnology, doomsday predictions, and of course, time travel.

The title is taken from fringe science, which is a branch that deals with scientific theories riddled with skepticism or even having been disproven already.

In Fringe , Special Agent Olivia Dunham is assigned to oversee the FBI ’s Fringe Division, which is run by Peter Bishop and his father Walter.

Together, the team uses both fringe science and Olivia’s knowledge in investigative techniques to explore the unexplained.

In the process, they discover a larger mystery involving parallel universes and alternate timelines .

Where to watch Fringe:

Time after time, abc (2017).

time travel tv series uk

ABC’s Time After Time is based on the novel of the same name written by Kevin Williamson in 1979.

In addition to that, each episode takes its title from a line in Cyndi Lauper’s song, which was inspired by the film (and subsequently, the same book!).

In Time After Time , we are taken to H.G. Wells’ home in 1893.

During a dinner party, he reveals his time machine – right before his guest John Stevenson is arrested for actually being Jack the Ripper .

John escapes through the time machine and Wells follows him straight into the present: 2017. Thus begins a cat-and-mouse game as John attempts to gain control of the machine.

Where to watch Time After Time:

11.22.63, hulu (2016).

time travel tv series uk

When you have anything with Stephen King involved, you know it’s going to be great.

Hulu’s eight-episode miniseries 11.22.63 is based on King’s novel 11/22/63 and is a science fiction thriller like no other.

Starring James Franco in the lead role, 11.22.63 follows Jake Epping, an English teacher from Maine .

His best friend Al reveals a time travel machine and asks him to take over the mission he’s been working on: to travel to the 60s and prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Will Jake be successful in changing a past that simply refuses to be changed?

Where to watch 11.22.63:

The 4400, usa network/sky one (2004 – 2007).

time travel tv series uk

The 4400 is yet another slightly different take on the idea of time travel, in that there has been just one (fairly significant) shift forward in time, to the present.

Beginning in 1946, individuals who were easily overlooked or marginalized by society slowly began disappearing through beams of green light.

Now, all 4400 of them (hence the title) have been returned to the present day – without having aged a day and in some cases, even manifesting supernatural abilities like telekinesis, healing, and telepathy.

Tom Baldwin and Diana Skouris are assigned to investigate the phenomenon and find out why the 4400 have returned.

NOTE: For a fresher take on the show, you can also check out the reboot of the original series which is currently airing on The CW.

Where to watch The 4400:

Somewhere between, abc (2017).

time travel tv series uk

When tragedy strikes our lives, we always wish there was something we could’ve done to prevent it.

In ABC’s Somewhere Between we meet Laura Price, a successful news producer with a great career, a loving husband who’s a district attorney, and a beautiful daughter named Serena.

However, her life changes when the serial killer she is helping the cops to catch kills Serena.

Distraught with grief , Laura attempts to complete suicide but is unsuccessful, instead waking up having time-traveled to a week before Serena’s death.

She teams up with Nico, a former SFPD detective who experienced the same reset and wants to find the real killer to change his brother’s fate as well.

Where to watch Somewhere Between:

Terra nova, fox (2011).

time travel tv series uk

Terra Nova takes its viewers to both extremes of the time-traveling timeline.

The present-day is 2149, where overpopulation has threatened to deplete the Earth’s resources.

In an attempt to save Earth and mankind, scientists have found a way to travel back in time, sending groups of humans back to the Cretaceous Period to set up colonies.

Terra Nova focuses primarily on Elisabeth and Jim Shannon, and their three children, who have joined the 10th pilgrimage to Terra Nova.

They offer their expertise as a trauma surgeon and former narcotics detective and help those in charge with stopping those whose intentions go against the greater good.

Where to watch Terra Nova:

Frequency, the cw (2016 – 2017).

time travel tv series uk

One concept in time travel is known as “the butterfly effect”, wherein one small change in time may have great effects elsewhere.

Frequency demonstrates this concept perfectly.

Raimy Sullivan is an NYPD detective who, after a strange weather phenomenon, discovers that she can communicate with her dead father through his old ham radio.

Believing he was a corrupt cop, she learns the truth and warns him of his murder, thus saving his life.

However, this has profound effects on the future – Raimy’s present.

Now, they must work together across time to save her father and preserve the present.

Where to watch Frequency:

Life on mars, bbc one (2006).

time travel tv series uk

In many of the shows on the list so far, the protagonists experience a time loop that’s triggered at the point of their death.

It’s no different for Sam Tyler, the main character in the British series Life on Mars .

Sam is a Detective Chief Inspector with the Greater Manchester Police, but one day he accidentally gets hit by a car.

When he awakens, he’s in 1973 and working at one rank lower than he was: Detective Inspector.

The selling point of Life on Mars , however, is that we’re left unsure if Sam’s predicament is due to his actual death, a comatose, or time travel.

Where to watch Life on Mars:

Always a witch, netflix (2019 – 2020).

time travel tv series uk

Always A Witch (or Siempre Bruja in its original Spanish title) is a Colombian series that is set in both present-day Colombia and the 17th century .

The series follows Carmen Eguiliuz, a young 19-year-old witch who, after committing the crime of falling in love with a white man in 1646 colonial Colombia, is scheduled to be burned at the stake.

She gets a chance to escape to a new life when the mysterious wizard Aldemar makes a deal with her: he will save the man she loves if she travels into the future to find the woman who can break his curse.

Where to watch Always a Witch:

Beforeigners, hbo (2019 – present).

time travel tv series uk

HBO’s Beforeigners is a Norwegian sci-fi crime drama series and the first Norwegian original from HBO Europe.

The title is a clever play on words centered on the general plot: a group of “foreigners” has suddenly shown up at a neighborhood in Oslo, and they are all from “before” times, or several different time periods in history.

Whether from the Viking period , the Stone Age, or the more recent 19th century , each of these ‘Beforeigners’ tries to integrate in modern-day Norwegian society.

One of them even partners with a detective to investigate first a murdered Stone Age woman, then a series of murderers tied to Jack the Ripper.

Where to watch Beforeigners:

Alice, sbs tv (2020).

time travel tv series uk

Alice was a South Korean sci-fi series that aired in late 2020.

In the lead-up to the main plot, the show’s background is explained to its viewers.

Set in 2050, time travel is monitored by an agency called Alice, which sends its clients to the past to help find closure with deceased loved ones.

Alice one day sends two agents to 1992 in order to find the Book of Prophecy, but one of them disappears with the book and her unborn child.

In 2020, the child becomes a detective and in his investigation into his mother’s death in 2010, discovers the existence of Alice and time travel.

Where to watch Alice:

Live up to your name, tvn (2017).

time travel tv series uk

Yet another South Korean time travel series , Live Up to Your Name initially takes its viewers some 400 years into the past, right in the middle of the Joseon dynasty.

There we meet Heo Im, a doctor of traditional Korean medicine who also specializes in acupuncture.

On one of his treatments of the king’s migraines, he made a mistake and was charged with treason.

Chased by the king’s soldiers, he’s shot with an arrow and presumed dead when he falls into the river – except he ends up waking up in present-day Seoul instead, where he meets cardiothoracic surgeon Choi Yeon-kyung.

Where to watch Live Up to Your Name:

My only love song, netflix (2017).

time travel tv series uk

Our third South Korean series is Netflix’s My Only Love Song , which aired in 2017.

We start off in modern-day Korea where we meet Soo-jung, a talented and top-level actress.

However, it seems that the fame may have gotten to her head as she’s arrogant, and believes fame and money make the world go round.

When things don’t go her way on her new show, she winds up in a time-traveling van that takes her to the 6th century.

There, she meets a man much like herself in terms of arrogance, but his hidden soft spot and generosity towards the poor changes her perspective on her own life and self.

Where to watch My Only Love Song:

Signal, tvn (2016).

time travel tv series uk

Signal is based on the 2000 American film Frequency , but another thing that sets this South Korean series apart from others is that the cases investigated in the series are also based on real-life crimes in the country.

Signal follows a cold case profiler from 2015 and a detective from 1989 simultaneously; they discover they’re able to communicate with each other through an old walkie-talkie.

Using this unique ability to provide much-needed foresight in investigations, they team up to both solve and in some cases, even prevent these horrific crimes.

Where to watch Signal:

Rooftop prince, sbs (2012).

time travel tv series uk

Last but not least, South Korea brings its last time-traveling series to the table with Rooftop Prince , a comedy-drama filled with intrigue, mixed identities, and possible reincarnations.

Crown Prince Lee Gak from the Joseon dynasty accidentally time travels to 2012 with three others from his entourage, and their lives are thrown into a whirlwind.

He crosses paths with Se-na, who looks exactly like his recently deceased wife.

In the hopes of getting answers about his wife’s mysterious drowning, he assumes the identity of another man who he also looks exactly like and attempts to marry Se-na in this timeline as well.

You forgot The Time Tunnel, an Irwin Allen sci-fi show (Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost In Space, Land of The Giants), all classic 60s sci-fi

Journeyman should also be on this list. It was only half a season on NBC but it wraps up to a satisfying conclusion.

Fantastic acting and interesting characters.

Glad someone else watched Journeyman. I thought I’d was a great spiritual successor to Quantum Leap.

Journeyman is one of the good shows u can watch but qunatum leap i watched and didnt like

Where is The Time Tunnel?????

Another show for your list is “Being Erica” (CBC, 2009-2011). Excellent writing, and very unique.

i was looking for this comment. such an underrated show

I concur. This was definitely a great one. It certainly provides a lot of food for thought.

Some of the information in the Doctor Who one is wrong. It started in 1963, it was only revived in 2005 (you put 2006), and it’s been going for 39 seasons, as of June 2022

Thanks for letting me know! I updated the article accordingly.

Catastrophe … Jodie Whittaker in series two of Time.

Time series two review – Jodie Whittaker shines a light on the idiocy of our legal system

The ex-Doctor puts in a brilliant performance alongside Bella Ramsey, as a jailed mum who isn’t allowed enough phone calls to get her kids looked after. It’s a powerful message

J immy McGovern’s 2021 prison drama Time won plaudits by the bucketful. It starred Sean Bean as an inmate navigating the penal system and his conscience, and Stephen Graham as a decent warder being blackmailed by prisoners who knew his son was serving a sentence elsewhere. The series bagged Baftas for best actor (Bean) and best miniseries that year. It was McGovern at his best, his political viewpoint on show, but – bar a few tiny descents into agitprop – pressed into the service of a story about guilt, redemption and the flawed institutions and systems that comprise our approach to justice and prisons.

Now, in this second series, McGovern has recruited a co-writer, Helen Black, and turned his attention to the women’s estate. This time we follow three inmates and their relationships with one another, rather than with the warders. Each is a little too clearly designed as a vehicle for a particular set of problems created, aggravated or failed by their time in prison, but the essentially fine and compassionate writing – plus three sterling performances – generally prevents this from hobbling the story. Siobhan Finneran returns as chaplain Marie-Louise, her faith still moving her to try and make a dent in the mountain of troubles facing her charges, though you can often see the quiet resignation to their fates in her eyes.

Of the main three newcomers, there is Orla (Jodie Whittaker), who we first see rushing her three children through breakfast and off to school so that – unbeknown to anyone – she can make her court appearance after being charged with fiddling her electricity meter. She is taken straight from the courtroom to start a six-month sentence. It seems like Kafkaesque idiocy because it is. There is no one to pick her kids up and the rules don’t allow enough phone calls for her to sort out the kind of childcare snafu every mother has experienced – but multiplied by a million. And from this tiny acorn of petty bureaucracy a mighty oak of catastrophe will grow.

Travelling in the van that will take them all to a prison 60 miles from their homes is 19-year-old prison veteran and heroin addict Kelsey (Bella Ramsey – born in Nottingham, for those of you who missed their native accent in Game of Thrones and wondered what the American actor from The Last of Us was doing here). There are no cavity searches in women’s prisons without reasonable suspicion, so Kelsey is able to carry on using for a few days before returning to methadone. When she discovers she is pregnant, by dealer boyfriend Adam, Kelsey abandons the idea of an abortion when lifer Abi (Tamara Lawrance) informs her that sentencing judges generally go easier when you’re pregnant. The growing foetus provides her with a reason for getting clean, as well as the chance of a place on the mother and baby unit.

Abi’s is the only violent crime, and she is the closest equivalent to Bean’s character in the first series – another unusually middle-class prisoner, coping with a doubly alien world as she struggles with her guilt, the impossibility of redemption and her own extraordinary grief.

