The Best Road Trips You Need to Take in the UAE

Hajar Mountains

The United Arab Emirates may not be a big country, but there’s plenty to be seen in between its desert dunes and beautiful shores. The best part is that everything is just a short drive away. So whether one is looking to indulge in some water adventures or simply relax in a luxurious resort in the middle of the desert, all that’s needed is a car, gas and some snacks for the road. The journey just might be better than the destination.

1. jebel al jais.

For those who enjoy hiking, trekking and camping, there’s no place in the UAE better than Jebel Al Jais. Located right in the corner in between the UAE and Oman, Jebel Al Jais is the highest point at the country, at over 1,800 meters. Perhaps one of the things that makes this spot so popular is the shocking temperature difference compared to the rest of the country, which is known for being extremely hot. Here, temperatures can get as low as -5 degrees Celsius, so it’s important to pack accordingly.

2. Snoopy Island

Fujairah is one of the seven Emirates of the UAE, and the only one on the east coast. Located in between gorgeous beaches and mountains, this is definitely a must-see on a road trip from Dubai or Abu Dhabi. One of the main attractions in Fujairah is Snoopy Island, where you can snorkel.

3. Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is soon to be the UAE’s main destination for all adrenaline lovers. This is because the longest zip line in the world will be located in this Emirate. However, Ras Al Khaimah was popular among residents and tourists much before the zip line was announced. The city makes for the perfect weekend getaway, with a vast number of beach resorts as well as exciting activities, including Ghost Town, an abandoned village that’s believed to be haunted. 5. Hajar Mountains

The UAE is best known for its riches and luxury, but for those looking for a real adventure, the Hajar Mountains provide a contrast to the city and the hike of a lifetime! They’re located in both the UAE and Oman, meaning that hikers need their passports to cross the border. The Hajar Mountains are the ideal destination for rock climbing and trekking. Visitors are also welcome to camp. Hajar Mountains

Desert Resorts

The UAE has no shortage of luxurious resorts a short drive from the city, for those travelers who aren’t into camping. Admire the desert dunes and feel completely removed from the cities. Some of the most renowned are Al Maha and Bab Al Shams . Both also offer activities that are meant to honor Emirati culture as well as entertain, such as riding camels.

6. Sir Bani Yas Island

This is undoubtedly the ultimate road trip in the UAE. Getting to Sir Bani Yas Island doesn’t only involve driving, but also taking a boat or a plane from Abu Dhabi to the island. Sir Bani Yas Island only has one hotel, the Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara , so comfort and luxury is guaranteed. Additionally, the island is home to the Arabian Wildlife Park , with a variety of wild animals residing there, including giraffes and cheetahs! Sir Bani Yas Island, Abu Dhabi

5 Stunningly Scenic UAE Road Trips to try

Are you ready to hit the road this winter and explore more of the United Arab Emirates? Getting behind the wheel is the best way to explore the UAE beyond the big cities.

united arab emirates road trip

Although not a huge country, once you leave the city, some quite diverse landscapes can be explored in the UAE. No need for a luxury supercar or a 4×4 to complete most of these road trips.

Set your Google Maps, and let’s drive!

If you are setting off in the hotter summer months, make sure you read this important guide to driving in the desert heat to make sure you and your vehicle are prepared.

Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah

Drive time from dubai 2 hours (abu dhabi 3 hours).

Don’t be mistaken into thinking Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah is just for your adventure seekers. Whilst yes, it’s famously home to the world’s longest zip line, incredible Via Ferrata and the Jais Sky Maze, the windy mountainous drive also rewards you with some stunning panoramic views.

The paved road has been extended all the way to the peak now and has a new viewing platform at the 1,934m summit of the UAE’s tallest peak.

united arab emirates road trip

Temperatures on Jebel Jais can be as much as 10c cooler than on the coast, making it an inviting summer driving option – and conversely, in winter, you may even get to experience snow!

You can complement a drive up to Jebel Jais with a weekend in one of these luxurious RAK Family Resorts.

Staying overnight in RAK may be your preferred option if you want to see the tantalizingly beautiful sunrise from the peak – a truly special memory of your time in the UAE. Just remember you are still looking at about a 1-hour drive from the Al Hamra area of RAK to the peak.

Hatta, Dubai

Drive time from dubai 90 minutes (abu dhabi 2 hours 40 minutes).

A nice easy one for Dubai residents which you can manage in even half a day. Hatta has a really interesting past; actually a Dubai enclave (one of several in the UAE), it sits entirely inside the Emirate of Sharjah -though it was once, in fact, an Omani enclave until the 1850’s!

From the road, you are unlikely to see much of a difference as you pass through the Emirates.

Hatta Dam Dubai

The Hatta Heritage Village has had a significant facelift in recent years and a lot more recreational facilities have been added at Wadi Hub and Wadi Dam. Whilst not all of these are available in the hottest summer months, you can still stop for lunch in town or head to Cafe Gazebo at JA Hatta Fort Hotel. Hatta is a popular mountain escape even in the hotter summer months as it tends to be a few degrees cooler than the city.

If you want to make it an overnight stop, there is everything from camping to glamping and luxury resorts in the winter. The Sedr Trailers and Damani Lodges close from May to October however you can still enjoy family resort JA Hatta Fort Hotel .

Khasab and the Musandam Peninsular, Oman

Driving time from dubai 2.5 hours (abu dhabi 3.5 hours).

Arguably the most stunning of all the drives on this page is the Ras Al Khaimah to Kahsab , Musandam drive. There is a good reason this tiny Omani region has the nickname “Norway of Arabia” with stunning fjords dramatically meeting the sea, yet somehow the road in many places manages to dramatically hang to the cliff faces. It is certainly not a drive for the faint-hearted!

