What travelers are saying

"I have travelled with ROW numerous times, including four trips on the Rogue River. Every trip has been wonderful and every person associated with ROW has been nice, knowledgeable, professional and fun. The Rogue is a great river and the trip is an excellent one for two people or a large group—and I have done both. I’ve taken both of my kids, one time each, and have organized groups of colleagues twice; most recently in 2019 when 14 of us gathered. The guides at ROW are great and help to make the trip very enjoyable. The scenery, lodging and the wonderful outdoors including warm air and refreshing water, make for a wonderful escape from the everyday routine. The fact that this trip offers beds and indoor plumbing is a nice benefit and allows those who have an aversion to camping a chance to see the wilderness. I have recommended ROW and the Rogue trip more times than I can count and my group has already reserved our trip for 2021. What are you waiting for?"

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

Education & Learning Tour Selection Trips

A learning vacation can be an enriching experience, allowing you to expand your knowledge while exploring new destinations. To make the most of your educational journey, consider these travel tips:

  • Research local customs and cultural etiquette before departure.
  • Pack light, focusing on essentials and any specific gear needed for your learning activities.
  • Stay flexible with your itinerary to allow for unexpected discoveries and opportunities.
  • Engage with locals and fellow travelers to enhance your understanding of the destination.
  • Take advantage of guided tours and expert-led sessions to deepen your learning.
  • Embrace the learning process with an open mind and willingness to try new things.
  • Capture memories through photos or journaling to reflect on your experiences later.

Additional details

What is an educational tour?

On an educational tour, the ultimate goal is to learn something new while traveling.

An educational tour can be age specific. For example, learning vacations and educational tours for adults are particularly popular. Some of the best providers of these kind of tours include Road Scholar (previously known as Elderhostel), a company known for its educational cruises and other easy and convenient trips, and  Smithsonian Journeys .

An educational tour can take many forms. Perhaps you want to learn more about ancient Incan society at Machu Picchu by hiking the Inca Trail , or you want to learn the history of what was formerly Yugoslavia by rail , or you want to walk the spice trails in Petra -- all of these trips could be (and are!) educational tours.

Service Learning Tours

Another sought after form of educational tour is a learning tour with a service component . Like the traditional educational tour, the intensity of the service and amount of service per trip can vary drastically. Service is a great way to give back to the community you’re visiting, and can help make a trip much more meaningful.

Some examples of service you could be doing while traveling include working at an elephant sanctuary in Thailand , helping run an ESL after school program in Costa Rica , or helping perform animal conservation research in South Africa .

How to Pick your Educational Tour

Size Once again, group sizes vary dramatically per tour and by company. Generally, large groups are a better price and boast group discounts. Smaller groups, while more expensive, usually offer a more thorough and personalized experience. If you are an independent person, you might even be interested in a self-guided tour -- whatever you’re leaning toward, however, Stride is your best resource to compare and contrast different tour providers and trip options. Check out our educational tour reviews to see what real people have actually experienced.

Interest One obvious distinction between tours, even in the same countries, is what topic the learning tour is focused on. For example, you could experience the south of Italy in a variety of ways. You could learn to wine-taste by visiting its rustic and beautiful vineyards, or maybe you want to get a fuller experience of the countryside by cycling through its small towns … or perhaps you’d rather stick with a more traditional vacation, with guaranteed stops at all of Italy’s most popular monuments and attractions.

Transportation  Deciding your means of transport is another important decision in picking your tour. Although a tour may be learning-focused, it might be a combination of other things -- for example, many educational tours are done on bicycle, or conducted from the comfort of a cruise ship . Walking tours are also another popular form for educational tours.

Travel + Leisure Readers' 5 Favorite Small-ship Ocean Cruise Lines of 2023

Readers shared why great things come in small (ship) packages in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023.

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .

How Voting Works

  • What Readers Loved
  • The Full List

This year, small ships seem to be hitting the mark. These vessels, which Travel + Leisure defines as those with 150 to 299 cabins, offer what many readers consider the perfect blend of choice and comfort, with plenty of onboard dining and activities without the at-times overwhelming selection found on much larger ships. In fact, small ships may be driving a surge of interest in cruising generally, as new and newly refreshed options in this range are drawing both longtime cruisers and those eager to try a new way of traveling.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

For the cruise category, respondents were asked to rate individual ships; the results were combined to generate scores for cruise lines in different categories based on number of cabins. The small-ship ocean cruise line category is only for ships with 150 to 299 cabins. Some cruise lines may appear in multiple categories depending on the makeup of their fleet.

Ships were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Cabins/facilities
  • Itineraries/destinations
  • Excursions/activities

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

What Readers Loved

In the 2023 voting, readers gave high marks to established brands that have reinvigorated their offerings. Consider No. 2 Windstar Cruises, which recently rebuilt three of its small ships at an investment of $250 million, adding more suites, improved culinary options, and enhanced spa facilities to each. “I'm never going to be able to get on another cruise line,” said one convert, who traveled on Star Legend .

Meanwhile Paul Gauguin Cruises (No. 3) may have slipped a bit from its 2022 ranking but still posted a score of more than 92 points. That’s thanks to its luxurious service — most rooms come with butler service — and, no doubt, its dreamy itineraries that visit remote atolls in South Pacific and the cruise line’s private beach on Bora Bora. “It's the only way to see this part of the world,” one voter shared.

This year’s small-ship leader, though, made its mark with two new vessels that are unlike anything else sailing today. Read on to see how Viking captured this category — and for more details on all the top lines.

Courtesy of Viking

Typically thought of as a midsize-ship line, Viking took top honors in this category, too, thanks to its twin ships Viking Polaris and Viking Octantis . The expedition vessels, both of which have 189 cabins, are built for out-there adventures, whether on the waters of the Great Lakes or in the Southern Ocean on the way to Antarctica. “I can't say enough about how wonderful our experience was on the Viking Octantis to Antarctica. The ship is stunning in every way,” one voter said. “The excursions were all well-planned and executed — and the science and educational sessions were excellent,” another added. While shorter trips aboard these ships are possible, Viking can also arrange for a “ longitudinal world cruise .” These multi-month journeys will take intrepid guests from Minnesota to Ushuaia, Argentina — or the other way around — in small-ship comfort, with port excursions and insightful lectures along the way.

12 Top Cruises on Small Ships

From wildlife viewing in the remote polar regions to magical sunsets in the Indian Ocean, these ships offer unforgettable voyages.

Even if you're sailing in chilly Antarctica, cruising on a small ship offers comfort and coziness.

If you are feeling a sense of wanderlust and ready to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations in far-flung corners of the world, consider booking a small ship cruise. These luxury mega-yachts, expedition-style vessels and sailing ships can visit tucked-away harbors, exotic locales and pristine beaches that larger ships can't reach. And if you opt for a cruise on a rigged sailing vessel, there's nothing more romantic than watching the sun set into the ocean while the wind fills the sails of a tall ship at sea.

