Destination Overview – Flam
Where is flam.
Welcome to One day in Flam – a destination guide for cruise passengers.
Nestled right at the end of one of the branches of the 205 km Sognefjord – Norway’s longest and deepest fjord – you will find Flam. Flam is a small port (population: circa 350) surrounded by steep mountains and it is often a highlight for many cruise passengers on a seven-night Norwegian fjords cruise . In my opinion, Flam epitomises the essence of Norway: friendly people, spectacular views, and a relaxed atmosphere.
It’s a port which also offers many opportunities to explore further such as picturesque Nordic Fjord villages, UNESCO world heritage areas and a Viking village experience, all within 20km of the port . With backdrops and locations acting as inspiration for Disney films (Frozen) plus the chance to explore some spectacular scenery, and an epic railway journey, Flam certainly punches well above its weight compared to other small port destinations. You will definitely need at least one more return visit.
It is reassuring to know that Flam has taken positive steps to ensure it doesn’t become too overcrowded as a port – even when a big ship visits. Since 2018, Port of Flam only accepts ships with over 5000 passengers if it is the only ship in port on a particular day. So it is encouraging to know that even some of the largest ships such as Iona with capacity for 5,206 passengers and powered by more environmentally friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG) are still welcomed into this beautiful port. Despite the restrictions, Flam still welcomes over around 150 cruise ships per year and is one of the most visited destinations in Norway.
Regardless of whether you decide to stay around the main centre or hike a little further from port, you’re unlikely to lose sight of your ship for long. As soon as you step off ship, you are in the centre of things. If there are two ships in port that day, you may need a tender but most of the larger ships dock in the deep-water berth right next to the main harbour area.
A big bonus when visiting Flam is that formal shore excursions are not necessary for you to enjoy a memorable experience in port. Flam is a wonderful port for exploring independently and an easy one to navigate.