Khasab Road

In the summer months, it is likely to be too hot to get out on the water near the Strait of Hormuz, but there is a small fort and the harbour area to explore in Khasab. You can find our full guide on things to do in Khasab here.

If you set off early it is possible to reach Khasab and back in a day from Dubai, but to truly take in everything this stunning region has to offer, an overnight stay is really essential.

Things to know about driving to Oman from the UAE

Assuming that borders are re-opened between the UAE and Oman, we have a detailed guide of things to consider for a border crossing into the Musandam Peninsula here .

Driving time to Khasab can vary significantly depending on when you are making your crossing. Over popular public holiday weekends, the border crossing process can take much longer so add another hour or two to these time estimates, and some patience!

Jebel Hafeet, Al Ain

Driving time from dubai & abu dhabi 1 hour 50 minutes.

Yet more mountains in the UAE? Yes! Jebel Hafeet proudly stands at 1,240m high and is the highest point in Abu Dhabi Emirate – standing quite separate from the Hajar Mountains that dominate the country’s east coast.

From the city of Al Ain below, you can take on the steep mountain climb to the summit with an incredible 60 turns on this full paved, 3-lane drive. There are plentiful overtaking spots and playpark stops along the way and a small eatery and park at the summit where you can marvel for miles over the open desert plains into Oman.

The winding road up Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi

After your descent from Jebel Hafeet, pop into the lush springs you likely spied from above Green Mubazzarah.

If you’re looking to make an overnight trip of it, the Mecure Grand Jebel Hafeet is the only hotel actually on Jebel Hafeet; otherwise, check out these options for family resorts at reasonable prices in Al Ain .

Liwa Oasis Desert Drive

Drive time from dubai 3 hours, 20 mins (abu dhabi 2 hours 25 mins).

You will want a 4×4 to get the most out of this one, as you will be taken deep into the empty quarter. The summer months can be a little brutal for this excursion, so best arranged in the cooler winter months when camping amongst the dreamy red dunes is possible.

Liwa Oasis Abu Dhabi emirate

If you’re not so keen on pitching a tent, don’t worry, as nearby you can find luxury resorts, including Anantara Qasr al Sarab and Tilal Liwa .

Jebel hafeet.

THE EMPTY QUARTER

Driving time from Abu Dhabi: 2 hours 50 minutes

Leave civilisation behind and drive south of the capital to Liwa and the mighty Rub’ al Khali. Transverse over jet black roads that wind their way through the most hypnotising of sceneries. This is a true UAE desert road trip that offers up miles upon miles of shifting sand dunes. But despite its name, The Empty Quarter provides plenty of entertainment. From dune bashing on the world’s largest dune, Moreeb Dune to discovering a special oasis at Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara , this UAE road trip is a must do for anyone who loves to drive.

Driving time from Abu Dhabi: 1 hour 50 minutes

Easily reachable from the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, this two-hour UAE road trip is one of the most underrated in the country. Located close to Jebel Hafeet, you can tick off two road trips in one journey if you so wish.

Driving time from Abu Dhabi: 2 hours 40 minutes

Swap the tall buildings and bright lights of the city and head out to the scenic, mountainous area of Hatta . A two-hour and 40-minute drive from the nation’s capital, this gorgeous, heritage village is perfect for road trippers in search of an adrenaline rush. Open during the cooler months of the year, The Hatta Wadi Hub activity centre offers day trippers an opportunity to try their hand at a number of entertaining activities like mountain biking, kayaking, archery, axe throwing, zorbing and anyone who loves to be outdoors. But if you prefer life in the slow lane, head to the calming waters of Hatta Dam where you can kayak on crystal blue waters or head to the mountains for a refreshing hike.

Now Sharjah mightn’t be the first place we think of when it comes to the best UAE road trips but it does have a journey with a worthwhile destination awaiting at the conclusion. A tiny fishing village, Kalba offers lush mangroves that are heaving with wildlife that can be explored via kayak, the Kalba Bird of Prey Centre where you can learn about the importance of the falcon to Bedouin society and the restored heritage house of Bait Sheikh Saeed Bin Hamad Al Qasimi.

RAS AL KHAIMAH

Driving time from Abu Dhabi: 3 hours 28 minutes

Ras Al Khaimah is known as the adventure capital of the UAE thanks to its natural qualities that facilitate incredible outdoor experiences. One of the longer UAE road trips from Abu Dhabi, usually clocking in around 3 hours and 28 minutes, you can check out the incredible Hajar mountain range and experience all its wonderful amenities including the Middle East’s toboggan ride which reaches speeds up to 40km/h or leave terra firma and zoom along the world’s longest zipline.

Driving time from Abu Dhabi: 1 hour 20 minutes

Nestling between the Hajar Mountains and replete with memorising blue waters and pristine, golden beachfront , Fujairah is a dream place for those who adorn taking to the big blue. The Dibba region is famed for its calm waters that are perfect for paddle boarding but if you want to get close to nature, head a further 20 minutes up the road for arguably the best place to go snorkelling in the UAE at Snoopy Island. And being only a 1 hour and 20-minute drive from Abu Dhabi, you can enjoy the pleasures of Fujairah and be back in the capital by tea time.