Smaller ships offer an intimate onboard vibe where the experience is highly personalized with a higher crew to passenger ratio – and where you'll get to know many of your fellow passengers. Smaller ships are often more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly than traditional cruise ships, using either wind power or the latest technologies. With the addition of new or existing cruise lines entering this market along with other lines investing in upgrading older ships, there are many more vessels in these smaller ship classes to choose from when considering your cruise options.

If you're seeking an adventure of a lifetime – whether to meet the penguins in Antarctica, people- and yacht watch in glamorous ports of call in the Mediterranean, or go island hopping in paradise in Hawaii – then plan your voyage to set sail on one of these small ships.

(Note: Some of the following activities, attractions and locations may be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Star Clippers: Royal Clipper

Inspired by the legendary 1902 Preussen, the first five-masted ship, Royal Clipper was launched in 2000 as a true sailing vessel at 439 feet in length with 54,000 square feet of sails across 42 sails. With five fully rigged masts, the ship is recognized in Guinness World Records as the largest square rigger in service today.

Modeled after the historic clipper ships, Royal Clipper travels under full sail – and by wind power – for up to 80% of its voyages. When the vessel does navigate under power, the energy-efficient engines only use high-quality, low-sulfur gas oil, earning Star Clippers the International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate for all three of its clipper ships.

The ship can accommodate as many as 227 passengers in 114 staterooms, along with 106 crew. While on board, guests will enjoy 19,000 square feet of open teak deck, three swimming pools and hidden balconies on either side of the bow, where you can view wildlife like dolphins swimming alongside the ship. You can also relax in the bowsprit net overlooking the ocean and keeping an eye out for whales. For the more adventurous sailor, climbing the mast to 75 feet above the water affords unforgettable ocean views from your perch in one of the passenger crow's nests. Other features of Royal Clipper are its three-story atrium, trilevel dining room, and unique spa and health club with underwater portholes called the Captain Nemo Lounge.

The ship's seven-night Windward Islands itinerary sails round trip from Barbados with stops in Antigua , Martinique , St. Kitts, Îles Des Saintes and St. Lucia. You'll even have an opportunity to sail alongside one of the line's sister ships and another tall ship – Star Flyer – to the island of Dominica . Royal Clipper's longer itineraries include several Grand Voyages: The 19-night cruise from Cannes in France to Lisbon in Portugal, for example, calls on other ports in France, Italy, Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco.

Silversea Cruises: Silver Wind

Launched in 1995, Silver Wind was Silversea's second of four vessels that the line built for the ultra-luxury market. This ship underwent a significant upgrade in 2018, followed by another refurbishment in 2021 that included an enhanced ice-class hull. This new addition allows Silver Wind to be one of the most adaptable ships in the fleet, sailing from the polar regions like Antarctica to sunny island climates in the Caribbean and cruising picturesque shorelines along the Mediterranean Sea.

Silver Wind measures about 515 feet in length and has 149 all ocean-view suites, more than 80% of which boast a private veranda. The ship carries 274 guests and 239 crew and features elegant public rooms, including lounges for gazing out at the ocean or watching onboard entertainment. There's also an upscale bar, shipboard boutiques and a spa.

Dining is a highlight, with four venues spanning international cuisine such as Italian, regional specialties and seasonally inspired menus. For an evening under the stars, The Grill features fine steaks and seafood or vegetables that guests can cook at the table on 400 degrees Celsius lava stones. After dinner, spend time chatting with fellow passengers at Connoisseur's Corner, where you can sip cognac and enjoy a cigar.

Silver Wind offers an epic 20-night expedition cruise from Tromsø, Norway, to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, visiting various destinations in Iceland as well as remote regions and glaciers in Greenland. For a warmer voyage, the 10-night Puntarenas to Guayaquil itinerary takes you from Costa Rica to Ecuador in South America, with stops at the remote Darien Jungle in Panama, the Utría National Natural Park in Colombia and several ports in Ecuador, including the city of Guayaquil.

Sea Cloud Cruises: Sea Cloud

Exterior of Sea Cloud ship on the water.

Courtesy of Sea Cloud Cruises

Built in 1931 as a private yacht for Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton and his wife Marjorie Merriweather Post, an American socialite and philanthropist, this legendary windjammer maintains the elegance of a time gone by.

Originally named Hussar, the 360-foot Sea Cloud has a fascinating history – while the ship started as a private yacht, it later became a floating palace of diplomacy and then a warship. Today, Sea Cloud accommodates up to 64 passengers in 32 outside cabins and carries about 60 crew. The ship also boasts 29 sails, with the height of the main mast towering 184 feet above the water.

If you've never been on this type of vessel, cruising under full sail on a tall ship is unlike any other experience. Sea Cloud does not rely on motors (though they are installed just in case), allowing the wind and sea to determine the ship's course whenever possible, guided by the skills and seamanship of the crew for navigation. This setup provides an opportunity to teach the art of sailing to the passengers. The captain of Sea Cloud and guests prefer to cruise under full sail, which is the lure of sailing on a windjammer. Life on board the ship is intimate and relaxed – just as you would find on a private yacht.

Amenities on Sea Cloud include a lido bar and deck and a restaurant serving cuisine inspired by the destination, which features local products, fresh fish and regional wines.

One of Sea Cloud's top itineraries, Between Lifestyles and Nature's Paradises, sails for seven nights from Monte Carlo, Monaco , to the Spanish island of Palma de Mallorca , with calls on less visited ports along the Mediterranean coast in southern France like La Ciotat and Collioure. You can also join the jet-setters in St. Barts with a front-row seat from your sailing ship for the Bucket Regatta. This 10-night adventure includes two days in the French West Indies island of St. Barts and other picturesque ports of call in the Caribbean.

Atlas Ocean Voyages: World Navigator

Atlas Ocean Voyages' first luxury expedition ship, World Navigator, launched in August 2021. With a length of 423 feet and capacity for 196 passengers and 127 crew, the ship sails to fascinating destinations around the world. By optimizing fuel efficiency with the incorporation of the latest hybrid power management and propulsion system, World Navigator uses as little as one-fifth of the fuel of standard cruise ship systems. The quiet alternate hydro-jet propulsion system allows for up-close viewing of marine animals and other wildlife.

The 98 beautifully appointed staterooms and suites feature upscale amenities like Egyptian linens and a menu to personalize your selection of a pillow. Some accommodations also have Juliet-style or walk-out balconies, and certain suites come with butler service. For dining options, you'll find Portuguese-inspired Porto, which is the main dining room, or the New York-style 7-Aft Grill for steaks and seafood. Windstar Cruises: Wind Star

When it first launched in Le Havre, France, in November 1985, Wind Star was the world's largest sailing vessel and the flagship for the line. While this schooner may not be the largest tall ship on the seas today, Wind Star is an elegant four-masted sailing yacht and the cruise line's namesake. Since its launch, this ship has been through a few renovations, with the most recent one in 2018. The 360-foot vessel features 73 deluxe ocean-view staterooms that accommodate 148 passengers, and it can carry 101 crew. Four masts stand at 204 feet tall, and six triangular Dacron sails, which are self-furling and computerized, make up a surface area of 21,500 square feet.

