How to choose the perfect road trip destination

Before you set off on your road trip, it’s important to do a little bit of planning so that you can make the most of your time.

Think about what kind of scenery you want to see. If you’re looking for some desert landscapes and rolling sand dunes, then a trip to Liwa Oasis is perfect. Or if you’re after some stunning mountain scenery, head to the Hajar Mountains.

You’ll also need to consider how much time you have and how far you want to travel. If you only have a few days, it’s best to stick to shorter trips within easy reach of Dubai. But if you’ve got a week or two to spare, there’s plenty of scope for longer road trips.

Finally, make sure you have a good map and plan your route carefully, so you don’t miss any of the best sights along the way!

What to expect on a road trip in Dubai

Before you set off on your road trip, it’s important to know what to expect. Here are a few things you need to know:

The UAE is a very safe country and violent crime is rare. However, as with any destination, it’s always important to take precautions and be aware of your surroundings.

Driving in the UAE can be quite challenging, especially in the cities. Be prepared for busy roads, impatient drivers, and lots of beeping.

The weather in the UAE can be extreme, so make sure you pack sunscreen and plenty of water. You won’t likely have to drive in bad weather, however, as it only rains a few days out of the year (and they do cloud seeding to make this happen!).

10 Things To Do in Dubai on a Girls Trip to Dubai!

Categories Middle East , UAE

My best friend moved to Dubai to work for Emirates Airline so I decided to visit her and spend 1 week in Dubai. It was hard fitting all of the Dubai attractions and all of the things to do in Dubai into 1 week but we managed most of it.

I had a great time in Dubai and although Dubai is popular for families and honeymooners, a girls trip to Dubai is also a great idea! This is what we got up to in 1 week in Dubai and places I’d recommend you visit too!

Things To Do On A Girls Trip To Dubai!

1. Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa is by far Dubai’s most iconic building, it took 5 years to build and opened in just 2010 and with it being the world’s largest building and visible from most places in the city I can see why.

We didn’t go to the top, my friend had been there up there a few times already and I wanted to save some money as I was travelling Dubai on a budget, but I loved seeing it from ground level.

Every night from 6:00 pm at 30minute intervals there is a fountain show outside which can be accessed via the Dubai Mall and is indeed the largest musical fountain show so don’t miss out on seeing this either as it was pretty impressive!

2. Dubai Mall

Right next to the Burj Khalifa is Dubai Mall and this being Dubai means it’s no ordinary mall.. oh no, this Mall has a waterfall in it,  high street shops, high-end designer shops and so many food outlets. There’s even an Angelina cafe with outside seating so you can eat your macaroons and pretend you’re in Paris while in the Dubai Mall!

The Dubai Mall is just an example of how crazy Dubai is. In fact, Dubai is so crazy and well known that a lot of people question which Country is Dubai in?

3. Dubai Marina

The Marina is where you’ll get the iconic skyscraper shot from. This is truly an area that you just want to move to and live in! In fact, a few years later my friend did move near here! The huge buildings gleam in the sun, there’s crazy huge yachts and some very fancy restaurants.

The Marina was lovely to see during the day and a few days later we went for dinner at Asia Asia before going out for ladies night in Dubai and it was even better sitting 6 floors up and seeing it in the dark when we were all dressed up!

4. Barasti Beach Bar

Dubai’s coastline holds many beaches but some are private beaches for the hotel behind them and others although free to the public are part of a bar of some sorts.

My friend took me to Barasti Beach Bar which is a really awesome place. During the day there’s huge beds and sun loungers you can lie on (but get there early to ensure you get one!), there’s a bar, they serve great food and there’s music pumping and this carries on into the night.

Some people were dressed pretty casual like they were going to the beach and other’s like they were on a night out but either way it’s a good place (and a free place) to go, the water was bath temperature and a lovely colour and while the heat defeated us within an hour or so I was glad I got to see a beach and have a very yummy Halloumi salad there.

5. Brunch in Dubai

When my friend moved to Dubai she kept talking about going to ‘Brunch’ and I couldn’t work out what this was! For most of us, it’s a mid-morning meal yet she was always dressed up and drinking in her photos.

After further questioning, I found out what it was and booked my flight around being in Dubai for ‘Brunch’ because it’s a big deal and one of the best things to do on a girls trip!

Basically every Friday many of the hotels in Dubai offer ‘Brunch’, it tends to start around noon, you pay an entrance fee which will depend upon where you are and then you get unlimited drinks and indeed get a buffet of food. In the UAE the weekend’s are Friday & Saturday so it’s basically a good excuse to have a day drinking session.

We went to Double Decker’s Brunch as it’s one of the cheapest and full of British ex-pats (with the buffet being a Sunday Roast!) but definitely check out what’s on offer near you, I heard the one in the Atlantis is pretty awesome!

6. Atlantis Hotel & the Palm

While on the topic of the Atlantis hotel, this was another building I really wanted to see as I would say for me its the second most iconic building in Dubai and I also wanted to go onto one of the man-made Palms (although once on there it doesn’t feel much different!).

It’s take’s awhile to get to especially via Public transport as we had to get the Metro to the Marina, swap onto the Tram for a few stops and then take the Monorail through the Palm (note that you can’t get on this with your normal metro ticket, it costs an extra 25 AED/ £4.50 for a return trip), where you get a great view of the hotel just before you reach the hotel’s station.

The Atlantis hotel is right at the top of the Palm and was only opened in 2008. We had a little walk around the hotel but the main reason for us visiting was so we could be big kids and go to the Waterpark- Aquaventure.

We did consider not going as it’s pretty pricey at 315 AED/ £57.00 (although if you prebook online you can get it cheaper- which I just found out now researching the price!!), but we did get it a bit cheaper because of my friends UAE resident card and I’m so glad we went! We got a double tube and were on the rides for a good 3-4 hours, there are lots of slides which mainly you have to be in a tube for and then there’s a lazy river which connects some of the rides and has rapids and we were just like kids screaming and rushing from one ride to another and it was so much fun being there with a friend!

If you are in Dubai with Kid’s , this is a great thing to do!

7. Ladies Night in Dubai

If you’re looking for the best night out in Dubai on a girls trip then definitely plan to be in Dubai on a Tuesday night for Ladies Night! We got all dressed up and went to a restaurant- Asia Asia in the Marina where we were automatically given 3 tokens for 3 free drinks there (we did have some dinner too but I think we still would have got them even if we didn’t eat), and then we got a taxi to a bar called ‘360’ in Dubai which sits just across from the Burj Al Arab, the third iconic building I wanted to see!

360 was a brilliant bar, it’s all outdoors, has some awesome music and we got tokens for 4 free drinks on arrival!

So basically on Ladies night you just have to pay for taxi’s and that’s it.. perfect! And perfect for a girls trip to Dubai!

8. Desert Safari

A popular trip to get away from the city is to do an evening Desert Safari. We booked the trip online and paid 185 AED/ £33.00 which I thought was really reasonable.

We got picked up at our accommodation at 3:00 pm, the drive there was a good hour or so and then we were in for some stomach-dropping, dune bashing (make sure you don’t eat before leaving!). There were lots of screams but I felt totally safe and it lasted just long enough and we then got out for a photo opportunity.

The itinerary say’s that you’ll be able to watch the sunset but unfortunately, it set while we were driving to our next spot however on arrival the sky was a lovely colour. Here and included in the package were camels to ride (although you only get about 5 minutes on them walking in a circle with them having to sit up and down so it’s not very nice for them or you), henna which you could have painted on your hand or foot, shisha to smoke and even the opportunity to try on traditional Burqa.

Following this is a 2 course dinner which was surprisingly suitable for vegetarians and a pretty impressive dance to watch between both courses. After the belly dancing, we were back in the jeeps and were home by 9:00-9:30 pm.

This is something I would highly recommend doing when in Dubai with friends. Of course, it’s not particularly traditional and has been changed to meet Western standards but it was a great evening out.

9 Visit Dubai Old Town

Dubai isn’t all huge, fancy skyscrapers, located in the North in Bur Dubai and Deira separated by the creek is Old Dubai.

We only spent a hour or so here but it was all we needed to get a feel for the area. There are lots of souks including a Spice Souk and a Gold Souk. You do get hassled quite a bit but if you want to do some cheap market shopping this is the place!

There’s also the Dubai Museum which we didn’t go in but sounds quite interesting

We took a boat from one side to the other which was a good way to see the creek and get a feel of what it used to be like.. plus it cost 1 AED/ 0.18p so we couldn’t go wrong!

10. Sheikh Zayed Mosque

Lastly and although not technically in Dubai but in the neighbour city of Abu Dhabi is the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, which is well worth the journey to visit. It’s safe to say its the Grandest Grand Mosque I have ever seen, its free to get in with a free tour and you will leave feeling amazed at the beauty of it!

It’s a great place to get amazing photos of you and your girls!

Top tips for female travellers visiting Dubai

Dec 7, 2018 • 7 min read

ladies trip from dubai

October 4 2017: Three Surfers go into the waters during sunset with the Burj Al Arab hotel in the background.

Many travellers imagine that visiting Dubai as a woman is much more difficult, complicated and stressful than it actually is. Dubai ranks high on the list of the world’s safest cities, despite its location in a region that often makes headlines for being in seemingly eternal conflict. However, with the city’s reputation as a blinged-up Disneyland crossed with its Islamic-rooted governance, what is and isn’t allowed isn’t always clear.

While female visitors certainly aren’t expected to don burkinis at the beach, brushing up on local customs and norms before your trip will help you avoid awkward or potentially risky situations, and it will let you in on a few female-centric perks too.

What should I wear in Dubai?

Dubai ’s quest to be the biggest and brightest might appear to indicate otherwise, but this city still has strong traditional roots. Emiratis – both men and women – dress in loose-fitting robes, and you’ll see many local women opting to cover their hair or faces with a scarf. Visitors don’t have to do the same, but covering your thighs and shoulders is recommended, so pack long skirts or baggy trousers. To visit a local mosque, women do need to wear a headscarf, but these are usually provided if you forgot to bring one. A colourful pashmina or scarf draped around the head and hair will do the trick.

Dubai’s bars and clubs are a different matter, and you can wear whatever you would to go out back home. However, be aware that many nightlife spots are located in hotels or shopping centres, so bring a cover-up to avoid awkward situations when moving from bar to bar. For example, if you decide to bare midriff, thighs or shoulders and arms, bring a scarf or another cover-up to don when moving on to your next watering hole.

It’s fine to wear your bikini on the beach or at the pool, but don’t wear it out and about. Not only will you be freezing (thanks to Arctic-like air conditioning in most malls and public spaces), but you’ll also offend locals, though they’ll most likely be too polite to say anything.

What should I wear if I’m visiting during Ramadan?

During Ramadan, you can still wear a bikini when sunbathing at the hotel pool or beach, but make sure you’re covered up as you walk through the hotel itself. When you’re out in the city, put on a below-the-knee skirt or loose-fitting trousers and a top that covers your upper arms and isn’t low cut.

Will I be harassed?

Women visiting Dubai can feel at ease sightseeing, taking taxis and dining out alone, even late in the evening, and the World Economic Forum ranks the United Arab Emirates as the world’s second safest country. That’s not to say that you won’t get any unexpected attention, but unfortunately, we’ve yet to come across many cities in the world that are entirely wolf-whistle free. If you are approached with a chat-up line, it’s not a problem to completely ignore it or politely but firmly decline it.

Can I drink alcohol in Dubai?

This is a grey area. At the airport, Dubai Duty Free sells oodles of alcohol to anyone over the age of 21, bars and clubs in the city’s hotels offer tempting happy hours, and free-flow boozy Friday brunches are legendary. Despite all of that, drinking alcohol in Dubai is technically illegal unless you have a licence, but there’s no way for temporary visitors to obtain one. Dubai police don’t track down beer-drinking tourists unless they’re causing a disturbance. Recently, there have been more calls for clarification on ‘the law that forgot about tourists’, but so far there’s been no resolution, and the current law is still the baseline.

What are ladies’ nights?

One of the big perks of being a female traveller in Dubai is the endless array of ladies’ nights. Once limited to women getting a free drink or two on a Tuesday evening – a clever marketing ploy in the days when the drinking crowd in Dubai was very male-heavy – ladies’ nights have become a Dubai institution and happen every night of the week at venues around town. From free or reduced access at beach clubs to free cocktails at bars and half-price dinners in some of the city’s best restaurants, tracking down ladies’ nights takes the punch out of what can otherwise be an expensive evening out.

Can I stay in a hotel room with my partner if we aren’t married?

Though thousands of unmarried couples cohabit without any issues in Dubai – presumably sharing beds as well as addresses – sex outside marriage is illegal and is punishable by jail and possibly deportation. This law seems to fall into the ‘if no one is bothered by it, then it’s OK’ category. However, should a complaint be made about you cohabiting with a member of the opposite sex – whether you book into a hotel room with your travel partner or want to bring someone home from a nightclub – then you could be in trouble. Hotels request passport details from guests checking in, but this is for security reasons rather than an attempt to find people having premarital sex.

When it comes to contraception, you’ll find condoms for sale in supermarkets, pharmacies and petrol stations, but the morning-after pill is illegal. Doctors in the UAE are required by law to report pregnancies in unmarried women. If you think you might be pregnant, consider waiting until you’re back home to consult a professional.

Who should I contact in an emergency?