Bucket list ideas in Flam
What are the most popular attractions in flam, flam railway.
There are many ways to spend a day in Flam but the Flam railway (Flamsbana) is the most popular option for many cruisers. This train journey is magnificent. Over the course of one hour, the train takes you from sea level at the Sognefjord in Flåm to the Myrdal mountain station, situated at 867 metres above sea level. Myrdal is also a station on the Bergen Line, meaning the Flåm Railway connects with trains running between Bergen and Oslo. Which is good to know for potential return visits on land.
The only thing that lets it down is that the railway a little pricey – especially if you book your trip on the railway as a shore excursion through your cruise line and you are a family of four. One way to save 50% off the ships shore excursion price is to book directly here
If you book direct the ticket prices are around 630 NOK for adults and 480 NOK for children for a return journey in peak season. You need to be quick off the mark as tickets sell out very fast. Tickets go on sale months in advance, so as soon as you know you are visiting Flam and you want to experience a trip on the railway – try to book tickets as soon as they go live to guarantee your timeslot.
See of the route from the train driver’s perspective
What else is there to do in Flam?
If you missed your slot for the railway or don’t want to pay the inflated shore excursion prices or even if you’ve already experienced the railway and are lucky enough to return to Flam on another cruise there are plenty of other options for all budgets, tastes and activity levels.
Visit the Stegastein Viewpoint
Whether you decide to visit on a shore excursion or in a electric car, the journey is part of this experience. The views at the top will leave you speechless.
Hire an EcoCar
These nifty electric cars are a fun way to explore Flam and the surrounding area. You are given all the training you need before you start your journey and they are easy to drive. Just remember to bring your driver’s licence. There are four routes you can choose from which vary in their duration and therefore, price. All come with a GPS guide to follow so you don’t get lost. Plus the GPS includes a pre-recorded guide which shares interesting facts at key points along the entire route.
Visit the Viking Valley in Gudvangen
You can visit independently by combining it with a ticket on the Future of the Fjords ferry – just keep an eye on times so you’re back in plenty of time before your ship departs. There is also a shuttle bus available if you want to do the return trip by road.
Visit Undredal
An authentic goat’s cheese producing village by the fjord, rumoured to be inspiration for Arandelle from Disney’s Frozen. But don’t expect any gimmicky attractions. This is an authentic Norwegian Fjord Village. Well worth a visit.
You can get the tourist ferry which takes approximately 35 minutes each way and spend a day wondering around this picturesque Norwegian village. One of the highlights of Undredal is the Stave church.
You can either hop on the Future of the Fjords ferry or discover it on a Fjord Safari aboard a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat). If you don’t get a chance to visit Undredal when you visit Flam, you will pass Undredal about half an hour or so before you are due to arrive at port (it’s only about 15km away from Flam) so if you have a balcony on the starboard side keep a lookout on your way into port – otherwise head up to the public decks for a better view. Alternatively, after sail away head to the port side of the ship for an evening view perhaps matched with a cocktail
Explore Flam village
There are numerous opportunities for iconic photos and points of interest available in Flam if you just want to walk around. There is also a small children’s park a stone’s throw from the ship. If you’re wondering around – be sure to take some photos of the iconic and picturesque Fretheim Fjordhytter ; four, sweet, Nordic-red self-catering chalets available to rent, which are beautifully situated on the water’s edge.
Mall of Norway
If you want to ensure your cruise cash goes to local businesses, then this family owned business is perfect for picking up your souvenirs. Whether it’s a Flam fridge magnet, a locally handmade wool scarf or an item of Norwegian designer clothing, Mall of Norway stocks all things Norwegian. It prides itself in having something for everyone. You might spot Mall of Norway on your other Norwegian Fjords cruise stop in Alesund but the flagship store is located in the station building in the heart of beautiful Flåm. And if you forgot to pick up a souvenir, or if you want to plan your souvenir hunting in advance I also recently discovered they have a webshop – how organised it that!
Freitheim Cultural Park
Offers a 1 hour/1.5km walking trail which starts directly behind the Freitheim hotel
Rallartoget
This is the a little red road train in Flam. It takes you to the main scenic spots around Flam, at a gentle pace which lasts 45 mins.
Not the white sandy kind of beach but still exhilarating. The fjord fills up with water from melting glaciers so even on a warm day the water can be very cold. However paddling by the shore is quite refreshing. Stay still long enough and you’ll notice the little fish swimming quite happily around your feet.
The Railway Museum
Free to enter and definitely worth a visit. Learn about how the Flam Railway was built.

What is there to do near Flam?
If you want to explore Flam a little further on foot and for those who enjoy getting their step count up, Flam offers some breath-taking and extremely picturesque walks.
- Flam Church This is a gentle walk on flat terrain (8km round trip) – follow the road up or alternatively combine it with a journey on the railway (get off at Håreina station) and walk back or take the Rallartoget. There are public toilets near the church.
- Breikfossen Waterfall Approx. 2 hours (5.5 km round trip) don’t let the gentle incline during the first couple of kilometres deceive you – the last kilometre is up hill – Norwegian style (i.e. steep) but the view at the lookout point is completely worth the effort. Just take a look at this 360-degree view. Sturdy walking shoes are suggested for this one. Here’s the walking route – note it goes slightly past the viewing point so don’t forget to turn off to the right. Here’s a map of the other hikes in Flam
What activities are available in Flam?
- Hire a bike Combine a journey on the Flamsbana and cycle downhill back to Flam. Alternatively just hire a bicycle for the day and explore Flam and the surrounding area at your leisure or cycle along Aurlandsfjord. The terrain is flat and suitable for nearly everyone. Here’s a suggested cycle route .
- Kayaking Fun on the Fjords for ages 5 upwards.
- Fjords Safari Interestingly there is no age limit for this if you book directly, but this option was only available for passengers 12 years + if booked through our cruise line.
Where can you eat in Flam?
As your ship is berthed in the centre of the village, you can easily pop back on board for some lunch if you want to save some money – but it’s worth exploring some of the delicious offerings in Flam with options from quick bites to more formal dining.
- Flam Marina and Apartment Cafe
Flåm Marina is just a 7 minute walk along shoreline from the Flåm railway station. Situated on the shores of the fjord, the glass pavilion offers an undisrupted view. The atmosphere here is described as calm and cosy.
- Bakastova Café
“The red cosy cafe at the top of the hill’ can be found nestled between the Fretheim Hotel and the EcoCars garage. Just slightly up hill, the cafe offers good food matched with lovely views of the fjord and your ship.
- Flam Brewery – Ægir Bryggeri
Well worth a visit especially if you’re after that Viking longhouse feel. A microbrewery named after a Norse God, you’ll find an open fire, dragon carvings and a stave church roof. You almost expect Thor to walk in for a beer after an epic battle.
- Flam Bakery
Resistance is futile. The smell will drawn you in and then you’re hooked.

