First 'Super Load' begins journey from southern Ohio to Licking County

by Kate Siefert, WSYX Staff

The first super load left Adams County on Wednesday morning and began its several-day journey to Central Ohio for the Intel site. (ODOT)

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Ohio drivers may see some interesting sights on the roads in the coming weeks and months.

The first of many massive transports began Wednesday morning in Adams County, along the Ohio River, with plans to deliver industrial gear to Licking County's Intel site as well as a recycling center in Hebron.

ALSO | What you need to know before massive equipment for Intel travels through Central Ohio

The Ohio Department of Transportation is planning dozens of such deliveries of "Super Loads," each of which could take more than a week to cover the approximately 115-mile route.

Some loads will weigh as much as 900,000 pounds and measure 19 feet wide, 24 feet high, and 270 feet long.

The first load that left Adams County on Wednesday weighs in a 390,000 pounds, is 200 feet long and 18 feet tall.

MORE | Dozens of shipments of Intel equipment stalled in southern Ohio before delivery

"Each oversized and overweight load will take approximately 8-15 days to reach its destination," a recent ODOT statement said. "While no official closures or detours are planned, slow-rolling roadblocks will be necessary during transit, and drivers should plan ahead for long delays along the route."

Each load will be escorted by Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers. Getting to Central Ohio will take the cooperation of multiple local governments and utility companies . People who travel along the route may experience traffic delays as the truck moves slowly through the area.

By Friday, the first load is expected to arrive in Franklin County near Groveport. Groveport Police Chief Casey Adams said when that super load starts its route Saturday morning, drivers should anticipate road closures.

"All southbound traffic along State Route 317 will be temporarily diverted between Groveport Rd. and Bixby Rd," Adams said.

Adams said while they are preparing to ensure the oversized trucks complete their journey through their jurisdiction safely, the safety of the rest of the community is also their top priority.

"We’ve been talking with Madison Township Police department to help," Adams said. "Residents should know, it might not be a Groveport police car that gets to that Groveport business or residence first. We will get there, but will make sure another agency will handle that call until we can get there."

Some Groveport residents have raised concerns about the impact the heavy loads could have on their roads.

A spokesperson for the Franklin County Engineer's Office said the roads along the routes within the county are in good condition and should not be adversely impacted by the move. All loads and routes were reviewed to ensure the route was safe.

"The hauler is insured and would be responsible for any damage to our road infrastructure," Carla Marable, the Director of Communications for the Franklin County Engineer's Office, said. "The route for this move was coordinated by ODOT and the hauler, Capital City Group, and permitted by municipalities along the route."

After the 'Super Load' leaves the Groveport area, it's expected to travel through the Violet Township and Pickerington areas on Sunday and Monday.

ODOT listed the route as:

  • From the dock site east of Manchester, it will travel east on U.S. 52 to West Portsmouth.

What is a ‘super load?’ Huge shipments heading across Ohio to construction sites, including Intel

Super Load route 03062024

  • Sean McDonnell, cleveland.com

MANCHESTER, Ohio — If you’re looking for signs of Ohio’s economic development, keep an eye out for a 900,000-pound “super load” on the highway.

That’s how large some shipments traveling through Ohio will be, mainly because of Intel’s plans to build a semiconductor plant in New Albany near Columbus. ODOT says nearly two dozen of these loads will travel from the Ohio River to Central Ohio — and the first one started its journey Wednesday morning.

Wednesday’s shipment is a combustion chamber, making its way from Manchester in southern Ohio to a recycling plant in Hebron in central Ohio. Most of super loads though are associated with Intel.

ODOT said these loads come on a barge and then get loaded onto semi trucks so they can take a predetermined route to New Albany or Hebron. Each trip will take eight to 15 days.

Some of the loads will be as large as 900,000 pounds, 19 feet wide, 24 feet high and 270 feet long. Slow-rolling roadblocks will go along with them on a planned route. Each load will also be escorted by Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers.

For comparison, the maximum load on Ohio highways normally is 80,000 pounds .

No detours or closures are planned, but drivers should plan ahead for long delays if they take the same route, ODOT said.