The Dubai Police are extremely responsive and can help you with a whole manner of things from theft to road accidents. Dial 999 for emergencies and 911 for non-emergency situations. However, in cases that involve sex or alcohol, it’s better to contact your embassy, which might be able to advise further.  If you are raped, reconsider reporting it to the authorities. While action against the perpetrators would be taken, you could find yourself charged with sex outside of marriage and face prosecution yourself. Instead, get in touch with your embassy, which can help you without involving local authorities.

How can I meet locals in Dubai?

What better way to find out more about life in a city that’s grown from a tiny fishing village to a mega-metropolis in less than half a century than by speaking to the locals? The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding hosts weekly sessions where you can find out more about local culture and traditions with Emiratis of both sexes, including a no-holds-barred Q&A session where you can ask anything you’d like. Meet the Locals offers meetups where you can have lunch with people from all over the Emirates. Another option is ExpatWoman , a long-running group that has local members, a hugely informative database and an interactive forum. Tinder exists, and it’s incredibly popular. Various other dating apps are available for download too.

What do LGBT+ travellers need to know before visiting Dubai?

LGBT+ rights in Dubai are heavily suppressed. Public displays of affection, while frowned upon for straight couples, are a strict no-no for gay couples. You’ll see some local men holding hands, as well as nose rubbing between the sexes, but this is all platonic. Cross-dressing in public is illegal, and transgender travellers could face issues when filing official documentation.  Gay travellers sharing a hotel room are unlikely to face any issues, unless you’re staying in some of the smaller locally run hotels in the older parts of the city. Instead, book into a higher-end, international-branded hotel. There’s no gay scene in Dubai per se, but The Play Room at The Oberoi, Barberry at Tryp by Wyndham and Zinc at the Crowne Plaza might be worth a visit.

72 hours in Dubai with the girls: what to see, do and where to eat

Thrill seeker or sun worshipper board a flight..

dubai

One look on social media and you'll see at least one celebrity or influencer visiting Dubai , but just three days in the city and I can understand why.

MORE:  What you need to pack for a holiday: 90 must-have items

Not only is it the perfect combination of beach and city break (you can literally see the skyline from your pool lounger), but it's also jam-packed full of attractions to entertain the thrill-seekers, the weekend brunchers and the sun worshippers. FYI, I'm all of the above.

WATCH: Royal family's clever travel secrets revealed

I'll admit, Dubai wasn't high on my list of summer holiday destinations, but October to April months offer a much more balmy temperature range of 20-35°C. And with plenty of air-conditioned hotels, refreshing swimming pools and even a giant mall, you won't find it hard to entertain yourself away from the heat.

So if you're looking to live out your celebrity travel dreams – think Michelle Keegan and Khloe Kardashian-approved destinations – here's why you should jet to Dubai for a girls' weekend …

Where to stay in Dubai

Inside the lobby-turned-library at 25 Hours Hotel in Dubai

Dubai is known for its luxurious hotel options, but if you're looking for something a little more unique than the cookie-cutter skyscraper with fantastic views, then  25hrs Hotel is a must-try. With the motto: 'Come as you are' and a flashing neon sign at reception reading: 'We are all nomads here', you can expect quirky yet welcoming design elements that make you feel right at home.

For starters, the 26-metre mural on the ceiling tells the story of the hotel with everything from constellations to Dubai landmarks, while the entranceway-come-library is the perfect spot for a light read while waiting for a friend in a giant bucket chair. Onto the 434 rooms and suites, which cost from £170 per night and feature everything from hammocks to cosy swinging seats, rainfall showers and even bicycles, depending on the type of room you're after.

Disclaimer: If you're sharing a Bedouin room with a friend, you'll want to make use of the curtain that wraps around the shower, positioned in the centre of the space!

Get VHS and typewriters delivered to your room for a blast from the past, unwind at the Extra Hours Spa – complete with Dubai's first outdoor mixed-gender sauna – or sip cocktails around the rooftop pool overlooking the Museum of the Future. The latter is particularly quiet early in the mornings if you want the entire 6th-floor pool area to yourself.

Restaurants to visit in Dubai

ce la vi

Brunch treats at Ce La Vi

We spent a lot of time eating inside 25hours but before you judge us, it's worth noting the wide range of dishes just steps from your hotel room. Monkey Bar is ideal if you want a taste of Latin American dishes like deep fried plantain, prawn skewers and pulled pibil chicken tacos, while Ernst Biergarten & Wirtshaus is worth a visit, even if it's just to join other diners who travel from all over the city to enjoy traditional German cuisine in their incredible Lederhosen and Dirndl!

Away from the hotel, BB Social Dining's Business Lunch offers mouth-watering Modern Eastern Cuisine, and it's certainly not just for business professionals. Head to the DIFC on a weekday from 12 to 4pm to grab a two or three-course meal that won't break the bank – I recommend the cauliflower popcorn and the chicken bang bang baos, finished off with a bite-sized mango or coconut ice cream lollipop.

And you can't visit the city without trying out one of their famous brunches. Shove aside your assumptions of smashed avo on toast with coffee – Dubai does brunch in a much more glamorous way, with DJs, cocktails and incredible views across the city if you head to  Ce La Vi .

Situated on the 54th floor is an Instagrammable swing set against the backdrop of the skyline, while plush seats inside offer the perfect spot to indulge in burrata salad, truffle risotto and chocolate lava cake. But be warned, eat too much and you won't be able to get up and dance to the live performers!

Things to do in Dubai with friends

While eating is one of the best ways to get to know a new destination, you don't want to miss out on exploring the city, too. For that reason, we didn't spend the full four hours at either of our lunch spots.

hero odysea

The Hero Odysea Signature Boat Tour shows off stunning landmarks from the water

Instead, we spent our first morning seeing all the best sights via speed boat, which wasn't as terrifying as it may sound to those who don't love the sea. Personally, I couldn't wait to climb into the two-person boat and drive at speed over the waves, but the tour guides at Hero Odysea made sure everyone was comfortable on the   Signature Boat Tour , stopping regularly to allow us to swap drivers and get pictures in front of landmarks.

As a camera-shy person, I'm not a huge one for selfies at the best of times, but our instructor had every one of us posing on the front of the boat or behind the wheel against the backdrop of the likes of the Burj Al Arab and the Ain Dubai, to name a few.

Top tip: tie your hair up, because I found out the hard way that excitement combined with 35-degree humidity and high-speed wind is a recipe for a bad hair day – not ideal for aforementioned pictures, especially if you're not blessed with natural beach waves.

drift beach club

Unwind round the infinity pool at Drift Beach Club

Unwind from the adrenaline-fuelled morning by hiring a lounger at the  Drift Beach Club , where you can work on your tan, cool down in the infinity pool and admire one kilometre of beachfront with panoramic views of Palm Island Bay and Dubai's skyline. For foodies, there is also a restaurant where you can't go wrong with the caramelised onion pissaladière, tomato risotto and dulce de leche and banana French toast.

One of the highlights was undoubtedly a trip to the desert to watch the sunset at  Sonara Camp , which offers swingsets, soft archery, sandboarding and even camel rides for those who feel so inclined. Otherwise, sip on drinks underneath teepees as the sky turns orange, before finishing off the evening with a Mediterannean menu under a canopy of fairy lights made only more special by the fire performers.

For one more burst of adrenaline, head to   Sky Views Observatory for the chance to try the famous glass slide experience that takes you from the 53rd to 52nd floor – a much cooler version of your favourite childhood hobby. Next, test your nerves with the Edge Walk, which will see you get kitted up in a boiler suit and a harness before walking around the outside of the building for uninterrupted views of the Dubai Mall and Fountains, the Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai.

Not satisfied with just walking? Get some incredible photos of yourself hanging and swinging off the edge.

Finally, it's not a girls' trip without at least a whistlestop visit to the Dubai Mall on your way to the airport. Where else can you expect to see over 33,000 animals in the aquarium, test out your ice skating skills, and see the world’s largest indoor virtual reality park, all under one roof?

How to travel to Dubai

A flight from London to Dubai takes around seven hours, so we chose to spend three full days exploring the city and two travel days on either side.

Emirates economy flights from Heathrow Airport cost from £559 per person, including two meals, seats with plenty of legroom (I even had a row to myself!) and a plethora of new movies on board.

And if you're not up to walking the distance to and from the gate in Dubai Airport – we all know it can seem like miles when you're tired – buggies are available to carry you, your friends and your luggage for a stress-free start and end to your holiday. Happy travels!

Solo Travel To Dubai

ladies trip from dubai

Travelling solo in Dubai is easy and this glitzy city is great for a holiday. That's why I've given it 5 out of 5 stars. Is Dubai safe for solo female travellers? Yes, Dubai is a cosmopolitan country with many nationalities and it's changed so much in the last few years.

Generally, anything goes within the hotels where you can drink alcohol and party until dawn. You don't even need to cover up here anymore as women wear everything and anything. You'll find little black dresses for brunch as well as women covered up too. Dubai has a fantastic tourism infrastructure with a cheap metro system, affordable taxis and plenty of tours that you can join solo.

You won't feel awkward being alone here and especially not dining alone. You can also attend events solo and won't feel out of place. I use Platinumlist where you can attend the Dubai Opera, a dance event or a concert at the Coca Cola Arena. I love Dubai for solos so much that I just moved here alone!

Solo travel in Dubai

Dubai at night. View of the Burj Khalifa from C'est La Vie

Travel to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and you'll discover gorgeous beaches, futuristic skyscrapers and year-round sunshine. Since the discovery of oil here in the 1960’s, Dubai has barely stopped building. Anything the rest of the world can do, Dubai tries to do it better.

From the world’s tallest building to man-made islands shaped like the world, this millionaire's playground has everything and is scattered with pyramids, giant aquariums, a palm island, and the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East (Ski Dubai is found in the Mall of Emirates). It literally has all the tourist places you could ever need.

A ticket to this destination does not come without a price tag. This Emirate is unique and brimming with first-class hotels but there is accommodation to be found for those on a more modest budget. Discover my recommended places to go alone in Dubai below.

TIP – If you are planning things to do alone in Dubai, consider purchasing a Dubai Explorer Pass. Save up to 47% at 3, 4, 5 or 7 top attractions including the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus. * Buy the Dubai Explorer Pass here

The Palm Island

Places To Go in Dubai

This Emirate state oozes opulence, (even the airport has sparkling diamond columns). One of the top things to do in Dubai is shop. The shopping is amazing and you could spend a week just browsing the high street and designer stores. Many malls offer free shuttles to the larger hotels, or you can use the hop on hop off bus but you have to book a day ticket first.

Dubai is mainly known for its gold, and gold souks can be found in the malls or the Deira district . From Dubai Festival Mall to Mall of the Emirates, or Ibn Battuta Mall (the largest themed mall in Dubai), discover the best place to shop in Dubai . It's not just fashion shops that you'll find in the malls. Inside Dubai mall is the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, one of the world's largest suspended aquariums with sharks and rays. It's a Dubai must see.

One of the relaxing things to do in Dubai on your own is to spend time on the beach. No trip here is complete without a dip in the warm waters of the sea. Most hotels have their own section of private beach which you can pay to enter. Laze at the public beach of Jumeriah Dubai where you can dine in one of the many restaurants along The Walk at JBR.

Solo travel in Dubai

Spend a day at the public beach at JBR

The Dubai Burj Khalifa in Downtown Dubai is one of the best places to visit in Dubai. The Khalifa is the world’s tallest building and one of Dubai’s most iconic sights. Needless to say that you can get an amazing view of the city from the observation deck which stands at 555 metres (a must see in Dubai). * Check prices, dates and availability

If you’re looking for a classy venue to enjoy a cocktail, you can’t get better than the  Sky Bar  at the world’s most famous 7 star hotel – the  Burj Al Arab . Designed as a sail, this unique hotel has a stunning lobby full of reds, golds and royal blues that will make you feel like a princess. Cocktails are expensive and there is a minimum spend but it is definitely worth the visit (and you get free dates thrown in!) Because of its exclusivity we recommend taking company with you.

Just along from the Burj is the  Souk Madinat Jumeriah: Dubai’s own little Venice, where you can take a boat ride through the Dubai water canal and narrow waterways to the Arabian Market. A unique way to get here from the hotel is via beach buggy cruising along the sandy beach.

Dubai Marina has great restaurants and bars and is vibrant at night. During the day you can go jet-skiing here or just admire the yachts before a spot of window shopping at the Dubai marina mall.

Visit Al Seef

If all the modernity gets too much then take a trip back in time with a visit to the old part of the city. The museum is a refreshing escape from the modern skyscrapers on Sheikh Zayed Road and teaches you about the first Persian settlers and Dubai's pearl diving history. Or visit the Al Fahidi historical district, one of the Emirate’s oldest areas that provides a glimpse of life back in Dubai before the ninety seventies, with traditional buildings and a labyrinth of lanes to lose yourself in.

One of the must do things in Dubai, along the Dubai Creek is to join a dhow cruise at night. Although it can be a bit touristy with a belly dancing show put on for the passengers, you get to see a different side of Dubai as you sail past the old area and away from the skyscrapers and city life. One tip is to buy the premium hop-on, hop-off bus ticket where get an Arabian dhow cruise included so there’s no need to buy a specific tour.

dubia-and-abu-dhabi-2011-142-1

The Emiratis love their camel racing and the  Nad Al Sheba Camel Track can be found just outside the city but as betting is forbidden, it’s all about the taking part. If you want to try it for yourself, the local camel farm is the place to visit in Dubai to have your own camel ride on these galloping animals.

