Holland America cruise ships from newest to oldest — a complete list
What is the newest Holland America cruise ship? It's something you want to know if you're in the market for a Holland America cruise.
The newest Holland America ship is typically also the Holland America ship with the most up-to-date venues, including restaurants and bars, as well as the most up-to-date cabins and suites. It's what you want if you desire the very latest and greatest in a vessel for your Holland America cruise vacation.
The newest Holland America cruise ship currently is the 2,650-passenger Rotterdam, which also is the Holland America flagship. It debuted in October 2021.

Other relatively new Holland America ships include the 2,650-passenger Nieuw Statendam and the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam, which are sister ships to Rotterdam. They both began sailing in the last seven years.
In all, Holland America operates 11 cruise vessels. On average, the line comes out with one new ship every two to three years, but the pace of its ship rollouts is lumpy. Between 2002 and 2004, it added a ship every year, but it also went six years without a new ship between 2010 and 2016.
Holland America also recently shrunk its fleet considerably with the retirement of four older vessels .
In general, Holland America's newest ships are bigger and more amenity-packed than the oldest Holland America ships. But they're not as big as the biggest ships operated by such competitors as Celebrity Cruises and Princess Cruises . Among the seven big cruise lines that account for the majority of cruises taken by North Americans, Holland America is known for smaller and more intimate vessels.

What is the newest Holland America cruise ship?
The newest Holland America cruise ship is the 2,650-passenger Rotterdam. As noted above, it debuted in October 2021, making it less than two years old.
Measuring 99,863 gross tons, Rotterdam is tied with two slightly older sister ships (Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam) as the biggest ship in the Holland America fleet. In addition to being the newest ships in the Holland America fleet, the three vessels, collectively known as the Pinnacle class of ships, have the most amenities of the ships in the Holland America fleet.
Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Holland America cruise
Notably, in addition to a main restaurant and casual buffet, the three Pinnacle Class ships have five separate specialty dining venues — everything from a pan-Asian eatery and an Italian restaurant to a steakhouse. That's more than you'll find on other Holland America ships.
Pinnacle Class ships also have all of Holland America's signature entertainment venues — something that can't be said for the line's older vessels.
What is the oldest Holland America cruise ship?
The oldest Holland America cruise ship is the 1,432-passenger Volendam. Unveiled in 1999, it's not just the oldest Holland America ship but the smallest Holland America ship. Measuring just 61,214 gross tons, it's 39% smaller than Rotterdam and the two other Pinnacle-class vessels mentioned above.
Because of its smaller size, Volendam has fewer features and amenities than most other Holland America ships, particularly the ships of the newest Pinnacle Class and another recent group of vessels called the Signature Class.
In general, Volendam appeals to cruisers looking for a more intimate cruise experience. It also draws cruisers who care more about the destinations they visit on a cruise than onboard attractions.
What new Holland America cruise ships are coming?
Holland America currently does not have a single ship on order. The brand is owned by Carnival Corporation, which has not ordered new ships for the nine lines that it owns for several years as it focuses on paying down debt . Carnival Corporation took on an enormous about of debt during the COVID-19 pandemic to stay in business.
What is the newest class of Holland America cruise ships?
The Pinnacle Class is the newest class of Holland America ships. It's made up of three vessels: Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam.
Each of the three ships measures 99,863 gross tons and carries 2,650 passengers at double occupancy. The vessels rolled out as a series between 2016 and 2021.
As mentioned above, Pinnacle-class ships have the most venues of any Holland America ship, including all of the line's signature entertainment venues.
Specifically, on Pinnacle-class ships, you'll find one of the line's signature Music Walk live entertainment areas with a B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock).
Related: Holland America makes entertainment changes on some ships
The Pinnacle-class ships also have spectacular state-of-the-art main theaters with push-out stages enveloped by two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screens. The theaters are home to all sorts of additional music, dance and comedy performances.
The top decks of the Pinnacle-class ships have main pool areas that can be covered by a retractable glass magrodome during inclement weather. This makes these ships a good choice when booking a cruise in a destination where the weather can be iffy.
What's the difference between newer and older Holland America ships?
Newer Holland America cruise ships generally are bigger than older Holland America ships — sometimes much bigger. As a result, they have room for more onboard venues and attractions than the line's older vessels.
Holland America's older ships are as much as 39% smaller than the biggest Holland America ships and lack some features found on the bigger ships. They have a more intimate feel, and they hold fewer people. While Pinnacle-class ships can hold 2,650 passengers at double occupancy, the line's two oldest vessels (known as the R Class) are only designed to carry 1,432 passengers at double occupancy.
As a result, the oldest Holland America ships are a good choice for someone who wants to try Holland America but is looking to travel with a smaller crowd. The oldest ships in the Holland America fleet thus appeal to a subset of Holland America fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

Note that all Holland America ships are renovated and upgraded on a regular schedule every few years, so even the oldest Holland America cruise vessels have newer carpeting, updated furniture, modern decor in cabins and other updates. In many cases, they also have had entire eateries and bars renovated over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer vessels.