As with other Windstar vessels, you'll find the same casual elegance on board this sailing ship. Guests will get to sail away to the music Windstar traditionally plays while raising the flag during every port departure – Vangelis' song "1492: Conquest of Paradise," which is the musical score to the movie of the same name. The culinary program on Windstar's fleet is in partnership with the James Beard Foundation, so dining is a real treat. The three restaurant venues on Wind Star include Amphora, whose contemporary, international menu was created by James Beard-affiliated chefs. The romantic Candles offers an alfresco dining experience with grilled steaks and skewers, while the Veranda is the ship's casual breakfast and lunch buffet with outdoor seating.

Other onboard amenities include a lounge, the Yacht Club Café, a pool bar, a salon and spa, a boutique, a library, a fitness center, a water sports platform and an open bridge where you can enjoy a chat over coffee with the captain.

Treasures of the Greek Isles is a seven-night voyage that sails round trip from Athens to several Greek islands, including Mykonos and Santorini . This itinerary also includes a stop in Kusadasi, Turkey, where you'll be able to visit the fascinating ancient city of Ephesus. For a South America adventure to transit the Panama Canal and explore destinations in the region like rainforests, reserve the seven-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal voyage.

In addition to many opportunities to see those amazing animals, you'll also encounter walruses, reindeer, arctic foxes and fur seals. Another incredible journey for the extreme adventurer is the 35-day Epic Antarctica sailing. This expedition will venture to remote West Antarctica and explore the sub-Antarctic islands of New Zealand and Australia, traveling to destinations where possibly few – or even no – humans have set foot before.

The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes sailing cruises to four islands, including stops in Molokai, Lanai , Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii . There are two itineraries in Alaska. The seven-night Alaska Glacier Cruise itinerary sails one way from Juneau to Sitka through the northern passages. Ponant: Le Commandant Charcot

Ponant's first high polar expedition vessel, Le Commandant Charcot, launched in September 2021. Le Commandant Charcot is also the first luxury hybrid electric polar exploration vessel.

All of the 123 staterooms and suites have a private balcony or terrace. The atmosphere for the 245 passengers on board is much like that of a private yacht, given an extraordinary ratio of passengers to crew with 215 crew members. Two culinary options, gastronomic restaurant Nuna and casual dining concept Sila, are part of a collaboration with Ducasse Conseil and Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse; the menus are designed by the renowned French chef. Guests can enjoy complimentary French wine, Veuve Clicquot Champagne and Ladurée macarons throughout their voyage.

You'll also find beautiful public spaces, a boutique, a theater, expedition rooms and a promenade deck where you can access the bow. The 15-night Geographic North Pole expedition sailing from Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, in Norway pushes the limit of sailing to the northernmost point in the world. Le Commandant Charcot is the only passenger ship able to reach the geographic North Pole.

Small Ships: Intimate Luxury

Embark on a journey of unparalleled intimacy and luxury with our small ships cruises, designed to cater to travelers in search of a truly personalized voyage.

These unique vessels redefine the art of cruising by focusing on close-knit ambiance and impeccable service.

Unlike large, bustling cruise liners or other ship types , small ships accommodate a limited number of guests. This ensures an atmosphere of exclusivity. Passengers often tell us these trips help them forge genuine connections with fellow travelers. For others, it’s a place where solitude and personal journeys are encouraged and respected.

Whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple seeking a romantic getaway, or a group of friends, the small ship experience promises an authentic and engaging adventure.

Attention to Detail

One of the defining features of small ship cruises is the attention to detail in the cabins and public spaces. Cabins are thoughtfully designed to provide both comfort and elegance, offering a retreat that complements the breathtaking views outside. Many small ships feature public areas that exude an upscale yet cozy atmosphere, creating an environment that encourages mingling and relaxation.

Small ship cruises cater to a diverse range of preferences. While some vessels pamper guests with gourmet dining experiences featuring locally inspired cuisine, others embrace a more rustic simplicity, appealing to travelers who relish a minimalistic approach to cruising. This variety ensures that every traveler finds a small ship cruise that aligns with their preferences and expectations.

Exploration and Education

One of the highlights of small ship cruising is the opportunity for cultural exploration. As you glide along picturesque waterways, you’ll have ample time to soak in the local culture, history, and scenery. Engaging onboard lectures by experts provide enriching insights into the destinations you visit, enhancing your understanding of the regions you traverse.

Imagine savoring a gourmet meal as you pass quaint villages and historic landmarks, or listening to captivating stories from onboard experts who share their knowledge about the cultures that have thrived along these waterways for centuries. The intimate size of the ship allows you to truly immerse yourself in the experience, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or a blend of both, small-ship cruises offer an exceptional and customized way to explore the world’s most beautiful waterways.

As you indulge in luxurious comfort, engage in meaningful interactions, and discover hidden gems along the route, you’ll come to appreciate the magic of small ship cruising — an experience in which each moment feels tailored just for you.

Why Travel by Small Ship

We all know the power of travel, that is why we are frequently sharing, planning or reminiscing about a travel adventure. But often we forget the nitty-gritty logistics that can steal from our desired experiences of meeting new people and visiting new places. Here at AdventureSmith Explorations, we have done our homework enough to know there’s an easier way. How? Travel by small cruise ship .

The variety of experiences offered by a small ship cruise leaves us fulfilled, relaxed, satisfied and ready for the next trip. These transformational travel experiences emerge from not only the water below—with the ability to travel alongside the likes of dolphins and whales—but also above deck with like-minded travelers and incredible guides. Read on for our top reasons on why to travel by small ship.

Bow of small ship in front of beach in Croatia.

Unpack One Time

One of the biggest hassles of traveling is the constant unpacking, repacking and searching to find that one item that you need in a darkened piece of luggage. Imagine only unpacking one time into nice compartments in a built-in dresser in your cabin. Only having to do this once, you now can read your book, learn about the local culture or look for wildlife off the bow. An additional advantage: you don’t even have to carry your luggage on board; it’s placed in your cabin when you embark.

Logistics-Free Adventure

Travel is full of decisions: what should we do next? Where should we go next? Eat? Stay? And if you’re in a big group, forget it. Two thirds of travel can be taken up deciding and searching. What if instead of this back-and-forth your captain sailed you to all the best spots, with the best food, and the biggest decision you must make is over a croissant or bagel for breakfast. For big groups and the indecisive, ship travel can be an adventure saver.

Relaxing Transportation

You may think this is an oxymoron, as travel usually includes stressful train stations, taxis, car rides and/or buses but relaxing transportation does exist! On a ship, you get to kick up your feet, read, sleep, grab a drink or even in some cases ease into the spa while puttering onward to a new epic location.