When you want to escape the city, the Dubai desert is only a stone’s throw away. Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is a protected nature reserve covering an area of 225 sq kms. See mammals, reptiles and more than 100 birds within its location.

One of the best things to do in Dubai if you love adventure is to take an exhilarating 4WD drive Dubai desert safari,   racing up and down the sandy red dunes. Excursions in Dubai also include driving a quad bike for some dune bashing too.

If you're a cultural Girl about the Globe, one of the cultural things to do in Dubai is visit a Bedouin village for a glimpse of traditional nomadic life. Visit between November and May and you’ll see Dubai Miracle Garden in full bloom. From a floral clock to a floral castle, experience famous buildings made up of flowers in this 72,000 sqm park.

If you want to indulge your inner child and explore Dubai from a childlike perspective, visit the Dinosaur Park, the largest dinosaur park in the world. Or if dinosaurs aren’t really your thing, Dubai Garden Glow (on the same tour Dubai ticket) is a theme park with illuminated colourful displays, laser light shows and even a Burj Khalifa replica made from recycled items.

Or delve into Bollywood blockbusters at Bollywood Parks Dubai, one of the Dubai Parks and Resorts, where you can can transport yourself to India, and enjoy rides and vibrant performances from Mumbai.

Other places to see in Dubai are:   Wild Wadi Waterpark , one of the top tourist attractions for those seeking adventure, IMG Worlds of Adventure, the world's largest indoor theme park: and the impressive Jumeriah Mosque  and  Sheik Sied Palace.

With plans in the pipeline for a Universal style theme park and the world’s biggest shopping mall, who knows what tourist attractions in Dubai is coming next.

* Visit Dubai during October to April for camel racing.

* Although the sea looks calm be careful of the strong currents.

Dubai isn't a destination for overland adventure tour groups such as G Adventures or Intrepid but there are plenty of activities in Dubai and Dubai excursions that you can do here. Here are my recommended companies for tours in Dubai:

Big Bus Tours – These hop-on, hop-off Dubai sightseeing tours are an easy way to get around Dubai. It includes a guided sightseeing boat cruise on a traditional dhow, and free entry into the Atlantis Aquarium (which is amazing!) They also offer a night tour which is perfect for those wanting to explore the city safely at night.

Dubai Private Tour – This company has 16 years experience and can arrange private touring in Dubai such as a city tour, desert safari or even a dinner cruise for your stay. Their Dubai tour packages also include a desert bbq dinner and belly dance performance, as well excursions from Dubai such as a full day Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai.

Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide helps you to find top-rated Dubai activities and Dubai attractions. Choose from Burj Khalifa tickets, a camel safari or a Dubai city tour visiting the Dubai Museum, a trip to Dubai Creek or a dhow dinner cruise. There are several to choose from including a Dubai half-day city tour, and it’s really simple to use. Just check the reviews for your day sightseeing tour and price. Then check availability then book online. * Check rates and availability for all Dubai day tours

Known for its luxurious Dubai hotels such as the Burj Al Arab – classed as a 6 star hotel in Dubai, you may think that accommodation here will cost a small fortune but you can find reasonable accommodation if you are on a budget. There are many hostels within the city offering both mixed and female-only dorms for those wanting to spend their money on experiences instead and wanting to meet others.

This Emirate is known for its 5-star hotels and Dubai has so many hotels to choose from. From 3-stars within the Deira district to the luxurious 5-star hotels in Dubai along Jumeriah Beach, the Palm or Dubai Marina. If you prefer self-catering options, y ou’ll also find apartments and aparthotels that generally have a gym and a swimming pool.

If you are searching for the best accommodation in Dubai for solo travellers, I've personally stayed in 15 different accommodations in the city from co-living villas to gorgeous hotels. I've listed all my recommendations plus the best areas to stay in Dubai to help you decide where to stay. * Check rates and availability for all accommodation in Dubai

ladies trip from dubai

Travelling in Dubai is easy with good public transportation. Buses run frequently from the airport to Deira bus station. The hop on hop off bus takes you to the old town and back to the new city and is a good way of getting your bearings.

Some hotels offer free Dubai transportation to the shopping district but there is also an extensive bus network. To see some of the tourist sights, Line 8 is a good route to take, or you can take the Dubai Tram that runs to Jumeirah Beach. The other bus lines may not be as frequent.

The Dubai metro is also easy to use. Most stations are above ground so it’s also a good way of seeing the city. The red line takes you to Deira City Centre. Dubai transportation costs from AED4 and tickets must be the Nol card which are also used on the tram and bus.

Most people take taxis here and you can hail a metered Dubai taxi anywhere. There is also Uber in Dubai, a popular taxi app where you request your journey through your mobile phone and pay through the app. If you visit Palm Jumeirah Dubai, take the Palm monorail. Plan for your journey around Dubai using the Wojhati travel planner app.

* To hire a car we recommend pre-booking car hire with Avis  so you can collect your car when you arrive at the airport.

Itinerary For Dubai

Dubai can be visited on a long weekend city break but as the flying time is 6 hours from the UK, it’s definitely worth staying at least 4 to 5 days in Dubai. If you are unsure what to do alone in Dubai, whether you can only do Dubai in a day, or Dubai in 5 days, below are recommendations for things to do in Dubai for 5 days. To create your best Dubai itinerary 3 days or for 4, just customise the days that you prefer for your Dubai trip itinerary.

Day One – Start the morning shopping in one of Dubai’s giant malls. Explore the aquarium or even go skiing inside one at Ski Dubai! (one of the Dubai top attractions). Then head to the Burj Khalifa when you are all shopped out. Stroll around the grounds of the Burj Park then watch the Dubai Fountain show , another of the tourist attractions in Dubai which puts on a display in the evening. It's also one of the places to visit in Dubai for free.

Day Two – Take a hop on hop us bus city tour and see the city to get your bearings then climb aboard a dhow for a river cruise along the creek, stopping at the old souks for nose-tingling scents and the Pearl Museum. Then relax in the afternoon on the beach. If your accommodation doesn’t have a beach, relax at Jumeriah Beach (the public beach).

Day Three – Continue the sightseeing in Dubai and discover Dubai’s Little Venice. Take a boat ride then spend some time at the Arabian Market before taking a buggy to the Burj Al Arab for a drink and some dates (of the cuisine kind) at the Sky Bar.

Day Four – Venture to Dubai’s man-made palm island. You can easily spend a day here at the Atlantis Palm, a gorgeous 5 star hotel with shops and first-class restaurants. Explore the Aquaventure Waterpark and take the ‘Leap of Faith,’ a 9-story tall mega-slide on a Mayan Temple.

If you prefer to stay dry, wander around the Lost Chambers Aquarium (where you can also snorkel inside) and the Atlantis Room displaying artefacts from the fantasy world of Atlantis before having a drink at Nasimi Beach. * Check prices, dates and availability

Day Five – Explore the desert landscape and take a 4WD desert safari through the sand dunes. Visit a Bedouin village to see their traditional nomadic life. In the afternoon visit the Sheik Sied Palace and Jumeriah Mosque. * Check prices, dates and availability

The Emirate is perfect for a stopover on a multi-centre trip to Thailand , Malaysia or Bali and can also be twinned with the Maldives or Seychelles.

If you need a guide book for your travels we recommend Rough Guides. Covering where to go and when to go, things not to miss, itineraries, getting around, festivals and events, history, and maps, they are amongst the most comprehensive guides on the market.

Dubai is a year-round destination thanks to its desert location but the weather can change in the winter months. In December and January as well as warm days expect some clouds, wind and even a few days of rain. But it is still Dubai so you can sunbathe during the day and just wear a jacket for the cooler nights.

The summer months in Dubai can be extremely hot. In July and August, temperatures can reach more than 40 degrees Celsius making it too hot to sightsee. For any Dubai trips, avoid 12 pm until 3 pm when the days are at their hottest and choose to browse air-conditioned souks and shopping malls instead.

Spending the days inside and the evenings outside is the best way to survive the hot months and the hottest times of the day before getting back on the beach or a swimming pool in the late afternoon. The heat can cause fog over the city too so make the most of a clear day for any trips to the Burj Khalifa.

When travelling to Dubai alone, the best time is between October to March. Or visit between mid-December and January for the annual Dubai shopping festival. This chart shows the average maximum day temperatures for Dubai from January to December to help you plan the best time to go to Dubai.

Best Time to go to Dubai

If you are visiting Dubai as a solo female traveller, travel insurance is always recommended especially if you are planning on adventure tours to the desert.

True Traveller and World Nomads are two insurance companies which can cover travel to Dubai. True Traveller is available to UK and European residents, and World Nomads is available to over 100 countries worldwide, including the USA and UK. For digital nomads, Safety Wing is a nomad insurance that covers people from all over the world.

While the thrill of exploring Dubai can be high on your list, it's equally important to consider your health and well-being during your travels, especially in a foreign city. Knowing about the top hospitals in Dubai can give you peace of mind, ensuring you're well-prepared for any unexpected health issues.

All companies allow you to buy insurance when you are already on the road and offer different plans depending on your needs including additional adventure cover and additional baggage cover.

* Check insurance cover and prices for True Traveller

N.b. World Nomads provides travel insurance for travellers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance.

Dubai’s main airport is the Dubai International Airport which is one of the world’s busiest international airports. The airport is known to work as a hub for all major airlines and is the hub for Emirates Airlines.

A taxi is the quickest way from the airport into the city and costs approximately £20 for the 30 minute journey. Taxis are available 24 hours from the terminal. The metro is the cheapest way and costs £2. From Terminal 3 it departs every 10 minutes and takes 42 minutes. Find schedules here .

Line 10 Skybus costs £3 and takes nearly 1.5 hours. Bus stations are opposite both terminals and leave every 10 minutes between 6am and 10pm.

* If you are traveling to Dubai alone, feel more confident with someone waiting for you at the airport when you pre-book your transfer with Hoppa Dubai , a reliable and safe service for solo females.

Travelling Onwards (check visas before you travel)

Because of the short distances it’s easy to combine Dubai solo travel with other Emirate states, plus you only need one visa for the whole of the UAE.

To Oman : If you are planning a solo trip from Dubai to Oman, Al Darah border is two hours from Dubai (make sure you get an entry and exit stamp and have Omani currency). If you choose to drive the Musandam Peninsula is a dramatic drive.

To Saudi : Currently women are not allowed to drive in Saudi so you can’t take a hire car here. Visas need to be applied for before you travel.

Where can I go from here?

  • Oman – 1 hour
  • Iran – 1.5 hrs

Is this enough or would anyone recommend anything for me. There is many countries I have been but wouldn’t travel too alone but I have been told I should be safe here. Any recommendations or advice would be great full

Hi Rebecca, thanks for your comment. This site is great for knowing how much to budget https://www.budgetyourtrip.com/united-arab-emirates/dubai There are lots of budget things you can do in Dubai and I recommend doing the hop-on hop-off bus tour which used to include a boat trip on a traditional dhow. I think because the laws in Dubai are so strict it’s a safe destination to visit. I recommend joining our Girls about the Globe Facebook group too. Some of our members live there. Have a wonderful time x

10 tips for women travelling to dubai, uae.

Zafigo’s Quick Guide to Dubai for Women Travelling Alone or with Family and Friends

D ubai is fast becoming the Vegas of the Middle East – a flashy playground where you’ll be spoilt for choice in every way, whether it’s dining, entertainment or shopping. If you want to go beyond the shine and glitz, you will also find an emirate (dynastic state) that’s rich in heritage, proud of its rapid growth and working hard to retain and develop its cultural relevance. Dubai is a very safe place to visit for everyone, especially for women, thanks to the penalties of the Islamic law and the fairly liberal attitude of the reigning Sheikh. That, and their friendly attitude towards foreigners from around the world has made Dubai a buzzing hub for international trade. Many expatriates find life here rather enjoyable and comfortable. As global as its outlook is, however, Dubai never loses its identity and culture. Tourists should be aware of and respect local customs and norms. Here are 10 tips to help you make the most of your visit to this wonderful jewel of the Middle East:

1. Plan your trip between October to April, or risk melting

dubai-skyline-during-sunset

The weather is most enjoyable between October and April, with guaranteed sunshine almost every day, and temperatures ranging between the high 20s to the low 30s (Celsius). Evenings can present cool gentle breezes, easily managed with a light extra layer if needed. After April, you will face soaring temperatures that can easily reach 45°C and up, coupled with heavy humidity. The evenings won’t bring any respite either. If you’re looking to spend most of your time indoors exploring the many malls, then you may be okay, but if you’re planning to hit the outdoors, you may want to reconsider.

2. Shop till you drop

If you’re a shopaholic, you’ll enjoy ticking every mall off your list. The Dubai Mall , the world’s biggest, is the place to find almost every brand ever created, an indoor aquarium, an ice rink, an adventure park and a cinema. You can literally spend days here! In the unlikely event that you don’t find what you’re looking for at The Dubai Mall, head over to Mall of the Emirates . And when you want to take a break, pop by the indoor snow park and play with the resident penguins. But if you’re looking for an authentic, local shopping experience, fret not. You can step away from the air-conditioned malls and head to the souk s (marketplace) in Deira. Choose from gold, textile, spice or perfume souks. Here, simply wander through the lanes, while taking in the sights, sounds and aromas. And feel free to haggle here; it’s definitely expected!