6 Reasons Holland America Is One Of My Favorite Cruise Lines
- Cruises and Sailing
- Types of Travel
It is so interesting how your likes change over time. The first time I took a Holland America Cruise was when my husband and I were first married and, although we enjoyed the cruise at the time, we thought, “wow!” this is really an older crowd. More recently, we took a Holland America cruise to Alaska, and now that we are in our 50s it just felt right. I enjoyed Carnival in my 20s and a Disney Cruise was a perfect fit when our children were younger. Now that I am older, many of the bells and whistles, such as waterslides, on many cruise lines are just not what I am looking for. Here are the reasons why I love Holland America.
1. Ship Size
Holland America offers spacious mid-sized ships which carry no more than 2,700 guests. This creates a more intimate cruising experience. They aren’t too big or too small. At less than 1,000 feet, the ships have more options for ports than larger ships. It is easier to find your way around the ship. I never felt I had to wait for anything on the ship and mid-sized ships seldom have lines. I also love that they look more like a historic liner versus a big box. The classic lines of the ships just add to the timeless elegance of traditional ocean travel.
2. Best Cruise Line For Alaska
Holland America has cruised Alaska longer than any other cruise line. This means they have long-term relationships across the region that enhance your stay. Explore small coastal towns, see wildlife, and enjoy at least 1 day of glacier cruising per voyage.
Alaska Up Close
Holland America launched its exclusive “ Alaska Up Close ” program which consists of three parts — Discover, Taste, and Experience Alaska. Discover Alaska through EXC Talks and Expert Led Programming. Learn from onboard naturalists and national park rangers about the natural wonders and wildlife of Alaska. The Holland America Culinary program has special features for Alaska cruises with cooking demonstrations, menu items, fresh-caught Alaska seafood, and even a Denali Brewing Company draft beer blend exclusively for Holland America. Explore with Holland America, which has long-term relationships across Alaska to provide their guests with award-winning excursions throughout the state.
Historic Operators In Glacier Bay
I will never forget cruising through Glacier Bay with the ship pulling up and then rotating 360 degrees so everyone could see this massive glacier. This was a highlight of my trip to Alaska. I spent 9 hours cruising the pristine water and listening to the national park ranger who boarded the ship at the beginning of the day. I saw whales breaching, otters and seals floating by the ship, and experienced the sound of glaciers calving. It was an incredible experience.
There are a total of 153 use-days to cruise Glacier Bay with only two ships per day. Holland America is one of two cruise lines that are historical operators under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act and, typically, the National Park Service awards the cruise lines 71 use-days. It also can compete for the remaining use days. This means more options for you to visit Glacier Bay on your Alaska cruise.
3. Luxury At Budget Prices
If you can’t afford a luxury cruise line such as Seabourn, Viking, or Regent, Holland America is a good option at a more reasonable price. You’ll find many of the amenities found on higher-end cruise lines at a much lower cost. Indulgent touches include luxurious beds and linens, Egyptian cotton towels, and the comfy bathrobes seen in upscale hotels. The impeccable service is due to almost one crew member for every two guests. Complimentary room service is available for even the lowest cabin category. Food and wine aboard Holland America ships can compete with the top luxury cruise lines. (See more in Food and Wine).
4. Food And Wine
Dining on a Holland America Cruise is fabulous due to the Holland America Line Culinary Council. It includes an elite team of seven world-renowned chefs who bring global influence and their expertise to planning the menus for the cruise line. Each has diverse culinary interests which inspire the signature dishes. Onboard is a talented executive chef who is a member of the prestigious Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, an international food and wine society. Onboard, you will find everything from casual dining by the pool to elegant specialty restaurants. Much of the cuisine is regionally inspired.
Specialty restaurants onboard incur additional fees that are so worth it. I still remember dining at the Pinnacle Grill, a steakhouse. It ranked with the best steakhouses I’ve eaten at onshore. The service was impeccable, and the 28-day wet-aged USDA Prime steaks were almost fork tender. David Burke, a James Beard award-winning chef, as well as a Holland America Culinary Council member, has created innovative recipes that enhance the quality ingredients. Imagine a beautifully plated beef tenderloin served with lobster dumplings and a celery root puree with a lobster bearnaise and a horseradish bordelaise sauce. The Pinnacle Grill is a more intimate setting and, combined with the beautifully plated meals exquisitely prepared, it made for a very memorable meal and one I will repeat on my next cruise.
Wine lovers can enhance their education and enrich their journey with an extensive wine list carefully selected by world-renowned wine critic James Suckling, wine curator for Holland America. He has over 30 years of experience and has created James Suckling’s Guide to Great Wines , which is available across the entire fleet. He hand selects only wines that scored 90 points or more and a few 100-point perfect wines. You can select from a wide range of champagnes, rosés, reds, and whites.
I love that there are many onboard opportunities for cooking demonstrations and tastings. Also, on each voyage, Holland America brings aboard a guest chef to help you learn about the culinary traditions in the ports you will be cruising to. Attend a food and wine tasting or a fine dining event (extra fee) to learn more about the local cuisine. Guest chefs will also lead culinary tours through local markets. Imagine shopping for French pastries in Tahiti or heading into the Thai countryside in search of the best Pad Thai.
5. Multi-Million Dollar Art Collection On Each Ship
I love art and a beautiful interior design that is more elegant than the Las Vegas-style on many cruise lines. Holland America delivers with stunning, sophisticated interiors adorned with a curated art collection on each ship. Rotterdam, the fleet’s newish vessel, has an art collection valued at more than $4.1 million. It is curated by the Oslo-based YSA Design and the London-based ArtLink in partnership with hospitality design atelier Tihany Design. With 2,645 works valued from $500–$620,000, it is virtually a museum at sea. I love the diversity of the collection which represents 37 nationalities among the artists.
6. Catholic Mass
For practicing Catholics, having a priest onboard for church services is a plus. Unlike many Christian denominations, we are required to attend Mass on Sundays. This often enters my decision-making process for planning a vacation. Holland America is the only cruise line (other cruise lines have a priest for holidays or special cruises) to have a Catholic priest on board every ship for daily and Sunday services. It’s such a plus for the Catholic crew members who are far from home for months at a time.