ODOT said the Wednesday morning load moving east on U.S. 52 is expected to travel the wrong way on U.S. Route 52 in the westbound lanes just before the junction of Ohio Route 239 and U.S. Route 52.

The load will travel north on the Ohio Route 239 southbound ramp toward routes 73 and 852 before stopping overnight in the West Portsmouth area. This shipment will eventually end up in Hebron.

“For months, we have been working in coordination with the Ohio State Highway Patrol and local stakeholders along the route to ensure each move goes as smoothly as possible with minimal impacts to those who live and work in the communities along the route,” said ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks. “We will work to provide as much notice as possible so that drivers can plan ahead and use alternate routes.”

From watch parties to music festivals, choose your April 8 total solar eclipse adventure

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America. It will be the last one visible from the contiguous United States until 2044. Here’s what viewers should expect to see during each stage of the eclipse. (Feb. 16) (AP video: Christine Nguyen)

NEW YORK (AP) — Where will you be watching the April 8 total solar eclipse ? There are just a few weeks left to pick your spot to see the skies darken along a strip of North America, whether by land, sea or air.

For those who live inside the 115-mile-wide (185-kilometer-wide) path of total darkness , it may be a matter of just stepping outside and donning special eclipse glasses to watch the spectacle unfold. For the millions outside the path, or those who just want to improve their chances of clear skies, it could mean hitting the road with a game plan.

The eclipse reaches Mexico’s Pacific coast in the morning, cuts diagonally across the U.S. from Texas to Maine and exits in eastern Canada by late afternoon. Most of the rest of the continent will see a partial eclipse.

Where to watch the total solar eclipse

The weather will be key, and spring weather along the path can be dicey. Mexico and Texas offer the best odds of sunny skies, said retired Canadian meteorologist Jay Anderson .

“There’s no guarantee of sunshine anywhere — just better chances,” he said.

Anderson studies satellite data for the previous 20 years to calculate how often a location has cloudy weather on any eclipse day. Besides Mexico and Texas, he said there are other promising spots on the path of totality, particularly along the Great Lakes.

The advice: If you’re flexible, start paying attention to local weather about 10 days out, and make your plans on the three-day forecast. Die-hard eclipse chasers often line up more than one location and make last-minute decisions based on the best forecast, he said.

How to prepare like an eclipse chaser

One veteran eclipse chaser recommends picking a location and make it a vacation so that the eclipse is “the cherry on top” and not the only highlight — just in case things don’t work out.

Tom Schultz will be traveling from his retirement home in Costa Rica to watch the eclipse from his mother-in-law’s house in Rochester, New York, along with other relatives.

“If we get rained out, we’ll get this great family reunion,” said Schultz.

Veteran Anne Marie Adkins could drive across town in San Antonio to see the total eclipse, but opted to join an astronomer-led tour to Mazatlán, Mexico, betting on clear skies there. She’s been thwarted by clouds on other trips. For the 2017 U.S. eclipse, she went to Nebraska and had to scramble that day to find better skies.

“It’s a gamble. You never know what you are going to get,” said Adkins.

Post-eclipse traffic is a particular worry, especially in more rural areas like the Texas Hill Country. Patricia Moore, of the Bandera visitors center , said last year’s “ring of fire” eclipse provided a dress rehearsal for police and other first responders. Tiny Bandera — the “Cowboy Capital of the World” — expects crowds from nearby weekend music festivals.

“After the eclipse will be a challenge,” she said.

Where are the eclipse watch parties?

With the eclipse falling on a Monday, cities and towns along the path have lined up a weekend full of activities and watch parties to attract visitors. There are a multitude of music festivals and gatherings planned at museums, parks, wineries and other businesses hoping to capitalize on the buzz.

Niagara Falls has a slate of events for days and is expecting July Fourth-sized crowds for the eclipse, said Sara Harvey, spokeswoman for Destination Niagara USA.

There are multiple vantage points to watch the show from Niagara Falls State Park, and the famous Maid of the Mist tourist boats may be running, weather permitting, she said. Even if it’s cloudy, visitors will get “a beautiful view of the falls,” Harvey said.

In Waco, Texas, festivities will culminate on eclipse day with science-themed activities outside Baylor’s McLane stadium , along what’s called Touchdown Alley.