3. Hit the slopes

ski-dubai

Skiing in the desert? Absolutely. Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates offers what’s reportedly the world’s largest indoor ski slope, complete with real snow and a black run (an expert trail). This is definitely worth checking out, even if only for the bragging rights. Non-skiers won’t feel left out; Ski Dubai offers lessons for beginners, or you can visit the snow park, where you can literally chill out away from the desert heat.

4. Check out the art scene

Although not renowned as a centre of excellence for art (yet), there are pockets in Dubai where the arts scene is burgeoning. Alserkal Avenue is the best example of this, and is fast becoming the region’s foremost arts hub. Located within Dubai’s industrial zone, it comprises of a cluster of warehouses and public spaces that bring together artists from different disciplines. Exhibitions, events and talks are held regularly to bring people together and foster creative collaboration. You will find an eclectic mix of people, all forms of artistic expressions and plenty of food trucks.

5. Camp under the stars

desert-safari-camp-dubai

Dubai is fast-paced, so when you want to get away from it all, sign up for a desert safari to experience the majestic beauty of desert sands under a sky full of stars. There are different ways to get there with many tour group options available. A day trip leaves in the morning and usually covers a ride on the sand dunes and a falcon interaction, followed by dinner and dancing at the camp. You will get to try shisha (hookah), henna painting and also belly dancing. Some tour operators offer overnight camping with facilities and activities varying, depending on budget, but even the basic experience is not too shabby. Heading out in your own car to the desert is not recommended, as non-specialist vehicles have a tendency to get stuck and no one wants to be out in the desert with limited supplies.

6. From street delights to fine dining

If you’re new to Dubai, you will be warned of the ‘Dubai stone’ (a measurement unit equivalent to 6kg) – roughly the amount of weight gained within a few weeks of moving to the Emirate! Why? Because you’re simply spoilt for choice when it comes to dining. Just about every cuisine as well as outlets of famous restaurants from around the world can be found here. Choose from fine dining at revered eateries such as Nobu, Zuma, Le Petite Maison or keep it casual and enjoy the institution known as Ravi’s for the best Indian/Pakistani food this side of the Arabian Sea. Ravi’s even stays open until the early hours, and nothing beats a late-night curry! Dubai has recently seen a surge in casual bar and dining concepts too, that gently transition you from dining to dancing. A favourite is Miss Lily’s – a Jamaican-themed restaurant where the food is authentic and the music will get you on your feet. If food trucks are more your kind of thing, check out the Last Exit on the way to Abu Dhabi. It’s a great pit stop with countless food trucks offering you various refuelling options.

7. You can rely on public transport

dubai-metro

Dubai’s infamous for its traffic congestion and you can get caught in snarls that last for hours. Everybody has a story about the time they got stuck on Sheikh Zayed Road, or missed an exit and had to drive miles to loop back. If you’re new to Dubai and only here for a short time, it’s much easier to take public transport. The metro and tram carriages are air-conditioned, as are the bus shelters.

Women travellers should look out for taxis with pink tops which are operated by women drivers in matching pink uniforms. You’ll find them at the airports, major shopping malls, or can book one through the RTA Dubai mobile app (available for Android and Apple devices). It’s always good to provide your driver with a local landmark as well as the address. Dubai is currently implementing a new addressing system, and with the vast ongoing construction, it’s understandable that taxi drivers will get confused. Be patient and inform them of the landmarks that are closest to where you want to go.

While we’re on the topic of transport, one of the appeals of Dubai is its connectivity. The city’s location in the Middle East makes it easy to jet around just about anywhere. You can hop on a flight from Dubai to Egypt , the UK, the US or even other parts of Asia with ease.

8. Cover up in public places, especially malls

Dubai has a high percentage of expatriates, so it’s easy to settle into a ‘western familiarity’ with regards to dress sense. Dubai is a tolerant place, but you should respect local customs and norms. Bars and clubs tend to be more relaxed but when out and about during the day, especially when at a mall, be sure to wear a dress that falls to the knees and cover your shoulders (a sleeveless top is okay, but spaghetti straps are frowned upon). At hotel pools and public beaches, one-piece swimwear is fine and even bikinis are acceptable, but thongs are not. Malls tend to be stricter and most will publish a dress code, as these places are entertainment hubs for locals and therefore, it’s even more important to be aware of customs and etiquette.

9. Be extra respectful during the holy month of Ramadan

ramadan

If you’re visiting during the holy month of Ramadan, do know that this is a very sacred time, and visitors need to respect the traditions and customs that surround it. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which falls at different times of the Gregorian calendar each year. It celebrates the date when, according to Islamic tradition, the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. Muslims worldwide demonstrate their faith and discipline through a month-long fast, nightly prayers and various charitable acts. Eating, drinking and smoking in public is prohibited before sunset – and this applies to visitors too. You will find many restaurants are closed, boarded up or only available for home delivery. Do be extra mindful of dress codes during this time, as modesty and tradition are emphasised more than usual. Remember that many of those around you will not have eaten or drunk since sunrise. That said, Dubai has a different magic at this time, and joining an iftar (the breaking of fast meal) is an experience and an opportunity to mingle with locals.

10. Indulge in an all-inclusive brunch at the hotels

In Dubai, the working week runs Sunday through Thursday, so these legendary brunches are held every Friday (except during Ramadan) to signal the beginning of the weekend. Expect an open buffet spanning entire floors and unlimited drinks packages. It’s quite possibly the height of gluttony, and must be seen to truly understand the scale. Many hotels will give you access to all their restaurants, which will serve up unlimited helpings of their signature dishes. There are often cocktail bars, craft beers and if you’re willing to splurge, enough bubbly to ensure you’ve celebrated every major event in your life all over again. Go with friends and make a full day of it, as many of the livelier brunches also offer discounted after-parties to keep the fun going.

Is Dubai Safe for Female Travelers?

SOLO FEMALE TRAVEL IN DUBAI – THINGS TO DO + MORE

TRAVELING TO DUBAI AS A SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER

Table of Contents

Are you planning a trip  to Dubai as a solo female traveler? Then this post is for you!

Dubai, a dazzling gem in the United Arab Emirates, is a city of superlatives. Known for its breathtaking skyline, dominated by the Burj Khalifa , the world’s tallest building, Dubai merges futuristic innovation with rich cultural heritage.

This city in the Middle East, nestled in the Arabian Desert, continues to captivate visitors with its ambitious projects and luxurious lifestyle. But what it is really like for regular travelers? For solo female travelers? Or for anyone who does a Dubai solo travel trip?

When I started the blog, my intention wasn’t to focus strongly on travels to the United Arab Emirates. Still, somehow, Dubai has become one of the main focuses of my blog (apparently with my all-time favorite country Switzerland ). After many visits and trying out a lot of different activities in Dubai , I feel confident enough to write about my experiences as a solo female traveler in Dubai .

Some of the questions I get asked the most is: Is Dubai safe for solo female travelers? I also get asked a lot about the best things to do in Dubai solo. So, today I am happy to answer your questions in this “Solo Female Travel in Dubai guide.”

Dinner in the Sky Dubai with Arzo Travels

TIPS FOR SOLO TRAVELERS TO DUBAI

Dubai is, I think, one of the safest places that I can think of and the best place to travel solo as a female.

Are there security issues? Yes. Can we trust all the security information we get from the government in the UAE?  Surely   not. However, this post is not about the political situation in the UAE (in terms of women´s rights or human rights) but rather how it feels actually to be there (while neglecting the political situation) as a solo female traveler.

Security Aspects in Dubai

Keep in mind that there is no real transparency when it comes to Dubai – so, we might not get the full picture, so I can only talk about my perception as a solo female traveler.

Overall, based on a woman´s traveler perspective , the country of the United Arab Emirates is totally safe . Although people might think countries in the Middle East might not be the safest places, I cannot second that – especially not for the UAE and Dubai.

  • The crime rate in Dubai is extremely low , also because there are serious punishments for many crimes.
  • It seems that the police are capable of doing their jobs efficiently . Maybe it is better not to know by which means the police achieve that. However, this makes me feel more secure than in many other places.  I have been told by a person who lives there that even if something gets stolen, they will find it very quickly and solve the crime. After a few days in Dubai, I felt safe enough to leave my bag (unattended) at the table while going to the buffet and getting food for several minutes. In Germany , I would not do so. I actually get very careless in Dubai because it seriously feels safe. This does not mean that you should be like me, though.
  • Actually, since alcohol is not drunk that much in public , I felt much more secure at night than in many parts of Western countries, where drunk people run around at the weekend and make me feel uncomfortable.
  • I feel totally fine strolling popular places like Dubai Marina or Downtown Dubai by night .
  • However, avoid Dubai Deira at night and exercise common sense and you should be fine!

Dress Code For Solo Female Travelers

Though there is no strict dress code for women. What does it mean though?

When you travel to Dubai, you should consider both the local culture and climate when deciding on your wardrobe. Dubai is modern yet holds traditional Islamic values, so dressing modestly is key.

So, you do not need to wear a scarf, long-sleeved tops or long pants . However, I would advise you to not wear the shortest pants you own or the most revealing tops.

For malls, there is actually a dress code (that, knowingly or unknowingly is often ignored by tourists): Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, especially in public areas like malls, markets, and streets.

At the beach or hotel pools , swimwear is acceptable, but it should be conservative, meaning a bikini is okay but not necessarily a string bikini (again, something many tourists ignore). It’s also wise to carry a scarf or shawl for impromptu head covering if needed when visiting religious sites or out of respect for local customs.

Since the climate in Dubai is hot and humid for most of the year, lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen are the key. In air-conditioned indoor areas, however, it can get quite chilly, so having a light sweater or scarf on hand is useful.

How to Get Around as a Solo Traveler

As a female traveler in Dubai, navigating the city is convenient and safe, with options like taxis, the metro, and buses.

TAXIS/UBERS

In Dubai, my experience with regular taxis, easily hailed or called, was always remarkably safe. Also, using Uber has never been a problem.

For an added layer of comfort, especially for women and families, the city offers “ pink taxis ,” exclusively driven by female drivers. These taxis, easily distinguishable by their color, provide an added sense of security and can be booked by calling 04-2080808.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Public transportation in Dubai is known for its cleanliness, efficiency, and high safety standards, including well-lit stations and vehicles, regular security patrols, and CCTV surveillance.

As a woman, I have used public transportation in Dubai often and without any problems. However, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Metro : The Dubai Metro has dedicated compartments for women and children only on each train. These are clearly marked and no men are allowed.

I always make sure to sit there as I have to admit the regular compartments make me feel uncomfortable as the staring of men, who are mostly from India , Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Afghanistan, make me uncomfortable. It probably feels a bit like India, so these women’s compartments are worth a lot.

Buses : Similarly, public buses in Dubai have sections reserved for women. These areas are typically located at the front of the bus and are separated from the general seating to provide a comfortable and secure space for female passengers.

Trams : Dubai Trams also have special sections for women and children.

Water Taxis: In addition, water taxis in Dubai can be a scenic and enjoyable way to travel, with no specific gender-based arrangements but are generally safe and comfortable for all passengers.

Alcohol as a Woman

Alcohol consumption in Dubai is allowed for tourists and non-Muslims, but caution is advised and be mindful of your alcohol intake.

Why? First, as solo female travelers, we always have to be more cautious. That is just a sad reality.

However, in Dubai it can affect you in two ways: If an incident, such as an assault, occurs under the influence of alcohol, local authorities may enforce stricter legal repercussions, potentially leading to penalties for the intoxicated individual.

Dubai’s laws on public behavior are stringent, and any misconduct related to alcohol can have serious consequences.

Accommodation for Female Solo Travelers

Dubai is known for its safety, including at night, but as a precaution, particularly for female travelers, it might be best to avoid staying in Dubai Deira – the old part of Dubai. This area is lively during the day but can feel less secure after dark, despite being one of the more budget-friendly options for accommodation in Dubai.

It’s a good idea to allocate a bit more of your budget towards lodging and perhaps cut back on spending on activities or dining.

For solo female travelers, areas like Dubai Downtown, JBR Walk, or Dubai Marina are the best places to stay as these areas are safer and more comfortable alternatives.

Dubai Marina is the best place to stay if you prefer to be in a  lively part of Dubai, with the Marina, and numerous restaurants & cafes close by, but the hotels do not have direct beach access. However, you are quite close to several attractions, including Palm Jumeirah. My favorite hotel in Marina is this 5-star Hotel: Grosvenor House in Dubai

➡️ BOOK YOUR STAY AT GROSVENOR HOUSE HERE

JBR Walk is a lovely area with many restaurants and shops, most hotels have beach access. It is also close to Dubai Marina and Madinat Jumeirah. Check out the 5-star  Resort: JA Ocean View Hotel Dubai.

➡️ BOOK YOUR STAY AT JA OCEAN VIEW HOTEL DUBAI HERE

A nice 3-star  budget hotel is Ibis Al Barsha.  Admittedly, it is  not perfectly located as it is further from some of the best places to visit in Dubai, but it offers good value for money and is still quite close to Dubai Marina. However, if you choose this place, you will also have to pay more for transportation.

➡️ BOOK YOUR STAY AT  IBIS AL BARSHA HERE

Accommodation costs for solo travelers are nearly the same as sharing a room, which is a key factor to consider when planning a solo trip to Dubai. Yes, this is one of the main drawbacks when it comes to solo traveling all over the world – but in Dubai, where prices for accommodation is so high, it is even more frustrating.