Flam is a small port village (population under 500) located in Flamsdalen, at the inner end of Aurlandsfjorden, a branch of Sognefjorden. It is situated in Aurland municipality, Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway.
Flam Church was built in 1670. The construction of Flam Line was financed by parliament in 1923. The decision to build the line was made in 1908. In 1942 ordinary operation of trains started on Flam Line. Cruise ships stayed on the fjord in the 1960s. The "new pier" was referred to in a Norwegian Government-issued document from 2000. The closest airport is Sogndal Airport, Haukasen, located approx 70 km (43 mi) from the cruise port. E16 highway from Oslo to Bergen runs through Flam. The route is approx 7 km (4,3 mi) southwest of Aurlandsvangen's downtown, 12 km (7,5 mi) south of Undredal, and 15 km (9,3 mi) east of Gudvangen (through Gudvanga Tunnel).
Flam has been a tourist destination since late-19th-century. Today it receives nearly 450,000 visitors per year. Most tourists ride the 20-km (12-mi) long Flam Line between (linking with Myrdal) ranked one of world's steepest railway tracks (at 1 in 18). There are a few spirals, as well. The former rail station building currently houses a museum dedicated to the railway (Flamsbana).
Among the newest cruise tourist attractions is the fully electric tour boat (launched in 2018) MS Future of the Fjords - LOA length 42 m (138 ft), with floor-ceiling windows and outdoor slanted promenades accessing all decks. The other large tour boat (hybrid vessel (Vision of the Fjords) is a hybrid ferry (running on LNG and MGO).
Main cruising season runs March through October. The harbor receives around 160 cruise ship calls per year. In recent years, cruise port's constant growth made it a year-round destination. In 2018, it scheduled 153 ship calls and ~250,000 passengers. For season 2019 were scheduled 159 ship calls (from the initially booked 176 berthings. SInce 2018, Port Flam limits cruise passengers' capacity to max 5,000 (in port at once).
In early-July 2020, ENOVA (2001-founded, Norwegian Government enterprise) granted to Port Flam NOK 27 million (EUR 2,53 million / USD 2,8 million) for building a shoreside power capability for passenger ships ( ferries and cruise vessels). The project includes laying of an underwater cable from Aurland Power Station (hydroelectric power station owned by E-CO Energi) directly to Flam. Project's total cost is NOK 83 million (EUR 7,77 M / USD 12,5 M). Shore-power supply allows docked ships to turn off their engines (while berthed), thus reducing Port Flam's emissions from passenger ships by 75%.
Flam cruise terminal
Large cruise ships to Flam dock on a wharf in the harbor area. The wharf is located at short walking distance from the port. Before the year 2000 (when the "cruise pier" was inaugurated), cruise vessels used to stay anchored on the fjord without reaching the port.
Occasionally, passengers are transported to the railway station via the ship's tender boats.
The port plans a cruise pier expansion (up to 160 m / 525 ft) and building new bollard (short post for mooring lines).
The Flam Line (Flamsbana) is a scenic railroad between Flam and Myrdal. The line is a branch of the Bergen Line (Bergensbanen), runs through the Flamsdalen valley and connects the mainline with Sognefjorden.
- The line has 1 bridge, 20 tunnels and 10 stations.
- The railroad's length is 20 km (13 ml), its elevation difference 863 m (2831 ft) and the max slope is 5,5%. The steep incline (1 to 18, fjord to mountaintop) and the amazing views of the passing unique countryside make the Flam Line Norway's 3rd most visited by tourists attraction.
- Flam Line's departures are 10 per day during high tourist season (May through September) and 5 per day during the rest of the year.