Meals Are Catered, Authentic & Varied

The incredible chefs aboard small ships know how important food is to guests, and the small number of passengers means the chefs can source local, fresh and high quality ingredients. Think fresh fish from  Alaska  or uniquely prepared Ecuadorian  locro de papa soup in the  Galapagos Islands .

No Money, No Worries

Even if you’re not on an all-inclusive ship, charges are always settled at the end of the voyage, creating a worry-free atmosphere where you never need your wallet or tips at the ready. On select vessels, tips are even included.

Extraordinary Experiences

Small ships allow ordinary travelers to have extraordinary experiences. The logistics of kayaking in front of a glacier, snorkeling with sea lions or riding a small craft among whales can be challenging, if not impossible for day-trippers who have less time to explore a place. Ship travel makes these experiences safe and accessible, with a glass of wine and a hot shower to boot.

Unique Vantage

Looking at shorelines from the outside in offers a unique view of a place. It makes you feel like you are a part of the wilderness, linking you to the landscape. Plus, many of us spend most of our time on land, yet so many of us are drawn to water. Traveling by small ship can offer a variance to our daily life by giving us the experience of living on water.

Avoid the Crowds & Access Hard-to-Reach Places

No one likes to travel in an overcrowded location, but we often do it because the place is just that cool (ahem Taj Mahal). Fortunately, there are so many unbelievable places in the world the crowds just can’t get to—and many are only accessed by water. Ship travel makes these expeditions possible, and the only likely heavy population you will see will be the massive penguin colonies in  Antarctica  or the other-worldly marine iguanas of the  Galapagos .

Get Up Close Worry-Free

Aboard a ship, you can get close to things like glaciers, whales and wildlife while being safe and contained. This is great, especially for families. You are no longer in charge of worrying about packing lifejackets or what’s around the bend in the trail. On a small ship you are in the hands of experienced experts who know the location in depth. This doesn’t mean you should stop using common sense, but the general anxiety around travel can be lifted. Parents, you can rest a bit more easily.

Active Travel

You may think that traveling by ship would mean a lot of lounging. While that does happen, travel by small ship can offer all sorts of interesting dynamic activities. Canoe up an  Amazonian  tributary, swim through a cave to a special swimming hole in  Indonesia , kayak near an  Alaskan  glacier or snowshoe to a penguin colony in  Antarctica .

Variety of Activity

Not only is there a variety of activities, but also the activities are tailored for varying levels of movement. Short hikes, skiff rides and beach walks are available for the less mobile, or those who just want a relaxing day. More challenging options, such as lengthy guided kayak tours or ridgeline hikes, cater to the more active passengers, or those who need to burn off the breakfast bacon. This creates an excellent opportunity for families of different generations, movement capabilities and interests to enjoy their vacation together.

Educational Travel

Aboard a small ship where guides are near-constant companions, your experiences are continually being enhanced with education. The question ventures from where do I find an excellent guide to what kind of guide experience do I want to have? The 18-guest  Tucano  cruising in the Brazilian Amazon hires guides for their authenticity, skills and knowledge from growing up in the rainforest, whereas National Geographic ships offer highly educated, highly trained naturalists boasting specialization in certain fields. No matter what you choose you will walk away more informed, energized and excited to share your knowledge with everyone back home.

Sunrises & Sunsets

No matter where you go when you are traveling by ship you are not just viewing but are also  within  every sunrise and sunset as it reflects upon the water around you. Just imagine the long five-hour sunsets and sunrises that can be experienced at the tips of the earth in  Antarctica  and the  Arctic .

Connect with Shipmates

Ship travel offers unique opportunities to meet like-minded people. People that don’t like to whale-watch, hike and kayak are not going to be on your small ship cruise to Alaska; they might be on the bigger ships but not on your adventure cruise. Due to the size and intimate nature of small ships, it is easy to find opportunities to meet compatible friends. Who knows, on your next small ship cruise you may even meet your new favorite travel buddy, even your soul mate.

Go Where Everyone (will soon) Know Your Name

We all love when the barista remembers our coffee order, and this can actually happen on a small ship as well. When traveling with the same people over a period of time, time is spent getting to know the crew and vice versa. A personal experience is created every time the restaurant staff greets you by name and knows your dietary needs or when the bartender has your preferred wine ready to pour.

The Guides Are Your New Best Friends

The friendships you form with guides aboard a small ship is amazing. It’s like a summer camp for adults, as one of our travelers put it. Your guides are on board taking in the sites with you, often eating at your table and of course out on every excursion, which means endless learning and many new friends made. This camaraderie can have a more bespoke feel on a ship like the 40-guest  Aqua Mekong  with celebrity chef and naturalist guest hosts on select departures, or can be really camplike with the fun, adventurous group of guides you often meet on expedition vessels in  Antarctica  and  Alaska .

Digital Detox

None-to-little WiFi can give us a much-needed screen break. Technology has permeated so many aspects of our life that taking a break can be a healthy opportunity. Small ship travel is often to remote places, so while some ships offer WiFi, many vessels have none at all, including no cell service. At sea, you can truly reconnect with your natural surroundings. Less looking down at status updates and selfies equals more time for spotting whales, dolphins and unusual birds.

The idea of cruising may not appeal to you if all you think is that they hit the same ports which have the same jewelry and t-shirt shops, and are herded onto buses like cattle to experience the same excursions. You want a more intimate, authentic experience that explores a multi-city destination or region.  There is nothing worse than the hassle of having to pack up and change hotels over and over, especially with kids.

That is why I LOVE small ship cruises. Most small ships sleep less than a few hundred people (compared to the Mega-Cruises that can sleep up to 5,000), can visit smaller ports, and provide more intimate excursions.

Here are some of my favorite small ship cruise lines for families.

small ship educational cruises

Uncruise is named because it is un like large ship cruises in every way. Like other small ship cruise companies, they are all about getting you off the ship, exploring the destinations en route. A family-friendly UnCruise adventure is a unique way to experience Alaska, Central America, Baja, Pacific Northwest, or the Hawaiian Islands. The cruise line’s small ships only travel with 86 passengers and provide a much more intimate experience of Alaskan wilderness than the big ships operated by larger cruise lines. They provide experiences that focus on getting up close with nature.

Linbald Expeditions

If you have kids who love nature and exploration then you may want to consider Linbald Expeditions. Linbald has partnered with National Geographic to create unique programs for kids. They have onboard naturalists who are specially trained as National Geographic field educators. They optimize daily “In the Field” activities to prompt kids to watch out for a particular item, like a creature with scales or a giant coral head on land, then record their observations in their Field Notebook. Kids also take part in a variety of fun activities: snorkeling with sea lions in Galápagos and Baja, identifying whale flukes in Alaska, or kayaking with penguins in Antarctica.