You can find a detailed accommodation guide for Dubai here.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN DUBAI AS A SOLO TRAVELER

Dubai, a city that epitomizes luxury and innovation, offers an extensive range of activities catering to diverse tastes. Whether it’s marveling at the architectural wonder of the Burj Khalifa, experiencing the thrill of desert safaris, or exploring the historic old part of the city, Dubai has it all.

There is no shortage of activities in Dubai you can choose from – this post focuses on solo travelers in Dubai. So here are fun things to do in Dubai by yourself.

Dubai Downtown Sightseeing

When you travel in Dubai alone, you can be sure to feel safe in Dubai Downtown. It is the city’s busy tourism hub and home to many attractions like  Burj Khalifa (the tallest building in the world), Dubai Mall (the biggest mall in the world), and Dubai Fountain (the biggest water fountain show in the world).

Dubai Mall at night

This part is crazy. Especially at night, it is crazy! There is no shortage of superlatives, and it will not be boring to travel alone. There is so much to see that you will probably be too overwhelmed even to realize that you are on your own.

7 days in Dubai - best vintage points

You can visit Dubai Downtown easily as a solo traveler. If you are on a budget, you can enjoy the tallest building from a distance, watch the water fountain show for free, and do window shopping.

  • If you want to get to the “Top of Burj Khalifa” (also known as the Top of the World ), it saves you time to book your tickets in advance.  Ticket prices vary depending on the level of access (levels 124 and 125 only are cheaper than access to level 148) and also the time of your visit.

Get the best rates for your Burj Khalifa tickets here:

  • Levels 124 & 125
  • Levels 124 & 124 and 148
  • Levels 124 & 125, including a dinner at Burj Club

Dubai Desert Safari

Desert safaris are one of the most popular activities in Dubai. The Dubai desert offers a mesmerizing landscape of endless dunes and a unique ecosystem, serving as a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Experience traditional Bedouin culture, enjoy dune bashing, and witness spectacular sunsets that paint the desert in vibrant hues.

I love a good  desert safari in Dubai . I am actually not sure how many I have done so far. But what I know for sure is that I loved each tour.

A desert safari is not only for families or love birds (the BBQ in the desert, which often comes with a safari, is indeed extremely romantic) but a top thing to do for ANY traveler to Dubai.

Desert safari on a layover

The desert safari is actually one of the best activities to make friends . Depending on the kind of safari you get picked up from your hotel, and while there are tons of jeeps (like a caravan), it feels like you form a little team with the other ones in your car.

Most tours include dune bashing, belly-dance shows, a diner, and stargazing.

Somehow, no matter if I ended up with a family or a group of friends, we stuck together, dined together, and had a great time together. If you prefer to be yourself during your whole Dubai trip, you can, of course.

But it is a great way to connect with other Dubai travelers and exchange ideas and experiences. There are also morning desert tours, but my tip is to do the evening desert safari – another fun activity to do alone in Dubai at night.

Find the best desert safari tour for your trip.

  • Find one of the most affordable desert safaris here.
  • Do you prefer the morning desert safari? Then find out more here .

Here is another top place to visit in Dubai alone – one of the numerous beaches!

Dubai’s beaches are renowned for their pristine sands and crystal-clear waters, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and luxury. From the bustling Jumeirah Beach to the exclusive shores of Palm Jumeirah, these beaches provide an array of activities, including water sports, sunbathing, and dining with stunning views of the Arabian Gulf.

Why is Dubai better

Sometimes I am paranoid – unfortunately. That is probably why I am not so much into beach holidays. I am always afraid my stuff gets stolen while I am in the water. I am stressed out and not relaxed. In Dubai, I don’t have this feeling, just because Dubai is so freakingly safe. I can leave my valuables at the beach and hop into the water.

And I even feel safe enough to turn my back and leave my stuff unattended for a few minutes . All thanks to a low crime rate. So, if you are in Dubai, you can feel free to hit the beach – even if you are as paranoid as I am. Okay, still – exercise common sense and keep an eye on your items but there is no need for paranoia.

The best beaches in Dubai to visit solo : La Mer , Jumeirah Beach (Kite Beach), and the private beaches on Dubai Palm.

Boat and Abra Rides

Given the Persian Gulf and Dubai Creek, you have enough options to experience boat rides.

I openly admit that I am into boat rides – speedboats, dinner cruises, or whatsoever. Just put me on a boat and let me enjoy the city from a different perspective.

Bra Ride in Dubai things to do in Dubai in 2 days

Dubai is great for boat tours – as a solo traveler, you have the chance to make friends. If you prefer being on your own, you can enjoy the beauty of the city while sailing around.

If you are on a budget, try out an abra ride in Dubai Deira and the Creek.

Dubai Creek, a historic saltwater estuary, is the lifeblood of the city, bustling with traditional abras and offering a glimpse into the old-world charm amidst Dubai’s modern skyline.

The traditional water taxis are fun, very cheap, and a great way to get around. It is just 0,30€ for a ride – a fun and very affordable thing to do in Dubai alone.

Here are some more boat cruise options:

  • Check out this Dubai Marina dinner cruise with drinks and live music
  • Here is a speedboat tour which allows you to see some of the city´s main sights
  • This is a new boat cruise with a buffet dinner and afterward, you are dropped off to watch a La Perle show.

Souks in the Old Part of Dubai

In the heart of Dubai’s heritage lies the vibrant area of the Gold and Spice Souks , a bustling maze of narrow lanes lined with shops offering an array of exotic spices, dazzling gold jewelry, and traditional artifacts. This historic quarter, situated near Dubai Creek, encapsulates the city’s rich trading history and cultural diversity.

Some females have told me they disliked strolling the old town of Dubai, Dubai Deira, because people stare. I understand their point. It is a lovely area full of life with many foreign sellers who actually stare at women (including catcalling).

Which place to visit - Abu Dhabi or Dubai

I normally dislike this. However, I tend to dress more conservatively and try to take it easy. I talk to the salespeople and ignore them if it gets too much. If you know how to ignore people or keep them at a distance, it is fun to visit – even as a solo traveler. Even as a female solo traveler.

It probably is NOT a place I would visit in the evening on my own , though.

Day Trip to Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the biggest city/emirate in the country. It is a blend of opulent modernity and rich cultural heritage, known for its stunning landmarks like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi might be less famous but also a great place to visit. It is about 130km from Dubai and makes a great day trip.

If you are by yourself, you can do a guided tour to Abu Dhabi – or take a taxi. While the latter option is not very environmentally friendly, the taxi ride prices are not high. You pay around 50-70€ for more than 100 km (so 100-140€ in total).

Arzo Travels in Abu DHabi

In Abu Dhabi, you can visit the most beautiful building in the world – Grand Zayed Mosque . But there are more fun things to do in Abu Dhabi. Like Dubai, Abu Dhabi is super safe to travel alone.

  • Check out guided tours to Abu Dhabi from Dubai.
  • If you are looking for things to do in Abu Dhabi in 1 day, check out my quick guide here.

Dubai Marina

Marina is an expensive neighborhood in Dubai with stunning skyscrapers, many restaurants & shops, and one of the largest man-made marinas in the world. So you can admire the skyscrapers – the density of high buildings is crazy.

Dubai Marina at nigt from Pier 7

While it is also nice to walk along in the daytime (if it isn’t too hot), it is even more fun in the evening . When the buildings are illuminated, the restaurants get busy, and people get here to enjoy their evenings. I have been here so many times on my own, and it makes me so happy to stroll the area.

Since there are many foreigners from all over the world, families, couples, and solo travelers, it is also easy to meet other people and make friends. It is also easy to get to know people here because it is also popular amongst younger people who enjoy a night out.

Dinner in the Sky

Dinner in the Sky Dubai is a restaurant service that uses a crane to hoist its diners, table, guests (up to 10-16), and waiting staff 150 feet (50 meters) into the air. If you want to meet people and like to have dinner with others – then try out Dinner in the Sky (or have lunch or high tea).

How to book Dinner in the Sky Dubai

This way you get to meet others and don’t have to dine by yourself (if you mind that). I found it a lot of fun. Music, good food (vegetarian/vegan food available on request), entertaining staff, and hopefully some nice dinner guests – this is a fun activity for solo travelers.

  • Click here to book your Dinner in the Sky experience

JBR – The Walk

JBR – The Walk is a popular outdoor dining and shopping promenade in the Jumeirah Beach Residence/Dubai Marina area. It is another fun place to visit solo. There is a beach section, restaurants, bars, and shops.  Whether you like to be alone to meet others – here is the chance to do both.

Places to see in Dubai in 7 days

Bring your towel and swimwear if you plan to spend a day at the beach. Water activities are big here – you can rent some equipment and try out water ski. SUP, or any other of the many options.

Dubai Museum

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE MUSEUM IS CURRENTLY CLOSED AND UNDER RENOVATION

If you like to see a different side of Dubai, I recommend visiting the Dubai Museum in the city’s old town. The museum is located in Al Fahidi Fort – the oldest building in the city and features galleries about souks, marine life, and more.

Established in 1787, the fort has served various roles, including a royal residence, an arsenal, and a prison, before its transformation under Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum’s rule.

Must see in Dubai is Dubai Museum

Coinciding with the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, it was converted into the Dubai Museum. This museum brings to life the cultural heritage and pre-oil era of Dubai, with detailed exhibits depicting traditional Arab homes, mosques, marketplaces, and agricultural landscapes, along with scenes showcasing the desert and maritime heritage of the region.

For a small entrance fee (about 1€), you can learn a lot about this rapidly growing city’s history and culture.

Best Time to Visit Dubai

The best time to visit Dubai is between November and March , when the weather is relatively cooler and more pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 17°C to 30°C (63°F to 86°F). This period, known as the Dubai winter , is ideal for outdoor activities, sightseeing, and exploring the city’s numerous attractions without the extreme heat of the summer months.

The cooler weather is perfect for desert safaris, beach outings, and enjoying the lush outdoor terraces of the city’s many restaurants and cafes.

However, it’s also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices, especially for accommodation. Despite this, the comfortable weather and the lively cultural scene make this period the most favorable time for a visit to Dubai.

If you want to visit Dubai in the summer months, check out my guide to find out what to do then.

Conclusion: What to Do Alone in Dubai

I think Dubai is one of the most secure places to visit as a solo female traveler. Of course, there is no freedom of the press in Dubai – so we only learn about things the government wants us to learn about. So, even if there are incidents, we will probably never find out. However, from my own personal experience – as someone who regularly does a solo trip to Dubai – I can say that I feel safe.

It is not only because of the absence of mugging but also because of getting hit by men constantly. Also, Dubai is fun . I travel solo because I enjoy doing activities on my own. But I also am chatty and like to meet new people once in a while – and meeting people is quite easy in this city.

By the way: I have a thing for countries in the Middle East though I have not traveled much in that area, mostly because I do not know whether I could feel safe in the region. Lebanon is very high on my list).

Tips For Traveling to Dubai as a Woman

Traveling to Dubai might seem daunting if you don’t know how things work there. Fortunately, these tips will help you enjoy your stay to the fullest without disrespecting anyone.

1. Install Helpful Apps

Dubai is perhaps one of the most advanced countries utilizing technology to improve its operations. There are many things to do when you have installed helpful apps.

It may be challenging for you as a first-timer. So, it is beneficial to download any useful application for a smooth trip as a solo woman. Here are some examples of useful apps:

  • Dubai Metro
  • RTA Application

2. Public Transportation is Good

It’s relatively easy to take the subway whether you’re new to Dubai or plan on staying for a couple of days. Using public transportation would be great because it allows you to take a closer look at the buildings, get good scenery and meet many locals.

The transit system is inexpensive, hygienic, and reliable. Uber is also available in Dubai. You can also rent and drive a car.

Keep in mind that Dubai has a significantly greater risk of road accidents than other countries like Europe, owing to drivers exceeding the speed limit.

3. Respect The Religion And Culture

The UAE’s national religion is Islam, and most Emiratis practice it either religiously or culturally. Learn to give respect as a visitor and attempt to understand the basics of their faith.

People in this culture happily share food and often purchase huge dishes for a meal so that everyone can eat from the same dish. So instead of getting food alone, try to join in and share dishes with your Emirati friends.

It is encouraged to greet the locals. Eating with other people would be nice and a good experience while traveling alone.

4. Drink Responsibly

The unending selection of ladies’ nights is one of the major attractions in Dubai. Get a free drink or two on a Tuesday night.

There is a law in Dubai that is extremely strict regarding the consumption of alcohol. Being drunk publicly is equally as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. As a solo female traveler, you’ll want to avoid this situation.

Try to buy drinks at restaurants or at your hotel to prevent harmful scenarios. The police in Dubai do not pursue liquor visitors unless they are raising a problem.

5. There’s a Low Crime Rate

Dubai has a low crime rate and is one of the safest countries in the world. It has an extremely low rate of crime when it comes to robbery and murder.

The Emirates Police Department is very attentive and can assist you with various issues ranging from stealing to traffic incidents. Many women are scared to travel alone, but Dubai is exceptional for solo travelers.

As a big destination for women and other foreigners, Dubai seems to be the most open and western city in the Middle East.

6. Try Camping

If you are looking for an authentic experience, camping in Dubai is a must try. Stargaze, experience the beauty of nature, have a bonfire, and grill food. This country offers a lot of camping spots for adventurous travelers like you. Here are some of the best camping spots in Dubai.