She becomes a pariah once the truth of her story is known but – as she points out in a couple of slightly unconvincingly ex-cathedra-ish speeches – she is at least partly the scapegoat for each woman’s own guilt and failings. Black doesn’t deal in simple goodies and simple baddies any more than McGovern did.

The oppressive environment and physical threat that lurked everywhere in the men’s prison first Time round are (largely) replaced here by the mental suffering created by the very different positions of women in society and the ramifications for the families they are taken from. Unsupported mothers (Orla is single, her mother an unsafe alcoholic) lose their children to foster care. Homes and jobs – which already paid barely enough to survive on and often led to the crimes in the first place – are lost. Relationships and pregnancies with bad men create a web of extra complications. McGovern and Black do not make their main or supporting characters out to be saints, but they do give full emphasis to the known fact that most women are imprisoned for low-level, non-violent crimes such as Orla’s – the kind that often wouldn’t get a man incarcerated – or as a result of being forced into illegalities by the men who control them.

With three characters to attend to, it does feel as if the writers’ attention is being stretched too thinly as they try to cover slightly too much ground, from how you deal with an unexpected period in a cell without sanitary towels to the intergenerational effects of abuse and neglect. But, like the first series, it brings attention to a terrible problem and demands a search for answers.

‘bodies’ review: netflix’s sharply acted time-travel series does justice to its wild premise.

Four London detectives in four different time periods stumble upon the same mysterious body in a limited series starring Shira Haas ('Unorthodox').

Shira Haas as DC Maplewood and Stephen Graham as Elias Mannix in Bodies.

Over eight plot-packed hours, Netflix ‘s time-spanning police drama Bodies never quite falls on its face — high praise for a genre whose convolutions reliably start off entertaining and end up infuriating.

Netflix fight night: mike tyson to battle jake paul in "boxing mega-event" streaming live in july, 'avatar: the last airbender' renewed at netflix for final two seasons.

The series begins in the present day with Shahara Hasan (Amaka Okafor), a London detective sergeant, engaging in a foot pursuit in the middle of a far-right rally and stumbling upon a body on Longharvest Lane.

In 1941, a detective (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd’s Whiteman) in bomb-rattled London gets a mysterious call to go to Longharvest Lane to make a pickup. There, in the middle of a torrential downpour, he finds a body.

In 1890, a Whitechapel detective ( Kyle Soller ‘s Hillinghead) is summoned to an alley on Longharvest Lane, where he finds a body.

Did I mention that it’s the same body? Naked. Shot through the eye, but with no bullet to be found. A strange hashmark or glyph tattoo on the wrist.

Are you curious yet?

Will you be more curious if I add that in 2053, in a London seemingly controlled by a platitude-spewing “commander” ( Stephen Graham ), a detective’s ( Shira Haas ‘ Maplewood) snazzy electrical car goes on the fritz in the vicinity of Longharvest Lane? There, she finds … yup … the same darned body.

So that’s four detectives in four time periods and one body, all connected by a doomsday cult, an unspeakable tragedy in 2023 and a future in which technological advancement and utopian equality are accompanied by the sort of autocracy that — spoiler alert — is rarely benign.

There’s some waxing and waning of momentum, but each detective has pivotal pieces of information at different times, and by the time the plotlines began to mesh in the third or fourth episode, I was fully curious about all the show’s major questions — including those related to the disposed body, the hinted-at apocalypse, the importance of Graham’s character and the fantastic or scientific machinations setting everything in motion.

My investment was rarely as great in the levels of primitive prejudice driving the three present/past threads. Hillinghead, who has a wife, daughter and a predictable Big Secret, is constantly witnessing homophobia. Whiteman, who hides his Jewishness, but finds intriguing rapport with a Yiddish-speaking girl (Chloe Raphael’s Esther), is constantly experiencing antisemitism. Despite being a practicing Muslim, Hasan witnesses very little Islamophobia, but the reactionary protests and messaging in the background are visible if you pay attention.

It isn’t that these elements don’t add nuance, but it’s pretty immediately clear that the show isn’t really “about” homophobia or antisemitism or the dangers of white nationalism. They’re semi-generic waves of hatred for the “other” that are mostly there to justify the plausible appeal of the egalitarian subservience in the future — before viewers remember that catchphrase-spouting fascists are rarely a good thing, even if that catchphrase is, “Know you are loved.”

The show’s a little nerdy, but not so nerdy that it demands you nerd out on its level. You can just take the show as a mystery/investigation and then tolerate the strained physics to your desired level. Somebody’s dead. Somebody did it. And it probably didn’t go down quite the way you’ll predict.

This is where the actors are crucial. Haas, so spectacular in Netflix’s Unorthodox , is especially good in the show’s most complicated and outlandish context. She has to withstand much of the exposition in the homestretch, and to convincingly play the character forced to navigate the choice between an enslaved utopia and a free dystopia; she does it without hitting a false note. There are multiple episodes in which the directors — Marco Kreuzpaintner for the first four and Haolu Wang for the next four — clearly realize that if you have only a limited special effects budget, putting Haas in a tight close-up and letting her summon tears can make viewers buy in to almost anything.

The supporting cast features fine work by Raphael, Tom Mothersdale, Synnove Karlsen, Greta Scacchi and more. Even though parts of the show sound silly if you describe them to people, nobody in the cast is performing like they’re in a silly show.

That’s how Bodies ends up working as well as it does. Maybe it isn’t quite ambitious enough to become a story that lingers on an emotional level, but it does general justice to the wildness of its premise and generates investment for the humans caught in the middle of it.

Top 10 Time Travelling TV shows

Here are our top ten favourite time travel shows of all, ahem, time…

By Jonathan Taylor 29-10-15 79,994 -->

time travel tv series uk

Outlander  (now out on Blu-ray and DVD) follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse, who, in 1946, is mysteriously swept back in time to the Scotland of 1743 and immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened.

We’ve seen time travel on the big screen countless times but TV is so much better at showing its intricacies; in fact it may be the best medium for sci-fi in general. So in this new Golden Age of television, we’re going to countdown the best time travelling TV series ever…

10. Goodnight Sweetheart

What list of time travel TV shows would be complete without this classic British comedy (was it a comedy? I can’t actually remember) set in Nineties London and the London of the Blitz?

Featuring Nicholas Lyndhurst breaking out from his role as the hapless Rodney from Only Fools and Horses to portray the hapless Gary Sparrow, Goodnight Sweetheart was a staple of British dinnertimes for six years. The show cleverly uses one of the most significant periods of recent British history to lend drama, romance and hilarity (I’m sure it was a comedy, right?) to the time travelling narrative. Sure it had an unexplained mode of time travel and sure it’s unclear whether it was a comedy, but this slice of 90s nostalgia is dear to any time traveller’s sweetheart.

What would happen if The X-Files were a bit better and a lot more fun? Controversial I know, but Fringe is exactly that.

There’s a lot of parallel universe hopping in Fringe with alternate universes, special names and major differences like the Twin Towers having been saved due to butterfly effect loopholes. However, time travel occurs less often but when it does it’s done beautifully with white tulips, wide-reaching revelations and Robocop himself, Peter Wier. The world of Fringe is full of the best sci-fi our screens have seen since The Twilight Zone and X-Files , both of which it owes a huge debt, and it’s for this reason and the fact that so much pseudo-science is used to explain it all that Fringe appears on this list.

8. Continuum

“2077. My time, my city, my family. When terrorists killed thousands of innocents, they were condemned to die. They had other plans.” What a way to open a TV show! Continuum wears its time travel premise confidently on its sleeve right from the first 30 seconds and it’s confidence is only matched by the creation of such a good time travel show.

The series treads the well-worn story of how events in the past can change the future but sneaks in some gripping twists and keen observations along the way. The Canadian series doesn’t have the depth of Fringe or the grit of Life on Mars but because of its continuously entertaining episodes and dramatic time travel narrative it earns a place on any time travel TV show list.

7. Samurai Jack

What would you do if you were being flung across time for aeons by an evil shape-shifting Master of Darkness named Aku? Train your body and mind to become the best Samurai ever in order to defeat him of course!

Using time travel as a way to allow a character to continually better themselves as a warrior and a person is genius enough but when it’s coupled with Genndy Tartakovsky’s stunning artwork, you achieve Zen-like qualities. We could all do with a bit more time to train our bodies and minds, maybe then we’d all be able to create art like Samurai Jack … or maybe not.

6. Life On Mars

One of the most interesting and dramatically engaging series on this list, Life on Mars blends flared corduroys, detectives and a golden MKIII Ford Cortina to create something very special.

The show, starring a never better John Simm, never gets bogged down in its time travel premise instead letting deep sci-fi themes and spot-on police procedural plots do the talking. After being hit by a car in 2006, DCI Sam Tyler (Simm) wakes up in 1973 to a world of outdated politics and police corruption but he is never really certain if he’s travelled back in time or is just going crazy. Any show named after a David Bowie song deserves its place here so here’s a quick mention to Life on Mars ‘ sequel too, Ashes to Ashes .

5. Outlander

Travelling back in time to a relatively unknown period of history featured rarely in film or TV, Outlander immerses you in a world Jacobite wars, highland romances and kilts, lots of kilts.

The newest entry on this list, the series tells the story of Claire Randall ( Caitriona Balfe – Super 8 , Now You See Me ), who is transported from World War Two back to the time of the House of Stuart in Scotland. Using the stunning Scottish highlands, this series features some of the most beautiful scenery ever seen on the small screen which you truly do believe are from 1743. For this reason alone, Outlander makes number five in our top time travel TV shows list.

4. Primeval

Dinosaurs in Dublin, Wooly Mammoths on the M25 and a Tyrannosaurus Rex chomping central London. What else could it be but the inimitable ITV series, Primeval ?

For every HG Wells story there’s a Forgotten Time by Lorraine Beaumont, a camp stab at the genre in the face of more thoughtful fare. Primeval takes camp, B-movie trappings and runs with them so fast, it feels like they’re running from the dinosaurs themselves. It’s unintentionally hilarious, it features a thing called a ‘Future Shark’ and it stars Hannah from S Club 7. It’s going on this list whether you like it or not!

Sliders ! For people of a certain age this show conjures up vivid memories of Vern from Stand By Me jumping through the coolest looking wormholes CGI could produce in 1995. OK, so technically they’re ‘sliding’ into alternate universes but the premise of the show dealt with parts of our own history so we’ll allow it. Sliders allowed us to see the histories that never were, like a never-ending Summer of Love or Hillary Clinton as the President of the United States. The show had a great premise and a willing if slightly hammy cast and who wouldn’t want to go sliding with Gimli?

2. Doctor Who

Doctor Who has been careening about space for over 50 years now so it’s no surprise that the flagship BBC series is on this list.

It’s a wonder that writers of the show don’t have brain aneurysms with the Doctor’s convoluted backstory, cosmic characters and time travel on such an epic scale that every iteration appears to be on the verge of meeting themselves or being each other’s own wife! However, for its mind melting time travel over 50 years, for the fact that it’s still must-see viewing across the world and for its unwavering British charm, Doctor Who , we salute you!

1. Quantum Leap

When it comes to time travel, no other series can really come close to this beautiful, funny and sometimes heart-breaking series from the Eighties.

Quantum Leap comes top of the pile for a number of reasons; it features a lot of time travel it features history amidst the pseudo-science and has the best time travel computer with an ego, Ziggy. Oh, and SPOILERS , Sam ends up meeting God in the final episode in one of the most poignant and open-ended finales ever. For that reason alone, this series is the greatest time travel TV series of all time… Oh Boy!

This is a great list! I love the Korean drama Time Travel series. My favorites are Faith, Rooftop Prince, I love Lee Tae Ri, Signal and Tunnel.

Have you ever seen “Voyagers!”? It was like a predecessor to Quantum Leap and lasted 1 season on NBC. It stared one of the most beautiful men to ever grace television, the late Jon-Erik Hexum. He’s a roguish time-traveling pirate, Phineas Bogg, a Voyager that travels throughout time with a smart young boy and they have to fix moments where history’s gone wrong. It was a fun show. It’s definitely binge-worthy and Hexum was such a charming young actor. Although it was made with kids and education in mind, (Co-Produced by Scholastic) there’s plenty of romantic moments for Bogg!

He and Meeno Peluce (the boy, Jeffrey Jones) made a great team. I run a fansite and FB page for the series. You can watch it on Amazon Prime, and it’s currently free on NBC.com.

I own the series and I was heartbroken when Jon died. I recently bought the 30 episode tv show from the 60’s The Time Tunnel…. Now this was where most time travel shows spawned from. Especially Quantum Leap.