Crystal Cruises

If expedition-type travel is not really your thing, you may want to consider Crystal Cruises. They are a little larger with about 900 guests but they are the only small ship, luxury cruise line with dedicated kids spaces. Now you aren’t going to find the breadth of activities a mega-ship provides but they have a kid’s area that boasts art supplies, board games, building blocks, dedicated spaces with plush seating for reading or watching movies. Each dining venue offers menu options for kids, while in-room babysitting services are also available upon request for young ones. But I really love their destination-inspired activities:

Scavenger hunts that focus on the highlights of the itinerary. Search for “artifacts” in Rome, wildlife in Alaska, or “royalty” in the British Isles.

Cookie baking, pizza making, and other culinary creativity in the galley.

Arts & crafts of all kinds, for all ages, also often focused on the destinations visited on each cruise. Kids can learn about the world while they create their own masterpieces.

River Cruising

My absolute favorite way to travel is river cruising. So many of the great cities of the world were built up on waterways (or the highways of the time.) There are some incredible itineraries built to ensure that the whole family has a wonderful time, from kids to parents and even grandparents. I love how they build in ways for adults to experience the culture of a destination while kids have an educational but engaging and fun adventure.

European Waterway

An alternative to the larger (200 people) river cruise is luxury barges. European Waterways cater for groups between six and twelve, with the option of booking out an entire barge for your exclusive use. Gently traverse some of Europe’s most idyllic waterways with a chef and crew on hand to make sure you’re always well looked after. The barge moves at a walking pace, so it’s easy to step ashore at the locks. Whether you opt to head out into the countryside on a bicycle, explore the local vineyards and châteaux or simply relax on board, this marvelous option is perfect for those who want dedicated family time.

Private Charter

A lot of smaller ships typically have a minimum age requirement. With a private charter, you are able to choose your ship, itinerary, and activities. You have so much added flexibility and the cost is not as prohibitive as you may think. I met with some amazing charter companies in Croatia that have 5-7 day private charters available for as little as $1000 per person, very comparable to a cruise fare on a mega-ship.

What can i see on an antarctica cruise.

Antarctica Cruise

Antarctica is home a diverse array of wildlife that we encounter on our voyages. There are 18 species of penguin which is the most common bird in Antarctica. The rich seas around Antarctica are home to Orcas, whales, elephant seals and leopard seals which are often sighted on our Antarctica cruises.

Antarctica photo tour

A great sight is the countless icebergs you will see from the ship. The icebergs in Antartica calve off the surrounding glaciers and form these magnificent ice sculptures in the sea. If you look closely you will see penguins or seals taking a rest on an iceberg.

Antarctica glacier

Glaciers are one of the most magnificent sites on a cruise in Antarctica. Witness ice calving off the glacier face and forming fresh icebergs right in front of you. You will see countless glaciers on your Antarctica expedition from the ship and during Zodiac cruises.

Antarctica wildlife holiday

Antarctica is home to some of the most magical landscapes on earth. Imagine cruising past icy mountains and then going ashore by Zodiac to witness the true polar wilderness. On our voyages we spend the maximum amount of time ashore exploring.

‘The luxury of being alone in nature and getting close to animals is worth it.  This trip is also great for slowing down and reconnecting with the wild.  Smaller groups meant no waiting to go ashore. We anchored and the landing craft was ready to go. It is a much more adventurous feeling on a small ship and you are really immersed in nature.’

Antarctica Cruises FAQ

The cruise season in Antarctica runs from November until the end of March. Outside of this period there are no cruises to Antarctica due to the harsh weather and ice conditions.

Each month offers something different in Antarctica.

November is spring in Antarctica and penguin chicks begin to hatch. As the month goes on the days get longer.

December has the longest hours and warmest temperatures for visiting the 7th continent. Wildlife is very active during this month making it one of the best months to visit.

January is our favourite month in Antarctica. We have near 24 hours a day of sunlight. There are plenty of penguin chicks and it’s a great month for seeing seals and whales. The sea ice also further breaks up making more places access.

Secret Atlas run a 12-day expedition cruise to explore Antarctica during January.

February also offers great opportunities for wildlife watching. The sea ice is usually at its lowest.

March As autumn gets underway in Antarctica the nights get darker and the temperatures get colder. It s a good month to spot whales and seals although many of the penguin chicks will be gone.

Our Antartica cruises depart from Ushuaia in Argentina.

Ushuaia has good international connections to Buenos Aires for international connections to the rest of the world. LATAM airlines serve Ushuaia on a frequent basis.

Our Antarctica cruises take just 48 guests, the smallest group size available. In Antarctica some landing sites are restricted to ships with greater gust numbers. A small ship gives us greater flexibility and allow us to explore areas larger ships cannot visit.

Unlike larger vessels with higher passenger capacities, our voyages are personal and unique in their approach. Travelling with a small group of guests means more time and flexibility exploring and less time waiting to go ashore.

Our small expedition vessels will get you closer to nature and landscapes that you came than larger ships can due to their smaller size, offering you a great deal more intimacy.

Our Small Ship Adventures give you the opportunity to experience Antarctica first hand on a real adventure without the crowds of people on larger ships. Our goal is to make you part of the adventure.

A number of companies offer expedition cruises to Antarctica.

The average number of passengers on these large ships is over 250. In our opinion that is too many people to be landing at sensitive places in Antarctica. Quite often guests are split into groups as not all guests can visit the shore at the same time due to restrictions in size at the landing sites.

Our small ship allows all guests to be ashore at the same time and have unrestricted access to all the landing sites in Antarctica.

Many companies advertise small ship cruises to Antarctic but their definition of a ‘small ship’ varies and can range from anything from 500 guests down to 50 guests. The experience between travelling with 250 guests and 48 guests is huge. Our Small Ship Cruises to Antarctica are the way they should be, intimate, low impact, and offer our guests the richest experience.

During Your Antarctica Cruise

One of the main reasons to take a cruise to Antarctica is to spend time marvelling at the awe inspiring wildlife.

The great thing about Antartica is that it is very easy to encounter wildlife close up and we visit many key wildlife sites on our expeditions.

Antartica is home to a variety of birdlife including penguins. We will aim to explore many penguin rookeries where you will see these amazing creatures close up.

On our expeditions we frequently encounter Gentoo, Adelie, Chinstrap and King Penguins. In the water and on the ice we frequently sight leopard, Crab-eater, and Weddell seals. Swimming near the ship we often encounter whales and Orcas.

A part of the adventure of an expedition cruise is to spend time exploring the wilderness which means every trip is different. Our route is decided on the day of boarding and is chosen by the expedition leader and the captain in line with the prevailing weather and ice conditions. Their aim is to ensure that you see the very best that Antarctica has to offer.

On a typical cruise, you can expect daily shore landings (usually 2 per day depending n the conditions) along with Zodiac cruising. We will visit penguin rookeries, remote beaches and visit sites of historical and natural interest such as glaciers and undertake short wilderness hikes.