Visiting flam on a cruise: the flam scenic railway and more.
Tucked between two mountains at the head of Aurlandsfjorden, the teeny hamlet of Flam is a popular Norwegian cruise port. Although it is a good base for hiking and has a visit-worthy 17th-century church, its main tourist draw is the Flam scenic railway.
Running between Flam and Myrdal, this is considered to be one of Norway’s most scenic train journeys. To help you make the most of your cruise stop in Flam, here are some tips on how to book the Flåmsbana scenic train ride, what to expect and a guide to the other attractions of the hamlet.

How I Visited Flam on a Cruise
Flam (or Flåm, to be correct) was port number two of my week-long cruise along Norway’s fjords .
- Cruise operator: P&O
- Cruise ship: HMV Britannia
- Time in port : 11 am – 6 pm
Leaving Stavanger the previous evening, all 143,000 tonnes of MV Britannia weaved her way through the bends and turns of Sognefjorden and Aurlandsfjorden to reach the hamlet of Flam shortly after 7 am. Seagulls cried and sheep bleated their respective welcomes.
Flam cruise port is a (very) short walk to the train station (Flam is tiny!).
I started the day by riding the Flam scenic railway and then took a short hike around the hamlet using the map from the Tourist Information Office.
Why Ride the Flam Scenic Railway?
Not only is the Flåmsbana super-scenic, but it is also a marvel of modern engineering.
Completed in 1940, it runs a total distance of approximately 12 miles from Flam , at sea level, to Myrdal , at an altitude of 2,845 feet. At its steepest point, the gradient is 1:18, making it the steepest standard-gauge railway in Europe.
But fear not nervous travellers; the train is equipped with not one, not two, but five sets of brakes.
Building the line was no mean feat. With its 20 tunnels, most of which had to be dug by hand, 10 stations and one bridge, it took 16 years to complete.
Although the Flam Railway was originally constructed to allow local passenger and freight access to the Bergen – Oslo line, it is now a tourist-oriented service operated by the Norwegian State Railways on behalf of Flam Utvikling.
My Experience of the Flam Railway
Waves of anticipation rippled through the train carriage as passengers took their seats amid excited chatter. I was also stupidly excited at the prospect of riding the Flam Railway , or Flaamsbana (Flåmsbana).
With a toot of the whistle, the train pulled out of the station.
It passed the old village of Flam before winding its way up a gradient of 5.5%, between rocky cliffs and past river gorges and cascading waterfalls. The Flamselvi River on the right-hand side of the train was my companion for most of the journey as the train cut its way through the Flam Valley, shaped by glacial erosion over millions of years.
At Breikvam the track split in two to allow trains to pass one another. If the train makes a short stop here, it is a good opportunity to point your camera out of the window to take a shot along the track.
Around 4km from Myrdal station, the train stopped for ten minutes at the Kjosfossen waterfall . With its thunderous waters falling a total distance of 225 meters, prepare yourself for a drenching.
According to Scandinavian folklore, the waterfall is home to the Huldra , mythical siren women who lured men into the forest with their enchanting song. Although I was vigilant, I failed to spot one dancing next to the waterfall, draped in ger red cloak.
The train skirted the northwestern edge of Reinungavatnet Lake to reach Myrdal . After a ten-minute turn-around, I got to do this all again in the opposite direction.