Driving time from Abu Dhabi: 4 hours

OK, we are technically bending the rules on this road trip as this wonderful peninsula is a part of Oman. However, due to its location on the northern tip of the Emirates and its sheer beauty, we have decided to make an exception. A four-hour drive from Abu Dhabi, this UAE road trip enchants road roamers with mountainous backdrops and sparkling fjords. Known as the ‘Norway of the Middle East’, you rent a traditional dhow to go out on the water and catch some playful dolphins frolicking.

Incredible Road Trips In The UAE For First-Timers

' data-src=

Road-tripping in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) offers an exciting blend of historic attractions, modern marvels, and breathtaking natural landscapes.

Embarking on a road trip through the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is an extraordinary journey that unveils a land of captivating contrasts. From the bustling metropolis of Dubai, where futuristic skyscrapers pierce the sky, to the timeless desert landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see, the UAE offers a road tripper’s paradise.

As you traverse the well-maintained highways and venture off the beaten path, you’ll discover a nation steeped in rich history, adorned with architectural marvels, and graced with natural wonders waiting to be explored. So, fasten your seatbelt and get ready for an exhilarating road trip adventure that will lead you through a tapestry of culture, luxury, and awe-inspiring scenery in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula.

Best Time to Visit the UAE

How to get around in the uae, from dubai to abu dhabi: modern wonders, the northern emirates: mountains, forts, and coastlines, al ain: the garden city and historic oasis, the desert adventure: liwa oasis and the empty quarter, finding fjords in the musandam peninsula.

Situated on the Arabian Peninsula, facing the Persian Gulf to the north and Oman Sea to the east, the United Arab Emirates has a hot, desert climate. With blistering hot summers, undoubtedly, the best time to take a road trip in the UAE is during the milder winter weather, broadly speaking November to April.

During the winter, it is usually clear, bright blue sky days and mild temperatures, rainfall is rare. Should you face thunderstorms or treacherous conditions in the UAE, however, it is best not to hit the roads as flash flooding can occur and many drivers are not used to such conditions, making it hazardous for everyone.

The busiest time of year for visiting the UAE is over the Christmas-New Year break and spring break time (around March and April ); plan accommodation in advance accordingly.

Also, take note of religious occasions such as Ramadan and Eid when planning your UAE visit dates. On public holiday weekends you’ll find the attractions we mention in this article exceptionally busier; if you’re visiting from overseas, Monday to Thursday will be much quieter days to take a road trip around the UAE.

With most public transport in the UAE limited to the big cities and Intercity buses, the best way to truly explore the United Arad Emirates is to hire a car and get out on the road.

We recommend DiscoverCars.Com to search across different providers for a hire car – give it a try here:

It’s important to bear in mind that city driving in Dubai especially can be tough. There are large multi-lane freeways that move FAST, multi-lane roundabouts, truck lanes and fast lanes to think about. Some top pointers for playing it safe on UAE roads:

  • Driving in the UAE is on the right-hand side of the road, the steering wheel on the left.
  • If your drivers licence is not in English or Arabic, you will need an International Drivers Permit.
  • Road signs are all written in English and Arabic.
  • The sign posted maximum speed limits have 20km leeway before you receive a fine, so you will find that traffic in the left-hand lanes will move faster than the posted limits; stick to the middle lane if you’re unsure (the right lanes are usually reserved for slow-moving heavy trucks and buses).
  • Take on board these safety tips for driving in desert conditions if you’ll be leaving the major cities
  • All the drives we explain here can be tackled in an ordinary 2WD vehicle; it’s not recommended to go off-roading into the desert or wadis in the UAE unless you’re with other experienced drivers or as part of a tour.

Best Road Trips in UAE

Although you can set out from anywhere in the UAE to commence your road trip, we will assume you are starting from Downtown Dubai when calculating time and distance.

  • Distance: 140 kms / 87 miles
  • Time Needed: 4 hours to 2 days

Starting with the most popular and easy to reach day trip destination from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital city is home to stunning architecture and thrilling adventures.

The number one attraction in the UAE is visiting the impressive Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Other architecturally brilliant buildings we would recommend include The Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island and Qasr Al Watan, the country’s Presidential Palace.

The sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi

History buffs, make time in your road trip to see the city’s oldest building Qasr Al Hosn, and for nature lovers, the Jubail Mangrove Walk on Jubail Island is a must-see.

Outside of the city you’ll be glad to have your own wheels to see the more remote parts of the Emirate. Al Wathba Fossil Dunes are fascinating sand dune formations and nearby you’ll find the utterly instargammable Al Wathba Salt Lake – Google Map them for exact pin drops!

And not forgetting the kids, theme park buffs will love a day on Yas Island. With 4 family theme parks including SeaWorld, Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi and Yas Waterworld, you will not run short of kid-friendly activities in Abu Dhabi .

Whilst a simple visit down the road to the Grand Mosque and back could be achieved in under 4 hours on a round trip from Dubai, we recommend you dedicate at least 2 to 3 days of your UAE itinerary to exploring Abu Dhabi if time will allow.

Where to stay: For beach vibes, you want one of the stunning resorts that line Saadiyat Beach , or for convenience to the theme parks and Abu Dhabi Airport, stay on Yas Island .

  • Distance: 113 kms / 70 miles
  • Time Needed: 4 hours to 1-2 days

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), sitting to the northeast of Dubai has earned itself the reputation of the Adventure Emirate. From sea to sky-high mountains (yes, there’s a mountain range in this desert country!) you can enjoy many unique experiences on a trip to Ras al Khaimah.

Whilst perhaps more famous in recent years for its string of fancy waterfront resorts, Ras Al Khaimah is home to the tallest peak in the country Jebel Jais, in the Hajar Mountains which run the entire length of the country’s east coast and all through the east coast of Oman.