Nice list! Back to the Future made me a sucker for time travel plots. So would the cartoon count as one?

How can Outlander be #16?

You NEED TO READ – It clearly states that the shows are in No Particular Order!

You forgot ‘The Time tunnel’ – The first American time travel show

Goodnight Sweetheart is THE ultimate time travel show!

Maybe you guys can help me….. I’m looking for a series perhaps a movie….. not sure. only saw a piece of it and have been searching ever since. I even looked trough all the male actors to cross reference, nothing. It seem to involve time travel an attempt to shift history. Almost achieve the goal by manipulating the son of the leader – I know its horribly vague…. but he ends up speaking to his son. He explains the situation from a watchmakers point of view- His hobby is watchmaking….the comparison he draws between ‘leading’ or directing humans where they need to be is similar to the watchmaker making a clock. its been almost two years…. but so far no luck finding this series. Help 🙂

think you may be thinking of inception (link removed)

How could you not have Netflix’s Dark on this list?

I agree. Dark is a pretty good series (3 seasons on Netflix). It’s a German show so you have to up with English lip syncing, but once you get used to it, it’s a good show.

Absolutely the best time travel show ever made imo

It is on the list (#30).

12 Monkeys needs to be #1 … Pretty sure it’s the only show that properly does time travel and causality! Love it

Continuum seems to be right on the money as we see a few corporations [e.g., Amazon] displacing small business, and taking over government. Science Fiction frequently becomes Science.

Looks like Continuum is no longer on Amazon Prime (unless you want to buy it. Is it anywhere else?

It looks like it’s only available to buy on Digital and DVD/Blu-ray now.

Netflix’s DARK is the best Time Travel show ever made. Never believe anything else!

Timeslip UK kids show from 60`s predates all these and deals with past , future, global cooling(remember that) and cloning.

I’ve never heard of it! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

It’s a indian movie named Time

Brødrene Dal og Spektralsteinene and Brødrene Dal og Mysteriet om Karl XIIs Gamasjer both have time travel as a key element. I prefer the former but both are pretty well planned out, although only the latter seems to remember concequences.

Thanks for the recommendations! 🙂

I like some others am trying to find a “Time Travel” movie that’s kind of like “If Only” Where a mans’ wife (Possibly Girlfriend) is killed in an auto accident an he keeps traveling back to that time to make her avoid it. He finds every time that it is avoided she is killed in another way. After so many attempts he goes back and gets in the car with her and they both die. So sort of like “If Only “ and sort of like the first part of “The Time Machine”(2002). I think the movie time-line was between 1970 and 2000 only guessing. I didn’t see the start of the movie. Always wanted to see it but the same accident happens or is averted only to have a new death.

20 Best TV Shows About Time Travel

Timeless

If you could travel back and forth through time, where would you go? What would you do? Who would you talk to? Even better, if you were writing a book, making a movie, or working on a television show about time travel, what would you include? The best TV shows about time travel all feature characters who travel through time for various compelling (or even life-threatening) reasons. Maybe it's to prevent a coming apocalypse, maybe it's just to save one person's life. But if there's one thing they all have in common, it's that when traveling through time, small changes can have big effects. We all know the theory of the Butterfly Effect, right? How a butterfly can flap its wings at one point in time can cause a tornado days, weeks, or years later. As many of these characters learn, their time traveling changes the world. In fact, sometimes that's the point.

Now, there are some time travel and time travel-adjacent shows that didn't make this list. A fun romp like "Early Edition," for example, while utilizing a time-traveling newspaper and potentially a time-traveling cat, doesn't in and of itself feature a lot of time travel. Nevertheless, it's still a fun time travel show. Something like "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" is rooted in a time travel premise, but stays mostly in one time. With all that being said, in no particular order, here's a look at our picks for the best time travel shows on TV.

Quantum Leap

"Quantum Leap" stars Scott Bakula as Dr. Sam Beckett, a physicist who invents a way to travel through time. When the corporation funding his project threatens to shut it down, Sam uses himself as a guinea pig to test out the method. He finds himself thrown back in time, but in another person's body. The only other person aware of his 'leap" is a hologram of his colleague and best friend, Admiral Al Calavicci, played by Dean Stockwell. Al tells Sam that he must correct things that went wrong in the past before being allowed to leap back to his own time and own body and can only use the resources of the project's supercomputer, Ziggy.

With Sam leaping back and forth into different bodies at different times, the show was allowed to adopt a kind of procedural set up. New characters could guest star and Sam could save the day, have a fling, and learn something new each episode. The series ran on NBC from 1989-1993, so the most attention "Quantum Leap" has received in recent years is thanks to a mention in "Avengers: Endgame."  Despite being over 20 years old, it's still a cool time travel series worth checking out.

Speaking of series that are old, this one goes all the way back to the 1960s. "Doctor Who"  premiered on the BBC in 1963. The series follows the adventures of a Time Lord named "the Doctor," an alien being from the planet Gallifrey who travels through space and time through a craft called the Tardis, which is disguised as an old-fashioned British police call box.

The original series ran from '63 through 1989 and recast the Doctor every few years or so , using the premise that the character has multiple lives and can reincarnate himself into a number of physical bodies. The modern series was revived in 2005 and has starred Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, with Jodie Whitaker taking over in 2017 as the series' first female Doctor. Every Doctor has their own version of a companion, or companions , humans who follow the Doctor throughout space and time, solving problems, battling aliens, robots, or other science fiction, timey-wimey stuff . Now that the Doctor has regained another set of lives, who knows how long the series will go on. But fans see no problems with a never-ending stream of "Doctor Who."

If ever there was a time travel show that was canceled too soon, it's "Timeless." The sci-fi series stars Abigail Spencer as Lucy, a historian, Matt Lanter as Wyatt, a soldier, and Malcolm Barrett as Rufus, a scientist who make up a team trying to prevent a mysterious organization from altering the courses of history through time travel. The "Mothership," a time travel machine invented by Connor Mason, is stolen by Garcia Flynn, who then travels throughout history changing major events. But the team soon realizes that the villain they thought they were fighting is actually much larger and infiltrates the historical timeline in ways they never imagined. The best part about the show was that, instead of focusing on the usual historical subjects, it highlighted often forgotten people of color, women, and lesser-known historical figures, giving them their due and celebrating their contributions to society.

After one season on NBC, "Timeless" was canceled. But the intense fans, who call themselves "Clockblockers," caused such an uproar that NBC renewed the show for a second season only three days after initially canceling. At the end of season 2, NBC pulled the plug once again, and the Clockblockers cried foul. In a kind of compromise, NBC scheduled a two-hour Christmas series finale movie that tied up loose ends and gave much-needed closure to the story.

Based on the series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, Starz's "Outlander"  follows the story of a World War II nurse named Claire (Caitriona Balfe) who finds herself thrown back in time after visiting a circle of mysterious Druid stones. She arrives in 18th Century Scotland and, after being taken in by a band of gruff Scots, she marries the dashing young Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in order to avoid being taken prisoner by her real husband's evil ancestor, Black Jack Randall. Claire lives through a time of great upheaval in Scotland when tensions with the British control are rising and history-making battles loom in the near future. Despite being initially reluctant to stay, she and Jamie fall deeply in love, and their romance remains the backbone of the series.

Claire stays in the past for some time, but soon travels back to the future and is reunited with her first husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies) and gives birth to her and Jamie's daughter, Brianna, in the 1940s. But as Brianna grows, and learns the truth about her mother's past, her biological father's identity, and her own time travel abilities, Claire, Brianna, and Brianna's paramour Roger all soon travel back to the 18th century to reunite with Jamie. The Fraser family settles in North Carolina a few years before the breakout of the American Revolutionary War, and being that they know what's coming, they find themselves in a pickle.

When the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 crash land on a deserted island, wacky and scary things begin to happen. If you watched "Lost"  back when it aired, you know that the sci-fi drama dealt with flashbacks, flash-forwards, indigenous "others," a mysterious group called the Dharma Initiative, a black smoke monster, and an ancient battle between good and evil. Lost was one of those primetime giants that aired right before streaming services became big, so it was appointment television every week, with fans talking about it and theorizing about its mysteries the next day.

This ABC drama captivated viewers for six seasons, and though time travel was referenced throughout the entire series run, it was really season 4 where time travel played a big part. As the island itself jumps from place to place and from time to time, the main group of characters jumps with it, encountering previous versions of themselves, island events that occurred in the past, and suffering from the effects of temporal displacement. The most beloved episode dealing with time travel is no doubt "The Constant," the episode in which fan favorite Desmond Hume figured out a way to stop his consciousness from jumping through time by finding his constant, his love Penny.

Based on the novel "11/22/63" by Stephen King , this eight-episode series follows a man named Jake Epping (James Franco), a relatively normal guy who is given the chance to change history. As a recently divorced English teacher, Jake doesn't see much excitement, but when his friend Al (Chris Cooper) tells him he's found a way to travel back in time, his life is turned upside down. Al tells Jake that the portal he's discovered goes back to the year 1960 and that he's been working on a plan to stop the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Al's age and advancing cancer diagnosis prevent him from following through on the plan, however, and he asks Jake to take over for him. Jake agrees, though his quest is met with pushback, but from who? As Al explains, the past doesn't want to be changed, and every step he takes toward preventing JFK's assassination leads to more cracks in the timeline.

Save the cheerleader, save the world. That's what future Hiro Nakamura told present-day Hiro Nakamura when he appeared to him from the future. This NBC series followed a group of regular old people who develop special powers, not unlike mutants in the "X-Men" series, after a mysterious worldwide eclipse. Each character gains their own individual abilities. Claire Bennet (Hayden Panettiere) develops the ability to heal from any injury. Senator Nathan Petrelli gains the ability to fly, while his brother Peter (Mil Ventimiglia) can temporarily absorb others' powers.

Hiro's ability to bend space and time, travel into the past and the future, and teleport basically anywhere on the planet, becomes a serious asset throughout the run of the series. But it takes a while for Hiro to perfect his own abilities. The first few times he travels through time don't go as planned, and throughout the series, things can get in the way of him ending up where he wants to go or when he wants to be. Even so, Hiro's time traveling became one of the highlights of "Heroes,"  especially since Masi Oka was so darn charming as the character.

In the opening scenes of "The 4400," an enormous ball of light drops 4400 people at the foot of Mount Rainier in Washington. They soon realize that they were all taken from some other point in time, kidnapped from their own year, beginning in 1946, and deposited into 2004 unaged and without their memories of where they'd been. At first, the 4400 and the rest of the general population believe that they'd been abducted by aliens and all returned to a singular point in time. But the 4400 soon learn that it wasn't aliens who took them from their own times, it was humans from Earth's future who took them.

Soon after returning, the 4400 start developing powers, not unlike the heroes of "Heroes." Some have telekinesis, some have telepathy, some have super-strength. The humans from the future sent them back with these abilities to prevent catastrophic events that they want to avoid in their time. The government, however, views them differently and inhibits their powers with a neurological drug. As the 4400 dissipate, some form terrorist groups, some reject their powers, and some work toward the future humans' goals. "The 4400" ended abruptly after four seasons and left on a somewhat ambiguous note, but it's a fun show to revisit.

In Netflix's "Travelers," time-traveling operatives from a post-apocalyptic future are tasked with preventing certain events that lead to the downfall of society. The series stars Eric McCormack, Mackenzie Porter, Jared Abrahamson, Nesta Cooper, Reilly Dolman, and Patrick Gilmore, though there are thousands of other Travelers in the show's current time of 2018. The travelers have their consciousness sent back in time and into the body of a person who was moments before their death. The operative then lives out the rest of that person's life though with a mission always in mind. The rules are as follows: 1. The mission comes first. 2. Leave the future in the past. 3.Don't take a life; don't save a life, unless otherwise directed. Do not interfere. 4. Do not reproduce. 5. In the absence of direction, maintain your host's life. 6. Do not communicate with other known travelers outside of your team unless sanctioned by the Director.

The Director is an unseen entity from the future who controls all missions and speaks to the Travelers through messengers in the form of children. Unlike adults, children can safely be taken over by the Director from the future for a few minutes without being harmed. But naturally, not all Travelers follow the rules, and while the crux of the series leans on a group of people trying to prevent disasters, many of them veer off course and make their own plans.