The return journey between Flam and Myrdal takes around 100 minutes.
How much does the Flam Railway cost?
The Flam Railway fares are seasonal. In 2024, the cost of an adult ticket for the return journey starts from 500 NOK.
Holders of a Eurail or Interrail pass are entitled to a 30% discount. However, as these discounted tickets aren’t available online you will need to buy them at the station or over the phone.
Where can I get tickets for the Flaamsbana?
I highly recommend that you book your Flam Railway ticket in advance in the summer months. The train is extremely busy on days when a cruise ship – or two! – is in town, or when a Norway in a Nutshell day trip is running.
If you choose to book your ticket as a shore excursion from your cruise operator, you will pay a considerable premium.
Although you can also buy tickets in Flam or Myrdal, there’s no guarantee you’ll get the departure you want.
If you are doing the trip independently and are not visiting Flam on a cruise, try to choose the less busy days. My top tip is to check the Norway in a Nutshell timetable and the cruise schedule for Flam .
How do I ride the Flam Railway from Bergen or Oslo?
If you are not visiting Flam on a cruise, you can ride the Flam Railway as part of the self-guided Norway in a Nutshell day trip from either Bergen or Oslo.
The other option is to take the train independently from Bergen to Flam, a one-way journey time of around three hours.
Which direction is best on the Flam Railway?
I rode the Flam Railway in both directions and there’s not much to choose between them.
Of course, you get to see the same scenery, but the downhill journey from Myrdal to Flam was smoother and better for taking photos. The uphill journey from Flam to Myrdal involved more squealing of brakes and side-to-side movement.
Which is the best side of the Flam Railway to sit?
Although the views are great from both sides of the carriage on the Flam Railway, I recommend sitting on the right-hand side if you are travelling from Flam to Myrdal as the light is better. This is particularly the case in the morning, and you also get those sweeping views across the Flam Valley.
If you are travelling on busy days, make sure that you are queuing at the railway station 30 minutes before the train departs to get your pick of the best seats.
Tips for taking photographs on the Flam Scenic Railway
Because of the train’s movement, it can be difficult to take good photographs from the carriage. My top tip for taking photographs on the Flam Railway is to poke your camera lens out of one of the roll-down windows .
However, as not all of the seats in the railway carriage are next to roll-down windows, choose your seat carefully.
Other Things to Do in Flam From a Cruise Ship
As the return journey on the Flam Railway only takes around two hours, you may be looking for other activities to do in and Flam around, particularly if you are on a cruise ship that is not setting off until the evening.
Here is a selection of what is on offer.
Stegastein viewpoint panoramic tour
One of the most photographed sights in the region, the Stegastein Viewpoint is a popular shore excursion from Flam. Rising over 2,000 feet above the fjord and extending 100 feet from the mountainside, this scenic overlook offers unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape.
The operator will pick you up at Flam Cruise Port and you’ll get a full refund if the tour is cancelled because of bad weather.

Hike around Flam
There is a selection of walks in Flam, taking between 30 minutes to 2.5 hours to complete. Pick up the excellent free map in the tourist office.
Other top shore activities in Flam
- Rent a talking car
- Take a RIB fjord safari
- Get the lowdown about the construction of one of Europe’s most scenic railways at the Flam Railway Museum
- Take a heart-pumping ride on Scandinavia’s longest zipline (Flam Zipline)
- Enjoy a steaming hot sauna with a view at FjordSauna
- Join a guided tour of the Aurlands Shoe Factory
- Visit the Stave church at Undredal
Enjoy your cruise stop in Flam
In my view, if you are stopping in Flam on a Norway Fjords cruise, riding the Flam Railway is a must. And let’s face it; what else will you do on a 7-hour cruise stop in Flam?
Although the Flam Railway is expensive, the same can be said for most tourist attractions in Norway. In exchange for your well-earned krone, you will get one of Europe’s most scenic train rides (for me, though, this is trumped by Switzerland’s Glacier Express).
Packing a guidebook to help you explore the Norwegian ports of call independently is a wise move. I’m a big fan of Rick Steves and his guide to Scandinavian & Northern European cruise ports is packed full of useful information.