The temperature in on the Antarctic peninsula during the summer months is warmer than most people imagine, and not unlike a northern European winter.

During the summer time the temperatures are usually above freezing in January with temperatures of around 1 or 2 degrees Celsius. When the sun is out and there is no wind it can feel much warmer.

The weather in Antarctica is changeable and temperatures can feel much colder when it is windy.

We will supply you with a comprehensive packing list at the time of booking that outlines the types of clothing you will need to keep you comfortable on your Antarctica cruise.

Our cruises are suitable for the vast majority of people and we aim to make them as accessible as possible. We ask that our guests have a good level of mobility as it is a requirement that you can safely step down from the vessel into the landing craft and then exit the landing craft on the beach. Due to the remote areas we visit and the distance from medical assistance, we advise that you have a reasonable level of fitness and are in good health. During the shore landings, we have multiple guides which enable us to split the group if we have some keen hikers and some other guests with more limited range.

We don’t have any age restrictions on our trips and we pride ourselves on having diverse guests from all over the world with a passion for exploring. In the past we have had young professionals eager to explore, middle-aged solo travellers, looking for their next adventure, through to retirees looking to see Antarctica in a more in-depth way. Our trips are friendly and inclusive for all our guests.

Yes, you can and every year we welcome solo travellers onboard where you will find a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

We offer accommodation options for single cabins or sharing a cabin with travellers of the same gender.

Sustainability

That’s a great question and one we want to answer honestly.

The vessels we work with don’t burn heavy fuels which are particularly detrimental to the environment and run on standard marine diesel. As a part of our commitment to the environment, we climate compensate all of our emissions by planting trees with our sustainability partner in Greenland. The cost of this is covered within the fares our guests pay and we don’t charge an additional fee for this.

Secret Atlas don’t sell flights but we are aware our guests have to fly to our destinations to board our cruises. As a part of our climate commitment, we will match the offset costs for any guests who would like to offset their flights with us. This is offered at the time of booking.

During our cruises, we follow very strict guidelines as set out by AECO (Association Of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators) to ensure minimal impact on the wildlife and places we visit. This includes following strict rules about not disturbing wildlife in its natural habitat. We employ highly experienced expedition leaders to run our expeditions in accordance with the rules and safety code laid out by AECO. The principal rules are:

  • Leave no lasting signs of your visit
  • Do not pick flowers
  • Do not take anything with you
  • Do not disturb animals and birds
  • Leave cultural remains alone Cultural remains are protected by law and a zone of 100 meters around the remains is also considered a protected zone. Watch where you are walking and standing. Walk around and not in between obj
  • Take the polar bear danger seriously
  • Respect local culture and local people

Our expedition leaders are highly trained in safety and following these rules and brief guests at the beginning of each departure. They ensure the safety of the guests throughout the cruise and that the AECO rules are followed.

As a member of AECO we take great efforts to ensure our trips don’t have any negative impact on the wildlife or environment. You can find out more  here.

The Best New Small-Ship Cruises to Book in 2024

A uthentic. It was Merriam Webster's top searched word for 2023 and one that has dominated the travel vernacular in recent years. And while many would not necessarily associate the word with ocean cruising , the growth in popularity of small-ship cruises-particularly sailings with 500 guests or fewer-indicates that in the cruising world, passengers are seeking a more intimate, less crowded, and yes, arguably more authentic sailing experience.

Take expedition cruising , for example. As the number of adventure-focused ships and yachts has exploded in recent years, these cruises are no longer just about extreme voyages in polar regions. They are also about offering a deeper look into the culture, food, history, and environmental fragility of remote wonders of the world.

Although there isn't a huge number of new small ships being introduced, there are a few notable vessels that have either recently launched or are launching this year with a focus on the idea that smaller is not just better, but more sustainable, too. These new small-ship cruises bring with them some exciting and more immersive new itineraries to destinations both warm and wintry that have us ready to pack our bags and sail away.

Sea Cloud Cruises' "Sea Cloud Spirit"

  • Suggested itinerary: Reset your mind and body on an eight-night sailing through Spain's Canary Islands and on to Morocco on a special cruise featuring experts in restorative health. Pricing starts at $4,895 per person.

What's more authentic-and sustainable-than setting sail on a tall ship where the sails are hoisted up each day by hand? Although not technically new (it was launched in 2021), the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit and its two sister ships, Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II , are upping their game in a push to introduce Sea Cloud Cruises' unique product to North American travelers. The German company has traditionally catered to German and British passengers. As part of its effort to expand its reach and appeal, Sea Cloud is adding wellness programs with daily onboard yoga and guest fitness gurus, in addition to special food- and wine-focused sailings with well-known chefs making appearances. Sea Cloud Spirit , the largest of the three-ship fleet with 69 cabins, was meticulously designed to pay homage to the original Sea Cloud , which was the world's largest private sailing yacht when Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton had it built in 1931 for his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post.

The Sea Cloud Spirit combines the experience of decades of traditional seamanship with the modern-day luxuries of a private yacht. Cabins range from 172-square-foot single cabins to 300-square-foot balcony suites with soaking tubs. There's a large fitness center and spa, which has a steam room, sauna, and thermal area for two; indoor and outdoor lounges; and a main dining area, plus a more casual bistro. The action, however, is out on deck, where passengers can stargaze at night or simply gaze in awe at the impressive sails blowing in the wind.

Atlas Ocean Voyages' "World Navigator"

  • Suggested itinerary: Go searching for Arctic wildlife on a 12-night cruise from Reykjavík, which sails along the eastern coast of Greenland and to Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago, one of the world's northernmost inhabited areas and home to polar bears, reindeer, arctic foxes, and other Nordic wildlife. Pricing starts at $6,499 per person.

World Navigator , which sailed its maiden voyage in Antarctica this past November, is the third vessel to join the fleet of one of the newest players in small-ship expedition cruising, Atlas Ocean Voyages. The company's 100-cabin expedition yachts are almost identical and provide a hybrid of sorts between traditional expedition and luxury cruising. Cabins are spacious, almost all with balconies, desks, and seating areas. The bathrooms have glass-mosaic tiled showers with rain showerheads, wall jets, and even benches.

Everything on the ship-including the sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows-is designed to provide maximum views. The ships also have spacious pool decks with two hot tubs, a fitness center overlooking the sea, a spa, and water toys like kayaks and paddleboards. There's even extreme camping gear for those willing to brave an overnight under the stars in Antarctica. During North American winters, all three of Atlas's expedition yachts sail in Antarctica. With the addition of World Navigator , the company is launching more Arctic Circle cruises during the North American summers while also adding a host of new epicurean and cultural expeditions in South America, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and northern Europe this year.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's "Ilma"

  • Suggested itinerary: Spend a little extra time in port on a 10-day sailing from Barcelona to Lisbon, which has three overnight stays, in Palma de Mallorca and Malaga in Spain, and in Lisbon, Portugal, one of Europe's oldest cities. Pricing starts at $10,600 per person.