"Continuum" is best explained by the main character Keira Cameron's voiceover narration, which says: "2077. My time, my city, my family. When terrorists killed thousands of innocents, they were condemned to die. They had other plans. A time travel device sent us all back 65 years. I want to get home, but I can't be sure what I will return to if history is changed. Their plan: To corrupt and control the present in order to win the future. What they didn't plan on was me."

When Keria, a City Protective Services (CPS) law enforcement officer for the corporatocratic, oligarchic dystopia of the North American Union and its Corporate Congress, discovers that self-described freedom fighters calling themselves Liber8 have escaped execution by traveling to the year 2012, she is inadvertently sucked back in time with them. Keira must capture the eight escapees before they alter the future permanently and prevent her from returning to her own time.

This SyFy series was based on the 1995 film of the same name that starred Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, though the series itself changed quite a bit in order to stretch the plot into a four-season sci-fi drama. The series stars Aaron Sanford as James Cole, a scavenger who, in 2043, is tasked which traveling back to the year 2015 to stop the release of a biological weapon. So far that's pretty much the premise of the movie, but here's where the show differs. In the movie, James is helped by a psychologist named Kathryn Railly played by Madeleine Stowe, but in the series, James befriends a virologist named Dr. Cassandra "Cassie" Railly (Amanda Schull). Pitt's character, Jeffrey Goines, is also gender-swapped here, with Emily Hampshire playing Jennifer Goines.

Like the movie, the series deals with the Cassandra Complex, the idea that future events can already be known to us but that we have a hard time believing them. It also deals with circular time and the idea that past events can be affected by future events, as is seen in the backward phone messages that lead to James being sent back in time in the first place in the movie. If those aspects of the film really lifted your time travel antennae, the show, which spanned four seasons, dives even deeper.

"Fringe" isn't just about time travel, it's about a science-fiction conglomerate that incorporates inter-dimensional travel, wormholes, alternate realities, and Observers from the future. Anna Torv stars as FBI Agent Olivia Dunham who heads up the bureau's Fringe Division. With the help of "mad scientist" Dr. Walter Biship (John Noble), his estranged son Peter (Joshua Jackson), and their lab assistant Astrid Farnsworth (Jakisa Nicole), the team explores cases involving fringe science, be they about time travel, mind control, experiments gone wrong or any other strange and obscure criminal activity.

Like "Lost," time travel is kind of a looming presence early in "Fringe," particularly present in the character of "The Observer" (Michael Cerveris), a bald, pale genetically advanced human from the future. While seasons one and two deal with the battle between two dimensions and two realities, time travel really becomes an element in season 3. Seasons 4 and 5 then deal with alternate timelines and the Observers that infiltrate the world from the future, intent on wiping out humanity. The show is confusing as hell, but it sure is fun.

Russian Doll

"Russian Doll" could be pitched as "Natasha Lyonne's 'Groundhog Day,'" but that still wouldn't hint at half of the show's charm and emotion. This Netflix offering is a mind-bending time loop dramedy that's a stylish and surreal exploration of life, death, and all the trauma in between. The first season of "Russian Doll" features Nadia (Lyonne) stuck reliving her 36th birthday until she inevitably dies and resets back to her friend's bathroom. Later in the season, she discovers a fellow time traveler (Charlie Barnett). They quickly realize that the way out of their dead ends and into a new life is through helping each other.

The second season takes some departures from the recursive reality set up in the first season, bending the minds of viewers more thoroughly. "Russian Doll" goes deep, but keeps a sense of humor even as it twists the knife in its characters' hearts — and their timelines. The show keeps audiences just oriented enough by linking "deranged loops" to recognizable spaces and sound cues. You will never look at the subway the same way again, and you will probably never get Harry Nilsson's "Gotta Get Up" out of your head.

The Umbrella Academy

You have got to respect a show that is so high-concept that "time travel" doesn't even get top billing. "The Umbrella Academy" boasts a ghost, a ghost whisperer, super-strength, and robot moms, and that's just scratching the surface. Based on the comics created by Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance fame, "The Umbrella Academy" is a superhero-ish saga that exploits both the butterfly effect and the grandfather paradox for emotional and comedic impact.

The "Umbrella" family is made up of a group of kids all born on the same day, adopted by the same eccentric billionaire. They are trained to protect the world with their various superpowers, but they aren't exactly great at it. This dysfunctional bunch start out fairly estranged, slowly bond to save humanity from an apocalyptic event, only to cause another possible apocalyptic event by sprinkling themselves across time.

In between the tears in the space-time continuum, "The Umbrella Academy" is ultimately an ensemble story about found (and re-found) family. Disconnected siblings learn how to understand each other so they can save the world from bad guys (and themselves) over and over again.

Paper Girls

"Paper Girls" is a brilliant time travel show canceled way ahead of its time. Based on the comics by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang, this Amazon series tells the story of a group of '90s tween girls who get attacked by futuristic invaders. They manage to escape into the future, where one of the girls, Erin, meets her adult self, played by Ali Wong.

The show dispenses with grandfather paradox hand wringing and instead uses the concept of the girls confronting their past and future selves to brutally honest and hilarious effect. Young Erin is horrified to find out how much of herself she's abandoned by the time she turns into Old Erin, and she refuses to let life work out that way. It motivates Erin to want to return to her home time even more — this kid has a clock to beat.

Old Erin is also able to care for her young self in ways she never felt able to when she was Young Erin. It's a beautiful and potent visual metaphor that other characters also make good on. This show is a feast for the eyes as much as its ensemble is a feast for the soul. Plus, Jason Mantzoukas ("The League") playfully chewing scenery as the ominous Grand Father? This show could have lasted until the end of time — or at least until Season 2.

Timewasters

"Timewasters" is a time-travel comedy about a Black British jazz band that accidentally time-slips back to 1920s London, among other timelines. The quartet stumbles into the past via a disgusting elevator that doubles as a time machine. Once the crew shows up in the past, they're treated like freaks, but they gain some measure of success as musicians. While the crew eventually return to the present, they also have their "Back to the Future" moment when they seemingly get stuck in the 1950s.

"Timewasters" is full of funny jokes and great music, and it's a groundbreaking show in a number of ways. "People like us never get to time travel — it's what white people do, like skiing or brunch," creator Daniel Lawrence Taylor told the Royal Television Society . "For me, race is so important." Taylor stars in "Timewasters," which also features Kadiff Karwan ("Slow Horses"), Adelayo Adedayo ("Some Girls"), and Samson Kayo ("Our Flag Means Death"). The show even features cameos from a variety of British comedians, as well as Joseph Quinn (Eddie Munson) from "Stranger Things."

The god of mischief meets his match when he comes up against the Time Variance Authority and multiversal versions of himself in Marvel's "Loki." While the branching timeline the TVA is so obsessed with scrubbing clean (and how it matches up with the mechanics of time travel in other Marvel tales) is a bit fuzzy, precision isn't the point here — it's the idea of playfulness versus control.

Nowadays, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is known for assisting his brother Thor at key moments and behaving slightly better than he did in the early days of the MCU. When Loki is taken to time jail after the TVA deems him a "variant," he is given an opportunity to face down the truth of his horrific past — and change his future. Loki's very human moment of self-reckoning is at the heart of a series that is deliciously stylish, silly, and sometimes scary.

Directed with a sense of humor and adventure by Kate Herron, "Loki" takes a cops-and-robbers crime caper into time-travel territory and manages to explore hefty themes with a light touch, including mindless compliance to self-serving overseers and criminalizing anyone deemed "variant." There's also lots of rat-a-tat banter between Loki and Owen Wilson's Mobius, a love affair with Lady Loki, and, of course, the best Loki of all, Alligator Loki.

Four families weave a tangled web of time travel in "Dark," a German-language psycho thriller about missing kids, a rotten town, and how almost all of our secrets come out in time. If you're looking for the wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey, feel-good side of time travel TV, you best look elsewhere.

"Dark" follows its many characters over the course of their lifetimes and has, at one point, three timelines going at once. Part of the intrigue and challenge of watching the show is trying to understand how (and when) each timeline threads into the other. If you decide to watch it, you best get your yarn boards ready to chart the relationships and betrayals taking place across time in the town of Winden.

While "Dark" is as much a show about human connection and how frayed it can become as it is about time travel, it wins MVP for using so many time travel paradoxes in its three-season run. "Dark" is also an innovator in the field of wormhole placement. Wormholes are already not to be trusted, but a wormhole underneath a nuclear power plant? No thank you.

Beforeigners

What happens when a bunch of Viking-era warriors, nineteenth-century figures, and Stone Age people pop up in modern-day Oslo? "Beforeigners" attempts to answer that question while navigating twisty murder mysteries — this Norwegian series may be best described as "crime travel." It focuses more on the present-day collaboration between the time refugees and their modern counterparts than on how or why they showed up in the first place.

"Beforeigners" centers around the odd-couple dynamic duo partnership between hardened police detective Lars Haaland (Nicolai Cleve Broch) and eager new Viking police recruit Alfhildr Enginsdottir (Krista Kosonen) as they investigate the murder of a Stone Age victim. They even look into crimes with possible ties to Jack the Ripper.

The metaphor of time migration is an apt one for immigration, and this sci-fi show explores tricky real-life issues with plenty of scope. Creators Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin got their start in comedy writing, and their humor and commitment to all bits is evident in the show, including the language used. The pair "constructed the language that Stone Age people spoke, and even with the language from the 19th century: We worked on it to make it sound right," Bjørnstad told Variety . "Why not invest in language, which is such a big part of a person's identity?"

"Sliders" is a '90s sci-fi adventure series that features Jerry O'Connell and friends getting lost across the multiverse. O'Connell ("Stand By Me") plays boy genius Quinn Mallory, inventor of "the timer" — a device that lets him and his friends "slide" through a wormhole vortex into different versions of Earth. The thing about wormhole vortexes, though, is that they like to misbehave, meaning Quinn and his buds never know where they're headed next on their adventures. This makes their quest to get back home to "Earth Prime" a tricky one.

While the show gets flak for falling apart in its final seasons, "Sliders" starts off fun and strong. It's at its best when having bonkers fun (like when Rembrandt discovers a world where he could have been Elvis-level famous) and when it's exploring real-world issues in a high-concept dimension (like when the crew visits an Earth that treats men worse than women). Even if you've seen it before, it's definitely worth a re-watch, because  "Sliders" is better than you remember.

15 Time Travel TV shows: past, present and future

quantum-leap

Time travel has been a television mainstay for at least fifty years and has, appropriately enough, gone through the decades (sometimes) growing more sophisticated along the way. There have been at least fifty such shows, but Empire has distilled them to a sampling of fifteen that span from 1963 ( Doctor Who ) to 2017 ( Time After Time ).

doctor-who

1963-1989, 2005-08, 2010-15, Specials Airing between 2005 and 2016

If you’re thinking of traveling through time, best utilize a TARDIS, the safest way to move through the ages, and certainly a lot more reliable than, say, a souped-up DeLorean. After all, the Doctor and his various companions have been using it for over half a century, much to the delight of generations of viewers. And part of the genius of the show is the fact that the Doctor can regenerate, so when an actor decides he wants to move on (or even if he demands too much of a raise), it’s easy enough to explain why someone else is playing the role. Doctor Who remains the longest-running time travel series, initially spanning twenty-six straight seasons between 1963 and 1989, and resurrected in 2005 for an all-new ten-plus-year run. Additionally, it’s spawned almost as many series spin-offs as Star Trek : Torchwood (2006-2011), The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007-2011), K-9 (2009-2010) and this year’s Class .

It’s About Time

its-about-time

Gilligan’s Island creator Sherwood Schwartz came up with this little “gem” about a pair of astronauts whose space capsule travels back to prehistoric times, where they begin interacting with a cave family, getting involved in one wacky adventure after another (some involving stop motion dinosaurs). The premise quickly ran out of steam and was retooled mid-season to have the astronauts return to the 20th Century, cave family in tow, thus thrusting them into their own wacky adventures. Trust us when we say the theme song (below) was more entertaining than the show.

The Time Tunnel

time-tunnel

Producer Irwin Allen ruled much of the sci-fi airwaves throughout the 1960s with shows like Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea , Lost In Space , Land Of The Giants and this show, The Time Tunnel . The premise is kind of cool: Project Tic-Toc (okay, that part definitely diminishes much of the cool) has developed an experimental time machine (which remains a great visual) in which Dr. Douglas Philips (Robert Colbert) and Dr. Anthony Newman (James Darren — hey, Vic Fontaine from Deep Space Nine !) enter, and are plunged through time. The Tic-Toc team (okay, it’s sounding sillier by the minute) are able to communicate with them in the different eras they arrive in, and attempts to pull them back to the present but send them instead to different periods in history. But, hey, these guys with knowledge of the future can actually influence history, can’t they? Unfortunately, they frequently get this close before being yanked back into the time stream. The pilot for a new series was produced in 2002, but never went forward.