Winding mountain road up the tallest peak Jebel Jais in Ras al Khaimah, UAE

The spectacular 30-kilometer tarmacked mountain drive, full of switchbacks and steep inclines is one of the most spectacular scenic driving roads in the country.

Near the peak of Jebel Jais, this is an outdoor adventure lover’s paradise with the opportunity to take on the longest zipline in the world. There are additionally aerial ropes courses, Via Ferrata and many more adrenaline-pumping adventures .

Where to stay: If budget permits, The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah Al Wadi Desert is one of the best desert resorts in the UAE. Closer to the beach, you’ll find a great range of accommodation options on Marjan Island.

  • Distance: 145 kms / 90 miles
  • Time Needed: 6 hours to a full day

The historic Oasis City of Al Ain, also known as the Garden City has a reputation as the birth place of the UAE, where the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed was born.

The drive itself to Al Ain is a relatively straight forward freeway drive from Dubai in around 90 minutes; its the fascinating adventures that await when you arrive make it best to have your own car.

The centre of town is dominated by the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al Ain Oasis, a 1,200 hectare shaded park with over 147,000 date palm trees and demonstrating the traditional falaj watering system. Other historic sites dating back to the bronze age are dotted around the city outskirts.

Al Ain oasis in the UAE

The Al Ain Zoo is also highly acclaimed as one of the cities best attractions. With the addition of a safari a few years ago this makes for a fascinating desert adventure that kids and adults alike will enjoy.

The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre within the zoo is one of the best educational and history resources in the country if you want to learn about the ancient heritage and physical geography of the Arabian Peninsula.

Plenty of other museums also wait you in Al Ain; for history buffs the Al Ain Palace Museum and the Al Jahili Fort are must-stops. You can also check in to the the more modern Qasr al Mawaji , birth home of the former UAE President and ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa.

The highlight for drivers, though, is the climb to the top of Jebel Hafeet, the tallest point in Abu Dhabi Emirate. The steep drive from Green Mubazzarah (a park with natural springs) at the mountain to the peak will take around 30 minutes each way, winding to the top and offering spectacular views over to Oman.

Where to stay: Although a little dated these days, the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet on top of Jebel Hafeet affords you some incredible scenic views. We like the Al Ain Rotana for a good city stay close to the Al Ain Oasis, or adventure seekers will love the glamping options at Jebel Hafit Desert Park.

  • Distance: 335 kilometres / 208 miles
  • Time Needed: full day – overnight

If you’re up for an Arabian Nights style adventure into the desert dunes then this road trip into the Liwa Desert is for you.

It’s not called the Empty Quarter without reason, swathes of desert which make up the vast majority of the land mass of the UAE are only accessible via a few well maintained paved roads that take guests into a complete different side of the Emirates.

Those with a 4WD and the right equipment can take on the vast dunes or for a more sedate experience, try one of the luxury resorts of glamping options to experience the incredibly star lit nights and days.

freshly paves road through the liwa desert

If you feel that any of the landscape looks familiar, the Liwa desert is part of the backdrop for the planet Jakku in Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

NB it’s not recommended to drive in the Liwa Desert in the peak heat of the day, you should look to explore early morning and late afternoons/evenings. Off-roading is only for those who really know what they’re doing sand driving.

Where to stay : Unmissable is a night in Anantara Qasr al Sarab Desert Resort , the ultimate of luxurious desert experiences in the UAE (or anywhere in he world, for that matter). Those on a smaller budget could try spending the night near Madinat Zayed in the Tilal Liwa Desert Retreat , or try the new glamping experience at Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa .

judging at a camel beauty pageant, al dhafra united arab emirates

Top Tip : Visiting the western region during the Al Dhafra Festival (dates vary annually but usually around December/January) you could get the opportunity to see a camel beauty pageant! No laughing matter, this is serious business and one for the most unique experiences in the UAE where you will see owners competing for millions In prize money at the coverted Al Mazayan. Watch camels being traded on Millionaires Row and soak in the atmosphere and this traditional Bedouin event

  • Distance: 197 kms / 122 miles

How do you fancy taking on a whole new country during your road trip from Dubai? The drive from Dubai to Khasab on the Musandam Peninsula sees you at the very tip of the Arabian peninsula, just 40 kms from Iran over the Strait of Hormuz!

Despite driving much of the way through the United Arab Emirates, Musandam is actually an exclave of Oman. You will be crossing an international border, so visas and passports will be required and proof of vehicle ownership with permission to cross the border is required (make sure if you’re hiring a car that this is included!)

  • There’s a great detailed guide here exactly how to cross the border into Oman from the UAE

coastal road around a peninsula in Musandam, Oman

Whilst the drive through northern Ras Al Khaimah can feel a little industrial, the moment you cross the Al Darah border, you enter the most incredible coastal journey. The highway winds its way around the rocky khors.

Once you are in Khasab, kick back and relax as life moves a lot slower here. The regional capital is very small, but the starting point of fabulous cruising into the khors (mountainous fjords). You can join a dolphin-watching tour or hire your own private dhow for a serene adventure out on the water, even find your own private beach.

Top Tip: Avoid heading out on this journey Friday afternoon and coming back on a Sunday night as you are you’ll likely encounter long queues at the border crossing when local residents also take to the road. Remember accommodation options are limited so its highly recommended to pre-book if you want to stay overnight in Khasab.