It may be too late to snag a cabin on a cruise ship positioned off the Mexico coast for the eclipse, but there are other watery options including a ride on the paddle-wheeler Victorian Princess on Lake Erie from Erie, Pennsylvania.

If the sky beckons, Southwest and Delta have identified flights that will fly along or near the eclipse path. A special Delta flight from Austin to Detroit quickly sold out, prompting the airline to add another from Dallas.

Looking for an different kind of place to watch the sun, moon and Earth align? The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will host NASA astronauts and other guests. Cedar Point amusement park on Lake Erie in Sandusky, Ohio, is opening for the day. And the Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas is throwing a tailgate fundraising party and inviting visitors to watch the zoo’s residents react to the midday darkness.

You can also spend the day visiting the planets. In northern Maine, a scale model of the solar system is displayed along nearly 100 miles (160 kilometers) of U.S. Route 1. Retired geology professor Kevin McCartney expects to unveil a new 23- foot-tall (7-meters-tall) roadside sun at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on eclipse day. “You won’t be able to miss it,” he said.

Anderson, the weather expert, said it’s well worth the travel to see the “special magical moment” of a total eclipse: “It’s the Taylor Swift of natural events.”

Maps of totality for the 2024 eclipse

After six years, seven months, and 18 days, a total eclipse of the Sun will once again cross North America.

The total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024, will dazzle tens of millions of people from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the shores of Newfoundland, Canada, just north of St. John's. The U.S. states touched by totality are Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Inside the path of totality, the sky will suddenly darken to a deep twilight and the Sun's magnificent corona will appear around the pitch-black disk of the eclipsing Moon. Totality is easily one of the most beautiful natural sights, and people will come from all over the globe to see the corona's majesty.

Nearly all of North America except for Alaska will have the opportunity to view and enjoy at least a partial solar eclipse. (Don't feel sorry for Alaska, though - it will be the only place in the U.S. to see the total solar eclipse of March 30, 2033.)

The impact of totality

The 2024 total solar eclipse will have an even greater impact than the 2017 eclipse across America. The reasons are population, proximity, duration, and public memory.

  • Within the U.S., more than 31 million people live inside the path of totality, as compared to 12 million people inside the path in 2017. Millions more reside within the path in Mexico and Canada, especially the more populated cities of Mazatlán, Torreón, Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa.
  • The path of totality comes within 200 miles (322 kilometers) of major cities of the U.S. Eastern Seaboard: Washington, D.C.; Baltimore; Philadelphia; New York; and Boston. Additionally, over half the nation's population lives within 250 miles (400 km) of the path of totality.
  • The duration of the 2024 eclipse is nearly twice that of the 2017 eclipse. This will attract additional visitors.
  • The U.S. national memory of a total solar eclipse is relatively fresh from 2017. Before the 2017 eclipse, the last total solar eclipse on the U.S. mainland was in 1979, a gap of 38 years. Those who remember missing out on the great spectacle just six years ago will most likely make plans to attend this month's eclipse.

Witnessing a total solar eclipse is truly a peak life experience and well worth the travel to any location along the path of totality.

Maps of totality

Reading the maps of totality.

The following eclipse maps will guide you to the best location to observe this April's total solar eclipse. The maps address three questions frequently asked by eclipse travelers: Where are the best places to see the total solar eclipse? How long will totality be at my location? And what time will totality begin?

In general, you want to be as close to the center of the path of totality as possible to see the longest duration of totality.

On the maps of totality, the dark gray diagonal belt is the path of totality where the Moon's shadow will travel from west to east. The ovals along the path show the Moon's shadow at five-minute intervals. The shape of the shadow incorporates the precise shape of the Moon's limb at the time of totality. Cities inside the path of totality are marked by white color-coded font. The highway system is light red; the thickest lines are interstate highways.

The yellow lines perpendicular to the path of totality, with times also indicated in black, show the local time of maximum eclipse. Outside the path of totality, this is the time of maximum partial eclipse. Inside the path of totality, the time colored in white indicates the midpoint of totality (maximum eclipse).

You can estimate how long totality will last at your location by reading the curves of totality duration within the path, from the central yellow oval to the outer dark purple lines. For example, Hamilton, Ontario, gets just under 2 minutes of totality and Erie, Pennsylvania, receives 3 minutes 44 seconds.