  • Banan Beach
  • Acacia Forest
  • White Sands Beach
  • Arabian Beach Desert Camp
  • Umm Al Quwain Beach
  • Bedouin Camping
  • Fujairah Beach

7. Don’t Forget to Shop

Dubai is one of the best places to go shopping. The Dubai Mall is highly recommended. It is an excellent place to shop for affordable and trendy clothes.

The Dubai Mall is the world’s largest destination for shopping, entertainment, and leisure. It houses an underwater zoo, a skate park, an amusement park, a theater, and practically every brand manufactured.

8. Dress According To Occasion

Although the Dubai government does not compel or demand foreigners or tourists to dress in traditional Islamic attire, travelers should dress conservatively to demonstrate respect and avoid offending anyone.

There are rules to be followed when visiting Dubai. You can’t enter a mosque or museums if you wear clothes that are not appropriate.

Women are encouraged to dress in long-sleeved tops to cover their arms and shoulders, and baggy clothes and pants should cover the legs when entering a mosque.

10 Tips for Solo Female Travel in Dubai

08/19/2021 by Guest Blogger 1 Comment

This guest post is by Monica Chapon, a California-based desert enthusiast.

Exploring the Middle East can often feel intimidating for travelers, and even more so for solo women.

While I personally love to travel throughout this region, I can certainly understand the hesitancy! This is a very misunderstood part of the world, and it isn’t always portrayed as very “female friendly.”

But if you are dreaming of sweeping orange dunes, spice-filled souks, intricately decorated mosques, and a glimpse into Muslim culture, then Dubai in the United Arab Emirates is the perfect place to dip your toes.

The UAE is a small country with a strong religious foundation. Islamic law dictates day-to-day life and traditions in this neighbor to Saudi Arabia. Honestly, it’s quite beautiful.

After an oil boom, Dubai quickly went from a “small town” in the desert to the now-glittering hub that we see today.

Solo female travel in the Dubai desert.

Because of these fast changes, Dubai is truly a city of duality. Each time I visit, I find myself pondering the juxtaposition of towering, record-breaking skyscrapers just minutes away from hand-built, rustic camel farms in the sand.

While the UAE is one of the safest countries in the world to visit, its religious roots and rapid modernization mean that not everyone who lives and works there is accustomed to seeing a solo female traveler.

So, while I highly recommend the UAE as a great place for women who travel alone, it is not without some challenges. Below are my best insights for women traveling solo in Dubai.

Solo Female Travel in Dubai

Burj Khalifa - travel in Dubai.

1. Crime rates are super low.

First and foremost, know that the crime rates in Dubai are very low. Theft and violent crimes are extremely rare. In fact, the rates in the UAE are light-years better than my home country, the United States.

As such, I have never felt unsafe here in terms of crime. I’ve never had any items stolen, and I’ve never felt in danger of any type of attack. (For better or for worse, CCTV is common in downtown Dubai.)

As a solo woman in Dubai, rest assured that you are in a country where the laws are taken very seriously.

2. But you will be stared at.

Realize that while most people will not harass you in any way, you are a bit of an anomaly. Though solo female travel is not a new concept in the Western world, it is still somewhat “new” in this region.

The majority of stares you receive are simply out of curiosity. People will wonder why you are alone or where you are going, and some will just be intrigued about how “different” you may look.

Most men will look away quickly once you return their gaze, proving that it was harmless. But if anyone tries to hold your eye or use it as a reason to approach you, be cautious. Trust your gut. Balance courtesy with caution.

3. Women’s places at school, home, and work differ from those in the West.

It is worth highlighting a bit about women’s roles in Emirati society.

Schools and universities are segregated by gender, though more women attend college than their male counterparts do.

However, the vast majority of women do not enter the workforce and instead opt for marriage and raising children. The Emirati women you do see in the workforce will typically be employed in education, health, and government services. I do see a lot of expat women in the workforce, too.

While I don’t know how much of that is choice and how much is societal expectations, I will say that UAE society places a high value on those roles.

There is no denying that patriarchal ideology is still visible in UAE life, but I do applaud the small strides that the country has taken in recent years.

4. Dubai is a melting pot.

Over 80% of the population in the UAE is made up of expats, and the vast majority of them live in Dubai. Here you will find everyone, from Indians to Pakistanis to Lebanese to Canadians — and everything in between.

Dubai is a true melting pot. It is a colorful blend of many different cultures, living and working in various industries and making a life on this small piece of the Arabian Peninsula.

5. It can cost much less than you think.

You are probably familiar with Dubai’s reputation for riches.

The Burj Al-Arab hotel has a glamorous Royal Suite that goes for $24,000 USD per night. The city built several manmade islands in the shape of palm trees. And there is even an ATM in nearby Abu Dhabi where users can withdraw solid gold . Solid gold!

So, it’s not really surprising that I am often asked how I can afford to stay there.

Luckily, these extreme cases — while plentiful — are not the norm. It’s pretty easy to find hotels and guesthouses for under $40 USD per night. And decent ones, too! Comfortable beds, Wi-Fi, a kitchen, and a washing machine can be included for that price.

I recommend checking in the Deira and Al-Barsha areas for these deals, though I’ve frequently found them in the Marina as well.

Additionally, hostels have started to crop up in Dubai. This was not a thing when I first traveled there seven years ago. With the cultural expectations demanded of men and women, this was not a sleeping arrangement that was “allowed.” Nowadays, it’s an option. (Note that in more conservative areas, like Sharjah, this will likely still not be the case).

Avoid the large and expensive restaurants and opt for tasty, authentic food stalls instead. Falafel sandwiches, fresh-squeezed juices, and aromatic Indian dishes can be had on the cheap.

First Name:

6. You have a lot of transportation options.

In Dubai, there are a lot of ways for solo women to get around.

The metro system is cheap, clean, and on time, in my experience. Uber operates in Dubai, too. And it is possible to hire private drivers, though this will be the more expensive route.

Yes, women can drive and rent a car in the UAE. It will be no problem to do so. However, traffic can be intense in the city, and there are crazy drivers here, just like everywhere else!

One unique transportation option in Dubai is women-only pink taxicabs . If you are feeling particularly nervous, these would be a great way for a solo woman to travel around Dubai. Look for the telltale pink rooftops that indicate “women only.”

Be mindful of how you dress during solo female travel in Dubai. Long pants, loose shirt.

7. Be mindful of how you dress.

In Dubai, you will see a lot of variation in the way that women dress.

Local women typically wear a long black dress called an abaya and a head covering called a hijab. It is not uncommon to see even more conservative dress, such as a full burka, covering women’s entire body except for the eyes. (In contrast, men wear a long white kandoura.)

But you will also see tourists showing cleavage and midriffs, wearing short-shorts, and ultimately dressing like they are in laid-back Bali rather than conservative Dubai.

While you might get away with it, I would strongly caution solo women not to dress this way in Dubai. At the very least, you will be inviting a lot of unwanted attention and certainly offending local sentiments.

Instead, your Dubai packing list should include items like loose palazzo pants, flowy kimonos, and scarves (which will be needed to cover your head when entering mosques). A good rule of thumb is to cover the shoulders, elbows, knees, and head.

8. You may need to work harder to get off the grid.

When I first traveled to the UAE, my goal was to spend most of my time deep in the desert, near the Saudi border, exploring and camping in this beautiful landscape.

Spoiler alert: I did make that happen! And I have done the same thing on almost every subsequent visit.

However, it did take a lot of persistence.

Solo women will have no issues getting around Dubai. But if you are trying to get to the far corners of the country, you will probably run into some issues.

In Islamic culture, it is not common or accepted for a man to be alone with a woman that he is not related to or married to. So it took a lot of persistence for me to find a driver who would do this.

Solo female travel in the Dubai desert.

9. Be aware of local laws.

This is something travelers should do regardless of their destination, and solo female travelers in Dubai are no exception. This is especially important in the UAE, as it is governed by sharia law, which most Western travelers may not be familiar with.

The rules and laws in the UAE forbid such things as drinking alcohol, using crude language, kissing in public, taking someone’s photo without asking (particularly women), homosexuality, and a long list of other infractions.

A few legal exceptions do exist, like purchasing alcohol at larger hotels or establishments. And though Dubai is the most liberal of all seven emirates, I still recommend not testing the waters.

10. Solo women will get a unique perspective.

One benefit of being a woman in Muslim countries is that you will get a unique perspective that your male counterparts cannot.

Men are typically not able to interact in any way with local women they are not related to. But as a woman, you will be able to approach other women, speak with them about the area, or ask them for help if you need assistance.

One of the experiences I value most in traveling is to get to know local people and customs, so this is one of my favorite benefits of solo female travel in Dubai.

The United Arab Emirates is one of the safest countries in the world to visit, and Dubai in particular is one of the most liberal of all Middle Eastern cities.

It’s a great place to travel if you want a safe and comfortable crash course in Middle Eastern life. If you go there knowing the benefits and challenges of solo female travel in Dubai, you are more likely to have a fun and successful trip!

The Roaming Family

The perfect girl’s trip to Dubai

by Melissa | Jan 30, 2018 | Dubai , The Middle East | 4 comments

The perfect girl’s trip to Dubai

Because we lived in the Middle East for a time, Dubai was a weekend trip for us and we took advantage of that! A quick hop, skip and a jump, Dubai is actually an extremely family friendly destination. However, because of it’s distance to the U.S., a lot of people reserve it for a “stopover trip” on the way to a safari or a girl’s trip. I’ve worked on many a girl’s trip to Dubai and I have it down to a science!

The vast majority of flights from the west arrive into Dubai at night – sometimes as late as 11:50pm! Friends arriving from the U.S. or Europe should take this into consideration when planning a trip because you miss an entire day flying. i.e. if you leave on Friday, you generally won’t arrive in Dubai until Saturday evening. When you arrive in Dubai, it’s always good to have your transportation to your hotel secured. Dubai airport is large and chaotic. Make things easier on yourself and hire a car beforehand. Many of my services on the ground in Dubai also include a meet and greet service, helping you navigate baggage claim bureaucracy and find your way through the crowds. When you finally find your way to baggage claim, you’ll have to collect your bag and then have it X-rayed before you enter the country. Do not bring pork of any kind or porn of any kind (including magazines, toys, etc). Visa’s are available on arrival for most Western countries. Check your consulate.

A note on drinking: if you want to stock your hotel/apartment with wine, buy it at the airport before you leave. The only liquor stores around are there for residents with alcohol licenses. You won’t be able to buy wine or beer anywhere else  However, you will be able to buy it in licensed restaurants – usually attached to 4 or 5 star hotels.

Accommodations:

So many choices so little time! Dubai has everything from hostels to 5 star hotels. I definitely don’t recommend hostels or anything below a 4 star hotel 🙂 Culture is very different in Dubai and a 3 star hotel is not like a 3 star in the U.S. When I have a girl’s trip to Dubai, I try to find my clients an apartment of some sort and there are plenty to choose from. A list of some of my favorites include:

JA Oasis Beach Tower – offers 2, 3 and 4 – bedroom accommodations, all with kitchens. Oasis is a great location, with a good pool, within walking distance to plenty of restaurants and bars. There is a also a little market nearby to stock up your kitchen. It also delivers! It’s also close the Marina, a great place to explore.

Anatara The Palm Dubai – a fantastic resort located on The Palm, a manmade island jutting off the coast of the city. The island is shaped like a palm tree and something only Dubai could get away with! Anatara is an easy place to get to, yet offers some respite from the hustle of the city. This property has 1 and 2 – bedroom apartments and large villas that are perfect for groups. It also has fantastic dining options, a great pool and a beautiful beach.

Ramada Plaza Jumeirah Beach – a solid,  star resort that is perfect for ladies working on a budget, but still wanting to stay in a good location. This property offers everything from standard rooms up to 4 bedroom apartments. It’s pretty central and easy to get to all the places a girl’s trip to Dubai would require.

Things to Do:

What doesn’t Dubai have to do. Dubai really went all out in trying to make themselves a cultural and tourist destination and spared no expense. From indoor skiing to waterskiing, there’s a plethora of things to do. For a perfect girl’s trip to Dubai, I recommend:

*at least a half day tour of this incredible city.

*a sunset desert safari – truly an incredible experience.

*a day outing to Abu Dhabi – another very interesting Gulf city – Abu Dhabi is just as impressive as Dubai. Be sure to have lunch at Emirate’s Palace – just to say you did!

*a dinner cruise along Dubai Creek – a fantastic way to see the city by night.

girl's-trip-to-Dubai

Dubai really is an incredible place for a girl’s trip or a friend’s trip. Obviously an unusual choice, it’s better suited for people who want something really different for their trip. Something other than the typical Mexico or Caribbean vacation. If you can stomach the flight, it’s so worth it!

Essential Tips To Keep in Mind When Traveling to Dubai as a Woman

Accommodation.

There is no shortage of finding good and comfortable accommodations in Dubai. You get an amazing assortment of choices that suit all types of budgets. However, it is always better to find accommodation in Downtown Dubai, as the place is right in the midst of bustling activities. Also, book your accommodations in advance to avoid any hassles in your trip after you have arrived in Dubai.

Transportation

When traveling to Dubai as a woman, public transportation like taxis, buses, and metros are very safe – but there aren’t many running late nights.

Renting a car or taxi rides are good options to explore the city. Always make note of the taxi agency’s name, taxi number, and the driver’s contact number – which can come in handy during your travels. Women can also choose pink colored taxies for their travels, which are exclusively for women passengers and are driven by women drivers dressed up in Arabian attires.