More Tips For Visiting the UAE

  • Check you have the right visa for entering the UAE. Many nationalities can enter the UAE with a free Visa on arrival but don’t get caught out; equally if you’ll be crossing into Oman be aware most nationalities will require a Visa .
  • With the fast-pace nature of construction in the UAE, roads can change quickly! Navigation apps are generally up to date, and you could get by with just Google Maps, though many locally prefer to use Waze as the best navigation app for the UAE ( Google Play | App Store ).
  • Be mindful that you can lose mobile reception once you leave the big towns and major freeways, we recommend you keep an offline map on your phone.
  • If heading beyond the cities, remember to fuel up when you can. Despite being an oil-rich country, you may be surprised there are no fuel stations when you need one in the more remote corners of the country!

Overall, these road trips offer a unique and exciting way to explore the different regions of the UAE. Whether you're interested in culture, history, nature, or adventure, there's something for everyone on these road trips. Just remember to always drive safely and follow local traffic laws.

UAE: traffic regulations

UAE follows right-hand traffic. There exist many dusty roads and paths in this Middle Eastern country; therefore, those travellers who would like to have a more pleasant experience can go for a 4x4 off-road vehicle that will make their journey slightly more convenient.

The minimum driving age is 18, but the minimum driving age if you want to rent a vehicle is 21. Unfortunately, some car rental companies tend to apply extra charges in case of young drivers. You’ll be required to be as old as 25 in order to rent a car.

UAE implements strict regulations concerning drinking and driving. Since it is a Muslim country, there is zero tolerance for any blood alcohol level. The penalties include severe on-the-spot fines, jail, and even deportation.

What’s more, avoid driving and talking on your mobile phone. Instead, invest in a hands-free set or make sure that the car rental company provides you with one.

UAE is characterised by very humid weather and high temperatures. That’s why it’s recommended to always have plenty of water with you in case of a car accident or a breakdown.

UEA: required documents

The documents that you should carry while travelling around UAE are: driver’s licence and an International Driving Permit. It’s also useful to carry insurance documents, registration documents, and your ID. During a routine check up, you can be asked to show one of these documents or even the whole set.

UAE: speed limits

The speed limits in UAE are: 80 km/h in built-up areas and 100-120 km/h for some of the main roads. There exists also a leeway of 20 km/h for some roads. Speed camera warning devices in UAE are seen as illegal; therefore, the easiest way to avoid a ticket is to stick to the prevailing speed limits. For minor offences, you can receive on the spot fines which vary depending on the traffic offence that you’ve committed. UAE have both fixed and mobile speed cameras. Speed limits are very strictly enforced in all emirates.

UAE: toll roads

There are a number of toll roads in UAE, for example the Sheikh Zayed Road. Additionally, the Al Garhoud Bridge is also a paid road section. For more information, you can ask at the car rental company of your choice.

When taking a Road Trip in UAE

If you're planning a road trip in the UAE, there are a few things to be aware of to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Traffic laws: It's essential to familiarize yourself with local traffic laws and regulations in the UAE. The country has strict rules for speeding, reckless driving, and drunk driving, and penalties for breaking these laws can be severe. Be sure to always wear a seatbelt, use turn signals, and obey speed limits.

Road conditions: While the UAE has well-maintained roads and highways, some roads in rural areas can be narrow and winding. Be cautious when driving on unfamiliar roads and watch out for sudden changes in road conditions, such as speed bumps or roundabouts. Also, be aware of the weather conditions and avoid driving during sandstorms or heavy rain.

Car rental: If you're renting a car, be sure to choose a reputable company and inspect the vehicle thoroughly before driving off. Check the car for any damages, make sure all safety features are working correctly, and ensure that the car has valid registration and insurance.

Navigation: Make sure to have a reliable GPS or map on hand to help navigate the roads. Be aware that some areas in the UAE may not have street signs or may have signs in Arabic only. It's also a good idea to download an offline map in case you lose your internet connection.

Cultural sensitivities: The UAE is a Muslim country, and visitors should be respectful of local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when visiting mosques or other religious sites, and avoid public displays of affection.

Heat and hydration: The UAE can get extremely hot, especially during the summer months. Make sure to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks to avoid heat exhaustion or dehydration.

By being aware of these factors, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable road trip experience in the UAE. Don't forget to have fun, explore the different regions of the country, and take in stunning sights and attractions along the way.

Best Time for taking a Road Trip in UAE

The best time of year for taking a road trip in the UAE is during the cooler months, from November to April. During this time, the weather is pleasant, with temperatures ranging from around 20°C to 30°C, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. This is also the peak tourist season in the UAE, so you can expect more crowds and higher prices for accommodation and other travel services.

During the summer months, from May to October, the UAE experiences scorching temperatures that can reach up to 50°C, making it uncomfortable for outdoor activities and even walking around outside. In addition, there is a higher chance of sandstorms and humidity during this time, which can make driving more challenging.

If you plan to take a road trip during the peak tourist season, it's essential to book your accommodation and rental car in advance, as availability can be limited. Also, keep in mind that some attractions and outdoor activities may have limited hours or be closed during the summer months due to the extreme heat.

Overall, the best time to take a road trip in the UAE is during the cooler months of November to April, when the weather is comfortable, and there are plenty of attractions and activities to enjoy. Just remember to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and follow local traffic laws and regulations for a safe and enjoyable journey.

How expensive is a Road Trip in UAE

The cost of a road trip in the UAE can vary depending on several factors such as the season, the length of the trip, the type of accommodation, the activities you plan to do, and the number of people traveling.

On average, you can expect to spend around $100 to $200 per day per person on a road trip in the UAE, which includes accommodation, food, transportation, and activities. However, this can vary significantly depending on your travel style and budget.