Only Carnival's cruise guests will be able to vacation at this $500 million private resort — take a sneak peek
Posted: February 15, 2024 | Last updated: February 15, 2024
- Carnival Cruise Line's new private destination, Celebration Key, is set to open in July 2025.
- The $500 million project is set to feature resort-like amenities and host 2 million guests a year.
- Cruise line-run private islands have been big moneymakers for operators like Carnival and Royal Caribbean.
One of Carnival Cruise Line’s upcoming $500 million projects has the potential to become a massive money tree for the popular operator.
And no, it’s not a cruise ship. It’s a mile-long slice of beachfront land on Grand Bahama island . Carnival is turning the land into its own private destination.
The cruise line says this slice of the Bahamas — dubbed Celebration Key — is set to flex resort-like amenities, including cabanas by the ocean and an infinity pool at the adults-only club.
But would-be visitors will have to be patient: It's not scheduled to begin welcoming cruisers until July 2025.
Carnival has kept many of Celebration Key’s details under wraps
But we do know the designated family area is expected to have a massive freshwater lagoon, a children's water play area, two waterslides, and sports courts.
Adults who need a break from rowdy kids can also expect their own section of Celebration Key
The adult-friendly retreat, separate from the previously noted club, is expected to have another lagoon outfitted with a swim-up bar and a DJ.
Both the family and adult areas are expected to have rentable cabanas . (Or guests could save that money and spend it at Celebration Key's shopping center instead.)
We're still a year from its planned debut, but the destination is already listed in more than 500 upcoming itineraries on 18 of Carnival’s 26 ships
Cruises set to visit the destination currently start at $220 per person for a roundtrip Miami three-day sailing on the Carnival Conquest in October 2025.
The vacation-at-sea operator says the island is expected to be capable of accommodating 2 million guests annually. In the future, it plans to expand Celebration Key with zip lines and waterparks, Carnival said.
But it's not the affordable cruise line’s only land-based venture
Carnival also owns the smaller Half Moon Cay, a resort-like private island in the Bahamas, that has activities like horseback riding and swimming with stingrays.
The island is now being updated with an additional berth to accommodate the cruise line's biggest ships.
There’s a good reason the cruise giant is going all-in on its land-based portfolio: Private islands can be cash cows for operators like Carnival and Royal Caribbean.
Guests can splurge on these exclusive destinations' paid excursions, boosting the cruise line's profits.
And in the case of Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key, these stops are near Florida's major cruise ports, decreasing visiting ships' travel times and fuel costs.
For some operators, these exclusive ports could also become a necessity.
An increasing number of cities worldwide have been restricting cruise ship access. In other cases, several of the industry's new mega-ships have outgrown some ports.
To recoup these lost stops, cruise lines can just turn to their in-house destinations — outfitted with up-charged amenities like waterparks and desirable beachfront villas.