Discover the charming village of flam: a guide to flam cruise port.
Flam is a charming village that is one of the must-see destinations on a Norwegian Fjords cruise.
Located at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, which is a branch of the longest and deepest fjord in Norway, the Sognefjord, Flam is a place of incredible natural beauty.
Known for its scenic railway, which offers sensational views as it twists and turns its way through the mountain landscape, a stop at Flam cruise port is sure to be a highlight of your cruise.
Read on for information about the port and and some suggestions for what do in Flam.
Is Flam worth visiting?
Considering a cruise with Flam on the itinerary and wondering if it is worth visiting?
Yes, it sure is. Surrounded by magnificent fjords, snow-capped mountains and sparkling waterfalls, Flam is one of the most beautiful places in Norway .
And given how captivating the whole fjords area is, that is saying something.
Whether you like gorgeous scenery, hiking around the outdoors, thrilling adventure sports or just want to relax in nature, there is something for you in this charming village.
Flam cruise port
Flam is a popular cruise port, with over 120 cruise ships due in throughout 2023.
Ships dock at the pier in the harbour area next to the village. However, if there is more than one ship in port, you may anchor in the bay and have to get a tender boat in.
Over the last few years, Flam has limited the number of passengers a day to 5000. So if you are on one of the big ships, you may find there is a good chance you will be on the only ship in port.
As you might expect in such a small place, there is no huge cruise or port terminal here. Once you disembark, everything in the village is a short walk away.
What do in Flam from a cruise ship
For such a tiny place, you may be surprised at how many things you can do in Flam.
There is a wealth of activities and experiences on offer including…
- taking a ride on the scenic Flam Railway
- learning more about the railway at the Flam Railway Museum
- getting bird’s eye view of the area from the Flam zipline
- exploring the village and surrounding area on foot or by Twizy (an electric car)
- strolling up to Flam church
- marvelling at the incredible view from the Stegastein viewpoint
- relaxing in a floating sauna at Fjordsauna
- cruising the Aurlandsfjord and Naeroyfjord
- zipping around the fjord on a high-speed RIB boat
- taking a more relaxed mode of transport and kayaking through the fjord
- hiking to the Brekkefossen waterfall
- renting a bike and exploring the local area
- learning more about Viking history and culture at a recreated Viking village in Gudvangen
- visiting the Aurland shoe factory
- enjoying a sightseeing trip on Vision of the fjords, an electric powered vessel
- doing some souvenir shopping in the village shops
- visiting the remote village of Undredal
Even just writing that I’m thinking I will probably need at least two cruises that visit Flam to see everything, maybe even three.
Popular Shore Excursions
Flam is a port that can easily be explored on foot, however, if there is an activity you really want to do, you may wish to do it via cruise line.
Some of the popular Flam shore excursions are..
Flam Railway
Often described as the most beautiful train journey in the world, the Flam railway is probably the most popular thing to do in Flam.
It is also one of the steepest railways in the world. As you wind your way through the mountains, you are surrounded by amazing views and cascading waterfalls.
The railway is 20k long and a round trip takes about two hours. This includes a 20/30 minute stop at mountain railway station Myrdal. The only other stop is at the Kjosfossen waterfall where you have a few minutes to visit the viewing platform to get a closer look.
All you need to do is sit back and enjoy the incredible scenery.
Tip: Try to sit on one side on the way up and the other side on the journey back down to Flam. This way you get to see both sides of the view
There is also a museum you can visit before or after your trip where you can learn more about the Flam Railway. You’ll find just a minutes walk away and it is free to enter.
Stegastein Viewpoint Panoramic Tour
Marvel at the beauty of Norway from a viewing platform 650 meters above the Aurlandsfjord. If the weather is on your side (and even if it is not) the view is unbeatable.
The platform stands out 30 or so meters from the mountainside giving you a unique view of the fjord and surrounding area.
Just don’t look down!
Excursions here may also include a scenic drive around (and perhaps some time to wander around) the village of Aurland.
Things to know about Flam
- The village has a population of around 350, so keep this in mind as you wander around
- Book tours in advance. Most tours have limited capacity so if there is something you are keen to do, it is recommended to book in advance.
- The weather is very changeable in the fjords. Make sure you prepare for all eventualities and then you won’t get caught out
- Norway’s official currency is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). However many places do take digital payment solutions or credit cards.
The Last Word
Flam cruise port is a highlight of a cruise around the Norwegian Fjords .
Whether you want to gaze at amazing scenery, take part in some adventurous activities or just want to relax in the mountain air, you won’t be disappointed with Flam.