Along the sides of the maps, the crescent Sun figures with percent values indicate the Sun's appearance at maximum eclipse. The values given are eclipse obscurations, the fraction of the Sun's disk occulted by the Moon.

Stack your odds on eclipse day

Eclipse chasers are obsessive about weather because it is the primary factor for success on eclipse day. Here are tips to use alongside these maps to ensure you view the best total solar eclipse.

  • Choose a base location with favorable weather prospects and a good highway system for relocation if needed. You can also consult "Your eclipse weather forecast" on this web site or https://eclipsophile.com , both created by meteorologist Jay Anderson, for a thorough review of the climatology along the path of totality in April.
  • Starting about a week before the eclipse, weather models will give a general indication of conditions at your location on eclipse day. Each day, keep an eye on how the models evolve and make your contingency plan for eclipse day. From your base, pick one spot inside the path of totality to the southwest and another to the northeast, and see which site's weather is more promising. You can access the latest weather models and satellite imagery here .
  • Study satellite weather imagery beginning the evening before the eclipse. If you need to relocate to a back-up location, either leave that night or in the pre-dawn hours of eclipse day.
  • Keep a full gas tank or electric charge and have plenty of essential supplies on hand. Meals in restaurants may or may not be available (or quick), so carry food and drinks. Don't forget your eclipse viewers as well as other fun items to cast partial eclipse shadows, such as a kitchen colander.
  • After the eclipse, be prepared for traffic jams and long drive times. Phone maps with a traffic layer may help guide you around the worst traffic.

I've never met a single person who has traveled near or far to observe a total solar eclipse and regretted the effort to do so. Totality is an outstanding spectacle that makes this level of preparation and action more than worthwhile. Use these maps and the tips you'll find throughout this issue to plan your perfect eclipse!

The 7 Best Places to See the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

ohio travel map

Are you gearing up to see the total solar eclipse in April? We’ve collected some of the best spots to see totality, and the tools to find your perfect location.

Map illustration of eclipse path going through Mexico, US and Canada, april 8, 2024

The total solar eclipse on April 8 runs through Mexico, the USA—from Texas to Maine—and Canada. The darkest red band is the path of totality, and the lighter shaded areas get a partial eclipse. Find your location in our eclipse map!

On April 8, 2024 , the Moon will cross the face of the Sun, and a total solar eclipse will sweep across North America.

The total phase of the eclipse, where the Moon completely covers the Sun , is visible from a narrow path of totality starting in Mexico and then going through the 15 US states of Texas , Oklahoma , Arkansas , Missouri , Kentucky , Tennessee (small part), Illinois , Indiana , Ohio , Michigan (small part), Pennsylvania , New York , Vermont , New Hampshire , and Maine .

In Canada , totality can be seen in Ontario , Quebec , New Brunswick , Prince Edward Island , Nova Scotia , and Newfoundland and Labrador .

Worldwide, from start to finish , the whole eclipse will last around five hours , with up to four minutes and 30 seconds of totality in some locations.

1. Be the First in Mazatlán, Mexico

Unless you’re in a boat (or a plane) in the Pacific Ocean, Mazatlán in Mexico is the place to be if you want to be the first to see the eclipse .

Eclipse facts:

The Sociedad Astronómica Mazatleca , the astronomy association in Mazatlán, has its hands full, welcoming both the Mexican and international astronomical community to their hometown, as well as people descending on the city to see the eclipse .

“People are coming from NASA, the European Space Agency, South America, Japan, Finland, and more. And we don’t know how many people will turn up to see the eclipse. Will it be 10,000 or 20,000?” David Esquivel, the president of the association, told us on a call a few weeks back.

We wish our friends good luck and clear skies.

What to look for during a total eclipse : First contact —the moment the Moon takes a bite out of the Sun and the eclipse has begun.

2. Texas Is the Heart of the Eclipse

Although around 43,000,000 people live in the path of totality, many will flock to Texas for this eclipse. There are several reasons why the Lone Star State is popular with the eclipse crowds.