Etiquette to Follow:

While traveling to Dubai, it definitely comes in handy to keep yourself informed about the etiquettes to be followed in the city so you have a stress-free vacation.  Though UAE is a strict follower of Islamic culture and rules, Dubai is a bit flexible, liberal, and lenient.

Just keep in mind these following points and you are all sorted out for your Dubai solo holiday.

  • Dress appropriately. In Dubai, it is very important to respect the culture. Make sure your fashion sense does not offend the locals. Shoulders and knees should always be covered. When in doubt always carry a cardigan and wear long pants. Swimwear is allowed on the beach, but cover yourself once you are out of the water. Adhere to dress rules of wearing a burqa when you enter a mosque or any religious place.
  • Avoid any kind of public display of affection, as it offends locals and is considered inappropriate behavior in public.
  • Do not drink alcohol in public. If you are keen on drinking alcohol, then choose a hotel with inbuilt bar facility. Also, pay special attention to not eating in public if you are traveling to Dubai in the Ramadan month. Practice common courtesy. A bit of useful Arabic phrases will also come in handy with locals.
  • If you are renting a car, make sure you are thoroughly up-to-speed with the traffic rules of Dubai (no pun intended)- as the city is quite strict. Even as a pedestrian, you should be aware of where to cross the roads.
  • Also, practice common sense. Find information and do some research before visiting Dubai. Be aware of various laws and rules of the city. Respect the culture and try to blend in than stand out of the crowd. Wear sunscreen and airy clothes to get relief from Dubai’s heat. Keep yourself hydrated at all times!
  • Dubai is safe for women – as sexual harassment is a serious offense here and gravely punished by law. But it is always better to stay alert for your own safety. Carry emergency contact numbers. Purchase a local SIM card and download all useful Dubaiapps that can come in handy on your Dubai travel. Make sure you inform your family and friends about your travel plans and give them a detail of your trip itinerary.  Practice protective behaviors and listen to your instincts and intuition. If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, leave the scene and seek a safer place. Always keep some money with you and take care of your belongings, passports, and documents.

Traveling solo as a woman is a great experience. It gives you a feeling of confidence and independence.  Also, you don’t need to wait up for others and explore a place as per your wish.

So ladies, give it a try, let Dubai be your choice of destination for your next solo traveling experience!

15 places to go for a long weekend from Dubai

By Nicola Chilton

Tbilisi Georgia

With Dubai’s strategic location and huge flight network, it’s only natural that heading out on a long weekend trip is de rigueur for its residents. Here are 15 of our favourite destinations within a four-hour flight from Dubai , from urban centres to dazzling desertscapes and relaxing seaside spots.

Alula Saudi Arabia

The tomb of Lihyan Son of Kuza in Alula, Saudi Arabia

1. AlUla, Saudi Arabia

With ancient stone-hewn tombs, otherworldly landscapes and an oasis of more than two million date palms, there’s much to love about Saudi Arabia 's AlUla. Less crowded than Petra, AlUla’s Nabataean tombs, including the tomb of Lihyan Son of Kuza, carved from one enormous solitary rock, are some of the most photogenic sites in the region. But there’s much to discover beyond them, like the Ashar Valley’s dazzling Maraya, the world’s largest mirrored building that reflects the red rock scenery from every angle, and the mountain of Jabal Ikmah, covered in thousands of inscriptions and pictographs, recently included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World register. Go in winter for restaurants that pop up around the area, as well as a full calendar of concerts, hot air balloon flights and more.

Jordan's charming capital Amman

Jordan's charming capital, Amman

2. Amman, Jordan

The Jordanian capital is the gateway to Petra and the Dead Sea, both of which can be visited on (fairly long) day trips from the city. But Amman has enough charm to easily fill a long weekend. Its city-centre archaeological sites, from the Citadel to the Roman Theatre, are easily accessible, but it’s also less than an hour by car to the well-preserved sprawling Roman ruins of Jerash. Amman is also a place to dedicate time to eating, from streetside falafel and foul to elegant restaurants and cafés. Head to Fakhreldin in the house of a former Prime Minister for nostalgic Levantine flavours, or to Sufra on Rainbow Street for hearty home-style Jordanian dishes. If you want to learn how to cook these flavours for yourself, Beit Sitti is a friendly cooking school run by three sisters and their mother using recipes handed down through the family for generations.

Pearl Roundabout Manama Bahrain

Pearl Roundabout in Bahrain's understated capital, Manama

Understated Bahrain doesn’t receive the same attention as many of its Gulf neighbours, but there’s plenty to do on a long weekend. This is a destination with a rich history, from restored merchant houses to forts, Dilmun burial mounds, and the UNESCO World Heritage certified Bahrain Pearling Path, a 3.5-kilometre trail leading from the seashore to the heart of Muharraq.  It’s also well served by luxury resorts, including outposts of Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and Jumeirah, for those looking for an easy and relaxed family getaway.

In Lebanon's capital Beirut city and beach go sidebyside

In Lebanon's capital Beirut, city and beach go side-by-side

4. Beirut, Lebanon

In spite of all of its troubles, Beirut consistently proves itself to be an irresistible getaway destination from Dubai, and it’s not hard to see why. With exceptional dining, nightlife and a good variety of accommodation options, from heritage brands to boutique hotels, it’s a perennial crowd-pleaser. The Sursock Museum has reopened after sustaining considerable damage in the 2020 port explosion, and the Gemmayze and Mar Mikhael neighbourhoods are as energetic as they’ve ever been. Don’t miss Beit Kanz, a flower-filled cultural hub and restaurant in a restored historical landmark building that celebrates Lebanon’s creative community, craft heritage and culinary art.

Autumnal colours make for striking scenes in Bishkek's Oak Park

Autumnal colours make for striking scenes in Bishkek's Oak Park

5. Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

The Kyrgyz capital is a leafy, park-filled place flanked by snow-capped mountains and the easily accessible Ala-Archa Canyon for spectacular day hikes. Many visitors skip the city and head straight for Kyrgyzstan’s breathtaking interior landscapes, but there are many reasons to spend a few days here. Lunch next to the fountain at Frunze on the edge of Oak Park is a delight, with creative dishes built around local seasonal ingredients. The walking tours by Bishkek Walks are a great way to explore the city’s Soviet-era statues and neo-classical buildings, and you can pick up felt slippers, traditional Kalpak hats and watermelons sold out of car boots at the sprawling Osh Bazaar.

The Pyramids of Giza loom over Egypt's capital Cairo

The Pyramids of Giza loom over Egypt's capital, Cairo

6. Cairo, Egypt

The long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum is supposed to be opening this year after many delays. But even if it doesn’t, there are still plenty of reasons to head to the Egyptian capital. If you’ve already seen the Pyramids of Giza, head out to the extraordinary stepped pyramid at nearby Saqqara and the Bent Pyramid at Dahshur. Many visitors to Cairo look at the Nile rather than getting out on it, but you can hop on a water taxi (and avoid Cairo’s notorious traffic) to see the city from the water, or even SUP on the river.

Lac Abbe Djibouti

The otherworldly limestone chimneys of Lac Abbé, Djibouti

7. Djibouti

Djibouti’s scenery is dazzling, ranging from the otherworldly limestone chimneys of Lac Abbé, a body of water that bubbles with sulphurous hot springs and plumes of steam, to the salt-encrusted Lac Assal, the lowest place on the African continent. There are also volcanic landscapes, deserts, mountains and a tiny forest filled with surprising biodiversity, all squeezed into this tiny country. But as alluring as the inland sights are, don’t miss diving into the sea off Djibouti, one of the best places in the world to swim with whale sharks. For the best chances of a sighting, visit between November and January. The Djibouti Palace Kempinski is a reliable hotel choice in the capital, and can arrange tours and activities around the country.

The futuristic skyline of Doha Qatar

The futuristic skyline of Doha, Qatar

8. Doha, Qatar

For an art-filled break, hop on the one-hour flight to Doha . The Qatari capital’s museums are famed for showcasing exhibitions by big-name global artists such as Jeff Koons and Yayoi Kusama, but the city’s collection of public art is equally interesting as what’s kept indoors. Stay at The Ned, housed in the beautifully brutalist former Ministry of Interior building, and you’ll have access to the hotel’s own art collection showcasing the works of Qatari artists. If you’re hungry for more, rent a car and head out into the desert to track down two of the most exciting works of all - Richard Serra’s East-West/West-East monolithic 14-metre-high steel plates, and the mirrored rings that make up Olafur Eliasson’s Shadows Travelling on the Sea of the Day.

The stunning Hawa Mahal Palace in Jaipur

The stunning Hawa Mahal Palace in Jaipur

9. Jaipur, India

The capital of Rajasthan is a dizzying place with an irresistible spirit that pulls you in and spins you around. It’s a riot of bustling markets, dazzling colours and exquisite architecture, including the famous facade of Hawa Mahal ‘Palace of the Winds’, the colourful peacock doors of the City Palace, and the honey-hued Amber Fort, a 30-minute drive outside the city. Jaipur is also home to some spectacular hotels , like the Rajmahal Palace and the Villa Palladio, which embraces maximalism at its Instagrammable best. For something a little more understated right in the heart of the Lal Haveli jeweller’s bazaar, head to The Johri, a restored 19 th century home with calming interiors and an excellent restaurant. The truffle cheese kulcha and the chaat selections will have you planning your next trip before you’ve even finished dinner.

New Chorniche Jeddah

Jeddah's quaint Corniche

10. Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Jeddah is different. So says the city’s motto, and it’s true. Long the gateway to Makkah for pilgrims arriving by sea, Jeddah has a cosmopolitan population whose different cultural backgrounds are reflected in the fantastic food that’s waiting to be discovered here, from ma’soub to murtabak to foul . A major restoration programme is underway in Al Balad, Jeddah’s UNESCO World Heritage certified historical district, with new life being breathed into handsome centuries-old homes. It’s a beautiful place to wander, and you’ll soon be able to stay there, too – a new hotel, spread across three of the buildings, is set to open before the end of the year.

Aerial view of palm trees at beach at Dhidhdhoo Maldives

The Maldives is a four-hour flight from Dubai

11. Maldives

A direct flight from Dubai to Male is just over four hours and for a long weekend, the Maldives resorts located within a speedboat ride of the airport are the easiest options to make the most of your time. If travelling with friends, One&Only Reethi Rah’s Grand Beach Villa sleeps up to six and has its own pool right on the beach. The dhoni-shaped overwater villas at Como Cocoa Island have long been a favourite of couples, and the extensive wellness facilities here offer holistic programming and healthy cuisine. Kurumba, only ten minutes from the airport, was a pioneer in Maldivian tourism when it opened in 1972, and is still going strong. A more affordable family-friendly resort, Kurumba places a focus on connecting guests with local communities through music, entertainment and traditional experiences.

Mumbai's colourful Sassoon Docks

Mumbai's colourful Sassoon Docks

12. Mumbai, India

Crowded, noisy and occasionally overwhelming, Mumbai is one of India’s most exciting cities, filled with an intoxicating energy. This is a city to dive straight into, from its flower markets to the sights and smells of the Sassoon Docks, excellent street food, restaurants and buzzing late-night bars. It’s also a place to plan some serious shopping. Head to the Tarun Tahiliani and Sabyasachi stores for elegant – and extravagant – designer Indian attire, to Good Earth for lovely homeware, or dive into Mangaldas Market for a kaleidoscopic selection of fabrics, from silks to sarees to printed cotton. At the end of the day, rest your head in pure luxury at the iconic Taj Mahal Palace, or surrounded by retro charm at Abode Bombay.

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat

13. Muscat, Oman

A short hop by plane over the Hajar Mountains or an easy road trip from Dubai, the Omani capital is an ideal target for a long weekend. With resorts scattered along the coastline, including the new Jumeirah and the long-time favourite Chedi, it's not short of comfortable places to stay. While it's easy to spend the whole time in cosseted luxury, venture out and there’s plenty to do in and around the city, from the unmissable Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque to the frankincense-laden stalls of Mutrah souq. Muscat is also the gateway to mountaintop Jabal Akhdar for cooler summer climes.

Samarkand's Ulugh Beg Madrasa is one of the city's biggest draws

Samarkand's Ulugh Beg Madrasa is one of the city's biggest draws

14. Samarkand, Uzbekistan

Samarkand is as marvellous as its name suggests. This Uzbekistan city on the Silk Road is home to mosaic-covered madrassas, mausoleums and mosques. The detail is dazzling, particularly when set against Samarkand’s clear blue autumn skies. Samarkand’s big draw is the spectacular Registan, a square flanked by three centuries-old madrassas. Timur’s mausoleum, the Gur-e-Amir, is another must visit, but don’t miss hidden gem Aksaray Mausoleum just behind it for beautiful interiors that shimmer in gold and turquoise. Shopping here is also a treat, from silk ikats woven in the Fergana Valley to suzani fabrics, piles of nuts and dried fruits, and huge wheels of bread. Stay at the Bibikhanum Hotel, right next to the turquoise dome of the 15 th century Bibi-Khanym Mosque, to be in the centre of everything.