If you're looking to save money, there are plenty of budget-friendly accommodation options such as hostels or budget hotels, which can cost as low as $25 to $50 per night. Similarly, you can save money on food by opting for local street food or cooking your meals if you have access to a kitchen.

Renting a car in the UAE can cost around $25 to $50 per day, depending on the type of car you choose and the rental company. It's important to note that some rental companies may require an international driving permit or a minimum age limit of 25 years.

For a week-long road trip in the UAE, you can expect to spend around $700 to $1,400 per person, while a month-long trip can cost anywhere from $3,000 to $6,000 per person.

It's important to budget for additional expenses such as admission fees for attractions, fuel costs, and parking fees, as these can add up quickly.

Overall, the cost of a road trip in the UAE can vary widely depending on your travel style, budget, and preferences. However, with careful planning and budgeting, it is possible to enjoy a memorable and affordable road trip experience in this fascinating country.

How to choose the perfect road trip destination

Before you set off on your road trip, it’s important to do a little bit of planning so that you can make the most of your time.

Finally, make sure you have a good map and plan your route carefully, so you don’t miss any of the best sights along the way!

The Seven-Emirates-In-One-Weekend Road Trip

Updated: May 9, 2020

A couple of weeks ago I was supposed to head off on my long-planned "Seven-Emirates-in-one-Weekend" road trip. It's something I'd been planning for a while, but other commitments (mostly work travel) got in the way. The moral of the story is to do these things when you think of them as you don't know what's going to crop up on the way. But we shouldn't start a story with the moral, and since I didn't do the trip when I could and for the moment I still can't, let's head off on that imaginary journey together now.

Most of my favourite things here in Dubai are not the obvious. You'll never find me in one of our glitzy malls unless I'm feeling particularly benevolent to someone who has asked to be taken there,

or I've had to go to the Samsonite store to fix my suitcase for the umpteenth time. Instead I would start this weekend road trip either by watching the sunrise from the Jumeirah Archaeological Site, a caravanserai dating back to the 9th century right in the heart of one of the city's ritziest neighbourhoods, or with a quick swim in our irresistibly warm waters. Secret Beach is a good option - it's far from being a secret anymore, but the waters are some of the clearest and bluest around. Then a short drive over to Dubai Creek where you can find some of Dubai's best bargains - a 1 dirham ($0.27) cup of hot karak tea and a couple of freshly fried samosas (and, since this is an expedition, ice cream). If you feel like enjoying them from the water, you can spend one more dirham (a steal) to take an abra (a small motorised boat) across to the other side. But we don't have time for that today as we need to press on and get through four more emirates. If we did have more time, we'd also go to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve to visit the Arabian Oryxes, once extinct in the wild, but now happily roaming the dunes here. We'll save this for another weekend.

Instead let's get back in the car and take the 20-minute drive north to Sharjah, rather unfairly famous for being the dry emirate (i.e. alcohol-free) as opposed to being famous for its fantastic museums, including the Al Mahatta Aviation Museum , located on the site of the first airport to be built in the UAE in 1932 as a staging post between the UK and India (Sharjah beat both Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the air race back then), complete with the original control tower. We should also try and squeeze in a quick stop at the Sharjah Art Foundation's Rain Room , but sadly won't have time for the brilliant Mleiha Archaeological Centre set amongst beautiful red dunes, and with evidence of human settlement dating back 130,000 years - around the time that we were venturing out of Africa for the first time. Again, something for another weekend jaunt. If we haven't already overdone the samosas we can try and track down the famous (well, in my books anyway) "Sharjah Sandwich", made of crushed samosas, fries, onion, tomato and chilli all wrapped in bread. Not easy to find for sure, but definitely worth the search.

Then it's back in the car to head a few more kilometres north to little Ajman where we can stop at the Outside Inn, a quirky little bar selling cheap pints of beer and - ssshhhhh - bacon butties, and then on to our fourth emirate of the day, Umm Al Quwain. Another blink-and-you'll-miss emirate, keep an eye out by the side of the road for the mysterious abandoned Ilyushin plane, rumoured to have been used for illegal arms smuggling by the infamous Viktor Bout. It's located next to what is probably Umm Al Quwain's most popular "attraction" - the Barracuda booze shop.

Onwards to Ras Al Khaimah, or RAK, the northernmost emirate that's home to high rocky-mountain hiking terrain where I once did an incredible - and incredibly strenuous - hike. We'll stop at Dhayah Fort which in 1819 was the last bastion of the Al Qasimi clan's resistance against the British who accused them of piracy and "maritime lawlessness". The British came with the big guns, as they usually did, and pummelled the fort with cannons until the Al Qasimis surrendered. It's the highest hilltop fort in the UAE, so we'll climb up to enjoy the views, and maybe even catch a glimpse of our next destination, Fujairah, where we'll spend the night before continuing our long drive south.

Fujairah will be an exciting one for me as the last trip I planned there was curtailed by an unexpected hospital stay. This time we'll snorkel around Snoopy Island, not home to cartoon beagles but said to resemble Snoopy lying on top of his kennel, and hopefully we'll bump into the green turtles that like to hang out here. Then we'll visit the Al Bidya mosque, dating back to the 15th century (and people still insist there's no history in the UAE...), and if we're feeling flush, we can head to the market at Masafi to bargain for souvenirs (but please don't let me pick up yet another ceramic teapot).