The center line cuts right through the middle of the state, giving many options for smaller and larger locations to view totality. Austin is located toward the edge of the eclipse path with 1 minute and 46 seconds of totality. The Dallas to Fort Worth area , home to more than 7.5 million people, is very close to the center line with up to 4 minutes of totality.

Texas has the longest totality durations in the US because the state is close to the global maximum of the eclipse (it happens in Mexico). Near the beginning and end of the path of totality, the Moon’s shadow skims more quickly over Earth’s surface. Head to Kerrville for 4 minutes and 25 seconds of totality.

What to look for during a total eclipse : the Sun’s corona —the ghostly halo that surrounds the Sun can only be seen during a total solar eclipse.

The path of totality goes straight through the heart of Texas, providing many potential locations to see totality. Try our eclipse map and use the layers on the side to find the path of totality, the central line, and the cloud cover to find your perfect location.

3. Speeding Through Indianapolis

Crowds are expected at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the eclipse speeds its way through the North American continent. And the Moon’s umbral shadow really is speeding along now as it’s moving away from the global maximum (the eclipse shadow moves faster at the beginning and end of an eclipse).

For any solar eclipse, it’s crucial to be serious about eye safety : NEVER look at the Sun without proper eye protection .

There is one exception to the rule to be exercised with caution :

During the brief moments of totality , when the Sun is completely covered, and the ghostly solar corona becomes visible around the Moon, eclipse glasses can be safely removed —in fact, if you don’t take off your eye protection, you won’t be able to see the solar corona.

How to use eclipse glasses

What to look for during a total eclipse : the Diamond Ring —the corona forms a ring around the dark Moon, while the Sun dazzles like a jewel .

4. Along Lake Erie in Ohio

From Cleveland, Ohio, and along the southern shore of Lake Erie , there are plenty of prime locations to catch the last total solar eclipse in the US until 2033.

The Cleveland side of the shore of Lake Erie offers multiple locations close to the center line, away from the big city crowds.

We’re getting into cloud country , and as we move northeast in the eclipse path, we need to get a bit luckier with the weather as, historically, it has been cloudy over 60% of the days since 2000 in this part of the US.

That said, you only need a break in the clouds to see the eclipse over the majestic lake.

Our weather services are an excellent aid to help you plan your travels from 14 days out , right up to hour-by-hour on eclipse day.

What to look for during a total eclipse : Baily’s Beads —as the Sun streams through the valleys along the edge of the Moon, beads of sunlight appear just before and after totality.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the US?

5. Set the Scene in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada , is definitely one of the more spectacular places to see this eclipse.

Nicknamed the Great North American Eclipse for good reason, the eclipse now crosses into Canada with the Moon’s umbra—its darkest shadow—hitting scenic Niagara Falls.

There’s nothing like a bit of nature to upstage nature, right? Niagara Falls definitely sets the scene for a spine-tingling, magical place to experience totality .

One way to describe the “magic” that happens during totality is that it is both completely strange and vaguely familiar at the same time.

As the Moon starts covering most of the Sun, it feels a bit like twilight , and nature reacts accordingly. Birds fly around looking for a tree to sleep in, and dogs start barking . As for our human nature, the awe of night in the middle of the day plays into the magic—when the Moon covers the Sun completely, it’s about as dark as during a Full Moon night.

What to look for during a total eclipse : feel the temperature start to drop from about 30 minutes before totality until the New Moon completely covers the Sun.

6. Last Chance to See in Newfoundland

The people in the village of Little Catalina on Newfoundland Island get to be some of the last to say goodbye to the Great North American Eclipse .

A total solar eclipse lasts from sunrise to sunset on the daytime side of Earth. After the Moon’s umbral shadow leaves Canada’s easternmost coast, the Sun will set in the Atlantic Ocean.

The next chance to see a total solar eclipse on Earth will be in August 2026, when the path of totality goes through Greenland, Iceland, and Spain .

What to look for during a total eclipse : Fourth contact —the moment the Moon’s disc leaves the Sun and the eclipse is over for this time .

7. Stay Right Where You Are

If you are not in the path of totality, you can still see a partial solar eclipse that covers almost all of North America, and a sliver of South America and Europe .

In fact, around 650 million people can see a partial eclipse —just ensure you are protecting your eyes .

And if all else fails, we will be in the thick of it, streaming it live to you .