Norwegian Fjords Cruises
See Baltic, Scandinavia and Norways breathtaking scenery and natural wonders
If you take a cruise with a stop in Norway, you will have the opportunity to visit the lovely port town of Flam. As they make their way through Norway and the Norwagian Fjords , a number of cruise lines make a stop at Flam as part of their itineraries. Cruises to Flam take passengers into a bustling small town that is home to a plethora of cultural sites and has a warm and inviting vibe.
Cruises to Flam, Norway
Flam attractions
Norwegian Fjords cruises depart from Flam and make their way to the picturesque town of Gudvangen in the narrow fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The express boat to Bergen departs from Flam, passing through the enchanted Sognefjord and making stops in picturesque fjord towns including Leikanger, Balestrand, and Vik . After the Bergen Railway opened in 1909, Flam served as a hub for people, mail, and freight traveling on trains between Oslo and Bergen and on steamships on the fjord. Many people consider Flamsbana, also known as the Flam Railway, to be the most breathtaking and precipitous railway in the world.
Flamsbana – the Flam Railway
The Flam Railway is often cited as “one of the world’s most spectacular train trips.” In fact, approximately 80% of the journey has a gradient of 5.5%, making it one of the world’s steepest train lines on standard rails. The route passes the Rallar Road, high mountains, gorgeous waterfalls, and 20 tunnels, and there are so many stunning vistas along the way that many passengers report feeling as though they have taken numerous trips between the mountain and the fjord. You can go from sea level at Sognefjord in Flam to 867 meters above sea level at Myrdal mountain station on Hardangervidda in under one hour on the railway.

Flåm - Norway in a nutshell

Just booked a Norwegian cruise (on Azura, so have been reading the lengthy thread about that boat nervously!)
Anyway I would like to do the Norway in a Nutshell tour at Flåm (I did this a backpacking youth in the 90s and thoroughly enjoyed it).
Comparing the P&O trip to that offered by the tourist office, it seem the fjord cruise is replaced by a coach drive. My only concern in doing this trip independently is that there are likely to be large queues for the trains with other cruise passengers and I am conscious of the need to return to the boat in time.
It will also be a shame to miss out on the boat trip, but as I am on a cruise I can live with it!
Has anyone done the Norway in a Nutshell trip independently rather than on the organised excursion? If so how did it go, specifically getting on the train.
I have to say I am leaning towards booking it through P&O if only for peace of mind. And the price difference is surprisingly modest.

I believe there are various versions of the Nutshell tour and some of them take more than a day! The P&O one is basically up the mountain and back by a different route. I have the P&O one booked for July on Aurora.
I've done the train at Flam independently of the cruise line - but that's all I did there - book the train tickets online in advance but I don't know about the other elements of the tour
We have done it with p o in 2017 enjoyed it so doing it again in June going with adult son his first time, was looking at just the train but decided it's better value to do Norway in a Nutshell as it's a lot longer and includes a meal .
Have decided to "play it safe" and go with P&O - I've heard there can be issues getting the train independently if there are a couple of ships in that day. The P&O "premium" for that tour isn't too bad so decided to go for it.
Thanks for the replies

We did a nutshell excursion with Princess cruises. Bus Flam to Voss. train Voss to Myrdal, train Myrdal to Flam. We both loved the bus drive into the Naeroy valley, it was our favourite part of the trip, (although some tours did the excursion in reverse). Lunch at the Voss hotel was excellent too. We did the boat excursion last year, but our favourite is still the drive into the valley. Hope you have a lovely time!
Thanks, I'm sure I will. It looks an acceptable alternative to the "full" Nutshell tour, and given the price of a straight round trip on the train makes sense to do. Really looking forward to this trip!