And then it'll be time to head to our last emirate of this road trip, Abu Dhabi, home to our nation's capital. I really hope we've left enough time left to see it properly - if we haven't, we'll have plenty more ideas for future weekend road trips. Ideally we'll climb the dunes in the Empty Quarter, rent a bike and ride through the Al Ain oasis (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), drive up to the top of Jebel Hafeet for cool air, a very kitsch little canteen, and views over neighbouring Oman, but realistically we can't squeeze all this into one afternoon. We'll go to the incredibly ornate Qasr Al Watan Presidential Palace where we'll walk around craning our necks with our mouths wide open in awe as we try to take in all the intricate detail, and when our necks ache too much we'll make the short drive to the Louvre Abu Dhabi where we'll admire the architecture just as much as the art.

As our weekend draws to a close there's only one place to finish our Seven Emirates itinerary, and it's at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, where we'll watch the colours of the sky change as the sun sets to form a worthy backdrop for one of the world's most beautiful buildings.

And that's it, seven Emirates successfully visited in one weekend. I can't wait for the day we can actually make it a reality.

If you’re like most travelers to the United Arab Emirates, you’ll never venture beyond the safe embrace of its skyscraper-strewn cities. But that’s not you , right? You’re ready to put the pedal to the metal and discover the wealth of spectacular scenery that lies an easy drive from Dubai — from desert plains and dramatic fjords to lush oases, lofty dunes and more.

On the practical side, you’ll find first-rate roads, cheap fuel and fuss-free car rental. So summon your inner explorer, grab your International Driving Permit — a must-have here — and leave Dubai in the (sand) dust on one of these unforgettable road trips.

UAE road trip map

Desert: From Dubai to Liwa

The most rewarding of road trip s in Dubai is along sand-swept highways to remote Liwa — one of the Arabian Peninsula’s largest oases, on the edge of the Empty Quarter (the world’s largest contiguous sand desert). While Emiratis and expats associate this awe-inspiring part of Arabia with legendary explorer Wilfred Thesiger — the first to cross these colossal dunes on camel and foot — modern-day adventurers will recognize the 650-foot-high dunes from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” filmed here in 2014.

Distance/Duration: 230 miles/3 hours 45 minutes

Tip: Read Thesiger’s “Arabian Sands” (1959) for an appreciation of this inhospitable land.

Fjords: Dubai to Khasab, on the Musandam Peninsula in Oman

OK, so the Musandam Peninsula is not technically in the UAE (it’s an enclave of Oman). Still, this drive from Dubai to Khasab is one of the most jaw-dropping on the Arabian Peninsula. From the UAE-Oman border, the winding road hugs the coast — and each turn reveals yet another tranquil bay where fishermen mend nets and locals cross the beach to buy fresh seafood from the boats.

Distance/Duration: 122 miles/3 hours

Tip: Stay a night in Khasab for a dhow cruise and dolphin spotting — and, if you’re brave, an edge-of-your-seat, four-wheel-drive tour toward the heady peaks of 6,260-foot Jebel Harim mountain.

Bonus tip:  When hiring a car in Dubai, make sure the rental agency allows their vehicles to be driven into the Omani enclave — some companies don’t.

Oasis: Dubai to Al Ain

If you do only one road trip in the UAE, one of the best places to visit near Dubai is laidback Al Ain. Put the car in cruise control on the smooth, straight stretch of blacktop and focus on spotting some camels. (Those “ships of the desert” are tricky to detect against the tan-colored dunes.) Once in Al Ain, known as the Garden City for its lush greenery, you have handsome forts to explore, date-palm oases to discover and, at Hili Archaeological Park , Bronze Age tombs that will blow your mind.

Distance/Duration: 122 miles/90 minutes

Tip: Don’t miss the giddy, winding drive up Jebel Hafeet mountain — 4,098 feet! — for sweeping oasis and desert views.

Mountains: Dubai to the East Coast

The Dubai-to-Hatta section of this route offers some of the most sublime vistas in the country, from camel-dotted plains to russet-colored dunes — including Big Red, a famed rise popular among adrenaline junkies for sandboarding, quad biking and dune bashing (high-speed dune driving). At the high-altitude enclave of Hatta, the parched, purple-hued mountains are best appreciated from the town’s historic watchtowers. The spectacular drive north from Hatta along the east coast offers more scorched peaks skirted by white-sand beaches. (Take the coastal road that winds through Fujairah, Khor Fakkan and Al Badiyah and ends in Dibba.)

Distance/Duration: 203 miles/4 hours.

Tip: En route to Hatta, take a detour from the crossroads town of Al Madam and head to Al Shuwaib (15 miles/20 minutes) to see Arabian oryx (a large antelope) and gazelles frolicking on the dunes.

Sea: Dubai to the North Coast

The route to the seaside village of Ras Al-Khaimah doesn’t offer the scenic drama of other drives, but this trip from Dubai  is more about the destinations than the journey. Call into cities and towns along the way, and you’ll discover old wooden dhows bobbing in the harbor in Sharjah, stunning palm-lined sandy beaches in Ajman, restored wind-tower houses in Umm Al Quwain, atmospheric old souks in Ras Al Khaimah, and, in the arid mountains inland, centuries-old Portuguese forts and watchtowers.

Distance/Duration: 74 miles/90 minutes.

Tip: Take two hours to stroll Sharjah’s historic quarters, and an hour each in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al-Khaimah.

"It’s really nice to have a platform like GAFFL with lots of travelers wanting to do the same as you, a real beautiful cultural exchange. You can meet people so easily and in a trustful way. We were four girls, from French, German and American backgrounds, without knowing each other from before. We spent an amazing week together, 2000km driving, camping on the way. We saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins and pelicans"

Saed

“I have found GAFFL to be an amazing tool for finding similar minded travel partners to embark on an adventure. Through GAFFL, I had organized a trip to Mexico City last month and Quazi joined the trip from Victoria, BC. We spent 14 days of straight exploring, hiking, eating and drinking. Quite an amazing experience - all thanks to GAFFL!”