Georgia's picturesque capital Tbilisi

Georgia's picturesque capital, Tbilisi

15. Tbilisi, Georgia

Tbilisi is a real crowd-pleaser, compact enough to explore by foot and varied enough to ensure you discover something new around every corner. Many come here for the food alone, from gooey, cheesy khachapuri to steaming khinkali dumplings and pkhali puréed vegetables, rich with flavours of garlic, crushed walnuts and pomegranate seeds. The Dry Bridge flea market is the place to pick up antique crystal glasses, tea sets and Soviet-era memorabilia, and fans of brutalist architecture will have plenty to photograph as they wander the streets. Go straight to the source at Stamba, a book-filled, stylishly modernist hotel in a former printing house, where staff uniforms look straight out of The Grand Budapest Hotel , and Tbilisi’s bold and beautiful gather to drink coffee in the garden.

It’s easy to get carried away with the abundance of choices, but having a budget in mind will help you make conscious purchasing decisions and prevent any post-shopping regrets.
  • Explore Local Markets and Souks: While Dubai is known for its glamorous shopping malls, don’t miss out on the unique experience of exploring local markets and souks. Places like the Gold Souk, Spice Souk, and Textile Souk offer a vibrant atmosphere and a chance to discover authentic local products, handcrafted items, and traditional treasures. Bargaining is also common in these markets, so embrace the spirit of negotiation to get the best deals.
  • Embrace the Tax-Free Shopping Advantage: One of the perks of shopping in Dubai is the tax-free shopping experience. As a visitor, you can enjoy tax exemptions on your purchases, saving you a significant amount of money. Keep your passport handy, as you may need it to claim your tax refund at the airport or designated tax refund centers.
  • Verify Authenticity and Check Return Policies: When purchasing luxury or branded items, it’s essential to verify the authenticity of the products. Stick to reputable stores and authorized retailers to ensure that you’re getting genuine products. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the return policies of the stores you visit, as it’s always good to have a clear understanding of the store’s refund or exchange process in case you encounter any issues.
  • Stay Hydrated and Dress Comfortably: Shopping in Dubai can be a physically demanding activity, especially during peak seasons when the malls can get crowded. Stay hydrated by carrying a water bottle with you, as it’s important to keep yourself refreshed and energized throughout the day. Dress comfortably in lightweight, breathable fabrics and wear comfortable shoes to navigate the malls and markets with ease.
  • Take Advantage of Personal Shopping Services: Many shopping malls in Dubai offer personal shopping services, where experienced stylists can assist you in curating your wardrobe or finding the perfect outfit for a special occasion. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of these services to receive personalized advice, styling tips, and a more tailored shopping experience.
  • Embrace the Culture and Enjoy the Experience: Lastly, embrace the cultural diversity of Dubai and enjoy the unique shopping experience it offers. Immerse yourself in the bustling atmosphere, interact with friendly locals, and savor the flavors of traditional cuisine at a good restaurant during your shopping breaks. Shopping in Dubai is not just about buying products; it’s about immersing yourself in the vibrant culture of the city.

By following these tips, you can enhance your shopping experience in Dubai and make the most out of your retail adventures. From planning ahead and exploring local markets to embracing the culture and staying comfortable, these tips will ensure that your shopping journey in Dubai is enjoyable, fulfilling, and unforgettable.

What to Wear in Dubai: Dubai Packing List for Women

For me, packing is the worst part of travel. Especially as a solo female traveller who wants to be respectful but also look and feel good as I explore and, of course, take photos. Some destinations are harder to pack for than others and I struggled when trying to figure out what to wear in Dubai, UAE. After all, social media feeds show that anything goes but when talking to friends who actually live and work there, that’s not quite the case. Sure, you can get away with booty shorts and a bikini top at a beach club but that’s not really appropriate to walk around the streets in. After all, Dubai is a Muslim city in an Arabic nation.

I spent five days in Dubai and, after some helpful advice from my friend Liam and his wife Naomi who live in Dubai, I was pretty happy with my choices. I did my best to balance staying respectfully covered while choosing clothing that would help keep me cool and comfortable. Of course, with it being Dubai, I also tried my best to choose outfits that looked a little nicer and more dressed up for some days. So, for any other women out there wondering what to wear in Dubai, here are my tips and suggestions to help you figure out your Dubai packing list.

What is the Weather like in Dubai?

First off, we need to talk about the weather in Dubai. Dubai is HOT. Even during the so-called winter months temperatures in Dubai are similar to summer temperatures in parts of North America. I visited in late November/early December and every day was above 25C with a of couple days hitting 30C. While that is definitely cooler for the locals who experience temperatures closer to 50C in the summer, as a tourist, you will no doubt find it warm.

With that in mind think about lightweight clothing with quick-dry fabrics or flowy materials that allow some airflow. Evenings can be a bit cooler though so bring light jacket, cardigan, or sweater that you can layer over your other clothing if needed.

Is There a Dubai Dress Code?

ladies trip from dubai

One of the biggest questions about what to wear in Dubai is; does Dubai have a dress code? Overall? No. You can technically wear whatever you want in the streets of Dubai. So yes, if you really want, you can pull on a pair of booty shorts and bikini top to walk around downtown Dubai without worry of being arrested. However, as safe as Dubai is, you will still get a lot of looks and perhaps some comments and you might be denied entry. It’s not necessarily that you can’t wear certain things, but more that you shouldn’t. I firmly believe that being respectful of the local culture is one of the most important parts of being a tourist and a big part of that means dressing appropriately.

Now, that doesn’t mean that you need to cover your hair or wear a burqa or abaya like the local women. Nobody expects you to do that. But please avoid mini skirts/dresses/shorts, something the reveals too much cleavage, crop tops, see-through items or anything with rude/sexual slogans. Modesty is the local norm here so it is not the time or place for these types of outfits.

While there isn’t a general dress code for visiting Dubai you will find dress codes in some important cultural and religious spaces (such as mosques) as well as at restaurants and nightclubs. I’ll talk more about that in the sections below.

What to Wear in Dubai for City Exploring

ladies trip from dubai

So, what can you wear out exploring Dubai? Pretty much whatever you want as long as it works with the guidelines above.

If you plan on spending some time at the shopping malls, then be mindful of the air conditioning because they blast it inside. On days when I was exploring indoor things I chose to wear jeans (skinny jeans) and a t-shirt so I didn’t get too cold. Depending on how cold you get, you might even want to bring a light sweater with you.

When I was exploring outside I chose outfits that were lighter and could keep me cooler in the heat. Think looser pants, a sundress or skirt, or even a jumpsuit. I chose dresses (knee length or maxi skirt length) and a jumpsuit for my city exploring adventures. My jumpsuit is one of my favourite outfits because it’s so airy and comfortable. However, while the pants had a wide leg the top does have a lower neckline and it is sleeveless. It was ok while at some touristic sites, such as the Miracle Gardens, but I did bring a light wrap with me to cover up when I went into Old Dubai to explore. A usual with hot places, materials like linen and cotton will be the most comfortable.

If you are looking for a light cover-up perfect for travel, I highly recommend the butterfly wrap (pictured above) and mariposa kaftan from Diane Kroe. These lightweight pieces are also convertible and are perfect for covering up in the city or over a swimsuit at the pool and beach. If you decide to order anything from Diane Kroe make sure to use the promo code HANNAH10 for 10% off your total purchase!

What to Wear in Dubai for Brunches, Bars, and Nightlife

ladies trip from dubai

If you are planning a famous boozy Friday brunch or night out in Dubai then you are going to want to dress up. In fact, it’s more like you have to dress up because many places in Dubai do have dress codes and if you don’t cut it then the bouncer is not going to let you in.

Of course, dressing up can mean a lot of things for different people. Going to a club doesn’t mean that you have to wear a tight sparkly dress (although, you definitely can). However, you can also wear a nice pair of pants and an elegant top if that’s more your style. The key to going out to any of the big clubs in Dubai is, for women, the shoes. Most upscale bars and clubs want to see women wearing high heels so keep that in mind.

As for restaurants and hotels where brunches are served, you can be more casual chic. Again, be mindful of keeping covered (you don’t want to turn someone more conservative off their food) and again, watch the footwear. You don’t need heels for brunch but don’t expect to get in barefoot or with a cheap pair of flipflops either.

Moral of the story: pack nice shoes and sandals for Dubai.

What to Wear in Dubai for a Beach or Pool Day

When it comes to going to the pool or beach in Dubai you have three options. The first is to use the pool or beach access at your hotel (assuming your hotel offers either). The second is to go to one of the beach or pool clubs, of which there are many. Finally, you can visit one of the public beaches.

Of course, at the beach and pool, you want to wear a swimsuit. I have read a couple of articles that suggested you wear more conservative swimsuits at the public beaches, however, I went to a public beach and didn’t notice this at all. I saw everything from burkinis to string thong bikinis and everything in-between. I wore a bikini to the public beach as well and didn’t have any issues or notice any weird behaviour. Again though, while wearing a bikini or swimwear on the beach is fine, I suggest you do cover up while getting to/from the beach. In this case I wore shorts and a t-shirt since I just went from my hotel to an uber direct to the beach.

If you want to go to one of Dubai’s beach clubs, then you will need to up your beach outfit game. They want ‘beach chic’ so opt for cute cover-ups and sundresses rather than shorts and t-shirt type combo. Also, this is the place to bring out your cute or sexy swimsuits rather than a sporty one.

Remember, in Dubai, beachwear is only for the beach/pool.

What to Wear in Dubai for Day Trips

ladies trip from dubai

If you are doing a day trip from Dubai chances are you are either headed to the desert or Abu Dhabi for a day.

While I did not go to the desert in Dubai, I have been to the desert in Morocco, Jordan, Egypt, and Israel which are all pretty similar. For Dubai desert safari experiences you will definitely want closed toe shoes (like running shoes). Climbing sand dunes is tricky though without trying to it in flip-flops and, unsurprisingly, the sand will get everywhere so even walking sandals can be a pain if the sand gets between the straps and rubs against your skin. PS: for travel running shoes I recommend Vessi. They are lightweight, comfortable, and waterproof!

I also recommend long trousers or pants over shorts and, if you choose to wear a t-shirt or sleeveless top, bring a long scarf or wrap just in case. The sun in the desert can be crazy strong and you will burn really easily (so pack the sunscreen too!).

As for a day trip to Abu Dhabi ( I did this one ), again think similar to what you would wear while exploring Dubai. If you are visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (which you absolutely should!) then you do need to completely cover up. If you take a group tour from Dubai like I did, they provide you with a scarf for your hair and abaya for over your outfit. However, if you choose, you can wear your own clothing as long as everything (and I do mean everything) is covered. If you like, you can buy your own abaya in Dubai. There are some beautiful ones in bright colours sold at the souks in Old Dubai. Just make sure it is long enough to cover your ankles and feet!

My Must-Pack Items for Dubai

Hannah looking at the view of Dubai from the Burj Khalifa

Hopefully, the advice above has given you some ideas for what to pack for Dubai based on your current wardrobe. But, if you think you maybe need to do a bit of shopping beforehand here are a few of my must-pack items for Dubai.

  • Butterfly wrap or Mariposa wrap : I mentioned these Diane Kroe designs above and they are SO perfect for Dubai. Lightweight, classy, and perfect for covering up in the city or on the beach. Remember, if you buy anything from Diane Kroe, use promo code HANNAH10 for 10% off.
  • Maxi dresses: Dubai is perfect for long flowy dresses that can make you feel pretty and appropriate while also keeping you cool. I got one that I love from Amazon (with pockets!) I’m also a big fan of dresses from  City Chic.
  • Wide Leg pants: I have a pair of the pocket pants from Diane Kroe which I absolutely love. They feel a little dressier but are lightweight and pack so easily (plus they have pockets!) You can see them here (don’t forget promo code HANNAH10!) You can also fine some on amazon. This pair has really good reviews and comes in several colours.
  • The evolve top from encircled: This tshirt is my favourite travel tshirt. Yes, it’s pricey but I’ve had mine since 2016 and it’s still going strong! The reason I love it so much is because it’s multi-wear. I can have short or long sleeves and a high or lower neckline and all ways look flattering. I also wore this shirt in Morocco and Jordan. I think it’s the perfect comfortable t-shirt for a more conservative country. Check out encircled here.
  • Body Glide: My thighs touch. A lot. So if I’m somewhere hot and wearing dresses and swimsuits the risk of chub rub is very high. I swear by bodyglide to keep it at bay. (body glide can also be used to help avoid blisters from shoes too). Grab some body glide here.
  • Scarf: I always had a scarf in my bag in Dubai. Sometimes I had to use it to cover my shoulders/chest to get into more conservative places. Other times it just came in handy to wrap around me as an extra layer of warmth in the cold air conditioning. You can find some pretty ones here , or, shop when you get to souks in Dubai.
  • Insulated water bottle: Dubai is HOT and you will want to make sure you have water with you. I use an insulated water bottle when I travel because I love cold water and in Dubai, you can be any non-insulated bottles get really warm really fast. Mine is similar to this one and fits easily in a bag.
  • Quick dry towel if you are going to any of the free public beaches

Final Tips on What to Wear in Dubai

Packing for Dubai can be tricky in terms of being respectful but also looking nice. After all, Dubai has a reputation of being a luxury destination and many people here to dress to impress. However, that doesn’t mean that you need to have designer clothing. Classic pieces that you feel good in will go a long way and don’t forget to accessorize! Having some nice jewelry and accessories will go a long way in helping glam up any outfit. I went with earrings, necklace, bangle bracelets and ended up buying this gold belt from amazon to add a little something to a plain black dress I brought with me.

Worst case? If you arrive and feel like you are missing something, then you can always shop in Dubai. There’s certainly no shortage of malls!