Quantum Leap

Oh go ahead, bitch and complain that Scott Bakula wasn’t your idea of a starship captain on Star Trek: Enterprise , but there’s a reason the actor was chosen for the part, and much of it had to do with what he brought to Quantum Leap . The premise for the series is that physicist Sam Beckett (Bakula) is performing experiments in time travel when he finds himself traveling backwards in time where he “leaps” into the bodies of different people and takes their place to, as the opening narration proclaims, “make right what once went wrong.” To the audience, those people look like Bakula, but to everyone else — as revealed whenever he looks into a mirror — he looks like the person whose body he is in control of. This was not a big effects show, but instead a more intimate drama with plenty of humor, and a genuine opportunity for Bakula to showcase his acting skills as he became different men, women, a mentally challenged youth and even a chimpanzee . Dean Stockwell co-stars as Admiral Al Calavicci, who appears to Sam as a hologram.

Tru Calling

tru-calling

Having had her fill of slaying vampires, and actually turning down the potential to star in a spin-off series featuring her Buffy character of Faith, Eliza Dushku moved on to this show, which had a unique procedural time-travel twist. She plays Tru Davies, a medical student by day who, following the collapse of her internship, takes a job at the city morgue where bodies that are brought in start to open their eyes, look in her direction and utter the words, “Help me.” This projects her back to the beginning of the day (which sucks if you're having a particularly good day), providing the opportunity for her to either stop or solve the crime. The show’s mythology expanded to include another time traveler ( Jason Priestley ) who is determined to put the timeline back on its natural course and stop Tru. Zack Galifianakis co-stars as Davis, her employer at the morgue. Definitely underrated.

Life On Mars

life-on-mars-uk

You’ve got to applaud any time travel shows that bring with them a unique twist (no, seriously, you have to applaud. Thank you). After being struck by a car in 2006, policeman Sam Tyler ( John Simm ) awakens in 1973, working for the Manchester And Sealford Police in the same building where he works for the Greater Manchester Police in the future. What follows is Sam’s attempts to use his expertise in crimefighting from the future to apply to crimes of the era, and the conflicts that arise from interactions with commanding officer Gene Hunt ( Philip Glenister ),who obviously feels that Sam doesn’t know as much as he thinks he does. The big question hanging over the show is whether all of this is real, or if Sam is actually lying in a coma in 2006. Impressively, the show spawned the spin-off Ashes To Ashes , focusing on the Hunt character; a 2006 American version with Jason O’Mara as Sam, a Spanish version named La Chicade Ayer , which translates to The Girl From Yesterday ; and a Russian version under the title The Dark Side Of The Moon .

continuum

Rachel Nichols (she was the green Orion Starfleet cadet, and Uhura’s promiscuous roommate, in 2009’s Star Trek ) is City Protective Services officer Kiera Cameron, who is inadvertently brought back in time from 2077 to the present with a group of “terrorists”. Their goal: to stop future corporations from taking the place of the government, and hers is to prevent them from changing history and potentially wiping her family in 2077 out of existence. A well crafted series bringing together action and sci-fi concepts with intelligence.

outlander

Quite literally a love that spans the ages, married World War II nurse Clare Randall ( Caitriona Balfe ) is mysteriously transported from 1945 to 1743 Scotland. There she is forced to start a whole new life, and connects with Jamie Fraser ( Sam Heughan ), a Highland warrior. What follows is their growing relationship as Clare struggles to survive in a far harsher time than her own, as the two of them become a part in, and try to influence, the Jacobite risings. The show is based on the bestsellers by Diana Galbaldon, and the showrunner is Battlestar Galactica ’s Ron Moore .

12-monkeys

What’s it’s not is a gathering of a dozen denizens of the Planet Of The Apes. What it is , is the television version of Terry Gilliam’s 1995 film, utilizing the strength of the medium to expand and elaborate on the premise. Aaron Stanford is James Cole, who has traveled to the present from 2043 to try and stop The Army Of The Twelve Monkeys from unleashing a virus that is destined to wipe out nearly ninety-four percent of humanity. Things begin with him collaborating with virologist Cassandra Railly ( Amanda Schull ) and psychologically challenged math genius Jennifer Goines (Emily Hampshire) and expand from there, with the team moving on to different eras in their efforts to save the human race.

11-22-63

One of the fun time travel games to play is to ponder what you would change if you could actually go back to the past. Preventing the assassination of President John F. Kennedy ranks high on that list (though, personally, we’d show George Lucas reviews of the Prequel Trilogy before they went into production, but that’s us). That notion certainly intrigued Stephen King , the resulting novel of which was adapted into the Hulu series 11.22.63 . James Franco is English teacher Jake Epping, who is shown a portal in a diner that leads to Dallas, Texas circa 1960. Jake is begged by a close friend to use the portal to prevent the assassination of Kennedy, and is gradually convinced of the validity of the plan. What he does’t expect is to fall in love back in time, or the ramifications that saving Kennedy could have on history. Produced by King and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot.

DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow

legends-of-tomorrow

Born out of the success of Arrow and The Flash , this spinoff series focuses on a group of characters that travel through time, initially to stop immortal Vandal Savage from taking over the world in the future, and then to serve as time cops (no relation to Jean Claude van Damme ) to police the space-time continuum. Characters include The Atom ( Brandon Routh ), Firestorm ( Victor Garber and Franz Drameh ), White Canary ( Caity Lotz ) and Heat Wave ( Dominic Purcell ), among others. A sporadically successful first season has led to far more solid footing in season two.

timeless

Ah, nothing like a good old-fashioned pursuit through time! There’s the bad guy who’s stolen the time machine “mothership” ( Goran Visnjic’s Garcia Flynn), intent on destroying history; and the team (Abigail Spencer’s Lucy Preston, a history professor; Matt Lanter’s Master Sergeant Wyatt Logan, a soldier; and Malcolm Barrett’s Rufus Carlin, an engineer) determined to stop him in a prototype device. So far they’ve dealt with the Hindenburg, the assassination of President Lincoln, Nazis (what’s a time travel series without Nazis?) and the Alamo, among others. Creators are Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan .

frequency

Based on the 2000 film, this story has gone through a sex change with Jim Caviezel’s John Sullivan being replaced by Peyton List’s Raimy Sullivan. Coming across the old ham radio of her deceased father ( Dennis Quaid then, Riley Smith now), Raimy finds that she can actually communicate with him before he died some twenty years earlier. Seeing this as an opportunity to save his life — he was an undercover New York detective killed in the line of duty — she inadvertently triggers a butterfly effect, they key to which seems to be within an unsolved murder case that they have to work together over time to solve.

Making History

making-history

In what seems like a throwback silly time travel show (see It’s About Time above — okay, maybe not that silly), a college professor (Adam Pally) creates a time machine that he hopes can be used to improve both his life and that of a fellow teacher (Yassir Lester). But things go awry when one of them starts dating Paul Revere’s daughter, Deborah ( Leighton Meester ), threatening all of American history. Exec producers are Lego Movie maestros Phil Lord and Chris Miller . The series has not been given a 2017 debut date yet.

Time After Time

time-after-time

Based on the 1979 Karl Alexander novel and Nicholas Meyer film, this show, debuting in 2017, begins in Victorian England when John Stevenson/Jack The Ripper (Josh Bowman) steals a time machine created by author H.G. Wells ( Freddie Stroma ) and travels to the present. Wells follows him there intent on returning him to justice, and gets involved in a series of adventures that will reportedly prove inspiring to Wells in the writing of his other novels. The series is developed by Kevin Williamson ( The Vampire Diaries , The Following ).

Time travel has been on television since the The Twilight Zone ’s 1958 original pilot episode, “The Time Element,” visited Pearl Harbor in 1941 (airing under Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse ) and the Enterprise was hurled back to 1960s Earth in 1967 Star Trek episode “Tomorrow Is Yesterday.” Many shows devoted their entire premise to time travel, one of the best of which is the 1989–1993 NBC drama Quantum Leap . Every week, Sam Beckett would leap into a different year to right a cosmic wrong. Quantum Leap returned in September 2022 focusing on a new character, Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee). Eight season 1 episodes are now streaming on Peacock, and the show returns to NBC on January 2 to continue its weekly adventures.

The new  Quantum Leap and 2022 series The Peripheral and Paper Girls join our list of time-travel television ranked by Tomatometer. The list includes classics like Doctor Who and its time-traveling TARDIS, Lost with its time-warped island, and Outlander ’s romance epic whose characters skip through centuries. The Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles TV show brought killer robots and new freedom fighters back from the future, 1 2 Monkeys expanded its time loop on television, Back to the Future got an animated series of the adventures of Doc Brown, and even Timecop got a short-lived syndicated series.

More recently, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow was all about keeping time safe, NBC’s La Brea sent modern families to 10,000 B.C., and Russian Doll went from a Groundhog Day time loop to a subway back to 1982. Fan favorites like Timeless and Manifest and short-lived wonders like Journeyman and Day Break are also worth a look.

The Time Traveler’s Wife Already Has A UK Network

Rose Leslie & Theo James will appear in HBO’s eight-part adaptation of the book.

Rose Leslie & Theo James will appear in HBO’s eight-part adaptation of 'The Time Traveler's Wife'.

The Time Traveler’s Wife has been given the TV treatment, with a new series heading for HBO Max in 2022. Like the 2009 film starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, this show will be based on Audrey Niffenegger’s globally successful book. Fans are keen to see the romance novel come alive once again, but how can you watch The Time Traveller’s Wife HBO Series in the UK?

The good thing is that The Time Traveler’s Wife already has a home here in the UK; it will be airing on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV. However, sadly, we don’t yet have an exact air date. All we know if that it will air sometime in 2022, with filming having wrapped in May this year .

So, while viewers wait for an announcement about the air date, let’s look at what we do know so far about The Time Traveler’s Wife.

The new series will star Game of Thrones’ Rose Leslie as Clare and Theo James as Henry. James – who viewers may know from Sanditon or (for the less high brow among us) The Inbetweeners Movie – looks totally unrecognisable with long, curly hair in this show. A first-look image shows the pair laughing together surrounded by books and candles.

HBO has employed some big names in sci fi and fantasy film-making to make the series, which will be executive produced by Doctor Who ’s Steven Moffat. However, for those expecting a Doctor Who sci-fi feel for The Time Traveller’s Wife series, Moffat clarified for Entertainment Weekly that the series will bear “no resemblance to anything [he’s] done in terms of time travel before.”

“This is a story of loss but it’s not a tragedy. It's about a time traveler but it’s not science fiction. Despite Clare and Henry’s time scrambled relationship, this is the tale of a grand, ordinary love – but not necessarily in that order,” said Moffat, who added, “This is a dream project for me. I have always loved Audrey Niffenegger’s extraordinary, moving novel and it has inspired me many times, so to be adapting it for television is the thrill of a lifetime.”

The Time Traveler’s Wife will be available on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in 2022.

5 Time Travel TV Shows That Were Easy to Follow (& 5 That Were Very Confusing)

T ime travel has been a gripping fascination for theorists, speculative fiction novelists, and filmmakers. The idea to correct the past, be it a minute moment of embarrassment or altering the trajectory of history, has long inspired discourse and given rise to some of the most prolific franchises in the media. Recent examples offer compelling stories, but tend to bend towards being either easily comprehensible or utterly confusing.

Embedding time travel into romance, drama, and mystery stories, these TV shows may range in quality, but use time travel for interesting and effective plots. As such, here are five time travel series that are easy to follow, and five that are really confusing.

Easy to Follow: Outlander (2014-Present)

Release Date 2014-08-09

Cast Caitriona Balfe

Main Genre Action

Studio Starz

Outlander finds World War II nurse Claire Randall (Caitríona Balfe) thrust back in time, landing in the year 1743. There, she finds and aligns herself with a clan of Scottish Highlanders and is embroiled in a heated affair with Jamie Fraiser ( played by Sam Heughan ), the leader of the clan in question. Navigating murky waters poisoned with political strife and deceit, Claire finds herself bending history towards her will.