Scarlett

"I accidentally scrolled across GAFFL and I'm so pleased I did. I met Amaia and immediately decided to road-trip together. We're spending 10 days together and it's great because we have so much in common. Couldn't have done it without GAFFL helping us find one another! It has honestly made NZ so much cheaper to explore as I get to split the costs with someone too"

Before embarking on the road trip, plan your trip wisely for the maximum fun and thrill. Keep reading to know the what and how of traversing this beautiful country.

1. Planning your UAE Road Trip

When is the right time to go on a road trip in the uae.

The ideal time for a road trip in the UAE , particularly for adventure tours Dubai and weekend road trips, is during the cooler months of late October to early March. This period offers a more comfortable climate for outdoor exploration, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. Plan your road trip adventure this season to make the most of your UAE experience. It's a perfect window to enjoy road trip destinations in UAE , as you can partake in various outdoor activities, such as desert safaris, hiking, and exploring cultural sites, without the scorching summer heat.

UAE offers a serene escape with an adventure twist. Ideal for adventurous souls and couples preparing for pre-wedding planning and seeking a unique and picturesque backdrop for their special day, consider embarking on off-road desert safaris, hot air balloon rides, and even paragliding to take your road trip to new heights.

How to plan your UAE Itinerary?

Crafting a weekend trip itinerary through the UAE's significant emirates is like painting a canvas of diverse experiences and cultures. Begin your journey from Dubai, a city that never sleeps, with its glittering skyscrapers and bustling souks. Dive into the world of adventure tours in Dubai , trying activities like sandboarding and dune bashing for a thrilling start. Visiting iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa and the Palm Jumeirah can set the tone for a glamorous weekend.

Next, venture to Abu Dhabi, where the grandeur of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the modern marvels of Yas Island beckon. Explore the cultural Sharjah, known for its museums and traditional markets. In Ras Al Khaimah, nature takes the spotlight with its majestic mountains and pristine beaches , ideal for adventure activities in the UAE . Fujairah, another coastal gem, offers scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities for underwater enthusiasts. Cap off your journey in Umm Al Quwain, a tranquil escape, with a visit to the Dreamland Aqua Park and a dose of leisurely relaxation.

What kind of vehicle is suitable for a road trip in the UAE?

When embarking on a road trip in the UAE , especially for adventure tours Dubai , your choice of vehicle matters. The UAE's well-maintained road network makes various vehicles suitable, but for a comfortable experience, consider an SUV or a sedan. These offer ample space for luggage, essential for extended road trips, and ensure a smooth ride on the diverse terrains. If you're planning a more adventurous off-road journey through the desert, renting a 4x4 with robust features is advisable for navigation. Valuable Tips for the Road Trip

Here are some valuable tips for a road trip in the UAE , especially when considering adventure tours in Dubai , renting a bike in Dubai , or a car in Abu Dhabi :

  • Check Your Documents: Ensure you have all necessary documents, including driver's license, vehicle registration, and insurance. If you plan to rent a car in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, ensure all rental paperwork is in order.
  • Fuel Up: Keep your vehicle's fuel tank up, as some remote areas may have limited gas stations. You want to avoid getting caught off guard, especially during long stretches of road.
  • Weather Awareness: The UAE can get scorching hot. Carry refillable water bottles and avoid outdoor activities during the day's peak heat. If you plan to rent a bike in Dubai, wear appropriate gear to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Safety First: Ensure your vehicle is in excellent condition. Check the tires, brakes, and fluids. Carry an essential toolkit, a first aid kit, and an emergency kit, including a flashlight and water.
  • Plan Ahead: Research your route and road trip to Dubai destinations in advance. Consider the places you want to visit and the experiences you wish to have, whether exploring the city, enjoying adventure tours in Dubai , or soaking up the culture.
  • Cultural Respect: Familiarize yourself with local customs and etiquette. For instance, avoid public displays of affection and dress modestly when visiting cultural sites.
  • Local Cuisine: One of the main things to do on a road trip is to try local Emirati dishes. Explore the culinary scene at local restaurants and street vendors.
  • Emergency Contacts: Save emergency numbers in your phone, such as local police and roadside assistance services.
  • Navigation Tools: Have GPS or a reliable map app on hand. While road signs are generally in English and Arabic, having navigation tools can be a real asset.
  • Cash and Cards: One of the essential things to bring on a road trip is a mix of cash and credit/debit cards, as not all places may accept card payments, especially in more remote areas.
  • Respect the Speed Limit: Be aware of the speed limits and strictly adhere to them. The UAE has strict traffic regulations, and fines for violations can be hefty.
  • Accommodation Booking: If you plan a multi-day road trip, book your accommodations in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.

By following these tips, you can ensure a comfortable, enjoyable, and memorable adventure trip in the UAE , whether indulging in adventure tours in Dubai , renting a bike in Dubai , or opting for a car rental in Abu Dhabi .

Hi everyone, in September I'll leave for a journey around the globe, and the first step is going to be 4 days in UAE.

Highlights of this road-trip would be Al-Ain , Liwa Desert and Jazira Al Hamra.

I'm struggling to find any tour-operator offering something like this, and it sounds like I'll have to rent a car in Dubai on my arrival on 13 Sep.

Do you have any suggestions about a tour-operator offering some like this?

In case you have not, do you have any suggestion about the stages of this trip, roads to do, thrilling hotels and some other desert-highlights?