Another newcomer to luxury small-ship cruising is the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, which debuts its second ship, the Ilma , this year. With 224 suites, the ship is larger than the original Ritz-Carlton yacht, the 149-suite Evrima , which launched in October 2022. On the Ilma , all the suites will have private terraces, including a two-story suite with soaking tub; the coveted, 1,000-square-foot owner's suite has a private outdoor whirlpool. Even the smallest suites are not all that small, at 300 square feet, and come with a personal concierge and 24-hour room service. The yacht boasts what Ritz-Carlton says is the highest ratio of space per guest at sea.

And you can expect to find the same meticulous service standards that you would find at Ritz-Carlton resorts throughout the world as the line aims to impress hotel guests seeking a luxury hotel experience at sea. Onboard are five dining venues, including S.E.A., a European tasting experience designed by chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, the three Michelin-starred restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg, Germany; Talaat Nam, featuring Southeast Asian cuisine and a sushi bar; and Mistral, a casual come-as-you-are alfresco grill with a Mediterranean-inspired menu. Light bites are served at the marina at the aft of the ship, where you can also hop on a borrowed paddleboard. Oh, and did we mention there are two outdoor pools, too?

Book a terrace suite on the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's newest vessel, Ilma , launching in 2024.

Why a Windstar Cruise Is the Best Way to Island Hop in Greece This Summer

Image may contain Boat Transportation Vehicle Yacht Cruise Ship and Ship

A summer sojourn island hopping through Greece is an experience that many travelers dream of. It’s easy to see the draw. Picture touring ancient ruins, swimming in the glittering Aegean Sea, and taking in the sweeping vistas of whitewashed buildings rising from rugged cliffs.

Yachting through Greece can be one of the most charming vacations. However, picking the right cruise line for this voyage of a lifetime is crucial to ensuring your trip is memorable for the right reasons. The best way to travel from island to island in Greece is with the small-ship cruise line Windstar, which provides exclusive experiences, ferries guests to uncrowded ports, and offers yacht-like amenities aboard its vessels.

Here’s everything you need to know about booking the ultimate Greek journey with Windstar.

Visit hidden-gem ports

Windstar’s itineraries focus on premier ports — more intimate enclaves that can only accommodate smaller ships like those in Windstar’s fleet, and as a result are often overlooked by tourists. On your Greek adventure, expect to traverse the narrow stretches of the Corinth Canal . Windstar’s ships afford passengers the rare chance to experience this feat of engineering, as the canal is only open to smaller vessels and private yachts. Once across, you’ll proceed to ports like Delphi, home to temple ruins that once housed the most famed oracle of ancient times.

In addition to iconic ports like Santorini and Mykonos, Windstar passengers will visit Greece’s smaller islands, like Patmos. Regarded by many as a sacred site, much of the island of Patmos is enshrined as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its significant biblical history. Travelers can visit the Grotto of St. John, where he is said to have recorded what became the Book of Revelations. Beyond its spiritual aspects, Patmos is a charming tangle of narrow stone alleyways that connect a hodge-podge of traditional tavernas, artisanal shops, and historic whitewashed structures. As it’s off the typical tourist path, Patmos is rarely crowded. Expect an immersive experience with only locals, fellow Windstar guests, and a few other savvy jet-setters.

Another highlight is visiting Monemvasia, a tiny island off the mainland known for its medieval walled village, accessible to pedestrians only. In fact, it’s one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Europe. Here, Windstar’s experts will guide travelers through winding lanes lined with Byzantine churches and cathedrals that date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Windstar passengers can tour the ancient castle at the hilly town’s zenith, lounge on one of the sandy beaches, or visit an olive grove, where extra-virgin olive oil is produced using traditional methods. Few tourist vessels access this serene village, and Windstar’s ships are often the only ones in port. In fact, most other travelers here will be residents vacationing from other Greek islands.

Exclusive experiences organized by Windstar’s experts

The exclusivity of a Windstar cruise doesn’t end when the ship is in port. The line curates special excursions and experiences on land that other companies don’t offer.

Windstar offers Cruise Tours in Greece combining the best of the land and the sea to check off those bucket list experiences. On Greek itineraries, this includes a tour of breathtaking Meteora, a complex of 13th-century monasteries located on the mainland atop a precipitous natural pillar of sandstone more than 1,000 feet high. The vertiginous attraction has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding architecture and beauty.

Guests are also treated to a once-in-a-lifetime private dinner among the ruins of Ephesus, an ancient city on the Aegean coast of Turkey that was once part of the Greek and Roman empires. The five-course, complimentary dinner features white-glove service and takes place near the Celsus Library on Harbor Street. Windstar guests have this ancient marvel all to themselves for the evening. What’s more: the starlit dinner is accompanied by local musicians from the Aegean Chamber Orchestra, who serenade guests as they dine.

Small ships with a boutique atmosphere

Back on board the ship, Windstar’s crew will greet you warmly and ensure you settle back in comfortably with a cocktail, appetizer, or anything you might need for the evening.

It’s not just the crew that offers bespoke service. Windstar’s fleet has an array of options to fit any travel style, offering both sailing yachts and all-suite yachts across its Greece voyages. Whether you choose the adventure of sailing or the luxury of an all-suite yacht, Windstar’s signature touches will be on board. When the ships are on anchor in select destinations, the crew will open each vessel’s Watersports Platform . This special feature on the ships’ aft decks allows guests to experience the best pool in the world—the sea itself. Enjoy free use of equipment like kayaks or stand-up paddleboards to get out on the water yourself, or take a dip directly into the sea.

If motor-yachting is more your style, consider boarding Star Legend for your Greek odyssey. The all-suite motor yacht services just 312 guests total and is newly reimagined for an even more casually elegant atmosphere. Guests can expect all new public areas, two new dining venues, a revamped spa, and a Motion Studio with Pilates classes, to name just a few of the upgrades. Inside the spacious ocean-view suites—which are a minimum of 277 square feet—guests will find completely refurbished bathrooms with upgraded finishes and a totally new category of suites, Star Suites, featuring an original floor plan with the bed by the window to watch the stars at night.

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Yacht Boat Cruise Ship and Ship

Each of the ships are designed to feel like private yachts—Windstar’s sailing ships have guest capacities of just 148 and 342 passengers for an ultra-exclusive and boutique atmosphere. Each elegant stateroom offers an ocean view and queen size bed, plus fresh fruit and a stocked minbar. On deck, there’s plenty to do, with a pool, hot tub, lounge, and spa, plus complimentary yoga right on the deck. But the real entertainment is watching the six sails unfurl valiantly in the breeze as the sailing yachts, Wind Star , Wind Spirit , and Wind Surf , get underway to whisk passengers to the next idyllic Greek village.