What Makes Outlander Easy to Follow

Be it the Revolutionary War or the Jacobite movement, Claire's personal time travel journey and the allies she makes along the way are easy to follow. The vivid scenery is impossible to ignore and yet, it acts as a supplement to the rich story of love, conflict, and intrigue. Due to the imaginative nature of the series alongside charismatic characters, Outlander is not only easy to get into, but also quite rewarding for fans of history, drama, and romance. Confusing: The Time Travelers’ Wife (2022)

Read Our Review

The Time Traveler's Wife tracks the complications between Clare Abshire (Rose Leslie) and her time-traveling husband Henry (Theo James). Born with a genetic disorder, Henry frequently pops in and out of the present, embarking on his own adventures. Throughout the HBO limited series, many scenes provide additional insight into how time complicates their love, with the two approaching one another at different points in their lives, literally.

What Makes The Time Traveler's Wife Confusing

Henry and Claire approach each other at various moments in their respective lives. While some have attributed said confusion to Henry's ability to time travel, others have pointed to the direction of the series as a reason behind the puzzling aspects of the series. Given the difference in ages, the appearance of duplicate characters, and their various motives, The Time Traveler's Wife can be a bewildering experience to follow. Stream on Max

Easy to Follow: DC Legends of Tomorrow (2016-2022)

Dc's legends of tomorrow.

Release Date 2016-01-21

Main Genre Superhero

Franchise DC

DC's Legends of Tomorrow is one of many programs part of The CW's Arrowverse . Following a group of familiar heroes from the franchise, the series begins with Time Master Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) galvanizing heroes like "The Atom" (Brandon Routh) and "White Canary" (Caity Lotz) to help quell the efforts of vile villains like dictator Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) and Reverse-Flash (Matt Letscher).

What Makes DC's Legends of Tomorrow Easy to Follow

Given the fame of the DC franchise, many of the characters present already feel familiar to the intended audience. Furthermore, the series follows an understandable formula that blends a mission contained in one episode and an overarching time travel storyline that binds the trajectory of the characters' growth as the series progresses. Confusing: Russian Doll (2019-2022)

Russian doll.

Release Date 2019-00-00

Cast Greta Lee, Natasha Lyonne

Main Genre Sci-Fi

Read Our Season 2 Review

Many have been confronted with the concept of being stuck in a time loop. Russian Doll takes the idea and creates a comical yet intriguing narrative out of it. The Netflix series follows Nadia (Natasha Lyonne), a game developer who quickly realizes she is trapped in a monotonous cycle of death and reanimation. Finding solace in characters like Alan (Charlie Barnett), Nadia soon finds herself in the midst of a seemingly inescapable time conundrum.

What Makes Russian Doll Confusing

The series' striking aesthetics and comedic beat set it apart from other time travel series. Moreover, the mystery at hand is truly baffling, with the metaphysical masters of time keeping Nadia (and, by extension, audiences) on her toes. The confusing nature of time's tricks makes Russian Doll difficult to follow at times, as it juggles amusing plots with intriguing character developments, but, if you stick with it, results in a wholly captivating series. Easy to Follow: Paper Girls (2022)

Paper girls.

Few hours after 1988 Halloween night, four 12-year old girls have to face a mission. Trapped in a complicated conflict, they will travel in time to save the world.

Release Date 2021-03-07

Cast Fina Strazza, Sofia Rosinsky, Adina Porter

Genres Drama, Horror, Fantasy

Paper Girls follows a group of teenage girls who inadvertently become embroiled in a time war between various factions. With knowledge of said conflict, the girls attempt to rectify the harm of the factions, but come across future events, conflicting versions of themselves, and threatening opponents that ultimately change the girls' perception of life and time.

What Makes Paper Girls Easy to Follow

Despite the engaging and ambitious plots, Paper Girls can be difficult to follow given the multiple versions of the main characters present and the lore behind the war in question. However, as the series persists, the strong acting and multi-layered narratives will surely impress anyone looking for a refreshing tale about girlhood and time travel. Stream on Prime Video

Confusing: 12 Monkeys (2015-2018)

12 Monkeys sees the 1995 film of the same name adapted for a television format. Banding together to stop an ominous organization from wreaking havoc, a group of strangers from the year 2043 embarks on an adventure through time. Threatening to unleash a deadly virus onto the population, the fear propagated by the organization's aims sits at the center of the calamity seen in the series and largely influences the characters' decisions and motives.

What Makes 12 Monkeys Confusing

The series has a dense yet enamoring time travel storyline as audiences follow multiple characters' POV like James (Aaron Stanford) and Cassie (Amanda Schull). Despite its original source material being similarly structured as a fictional web of secrets and lies, 12 Monkeys goes the distance and delivers a puzzling exploration of destiny and free will. Stream on Hulu

Easy to Follow: The Lazarus Project (2022-Present)

The Lazarus Project is a sci-fi thriller that follows George (Paapa Essiedu), a man who seemingly returns to the morning of July 1 every six months. After noticing everyone's indifference to the strange time loop, George seeks out to find the truth and comes across the titular organization that enlightens him about his predicament.

What Makes The Lazarus Project Easy to Follow

Despite the show's experimentation with time, The Lazarus Project is easy to follow. With strong performances from Essiedu and Anjli Mohindra, the riveting investigation into George's peculiar powers grows into a fascinating, technology-fueled conflict between ominous organizations rich with context and the characters implicated in the burgeoning friction. Stream on TNT

Confusing: Doctor Who (2005-Present)

Release Date 2005-03-26

Cast Christopher Eccleston, Peter Capaldi, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Ncuti Gatwa, Catherine Tate, Jodie Whittaker, Jemma Redgrave

Studio BBC America

Doctor Who is easily one of the most exciting and recognizable pieces of science fiction available to audiences everywhere. Revived in 2005, the series includes a bevy of talented actors like Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and now, Ncuti Gatwa portraying the role of The Doctor . Following a charming protagonist from the extinct planet Gallifrey, the series chronicles the Doctor's adventures through time and space with a band of loyal companions, who also embark on a personal metamorphosis.

What Makes Doctor Who Confusing

Due to the length of the series, Doctor Who contains decades of imperative lore that helps inform many of the series' moving parts, past and present. From the Daleks to the Empty Child, many factions contribute to the discord found throughout the series, and it could be quite difficult for newcomers or even returning fans to dive in. In spite of the many storylines and additional context, the series provides audiences with uniquely enthralling characters, stories, technology, and epiphanies. Stream on Max

Easy to Follow: Fellow Travelers (2023)

Fellow travelers.

Release Date 2023-10-27

Fellow Travelers bloomed late last year as one of the most captivating stories to hit the screens. With Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer at the fore of the project, the series follows two political officials during the peak of the Lavender Scare. After the two converge, the pair leaves the heart of Washington for an emotionally tumultuous adventure throughout time.

What Makes Fellow Travelers Easy to Follow

While time travel serves as the literal and figurative vehicle for the story, the romance between Tim (Bailey) and Hawk (Bomer) takes precedence. With insightful writing and convincing performances, Fellow Travelers is a deeply moving piece that illustrates the melodrama and the secret innocence of a forbidden love. Stream on Showtime

Confusing: Dark (2017-2020)

Dark is a German sci-fi drama that follows a young teen named Jonas (Louis Hofmann) in the wake of a small town tragedy. His interest in the odd occurrences leads him down an irreversible path towards truth, no matter how unsettling and eye-opening it may be. Throughout three seasons, the world of Dark slowly reveals itself as a single miracle rather than the maze of secrets it originally presented itself as.

What Makes Dark Particularly Confusing

In comparison to its peers, time travel is essential to the ethos of Dark. As a result, the showrunners have seemingly taken advantage of the concept and experimented with the functions and the rules found in their fictional universe. That said, there are difficulties in navigating each character's perspective and their relationships with one another. Which is partially the point: the inherent confusion of the series highlights Dark 's reputation as a stunning feat of artistic ingenuity and unconstrained imagination, using death and determination to tell a great story. 'The Adam Project' & 9 Best Time Travel Movies on Netflix

For more mind-bending time travel adventures.

Read update

No matter the time period, time travel movies have always been popular. Whether it is the latest Ryan Reynolds and Netflix collaboration The Adam Project or the sci-fi action masterpiece The Terminator , time travel fans are spoiled for choice. Netflix in particular has plenty of great movies in the genre worth visiting, and some of the best time travel movies on Netflix will have you watching them over and over again.

In Netflix time travel movie The Adam Project , Ryan Reynolds plays a fighter pilot from the future, who crash lands in the present and meets his 12-year-old self. Together they must save the world in a journey that harkens back to Amblin classics from the 1980s while featuring some great needle drops.

Time travel stories have always been a popular narrative choice, with the highest-grossing film of all time, Avengers: Endgame , fitting in the genre. Videogames such as Mortal Kombat 11 also use time travel to great effect. But with The Adam Project being a Netflix original, there are more time travel movies on Netflix to watch after seeing Reynolds quip his way through another memorable performance.

10 'naked' (2017).

Rob ( Marlon Wayans ) is about to marry the girl of his dreams, Megan ( Regina Hall ). But after a night out with his best friend results in Rob waking up naked in an elevator, he must race to the altar to make it in time. Failing that, Rob wakes up again in the elevator, realizing he is trapped in a time loop and must relive the hour over and over again.

Working like a mix of The Hangover and Groundhog Day , Naked will appeal to anyone who enjoyed those screwball comedies. While it is not one of the best time loop movies , it still offers some laughs and is a good enough way to kill an afternoon on the couch.

9 'Captain Nova' (2021)

Like The Adam Project , Captain Nova follows a fighter pilot who is sent back in time to stop a catastrophe. Nova ( Kika Van De Vijver ) finds herself transformed into her younger self due to her journey through time, however, making it hard for adults to take her seriously as she warns them of the dangers to come.

Hailing from the Netherlands, Captain Nova makes for a nice change from the American movies that dominate the time travel genre on Netflix. Due to its protagonist's youthful transformation, Captain Nova is a kid-friendly take on the formula and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

8 'See You Yesterday' (2019)

Produced by legendary director Spike Lee , See You Yesterday follows two teenage scientists, who are attempting to create a time machine. After one of their older brothers is killed in a police shooting, the pair activate their machine to travel to the past and save him.

While still following the conventions of time travel movies, See You Yesterday stands out with a plot that focuses on relevant social issues. By bringing light to matters that are still plaguing society four years after release, the film is a unique choice within the time travel Netflix catalog.

7 'In the Shadow of the Moon' (2019)

Beginning in 1988, In the Shadow of the Moon follows Thomas Lockhart ( Boyd Holbrook ), a police officer determined to become a detective. When his city is plagued by a serial killer, Lockhart begins investigating, eventually discovering the killer comes back every nine years. As the case deepens, time travel eventually becomes a factor.

In the Shadow of the Moon feels like a callback to the detective thrillers of the '90s, like Se7en . While it does tend to lose focus as more outrageous plot points are introduced, In the Shadow of the Moon remains a solid choice for anyone looking to discover their next crime obsession.

6 'Synchronic' (2019)

Another quality entry in acclaimed duo Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson 's trippy shared universe , Synchronic stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan as paramedics and lifelong friends. After a new drug sweeps their city, resulting in the deaths of its users, the pair investigates after Dornan's daughter goes missing.

The film delves into time travel in ways that will not be spoiled here, but needless to say Synchronic is a trippy film with a central mystery that unravels over time. Both leads excel in their roles and share great chemistry, with Mackie, in particular, delivering a fantastic performance that shows what he can offer when given more meaty roles outside the MCU.

5 'ARQ' (2016)

Waking up to intruders breaking into his home, an engineer ( Robbie Amell ) finds himself trapped within a time loop. With each death sending him back to the start of the invasion, he works to defeat his pursuers and escape with his lover ( Rachael Taylor ).

ARQ works as a sci-fi spin on films such as Happy Death Day , with the audience learning new information alongside the protagonist with each subsequent loop and eventual death. While not as charming as Happy Death Day , ARQ still offers an enjoyable take on the genre.

4 'When We First Met' (2018)

When We First Met follows Adam DeVine , of Workaholics fame, as he repeatedly goes back in time to try and win over the girl of his dreams ( Alexandra Daddario ). Being a romantic comedy, the film stands apart from other time travel movies that focus on more serious consequences.

While We First Met does not offer much new to the genre, though DeVine gives an admirable performance to help carry the film. Fans of his stand-up or the aforementioned Workaholics should have a good time watching his numerous attempts to escape the hellish nightmare called "the friend zone."

3 'Long Story Short' (2021)

Waking up the morning after his wedding to discover that his life is jumping forward in time every few minutes, Teddy ( Rafe Spall ) is forced to use his dwindling time to stay with the woman he loves. With every jump causing them to drift further apart, time is running out for the bumbling lead.