The 15 Best Cruise Lines
Which cruise line is the best.
Cruising is a popular way of traveling for many people, offering a unique experience that combines the convenience of a floating hotel with the excitement of visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard" and set sail on an amazing vacation.
There are many different cruise lines to choose from, and each one offers a different type of experience. Some are geared towards families, while others are more focused on luxury or adventure. What would you like to see and do while you're onboard? Is a casino a must-have or a rather-avoid? Would a Broadway-caliber show tip the scales for you? Do you need a wide range of activities to keep the kiddos happy while the adults live it up or relax? The onboard activities and amenities can really make or break your vacation, so be sure you know what you're getting.
Cruise Line FAQ
Which cruise line is the best, what is included in the cost of a cruise, what is the minimum age to cruise, what are the dining options on a cruise ship, are cruise ships crowded, do i have to dress up, are activities included at destination ports, can i bring my own alcohol onboard.
Continued from above...
Another factor that can influence which cruise line you choose is the itinerary. Cruise ships travel all over the world, but some cruise lines may not have destinations available where you're hoping to go. You should also consider the size of the ship: larger ships offer more amenities, but smaller ships can access ports that bigger ships can't.
Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.
When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.
While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.
Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:
- Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
- Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
- Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Find out if the cruise line you're considering lines up in reality with what they advertise.
Here at Top Consumer Reviews, cruising is one of our favorite ways to travel and experience new things. And with so many different cruise lines to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. But, don't worry: take a look at our in-depth analysis of today's most popular options, find the one that's the best match for your vacation ideas and your travel party, and book that trip you've been dreaming of. Maybe???? 😀
If the ingredients are at the bar, and the bartender knows how to make the drink, you will be able to get it.
If the bartender doesn't know how to make the drink, but you can provide directions, then you can have it made, too. Again, so long as the ingredients are there, the bartender will make anything you want.
Thanks- appreciate the reply but wondering if someone has specific info as to whether they do have the ingredients ...

In that case, it might be helpful if you itemized the ingredients. People might not recognize that particular drink, but know about the things that are in it.
Vodka, ginger beer and lime juice. It is likely that the ship would substitute ginger ale for the ginger beer.

They also will not have the copper cup which is a must for a Moscow Mule IMHO.

Hi Taxmantoo!
Your absolutely right! Unfortunately on our cruise to the Med on The Nieuw Amsterdam last September they tried in the Ocean Bar with subsitute ginger ale, no
Copper cup! 😞 Did not taste at all like one!
Hope they have ginger beer for you! My DH said I should bring a copper cup next time LOL!
bluesplayer
You can bring your own ginger beer and copper cup.. tada . Moscow Mules
bluesplayer I am so down with that!!
Doing that this February for sure on our month cruise on The Maasdam.
Actually Ginger Beer has alcohol so per HAL policy it cannot be brought on board. There would be no problem with the copper cup
Your right called HAL. I also figured that.
I got copper mule cups from Wm. Sonoma
A few years go, we do our own mules when we have a party. I'll pass on HAL.
Moscow Mule Recipe
- Pour vodka and lime juice into a mug; add ice cubes and ginger beer. Stir to combine.
- Substitute ginger ale if there is no ginger beer available.
- Drop a lime wedge into the mug for garnish.
This drink was concocted by the Smirnoff (America) company to entice more people to drink more of their vodka.
People in Russia have never heard of it.
Ideally served in a chilled copper mug - but it will taste exactly the same if served in any other container.
This is basically a vodka daiquiri with a splash of ginger. Just about any bartender on planet earth can make it for you.

I've purchased loads of ginger "beer" over the years, and it has not been alcoholic.
Murray's Pop
Agree. Goslings is my favorite. Dark and Stormy with Goslings dark rum.

I purchased several bottles of ginger beer in Bermuda in May. Was not alcoholic and had zero problem bringing it back on Veendam.
Today's brewed ginger beers are categorized as non-alcoholic drinks because their alcohol content is less than 0.5 percent , which meets FDA requirements. Since ginger beers are naturally fermented, they have less carbonation and often develop a beer-like head when poured into a glass. Bring the FDA classification as non alcoholic

Holland America Line ( HAL) is a US-owned cruise line, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc headquartered in Seattle, Washington, United States.
Our first HAL cruise was on Statendam in 2011, and we felt it was just a bit small for us. We've found ourslves very comfortable on Holland America lately, and have no further plans to cruise on Carnival. Our last cruise (14 night Southern Caribbean on Pride in January, 2019) was quite a let down, as they've cut back too far on staff.
In some cases, Holland America's oldest cruise ships — those built in the late 1990s and early 2000s — are as much as 39% smaller than the line's newest vessels and have fewer venues on board. Here, every Holland America cruise ship currently in operation is ranked from newest to oldest: 1. Rotterdam.