Step aboard Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, a cruise ship so big it has 8 'neighborhoods' spread across 18 decks

  • I sailed on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, the second-largest cruise ship in the world.
  • It can hold up to 7,000 guests and has eight "neighborhoods" full of activities and amenities.
  • The ship was even bigger than I imagined. Here's a tour of the 18 decks and all the venues.

Insider Today

In April 2022, I took my first cruise on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas and it was bigger than I could even imagine. I felt as if I were in a small town in the middle of the ocean. At the time of my sailing, Wonder of the Seas was the largest cruise ship in the world. Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas took over the title in January 2024.

Step aboard the second-largest cruise ship in the world.

Wonder of the Seas, sailing since March 2022, is nearly 1,200 feet long and 210 feet wide with 18 decks. It can hold about 7,000 guests.

For $2,000, I spent seven nights in an ocean-view stateroom on deck eight. The cruise was on sale, as it was originally priced at $3,000.

During my voyage, the ship sailed to Roatán, Honduras; Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico; and Royal Caribbean's own private island in the Bahamas.

The enormous ship had eight communal areas that Royal Caribbean calls "neighborhoods." Each neighborhood had its own activities.

To get up and down the ship's many decks, there are 24 elevators taking guests to 16 of the 18 levels. The top two decks are accessible only for suite guests.

In my experience, the elevators were packed during busy parts of the day, so I found it faster to take the stairs on either side of the elevators.

Decks seven, 10, and 11 hold only staterooms, but most decks have a combination of staterooms, restaurants, venues, and activities.

Decks two and three have boarding areas to enter and exit the ship. Deck three is the lowest deck with staterooms.

The main dining room spans levels three, four, and five.

small ship educational cruises

Meals in the main dining rooms were included in the price of my ticket.

Deck four is home to Entertainment Place, a neighborhood with fun venues surrounded by framed art on display.

One of the venues, Studio B, is used for shows and activities that take up a large space, like ice skating and laser tag.

Down the hall from Studio B is the casino, where guests can gamble on a floor full of game tables and slot machines.

Entertainment Place also has a sushi restaurant, Izumi.

While most shows were free, many restaurants like Izumi cost extra.

On deck five, there's a neighborhood called Royal Promenade lined with restaurants, bars, and stores.

small ship educational cruises

A venue called the Royal Theater also hosts shows on decks four and five.

One of the bars in this area is Bionic Bar, where robots make drinks.

small ship educational cruises

The Royal Promenade neighborhood also has two coffee shops — Starbucks and Cafe Promenade.

The Boardwalk is an outdoor neighborhood on deck six.

The Boardwalk deck caters to families with kids with a carousel, a candy store, and rock-climbing walls.

There are two restaurants on the Boardwalk: a hot-dog stand, which is included for guests, and a Johnny Rockets, which has burgers and shakes, for an added fee.

Across from the Boardwalk restaurants is Playmakers, a sports bar.

The Boardwalk ends with the Aquatheater, where Royal Caribbean puts on outdoor movies and a water show featuring dancers, divers, and acrobats.

At night, the boardwalk lights up for the show.

On the other side of deck six is the spa and fitness-center neighborhood, Vitality at Sea.

small ship educational cruises

Just past the Vitality at Sea entrance is a café before the spa area and gym, which was full of cardio and strength machines I've seen in most fitness centers.

From the fitness center, there's access to an indoor track.

Up on deck eight, there's another outdoor neighborhood, Central Park.

small ship educational cruises

This deck is home to 20,000 plants, according to Royal Caribbean .

There are many spaces to chill in this neighborhood, including benches and outdoor couches. I thought it was the most relaxing area on the ship.

Central Park is home to three upscale restaurants — Chops Grille, 150 Central Park, and Giovanni's Italian. There's also Park Cafe, a casual eatery that is free for guests.

small ship educational cruises

The Central Park deck has also two bars — Trelli's and Rising Tide, a moving bar that goes up and down floors five through eight.

Deck 14 is home to the Youth Zone neighborhood.

small ship educational cruises

The deck is a kids' area with an escape room.

Deck 15 is the pool deck. There are three large pools that made me feel as if I were at the beach with water coming up and around the lounging chairs.

small ship educational cruises

The deck also has a handful of whirlpools and small plunge pools for relaxing and a water playground called Splashaway Bay.

In the middle of the pool deck, Sprinkles has all-you-can-eat soft-serve ice cream with vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and mixed flavors. It's included for guests.

Deck 15 also has the Solarium, an adults-only indoor lounge with pools, a bar, a complimentary bistro, and stunning views.

small ship educational cruises

Outside the Solarium, there's a bar called Vue with more ocean views.

Windjammer, a complimentary buffet that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, is on deck 15, too.

small ship educational cruises

The buffet served a wide range of food options, including everything from waffles and bacon to fried chicken and tacos.

Up on deck 16, there are more lounging areas and a big screen for outdoor movies.

small ship educational cruises

There are also covered casitas for lounging that guests may reserve.

Deck 16 is also where guests play games.

small ship educational cruises

Up here, there's an indoor arcade as well as outdoor mini-golf, table tennis, basketball, water slides, and a stationary surf simulator.

The eighth neighborhood is the most exclusive — Suite Class Neighborhood.

small ship educational cruises

Decks 17 and 18 are accessible only for guests with suites and include private pools and terraces.

The ship felt bigger than I imagined, especially since I'd never been on a cruise before.

small ship educational cruises

As we left the port to start our journey, I marveled at how the ships passing by looked like toy boats in comparison.

Crew of the giant Icon of the Seas cruise ship rescues 14 people adrift in the sea

MIAMI (AP) — The crew of what is considered the world’s largest cruise ship rescued 14 people clinging to a small boat adrift on the ocean, authorities said.

Passengers aboard the Icon of the Seas captured video of the crew using a small vessel to ferry the group to the safety of the cruise ship on Sunday. The cruise had begun in Miami, and the ship was headed for Honduras when the rescue happened, passengers said.

The cruise ship encountered the small vessel “adrift and in need of assistance,” Miami-based Royal Caribbean said in a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday.

“The ship’s crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing 14 people on board,” the company said. “The crew provided them with medical attention, and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard.”

The crew broadcast “Code Oscar, Code Oscar, Code Oscar,” over the loudspeakers around 3 p.m., Alessandra Amodio said in a report on FoxWeather.com .

Amodio said she watched as people on the tiny craft waved a large white flag.

“The boat turned around, and we pulled up as close as we could to them and stopped,” Amodio said. The cruise ship then launched “a small zodiac-type rescue boat to investigate.”

After the rescue, Amodio said the cruise ship’s captain announced that the crew had rescued 14 people stranded at sea for eight days.

The Icon of the Seas is considered by cruise industry experts to be the largest cruise ship in the world at the moment, the Miami Herald reported . It can host 5,610 guests and 2,350 crew members. The ship has 2,850 staterooms, 18 guest decks and seven swimming pools.