Like When We First Met , Long Story Short uses time travel in a romantic comedy , albeit in a more urgent way. The Australian film was directed by Josh Lawson , known to audiences as Kano, the best part of the recent Mortal Kombat film.

2 'The Adam Project' (2022)

When fighter pilot Adam Reed (Ryan Reynolds) travels from 2050 to 2012, he is forced to work together with his 12-year-old self in order to get back home and save his deceased wife Laura ( Zoe Saldana ). The two Adams end up going on a journey full of heart and humor as they travel through time.

The latest in the long line of big-budget blockbusters on Netflix, The Adam Project is one of the best free movies you can access on the service. Reynolds is always a charming lead, and along with Saldana, they are supported by a winning cast that includes Mark Ruffalo , Jennifer Garner , and Catherine Keener .

1 'Mirage' (2018)

When Vera ( Adriana Ugarte ) and her family move into a new home, they discover that a boy died there thirty years ago. Finding a way to communicate with the boy in the past, Vera warns him of his death and saves his life, only to change the flow of time in the process.

As the best time travel movie Netflix has to offer, Mirage is a compelling mystery thriller from Spain. As more circumstances of the boy's death emerge, greater narrative threads are pulled into this time-bending journey, with Ugarte delivering a great performance as the central character.

Movies and TV-series about TIME TRAVEL

Many time-travel movies and TV-series. Strange how re-watching a movie at different ages of your life can conjure up different meanings, emotions and conclusions. When someone dear to you dies or after a break-up, maybe you’ll believe that time-travel could help fix things. If only… I didn't include "Idiocracry" because hibernating oneself and waking up in the future doesn't count in my opinion. However if you travel to a parallel universe which is set in the past or the future, then I bend the rule but strictly speaking this is not time travel. I didn't include "Dr Who" because I never liked this series.... too insulting to one’s intellect.

1. Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel (2009)

PG-13 | 83 min | Comedy, Sci-Fi

While drinking at their local pub, three social outcasts attempt to navigate a time-travel conundrum.

Director: Gareth Carrivick | Stars: Chris O'Dowd , Marc Wootton , Dean Lennox Kelly , Anna Faris

Votes: 36,417

I really like this British movie. Its time travelling method is the most credible way anyone of us could ever time travel - by pure chance. A simple way to time travel which doesn't require any fancy machine (and costly CGI). Just the fact that time-holes ("time leaks") could appear anywhere like black-holes. For example, in the men's toilet of a pub. But if you go in the ladies, then the time jump is worse. Look up "grandfather paradox" after watching this.

2. Donnie Darko (2001)

R | 113 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

After narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes.

Director: Richard Kelly | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal , Jena Malone , Mary McDonnell , Holmes Osborne

Votes: 845,424 | Gross: $1.48M

I was a fresher at university when this came out. Needed to watch it a few times before understanding the “time portal.” Very interesting and well-made movie. No amount of spoliers could stop me from re-watching Jake Gyllenhaal’s first time-travel movie. Don't bother with its sequel "S. Darko."

3. The Butterfly Effect (2004)

R | 113 min | Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller

Evan Treborn suffers blackouts during significant events of his life. As he grows up, he finds a way to remember these lost memories and a supernatural way to alter his life by reading his journal.

Directors: Eric Bress , J. Mackye Gruber | Stars: Ashton Kutcher , Amy Smart , Melora Walters , Elden Henson

Votes: 518,574 | Gross: $57.94M

This is a scary version of time-travel but definitely a must watch. The father passes on a time-travel gene to his son. This super-power works in the following way: You stare intently at a note from your childhood diary or a childhood photos and your mind uses it as a marker to send you back to that point in time. However it is not a whole body time travel, just your current mind and all its data. It kinda makes sense on an energetic level to only time-travel your consciousness. The “John Carter" movie uses a similar-ish teleportation philosophy - The teleportation device sends a copy of you on Mars while your original body hibernates on earth. In Butterfly Effect, only your brain is needed and maybe this is where movie “Synchronic” got its idea. The ending will surprise you, It is very sad but an original ending.

4. Project Almanac (2015)

PG-13 | 106 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

A group of teens discovers secret plans for a time machine, and construct one. However, things start to get out of control.

Director: Dean Israelite | Stars: Amy Landecker , Sofia Black-D'Elia , Virginia Gardner , Jonny Weston

Votes: 83,923 | Gross: $22.35M

A lot of good nerdy things happen at the beginning of this movie. But when it gets to time travel part, you may not be as impressed as during the build-up intro. Good watch though, just don't make it a Sunday afternoon movie. Americans just don't know how to end a movie. Great start. Boring middle. Predictable time-travel ending.

5. Source Code (2011)

PG-13 | 93 min | Action, Drama, Mystery

A soldier wakes up in someone else's body and discovers he's part of an experimental government program to find the bomber of a commuter train within 8 minutes.

Director: Duncan Jones | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal , Michelle Monaghan , Vera Farmiga , Jeffrey Wright

Votes: 547,038 | Gross: $54.71M

Jake Gyllenhaal’s third time travel movie. An amazing piece of military hardware is used to time-travel a software version of your consciousness to a point in time that your memory remembers before you died. The inventor thinks that your mind is a Matrix and his machine can rewind the data and place you some time before you died so you can start investigating. Virtual-You never dies so the rewind process can be repeated over and over again until the mission is accomplished. The mission in this case is to prevent a terrorist attack on a train and a bigger one on an American city. Major cliffhanger at the end because virtual-you can indeed change things beyond the parameters of the software time-travel. Can you imagine if instead of a stupid train, the author adapted the movie to 9/11? And instead of Jake Gyllenhaal they hired Tom Cruise or Bruce Willis, proper action/scifi guys who acted in such time-travel movies as Edge Of Tomorrow and 12 Monkeys respectively.

6. Deja Vu (2006)

PG-13 | 126 min | Action, Crime, Sci-Fi

After a ferry is bombed in New Orleans, an A.T.F. agent joins a unique investigation using experimental surveillance technology to find the bomber, but soon finds himself becoming obsessed with one of the victims.

Director: Tony Scott | Stars: Denzel Washington , Paula Patton , Jim Caviezel , Val Kilmer

Votes: 326,268 | Gross: $64.04M

I hope that one day they will make a prequel to this. The days when the team of scientists invented the time-viewing machinery and caused a power black out over a significant part of America. If Cloverfield can have “Cloverfield Paradox” prequel, then why not a “Deja Vu” prequel. I really loved this movie especially the bits with Adam Goldberg (he has an interesting twitter page and i follow him). Great CSI detective movie wrapped inside time-travel cocoon or maybe the other way round?

7. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

PG-13 | 113 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

A soldier fighting aliens gets to relive the same day over and over again, the day restarting every time he dies.

Director: Doug Liman | Stars: Tom Cruise , Emily Blunt , Bill Paxton , Brendan Gleeson

Votes: 730,991 | Gross: $100.21M

A time-travel goo which resets time as soon as you die. Much like losing a life in a video game and you re-appear because of the "3 Lives” rule. However in this movie you can come back to life, in the past and for as long as the time-travel substance stays in your blood. The alien Omega creature thinks you are an alien Alpha and does the time resetting for you. Will Tom Cruise become the Omega in the end? You damn know he will.

British comedy with the kid from The Inbetweeners (UK) Tv-series. A magic amulet takes the kid to a parallel universe but it seems to be set around Stonehenge era. Basically time-travel to me. I am sad that season 3 was the last ever.

A great comedy. Instead of forward or backwards, this movie is about traveling side-ways through time. I didn't quite get it. Some point in time where all times co-exist. A good wk-end watch. Get drunk beforehand.

Director: John Woo | Stars: Ben Affleck , Aaron Eckhart , Uma Thurman , Michael C. Hall

Votes: 112,965 | Gross: $53.79M

Ben Affleck is a reverse engineer who eventually stumbles on a big life-changing contract. As per contract his memory is wiped but when his employer tried to get him arrested and killed, he tries to remember and retrace what job he was on. It should be no spoiler that if this movie is listed here, then the job was to do with time-travel - a time-viewing machine to see future events. Besides this, the movie is a big puzzle solving story with a cheesy love story to boot. Fortunately it is mostly action scifi so no worries here.

Votes: 584,418 | Gross: $58.46M

Time Inversion. I didn't like it. Too complex for its own good. Not really a good time travel movie, just a lot of action and shooting while you try to figure out what the heck is going on. I like complex movies with cliffhangers à la Inception but this was a bit much.

33. Predestination (I) (2014)

R | 97 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

Time travel phenomenon while a comet passes. I personally found it very intriguing and wasn't bored once. It is not some fancy CGI time-travel movie but has all the elements of a well tied up & credible plot. They even devise tests to check who is from their timeline and who is someone from the other timelines (could have easily been a parallel universe movie with copies intermingling). I am pretty sure the movie ends with a cliffhanger after comet's gone and everything is back to normal.

A bit like” Source Code” type of time travel. They call this time-loop but this one feels a lot like a video game.

40. Synchronic (2019)

R | 102 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

Two New Orleans paramedics' lives are ripped apart after they encounter a series of horrific deaths linked to a designer drug with bizarre, otherworldly effects.

Directors: Justin Benson , Aaron Moorhead | Stars: Anthony Mackie , Jamie Dornan , Katie Aselton , Ally Ioannides

Votes: 39,734

An original time travel movie with a somewhat credible plot. A drug accesses a part of your brain which enables you to decouple from your current timeline onto another random timeline. The jump is always backwards in time and is unpredictable as to when you’ll land. So for example, your apartment may disappear and be replaced by a swamp or an ice-age location of it. However you’ll only stay in that environment for 7 minutes. It is important that you return to exact location of the transfer otherwise you’ll be stuck in the past and require another pill to forward travel in time. The location of the transfer is important. This movie falls in the domain of super powers I reckon (much like Limitless movie). In Synchronic, a drug uses your own energy to physically move you to another timeline. Apparently time travel is impossible because it requires a lot of energy so authors constantly figure out a way around this obstacle.

Director: Joel Guelzo | Stars: Stephen Birge , Aric Burkert , Debbie Carlson , Jon Carlson

It is not a boring movie for sure but it may feel like a cheaply made B-movie. The main actor looks and sound very credible. The female A.I has an annoying voice. The time travel happens by opening some kind of field between 2 metal poles and you walk through it. I believe the kid wants to save his parents from a car accident. I have reached 3/4 of the movie. The A.I couldn't answer the question "ANI what date is it today?" But prior to that scene, it could tell the kid where the time-travel lab was using GPS. GPS maths gives you local time as well as coordinates you dumb A.I. (or ignorant author). At that point, i gave up on the movie.

Army of kids from the future finds a way to build a time machine to go backwards in time 30 years, gather new recruits and ship them forward in time 30 years. For this to happen, you need to wear an electronic arm bracelet. In the apocalyptic future, the recruits are given tasks but most die against an alien animal enemy which shoots darts at you and eat you up. The main worry about modern sci-fi is how bad is its woke factor going to be. An army of teenagers with a female teen leader, really?? So pretty bad. While the woke dialogues have been removed, you will feel it in terms of feminist agenda and quotas for female in roles where they shouldn't be. Worst, it is an army of Greta Thunberg children because adults are useless somehow. The ending part (after the time machine breaks) is the best part of this movie - determining how the alien arrived, etc.

46. ARQ (2016)

TV-MA | 88 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

Trapped in a lab and stuck in a time loop, a disoriented couple fends off masked raiders while harboring a new energy source that could save humanity.

Director: Tony Elliott | Stars: Robbie Amell , Rachael Taylor , Shaun Benson , Gray Powell

Votes: 41,683

Couple stuck in a time loop protecting an ARQ infinite energy source. The story is that this new energy source got short-circuited at some time in the morning and using its own fuel cells, it created a time tangent which loops on itself when fuel-cell run out. This goes on until or if the main protagonists decide to shut it down before loop begins. Not boring movie at all. The ending didn't have a feel good factor to it though.

47. In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)

Every 9 years during blood moon, the gravitational force exerted on earth interferes with pockets of electromagnetism thus allowing someone to come back from the future using some kind of pod-shaped device. In this case the person traveling to the past and because thanks to wokeness, it is a BAME woman with more power and martial-art skill than male cops. There goes my ability to take this movie seriously.

Sinkholes at the bottom of which is a green-coloured breach in space time continuum. A time-hole (wormhole) taking you to LA 10,000BC. I thought I wouldn't because a woman seems to be self-appointed leader of this group but it is ok so far (ep 4). No woke poison or very little of it.

50. The Orville (2017–2022)

Robot Isaac has made progress on Doctor Aronov's temporal device but when the Orville hits a gravitational wave, Kelly from 7 years ago appears in the ship. The episode is about interaction of young and old Kelly on the ship and ending with Isaac finding a way to send her back in time.). Episode 2x14 (S02E14) - The Road Not Taken. 51. Debris (2021)

TV-PG | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

Two agents from two different continents and two different mindsets, must work together to investigate when wreckage from a destroyed alien spacecraft has mysterious effects on humankind.

Stars: Jonathan Tucker , Riann Steele , Norbert Leo Butz , Scroobius Pip

Votes: 9,068

Time loop is caused when a teenage kid swims inside part of the wreckage (debris) of the alien ship. The 2 investigators get trapped into the temporal sphere of the time loop and must find a way to end it. But each loop causes a fracture in the timeline which later becomes visible due thinning of dimensions between the timelines. So they must act fast before time-space continuum rips apart. Something like that... Was glad to see “Walter Bishop” from Fringe in the very last episode’s cliffhanger ending. Episode 1x09 (S01E09) - Do you know Icarus? Episode 1x10 (S01E10) - I am Icarus?

53. Timeless (2016–2018)

TV-14 | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

An unlikely trio travels through time to battle unknown criminals and protect history as we know it.

Stars: Abigail Spencer , Matt Lanter , Malcolm Barrett , Paterson Joseph

They use a UFO-shaped time machine to get to when they want. After one of the machines is stolen from the research facility, a team consisting of a white Special Forces man, a white History professor lady and a black technical guy are tasked by DHS to use the back-up time machine to chase the “time bandits.” The plot is very basic and linear: Criminals time travel to crucial moments of American history. The good guys arrive a few moments after them and their female historian has to guess what the baddies are up to and how to foil their plan. It is very easy going movie. Nothing cerebral. 2016 was beginning of woke-ism so this tv-series isn't as toxic as modern tv-series.

54. Volition (2019)

TV-MA | 91 min | Sci-Fi, Thriller

A man afflicted with clairvoyance tries to change his fate when a series of events leads to a vision of his own imminent murder.

Sees the future (like the movie "Next") and acts accordingly. But to spice things up, a scientist gives him a shot of a serum which activates part of the brain that supposedly allows you to time travel (like in the movie Synchronic). This is why people describe this time travel movie as a mishmash of other time travel movies.

55. The Adam Project (2022)

A time travel hole in the ground located on a farmer's West pasture ground. Unlike "La Brea" TV-series, this hole stays open because it is made of a time travel liquid which looks like crude oil. But the liquid can sink, disappear and come back later. From episode 2, the main actor is thrown in the pit, he travels to the future and is able to come back to his timeline by jumping back in the pit.

57. The Lazarus Project (2022– )

Stars: Paapa Essiedu , Anjli Mohindra , Rudi Dharmalingam , Caroline Quentin

Votes: 7,743

You may be put off by the lefty theme that Sky tries to shove down your throat right from the start such as Biden’s need to subject us to interracial couples or women in position of power. But bare with it as this series is quite interesting. This is a “Time Loop” series. Earth G5 multinationals or the Brits have somehow managed to create a wormhole in space (checkpoint) which can reset time to 6 months ago. The people working for this agency called “The Lazarus Project” are either injected with a serum or are mutants who can remember all past timelines (which get erased when checkpoint is activated). Everyone else on earth will have their memory reset like NPCs in a game. This ability to remember helps the Lazarus agents accomplish mission (save earth from a virus or nuclear annihilation).

Episode 2x18 (S02E18) - White Tulip An MIT professor wants to save his wife from a road accident and develops a time travel “thingy” but fails to achieve the correct time-jump distance to save his wife. While he figures out how to solve the problem (9th degree polynomial), Fringe team gets caught inside his time loops but slowly and surely gets closer to arresting him. Episode 4x06 (S04E06) - And Those We Left Behind An electrical engineer follows his physicist wife’s equation and builds a time travel device in his basement. Due to a sudden illness, her equations are incomplete and his device can only jump back in time to 2007 for a short time before returning back to 2011. Each time he turns on the “time chambre” device, he hopes his wife will be able to complete her equations. However outside the time bubble surrounding his home, time anomalies are affecting daily lives of individuals and drags Fringe team in to investigate. Episode 5x05 (S05E05) - An Origin Story Peter Bishop tries to collapse a shipping lane (stable time wormhole) created by the Observers from the future (2936) to now (2036). Walter Bishop’s explanation on how it works is quite fascinating. Sadly Peter’s attempt to use an antimatter bomb to collapse his end of the wormhole so the future’s end turns into a blackhole doesn’t work.

60. Quantum Leap (2022– )

They bombard you with woke tropes right from the start. Women, ethnic and LGBT actors everywhere. You know you will see Biden’s inter-racial couples just round the corner. I have poor first impression and I’ve only watched 4min45s. The woman with a weird chin has really put me off watching this.

62. Plan B (2023– )

Drama, Sci-Fi

A controlling husband who wants a successful family goes back in time to try to change the course of events and the outcome of his failing marriage.

Stars: Patrick J. Adams , Karine Vanasse , François Arnaud , Victoria Sanchez

The main actor phones the Plan B company. They bill his credit card and kidnap him the next morning. Afterwards he wakes up in the time coordinate he specified. If his credit card has insufficient funds, nothing will happen. By episode 2, i was filled with pure boredom hoping that there was an actual storyline or plot. It’s as if they strapped time travel to a boring work-life drama. All i could hear in episode 2 was constant bickering of his wife, a female lawyer he was forced to hire and 2 women from a mining company. Listening to constant bickering and a monotonous soundtrack is just unpleasant and uninteresting. Maybe one for the £1 bin…

63. The Tomorrow Job (2023)

16+ | 105 min | Action, Sci-Fi

A team of thieves use a drug that allows them to trade consciousnesses with their future-selves in order to steal tomorrow's secrets.

Director: Bruce Wemple | Stars: Grant Schumacher , Caitlin Duffy , Ariella Mastroianni , Chris Cimperman

Votes: 1,264

They take a pill so their consciousness can time travel to the future. When they return to their present bodies, they use the gathered information to influence their present financial decisions. However another team tries to catch the trio. Very B-movie but watchable. I think the writer and producer must have thought that Synchronic was a cool time-travel movie.

64. Lola (2022)

Votes: 2,250

Device made by 2 women and which can intercept radio/tv broadcasts from the future and….… It is utter garbage. No wonder it went under my radar. I was unable to watch more than 9 minutes. I simply can’t take any tech/science movie seriously when there are gimmicky feminist women in it. Get woke go broke.

Iraq's president has said he is "extremely disappointed" with the UK government's response to the war in Gaza - accusing it of "ignoring" the suffering of Palestinians.

"The Palestinian problem has become an international problem," President Abdul Latif Rashid told Sky News.

"And, recently, the suffering of the Palestinian people and the attacks on Gaza, especially on civilians and children, is beyond anything which human rights can accept, and I think it is the duty of the international community to put an end to the suffering of the Palestinian people."

The president was speaking to Sky News from the Presidential Palace in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, in a rare interview with Western media.

Labour enjoyed its highest-ever annual amount in private donations across 2023 in a major boost for Sir Keir Starmer as the UK gears up for a general election.

Labour accepted nearly £13m in individual donations, surpassing the £5.8m it received from trade unions, historically the party's biggest donors.

Individual donors include Autoglass boss Gary Lubner, who gave £4.5m, while the largest single donation of £3m was provided by Lord David Sainsbury, a long-standing party supporter.

In total, Labour amassed just over £31m in overall donations in 2023, a significant increase from the £21.4m the party accepted in 2022.

The second highest annual sum for private donations to the party was £10.8 million in 2005.

However, despite their trouble in the polls, the Conservatives outstripped Labour in political donations last year, accepting £48m in donations over the 12-month period, of which £35.8m came from individuals.

It marks a significant increase on 2022, when the Conservatives accepted just £17.9m in donations following the turmoil that saw three different prime ministers enter Number 10.

The SNP, however, saw donations drop from £1.7m in 2022 to £1.5m in 2023.

Lord Cameron has urged Hamas to accept a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal.

"They are the ones now holding up the stopping of this fighting," he said.

He was speaking at a news conference in Berlin alongside his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock (see previous posts).

He said the two leaders are also working "incredibly hard" on the issue of how to get more aid into Gaza.

"Nothing must distract us from the fact that ultimately if we want to avoid famine, if we want to avoid disease, if we want to help people in Gaza, we need 500 trucks a day," he said.

"This need really is urgent."

Asked whether the UK is doing enough to pressure Israel to allow aid into Gaza, he said: "I think the Israelis have to really understand that this is on the brink of being a desperate situation in terms of disease and famine, and so the time for doing more is now.

"We also need to make sure that at the same time as saying that, we say to Hamas that they should release these hostages."

The US, Egypt, and Qatar have been working to broker an agreement on a six-week ceasefire and the release of 40 hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel.

Lord David Cameron has said he doesn't want to "play into the hands of some Russian narrative about divisions" between allies as he addressed the issue of a leaked audio recording of a meeting of senior German military officials.

In the recording, published by Russian media last week, the officers discussed whether long-range Taurus missiles could be used in Ukraine without the presence of German troops.

However, the leak also suggested that UK service personnel were already operating in Ukraine. It has prompted concern in London that German officers were discussing sensitive details on an unencrypted line.

Speaking at a news conference in Berlin alongside his German counterpart (see previous post), the foreign secretary was asked whether he agreed with Germany's assessment that trust among allies is unbroken.

"I don't want to play into the hands of some Russian narrative about divisions between allies," he said.

"What I see … is incredible unity between allies, incredible unity in NATO.

"Of course, we're going to have areas where we want to discuss what more we can do, what more we can help. And those are the sorts of discussions that good friends and allies with this unity have in private."

Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron has warned the war in Ukraine is the "test for politicians of this generation".

He was speaking in a joint news conference with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock in Berlin.

"I don't have any doubt that the Ukrainians are brave enough… I don't have any doubt in their ability to fight and to resist this appalling Russian aggression," he says.

"The question is for us. Are we, the European countries ... the allies of Ukraine, are we going to see this through?

"Are we going to give them what they need?

"Are we going to back them with everything that we have?"

Lord Cameron heralded the military, diplomatic and financial support provided by both Germany and the UK, saying they are "two of the biggest contributors".

But  he said: "We both know we have to ask ourselves what more can do we do?".

Downing Street has urged NATO countries to supply Ukraine with long-range missiles, following the UK's decision to send Storm Shadow missiles to the country last year.

However, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been unwilling to send Taurus long-range cruise missiles to Kyiv on the grounds that German soldiers would have to be sent to Ukraine to help operate them, dragging Germany into war with Russia.

Lord Cameron said the decision on medium and long-range missiles is a "sovereign decision for every country," but that he knows what the UK has given to Ukraine has "helped them to resist this appalling invasion and fight back against Russian aggression".

"You get peace through strength … you get peace by helping the Ukrainians deliver what they need on the battlefield," he said.

The first minister of Wales was concerned that the UK government's handling of COVID was a "genuine threat" to the future of the union, the public inquiry has heard.

Mark Drakeford's most senior special adviser, Jane Runeckles, told the COVID Inquiry there were "tensions" between the way Welsh and UK governments responded to the pandemic.

The inquiry is in its second of three weeks of hearings in Cardiff, focusing on the Welsh government's decisions.

Ms Runeckles said the contact between Wales's first minister and then Prime Minister Boris Johnson was "infrequent".

"I believe the first minister had a genuine, sincerely-held concern that some of the actions of the United Kingdom government in relation to the way they had handled some of the earlier period was a genuine threat to the future of the United Kingdom," she said.

"The tensions between the actions taken by the Welsh government and the actions taken by the UK government became more and more obvious."

Away from the budget and other political matters, Tory MP Anna Firth has provided an update on a statue of Sir David Amess.

She travelled to see it with the late Tory politician's wife.

Sir David was murdered in October 2021 while at a surgery in his Southend West constituency.

Ali Harbi Ali has been sentenced to a whole life prison term for the killing.

Rishi Sunak has insisted "our plans are working" following the budget, which he says will "make the average household better off".

The prime minister was speaking from South Yorkshire, where he also reiterated his "long-term ambition" to scrap national insurance after the chancellor announced another 2p cut yesterday ( see 12.08 post ).
